Just an all-around great runner's magazine. Who's it for? Anyone who likes to run, from beginner to advanced, casual to professional. Here's a few things you'll find inside:
-equipment reviews (i.e. evaluations of the latest shoes)
-training techniques (tips from the pros)
-info about races (national as well as international)
-inspiring stories (to boost your motivation)
-nutrition info (tips to lose weight and boost performance)
A very well rounded running magazine with great information, I highly recommend it. Also for runners: The 5-Minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution if plantar fasciitis is affecting your running.

Real Motivator and Educator, September 9, 2002
By James Duckett (St. George, Utah)

I've been reading Runner's World for about three years now. It seems that whenever my motivation hits an all time low another magazine will end up in my mailbox. After reading half of the magazine I am forced to put on my running shoes and hit the streets. There are many educational benefits I receive from these magazines. I enjoy their training tips to help me improve my running time. I enjoy their list of races in the back of issue so I can plan what I want to run next in my geographic area. Most importantly, I highly appreciate the safety tips that are included. Running can be very hard on your body, as most of my cross country team learned in high school. This should become standard reading for high school students. I wish my coach had gone through an issue every month with us, highlighting how to run safely while diminishing run times. If you run, get this magazine. If you don't run but would like to, visit their educational web page to get an idea how to start and then subcribe to the magazine so, like me, you are reminded to get off your duff and hit the streets.

Not What It Used To Be, October 12, 2004
By J. Teske (Minneapolis, MN)
|
|
I've been reading Runner's World for several years now but I am going to stop. Month after month I'll look at the cover and get excited about an "article" they say is included in the issue, only to locate the "article" and find it is no more than either a fluff piece of information that must be targeted toward someone who has never ran so much as a city block in their life, or it is a three sentence answer to a reader's question that was sent in. Do these actually count as in depth pieces that warrant advertisement on the cover?
Furthermore, every issue is the same. There will be an article on losing five lbs. by the holidays/summer/race season - whatever month the issue happens to come out. There will be a shoe review (blah!). There will be a "Fifty Ways To Stay Motivated" piece - which is always the same commonsensical tips. And there will be a "Special Woman's Section" - which, when it shows up every single month, makes me wonder just how "special" it could really be.
Once in a while there will be a good recipe, or a decent (but way too short) article on a runner. However, you could save alot of money by only purchasing one issue of this magazine because, except for the pictures and graphics, all the articles will be pretty much the same month after month.

Mix of Oprah, "Sports Illustrated" and "Running Times", November 16, 2001
By What should .. (Glen Ellyn, IL USA)
|
|
Hardcore runners will read "Runner's World" because they have to. It popularizes the sport, and brings newcomers 'up to speed' about issues and techniques important to them, as well as clues them in on who is who out on the road. a great magazine, except I simply prefer the depth of training and racing issues "Running Times" provides a bit more. Really... I wish I could've given this magazine a 3.9.
Running is a funky subculture, and "Runner's World" defines and educates that culture.
Since the late George Sheehan wrote his famous column that emphasized running as spiritual endeavor, "Runner's World" has taken on an Oprah Winfrey/Deepak Chopra sort of generalist running philosophy. That's not all bad, as I think the magazine thoroughly encourages fitness through running.
It isn't all fluff. There is plenty for the more avid runner to soak up. The avid runner will find their marathon coverage, especially Boston and New York, impressive.
Their running shoes review is what any runner will benefit from. It details every aspect of what makes a great shoe, almost to the point of parody. However, parody or not, their analysis will help you buy the shoe you need for your foot for your distance in your environment.
Buy a subscription to "Runner's World," lace up, and get out on a run!
I fully recommend "Runner's World."

Ain't What It Used to Be, November 20, 2001

I've been running since I started college in 1972, so perhaps I am a bit of an old "you know what." However, in recent years, the magazine has become more of a fluff piece with less substance than it used to have. Perhaps I am nostalgic for the Sheehan columns, or maybe I just don't appreciate all of the "fashion" articles. I could use a little less of the cluttered graphics, and a bit of a return to the clean sparkling style of old. Of course, I realize that at 45 years of age, I am NOT in the "target demographics" however, I would appreciate a bit more for the older runner (not just the occasional "token" article).

Monthly Motivation, December 10, 2002
By Audiaa (CO, USA)
|
|
|
Runner's world is a very traditional magazine with geared towards mostly a middle-aged audience. The authors manage to give the same advice every month and make it sound different. That may be one of the things that makes this magazine so motivational. I keep reading about people who have run every day for the last fifty years or who run in 30 below weather, and I wonder what's keeping me off the roads. The Rave Run two page spread photographs are lovely. They each show a runner in a really cool environment with a quote. I have some of them hanging on my wall. I get especially motivated by the one of a man running through the woods when the trees are coated with ice and the ground blanketed with snow. It looks so beautiful, who wouldn't want to go out and run. The ask the expert or Q&A section has the most diverse and informative information from month to month mostly because the questions come from readers and the answers come for a variety of experts. The nutrition section isn't particularly useful. The science seems simplified to the point that it isn't exactly true, and the suggested menu for one of the carbohydrate dinners starts out with 1 cup broiled swordfish along with five or six other things; not really practical in my opinion. Runner's World has a nice coverage of racing events past (results) and future (racing calendars), and my hometown of Boulder, CO is mentioned somewhere at least once per issue :). Runner's World encourages everyone to be a winner even if he or she doesn't finish first. It is full of tips for beginners just staring to run and more advance information about training for seasoned amateurs. Some of the information is useful and some is not, but there is enough useful information to make reading worthwhile.

10 star best, August 24, 2002

We subscribe to 2 running magazines and Runners World is tops. We like it simply because we buy a lot of running and walking shoes and like reading about all the shoes in the market and which ones are suited to what type runner. They have a section just for women and our needs and problems and an excellent section on nutrition and recipes, as well as excellent advise on how to get and even more importantly stay motivated, especially in horrid weather. When in the summer being in a cool room or in winter in a warm one seems more pleasurable than going outside. But when you do and start running you get energized. I have enjoyed and taken the advise given over the years about keeping a journal and even regular photographs of how one evolves and get fit and healthy via running. The data on shoes is the best we have found and the photographs look like the real item when you go to check the shoe out and hold it in your hand and then lace it up on your foot! It is a truth in advertising publication.

Best running magazine by default, February 5, 2003
By A Customer
|
|
I have subscribed to RW for about 5 years. I am a Marine and I run lots of miles every week and about one race per month. This magazine offers good nutrition and training advice, and it also provides quality shoe reviews each season. The race guide leaves a lot to be desired, but then again, you can only devote so mnay pages to that subject. (The website has a better and more detailed guide.) The primary problem with RW is that it is very repetitive. My most recent issue had a picture of a female runner on the cover doing abdominal work. I scratched my head and pulled out my issues from last year and found a different girl doing the same thing on the cover of the same month in 2002. In any event, this overall is a good periodical for the money and trounces the competition in the running magazine category.

Fast food and headline news for the runner, October 13, 2003
By rigor mortis is my only hope for.. (Norman, OK USA)
|
|
|
If you like the "quick and dirty" format that is conducive to a busy lifestyle, you'll like this magazine. As a long time runner, I have been a long time subscriber. Many times, I read a headline on the front page only to find a paragraph or two devoted to the advertised subject. A recent example mentioned a faster recovery from long runs. Sounds great. At the age of 49, I'm up for anything that helps with recovering from a 20 miler. The "article" was a couple of paragraphs on soaking yourself in an ice bath. It even suggested biting on a towel so you don't wake the neighbors! If you're the type who would rather run by a fast food restaurant than cook dinner, or prefer CNN's Headline News format to their "regular" news because you don't want to be bothered with all the extraneous discussions, you'll like Runner's World. Personally, I devour it as soon as it arrives, but I rarely find myself referring back to old issues.

Well, it beats the other stuff, November 14, 2001
By kalla0069 (Maryland, USA)
|
|
Out of the mags in this field, Runners World has the best writers, format and tips, but stresses the losing weight aspect of running more than just plain enjoying it. Although I'm not too fond of the usual articles on burning calories and eating power gels, the monthly columns are well-written. I especially enjoy "On the Road," which directs you to the good paths in various cities and where to stay. However, after a year's subscription, this mag has run its course -- nothing new comes up besides the race dates.

Moderately enjoyable fluff, October 26, 2001
By meredith (Seattle WA)
|
|
Why is it that every issue of Runners World seems to have some hot babe on the cover, at least 1 article on how to drop five pounds, and another article along the lines of "energize your workouts?" I have a current subscription which I got free with some airline miles, but I'm not sure I'd spend my own money to subscribe. I do enjoy the feature stories they'll do from time to time on prominent distance runners.

Beginner-friendly...seriously, April 25, 2006
By Tauromaja (Cancun, Mexico)
|
|
I've been buying Runner's World off and on for years and everytime I pick up a copy, I never feel warded off the sport. I'm trying to train for a triathlon and everytime I pick up a magazine relating to triathlons in general, I feel like I'm the laziest ass on the planet. I'm not going to not do one because of this but it doesn't really help motivate a beginner. I love Runner's World because it's all-inclusive, for any level, for any age.
I don't get that daunting feeling I get when I pick up a tri mag and I think for anyone who needs that reassurance on a constant basis, RW really helps out.

Excellent magazine, March 14, 2006
By 007 (USA)

|
Being an infrequent runner and trying to get back into shape for the Baltimore marathon this year, Runner's World is indispensible. A number of the articles are encouraging and help me with training, diet, etc. The equipment reviews make me salivate (I wish I could afford one of the Garmin training watches), but in all it's a great magazine. I highly recommend it!

on-line ordering intentionally designed to trick you, September 12, 2010
By Gringo Perdido (Washington DC)
|
|
The on-line ordering system makes you decline additional special offers at least 5 times on sequential pages - it's appears to be purposefully designed to trip you up, since the "special offers" and promotional "free gifts" have almost identical names; for instance the "Training Log" is free, but the "Training Journal" is extra. It looks like you are just clicking a box to accept a free offer, but it's not at all free. After managing to avoid those extra charges, I ended up mistakenly hitting OK to add a Women's Health subscription to my order since it actually looked like I was just confirming the Runner's World subscription I was trying to make. Yes it was my mistake, but it seems like it was purposefully deceptive and my cc was instantly charged. There was no order review page despite the fact that there had been a half dozen pages to add additional charges. Customer service is now closed, and to use on-line customer service I need an account # - so I have to go through the trouble of canceling the whole order next week. The website was intentionally designed to trick people and I consider it a deplorable business practice.

Quality has faded in recent years, June 19, 2005
By Adam Bourque
|
|
As other reviewers have noted the quality and depth of the articles in this magazine have faded over the years. Everything has been scaled back except advertising and large pretty pictures. The racing coverage is almost non-existant now. The good feature articles are now brief one-line and two-line snippets. Also, the issues are very much the same month after month. I was very disappointed with the redesign a few years ago. It seems they took a lot of the good editorial away in favor of a fast-food type, quick-read, one-size-fits-all approach. Experienced runners will not get much out of this magazine. New runners will enjoy it for a year or two and that's about it.

I ordered this magazine from Amazon over 7 months ago, and Amazon charged me at the time. I haven't received anything from them yet. Amazon customer service says they have nothing to do with my subscription at this point, and the magazine's customer service has failed to answer my request for information.
Don't buy a subscription here. There are probably better ways to do it. It's just not worth the inconvenience if they lose your order, and from the look of other reviews it happens regularly.

Your Best Friend, December 7, 2003
By M Boeck (Ohio)
|
|
Sometimes you need a friend to help you out the door and to motivate you to start your running program. This magazine did exactly that for me. Along with its thorough web-site, runnersworld.com, I started a running program that took me from running two minutes at a time to running a 5K (3miles) in twenty-two minutes in only fifteen weeks. Unlike many other magazines, this one does not over burden you with excessive advertisements and random space fillers. All articles are helpful and cover a broad spectrum of practical and entertaining subjects. The best magazine I have ever encountered, you won't be able to put it down!

Only one issue's experience, December 19, 2003
By A. Clabough (Northern Colorado)
|
|
I bought the issue because I was told there was an article about beginning runners training for their first half marathon. The article was mentioned on the cover. It turned out to be a fluff piece giving reasons why it was better to run a half marathon than a full one for your first long race. I didn't find a lot more depth. Motivational, some general ideas, but I didn't come away with a lot of technical information.

Um, no magazine, May 11, 2006
By Will
|
|
I'm sure this is a great magazine. But after ordering it and waiting 4 months I still don't have it. I have contacted the Amazon magazine service twice now and still don't know where my magazine is, or when it is coming. I was supposed to be coming in mid march (so there is a wait to begin with fyi). I gave this review 2 stars because I'm sure it is a good magazine, but the publisher apparently has problems working with Amazon to get it to my house, so they are not scoring to high in my mind.
I am nervous too that my once my subscription gets sent out, in November or something, that the year will expire in March because of their mistake.

Great runner's guidence, December 14, 2007
By J. Davy (Western, MD)
|
|
I started getting Runner's World a couple of years back when I was trying to get back into shape. This is a great magazine for the beginner all the way up to the best. Always evolving and learning new things, runner's is always on top of the latest and best ways to improve your running. I am not a marathoner nor a sprinter really. I buy runners for tips on form and also to find new routines to keep my runs fresh and improve my running. Every issue has tips and routines you can use to better yourself or just change up an old routine. If you want to get into exercising and don't know where to start, pick up a copy of Runner's World and get out there and start running.

Almost As Important to Me As The Daily Run, November 1, 2001
By The Pointed Pundit (Darien, CT United States)

I have been running for almost 40 years. For much of that time, my monthly copy of Runner's World has been as important to me as my daily run. I look forward to the monthly training tips, injury prevention pointers, the apparel guides and the nutrition tips. My favorite monthly feature is the "Rave Run", a panoramic photograph of a spectatular running environment. If you run, add to your pleasure: subscribe.

Dominant in its field...because it is fantastic., July 8, 2005
By a (Akron, OH)
|
|
If you run--and who doesn't--you must read this magazine. I've run since 86 consistently and have always read Runner's World. Over the years there has been a gradual shift from coverage of track and field to more information for every day runners. I love the changes.
If I could offer a suggestion it would be for RW to do more reporting on everyday runners and their training. Each and every one of "us" is an athlete and we can all benefit from learning about how each of us manages our training and how it has benefited our lives.
I loved the RW reports on President Bush, Will Ferrell, and Garth Brooks. I would enjoy getting more information on celebrity runners, but perhaps sending a journalist to train with the individual for a month or so to see their technique, cross-training habits and nutrition plan would be more informative.
In 04 (or 03), RW went to a higher quality paper and using better photos. I love the changes and the magazine.

Waste of money, January 19, 2010
By Doc Beech (Dallas Tx)

This magazine covers nothing that you can't find online. If you like shoe guides, and the same story over and over again just in a different town then by all means go for it. The magazine maybe has one small section that is useful each month, so save your money because they always publish that article online. You don't need this magazine, and it wont teach you anything. Iv'e been a subscriber for over two years now, and it has failed to impress me. I play rugby and i used to run when I was in the military for descent distances, and this magazine covers nothing grand or new. It does have a calendar though if your having trouble finding an event to attend. Overall save your money.

I have subscribed to Runners World only about 6 months or so, but must say that I have already grown VERY attached to it. I read and re-read every issue with great pleasure and enthusiasm.
The magazine is full of both very serious articles that outlines research findings and theory as well as lighter stuff with fun stories of races, equipment, people, nutrition and so forth.
It is a magazine written by runners for runners and those who would like to become runners.
I look forward to the next issue dropping in!!

A Must-Have Subscription for Runners of All Skill Levels!, March 5, 2007
By Franciscan Friar (Washington, DC USA)
|
|
I cannot say enough good things about Runners World. It is a wonderful magazine, the staff of which works hard to make this magazine accessible to all runners - regardless of the level. While many hobbiest or sport magazines first appear intimidating to a novice in the field, this magazine strives to include even beginners in the audience of its articles. Another nice characterstic of this magazine is the race calendar in every issue that highlights some of the larger road races across the country. The feature stories are also wonderful.
As one who has run for a very long time, I can attest to the value of this subscription. I will certainly be renewing this subscription for a very long time.

Great magazine for man or woman, November 15, 2006
By David Allen Hazlewood (Tacoma, WA)

Love all the covers. The information is informative for even beginner runners like myself. And especially with all the info they have on injuries and how to "get around them". Having had knee surgery at a young age I often experience pain when it is cold or I put a lot of strain on it. They offered really good advice as far as ice bathes and diffrent salves that would help.. and the DID!!

"Runner's Light", December 16, 2009
By Necmiye Eren (New York)
|
|
Once you get past the fact that every single cover features some blond nobody runner in skimpy clothing and a perfectly airbrushed body, you arrive at a magazine that is mediocre at best for runners who are serious about the sport as something other than a fun kind of exercise.
For the beginning runner, it has some nice articles about motivation, etiquette, and recipes, a race calendar and shoe guide. But this is not a magazine that pays much attention at all to the elite racing scene or advanced training, which is frustrating. Every edition is a rehashing of the one before it. Running Times, produced by the same company, is a much better bet.

I used to run during the "first running boom" of the 1970's and early 80's, but had taken a break of over 20 years. I used to read Runner's World back then. I started running again early this year, and have now started reading Runner's World again. I read perhaps 80-85% of it each month, and that's not bad. Most of the articles are quite good, and include inspiration and good information about improving running and overall health.

There's no better word to describe this magazine other than amazing. It contains articles for new and seasoned runners, and tips for both. If you are looking to run a 5k, Half-Marathon, Marathon, or just want to get started running this is the perfect magazine. There are articles on new equipment, new races, and even tips from pros. Most of the issues contain diet tips and exercise tips from award winning runners. If nothing else, the magazine serves as a great motivator to get out there and run!

Great Running Magazine!, April 29, 2009
By Chuck Rose (San Diego, CA)

I am a fairly new runner and have really enjoyed this magazine. A friend of mine found out I was running, and gave me her collection of older magazines. I stashed them somewhere for awhile, then happened to pull one out in a moment of boredom. I have not been able to put them down sense, and decided to get my own subscription so I wouldn't have to depend on my friend. This magazine provides great technical information, inspirational stories, good reviews for products I have needed, and funny stories as well. If you run, you'll love this magazine. If you don't run, it may turn you into a runner! :) Hope this helps!

This is a great magazine. I am a beginner runner and it is really good to know all this info. But the price on amazon.com is more than double the real price of the magazine. Go to the magazines website and get a year for $12 like I did!

Written at "your" level, and ready to take you higher, April 9, 2008
By Buckman
|
|
Every month this magazine comes to my place now, and gets me excited and ready for another month of activity. Even though I slice, tear, and cut-up this magazine, reading and underlining, highlighting, etc., when I take it in to work to leave at my company's break room, people are still looking through the remains and taking out sections and article interesting to them. There is something for everyone.
This magazine will improve your spirits while you're improving your body. With more physical exercise you become that happier person you've wanted to be. It gets you doing things with others too, when you find that special person to walk, run, or jog with.
There are articles about old bodies, young bodies, and in-between bodies, and how we can all improve!
Recommended reading, every month, for a great price on a small budget.

Valuable training plans and gear reviews, July 14, 2011
By B. Wueste (Boston, MA)
|
|
The biggest benefit I receive from my Runner's World magazines are the reviews on new gear and apparel and the various training plans and exercise routines. The gear reviews are great and they always highlight new shoes or new clothes and tell you the benefits and cost of each item. The training plans are also great - one issue was devoted to the half marathon and they gave you 4 different perspectives and training plans based on 4 different time goals.
There are also some interesting articles about various races and decent recipes and nutritional guides. I don't think advanced or really experienced runners would get much benefit from this magazine, but novice and recreational runners could certainly get some value from the material.

Dissapointed, May 2, 2011
By Bookworm (California)

|
My last subscription to Runner's World was in 2005, and I just recently decided to re-subscribe. First, when I ordered the magazine online through Rodale's website, they offer me a free journal, which they send me. No problem. Before they send me the journal, however, I received a package with a training log that I don't remember ordering! This company needs to examine their misleading practices, otherwise they will lose a lot of subscribers, myself included. Also, I find the magazine overloaded with information for beginners, which is okay, but they focus too much on it. They should include articles about pregnancy and running, vegan runners, running and age, running and kids, nutrition, competitions, etc etc.

A great magazine for runners, January 27, 2011
By Todd A. Hooper
|
|
I have run for years on my treadmill, but over the past year I have started running outdoors and actually entered a race last fall. I wanted to know what I was doing so I subscribed to Runners World. This is a great magazine. Each issue is full of knowledge for beginners, everything from terminology to helpful ways to train and avoid injury. I can't tell you how excited I get when a new issue comes in the mailbox. I learn about advances in shoe technology, new apparel and everything in between. I can't say enough good things about this magazine. Subscribe, subscribe now...

Newbie runner, May 11, 2010
By L. M. Everett (United States)
|
|
I can't rave enough about this magazine. It came two months sooner than what was originally quoted to me, and two months worth of magazines came on teh same day. I usually flip through my magazines, find the articles I am most interested in, read those, and am done in about 20 minutes. This magazine had great articles from beginning to end. It took me the rest of the day to finish one magazine (in bettwen taking care of kids, making dinner, etc). Love, love, LOVE IT! The articles give good insight to other runners, some who are advanced, elite runners, and those who have run for awhile but don't have the hard-core, MUST WIN attitude that a weekend runner like myself might have.
So far, it's the best magazine we have coming to the house out of 8 that we have subscriptions for. Can't wait for next month!

The other day I was reading people's complaints about not getting their magazines they ordered, and that very day, my first issue showed up (even before Amazon suggested it would arrive). The issue had a nice balance of entertainment and information, and seemed to be appropriate for beginning and more experienced runners.

Better than most, November 26, 2001
By Reader Writer (Portland, OR United States)
|
|
Runner's World always provides me with a little extra boost of inspiration to get me out the door and get running. And, unlike most fitness-related magazines that I read, it doesn't provide annoying beauty tips for women. It's about the sport. My only criticisms are 1) many cover stories focus on weight/fat loss instead of the other beneficial aspects of running, and 2) there could be just a little more substance. Often after I finish reading the magazine, I still feel a little hungry for more.

Rodale ripped me off, March 24, 2011
By labrabully
|
|
It is not one of my favorite magazines and the only reason I subscribed was because the price was reasonable and Amazon was running a promotion. Well, since Amazon did not meet its end of the bargain, I canceled this subscription 4 days from the order date, or so I thought. As it turns out, this subscription was never canceled because I had to do it directly through the publisher, something Amazon never told me. I have been trying to cancel this damn thing since February 8 and finally got a response. I paid $24, but the publisher, Rodale, is reimbursing me only $21. Never buying a magazine published by Rodale, ever!

Entertaining, Informative health magazine tailored to runners, November 4, 2011
By Heather N. (New Jersey, USA)
|
|
I recently decided to begin training for a half marathon and was looking for some inspiration/training tips when I came across Runners World magazine. Much like other health magazines it balances focus between fitness, food and fashion, with an emphasis on the running lifestyle. You do not need to be a marathoner to get interesting insights from this magazine, but novices may find themselves a bit lost in the jargon. Don't worry, you catch on after two or three issues). That being said, I've found it to be a well balanced magazine that is entertaining enough to keep me engaged during my cross-training at the gym and leaves me with at least a handful of new tidbits of information at the end of each issue.
If you are like me and read a lot of health/fitness magazines, much of what you'll find here is not new. You'll get much of the same common sense nutritional and fitness related guidelines that you would find in other magazines. What is nice, though is that everything relates back to the specific needs of runners. If you are just starting out, this is a great addition to your reading list, as it gives plenty of answers to common questions. If you are a serious runner and have been for quite some time, much of this will not be news to you, but there are still handy recipes and gear reviews to consider.
On the whole, I find it to be a great distraction during my workouts at the gym, and have found plenty of inspiration from the stories they include each month. It is definitely worth a look for new and seasoned runners, especially if you get a good deal on your subscription (I'm not sure I would pay the cover price, but <$20 a year is perfectly fine by me!).

Do Not Subscribe via Company Site, December 9, 2011
By Kelsang Gyatso

This looked like a good magazine. I subscribed through the company website on August 6th, 2011. It's been four months and I have yet to receive a single issue despite my credit card being billed 16.99 on that day. I wrote to their customer service twice, and they have not given me any response. They do not even have my details in their database so I could not log in on their website either.
Perhaps Amazon's subscription service system works better, but I would steer clear of the Runner World magazine's website.
