Squishey butt, August 14, 2007
By Ima Goober
|
|
This definatly adds much more jelly padding to your behind. I used to ache for days after a long bike ride. This fits quite snugly over your existing seat, then you pull a drawstring to make it secure. IT will also make your seat just a little bit larger. It stays in place and does not slide around. An excellent investment.

Comfy Seat, August 3, 2008
By Mark D. Grebenau (New Jersey, USA)
|
|
The seat of my bicycle is already well padded, but I found that the bikes in the spin center had much narrower and uncomfortable seats. I can take this gel base seat cover into the spin room with my water and towel, slip it on, and enjoy a more comfortable spin session!

Excellent value in a gel seat cover., November 3, 2008
By Technophile (New York)
|
|
This is my second gel seat cover. I'm already a huge believer in gel seat covers because I used to find riding my bike very uncomfortable and using a gel seat cover allowed me to bike a lot more with a lot less discomfort for a small investment. The gel padding takes the edge off the pressure on the pelvic bone and allows me (a heavy guy - 300+ lbs) to bike for hours. My last seat (not Bell) lasted 3 years - until the gel started to lose its integrity (and form loose chunks under the cover. I was a little nervous about the Bell Gel Base because it's so inexpensive. I was afraid it would smaller or thinner or somehow compromised - but no problems. The Bell Gel Base is just as good as any gel seat cover I've seen and fit both my large seat and my wife's small seat just fine (via the adjustable pull cord). The Gel is firm but deep and works great.
The concept with a seat cover is you just put it over your existing seat. The possible downsides are that it might slip a bit to one side during use. I periodically have to straighten mine out - but no big deal. The upside (over buying a special gel seat) is that it's less expensive and when it wears out you just buy another.

Helpful but not Miraculous, September 25, 2008
By Jess (Cincinnati, OH)
|
|
The seat cover fits my seat very well, and it stays very secure while I ride. There is a lot of cushion, and it definitely helps make my bike less painful to ride, however it is not a 100% improvement. The covered seat is still a bit hard to sit on, but I can ride comfortably for much longer periods of time than I could without it. I would recommend this product.

Bell Seat Cover...., June 23, 2008
By Kumar... (Boston, USA)

Before I got this product on, my rear end was quite unhappy with the hard, slender seat of my new bike. But since, it's been amazing. No more aching backside any more. This product is good for all, especially people like me who are a few pounds overweight. I do recommend this one.

Caveat Emptor, February 16, 2008
By Dano (Deerfield Beach, FL)
|
|
This really is a very nice seat cover, only it is made for thin seats and did not fit the exercise bicycle seat that it was advertised with. I was a little shocked that it was so obviously too small for the wide exercise bicycle seat. No one could have even tried to fit this seat cover. I would suggest that Amazon have a real human try to fit these things before pairing a seat cover up with an advertised exercise bicyle.
Again, the exercise bicycle and the seat cover are really nice. The seat cover just does not fit over the seat that comes with the exercise bicycle.

Comfort for starting bike riders, July 21, 2008
By N. Lavigne (Midland, MI)

I have finally committed to getting back in shape after my baby. Though I love riding in the morning, placing myself on an uncomfortable, unyielding seat was rough and just impossible! The gel seat has solved my problems and alleviated all my rear-end discomforts so I can enjoy my workout!

Horrible, June 17, 2009
By M (NY)
|
|
I am extremely disappointed with this product. I only bought one because my recent seat was stolen. I had it for easily 1-2yrs and it was still in pretty good shape. The one I recently purchased is horrendous. I will have to purchase another after only a month's use. It has ripped at the sides, the gel is coming out. I do not understand how all the previous gel seats I have bought have consistently lasted for at least a year and this one did not last even a month. This was the worst purchase made.

Came apart at seam quickly, August 16, 2009
By Jessijane (Paradise, CA)
|
|
I really liked this seat cover, it works great on my Giant spin cycle, however I bought it in mid April and haven't ridden my bike more than about 25 times since (unfortunately), but it already has started to come apart at the seam. It started opening in the back and now the side is splitting and the gel is oozing out. I wrote the seller to see if I could get a replacement, hoping it is defective or a fluke thing. If that's the case, I would be otherwise happy with the cover. In case you're wondering, I'm not obese and it was normal wear and tear/riding of the spin cycle, so this cover should have held up.

My bottom is happy, May 5, 2008
By Michele Christmas (Jacksonville, FL)

Believe it or not, I ordered my bike two days before I even ordered my bike seat and my seat arrived days before my bike did. I immediately placed my gel seat over the original bike seat and have had no issues and my bottom is happy and comfortable.

Does what it says, but wears out quickly, June 14, 2009
By Nomad of Mod-Blog (Shelton, CT)
|
|
I bought this item on June 1 to soften my experience on the hard seat of a Dahon Matrix. It works well, and far better than another competitor's seat which failed to protect my tailbone. The problem is, after only 3 rides (about 50 miles total) it has already begun to wear out. The stickers and wording are already almost gone...
[...]
...and the edges of the seat are already wearing out. For only $15, I was not expecting miracles. But I was expecting it to last more then 3 weeks before showing significant wear.

If it fits - you really can't go wrong, December 1, 2008
By Renshai Forever (Hollywood, CA USA)

Obviously you're looking for an improvement to your seat (no?)... Well this will be definitely that - gel is really a wise choice for comfort. If it's the only choice - I'm sure that's the million dollar question but for now gel is a step in the right direction...
But just make sure it fit's - other wise your having to make do with what you end up with and you wont wanna return it because it's just not worth your time... Like the old saying goes "desperate times are worth desperate measures" (I'm sure we've all been there).... Ha, ha, ha....

I'll be honest...after spin class, well, you feel a little uncomfortable....
This bicycle seat cover is perfect for spin class or just riding a bike. Protects your bum and helps you feel a little bit more normal after your bike dismount.
It's worth a try.

3.5 stars if I could give half ratings, April 22, 2010
By dredman1 (Trinidad & Tobago)

Item does what it advertises - cushions your rear from hard seats. However, I've had mines about a month now, and it's already beginning to get "compacted" or flat. It's no longer as soft as it originally was, and it now starts to get uncomfortable after about an hour or so. But it's still not as bad as the seat without it.
I use it on average twice a week for about 1.5 hours at a time.
Also, unlike some of the other reviews here, thankfully it has not (as yet??) split and the gel start to leak out. It also is a bit wider at the back than most bike seats, so it sometimes slides about and goes off center slightly, even if you tighten the drawstrings as much as you could.
Bottom line - it'll give your rear end some comfort, but if I could do it again I'll probably try for a comfy seat instead first.

Works great, October 25, 2009
By Bryan D. Adams (Misawa, Japan)

I used this seat cover on my moutain bike for about two and a half years. I road at least 20 miles daily during the summer and about 15 miles four days a week the rest of the year. I still have the seat cover, unfortunatly it has been in storage with my bike since I enlisted in the Navy.
All in all, I loved cover. The seat that came with my bike was just too hard for long rides on pavement, the little gem made it much more comfortable. Personally I haven't had a single problem with it, and it has done it's job very well.

Wears thin quick, May 31, 2009
By Amit Gupta (New York, NY)

This seat cover is very comfortable, but if your saddle is not the same size as the cover then the sides will wear thin quickly and the gel will seep out.
Within 2 weeks the gel started to come out the sides.

Me and my husband bought these covers and they suck. They are squishy but it still leaves your butt very sore after you ride your bike. Neither of us are overweight. We put these on our Schwinn bicycles. Neither of us like this cover at all.

A must have for a bicycle, May 18, 2011
By jschristian44
|
|
I thought I could get away with my standard seat on the new bicycle I got. It seemed pretty comfortable on my quick ride around the neighborhood. But after I installed this, I rode 4x around the neighborhood without feeling a thing. It doesn't seem like it would do much when you put it on, but I have to say it has made my ride feel like air. It feels like I am just riding on my peddles and frame. I can't recommend the gel seat enough. This one fit my bike very well and for a great price. Highly recommend it!

not very squishy, but better than nothing, February 22, 2011
By Multiple OS Runner

I use this seat cover on my Phoenix 98623 Revolution Cycle Pro II Exercise Bike. If you like cushioning, I would recommend that you continue to wear a pair of padded bike shorts in conjunction with this seat cover. Otherwise, it does a fine job of making the stock bike seat more comfortable. I also like that it is fully adjustable and you can tighten it with the pulley strings. No problems with the seat cover slipping off or moving during my workouts.

happy with the purchase, August 31, 2010
By andrew blaisdell

With such a mass-produced product there are bound to be many poorly sewn items that slip through the cracks, but I can say that mine was not one of them. I love having the option to pop this on rather than or in addition to my gel shorts liner.

not happy with the quality, March 11, 2010

I bought this seat cover to reduce the hardness of my original seat to my hybrid bicycle. After only two days of using this cover, the stitching began separating on the stretch material which goes around the perimeter of the seat. I returned the product for a credit ... not worth the price.

Soft Sitting..., September 6, 2009
By Bike Rider (Bay Area, CA)
|
|
If you're looking to soften the seat you're sitting on, this works. It is a little big (hangs a bit over the edges) but works well, and after quite few hours on it, the gel has stayed where it's supposed to. Recommended - especially given the (pretty low) cost.

Very comfortable. The gel pad has taken away all pain and made riding quite enjoyable.
However, after about 200 - 300 miles, the seam came apart and shows some of the gel. Not really a complaint, but it would be great if this lasted longer. I still consider this a good deal for $[...]

good until it melts, May 24, 2009
By KenCT (CT, USA)
|
|
I had a little trouble getting this saddle cover to fit tightly, it took some effort to get the ties real taught and to cross tie them under the seat. It worked pretty well for a while, but then over time it felt like the gel was breaking up and then I left the bike in the sun and the gel started to melt an ooze out of the material. That was it, it was ruined. It lasted one season of riding. Felt good when it worked. It did the job of getting me acclimated to my bike seat. After a good season of riding i didn't need it any more, the standard saddle is fine.

Dont buy it, February 28, 2010
By Teimuraz Bakradze
|
|
I bought it not for softening my saddle. The fact is I have a Selle SRL Titanium saddle in red color and I wanted something to use as a cover to preserve this expensive saddle during I transport my bikes or when I have to ride in very muddy conditions. So I bought this product purely as a "cover" and I didn't make much research on this item, supposing that "any will fit"
First of all, I was very unpleasantly surprised by the weight of this product. It is unreasonably heavy, very heavy. It is made very big just to be more universal and fit more saddles, but its not the best idea. If you apply it on narrow saddle, than you cant fix this cover at all. It moves and slips all the time. Fixing strand is another bad idea. In fact, I can't find any positive point in this product thus I can't recommend it. Don't waste your money!

Not for bicycles, May 12, 2009
By SMXSteve (Seattle)
|
|
I did a search on Amazon for bicycle seat cover. I saw the picture for this and the price and it looked perfect. Unfortunately, I scanned the reviews too quickly. What I thought I read was that it was a bit too tight so I was thinking this would be perfect for a road bike. But in reality it apparently is perfect for a STATIONARY bike. One of those with the huge seat on it. For a bicycle this thing is too big, at least for standard seats.
I rated it for the quality and price which is good. The description is misleading.

Easily modified gel seat cover., September 8, 2010
By David S. Hawkins (Pittsburgh, PA)
|
|
I own a spin cycle, which is great for indoor excersie obviously, but because it is stationary, there is little excuse to stand. Also, because I work from home, I have been trying to figure out how to sit upright and reduce pressure in sensitive spots. (I think if our backsides were supposed to support our weight, wouldn't we have been grown with calouses there?)
So anyway, I have a larger seat already which reduces pressure up front already. When I bought the spin cycle, the previous owners had purchased this cover already.
I used it as is for a few days and was quite happy with the results already. However, I thought about the pressure issue and decided to make a small modification. I cut a V shaped slit in the seat with the point facing backwards, right in the middle of the seat, where the depression is located. I pulled out ALL the gell from that point forward into the horn. Now the seat only has cushion near the back of the seat and as such, I have cut the forward pressure down by a huge amount. Because the seat cover is snug over the entire seat, it doens't shift around or move, and I still feel the stability of the seat.
However, I now have the handle bars on the spin cycle reversed, with a wireless keyboard sitting on the horns, and my laptop on the upper portion of the handle bars. With a small table on the side, I am quite able to work and be productive during my cycle time, meaning I can ride longer, and not feel like cycling is cutting into anything else, espcially my soft tissues!
I wrote this review while perched atop the spin cycle and I am a very happy customer!
The only reason this review isn't a five is this single question. "Why didn't they think of this?"

warning: easily stolen, March 10, 2010
By Sean B (Idaho, USA)

I bought one of these at Wal-Mart, worked great for a year, comfortable, easy to install, etc., but then it was simply removed & stolen by a passerby. I can't think of a good way to 'lock' it on so I'm just going with a comfortable seat that can't be taken off so easily. Be warned.

Comfortable....for 3 days, August 22, 2011
By MonroePe
|
|
While this seat cover did provide comfort for my long rides home from work, it only lasted three days. By the second day the fabric that covers the gel was starting to stretch and tear. By the third day it was almost completely torn at which point I took off the cover and put in an order for a new seat. Do yourself a favor and just spend the extra $10-20 on a new seat. I paid $30 for a seat that has worked great and is more comfortable than this pad was.

My Tail Bone Says Ouch, July 22, 2011
By BookMaven (Washington DC)
|
|
It's just not enough cushion for my poor tail bone! Perhaps the thin layer of gel may be enough for people already accustomed to riding, but for those just getting into or (like in my case) back into the sport, I'd suggest padded shorts instead. Those definitely eased the pain a lot more than the seat cover.

One of the best investments for my bike!!, August 25, 2011
By David Dreyer (SALT LAKE CITY, UT, US)
|
|
Great product!! I bought a new bike recently and have been getting my backside torn asunder by the seat. Hard stitching that runs right across the gentle bits, but with this saddle cover, I could probably ride for hours without a problem. I commute to work on my new bike and it was getting embarrassing that I couldn't even sit down for the first few hours I was at work because I hurt so much. But after putting this little baby on, I have no problems. I definitely recommend it to any and everyone who has a bike!

It made me start to love biking, September 16, 2011
By Georgia girl

My original bike had a saddle that made any ride over 30 minutes torture. I saw one of these seat covers and tried it. That's when I began to love riding my bike. Seven years and one bike upgrade later, I still use the seat cover on my Trek hybrid when we ride the rails to trails. The cover has held up well and I can ride all day in total comfort

Good product for a beginner cyclist to ease into the sport, January 19, 2012
By kate prather
|
|
I would say this product is good for beginner or someone who cycles infrequently. It will help alleviate some bum discomfort, but it won't 100% reduce it. There is nothing that will do this.
Please note that bum issues are a common complaint of most biking newbies and it generally takes a bit of time to "toughen up" your bum - it just takes time as you get used to riding. Ensure your bike is properly set up for you (e.g. right saddle size and type and right seat height) if you are experiencing prolonged issues.

Makes all the difference in the world, November 22, 2011
By KH1229 (North Carolina)

|
I have been using the Bell Gel Seat Cover for years. I am into indoor cycling (spinning), and I remember the very first time I took a class. I didn't have the seat cover, and my butt hurt for several days. I went out and got it, and it made all the difference in the world. I never take a class without it. It makes for a nice, cushioned ride. I've been using the same one for about 6 years. Honestly, I'm not sure if it should be replaced from time to time, or not. The gel is still in place, drawstring is still holding strong, and my ride is still comfortable. I highly recommend!

Bad Choice, November 10, 2011
By Melissa Pierce (Lansing, MI, US)

|
While the cover fit well around the seat, it did not stay put. It shifted to one side more than the other AND the gel oozed out after only riding my bike for 2 days. I went to my local bicyle shop and they gave me a completely new SEAT (not cover) for my bike. It is made of foam which is so much better in so many ways. Don't waste your $ on this seat cover! Go with foam!

My butt feels better, October 21, 2011
By Robert P. Stary, Jr. (NY, NY USA)
|
|
I'm very new to bicycling and recently bought a new bike and rode it 20 miles the first day. It took my butt about a week to recover! I bought the Bell seat cover and it really helps. Some people warned me that seat covers slip but I decided to give it a try since it was much less expensive than a new seat.
A new seat would probably be more comfortable, but the seat pad is very inexpensive and I didn't have any issues with it slipping.

Comfy - doesn't last, February 16, 2012
By GurlFriday
|
|
Bought in June. Used an average of twice a week for 20-30 min each use. The seat started showing signs of wear within the first two or three uses, but it was still usable. Now in February it has fallen apart. The seams finally gave and the gel is oozing out.
Gave it two stars because I did get some use out of it and it was comfortable while it lasted. But, it's not nearly as durable as my last Bell gel seat, which saw more use each week and still lasted a couple of years.
