4.0 out of 5 stars.  Like Eyes in the Back of your Head, January 19, 2008
By arlmar (new port richey, fl)
Have had this product for more than 1 year. I'm an avid cyclist, 3 times a week, over 3,000 miles a year (OK, I'm retired) During the summer most of my cycling is on country roads so it's imperative that I see what's coming before I hear it. It works well once you get used to it. First you must set it up on your helmet. With some of today's designs this takes some thought, but stick with it (no pun intended). Then you must position it so it doesn't block your forward vision. Practice around the house or walking outdoors until you feel comfortable. The mirror arm is quite flexible & strong so it's easy to move. The oval shape gives a large view & the mirror design increases the depth of field to make it easy to see the approaching objects. As well the mirror itself swivels making it adjustable for anyone. If you have to move it to another helmet I found that several layers of 2 sided thick carpet tape worked just fine to secure the base. The mirror which snaps on a little ball joint at the end of the arm became sloppy so I wrapped a small piece of painter's tape around it. It's quite strong though as I found out when I took a tumble off my mountain bike. I cracked my helmet & ribs but the mirror stayed on in one piece. Would highly recommend this safety device to any cyclist whether you bike on roads or just a neighborhood trail. I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars as I feel you should be able to order additional arms and or mirrors as needed.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Works for me, July 3, 2007
By John R. Bane (Bowie, MD USA)
The mirror-on-a-stick design looks silly, but it works. Using the mirror is simple and natural enough that I often look for it by reflex when walking down the road, without my bike helmet. Installation and adjustment are both easy - the flex in the shaft does make a difference.

The ball-and-socket joint at the end of the arm does wear out with time, letting the mirror swing out of alignment. I tighten mine up by forcing a piece of plastic tubing over the socket housing.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice mirror if you have the right kind of helmet, October 21, 2007
By The Dougster! (Lost Angeles)
It's a great little mirror, but won't stick to my helmet. You need a flat area about two inches square, where you want to mount it. Also, the glue failed to stick to my plastic hard shell helmet. I would guess it's fine for styrofoam helmets.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Functionally OK, but flimsy construction, October 22, 2007
By J Harp (NE Texas)
I've had two of these and both failed in the stem area after 3-4 months of fairly heavy use. Had to glue to the helmet with contact cement.

Worked pretty well until the stem failures. Mirror should be a little larger.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good when new, but doesn't last., March 10, 2008
By HD-Buff (Corvallis, Oregon USA)
I shouldn't complain, because it is light and easily adjustable, but I will. When new I experienced problems attaching it to my helmet, finally solved by using some double sticky foam tape over a wider area than the mirror fixture. Later, I would lose the mirror by knocking it off when on a trail, by striking branches, etc. I bought replacement mirrors. Finally I tied a short piece of string to both mirror and mount so if it popped off it would hang there to be popped in again. When the mount loosened up over time I tightened it by threading a nut over it, which worked until the last time when that snapped the mount off. Another problem is that the mirror is plastic which leads it to scratches, fogginess and discoloration. I used it well for over a year, but now I am moving on.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Un-hinged, April 16, 2008
By Photo Jo (Barksdale AFB, LA)
I was a little hesitant to do this review until I had used this item for a while, and fully gave it a chance since the first time I took it out of the package, I was manually moving the mirror around to see its range of motion and it came off in my hand. Not a good way to start a consumer/product relationship. Still I gave it a chance as I was in need of a mirror, and was excited to finally have one. The "assembly" was easy enough, pretty much peel and stick. Although if you have a helmet with no flat areas at least an inch wide, it may not work. It BARELY fit on my Giro helmet, but its stuck tight ever since so no complaints there.

If you are careful not to turn the mirror to a completely 'landscape' type orientation you have a pretty large area you can cover with the mirror. It's easy enough to adjust during a ride, and has saved my butt more than once already. I probably would have made the mirror more wide than tall if I had designed it, but it still serves it's purpose. I'd say my biggest gripe about the product is the hinge, once again. Not only does it come off in your hand from time to time, but if you are facing a particularly bad head wind, the mirror re-adjusts itself. One minute you are fighting against mother nature, the next you look up and all you can see is the ground. Not cool. Overall, I think it serves it's purpose and helps greatly, although I think the hinge could have been a little better.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  disappointing, September 19, 2008
By Robert Keeney (Grapevine, Texas)
I bought two of these mirrors for two different helmets. They worked fine, but the small oval mirror came out of the snap socket too easily. I lost both of the mirrors within days of purchase (under normal use). I called Performance Cycling's customer service and they agreed to refund my purchase. This would be a good product if the mirrors stayed put.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good, but flimsy connection mirror/arm, July 6, 2008
By W. Parker (Manchester, PA)
I've had the mirror for two weeks now. It took some time to adjust and get used to, as I had grown fond of my handle-bar mounted mirror.

I've noticed an increased field of view with the helmet mount, which is a great advantage when riding 8.5 miles down two major roads to/from work every day.

My only complaint is that the mirror detaches from the arm far too easily. Lost it the other day when a co-worker gave me a ride home from work since I'm lacking a suitable rain suit.

Will probably contact manufacturer to see about buying a replacement mirror if the co-worker hasn't managed to find it.

I would suggest finding a way to 'tie' the mirror to the arm to prevent loss, or maybe even go to the extreme of gluing it once you find the ideal positioning.

By Bryaan A. Ennis

the mirror takes constant adjustment, has too small of a viewing area, and snapped off wile i was riding across a bridge, and is now in the potowmac river.

the attachment to the helmet and flexible wire are pretty quality, though

is there really is a durable helmet mirror... with maybe a convex lens?

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Too small and difficult to see....makes me dizzy., October 10, 2007
By Bradford (San Francisco, CA)
Wow...thought it would be cool to see traffic behind me...but totally hard to use. You need to position your head just right in order to see anything. You'll be so busy trying to focus on traffic behind you that you forget about the things in front of you...better to just at a quick glance back and save yourself a little money. Sorry Cycleaware!!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  loose socket, June 18, 2010
By dancer (Tacoma, WA)
This is a terrible mirror. It stuck to my helmet well enough, but it often pops out of the attachment. My biggest complaint though, is that the universal ball joint is way too loose. It requires constant readjustment- the slightest head wind, down hill or road vibration and the mirror moves, rendering it useless. My husband has the third eye, and it's much better. I'm getting one of those.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Cycleware Bike Mirror, June 2, 2011
By ginny stafford
The Cycleaware Bike Mirror I got has not worked out very well. It was vibrating pretty much and made using it difficult and unsafe. Then a few days ago the mirror part fell off. I have no way of knowing where or attempting to find it. I hope this mirror was not the norm for this item.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Works well for a little while, January 7, 2011
By Big Ring Media Ries (Madison, IN USA)
What works well: 1) Mounting. I've mounted these mirrors to a multitude of helmets over the years with no problems. 2) Field of view. I can see clearly and the oval shape provides a much more useable image size than do round mirrors. 3) Adjustability. I can put the mirror right where I want it regardless of helmet shape or which bike I'm riding at the time. 4) Cleanable surface. The mirror cleans easily without scratching. What needs improvement: Just one item - the ball-and-socket connection between the mirror and the arm. This has been the point of failure on all of these mirrors for me and it comes much too soon, usually after one season or less of riding. The pros outweigh the cons, however, and I'm ordering another one now.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Not good, December 25, 2010
By Brata
Let me start with the mirror quality. Its bad. Its some reflective coated plastic which if you try to clean by rubbing will become very dull and unusable in night conditions.

Then the mechanism for holding it is poor. adjusting the mirror to view the rear is pretty tricky and by the time you get it showing the rear view the ball and socket holding the mirror will become so loose that every time you encounter some road vibration you have to adjust it. The rest of the part is good. The arm holds on to the helmet. But due to its very poor mirror quality and mechanism I will not recommend anybody to buy it. Its a bad product.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good mirror for street biking, July 3, 2011
By Barry W. Graves (Woodbridge, VA United States)
I have used other types of bike mirrors but, for riding over bouncy roads and trails none of them will last with the shaking. This one does. I does take a little bit of getting used to the small size but once you over come that it is easy to use.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Cycleaware Mirror, August 29, 2010
By Zulu (SoCal)
I've owned a few of these in the past and this one is a replacement. I ride in SoCal and experience a lot of traffic-having a mirror has kept me out of trouble many times.

This mirror is the best of the helmet mounted ones I've tried. The neck is flexible and can be adjusted in an infinite number of ways. The mirror itself is a nice size and rock steady when on my helmet.

The problem everyone seems to have (me too) is the tape used to hold the mirror onto one's helmet will eventually come loose. I tried to retape/glue the mount back onto my helmet once it's fallen off, but it never seems to hold as well as when new. As mentioned, this is a replacement and I'll likely replace this one in the future with another.

Amazon did have this on special and I took advantage of the deal and got two....I got it as scheduled; I'm a happy camper.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Didn't work with my helmet, March 16, 2011
By Handyman (SC USA)
I received the mirror as a gift (from my Amazon wish list). I was in the process of converting my commuter bike to trekking handlebars, so I could no longer use my bar-end mirror. The helmet mount looked like a good replacement. The product is well-made, but the mounting pad had to be on a fairly flat section of my helmet that resulted in the mirror being much too close to my eye and basically unusable. If your helmet is a different design, you might not have this problem. I returned it for credit (a little tricky since I'd already used the adhesive mount...but Amazon allowed it after several emails). And then I ordered the Zefal Spy mirror. It uses a strong elastic band to mount on the handlebar, and it worked great for my application.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Best I have tried so far, February 23, 2010
By James Paine (DFW, TX)
I have tried several helmet-mounted mirrors (including the Blackburn), and so far this is the best of them all. Most of the other mirrors were either a pain to aim correctly or were too sensitive to vibration (or both). I also had bad luck with the mirrors that attach to glasses - while they fit my prescription sunglasses without issue, I always had fit issues with my regular prescription glasses.

I have this mirror mounted to a Giro Atmos helmet and it has been a pleasure so far. I have only been able to ride with it a few times so far since the weather in Texas has been unseasonably cold this winter, but I have been impressed during those few rides. There is minimal image blur due to vibration, and aiming the mirror is trivial due to the articulating arm. Some might find the mirror to be on the large side, but I find that a positive and am able to move it far enough to the side that it doesn't obstruct my vision in any meaningful way. While I cannot report on long-term durability yet, I will update this review if I find problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  bike mirror, December 28, 2010
By dogteam
This is a good product but does have it's down falls. It is not made to wear with several helmets. In other words if you have several helmets better get several mirrors. Otherwise very good viewing of all things behind you. Some adjustment needs to be made when you take off your helmet and hang it up or set it down as the mirror does tend to get in the way but this is quite minor. Great product, would definitly purchase again and / or recommend to a friend to buy..

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best mirror out there, July 27, 2010
By Jack T Stiteler
This helmet mirror gives me a clear view of the road behind, and that means peace of mind and more energy for training. Forget the dorky image of a helmet mirror-- it makes me a better rider, and I love it. I've tried them all, and the Cycleaware is the most flexible and adjustable mirror. Take the time to get the mounting and adjustment dialed in, then ride with confidence.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Easy to adjust, good field of view, good design, December 19, 2009
By WL (San Jose, CA)
I've been using this mirror for a few years and really like it. Like my helmet, I'd feel a little unprotected without it. I used a handlebar mounted mirror previously - which was good - but having a mirror that rotates with your head provides more utility. You still need to look around you for hazards but this type of mirror reduces the time you take your eyes off the road. Most of my riding consist of commuting and some single track riding. The flexible shaft provides good freedom to orient the mirror for a proper view. The view is quite clear and not blurry (not much vibration). I even use it for off road riding, mainly because I forget to take it off and haven't noticed any ill effects from the extra bumps and vibration. The original mounting tape failed a while ago and was replace with a piece of double sided styrofoam tape you can pick up in most hardware stores. Free play in either the mirror ball joint or helment mount can be remedied with a dab of glue or shimmed with tape (gafers tape is great!). Just bought another one for a new helmet.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  great product, March 3, 2008
By scavermom (Indiana, USA)
I really like my cycleaware helmet mirror, this is my second one. I find it indispensable for riding safely in traffic. One word to the wise, however, when storing or transporting your helmet, be sure to remove the mirror and arm, leaving the base in place, otherwise you might lose it if it bumps into anything! (which is why this is my second one)

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Absolute crap, February 24, 2012
By Switch
Bought this product a week ago and got in in two days. Fast shipping but that the only good thing. It was easy to attach but felt cheap. The mirrorkept popping out of the ball socket during adjustment and on my first ride with it today i was not even a mile into my ride and the mirror just fell out of the socket never to be seen again. Not worth the $20 i spent on it (w/shipping) maybe if they made it more secure it would work better. I ride at an average speed of 15-15mph depending on the route I take and this to cheap to withstand that wind... what a pile-o-crap. Got my replacement yesterday and rode with it thia morning. The small mirror seems too small to quickky focus on. And it slowly went out adjustment as I rode. I suppose with no wind, and zero head movement maybe it would stay in place.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Not please with this item, August 7, 2011
By Doug
I have never rated a product before but felt compelled to rate this one. I found that the mirror was just about useless as it would not stay in a place for more than a few minutes while riding. I then had it sitting on my dashboard of my car in 80-90 degree weather (we are talking Denver here, not Dallas). The mirror actually warped in the heat so that it was unusable. I did not expect that.

3 weeks use and the mirror is holding up well. I suggest detaching the arm from helmet when you're not using it and storing the mirror somewhere where it won't get bumped around. It does feel flimsy, but hasn't broken. Definitely worth what I paid for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Wonderful strong and durable mirror., December 10, 2009
By Mr. Plata
This mirror has a very large viewing area in comparison to other helmet mounted safety mirrors. You can adjust it to any position you can imagine and it stays put no matter how rough the road or how windy it is. I have been caught out commuting in 30 mph winds and even when I move my head side to side the mirror didn't change its position. With that said it is still very easy to adjust as you ride if you need to. Great quality and the adhesive on the helmet mount is very strong, just make sure you follow the instruction on giving the time necessary to adhere to the helmet. You can also take the mirror on and off very easily if you so desire after adhering to your helmet using the ball socket.

The helmet mirror is exactly what I hoped for. It is easy to install and has very strong adhesive. (like a car rear view mirror) I've been riding with the mirror for a couple of weeks now and instinctively notice cars coming from behind and warn the group when their is a "car back". Don't know why I waited this long to buy one.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Imperfect, but the best helmet mirror there is., August 17, 2011
By Late-stage academic (Amherst, MA USA)
Why should you use this product? Doesn't it look just so lame? Here's the thing: you absolutely need to have a mirror when you cycle! It is just crazy to not know what's behind you, and you hotshot cyclists who believe that you can see what you need to by turning around are just idiots - you swerve when you turn (you can't help but doing so), and put everyone's life at risk. End-of-bar mirrors are okay for figuring out what's very close to you. Where they fail, for me at least, is in letting me see what's further behind me. This mirror, because it's so close to my eyes (and, yes, my eyesight isn't necessarily getting better), gives me a better field of view.

Right. So of all the on-your-head mirrors this one's best - why?
-It is securely fastened to your helmet (but see below - you need to glue it on, rather than relying on the supplied adhesive patch.)
-It has the most flexibility of all the products. This is incredibly useful because for any of these kinds of products you need to be able to adjust it very finely.

Now, this product has its shortcomings:
-It can be hard to find that sweet spot, which means you've got to fiddle with it - maybe by changing where it bends, maybe by moving the mirror.
-The adhesive is inadequate. Superglue the thing to your helmet, and if your helmet has air vents, superglue it to one of the horizontal surfaces inside the helmet since everyday wear and tear causes real stress to the base.
-The mirror tends to pop out if you transport your helmet much. I take a piece of black thread and tie the mirror to the stem.
-Eventually it will die - the stem or the base breaks. But I've been using these mirrors for about seven years of heavy riding and I've still not found anything better. (Although, note to CycleAware: when I do find a better product I'll immediately shift to it since you've had years to improve this and still haven't.)

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Good idea but poorly executed in the Reflex by CycleAware, September 26, 2011
By Jamatt
I have used bike mirrors before but I have learned not to depend upon them. Manufacturers tend to make the mirrors as light as possible and therefore the products are flimsy. In the case of the Reflex mirror, I found it flimsy. I bought the mirror a while ago but just recently took it out of the package for yesterday's 25 mile ride. Being a safe rider, I also used a headlight and taillight.

I mounted the mirror the night before to be certain of good adhesion to my helmet. My first impression was that the mirror was too small and the flexible arm was not rigid enough to maintain the mirror position while riding over a crushed stone rail trail. Even on smoother ground, the mirror arm vibrated as I rode and I found this very distracting. I developed the habit of manually adjusting and steadying the mirror before looking through it. I had to turn my head almost as much to look into the mirror as I would have to turn to look over my shoulder. The mirror can easily give a cyclist a false sense of security because it's field of view is so small.

Another disappointment is the ease with which the mirror became dislocated from its flexible arm. A plastic ball joint is the only thing maintaining the mirror position from rotating in its socket. When I hit a slight bump or a crack in the bike path, the arm had a tendency to rotate towards the ground due to insufficient retaining force in the helmet mounted bracket. These are two axes of instability that gave me the blues and detracted from an otherwise enjoyable bike ride.

The final disappointment came when I was on the return trip home towards nightfall. I passed under some overhanging shrubbery on the trail and ducked under as I usually do. When I had gone a few dozen meters up the trail, I noticed that the Reflex mirror had fallen off my helmet when I passed through the overhanging shrubbery. The shrubbery were thin and leafy and didn't exert much force on my face or my helmet, yet it was sufficient to knock the mirror arm from the helmet mount. Thus I lost the mirror and the flexible arm in about mile 21 of a 25 mile trip.

My frustration was so complete, my disappointment so exacerbated that I did not bother to return to the shrubbery to look for the mirror assembly in the dark. It had caused me more trouble than it was worth and I felt better off for having lost it.

In general, I think it is better to turn my head and look directly for oncoming traffic. That is what I have trained to do and it is what I have always done. For me, the mirror would have been a convenience if it had worked out. I depend upon my hearing and sight and there is no substitute for looking over one's shoulder.

If a cyclist is bound and determined to use the Reflex mirror, I suggest adjusting the mirror to its optimal position and using cement glue to permanently bond the mirror to the ball joint at the end of the flexible arm. Likewise, use cement glue to permanently lock the flexible arm into its swivel socket. This will make it less likely for you to lose the mirror but it won't prevent the flexible arm from vibrating as you ride along. Better yet, just turn your head over your shoulder since you will likely have to turn your head anyway to get a decent look into the mirror.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I'm hooked, October 29, 2011
By F. Kloster (Colorado)
This is my third one. Won't ride without it. My wife and I do a lot of riding on public roads and local bike trails. We have had a lot of difficulty over the years of me not getting so far ahead of her that we lose each other. It happened a lot in Germany and England spending a lot of valuable riding time relocating her. I have found that with this mirror I have her in my sight without having to constantly turn my body 180 to find her or track how far back she is getting. The best part about this is traffic awareness. We ride on a lot of busy public roads and trying to track traffic behind you makes the 180 turn of your head and body a dangerous maneuver. I can "at-a-glance" see the vehicles coming so I can ensure I am not tracking too far into the lane or can make a safe signal and lane change for any left hand turns or maneuvers. Almost as valuable as my cell phone.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great mirror for the Money, October 28, 2011
By Robert56 (Florida)
I have took two rides with this mirror and I must say that I really like it. It is the first helmet mirror I have had so it took a little while to adjust it, and get use to it, but once it is adjusted you can just glance at it and you can tell real quick if there is something behind you. Quick tip: If you get it I would recomend putting it on your helmet to adjust it to make sure thats where you want it before you peal the sticky back off to mount it.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  WHAT A PIECE OF JUNK, October 26, 2011
By DaGeek@reddirt.org (St. Louis, MO)
I commute by bicycle a short distance to work when the weather is reasonable. The road is fairly heavily traveled so I wanted something to see traffic behind me rather than feel it.
First, I could never get this mirror adjusted where it gave me enough of a rear view to feel comfortable.

Secondly, the mirror portion is attached to the stem via a plastic ball joint. I have twice lost the mirror because it has popped off. The last time I barely found it.
Now today, somewhere between entering the gate at work and walking into my office the stem and mirror has fallen off of the helmet attachment piece. I've yet to find it. Probably when I do find it, if I do, it will have been driven over.

What a piece of junk. What a waste of my hard earned money.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Returned it the day I got it., October 20, 2011
By D. Gutierrez (USA)
The mirror is TINY. I mean really, really tiny.

Admittedly, I've never owned a mirror like this before, so maybe this is the norm for cheap ($10-$15) mirrors, but it's not something I felt comfortable using. I could barely see anything unless it was directly behind me. I thought the point of these mirrors was to get a good sweeping view behind you. This mirror definitely didn't provide anything close to "sweeping."

I ended up returning it the same day that I got it. I ended up purchasing a different mirror: Safe Zone Bicycle Helmet Mirror It's quite a bit more expensive, but I'm considering this life-saving equipment.

When I get it I'll post a review and let you know if it lived up to my expectations.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  The best, April 14, 2012
By Tony C Webster ny
I just purchased my third "Cycleaware Reflex Mirror". Each on a different helmet.
I only had an issue with one of them and fixed it with electrical shrink tubing at the mirror connection. Best I've had by far!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Cycleaware Reflect Helmet Mirror: A Great Product, April 8, 2012
By Marshall L. Dermer
This is a great mirror. Over the past 15 years, this is about the third one that I've bought. The only problem I have encountered
is that the sticky pad that holds the mirror to the helmet can fail. After I have used the mirror for a while with the sticky pad, I
mark where the mirror was mounted, remove the pad, and hot glue the mirror base to my helmet. Works wonderfully.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Works as advertised, April 5, 2012
By MrMongolia
Works great, only regret is you can't turn the mirror part long-ways (landscape) but it is very sturdy, yet flexible. Love that it doesn't vibrate all over the place.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect, March 19, 2012
By Ken
These things are great. They are easy to use and they provide ample rear vision. And they are very cheap. I solved the loose mirror issue by putting a small drop of super glue on the mirror nipple and then letting it dry. The mirror stays firm and is still adjustable. I have used these for 5 years now.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Safety, January 27, 2012
By L. Lynch (WI)
Bought this for my daughter: I have the same product that I purchased easily 4 or 5 years ago. And mine is still going strong: it lost adhesive connecting the base to my helmet, but a little superglue solved that problem. Unfortunately, this product is just not as nice: specifically, the swivel point attaching the mirror to the stalk is flimsier and sometimes pulls off as you are adjusting it. If you're doing this on the fly, that is not so good! I ended up swapping with her, so I take the more fragile mirror and give her my trusty older mirror.
