Product Description:

Caldecott Honor winner David Shannon applies his wonderful off-beat humor to the story of a duck who decides to try riding a bike--and loves it! Another young, funny book perfect for reading aloud.

One day down on the farm, Duck got a wild idea. "I bet I could ride a bike," he thought. He waddled over to where the boy parked his bike, climbed on and began to ride. At first he rode slowly and he wobbled a lot, but it was fun! Duck rode past Cow and waved to her. "Hello, Cow!" said Duck. "Moo," said Cow. But what she thought was, "A duck on a bike? That's the silliest thing I've ever seen!"
And so Duck rides past sheep, horse, and all the other barnyard animals. Suddenly, a group of kids ride by on their bikes and run into the farmhouse, leaving the bikes outside. Now ALL the animals can ride bikes, just like Duck!

When Duck gets the zany idea to ride a bike one day, each animal on the farm has a reaction. "M-o-o-o," says Cow. But what she's really thinking is, "A duck on a bike? That's the silliest thing I've ever seen!" Pig and Pig say "Oink," thinking all the while, "Duck is such a show-off!" But it's not until a crew of kids shows up and leaves their bikes lying about that the true feelings of all the animals come to light, and for one brief, glorious moment, the farm is a mad, mad world of two-wheeling road hogs (and chickens and horses and goats). David Shannon, the creator of Caldecott Honor Book, No, David!, fills the pages of this barnyard romp with sun-soaked color, charming animals, and unusual perspectives. We see Cat, for example, looming belly-first in the foreground, with Duck merrily pedaling away in the distance. The story itself is nothing to write home about--No, David! is far snappier and more original--but younger kids may well enjoy the repetitive crescendo and the goofy finale. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect for storytime at home, school or the library, October 10, 2002
By A Customer
As a children's librarian, I am always searching for the next perfect book to read for preschool storytime. I have read this book to several groups now and always have had an enraptured audience--both children and adults love it. Duck decides to ride a bike for the fun of it and greets the animal on the farm as he passes by. It might sound trite, but in this book, it is all magical.

The full bleed illustrations are bright and colorful while the story is humorous and engaging. Don't miss the last page either. All the kids love it. This has become my favorite picture book this year and I will be disappointed if it doesn't receive a Caldecott nod. Add this one to your child's library or give it to a favorite child as a gift. Then sit down and read it together. Neither of you will be disappointed! A great companion book also out this year is "Do Like a Duck Does" by Judy Hindley.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Duck duck bike, April 10, 2004
By Ramseelbird (Manhattan, NY)
Not since Doreen Cronin created her own enterprising foul in "Click Clack Moo" has a duck so single handedly taken farm matters directly into his own hands. In this particularly charming tale, a curious duck eyes a shiny red bicycle on the farm. Judging himself a worthy rider, Duck hops onto the bike and visits all the other animals on the farm. Each animal responds with their own particular sound (moos, meows, woofs, etc.) but think what they will about Duck's exploits. When a large bike riding group of youngsters arrive on the farm and head inside the house, their own bicycles become too much of a lure for the barnyard fellows and soon the yard is full of wheeling critters.

Using a selection of beautiful paints, novel characters, and interesting angles, author/illustrator David Shannon (of "No, David" fame) has created a truly delightful tale. His attention to detail is remarkable. Kids that remember that when Duck passed the goat his thought was, "I'd like to eat that bike!" will be rewarded if they notice that once on such a contraption, the goat makes a point of chewing on the available basket. And honestly, who else could draw a horse sneering any better than Shannon? The curl of the lip is an expression I've often expected on certain finicky animals. Safety conscious parents will note that the pack of kids arriving on the farm, aside from being nicely multicultural and of different genders, are almost all wearing safety helmets. So well done there. And as a personal note, I always give extra points to those illustrators that understand the beauty of the silent gag. The two page spread of the animals eying the new bicycles eagerly will make parents laugh in appreciation and make gleeful those kids that can figure out what is about to occur. And much like the more recent "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus", we can appreciate the troubles that might come from Duck's curious perusal of an unmanned tractor on the last page. All in all, a fun story that would read aloud very very well to large groups of children. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A Ducky Good Time....., April 24, 2002
By Roz Levine
"One day down on the farm, Duck got a wild idea. "I bet I could ride a bike!" he thought. He waddled over to where the boy parked his bike, climbed on, and began to ride..." So begins David Shannon's creative and silly picture book, Duck On A Bike. In no time Duck's mastered the art of pedaling, and is zooming around the barnyard waving and calling to his friends. The cow thinks it's silly, and the sheep is sure Duck will hurt himself. The dog thinks it's neat, and the pigs think Duck is a big show-off. Mr Goat isn't so interested in riding, but would like to eat the bike, the horse just wants to remind Duck that he's still faster, and the cat is so self-involved, he doesn't even look up as Duck rides by. And that's when it happens...a whole gang of kids come riding onto the farm, park their bikes, and go inside. And in just a matter of seconds, Duck discovers he isn't the only animal riding around and around the barnyard..... Mr Shannon's engaging text begs to be read aloud, and is full of animal sounds and clever asides. But it's his bold, bright, and busy illustrations that really make this book sparkle. Each two page spread is filled with endearing oversized animals, marvelous facial expressions, and hilarious details. Perfect for kids 3-7, Duck On A Bike is a joyous, manic romp that little animal lovers and bike enthusiasts shouldn't miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great book, January 16, 2005
By TA Mom
My criteria for 5 *s is:
- warm illustrations
- humourous
- well written text
- my kids like it
- fun for an adult to read over and over again
- has a satisfying ending

This book has it all. It took a little while to grow on me but I kept finding more and more depth in the pictures and the text. The animals responses to seeing the duck ride the bike are both appropriate to each animal and humourous. e.g. the horse brags that he is faster, the dog thinks it's really cool, the cat is somewhat indifferent and the goat wants to eat the bike.

It is also very fun to read to children. You can be a bit silly without trying hard. Unlike some other childrens' books, I don't mind reading this frequently and it is a frequent request from my 3.5 year olds.

The ending with the duck staring at the tractor is a fun twist.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I wish I could ride a bike just like duck!, March 5, 2006
By metimoteo (the centennial state)
For me, any book that can be acted, as much as read aloud, is a book that I want to share with my listeners and one that I would definitely recommend to you. This book is both those things. The ingenious text invites you to mimic the farm animals and be the most spirited reader you can be. In the hands of a dedicated reader and/or a devoted parent, this title will prove an exceedingly satisfying read. The illustrations are gorgeous and can be most appreciated in the arms of a child while he/she studies them up close. The clever ending will hopefully tempt your son or daughter to say, "Uh-oh, what's he up to now?" and foster a discussion with him/her about what might happen to Duck next. This is one of the best examples of contemporary literature for young children because it so artfully combines smart writing with outstanding illustrations. Again, like so many of the books I've presented to my audiences at the Children's Museum, this is a book that should be included in your young child's library because it will undoubtedly be read over and over and enjoyed till it's worn.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Read Aloud Fun, April 9, 2003
By J. Lee (Michigan)
Many children's books put me to sleep while I am reading the bedtime story. This, however, is one of my favorite books to read aloud. I have a great opportunity to practice dramatic voices; I can be a superior acting horse, an arrogant cat, and a worshipful mouse. The illustrations are sensational. I wish I could find more books that are this much fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Just Ducky Good Read, May 24, 2002
By Rebecca Crabtree (Martinsville, Virginia United States)
My six-year-old daughter laughed out loud at the antics in the barnyard. How silly... a duck on a bike! Each year my daughter buys books and donates them to the school library in honor of her teachers in lieu of an end of the year gift (how many apple paper weights can one teacher have?!?). This book was purchased for that reason but she enjoyed it so much she wanted to keep it for her personal library (this book is so good it needs to be shared is what convinced her to donate it). Enjoy!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  A Story with Perspective, April 4, 2004
By Andrea Mauk (Los Angeles, California United States)
Duck on a Bike is a whimsical tale about a duck who seizes the opportunity to do something out of the ordinary. After spying a parked red cruiser, he decides to take a ride. As he passes the rest of his barnyard friends, they all express their opinions in their native tongues (moo, meow, squeak, m-a-a-a, etc...) Just like people, they all think something different. Some are scared, one is boastful, some appear jealous, and one could care less. Yet, when a gaggle of kids flies by and parks their bikes in front of a house, all of the animals are struck with the idea that what duck is doing isn't so bad after all.

It is great to see the barnyard animals grasping at handlebars with hoofs and wings. The pigs ride a tandem bike, rooster a tricycle, and goat gets her wish as she munches innocently on the bike's basket. After all, kids will be kids.

Shannon uses interesting perspective and great staging to bring the illustrations in this book to life. The bicycles are rendered beautifully, and the style of illustration is very different than the one he uses in the David books. It is worth it to buy this book for the artwork alone.

Don't pass the last page of this book without paying attention, or else you'll miss the next big adventure duck is planning!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  The Bike Gang, March 10, 2003
By Tyson (MI)
On this summer day, Duck sees a bike. He gets a funny idea that he can ride it. After a little bit of practice, Duck is able to ride the bike all over the farm. He shows off to all his friends, Sheep, Goat, and Horse. They all say hes weird for riding the bike. Later that day, about 10 kids drove by with their bikes and parked them. And can you guess what happend?
I thought this story was a pretty good one. It told people not to be afriad to be different.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Delightful!, November 18, 2005
By Reds (Abingdon, Maryland)
This is such a fun book for children and their Parents! The farm animals are so cute and the expression on their face is humorous! Parent's can have fun giving each character a different voice. This is an excellent book for young children! My son enjoys many of David Shannon's stories, including the David books. The David books are probably more for children past the toddler stage. My son read one of the David books in front of class and the students loved it! The David pictures are pretty funny too.
Duck on a Bike is fun reading for the family!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  THIS IS THE BEST BOOK EVER!!!!, November 19, 2003
By me="R32OQ6I7LMATMK"> 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful:
Duck on a Bike is a really great book. It is about a duck that gets a wild idea and he gets on a bike and starts riding it. Duck rides around the farm. He sees a bunch of animals who thinks he's wonderful, and such a show off, and I'm better and stuff like that. Around the end of the book a bunch of kids rode on bikes to the farm and went inside. All of the animals started staring at the bikes. They all got on a bike. They all got the same crazy idea. "Lets get on the bikes". So they all rode around and around on the bikes. This is so awesome. David Shannon's pictures of the animals are so wonderfully expressed. My favorite expression is the horse. Is because you can tell the expression with out even looking at the words. I would tell you more but then you wouldn't be reading the book because I would of told you the whole book. I would recommend this book to anyone because it is a really great book that you won't ever forget. K.C.

By skc123 (Michigan)
This was a gift for my 6 year old nephew. He doesn't typically enjoy reading and is sensitive about not having "baby stuff," because he is the youngest in the family. We were happy to find a book that was age-appropriate for him but also considered interesting/cool by his older siblings because of the humor and bold, unique pictures. The fact that his older siblings approved made the 6 year old like the book even more. It was a hit!

We originally checked this one out of the library, but we had to purchase it as it's a favorite repeat! What amazing artwork!!! Bold, beautiful, and totally engaging! The story is very funny, even to the youngest set. For my son, it's been a wonderful introduction to the concept of "thinking" and how to express and wonder about what someone else might be "thinking". It is definitely on our current "top 10" list of our all-time favorite books! Thank you for the duck at "The End" eying that tractor and scratching his chin... perhaps a sequel????

By Joy Sleeth (Greenbelt, MD)
This happens to be my nephew's favorite book (and it's the third copy he's worn out). Duck on a Bike a delightful story about a dare-devil duck who sets off an bike riding adventure. On his journey around the farm, he greets other animas who in turn get jealous of his biking skills. In the end, all of the animals get a chance to join in on the fun!

As an elementary school teacher, I highly recommend this book for children of all ages. The story is engaging and the illustrations capture the joy of the story!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Fun on a bike, May 11, 2008
By Kathryn A. Jordan (Joplin, MO)
David Shannon has once again created a valuable book for the youngest readers. Duck on a Bike tells the fun adventure of an average farm duck with a desire to do something exciting. The story begins with Duck's hungry stare at a red bike, and ends with the same look of desire, only Duck has found a bigger challenge in a tractor. This book has Shannon's signature full page, vividly colored illustrations of farm animals. Shannon's ability to depict human emotion in the facial expressions of animals is a good way for parents to teach children how to anticipate the contents of a story. This book is perfect for young audiences who have just learned the familiar sounds of farm animals. Since the predictable introduction to each animal begins with the standard animal sound, parents can encourage young audiences to interact with the story by voicing the sound of each animal. Duck on a Bike is fun, adorable, and a must read for every toddler and beginning reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent!, December 19, 2007
By D. Micham
I was hesitant to purchase this book. I usually try to buy books that rhyme, because they're easier and more fun for me to read (over, and over, and over). Though this is not a rhyming story, it is very cute and I love all the animals. It will be easy for me to engage my 3 yr old son with this book. I don't have his opinion yet since it's for Christmas, but based on his preferences, I know he's going to love it!

Even if you don't care for the "David" books by Shannon (which I don't), this is a great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  What E.R. Bird said - and a bit more, February 10, 2007
By Antiochus (Brookfield, CT United States)
My daughter had to hide this book from her 15-month old twin boys because they insisted on many repeat readings at each sitting. (Same with Brown Bear, Brown Bear--recently hidden, then brought out, and she had to read it to them 11 times. When they come to the end they start to whimper so Mom has to start again! lol!!!)

The big wonderful illustrations of Duck really captivate the kids. I think we'll have to spring for a copy. We have them over every week.

My two year old and four year old love this book! We checked it out of the library and were sad to have to return it. The story moves along in a very predictable way, yet has a great twist at the end. It gets read several times a week and has definitely become one of our family's new favorites!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Daughter is nearing obsession with this book!, November 13, 2005
By csinger6 (St. Louis, MO USA)
My daughter will be 2 next week and I'm actually looking for a few other books similar to this one... she got this as a gift when she was born and we just pulled it out a couple months ago for a new book to read - and pretty much have read it 2x/day since then. She has it memorized and doesn't want me to turn the pages because she's looking at the beautiful pictures. Highly recommend this book!!!

My son received this book for his second birthday two months ago, and it has been his favorite since then. we read it a few times every day. the pictures are great, and the text is short and understandable for a 2 year old. the pages are quite durable, which is good, too. Overall, highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Duck rides on!, December 9, 2003
By "mhines38" (Westport, CT United States)
Duck on a bike is a favorite in my house! My favorite! My two year old wants it almost every night. My four year old loves to "read it" and my eight year old really does read it to his brother. The pictures are wonderful. It's simple yet clever and totally enjoyable!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A delightful childrens book, November 25, 2003
By J. A Magill (Sacramento, CA USA)
Of the dozens of books on my two year old's shelf, this is mine and my wifes favorite. The delightful story engages my daughter and she enjoys the animal and the plot. It also offers great opportunities for funny voices and interaction. Several adult jokes are burried within the pictures that will also amuse.

All and all, this is the best recent childrens book you can buy. Don't miss the last page.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  pure delight, April 5, 2003
By sidnee williams (Ladner, B.C. Canada)
A children's librarian had mentioned this book for my "Time for Two's" circle time. I fell in love with this book right away and it was a joy to present in class. It's a step into pretend and a walk through a magicical barnyard where anything can happen. I recommend it especialy for the illustrations which are enchanting. This would quickly become a family favorite.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  David Shannon Connects, January 3, 2003
By Karen Zollinger Taylor (Salt Lake City, Utah USA)
David Shannon knows kids and demonstrates it with winner after winner. This is my favorite of his books. The illustrations alone are worth the purchase. I enjoy the book as much as my son. The adventurous spirit of the animals brings out the kid in all of us.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Duck on a Bike, June 10, 2010
By Jennifer Dunagan (Georgia, USA)
The illustrations jump out at you, demanding your attention. Animals talking get children's attention right away.
This books demonstrates kindness towards the duck from all his friends even though they all felt something different. I loved the ideas that each animal had about them being on a bike.I'm sure small children will be delighted with the dialogue and the colorful pictures.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Delightful!, May 18, 2008
By Backroads (Northern Utah)
There is something incredibly funny about farm animals riding bikes--oddly, this is as close to normal as David Shannon ever gets. It's a cute little ride around the farmyard, if you're willing to suspend your disbelief about the laws of physics and comparitive animal sizes. My students love listening to this book and looking at Shannon's bright pictures.

By A Customer
This book is simply terrific.
There are many subtleties in the illustrations, so pay attention.
My favorite pages are the 2 with no words...the expressions on the animals' faces are priceless!
This is a read and re-read and read again and again.
