Product Description:

A sturdy board book edition of the classic favorite finds six lovable animals using humorous rhymes to help Lloyd the llama discover what kind of animal his mother is.

The board book version of this popular recitation of animal characteristics is equally as delightful as other editions, with one key improvement: it's inedible. This robust reissue follows lovable Lloyd the llama on his quest to find out what percentage of the baby animal population has llamas for mamas. The rhymes are original and infectious, and the riddles are sure to have children shouting out the answers in anticipation of turning the page.

Youngsters often exhibit an insatiable appetite for adorable baby animals, and Is Your Mama a Llama provides plenty of fodder for fawning. Illustrator Steven Kellogg, however, manages to keep the pictures sweet without being saccharine. And rest assured, no matter how often your little one is compelled to kiss the critters, the sturdy board-book format will stand the test of time (and of course, slobber). (Ages 0 to 4)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Instantly endearing!, April 19, 2001
By "abookbug" (Dublin, CA United States)
I was first introduced to this book as part of a college course on literature for children, and instantly fell in love. Rythmic verses of this rhyming text with fill-in-the-blank style pauses at the end of each stanza help early readers learn to read, young children squeal with glee, and everybody within ear shot get the urge to get up and dance! In fact, a reading of this book has been produced on tape, with a wonderful latino-mambo background beat; it's also available in oversized format for reading in a group.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Loved by all my toddler nieces and nephews and their parents, July 9, 2000
By Auntie Terri (Jacksonville, FL)
I've given this book to every one of my nieces and nephews between 1-3 yrs of age and they love it! (Disregard the 4-8 age recommendation) The rhymes are fun to hear, the words are silly and the pictures are cute! They just keep giggling and their parents laugh reading it to them! This is always a winner as a gift (especially for Moms on Mother's Day). I now give it to new Moms-to-be at the baby shower along with my other favorite, Barnyard Dance.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for all ages!, February 23, 1999
By A Customer
Despite the recommendation that this book is for ages 4-8, my toddler absolutely loves it! She will bring it to me and insist on reading it over and over. The rhyming is wonderful, and so are the descriptions of the animals. Of course, the fact that my mother raises llamas makes this book even more dear to my daughters hearts.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very sweet book, makes you wish that your Mama was a Llama, January 29, 2004
By L. Bentley (Tucson, AZ United States)
My young daughters (now 3 and 7) dearly love this book. We have it memorized. It is sweet and the illustrations are beautiful. It is one of the few young books that I never get bored of reading. It is definitely a classic children's book.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Has all the elements of a great kid's book, March 25, 2005
By Jana Taylor (Iowa, USA)
I have read this book to my son frequently, ever since he was about 9 or 10 months old. The book has a rhyme and rhythm to it, and my son even from a young age picked up on it and can anticipate each "part" of the story. I think that this is very helpful to get the young ones to begin to enjoy books. The words are used in a repetitive manner and I think it will help him learn them better, and he likes the illustrations of the animals. Even though he is still quite young, I know this is a book that he will cherish as he begins to read on his own.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Curious and adorable little llama!, August 29, 2006
By C. Bashara (Austin, TX)
This was given as a gift and I'm so glad, because I'm not sure I would have purchased it on my own. This story of a inquisitive little llama teaches about exploration, discovery and diversity. The story is told through "whimsical rhyming riddles" (quoting the back cover) and the illustrations are gorgeous! This is a great way to expose your child to rhyming and different animals.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I know it by heart, June 25, 2007
By melissa (Ohio)
A friend of my parents gave me this book as a baby shower gift because her son loved it, and after continuously putting away outgrown clothes and toys over the past year, this book has outlasted every other gift!

I've been reading this to my son almost every night since he was born, and he gets a huge grin on his face as soon as I read the first sentence: "Is your mama a llama?" The story follows a little llama as he asks each of his animal friends this question. The rhyming is creative but has an easy flow as you read, which makes it good for keeping a little one's attention as well as for learning how rhyming works as they get older. The illustrations are colorful and detailed (not just outlines). My son always reached up to touch the orange "sun" that appears on several pages, so I kept telling him what it was, and now that he's older he will touch it if I ask where the sun is. I can see that this will be a good book to "grow into" as I read the description of an animal and he can "guess" what it is before I turn the page.

This book is a very special part of our bedtime ritual. At this rate we'll wear it out before the next child comes, but I definitely plan to buy another copy!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Wonderful, Fun To Read Book, December 9, 2005
By Lydia's Mommy (Roscoe, IL)
This story is so sweet and the rhyming makes it so fun to read. I got it from our library and I think I loved reading it as much as my daughter loved having it read to her. It is definitely one of the best books I've come across for infants and young babies.

One of the rare children's books that is clever enough for the adults to enjoy but fun enough for the kids to like. Besides, using the "Rhonda responded" rhyme is a stroke of genius.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Is your Mama a Llama?, May 18, 2006
By me="R3C02IKT2DK9BE"> 3 of 10 people found the following review helpful:
I believe that children should know that they have a mother and father. I also think the child should know who their parents are. The book Is Your Mama A Llama by Debroah Guarino is a good example of knowing who your parents are. I this book, a young llama asks all his friends if their moms are llamas. This book has an excellent plot. The book is easy to read and easy to understand. Also, the book flows well. I recommend that parents read this book with their children so their children understand how much they need their parents.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Pre-school Storytime Book, September 25, 2002
By Margo Smart (New Orleans)
"Is your Mama a llama? I asked my friend Rhonda." "I think not, is how Rhonda responded." Little llama wants to know if his friend's mothers are llamas too. Superb, rich illustrations of the baby animals and mamas, including such exotics as bats and swans make this a Storytime favorite. My group has this one memorized and love to read along with the illustrations. Remember they are only three! New members to the group feel comfortable giving the correct responses with the rest of the tried and true. Treat your group to the bigger than life version. Fun to turn the huge pages and the illustrations translate well.

My eleven-month-old daughter loves the melodic verse of this book. And so does her father, who has it stuck in his head like a song after we read it. I love the illustration style, as the earthy colors are very pleasing to the eye. This is a family favorite.

Simply a must-have for all children everywhere! Great for reading aloud - sure to be a fast favourite for everyone.

Needs to be made available outside the USA - a long way to go to find one if you do not have access to Amazon.com, all in the UK to whom I have given a copy find it delightful!

How about it Scholastic? What about a UK edition? Any more in store by this talented Author?

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Is your Mama a Llama?, September 11, 2002
By "debuy" (Bend, OR USA)
Is your mama a llama I asked my friend...? This phrase is repeated through out the book giving the intended audience of a pre-schooler the chance to assist in "reading" the book.
The sing-song verse clues the listener and reader to what each species Lloyd's friends are.

I have read this book to my pre-k to 1st grade classes and all have loved to join in the reading AND have requested to read it again and again!

This is a great book for the emergant reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I love the finale of this book!, January 10, 2004
By A Customer
This book is great-with a unique finale! At the end it says, "My mama's a-Llama! And this is...THE END!" In fact, whenever I watch a cartoon that ends with the words, "The End" onscreen, I recite this story in little bits and towards the end I say, "My mama's a llama! And this is..." and then the words, "The End" appear onscreen.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Llovely Llittle Llama Llegend, June 11, 1997
By A Customer
Riveting. Filled with suspense as the reader questions whether Lloyd will ever find anyone whose mother is of his own species. This story definitely bucks the trend of most of the children's picture books being published today which are either exceedingly preachy or insultingly simple. "Is Your Mama a Llama?" is neither. It is well-balanced between its illustrations and its narrative. A clever surprise is inserted as Lloyd finds Llyn although I would have preferred if she had been named Llullu which is what I would name a female llama if I had one.

I read this to my youngest son, Mizak, and he loved it. The illustrations compliment the verse extremely well and Miz fell in love with the character: Lloyd the Llama - he actually told me he wanted to be a llama someday. I'm now intruiged to get a copy of this on tape, after reading the previous review, to listen to it being read with a mambo beat. I thank you and Mizak thanks you. We'd definitely recommend this to every "llama" we know.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Too Much Fun to Read!, March 25, 2011
By K. Groh (Pennsylvania)
This has been a long time favorite in our house. It was perfect for our children from about 2 years old to age 6.

It has the most fun rhyming sequences and leaves the reader guessing after each page about what kind of animal will be revealed on the next page. When my son was little, his favorite one was turning the page to reveal the 'kangawoo'. I think I read it to him a lot just to hear his little voice say that one word.

The illustrations are packed full of details and my kids loved to find the mama's and babies pictured throughout.

A ton of fun to read, even when they know what's coming.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Mommy-baby Rhyme, October 7, 2010
By Lily Wang, Author (California, USA)
In this children's whimsical favorite, wide-eyed baby Llama tours from daylight to sunset, asking his animal-friends the repeated question, IS YOUR MAMA A LLAMA and gets a different rhymed riddle each time for him (and the young readers) to guess the answers. The visits to the bats, swans, cows, seals, kangaroos and his own kind constitute a whole heartwarming poem where different creatures with similar twinkling smiles gather together to celebrate the mother-baby bond. Children learn the characteristics of each natural residents mentioned, hear the rhythm of crisp verses and enjoy the visually enchanting illustrations that end with little llama finally returns and cuddles up with his llama mama.

By Mom of 2 (California)
My son received this book on his first birthday, and we've read it every night since. It was an instant favorite in our house - charming rhymes, interesting illustrations and a very cute story as the llama goes around asking all of his animal friends if their mamas are llamas. Each rhyme explains what makes different animals unique, and what distinguishes them from llamas.
This and The Big Red Barn are our must-read bedtime books!

Lloyd the llama asks his young friends of different species "Is your Mama a llama?" and gets cute rhyming responses that pose a riddle. It is fun for kids to "guess" the answer. I especially love the the detailed illustrations with the adorable mother baby pairs hidden in many of the pages. All in all quite charming and has been a favorite we return to again and again at slightly different ages (1-3 years).

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Who says TV is bad for children??, July 5, 2009
By Peter St Wecker (San Francisco, CA)
This book has been a great hit with our daughter. We bought it for her when she was less than a year old, and it continues to be a favorite at 16 months.

I give credit to hearing about this book from the TV show "Medium", where the youngest daughter was reciting it. That got me looking for a copy, and I'm so glad that I did. The rhymes are fun, and our daughter is starting to recognize the names of the various animals shown.

My only regret is that the author doesn't seem to have written any other children's books. Why??

This is the third time we've bought this book (1 for each kid). The earlier two copies were worn out. That's how much they like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love Lloyd the Llama, July 16, 2007
By emfrank (Baltimore, MD)
This is a wonderful book. It is a lot of fun to read aloud and has great rhymes. The pauses allow the child to fill in the end of the sentence (which is a rhyme). I read it in the classroom and my infant loves it as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love this book!, July 12, 2007

Great book! Teaches about animals. Flows very well and fun to read aloud. Illustrations are not that colorful or clear for very young toddlers. But I still like them because they are different and gives the book character. It took my 15 month old toddler a few times to start liking this book. But now she loves it and sometimes brings it to me to read to her.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great little book!, April 10, 2007
By Meijhen (Little Elm, TX United States)
We have kind of a family in-joke about llamas, so when I saw this book, I had to get it for our daughter. Since then, I'm so glad I did! She loves it, and I love reading it to her...the rhyme and rhythym are excellent, and the illustrations are classy and amusing. I love all the different animals, and the introduction to the different behaviors.
My daughter is one now, and she still enjoys this book; I imagine she will for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Kids Love It, May 13, 2003
By Robert B (Ontario, CA)
Is Your Mama A Llama is a great book for early readers. I used it to entertain a crowd of 1st graders the other day and the children still ask me to read the book to them again. It is filled with colorful, eye-pleasing pictures. This book is a value that I think all parents should buy if they have young readers.

By J. Angell (Minneapolis, MN)
This book is great! So far, my favorite in my child's collection. The rhymes are fun to read and the illustrations by Steven Kellogg are amazingly cute. I plan on buying more books by the same artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Is your Mama a Llama, October 30, 2002
By Jacob Marlie (London, Great Britain)
The book is your Mama a Llama is a good book for extremely young children because the book helps children see what different kinds of animals are in the world. The book also explains where the animals live and some common things the do. In the book there is a young llama that goes up to different animals and asked them if there mamas a llama, and the book even rhymes. I would recommend this book for parents to read to their children to teach the different animals or for beginning readers. Those who read this book should really enjoy it.

By Joey Roberts (State College, PA USA)
I love this book. It is so much fun to read to my daughter. She laughs all through out the book. We love to look at the pictures and name the animals before the book does. The pictures are cute. The story is fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best ever..., December 1, 2001
By Allen Hollinger (Caribou, ME USA)
My husband and I love this book even more then the kids, and my kids really dig it. It's not just for babies. We have all been caught many times wandering around mumbling, -"Is your mama a llama?" I asked my friend Dave.- in a singsongy rhythm. I just wish the author and illustrator would get together again and write more books, because their work together is a beautiful marriage of art in both the visual and written mediums.

I really like the content of the book and the illustrations. However the cover was pretty bent out of shape when it arrived, which was really disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  It is about a llama who kept asking if friends were llamas, March 1, 1999
By A Customer
I loved this because it is an Accelerated Reader book at my school. It was a really nice story. At the end the llama asks one of her friends if she was a llama and she said yes. They all snuggled together with their mothers at the end and lived happily ever after..

5.0 out of 5 stars.  my mama's a llama, is yours?, March 5, 2002

lling Lloyd the llama is the main character in this sectacular book. He asks all of his friends if their mama's are llamas but they all fail in telling him yes. This book is a rhyming book that leads Lloyd to the truth about who's mama is a llama. The setting of the story takes place in the moutains to the ponds in the valley. The main characters are Lloyd, Lyn, the two llamas.
Minor chariters are: Dave, Clyde, Jane, Freddy and Rhonda. The theme of the story is who has a llama for mama. The style of the book is fiction and it's rhyming in every two sentences. the plot of the story if who has a llama for a mama and in the end ,Lloyd finally finds out the truth. I recommend this fictional story to anyoone that likes a childhood mystery. Read and find out whose mama is a llama?

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Is your Mama a Llama?, May 18, 2006
