Easy assembly. Built like a tank!, December 11, 2008
By Paul H. (Michigan)

I own a Jeep Wrangler. If you know anything about Wranglers, you would know that the trunk in a wrangler is just big enough to hold a pair of socks...if you fold them carefully.
I bought the Valley Deluxe Carrier about 9 camping trips ago and I couldn't be happier! The unit works like a charm. Unlike the last hitch carrier I had, this one has a nice "rise" feature built into it. This is very handy when going up or down steep driveways and roads. I also found that the "rise" feature helps keep your stuff cleaner in rainy/muddy conditions because it puts your items higher off of the ground and away from the tires. I have loaded it to the max and it works flawlessly.
The tall sides are a nice feature that set this unit apart from those of lesser quality.
If you buy this (or any brand) of carrier, be sure to get a nice set of 3 or 4 ratcheting straps to hold your gear in place. Ratcheting straps also hold my kids in place very well as I found that they always seemed to be able to wiggle out of the bungee cords :).

Does the trick, July 2, 2010
By P. Rabbitt (Silicon Valley, CA)

Okay, let's look at the product description:
* Black, weather-resistant powder coat finish
The powder coat finish looks good coming out of the box. However it was soon apparent that it's *just* weather resistant, not scratch resistant. By the time I'd assembled the basket on our driveway that much was clear.
* Fixed shank provides for extra ground clearance
Okay.
* Total weight of cargo and carrier should not exceed 500 pounds
We used this last weekend on the back of our CR-C to haul a bunch of camping gear up to the Sierras. I used two Rubbermaid storage boxes packed with gear and it fit with room to spare. Rubbermaid 1172 ActionPacker Storage Box, 24-Gallon
* Easy to install
Yeah, it wasn't bad. I recommend assembling the basket on a lawn though to help preserve the painted finish. Mounting it to the vehicle was easy, only made slightly more difficult by doing it solo and using this hitch pin: Softride 25219 QuietRide Hitch Pin See my review on that item to see what the pain was.
* Formed 2 inch square extension bar is reversible to be used in drop or rise position
I used this on our CR-V in the drop position, which was the only way the rear door would open. Ground clearance was a lot less in that position; we scraped the road a couple of times going in/out of driveways during fuel stops. (Only when my wife was driving...I would never do such a thing!) lol
One *IMPORTANT* note:
Last year we rented a cargo basket for our camp trip. It worked great, which prompted this purchase. The main difference between the rental basket and this one is the outer rail; this one is just a round bar, where the rental had a 8" solid metal lip all the way around.
It wasn't until we finished the 3-hour drive that I appreciated the difference. The open space of this basket's design allowed the hot exhaust to spew directly into the load...which melted a 6 inch hole into the Rubbermaid container directly behind the exhaust pipe. (By "directly" I mean 12-14 inches) We lost a ground tarp and two flashlights, all melted from the heat...and almost had fiery excitement along the highway since there were also two bottles of lantern fuel in that box! When I pulled them out they were hot to hold; a close call for sure - had they been packed on the other side of the box things could have gotten ugly. Maybe I should have noticed this, but between the rush of packing and the memory of the last cargo basket working so well it slipped by me. In any case, if you use this basket be aware of the location of your exhaust pipe versus the load.

Does what it says but be careful of picture, May 30, 2007
By trainman (Mt. Airy, USA)

The hitch worked great, easy to mount and put together. Be careful though, someone uploaded a picture that depicted the hitch being a fold up. You have to buy the folding shank separately for about $75.00. I was a little peeved because I thought it would be a fold up, but in the end I didn't need it to fold. If you plan on using it all the time, for a wheel chair for example, get the folding shank.

This does not fold up without separately sold accessory, May 3, 2007
By aseason (United States)

The product description is accurate: --this is a Valley Hitch Mounted Basket Cargo Carrier which measures 60 long and 20 wide. It comes with an expanded steel mesh floor and 6 high sides to keep cargo secure and in place. It is designed to fit a 2 receiver hitch with a minimum Class III or Class IV rating. These cargo carriers are manufactured from heavy duty tubular steel and measure 5/8 in diameter. The installation is a very simple procedure of just bolting two pieces together. It has a formed 2in. square reversible extension bar to drop or raise position. Heavy-duty, all-steel 5/8in. diameter tubular construction. Weather-resistant black powder coat finish.--
The pictures shown for this item include both the basket itself, and the basket folded up against the back of a truck.
However, the picture of the basket folded up represents the Valley Folding Shank for use w/ Deluxe Hitch Mounted Basket Cargo Carrier # 90590 (ASIN B00078CK58,) which is sold separately.
This Cargo Carrier does not fold without the use of the separately sold Folding Shank.

-Valley- Deluxe Hitch Mount cargo Basket, September 22, 2010
By Duane L. Walker (Meridian, Id USA)

Don't let the picture fool you, these carriers look like a decent carrier in the pictures -but... --It's a complete waste of money--, in my opinion. It's extremely cheaply made, hit and miss and very poor welds and just overall a very *light duty and poor quality* carrier. The expanded wire mesh floor on it is waaayyyy too light and thin as is the upper and lower tube rails as well. One of the top rails had been bent in shippment and all that was required to straighten it was to grasp it with one hand and give it a yank. That's how light duty this thing is made!
It's rated at 500 lbs. and a person *might* be able to carry that amount w/out any problems if it was all equally weighted and evenly spaced stuff with no sharp areas against the expanded metal floor.
I would have been very nervous in putting anything other than a very small/light generator on it as an example... I think it would've tore through within a few short miles on anything other than very smooth pavement.
I completely re-made it using much heavier material as should've been used originally. The rebuild added another 20 or so pounds of weight to it but at least now I can carry my generator now and other misc. crap without any worries.
Unless you plan on carrying only light soft type of stuff..., spend a little more money and get something of higher quality.
D. Walker

More gear AND more room in the SUV! Win-Win!, October 10, 2009
By Flo Smith (Houston, TX)
|
|
This is our second attempt to purchase the Valley 90590 Cargo Carrier. We first purchased the carrier in person at a brick-and-mortar store, but found the hardware was missing. One email to Valley Industries resulted in their offering to send us a hardware package at no charge. We decided instead to return the carrier to the store, and order the carrier from Amazon. I tell you that phase of our experience to say this: if you have problems, please use your internet to contact Valley Industries; they have great customer service, no questions asked.
Delivery from Amazon was perfect: on-time, and in perfect condition.
We previously used a car-top carrier, but decided we didn't want to use a 2-step ladder anymore to load on top of our SUV.
The Valley 90590 Deluxe Cargo Carrier is everything it claims to be. Assembly was easy, as is attaching to our Explorer. We assembled the carrier in the raised position, and couldn't be happier. We can still access the lift gate with the carrier attached and fully loaded. We had planned to take the carrier off when we got to the destination, and re-attach it for the drive home, but found this action was not necessary. We have come to appreciate the "shelf" that the empty carrier provides at the back of the vehicle; we put gear on it as a staging area for loading and unloading the vehicle without putting anything on the ground.
We have not had any discernible wobbling or rattling, using the hitch pin provided.
We use Rubbermaid Action Packers to keep our camping gear dry on the cargo carrier. One 48-gallon and one 32-gallon Action Packer fit perfectly side-by-side on the carrier. We really like the rails on all sides to secure the cargo to the carrier; we use extra strength bungees for tie-downs. We have not had any problem with heat from the tail pipe on our Explorer interfering with the cargo.
Unlike the car-top carrier, there is no difference in vehicle performance or driving with the cargo carrier than without it. We really like that there is no increase in wind resistance. We were concerned about extra space at the end of the SUV in parking areas, but we have no problems parking anywhere we go with the carrier. The extra length is still less than a super-large SUV or extended cab pick-up.
In every respect, this was a great buy. Our only regret is that we didn't get it sooner.

hitch mounted carrier, June 27, 2009
By twscat1 (OBX)

The carrier was easy to assemble and has two different mounting depths, one that is close to the bumper and one that adds some space in case you have a rear door mounted spare. It is light enough for one person to handle yet it appears to be constructed well. We used it with a Rola Expandable Cargo Bag, .Rola 59102 Expandable Hitch Tray Cargo Bag - 9.5-11.5 Cubic Feet to transport extra luggage to the Outer Banks and on the beach to carry coolers, beach chairs, etc. Works well and is highly recommended.

Missing parts, July 26, 2010
By Khataloguer (Galveston, TX)
|
|
The box containing this item had none of the nuts, bolts, etc. listed in the assembly instructions. I contacted the seller, who told me to contact the manufacturer, which I did. I should have just returned the item then, but it was big and heavy. The manufacturer seemed responsive, although they were clearly exasperated (with me?) by the second phone call. I did receive the parts (with two items still missing!) after two weeks and multiple phone calls. I was told three times I would be called or emailed about the status of their attempt to provide the parts, and did not hear anything two of the three times.

Heavy duty carrier works well, February 22, 2010
By Phillip D. Breske (Ocala, FL United States)
|
|
I own a 99 Jeep Cherokee with a factory trailer hitch. When traveling I carry two dogs in the back with the rear seat folded and wanted to be able to carry more gear without strapping it to the roof rack. This carrier is perfect for my needs.
First of all, it's heavy. The carrier itself weighs about 50 pounds, but it can carry up to the tongue weight limit of my hitch including the carrier weight. I bought it last week and used it yesterday for the first time and it didn't make a squeak or rattle for over 300 miles. Once I arrived at my destination, I simply pulled it out of the hitch receiver and stowed it in my folks' garage.
I couldn't find this anywhere in the product description, but it DOES include a non-locking pin for the hitch receiver. If you don't have one, you won't have to buy one separately. This is nice. However, if you intend to leave it on your vehicle unattended, you might want to buy a locking pin so the carrier can't be easily removed.
For this trip I simply strapped down my cargo with a 12-foot ratcheting strap, weaved over the top of the load a few times. I would rather recommend a net type of system or a cargo bag designed for this purpose. The strap works for large items, but if you have many smaller items a net or bag is better. Obviously, a waterproof bag would be ideal if you are going to be driving in the rain.
Assembly couldn't be easier. There are three main pieces--two halves of the basket and one reversible (up or down for ground clearance) hitch bar. (My Jeep has a 3.5" suspension lift and with this carrier mounted in the higher position the basket floor height is about mid-thigh.) Two plates are bolted to the two basket halves to hold them together and they sandwich around the hitch bar. Altogether it looks like it will last and definitely will hold the rated load. (The hardware includes lock washers under the nuts, but I also used Loctite on the bolt threads, just as a personal preference. All the hardware should be torqued to the specs in the instructions, 10 or 20 lbs-feet depending on the hardware.)
As usual, I deduct a star for "Made in China." I couldn't find a product in this category made in the USA.

Bad parts, November 14, 2009
By Curt Wheeler (Lakeland, Fl)
|
|
My mistake was being too trusting when I received an obviously repackaged unit. When I went to open three weeks later in preparation for a trip, I found a manufacturing defect by which Step 1 of assembly could not be accomplished because of mismatched ends. The unit had obviously been returned previously, and instead of being culled, was simply repackaged and sent back out. Highly irritating. The packaging was so tight that the box could not be reused, and the time/effort/expense of a return was not worth it to me. I will go buy local or from another company that is hopefully more trustworthy.

Valleys, no peeks, April 17, 2010

I guess my biggest dislike is that this "Deluxe" hitch mount Cargeo Basket does not fit the Valley Tow 91190 Deluxe Basket Folding Shank that I bought for $99. One would think that a product from the same company, "DELUXE" would be compatable, NOT. I'll keep it becasue I need it now. But people get it some where else. Valley tell me I'm wrong and how to make it work!

Terrible packaging, product damaged, June 1, 2010
By Pingo (El Paso, TX)

The item works ok, but beware. I set up a return for the original as the box was mangled on arrival and the basket had scuffs and dents. The replacement arrived in worse condition; same problem with the box. As they''re heavy and difficult to repackage, I kept the original item somewhat unhappy and had to send the replacement back. Bad customer service.

Does the job, built well, however..., January 1, 2010
By Ash Patel (cincinnati, oh United States)
|
|
I purchased this carrier for a 500 mile road trip where we did not have enough room inside our SUV. As always did tons of research and read all of the reviews. I won't reiterate what others wrote so just a few brief points. The basket comes in two pieces that are supposed to slide together. After an hour of trying to make this fit, I had to resort to several wacks from a hammer bending the metal to make it fit. The instructions called for two bolts to be torqued to 10 ft. lbs. I used a torque wrench and one of the bolts snapped before reaching the 10 ft. lbs. click. I'm glad this happened at home and not on the road. I would plan on replacing the two 3" bolts with a heavier grade.
The unit is solid and fits well inside a 2" receiver. I used an after market locking hitch pin that also fit perfectly. No regrets on this purchase.

Wide 60" Cargo Rack - Great Price / Good Quality, November 20, 2009
By Superjekyll (New England, USA)
|
|
I selected the Valley 90590 Deluxe Hitch Mounted Basket Cargo Carrier for two reasons: (First) I liked the 60" width compared to most others that were between 48 and 56 inches. This will allow for hauling my Rear Tine Tiller in the summer and other long items. Along with the width was the high 6" railing that will contain almost everything I would place or tie down onto the carrier. (Second) the price...I couldn't built any cheaper ($99.95 + Free Delivery) are you kidding me! The quality is great for the price. All the welds are nice and the paint (pretty sure its powder coated) should hold up well. I'll add some extra reflectors and maybe some miniature running a stoplamps to dress it out...Ok maybe not...but it would look pretty cool!
Assembly was like butter...if you cant thread together about a 10 bolts...uhhhh then learn how ... or just go to U-Haul and buy a cheezy one for like 3 times as much!
Installation: It weighs about 50+ pounds....and well, you gotta have some strength to put this puppy into the receiver. For those that might this is a heavy one..think again, it's about the lightest steel (60" wide) carrier you can get. If it's too heavy, then find something like and old milk create to prop up the back end and then lift the tougne end up and slide it into the hitch. This way you're only lifting a portion of the overall weight. The fit will always be a little loose so you may want use a locking bolt that pulls the tongue against the side of the receiver hole so the load doesn't bang back and forth.
I also picked up the cargo net for like $12 + (free shipping) just in case I have some loose stuff in the carrier.
Overall, a great Cargo Carrier for the price.
I'll be enjoying mine!

wish I had purchased the Carpod, April 24, 2009
By I gharib (Los Angeles, CA)
|
|
after purchasing this item I realized that tying down the cargo was not my thing... a few weeks later a friend of mine showed me a new product he had purchased called the CARPOD. It is basically the same concept as this basket, except that it has 22" high sidewalls so I don't need to tie down anything. Another cool thing about it is that all four sidwalls fold down and so it's much easier to store than this basket. I returned the item and purchased a CARPOD. [...]

Can't say I am impressed., April 27, 2011
By PaPa Bear
|
|
I opened the box up for the Valley 90590 Hitch Cargo Basket and I was a little disapointed in how light duty it is. Everything about it except for the 2 inch bar seems week. I also found that one of the Supports underneath the unit had only been Tack welded on and had broke loose I am going to take it to a Fab shop that I know and see if they can fix that, and maybe add some strength here and there. I just thought it would have been a stronger unit. Lets put it this way I would not try to stand on it accept maybe over the 2 inch tube but not on eather end I think it would just bend right down. We are taking it on our vacation and I hope we do not have any problems with it. I do not think I would buy from this Company again.

Frame so warped that basket will not fit hitch!, May 13, 2011
By caccool15 (Winston-Salem, NC United States)
|
|
I was excited to purchase this hitch basket a few months ago, and thrilled that it was eligible for Prime shipping. When the basket arrived, it was HUGE- even bigger than I expected, but almost exactly as wide as my Jeep, which was perfect. I put the basket together- the basket itself comes in two parts which attach to the center "yoke". This particular basket would not quite fit properly. only one of the two "Valley" plates included in the packaging, which are designed to not only add branding and appearance, but also to assist in holding the two basket sections together would fit. The other would not fit because the two frame pieces would not fit together completely flush. I figured that this was a minor problem, and not worth returning- there were several bolts and another plate holding the basket together- it seemed sturdy. Plus, shipping this thing back would have been an absolute nightmare due to its size and weight, I'm not sure it would even fit in my car.
So now, about 3 months after my purchase arrived, I am attempting to use it for the first time. I don't have a regular need for hauling items. I was extremely disappointed to find out that the hitch/yoke is so poorly manufactured that it will not work properly with my 2" hitch receiver. The hitch slides easily into the receiver, but then the pin absolutely WILL NOT go all the way through to properly secure the basket to the trailer hitch. It seems that the holes on this product were drilled unevenly and they do not match up w/ my receiver. This is a problem w/ the basket, as I have used other items with the receiver hitch without incident. Not only will the pin not fit through, but the basket sits very much at a slant, so that even if I could secure it to the vehicle, any cargo would slant and slide to one side.
The workmanship on this product is absolutely terrible. The pieces do not fit together properly, and the holes are drilled so poorly that it is unusable with a receiver hitch. I now have a $100+ piece of scrap metal that is completely unusable (it is unsafe to use if it cannot be secured to the hitch), and too large to do anything else with. Thanks Valley for having absolutely no quality control, and thanks Amazon for not checking the product out before shipping.

Perfect -- as described, November 6, 2010
By Major Amazon Customer (Southern California)
|
|
I updated this to five stars because Amazon sent me a new one and it works great.
I obviously received a previously opened and sealed box from Amazon. When I inventoried the parts, I found the hardware bag had been sliced with a razor and half the hardware was missing. Disappointing. I did call Amazon and they ordered a new one to be sent to me and sent me a return UPS mailing label and are paying for the shipment back. But I need to pack it back up now and get it to UPS. Amazon needs better Quality Control over its vendors. I saw a few other reviews like this among the mostly positive ones when I just checked. I am generally satisfied with 99% of my purchases with Amazon. Bad luck on this one.

cargo carrier, August 29, 2009
By Timothy D. Sheridan (indiana)

The company sent me a used carrier when I purchased a new one. I am very disappointed. If I had wanted a used one, I would have bought a used one. I had obviously been assembled, used, disassembled, and put back in the box. There were obvious scratches caused by the wrenches. I had to paint the entire unit to make it presentable. I will never purchase anything from Valley again.

Money Well Spent, January 18, 2010
By M. Prager (Orange County, CA)
|
|
This was the best money I have ever spent. I'm not as young as I used to be and this makes it so much easier to load cargo instead of trying to heave it on top of the car. We own a GMC Acadia and there was no problem opening the rear gate with the cargo hitch on and loaded. It's so easy to install, my 7 year old helps me slide it on and off the hitch. When I'm not using it, it stores in my attic. I think for Xmas Im going to decorate it and drive around with Santa and lights on my ass!

Excellent Hitch Mount Carrier, July 11, 2010

We purchased this carrier for use with our 2010 Jeep Sahara. Assembly was quick and easy. The carrier mounted right up without any clearance issues, even with the oversized spare tire. The basket rails make securing cargo with ratcheting straps a breeze.

Great Basket But..., July 1, 2010
By msvt (Boston, MA)
|
|
All of the positive reviews are as claimed. The basket is solid and the side rails helped keep the items stable. Overall, we are very pleased to have it. One big WARNING - your exhaust pipe might not like this basket. When we first loaded the basket, the car exhaust pipe was a good 6 inches below the basket. When we got to the camp site, everything looked fine. I started to put down the ground tarp and noticed it was significantly melted - look like I took a torch to it. Thinking back, it was on bottom of the basket. When we returned from camping, I propped up the grill on the side of the basket - leaving an air gap where the tarp had been. When we returned home, the basket at that spot was really warm but nothing else had melted. Bad luck? Bad design? Unfortunate coincidence of basket and pipe? I am glad we bought the basket, however, just need to remember to not put meltable things on that side at the bottom of the basket.

Valley delux hitch mount cargo basket, June 7, 2010

Worked great! I would also definitely order the rola expandable cargo bag with it. We weren't going to at first then decided it wouldn't hurt to get that also for the 17+ hour trip we were taking. Good thing we did it rained the whole way back and kept our things nice and dry! We camp a lot so I see us using it for those trips also.

Great Cargo Hitch Rack, July 19, 2011
By Bryon Studer
|
|
We bought this cargo rack to work with our Buick Enclave to extend the amount of stuff we can haul as well as give a place for dirty junk like garden dirt or multch. The rack works well. I thought the 60" would be too big...but SOOOO glad we got it. It fits perfect behind the Enclave, and does not extend past the sides of the vehicle. It sites up high enough that the exhaust goes under it and our cargo sat below the tail lights. We loaded it up with a large cargo bag and a heavy cooler and road tripped over 2000 miles from Alabama to Minnesota and back. Worked fine. Didn't know it was even back there. Didn't bounce or move in the hitch at all. It does what it should. Why not 5 stars (really a 4.5 stars but Amazon won't do the .5)? Two pretty minor things easily fixed. 1) the paint is a bit thin. I will end up eventually spraying it again...not a big deal, I just don't like scuffs. and 2) the reflective tape was only on one side not both...so it looked funny (again, my issue didn't effect function). I bought a pack of red and a pack of orange oval plastic reflectors at Walmart for $2 each and covered the tape on the back and sides. Works and looks great :). Great rack, holds a ton of stuff you don't have room for or don't want inside and a good price (especially with free prime shipping).

Good but not heavy duty, May 24, 2011
By Kenneth W. Norling (Buford GA)
|
|
I've had my Valley hitch about a month and I'm happy with it. I will say that I would never put 500lbs of stuff on this carrier. The wire mesh that is the bottom is medium duty at best. When I put my 47lb Honda 2000 generator on the carrier I have to make sure the generator straddles the center support beam or else the wire mesh bows too much.
I also want to point out that the reflectors you see in the pictures are actually cheap tape and not a true plastic reflector.
In summary, I'm happy with the carrier as I don't have heavy duty loads to haul. If you do, look elsewhere.

Perfect for extra storage, January 19, 2011
By Carly

The carrier was extremely easy to assemble, took maybe 15 minutes. Only complaint is that one of the bracing arms was dented. Decided it was more cosmetic and shouldn't fail so we didn't return it.
We used it on a 6 hour trip and had no problems with it. Love the open weave bottom and the side rails. We had a tote as well as the Rola 59102 cargo bag on it. Gave us a ton of storage. We have a Chevy Trailblazer and not only didn't have any clearance issues, but you could still see the taillights as well as the license plate.

Valley 90590 Cargo Basket, June 6, 2010

We were going to go on vacation with our daughter, son-in-law & our 2 grandchildren for a week. Between both families, our largest vehicle is a 6 passenger cross-over. This cargo basket allowed us to pack all of our luggage and toys for the week and allowed us to comfortably drive to our destination! Since then we use it to bring plants home, wet beach gear, etc. We are also impressed with its sturdy construction compared to others we have seen. Highly recommend. Joined Amazon Prime and had it expedite shipped at no additional charge over normal shipping.

Exactly as Advertised, December 7, 2009

We have a large family & have always had a hard time getting all of our luggage comfortably to our destination. We have a car top carrier & we've also towed a trailer at times. Both tend to be a hassle & really hurt our fuel mileage.
We decided to give this a try after reading the reviews of the many different Cargo Carriers. We were able to fit 5 very large suit cases on it along with a few smaller bags. We didn't have to have any cargo stored in the back of the SUV, allowing the kids to lay their seats back. We got 2 mpg more using this than the car top carrier due to the lack of drag on the truck.
We also recently used this to haul one of our race karts....not what we purchased it for, but it was nice to not have to use our trailer for this.
The only warning I would give anybody is to not put it in the lowest position.....we had to use a tarp since we were driving through some mountain snow and the corner of the tarp where the exhaust hit melted, allowing a little moisture to seep up through the bottom of the carrier. Thankfully, my wife thought ahead and lined all the luggage with garbage bags. Looking at our truck, we wouldn't have had this problem if we had mounted it in the higher position.

Good but not heavy duty, May 24, 2011
By Ken W (Buford GA)
|
|
I've had my Valley hitch about a month and I'm happy with it. I will say that I would never put 500lbs of stuff on this carrier. The wire mesh that is the bottom is medium duty at best. When I put my 47lb Honda 2000 generator on the carrier I have to make sure the generator straddles the center support beam or else the wire mesh bows too much.
I also want to point out that the reflectors you see in the pictures are actually cheap tape and not a true plastic reflector.
In summary, I'm happy with the carrier as I don't have heavy duty loads to haul. If you do, look elsewhere.

Ok for the money, August 9, 2011
By James (MN, USA)
|
|
I had this unit for a while now.
It's soundly made, but it does have one flaw.
The unit is assembled with joins along the middle axis.
No matter how tight you have the bolts, there is about 5 degrees of play laterally.
On mine this shifts with a loud "crack"
I cured this on mine by running a couple of beads of weld along the pieces that connect the frame to the center bar.
Problem solved.
Apart from that. It's a good little unit.

It is what it is..., August 3, 2011
By -B
|
|
I wish I could say that I love this hitch basket but I cannot. It is fine for what it is but is less than impressive. I purchased this basket to increase the amount of cargo room in our shrinking Rav4. I plan on using it to transport our camping gear for our growing family as well as those things (e.g. dirty tools, harvested animals, naughty children, etc.) which don't deserve a place in the cabin.
My initial impressions are not good. Here is my overview of this basket. It is constructed using low grade steel covered in cheap paint which scratches/chips easily allowing minor (cosmetic) rusting even prior to arrival. Whether the steel will stand the test of time, I don't know but have little confidence.
The Good:
1) This item was very reasonably priced. I purchased it on an Amazon Lightning Deal and saved quite a bit.
2) Free shipping is a huge plus with such a massive (50lbs) item.
3) The item was very easy to assemble (although it lacked required hardware, see "The Bad").
4) The bent receiver bar will allow most users to customize the height to meet their personal/vehicular needs.
5) I have 2009 Rav4 and was pleasantly surprised that I could open the rear gate (with about 1" of clearance) with the basket installed in the highest position using my standard U-Haul hitch.
The Bad:
1) Free shipping is good, but when the item arrived it looked like it had been mauled by a rabid wolverine. The box was so severely damaged that the UPS man wanted to make sure the contents weren't damaged before he left. They were but we didn't realize it at the time.
2) The item was damaged due to poor packaging. The basket arrives in two pieces which seat together, held by the nameplate. Two of the female receiver ports on one half were smooshed which didn't allow mating with the male plugs. Using handtools, I reshaped the ports and salvaged the unit. Being so easy to manipulate, I am forced question the integrity of the steel tubing...
3) The item did not arrive with all required hardware. One of the three long bolts which attach the receiver bar to the basket was missing. That can be easily resolved with a trip to the local hardware store. More worrisome, however, is the missing cotter pin for the included hitch pin. While this is a non-issue for me, someone may be relying on that item which is lacking a key safety requirement. Hopefully, users know what they need to safely attach equipment to their hitch but I wouldn't count on it. Regardless, do yourself a favor, all, and get a locking hitch pin.
4) The tack welds on the basket/frame do not instill much confidence. While I'm not an expert on the subject of welding, I do recognize quality engineering when I see it; this is not quality engineering. This wouldn't pass my QA and I don't expect them to hold up very long under load while exposed to road vibrations and shocks.
The Ugly:
1) The basket and railings arrived scratched, rusted, and slightly bent in various places.
2) The basket itself does not sit level in my hitch. I believe one side is slightly heavier but I do not believe this to be the cause. I weighed down the opposite side attempting to level the basket to no avail. Hopefully this will prove to be a cosmetic annoyance rather than a functional or safety concern.
The Bottom Line:
After some harsh but justifiable criticism, I would still recommend this basket to the Amazonian looking for a cheap solution to an overcrowded vehicle but only if said shopper, like me, either: 1) can get this at a significant discount or 2) just doesn't care enough to invest any more for a steel basket towed behind my car.
I got what I paid for...

tow rack, July 20, 2011
By Keith T

Item was easy to assemble and did well on our trip from VA to Orlando and back. Get a big tarp (at least 8 x 10) and good ratcheting straps and use a second person to put it on the vehicle. I would give it five stars but already rusting in spots after one trip. Nothing a can of rustoleum can't fix though This is a nice product, not cheaply built and fits pretty snug in the tow bar.

Tough, Sturdy and easy to install, July 8, 2011
By DPalz
|
|
Purchased this to make a 12 hr family summer vacation road trip easier and boy did it! Installed on a 2010 Chrysler Town & Country w/ Class 3 trailer hitch. Recieved in excellent shape and in 1 business day (Amazon Plus member). Took only 30 mins to assemble and install. After installed I stood on the rack at every point possible with little or no give noticed (I weigh 250lb plus). Dressed up and increased visibility by placing $5 in nice reflectors (comes with basic red reflector tape) and it looks great. Was considering a roof cargo carrier but could not beat the price and ease of use/access this thing affords. With luggage & cooler on rack the rear door easily cleared to open and license plate was not obstructed (back up camera still had visiblity as well!). Installed with the tongue at lower setting. Did scrape bottom a few times when I went over a speed bump too fast. So what!?! Recommend good tie down straps, water proof tarp and cargo net as they kept everything dry and tightly in place.

Valley 90590 Deluxe Hitch Cargo Basket..., April 1, 2011
By Cigar Sherlock
|
|
I received this cargo hitch two days ago with free shipping. I put it together today and had to comment on here for anyone thinking about a purchase. I am happy with the overall design of the basket and it fits well onto the back of my 09 Highlander (hatch opens). However, when taking the item out of the box, the first instruction is to fit the two large sides together by fitting the rails into one another. Well one of the bars was slightly bent and it took some decent muscle, along with a few hammer strikes to get these two pieces together. I'm not faulting Valley necessarily, it looks like someone probably put this box on the bottom of something heavy. The rails were not sparkling clean, with scuff marks on them in several places. The whole package just looks really old. Other than the slight fitment problem, the rest of the construction was relatively easy. I'm giving this product 3 stars, as it just wasn't perfect out of the box.

seems like an OK luggage carrier, January 25, 2011
By Alicia L Chandler (Erie, PA)
|
|
It was as good as it was going to get. So the first thing I've noticed is that the finish isn't great.
I do believe it will hold our luggage as we are planning. I wouldn't use it for daily construction usage, but to carry the luggage behind our minivan, it should be just fine.
Even though it says many people bought a hitch pin it came with one. So now we have a spare since we just bought a cheap one since we didn't think it came with one.
I gave it 4 stars because I knew by the price that it wasn't going to be top of the line, but it should work for what we wanted just fine, which is to carry our luggage a couple times a year.

Cargo Basket, January 6, 2011
By TK (TX)
|
|
Just got this cargo basket before Christmas 2010. Easy to assemble and mount to auto hitch. It is sturdy and held the large Rolo cargo bag easily, with some room on the sides to spare. Only drawback is that it has only one hitch pin hole so you cannot adjust mounting depth unless your car hitch has more than one pin hole.

All of our suitcases plus 2 small coolers fit easily. We highly recommend this product. We also suggest the carrier bag as well to accompany the carrier. The price was reasonable too.

Missing Hardware!, May 25, 2010
By Kristi Casey (Snellville, GA)
|
|
I ordered this item to use on my vacation. I received it 3 weeks prior to leaving and because I had read some other reviews about missing parts I opened it right away to chack for missing parts. All of the hardware was missing. I went to the companies website and sent an e-mail to customer service about my missing parts to see if they could send them to me. No responce. So I called customer service after a couple of days and talked to someone. They told me they would send the parts out right away and it would take about a week to get them. I still had 2.5 weeks so that was fine. A week and a half later I called back to see where my parts were. She said they were mailed out 4 days ago and to give it 3 more days. This was still ok because I had a week before we were leaving. I gave it 4 days and still no parts. Called back and was told they were mailed out 4 days ago and to give it 3 more days. We were leaving for vacation in 4 days and never got out parts before we left. We went to the hardware store with the parts list and bought our oun parts. When we go back from vacation our parts were waiting on us! Every phone call and e-mail I sent them I told them the day I was going on vacation and that I needed the hardware to put this together BEFORE I left. So we love our cargo basket but Valley's customer service gave us the run around on the missing parts and that is why they only get 3 stars. I would sill recomend this product but allow for plenty of time for you are planning on using it.

A cargo basket that can hold my biggest cooler, April 25, 2010
By fishing fanatic (NYC New York)
|
|
I bought the valley 90590 to make room in my tahoe as well as keeping stinky stuff outside. I holds the biggest cooler Costco sells . Well made and doesn't rattle,I did add some reflective tape. The one thing it didn't have was a lic. plate holder so I picked up a universal for 5 bucks and hose clamped it to the back! I don't know if it was a summons or not hiding the rear plate or want to be pulled over for any reason. It was set back far enough to open my rear hatch completely with the cooler on it as well as enough room to stand between the carrier and the hatch to get everything inside. They shipped it fast and bolted together easily. I have used it for two 250 mile fishing trips and give it a big thumbs up. My cheap ratchet strap J hooks fit thru the mesh and hook on the crossbar soI can tie down anywhere on the carrier. Another idea I had was to put a spare strap hooked to the roof rack and the strap end going in the cooler. Now when I back up I see the strap and remember I have a cargo carrier behind me.Amazon rules I am very satisfied.

Best Rack on the market, April 5, 2010
By C. Thornton
|
|
This rack by Valley was everything I hoped it would be. It was easy to assemble (less than 10 minutes) and it is HUGE. I love the amount of space it offers. When I camp I can set my Congo Tough Box on it as well as my oversized cooler and other gear. For the price, it blows the competition away. I will be using this rack on my Jeep Wrangler as well as My Tahoe. I wanted a rack for my Jeep that would clear my oversized spare tire and this one does it. However, it has to be in the low mount position to open the tailgate and that is ok because I have plenty of ground clearance.

Great design, March 16, 2010
By Andrea Momma to 5 (Austin, TX)

The basket assembled in minutes and was very easy to mount. I did it by myself with no problems. Unit is very sturdy and easily accommodated 4 large suitcases. The design allows the basket to be applied in different ways to best suit your vehicle. We were able to open the lift on our Expedition and load and unload without having to remove the basket or the luggage. Great buy.

Solid product at a good price, January 17, 2010
By D. Peterson (Ashland, VA United States)
|
|
This item ships as three major pieces: two halves and the main bar. It assembled easily and is heavy duty construction with an attractive high gloss black finish. The option to flip the main bar to have the basket several inches higher up (as pictured) is nice because my Explorer's hitch ball mount has a 4" drop for my small trailer, so I'm starting from a low position and would like to raise to protect better from road spray. It's a fairly heavy item but most adults shouldn't have trouble mounting themselves. I'd rather have heavy and solid than flimsy.

Great product, October 6, 2009
By T. Hanson (Clinton, Utah United States)

|
This cargo carrier worked great for our family vacation this summer. We were able to put two large hardside suitcases, two carry ons and a childs 4 wheel scooter/ride on in it and still had room for more stuff. We did use the cargo bag that is a recommended item for the suitcases, see my review for that. I do recommend buying a Valley Silent hitch pin for it. We used the carrier on our 2000 Dodge Durango and before the Silent hitch pin it did wabble and move a bit (with the included pin), but with the silent hitch pin it was a snug tight fit. We loved this and can't wait to use it again.

Better than we hoped!, April 8, 2009

We needed the extra storage for our Durango and looked at a few hitch carriers before we decided on this one. We especially liked the "basket" style of this model and the good feedback left by others. After our first trip with it, I can't figure out how we took trips without it! I suggest getting the Rola cargo bag to go with it though, as it provided a more secure place to store belongings.

I've used this about five times since I purchased it. I was really worried about the ruggedness based on some reviews, but it seems stouter than I anticipated. I was worried that it would be a hindrance on some of the rough trails I travel, but so far, it has performed just fine. I haven't loaded it up to max yet, but it has done very well with the loads I've placed on it. I did haul a large load of wood on it on one trip. I bought some ratchet straps, and it did just fine. I think it's worth the money I paid for it and more.

Cargo basket, October 5, 2011
By Stan

I needed to transport a couple of bulky living room chairs from South Dakota to Texas. The Valley hitch mount cargo basket worked very well.It came with instruction for assembly but the shipping box was torn and I was concerned some of the parts might be missing. Everything was secured within via plastic bag and tape but did not have a warm feeling initially upon seeing the shipping carton. I was also concerned about noise (rattles) while traveling but not a sound. I will be using this product to transport large bulky (not heavy) items again.

Great Cargo Basket, June 21, 2011
By Angelica (Colorado, USA)
|
|
Worked out great for camping. We were looking for something to give us more cargo space on our 2007 Toyota RAV4 and this seemed to be the way to go. When I received the basket I was a little worried that it would bottom out do to the fact that it sticks out about two feet from the car. After assembly, I noticed that everything seemed sturdy and capable of holding plenty of cargo. With the added weight our RAV4 road lower. The Toyota is the Sport so there was no tow package. We bottomed out once but it was the hitch that hit the ground. I will solve this with some air assist bladders which will keep the suspension rigid when fully loaded. Just to let you know what I carried on our trip, one large Cooler with wheels, and six bundles of wood. I was surprised that this all fit with the help of strap downs and the great rail design. This only received 4 star from me because the rails are not solid, they are hallow which makes them flex a little when strapping down. No big draw backs, works great on lower SUV or crossovers. Worth the money

It worked well. Assembled easily. The shaft needed a little padding to avoid rattle when traveling over bumps. Duct tape to the rescue!
I would like to have had bolt caps for the ends. I'd put them on the inside of the basket and made small holes in the carrier bag. I've learned to be careful now when taking the bag in and out of the basket while loaded. It was great to have convenient storage space while traveling.

Need more cargo space? This is the answer., December 13, 2009
By Jennifer (Jacksonville, NC)
|
|
We bought this for a Toyota Highlander, as we needed just a bit more cargo space to haul all the baby and dog stuff needed for a long weekend.
The box arrived looking a little worse for the wear, but everything inside was okay and we had all the pieces. It went together in about a half hour with a handful of bolts and screws and easily attached to the hitch.
It sits below the bumper so we had no problems opening the rear hatch with the hitch installed. That said, it does take a little bit of finagling to either lean way over or get between the car and the hitch to retrieve things.
We packed our [previously-owned] soft car-top carrier and then used ratcheting tie-downs to secure it. Upon reaching our destination, my husband easily removed it and stored it in the garage, then reinstalled it for the trip home. Everything survived a wintry-weather eight-hour round trip on the highways and backwoods of Northern Michigan.
We would recommend this hitch to anyone.

This cargo carrier is just what I needed, November 3, 2009
By K Hoy (Plymouth, New Hampshire United States)

I drive an SUV and needed a way to get smelly tall garbage cans to the dump every ten days or so. The unit is well made and at less than a hundred bucks along with free shipping made it a done deal for me. Very happy with the deal.

Carrier, October 17, 2009
By Rick (PA)

Some paint was a little rubbed, very heavy and hard
for factory to pack "right" to get it here "perfect"...
Not a problem. The painted logo looked "cheap".

great shelf, October 9, 2009
By L. Lynch (WI)

I've used this now a number of times: easy to set up, not too heavy, does the job. I'm able to use this and still open my back hatch with gear loaded! I was a little dismayed to see it came in three pieces and not the two stated in the description, but all in all, a good shelf for the money.

Valley Deluxe carrier - Jeep Wrangler, September 28, 2009
By Jeepinjehosifats (StL, MO)

Received product quickly. Box was beat up but contents were fine. Goes together quickly and is sturdy enough to carry my hunting supplies, coolers, etc... I wish it had a bit more bend on it or the bend was adjustable,so it sits level. When I slide it in my hitch, it has quite a bit of play. I'll wind up threading the hitch so I can hold the carrier secure from the bottom and hopefully take out some of the 'droop'. Tilting my hitch upwards is not an option on my bumper. [...]

Excellent Purchase!, December 27, 2011

I purchased the Valley 90590 Deluxe Hitch Mount Cargo Basket so my dog could ride in comfort in the back of my Commander. Definitely a great investment. The overall quality of the product is decent, it is not top of the line, but it is a good purchase for the price and I will get a lot of use out of this item. I also puchased the Rola 59102 Expandable Hitch Tray Cargo Bag which I was very pleased with. Plenty of room to add a cooler or a tub for additional capacity if necessary. Both items made it from Denver to Des Moines and back without issue. The hitch cargo basket is a must for large pet owners!

Great cargo basket but missing parts!, December 20, 2011
By David

|
Received the cargo basket by Fedex which left the box at my doorsteep. It comes disassembled and required some installation but nothing too complicated. I did notice a small tear in the box on the back and could hear parts swirling within the box but thought that would be ok. Once I opened it, I noticed that all the nuts and bolts were loose. They did not come in a plastic bag. The item did not look like it was open before since it was taped like it came from the manufacturer. I noticed that I was missing 4 bolts including the washers. Had to go to Home Depot to purchase them since we where ready to use the item.
I called customer service to address this. They wanted to send me another one where I could take the necessary parts out and ship it back. First I really did not
want to deal with that since it's large and very heavy. Second it would require me to call to get it picked up when we were leaving on a trip. I was hoping they would discount a few dollars since I went to buy new bolts but I was told they could not do that. I guess it would be everyone else doing it but consider sending me a new one and sending it back. That shipping cost money.
Now I know how the parts where loose in the box, possible one of those returned units that someone else was missing parts. Overall I'm satisified with the product. I was able to get it in Amazon deals otherwise if paid full price, I might have returned it because of the missing parts.

Great Basket, December 17, 2011
By Fatboyjoe1

The Valley 90590 works just fine on my wrangler. Howver, I do run 35 inch Mickey Thompsons with a full spare mounted to an after market Warn Bumper and Tire Swing. That being said, no matter how you mount/assemble the basket, the tire carrier will not swing open past the basket. So everything needs to be put in the back of my jeep and packed away before putting the basket on. Stock tires will not be a problem on a jeep for those of you looking into this product.
It really isnt that big of a deal considering the quality of the product and the price it will cost you. It is sturdy and can easily handly 100lbs. without any issues.
I've had other baskets before and this is by far the best constructed Cargo Basket i've owned. No problems and i'd definately say give it a try.

Poorly constructed, December 14, 2011
By Rachelaine

I bought this intending on using it for the little bit of extra space I need for a long trip. Terrible idea. I got the box today and it looked like it had already been shipped to 3 different people (and maybe it had been) and returned. I opened it and sure enough, no instructions, half of the pins were out of the plastic bag they come in and rattling around in the box. Still, it looked easy enough to put together, so I went for it, however one of the pins was bent and you could not make the thing go together. Maybe if I had hammered away at it, I could have gotten it to work, however it looked like someone else had already tried that unsuccessfully. Also, the metal was detached at one of the points where the grid meets the sides. Not a huge deal since it isn't a structural piece, but given the rest of the issues with this thing, very disappointed overall both in the quality of the construction and in Amazon for shipping something to me that has clearly been returned by other people before. Others have spoken of Valley's excellent customer service, wish I could comment, but without an instruction manual, and not being able to find them on the web, I had no one to contact except Amazon, which I did only to request a return pick up.

This is perfect for my Jeep Wragler...., October 24, 2011
By STP

The price was great. It looks great on the back of my 97 jeep. Now I can have 2 friends ride with us to the beach. Load the gear in the rack and we are off. It will hold up to 200 lbs. I can not tell in diffence in the operation of the Wrangler. Exhaust heat is not an issue. I actually drove for an 1.5 hours with 3 cheap plastic containers strapped on the back and they were not even warm from the exhaust. It is high enough that it will not drag entering parking lots or inclines. And spare tire clearance is not an issue.....I thought it might be so...... Get it!!!!!

Easy Assembly, October 5, 2011
By Lacnibor

Just assembled my cargo basket. It was one of the simplest items I have ever assembled! It took me mo more than twenty minutes and would have been less if I hadn't gotten over zealous and tightened the plates all the way before putting the bar on (why would I read the instructions first, I'm a man). I am using this on my 2010 Honda Pilot.
My only complaint thus far is that the hitch pin should be a bit longer to facilitate ease of securing the safety pin. It's a tight fit. I have a spare from other hitches that I can use.
I agree with other reviews about the paint not holding up so well.
Will update after my trip for practicality and ease of use.
