David Shannon gets the essence of "Westie-tude", February 18, 2006
By Andy Orrock (Dallas, TX)
|
|
My family had a Westie. David Shannon's "Good Boy, Fergus" completely nails the character of the breed. He's got every maddening but endearing trait of the "Westie-tude" down to a "T" in laugh-inducing drawings that you'll be eager to show others. Yes, "Fergus" is for reading level 4 - 8, but this adult reader was in tears of laughter thumbing through it. It's a compulsory purchase for anyone who has had a Westie make their indelible imprint on your life.

David Shannon=Dr. Doolittle?, May 1, 2007
By M. Allen Greenbaum (California)
|
|
How David Shannon can get inside the head of our best friend is beyond me. There must be an angry dog somewhere who's barking mad at his or her stolen royalties. In fact, I almost suspect that our dog, the undeniably intelligent, funny, cooperative-yet-willful Sadie the Golden Retriever both co-wrote and modeled for the book.
NO that's there's any physical similaries between Fergus--a SUPER-expressive white terrior--and Sadie. However, both these dogs know how to give "Attitude," with a huge capital A. WHoever said that dogs are easy; cats are hard never met Fergus: Destructive as a bull shopping for china, playful as an otter, and stubborn as the stubbornest mule on either side of your closest mountain range. The disruption starts early as a calm morning walk (Fergus' human holds a newspaper, perhaps thinking he might glance at the headlines) turns into a chase after a cat. Fergus' legs fly in different directions, his tongue lunges forward, and his eyes grow big. Shannon draws this (in gouache and ink, I believe) almost like a cubist painting, "Dog Descending a Porch Trying to Eat a Cat," with playful elongations of time and dimension. The next 2-page spread is all too familiar to dog owners: Fergus, despite much pleading, expert commands ("COME"), and good cop/bad cop negotiations, refuses to return from his post at a squirreled tree.
Fergus knows how to work it. He's cute and cuddly, and he knows it. He can follow the rigorous commands of "Sit," "Roll Over," and "Down." This is a great advantage when wanting that itch scratched or the always-hungry belly filled. Fergus hides under the bed when it's bathtime(though his butt shows), adhere to canine union rules by sticking out his head while Mr. Human drives, successfully--through sheer persistence--gets spaghetti table scraps, and LEAPS upon his human at the mere metion of "walk." He pees on the sidewalk, but that's a dog's perogative, and, before retiring for the evening, waits out dinner until the man squirts it with whipped cream. Dry Food a la Mode, anyone?
I love this book. It captures the obvious and the subtle in well-known dog behaviors, and does so sympathetically. Sure Fergus can be a little work, but Shannon takes the healthy attitude that this is what a dog is like. Show dogs may sniff their noses at this notion, but Fergus is just not one of them, and never will be. Shannon's illustrations are spectacular; the big expanses of color with inkshading and detail, copious use of yellow, and the big green palid jacket of Mr. Human have an exciting 1940's aesthetic. Fergus is all motion and emotion, and Shannon gets it perfectly and playfully, with lots of open space, curvy lines, and multiple actions upn which delighted eyes will dance. Fergus has appeared in ten of Caldecott Honor winner Shannon's previous books, but this is his first as the main character. He acquits himself like a very good dog, indeed.

David Shannon's Fergus MacLaggan is always into everything - except that which he ought! Readers and the children to whom they read will delight in the luscious illustrations and Fergus' antics and escapades, he who will not eat his kibble without that aerosol artificial whipped cream topping from a can!
It's a wonderful dog's life!

Having two Westies of my own, I was sure that David Shannon was writing about mine. He definetely knows what Westies are like right down to the precious smile on their faces. It is an adorable book for all, but especially the Westie Lover. Thank you David Shannon for making my day with your wonderful book.

A Dog gone good book, November 4, 2006
By Hart- 4- Kids (Toledo, Ohio)
|
|
I am an in home day care provider and my 2-5 yr old children absolutely love this book. I have a dog and the children related everything Fergie did to my dog Sammy. The art work is very colorful and realistic. The children ask for me to read this book every day at storytime. David Shannon is one of my favorite authors of Children's books. My day care children respond and relate to all of his books. I recommend this book for all families to share with their little ones. David has brought the simple everyday responsibilities of having a pet to life so a small child can relate it to their own dog's needs and habits.

It all comes down to how exactly you define a dog as "good", June 2, 2006
By Ramseelbird (Manhattan, NY)
|
|
Some breeds of dog are especially picture book friendly. Your bulldogs, of course. Your weiner dogs. And then there's your West Highland terriers. I daresay that if you were to ask what type of pup is owned by more children's authors and illustrators than any other, it would be this breed. Author Rosemary Wells (who wrote the "McDuff" books) takes hers to book signings. "Widget", by Lyn Rossiter McFarland created a series out of her character. And now, to top it all of, David Shannon has thrown himself into the mix. Best known at this point in time for his "David" picture books (though I consider his, "Duck On a Bike" to be one of the best readlouds ever conceived), Shannon has come up with a whole crop of misbehaving but adorable misfits. First came "David" and his ilk. Then trotted out, "Alice the Fairy". And now we've gone into the world of canines with the new dog in town, "Good Boy, Fergus!". He's a West Highland terrier who, according to the bookflap, is found, "in ten of David Shannon's books". Apparently being an extra has paid off well in the end. Fergus has gotten his very own book and he's attempting to take the world by storm.
Your first view of Fergus is of a little white dog playfully chewing a monkey toy, rear firmly in the air. The first official page of the book, however, shows the little guy's head just barely peeping up over the coverlet of a bed. "Good morning, Fergus! Want to go out?". You bet he does. Together, we spend a day with a dog. From tummy tickles to a failure to obey commands, to the rapid destruction of a houseplant, we see Fergus pull every trick in the book. No matter what he tends to do, however, in the end he's always a, "Good boy". And by the time you see him sleeping peacefully on the bed's coverlet, you almostn begin to believe it yourself.
Until now, I don't think you can say that Shannon's done out-and-out cute before. You can make a case for "Alice" or "David" having a kind of grody charm, but you certainly wouldn't slap a label of "Adorable" onto their books. With "Fergus", it's different. Something about this terrier has struck a particularly delicate chord in the author's heart. Fergus hasn't the jolly ugliness of David's triangle nose and sharp pointy teeth. Maybe it's the fuzziness that makes him so lovable. Maybe the fact that Shannon can make a fast-moving dog's legs look to be in four different places at once. Or maybe it all comes down to the, "Don't beg, Fergus", sequence. This consists of four different colored shots, three of which show Fergus staring meaningfully up at a man sitting at the dinner table. By the fourth panel the man has given in and Fergus, munching delightedly on a meatball, gives the audience a waggish wink.
Sometimes picture books with canines can be separated into two categories: For Dog Lovers Only and For Everybody. "Fergus" kinda straddles this line. On the one hand, it's a perfectly nice book with plenty of mischief to keep the kids amused with doggie antics. On the other, I think dog lovers will find this book especially amusing. The rest of us? Moderately. Unlike the David books, Fergus's antics are just those of a high-strung pup. You can't revel in his naughtiness because so much of what he does is just what dogs do. The two-page spread of him having peed on everything in sight on a street corner is kind of naughty, but what else would you expect from a dog? Now if David were to do that, it would be another matter entirely. Just the same, it's hard to resist such a good-natured book. And when it all comes down to it, kids will love this pup's crazy schemes. Fun to read, "Good Boy, Fergus!", is a worthy successor of an already enjoyable series.

A silly little book, March 19, 2006
By misschristytx (Katy, TX USA)

This is a very brightly illustrated book and very silly for children. I bought it because my [British] husband's name is actually Fergus and I thought it would be funny for my kids. We enjoy the book and the fact that the dog doesn't behave. I would recommend the book, even if no one in your family is named Fergus.

THE AUTHOR HAS NAILED DOGS AND DOG LOVERS PERFECTLY, September 6, 2006
By D. Blankenship (The Ozarks)

I loved ever page of this one and so did the kids in class. Most of the children have pets, most of them dogs, and could relate perfectly to Fergus and his owner. I myself have not been with out the company of a dog for well over fifty five years and the author certainly identified me! The illustrations in this work are great...you simply cannot help being attracted to Fergus. Fergus is all dog and does all the things a dog does. I cannot recommend this one highly enough.

A Must-Have Book for your Classroom, March 22, 2006
By S. Moses (Irmo, SC)
|
|
Have you ever read a book and thought the author had been looking through your windows at home because everything mirrors what goes on in your house?
Well, this book did that for me. Everything the adult says to Fergus and Fergus does (or doesn't do) happens to me with my own dog. My 5th grade students loved the book as a read aloud, especially after reading Red Fern and our constant stories of our own pets...we love our pets and many could relate to exactly what the person in the story was doing and feeling! A must-have for all libraries, at home and at school!

Fabulous Fergus!, January 1, 2007
By "Omnivorous Reader" (Atlanta, GA)
|
|
Good Dog Fergus! is the exuberantly illustrated day-in-the-life of wild West Highland Terrier Fergus. There is relatively little text to the book but what there is provides fun read aloud accompaniment to the real star--the wonderful drawings of Fergus and his adventures. David Shannon obviously has spent a lot of time around a real-life Fergus because he has an uncanny knack for capturing the movements, attitudes and facial expressions of a slightly spoiled pet. Many of the drawings, such as Fergus' burst out of the door after a cat, or his face after being "blow dried" by the wind from the car window, are laugh out loud funny. It would be a terrifically fun book to read to a toddler (and one that a toddler would very shortly be able to read to him/herself from memory), but it also makes a great gift for a dog lover of any age,who will appreciate Fergus' fast paced day.

ADORABLE illustrations that capture puppy mischief, February 18, 2009
By ccjello (Kansas City, MO USA)
|
|
Fergus, a mischievious little Westie, is simply adorable. Any dog owner would be amused by the illustrations. The text is sparse, but it communicates much. "Dont beg, Fergus." is followed by an uncaptioned picture. The next page shows Fergus grinning and licking kibble off his face -- it reads "Oh, all right . . . Good boy, Fergus!" What dog owner hasn't succumbed to that "how can you resist me, I'm so cute" look on a begging puppy?
This is a great picture book, best suited for pre-readers or enjoyed for the illustrations. There's no real plot or focus -- but it's enjoyable nonetheless. It's all about the pictures.

A good metaphor......., September 22, 2008
By Mom of a preschooler
|

My 4 year old won't tire reading this book, its been seven days now. Not just a picture book, but easy reading for beginners too. The character is funny, silly, sweet and very smart....characteristics attributable to my 4 year old, he loved to have a dog but is allergic to it. I would recommend books by Keiko Kasza too.
Tips for parents... read the book as if Fergus is there in front of you....be animated and your child will definitely love this book. As my son will go "Good Boy Fergus by David Shannon"...........

3 year old boy humor, September 7, 2007
By A. Volpi (Dallas, TX USA)
|
|
My husband and I were going to send this one back. We thought it was cute but that the subtle humor and irony would be lost on our 3 year old son. Luckily, the boy in question was rifling through the box and found it before we had a chance to return it. The first several readings got big belly laughs, and it remains a favorite in the bedtime lineup.

We are the proud owners of a West Highland White Terrier (Westie), so we eagerly grab any book about this lovable breed. This book described our dog so accurately we were sure David Shannon had borrowed our little furball. We are in a phase where our dog will head outside and not come in despite how nicely our grouchy we talk--just like Fergus. You do not have to be a Westie owner or lover to enjoy this book...but it is even funnier if you do.

Good Boy, Fergus!, August 26, 2006
By Petunia
|
|
Absolutely top flight! Young children will enjoy the book, but adult owners of Westies will fall in love with it. First, you'll feel a little sheepish, realizing how often you tell your own little "terror" he's a good dog (regardless of what he does.) Then you'll lose your heart to Fergus. He is the perfect stand-in for all our "itchy bo-bo's" (cf Mr F.,the scratchity man).
David Shannon's illustrations are superb. He has captured
the expressions--every nuance--of this little dog's personality.
Shannon seems to be something of a "little terror" himself. Look for the prank he he has played on his wife, Heidi.
This book is a treasure.

Feeds dog from the table, June 8, 2009
By Stefanie Summerer (Hamden, CT)
|
|
My 16 month old son absolutely loves this book. We have a dog that he calls "good girl" and I thought this book would be a perfect fit for him since it goes through Fergus' day. Unfortunately, he related a little too well to it. At one point in the story, the adult is sitting at the dinner table and Fergus is begging for some food. At first the adult tells Fergus not to beg, but then he gives in and feeds the dog from the table saying "Good boy Fergus".
Around the same time this book became my son's favorite, he also started throwing half of his meals on the floor so the dog could eat it. We have tried to stop him and tell him no, but he just laughs and continues to toss his food over the side. He used to do this when he was much younger, but we had broken the habit for many months until this book came along.
It is a real shame too since he has already memorized some of the words. "Cat!" But, I can't keep the book around since it is teaching him such a bad habit.

It's a Westie to a "T"!!, July 22, 2011
By Hope H. Richardson (Rumson, NJ United States)

My husband and I are currently owned by three Westies and one of them IS Fergus!! I can't tell you how hard we laughed reading this book, and we crack it out periodically just to laugh again. That's right - just two looney adults laughing. No children involved! The book was a gift to us from a friend that knows our "Fergus". The story is simplistically hilarious and the illustrations are charming. Any Westie owner will love, love, love this book. Now, whenever our dog does something hopeless, we just look at him glumly and say "Good boy, Fergus!"

This was a gift for my 6 year old nephew. He doesn't typically enjoy reading and is sensitive about not having "baby stuff," because he is the youngest in his family. We were happy to find a book that was age-appropriate for him but also considered interesting/cool by his older siblings because of the humor and bold, unique pictures. The fact that his older siblings approved made the 6 year old like the book even more. It was a hit!

You can tell this is written based on a real dog. Fergus - cute name by the way is so much fun to read. David Shannon captured the dogs expressions so perfectly. His eyes say it all! My son and I love to read this book together. It is easy to read, and the illustrations are just fantastic. We signed this book out from the library a while back and we kept going back for it, until finally I realized we just have to own it. Great book!

For anyone with any thoughts on animals, December 2, 2010
By E. Kennen (Georgia)
|
|
There are arguably two types of dog owners: those who know how to make their dogs behave, and those who don't. "Good Boy, Fergus!" will appeal to both kinds... and to cat-lovers ("boy, dog owners are insane")... and to petless people ("glad I don't have to deal with that"). This is an adorable, laugh-out-loud funny book about the relationship between a mostly unseen owner and his unruly canine companion. Shannon manages to make the story dog look so cute and true-to-life that I (as one of those well-disciplined dog owners) almost understand why he keeps calling Fergie a "good boy" when he's anything but.
With its quick pacing and funny plot, this is a great book to read out loud. While not as simple as Shannon's "No, David!", it is also a good story for beginning readers, who will feel like making the attempt just because the book is so worth reading. In short, this is a hit. If you or your young kids haven't read it, you should fix that as soon as possible.

Good Job, David !, September 23, 2009
By mom2sarah... (Windy City)
|
|
This is a really cute book that all dog owners (and dog lovers) should read. And although the drawings of the Westie is adorable, I think ALL dog owners will relate to the "doggie-tude" embodied by little Fergus. I especially liked the part when the owner is trying to tell Fergus to "Come here, C'mon boy, COME!, YOU COME HERE RIGHT NOW!" as this is a familiar cry to All dog owners, especially if their dog is part hunting dog. My Australian Cattle/Pointer Mix goes NUTS when he sees a squirrel out in our backyard. I think squirrels are EVIL. Watch, next time, how they situate themselves "just out of reach" wagging their bushy tail in your dog's face...but I digress. But this book lets me laugh at the situation as I realize my dog is not the only one that won't "COME" when I call him back inside. It teaches children and adults that essentially all dogs are "good" even when they are not listening to all of your commands. They are "good" simply because they love us and we love them. Very sweet "tail".

Fergus is our daughter's favorite book. The pictures are wonderful and the story is very entertaining. One thing we love is that there are few words which allows you to change it up from time to time and also get the child involved in describing the story and what she sees in the pictures. I have bought this as a gift as well as one of Shannon's other books, Alice the Fairy. I can't imagine you will be disappointed in anyway with this book. It is still fun to read after quite possibly 100 times!

David Shannon books are a big hit in my house, November 18, 2007
By A. Davis (New Jersey USA)
|
|
My son is 2 1/2 years old and is a big fan of David Shannon's "Duck on a Bike" and we have some other David Shannon books put aside for Christmas. We picked this one up at the library and I'll admit that I did not even look inside before we took it home.
When we got home and read it, at first I was disappointed because although the illustrations are gorgeous, it is not much of a story. It is mainly a picture book which describes an adult's alternating frustration and love of his dog. With one or two exceptions, you will not find a page in this book that has more than one sentence on it. Not what I expected from a bedtime story for my son.
That said, my son loved it immediately. He thought it was funny as we "yelled" at Fergus and the pictures are such that he could easily point and describe what he was seeing on each page. What is even more exciting for us is that this is the first book that our son recognized some sight words. Then, he started making up his own descriptions on what was on the page.
I guess I was looking for a story and all my son was looking for is a funny dog, some attractive pictures and an audience for his own story-telling. That works for me!
I give this 4 stars because, the pictures are great and although this book is a hit with my son, it still isn't the full story I had in mind. For David Shannon at his best, check out "Duck on a Bike".

A great book for Westie owners! . . . our Westie's name is also Fergus!, December 28, 2006
By Fergus' Aunt B (Pennsylvania)

Our family has been the proud owner of a West Highland Terrier named Fergus for six years, so you can imagine my delight when I discovered this fabulous book written and illustrated by David Shannon, about his Westie, Fergus! I purchased five of these books for Christmas presents for Fergus' mom, brother, grandparents, and all. We read the book together on Christmas morning and "howled" as we connected our Fergus to the main character of the book. Mr. Shannon very accurately captures the personality and body language of a Westie. This book is a must read and keepsake for all Westie owners!

Love it!, August 28, 2006

I love this book! I have a little Westie, Fennis, and this book is exactly him! My family all laughs when they see the book on the coffee table because it is just like the story was written about Fennis. This is a fun book for people of all ages, especially those that love their own Westie. My 7-year-old nephew discovered it.

I have a Fergus but a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. What a delightful little book filled with all of my and my dog's imperfections and beautifully illustrated. A simple Smiler.

I have a German Shepherd [definately not a little dog] but my grand-daughter loves the book AND I have to read it again, again and--well we all know what it means to have a special book. This is the perfect book for all who love and spoil their dog.

What a character Fergus is! Exactly what you want in a Westie and the kind of book your child will ove. Beautiful illustrations and a subtle humor that will make you appreciate the personality of this type of dog -- my Coco loves him!

How do you read this book to your child?, September 10, 2010

This is a strange book. A bunch of different words that is hard to link together. The picture does not respond to the words that are written. So, how can I teach my toddler words without confusing her? When I try to read this book to her she looks at me with a question in her eyes. Like 'what is this suppose to be or mean?' She loves dogs, but this book is too confusing... I would not recommend it and would not buy it again myself. We DO love Diaper David books, though.

DS knows his Westies!, May 29, 2007

As a fellow Westie owner (Westhighland white terrier--that's what Fergus is), I must compliment Mr. Shannon not only on a well-told story, but on his perfect depiction of a Westie personality. Just like Fergie, they are all about fun, are always optimistic ("the People WILL give me their food if I wait long enough"), live totally in the "now"--no grudges held, & have definite opinions about what they like (ice cream--yes, I KNOW it's bad for them--, walks & car rides) & dislike (dry kibble & baths). We have had the pleasure of living with 2 Westies, Mike (1994-2006) & now Maisie (born in Aug. 2006), & David Shannon has captured the heart of them both in his drawings and in the text. Good boy, David!

I don't have a Westie but this book makes me want to buy one, January 30, 2012

Other reviewers stated that this book describes the personality of a Westie so well, that it makes me want to get one. My 3 year-old son loves this book and thinks Fergus is hysterical. I think it's a great lesson how no dog or person is perfect and doesn't always listen or follow the rules just exactly how you would like, but they are still loved despite their feisty (and stubborn) personality. I bought one for a friend's son, for his 3rd birthday, and she said it's a favorite of his too. If you can read it with a Scottish accent, that's definitely a plus. Unfortunately, mine is not so good, but my husband nails it which keeps our boy smiling throughout.

Wonderful book for kids! So fun to read!, January 27, 2011

Great book!

I thought this book was ok. I really liked the pictures but i thought that it was quite difficult to understand the meaning and story line of the book. It was a book that you definatly had to read between the lines and really try to follow along. I had a bit of trouble reading it and i thought that it really wasn't the greatest book to read.
