Excellent, January 9, 2007

My wife was worried when I ordered this book for my 11 year old niece, that it might have content that she wasn't ready for, regarding menstruation, etc. The subject was brought up in the "emergencies" section, and handled very delicately, I showed it to my wife and her fears were alleviated. I would say it is age-appropriate for any girl who is able to read at a second grade level.
My niece loved the book, she couldn't put it down all night on Christmas Eve, and had read the entire thing in 3 days. I also got my son "The big book of boy stuff" and they took turns reading bits of their books to each other, and then cracking up, all evening long. It was very nice to look out in the living room and see an 8 year old and an 11 year old with their noses stuck in books, while the PS3 sat, unused in the corner. That is about as good of a recomendation as it gets.

No Boys Allowed!, December 2, 2006
By The Rebecca Review (Washington State)
|
|
Bart King's five sisters provided great assistance with the writing of this giant book of girl stuff. Students in Bart King's classes also helped and through the kindness of many girls and women, this book evolved into what it is today.
The pink text in creative fonts makes this mostly black-and-white book much more fun. The images are sketches in pink and the interspersed pastel pink pages are especially pretty. On these pages you find things like:
Top Secret Shopping Information
The Fashion and Beauty Hall of Shame
Makeup Basics
5 Pages of Slang - "Lush" means very good, and is also the name of fun bath products.
The section on perfume includes information on aromatherapy and explores the possible essential oils to create moods, like rosemary can improve memory and concentration. Many of the sections address multicultural issues, like etiquette in Japan.
As far as humor goes, there is plenty to be had and it even left me laughing out loud or snickering to myself. The cartoons are especially funny and some are even helpful suggestions like the one about whining, still whining and "reasonable suggestion" that goes like this:
Picture 1: "Please, please, pleeeaasse?"
Picture 2: "I really need it!"
Picture 3: "Mom, having this laptop will make me a better student. I will be able to get the best education possible and fulfill my ambitions."
Topics include: Fun Stuff to Do, Holidays, Sports and Games, Etiquette and Manners, Beauty, Family, Humor, Fashion, Food/Cooking, Emotions, Girl Secrets, Dream Symbols, Girl Emergencies, Shipping, Wise Words from Wise Women, Best Friend Test, Friendship Bracelets, Dreams, How to Improve the World, Money, Pets and Animals, Sleepovers, Makeup, Cheerleading, mean Girls and Jerks, Nicknames, Handwriting, Slang, Babysitting, Dolls and Stuffed Animals, Girl Power, Boys, Friends and Cliques.
"The world is extremely interesting to a joyful soul." ~Alexandra Stoddard
This quote makes even more sense when you also read: "It takes over 200,000 frowns to make a permanent wrinkle in your forehead." The quotes by girls and women are also sprinkled throughout the pages and include wise words by Alanis Morissette, Helen Fielding, Constance Noring, Julia Child, Kate Winslet, Mother Teresa, Oprah Winfrey, Winona Ryder, Anne Frank and Jessica Alba.
Women of all ages will enjoy this book and find it humorous, creative, insightful, informative and intellectually adventurous. This is the book you would have loved to read in your childhood treehouse! The cover also makes this book more secretive when you reverse it so it says: "Composition." Without the cover, the front cover is imprinted with: "Chemistry."

Any young man who can manage to grow up (alive) and retain (most) of their sanity surrounded by five sisters automatically gains my respect. When that young man grows up to be Bart King, author of THE BIG BOOK OF GIRL STUFF, who uses the wisdom, never-ending frustration, and survival instincts honed while growing up with said five sisters, my respect turns to genuine admiration.
Like its predecessor, Big Book of Boy Stuff, The, this book is filled to the brim with helpful tips, life-saving information every girl needs to know (i.e. how to put on eyeliner correctly), the best reversible pink cover in the history of books, and much, much more. Don't believe me? Categories in this must-have book include:
Babysitting; Girl Power; Boys; Friends, Cliques, Secrets, and Gossip; Fun Stuff to Do; Holidays; Sports and Games; Dance and Cheerleading; Lies, Mean Girls, and Jerks; Ick; Nicknames, Handwriting, Words, and Doodles; Slang; Dolls and Stuffed Animals; Etiquette and Manners; Family; Beauty; Makeup; Sleepovers and Slumber Parties; Hair; Humor; Fashion; How Important are Looks?; Food and Dieting; The Mind, Emotions, and Dreams; Practical Jokes; Girl Secrets: No Boys Allowed!; Girl Emergencies; Pets and Animals; Shopping and Advertising; Wise Words from Wise Women.
Here's a strategy tip straight from Mr. King himself: If your brother or sister ever tells you to "shut up," try using this magical spell from ancient times: I don't shut up, I grow up, and when I look at you, I throw up. Problem solved!
And for those of us (read old) who have gotten behind on the cool (is cool even still cool?) phrases of the day, here's a few hints: chichi (pronounced shee-shee) means expensive in a tasteless way, harsh the mellow means to upset people, and a nooj is a harmless troublemaker.
I'm telling you, you need a copy of THE BIG BOOK OF GIRL STUFF! Otherwise, you'll never know what you need to know, while everyone else knows it, which makes you look perflippity (which means silly, by the way).

A big hit with 5th grade girls, March 16, 2007
By Mickey Hahn (USA)
|
|
I purchased this book for my 5th grade daughter and she thoroughly loved it. She brought it to a slumber party where they all took turns reading it and has since loaned it out to several of the girls who wanted to read more. She and I have read it together and enjoyed laughing at the chapter on jokes. It's filled with the usual "how to" stuff: how to deal with girlfriends, boys, school, etc. but written in a clever, engaging style. The reversable book cover titled "Chemistry" is a big hit too since they read at lunch time in the cafeteria and can conceal the subject matter from the boys. She and her friends now want to read the Big Book of Boy Stuff to figure out the male mind!

Inappropriate for Girls, Nostalgic for parents, August 17, 2007
By A Real Values Mom

I ordered this book for my niece's to give as a birthday gift. As I paged through it I realized the content was not appropriate for me to decide to give the book to them. An example would be explaining a "love triangle". I knew I would not want my kids to receive this information. They are bombarded with enough 'adult thinking' through all our forms of media and I did not think it was my place to educate them on such useless information.

My 9 year-old loves this book!, August 8, 2007
By K. Jacobi-Collins (Plover, WI)
|
|
I bought this book for my 9-year old daughter. She "kinda likes" to read, but it's not her first choice. SHE LOVES THIS BOOK! She reads it in the morning when she wakes up, before she watches TV. The paper cover comes off and it's labeled "Chemistry" so it doesn't look like a "girl book", in case you take it out in public (or around boys or adults). She refers to it regularly when she "needs advice" on things like - Parents, wearing makeup, clothes, jewelry, what to do about friends or boys, or fun things to do when it's raining. She's eating it up. I would suggest an age range of 8-13; it's written in a fun format, with short sections on a multitude of "girl issues".
I'm buying it for birthday presents for girls in her class. Highly recommended.

So HAPPY with my order. GREAT BOOK!!!!!, September 22, 2007

I bought this book for myself and for some of my friends birthdays. They love it and so do I. This book has a reversible cover that says "compisition notebook" and if you take the cover off, the cover is leather and says "Chemistry" on it. The Big Book of Girl Stuff has funny jokes, party ideas, information, ideas for any day, manners, lots of good advice, and much more for preteen and teenage girls. I laugh out loud every time I read this. My book came on time and is so funny!!! I recommend this for any preteen or teenage girl.If you are looking for the perfect gift, this is what you want to get. I thought some of the topics could have a little bit more details but other than that....GREAT BOOK!

This book was awful!, June 19, 2008
By J. McConnaughey
|
|
Me, a 13 year old, read this with my 12 year old friend and the whole time we were LAUGHING. The "cool slang" was terrible, and most of the stuff in there seemed to be aiming towards middle schoolers with the mentality of elementary schoolers. Of course, not everything was bad. But there was just enough of things that made me laugh out loud to make it a bad book. For example, an insult he gives is: "May the ice cubes from a 100 ice trays fill your bra!"
Yeah, a good insult if you want to be made fun of even MORE.
Also, the section on periods barely touches the surface. Basically it says talk to an adult because they don't know how comfortable people are with that information. Come on, it's The big book of GIRL stuff. You can talk about periods!
Overall, I can't see why this got so many great reviews. That made me literally lol.

She wouldn't put it down!, October 24, 2006
By Daniel R. Sharp
|
|
My daughter received the Big Book of Girl Stuff for her 10th birthday, among many other presents. As soon as the last present was opened, she disappeared with the BBOGS only to emerge at noon the next day declaring she'd read it all. She took it outside with her, slept with it, and I'm afraid, yes, it even went into the bathroom with her. After finishing it she showed especially juicy excerpts to the neighborhood girls.
The BBOGS is an addictive ride for the 8 to 13 year old girl.
Whether you are trying to hook your young girl on reading or just open her eyes to the wonderful world of girl stuff - this book will stick to your girl like stink on a monkey!

What a Great Book... What a Great Gift!, January 2, 2007
By Jan Koenig
|
|
My daughter is a discriminating young reader (picky, even!) She got this book as a gift, and after immersing herself in it, she invited some friends over for a slumber party. The group used THE BIG BOOK OF GIRL STUFF as the source for their activities and laughter, so I figured there had to be something to it.
After having read it myself now, I have to say that this book is not only very funny, but it's also educational and empowering. THE BIG BOOK OF GIRL STUFF is an absolutely great gift to give for a 'tween or teen... and since I've caught one of my boys reading it and chuckling, gender may not matter!

disappointed, March 18, 2010
By 1tiredmommy (VILLA RICA, GA United States)

Very disappointed in the chapters dealing with Mean Girls & Mean Boys. The book lists terrible "comebacks" for girls to respond when confronted by other mean children. It does nothing but perpetrate & inflame the situations. These comebacks turn good girls into mean girls. I tore those pages out of the book.

When I was at the bookstore, this book caught my eye right away. I looked at it, read the back, and that`s all it took to make me read it. As I flipped through the pages, I realized that this was the perfect book for me. I looked at the price . . . NEVER MIND!!! The next few trips at the bookstore I spent reading this book. Then I asked for it for my b-day.
I got it!
The suggestions were creative, and I could tell this was a, literally, big book of (awesome) girl stuff! I was surprised how MUCH I liked it. It was not for just little 8 year olds, but 8-13 girls.I strongly recommend this book!
It had a large variety of topics that any girl would enjoy.
Next time you go to the bookstore, look for this book and read it!

Perfectly Appropriate for Girls and Vastly Entertaining for Adults, August 18, 2007
By Celia Zitzberger
|
|
Based on the reaction of my 11-year old niece to this book, I would suggest that the only thing wrong with it is that, even at 300-plus pages, it's too short! She carries it around with constantly, laughing with her friends over its facts and quoting from it constantly.
Given the depth of fascinating information available here, this book would be a good read even if presented dryly. But the authors make their points with a light-hearted tone. All the witty asides make this book a strangely good read for adults as well as girls... and I wouldn't be at all surprised if there were some boys out there reading it too! (But only after taking off the dust jacket, which reveals the book's fake "Chemistry" cover!)
Highly recommended. See also The Dangerous Book for Boys and The Big Book of Boy Stuff.

Useful for parents too, August 8, 2008

I found this book at my daughter's school library and borrowed it for myself. I have browsed portions of this book and I liked it. I am planning to copies for my daughter and my niece... or maybe for myself and my sister so we'd understand our growing girls better. See their world from their point of view and be able to intervene effectively when "girl" problems arise.
Apart from that, it is fun and funny. While clearly my generation is so different from my daughter's there are still parts of the book that bring nostalgia and draw giggles.
And it's also entertaining to peek into their "private", "moms are not allowed" worlds.

A good book to get in a girl's good books!, February 7, 2008
By Annemarie (Amsterdam, The Netherlands)
|
|
The 8th birthday of my overseas friend's daughter was approaching, so I was facing the ordeal of finding an appropriate (and sendable) gift for a young girl in a different country, hardly having knowledge of current US children's books (nor of children in general, as a matter of fact). I started browsing Amazon and bumped into this book (don't ask me how), and based on the reviews I decided to go for it.
This is what her mom & my friend, wrote to me after its arrival:
"She LOVES the book. It's funny because she's a really good reader, but she would still rather have me read chapters to her at night instead of reading silently on her own... but this book is a big exception. It came in the mail on Saturday, and she has spent every night since then (except last night, when she was too partied out to do anything but fall asleep) sitting up in her bed reading like crazy. You picked the exact perfect thing for her (even though it's hard for me to believe that she's already old enough for that sort of thing-- how did this happen?)."
I don't know what EXACTLY is written in this book, but I can tell you, I am really tempted to get a copy myself now!

I got this book for my 12 year old daughter for Christmas. She hasn't put it down since the day she got it. I am getting lots of fun questions like "Do we have any henna powder?", which makes me laugh (who on earth has henna powder handy).
There are lots of laughs, and good suggestions for girls this age. I highly recommend the book.

The Big Book of Girl Stuff by Bart King is an excellent book for girls ages 8 to 15. It is a fabulous book. It offers great tips on things such as friendship, babysitting, boys and more! It teaches girls to be creative. (A popular sequel to the book is The Big Book of Boy Stuff.) But sorry boys, we are not reviewing the book for YOU! Bart King offers great advice as well as that little touch of humor that makes a book a wonderful experience to read. I loved this book, me having read it at least 3 times! This book is a great source for girls. From changing diapers to your first crush, this book won't let you down! Great present for Christmas also!

Don't lend it out, or you may never see it again!, September 28, 2006
By Janice (Billings, Montana)
|
|
The Big Book of Girl Stuff is very funny and a little hard to describe. It's a mash-up of fascinating features, a goofy activity book, and a hip help-book. (Actually, that still doesn't cover it.) But if you want to know what "burning the pom-poms" means, or when Hairball Awareness Day is, you've come to the right place!
And even with all the laughs, there's a subtext of empowerment and even educational material that gives this book some intellectual heft. (Check out that bibliography!) My suspicion is that though it's written for girls (and BY girls), The Big Book of Girl Stuff will be appealing to parents and -- perish the thought -- boys as well. (Although the authors point out that any boy trying to read the "Girl Secrets" chapter will receive a mild electrical shock.:) )
Oh, and just like The Big Book of Boy Stuff, it has a reversible cover, so it's perfect for sneaking into class!

Teenagers need advice?, November 19, 2006
By Genevieve E. Smith
|
|
The Big Book of Girl Stuff is a must read for teenagers. It should be required for all students in sixth grade.
It is easy to read. It is very humorous. Mr. King tells the difference between females and males maturation levels and other differences between the boys and girls. One example is multi-tasking on page 63. You see, Mr. King just states it as a matter of fact, not denigrating the boys. He tells the boys and girls how to get along with each other. Not only the boys with girls, but boys with other boys and girls with other girls. He talks about things that are embarrassing to teenagers. Read the chapter on Etiquette and Manners. Saving Face is a huge thing to the young teen. If they know how to handle some of these things, their years as teenagers will be much easier. This would be a great help to parents and teachers as well.

Personally, I love this book. Some reviews say that it is way to mature for younger girls. I do not think that this is true. It does have a "boys" section, but it is funny and doesn't say anything bad. It gives tips and interesting facts about dating for forgirls, such as "not dating your best friends ex-boyfriend." Apperentally this ruins 6 different relationships, and this is an extreamly true statement. This book is exreamly funny and I still re-read it to pass the time.

I got this book when i was nine and im very grateful that i bought this book because it really helped me when i was a kid. i think its perfect for all girls nine and up. it talks about everything a girl might what to know. it has stuff about how to set up a sleep over and a little get together. and this book has lots of facts about how people used to live in the olden days and how barbie dolls and other toys were invented. its not over detailed about your body changing or anything. it just mostly has just a little bit of everything, and if your in a sticky situation, this book helps you to get out of it. i think that every girl should have this in there bedroom, and i think that all of Bart King's books are amazing!

I purchased this book as a gift for my 11-year-old niece after she told me she was looking for a "Chemistry" book at the mall bookstore. After doing some research, I discovered that this book has a "secret" cover, which makes it look like a Chemistry book. This is her favorite gift, hands down. She brings it EVERYWHERE with her. The content seems to be geared at her age group. Topics include things like self-esteem, bullies, dieting, cliques, meang girls and gossip, manners and slumber parties! I wish I had a book like this when I was in fifth grade!

Teenybops to tweener girls, your "King" has written it all down for you., November 2, 2006
By www.metalcowboy.com (Portland, Oregon United States)
|
|
It was a safe bet that author Bart King could create a rowdy road map for all that is gross, good and holy about being a boy (see The Big Book Of Boy Stuff) considering he was and, emotionally speaking, still is, a lost boy of the highest order. But the true literary measure of a fully realized man/child is this; can he write about, for, and with girls.
Without calling Mr. King out as a nancy-boy (not that there's anything wrong with that) let's just say that to write the Big Book of Girl Stuff with such authority and authenticity, he had to take the words of rocker Pete Townsend to heart - "The world would be a prettier place if us blokes would just get in touch with our softer side more often... that, and if we'd all go out and buy my solo album."
One could argue that as a school teacher Mr. King had a barbie doll leg up on the competition, working the pastel colored front lines with his subjects. But instead of just taking notes and collecting a bunch of hip, coy phrases and props of the prepubescent girl, he's documented their manifesto and gone into the pink, sequined heart of these mysterious creatures. As a fellow writer, I am in awe, as an uncle to four nieces, grateful. The perfect gift for all the women in your life.

I Love This Book, May 6, 2011
By Laney (Michigan, USA)

This book is exactly what it sounds like... It's a big book... of girl stuff! Interesting facts, fun activities, cool food, etc. This pretty much covers everything. I was very satisfied with this book, as the writer's knowledge helped me through some hard times, taught me some stuff, and made me laugh! So, if you're a girl, any age, buy this book!

good book, for a little older kids, October 12, 2010
By James Smith (Baton Rouge, LA)

we bought this along with another book for our step-daughter. It's a good book, however it's a little too advanced for what we were looking for. However we kept it with the intention of giving it to her once she is much further into her teenage years.

She's 10 and got it for Christmas. She has poured over it for two weeks and loves it. THe reversible cover is awesome - as is the fact that the book says "Chemistry" if you take the cover off!

Really FUN book for girls!, December 22, 2010
By 2boys2girls

We got a kick out of this book and The Big Book of Boy Stuff. Just a fun, fun read for girls. My daughter (9 years old) especially liked taking it to school and bragging that she was reading a school book (fake cover shows it's a math book..I think, haven't seen it for a while and not sure where it is to check) and then showing her teacher what it really was. Her teacher thought it was great too.

HEY! READ ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, February 2, 2009
By Stormrella

Great! Your reading me. This book is PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you are/have a girl/daughter this is THE book. Even if your a sporty, tomboy, cool, not girly girl girl doesn't matter. It is the absolute must for any girl. I gives advise, talks about boys, talks about hair, activites, jokes, sleepovers, uh, you can read that in the table of contents picture. What is important is what it says. Like lets say hair. You might think that chapter is just about how to put up your hair or how life w/o hair is impossible, it acutally tells you facts. It says stuff about what it's made of, and the meanings of long and short hair. Along with retorts that you can say to your brothers. Now you may be thinking "oh, some great 'HEY! READ ME' topic, doesn't even give much detail," but even if you are just browsing PUT THIS IN YOUR CART!!!!!!!!!!! You'll never regret it. This book is the kind that you can pick up again and read over and over. STOP THINKING THIS IS A REVIEW, CUZ IT IS, PLUS AN ORDER!!!!You-have-to-get-th-is-bo-ok,-un-der-st-and?-?[...]
Thank for your time,
Samantha
P.S. GET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Although this book is AWESOME, and i recommend it to any "tween", i must say that my book did not come how i expected it to. "Like New" isn't stains on the front and a creased page! One thing i must say is that with the paperback version, the cover bends VERY easily. The book also seems to be written for 5th graders... but in the aspect they are in junior high. I actually found out about this book from my friend Caili. She got this book for Christmas MANY years ago, and would also bring it to parties! I guess the tiny flaws were worth the $5 i spent for the book. Overall, i am satisfied!

I love this book. I bought it one day when I was bored and even though it was a little under my reading level, I loved it. I would recommend it to any girl. It's great for a sleepovers or when your bored. Chapters include everything from Babysitting to boys, hair and humor, and funny quotes throughout and at the end of the book. MUST HAVE!

I am a 9 year old boy and my sister got this book from the library. I read the chapter on boys. From the first word I thought it was ridiculous and offensive. I read the whole chapter and thought it was just wrong. I bet that the big book of boys stuff is ridiculous as well. So thanks for nothing and bye.

I bought this book for my 12 years old daughter, but when I collected it my friend who is over 35 was with me started going through it and could not put it down. I ended up having to lend her before taking it home for my 12 years old. When my daughter got it she read it continuously. She would share various thoughts with me about the book and I must say I am happy I bought it for her. We have been able to address many topics we never thought to bring up ordinarily. Great book

Christmas Morning, January 4, 2012

My 10 year old granddaughter opened this book and did not put it down for about 2 hours. She even put down her Kindle Fire to read this book.First thing she picked up the next morning was the Big Book of Girl Stuff. I also purchased the Big Book of Boy Stuff for my 8 year old grandson. He also started reading it immediately and would not put it down. The books are wonderful for that age group (8-12 or so). Both of them sitting reading while toys, video games, and other Christmas presents sat untouched was a wonderful sight to see. I encourage all my grandchildren to read and these books were great hits.

My daughter loves this book. It is informative, but not boring, and covers a wide range of topics. It is a good book to read cover to cover, or to just look up a certain topic. It's a great book for any girl around 10 -14.

My niece is now 10 years old. I have gotten her a book, a toy, and some clothing for every single gift-giving event of her entire life. This is the ONLY, ONLY gift she has ever mentioned later that she ACTUALLY liked. I have no complaints! :-)

A Can't Lay it Down Book for girls., March 21, 2009
By Joe Gambill (Fort Worth, Texas USA)

My 11 year old Daughter asked me to purchase this book. She reads me something from the book every day. It has jokes, advice, magic tricks, and many other items to keep her well entertained and informed. It also covers those "subjects" that are very difficult for a parent to "bring up", the book helps open a conversation about those subjects.

LOVED IT!! Read it eight times and counting! ~FHHATA, May 4, 2012
By Faith Hope-Holly Ava Tori Adams (Instructions...

Right, so I'll be talking about the paperback version here; I think some many features will be available to those reading this book electronically, but it's just not the same, even though the text is. So those with Kindle versions of this book, lament your loss...
Loved this book!!! It can keep you laughing every single page, and--believe it or not--keeps you on your toes. (For example, a list of "filler words" includes "er," "um," "uh," and "help me I'm a big fat liar.') This helps hold your attention and keeps you engaged the entire book! And talking about the humor, even the most reluctant readers will eagerly tear through its pages, wanting to find more hidden laughter-provokers. Many of the girls this book is geared toward probably like pink. (And if they don't, the cover itself will scare them away in the bookstore!) So it's fitting that many of the words, headings, drawings, and even entire pages are the rosy hue! That, along with lots of space between text and a somewhat large, VERY inviting font, makes the book so much easier to read. Then ther's the pictures. I love them! The friendly pictures of stylish girls in hilarious dilemmas are comical! The facts in it are super super super interesting, and being fascinatingly weird; surrounded by seas of sarcasm and teasing and all those things that make you laugh even while you learn; and in that inviting format I talked about, any girl--no matter how nonfiction hating--will love hearing them. Well, I could just go on and on and on about how much I LOVE this book, but I think I'll stop--for now...

Just Plain WRONG!, April 23, 2012
By HRN$35
|
|
I got this book for my birthday a few years ago, and most of the material in this book is wrong. Why is a MAN writing about finding the right bra size????????? How does he even know about this stuff? Parts of this book (such as the dolls section) were fun and educational. There were also really fun sections like the slang part and there were funny comics too.
Some areas of this book include rude pranks to "play" on friends. One of them is to tell your friends to wear something crazy to school, and then when they get mad at you say "Oops! I changed my mind!". That's one way to lose a friend!
Overall, this book was decent, but most of it was downright inappropriate.
Men do not need to right about puberty in girls. There are plenty of women in the world for that.
There were also really stupid comebacks such as- may the ice cubes from 100 ice trays fill your bra!!!! OK, weird.
