2.0 out of 5 stars.  Save your money..., September 3, 2006
By Tony Clifton (Greensboro, NC)
I purchased this bike rack because I was moving out of state and didn't have enough room in the back of my car for the bike.
I also needed a rack to transport my bike to local trails, parks, etc. So, I went with Schwinn given the brand name and that it was relatively inexpensive.

I drove from NC to Fla, approx 700 miles, bad idea with this rack. I didn't have any trouble assembling the rack, only took about 5 minutes and was ready to go. However, during my trip, I had to pull over on the side of the interstate no less than 5 times to tighten the straps back. The buckles do NOT hold the straps in place. This is a real problem if you are travelling on a highway (or any busy road) and you have to worry about your bike flying off the back into oncoming traffic. Also, even if the buckles hold, The wind drag from the bike starts to pull the brackets right off of the rack frame. I had to purchase 4 bungee cords and rope in order to secure my bike from flying off the back (and yes, the rack was assembled correctly). Bottom line, this rack is probably a great value if don't plan on driving more than a a few miles or over 40-50mph, otherwise, it is a a complete waste.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good for me, August 12, 2008
By Renegade (Idaho USA)
Bought this at Target for $40. Opened the box and found a vehicle compatibility guide and a referral to saris website. It seems to be the same as the Saris Sentinel 2 bike. I was a little concerned since I had never used a rack before and this one did not have side straps, just top and bottom. Instructions say to check it in 30 miles and then every 200. Took it 1250 miles from Omaha to Boise using a Pontiac Vibe with one bike on it. Never had to tighten a strap. Very happy with it for only $40. 4 stars because I don't know if having two bikes on it would have a negative effect.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Serves it's purpose, January 31, 2006
By Matt (Boulder, Colorado)
You get what you pay for in this bike rack, it is certainly stable enough to transport a bike some distance. Installing and removing is rather easy, but the instructions leave a little to be desired. In the end, it is worth the 40 dollars if you hope to transport your bike to your favorite spots in state.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Great if you're taking it to a local trail, January 2, 2007
By Jacob S. Kotlicky (Florida United States)
I bought the Schwinn Ranger bike and this rack. I didn't make it more than 10 miles from my place and the bike started slipping off. The straps don't hold anything but a standard bike in the brackets. I had to put the bike in my car in order to be able to make it to my destination. I had known Schwinn to make quality products, but am sadly disappointed with this rack.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Not good, June 21, 2009
By kitty treats (Orlando, FL)
I bought this because it was Schwinn, and it was simply name recognition. Once the straps are tightened, the tension buckles do not remain so, and over time the straps will come loose from the car if left to their own devices. The straps must have too much play in them for the Florida weather because they don't stay tight on the car. Also not taken into account are the J hooks meant to keep the unit mounted/stabilized to the bottom of the trunk. They are not long enough to grip the trunk itself, instead hooking the plastic panel covering the trunk on my Saturn, warping it when the carrier is tightened. In addition, the straps that wrap around a bike's top tube and affix it to the rack are made of a flimsy plastic which has a tendency to come unsnapped as the bikes sway. This rack was purchased from my local Target store.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Don't Waste Your Time., September 24, 2008
By Cara Schade
I would give this no stars if possible. Held the bikes fine, but the rack did not stay on the car. We had to pull over several times to tighten the straps. Eventually, we got SO frustrated that we took the bikes off the rack, took the wheels off and put them in the car! HUGE waste of time and money. Do not buy this product!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN!, August 10, 2009
By ianochaye (Nottingham UK)
This rack by Schwinn is low cost and simple. It is also a potential disaster with deadly flaws!

The rack is easy to fit to a "compatible listed" saloon like mine, even if the printed instructions can be a bit confusing.

The rack's workings are based on having two sets of rubber feet resting on the top and rear of the outside of the car's trunk lid. The carrier is then held in place by two sets of 2 tensioning straps which clip over the top and bottom of the trunk lid. The bike(s) are then held in place in a cradle by two plastic "bangles" which are punched with holes which "pop" over four buttons on the other side of the strap.

Easy and simple! And so it seems. A bit of huffing and puffing to make sure the straps are really tight (and tying knots to keep them secure after running the straps through the buckles three times), and a bit of concern about the reliability of the plastic "bangles" and it is time to fit on a bike (in our case we tried only one first thank goodness).

Off we drove - and within a couple of miles the problems became apparent as I saw in my rear-view mirror the two lower straps flapping in the wind - detached. On pulling over I found that the two lower clips had indeed slipped off the bottom of my trunk lid and that the top ones were on their way to being loose as well. At which point of course the whole theory - and the rack with your bike - collapses in front of moving traffic if you haven't been quick enough to spot what is happening.

Enough sarcasm! The flaws are as follows:

(1) No matter how tight you manage to get the straps - and how securely you fasten them in the buckles - the weight of the bike when you drive over a bump in the road forces the whole rack down by the fractions of an inch necessary to allow the clips to start slipping off the bottom of your trunk lid. A few bumps and they are off. In our case it took around 4 miles on an urban road at less than 40 mph. The tensioning in the straps necessary to avoid this just cannot be applied by (most) human efforts.

(2) Once the bottom straps are loose there is more than enough "play" for the top ones to bounce out over a few miles too. There will be no downward pull to stop them coming free - at which point the rack ((with bike) falls off the car in front of following traffic.

(3) Those plastic loops or "bangles" holding the bikes do not look too secure either. We tied our bike down with twine as well to try to be safe.

Bear in mind we only loaded 1 bike. With 2 on the rack the problem mentioned in (1) above would be much worse as the downward thrust on a bump in the road would be that much more because of the additional weight.

In this case "cheap" is far from "cheerful". BE VERY VERY WARY OF THIS PRODUCT - which I honestly think Schwinn (and Target in our case) should withdraw.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  DO NOT BUY THIS RACK, August 13, 2009

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice Rack, November 2, 2010
By AlphabetiGAL (Redmond, WA)
I purchased this bike rack a few days before a cross-country trip from Wisconsin to Washington State; after reading the reviews here, I was worried that I might have made A Terrible Mistake, but had little other choice than to use it.

It took some time for us to figure out how to assemble the bike rack; the back window of my Pathfinder wouldn't close entirely with the straps tightened, so we closed the window when it was loose, then tightened it while it was closed. Worked like a charm. Because I was going to be stopping overnight quite a few times, I tied my bike chain around the bike and also around the bars of the rack. Just to be on the safe side, I also used a bungee cord to further secure the bicycle onto the rack. We followed the directions for securing the bike to the rack perfectly, fastening and knotting the straps exactly as instructed. The rack itself was very stable, and moved only a little under the pressure of my weight.

I did--as the instructions stated--stop every 200 miles (usually for food or to fuel up) to check the security of the straps, but never once had to actually tighten them.

In the end--with a few detours here and there to see friends--the bike rack carried my women's bicycle almost 2,500 miles. We surmounted the winds of Wyoming, the snow of Utah, the vast nothing of Iowa. We crossed the mountains of Oregon and Colorado. We even survived driving through Minnesota with a Green Bay decal the day after they defeated the Vikings (no easy feat, that!). Though I was initially worried after reading the reviews here, after driving 2,500 miles with this rack through various different terrain and weather conditions, I realized that my worries were completely unjustified; the bike rack worked as described, and performed better than I ever expected it to.

I highly recommend this bike rack.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Low price, works only for driving slowly, August 7, 2007
By ski fan (California United States)
This rack is a little disappointment for me. It easy to setup but it really designed for toys bikes that has no weight. With adult full size bikes, it has no way to hold when car is driving on regular car speed. First of all, they should have six straps that can hold the rack steady and this rack only has 4. Second, straps are easy to get loose. Third, the brakets that hold the bicycle are no way to tight up. They use 4 plastic botton and 4 holes on the plastic strap to connect in order to hold the bicycles, which is too week and very easy to just open the connection when the car moves fast.

To make use of this rack, you have to use some other assistant. I bought a basket of bangee cords and use them tight up bike with rack.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Straps come loose!!, May 17, 2009
By Steve (Milwaukee WI United States)
I purchased this rack to use on a Ford Escape. I mounted the rack and tightened the straps a tight as possible. After a brief drive the lower straps came completely off. I retightened them and continued. They came off again. They then came off a third time. I then went home dropped off my bikes, went to a bike store and bought a real bike rack. Don't trust your bikes to this rack!!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Product, April 28, 2009
By WillnOhio (Columbus, Ohio USA)
I purchased this item from Target and after coming home and reading the majority of reviews posted here, I was skeptical about even attempting to use it. However, I did and I did not have any problems at all. I did have to use my caveman skills to "read" the picture instructions, but once figured out is oh so simple. I mounted two 26" bikes - one with a straight frame and an angled frame. Tips: Note that the angled frame will sit awkward on the rack, but that is normal. Also, be sure to knot the straps near the buckles once you have secured the rack to the trunk - this will prevent any loosening of the straps.
My only complaint is that the product appears to be cheaply made and lacking that extra security one would assume to have with such a product. I would be weary of distant traveling, but I can also doctor it up to make it work! All-in-all... good product and reasonably priced.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent value for the money., April 27, 2009
By Dan Faloon (Wilmington, OH United States)
I have been contemplating purchasing a trunk bike rack for some time but I couldn't afford to spend a great deal of money. When I received this rack, I was amazed as to how easy it was to mount on my Accord and how versatile the mounting posts were. I have an old '72 Huffy Scout and my wife has an even older middle weight Schwinn girl's bike. I was able to easily adjust the posts to accommodate both with no problems or special bars for the girl's bike. If I can fit these antiques on this rack, I'm sure it will handle almost anything.

My intention was to get this rack just to see if I liked the idea and purchase a more expensive "better" one if things worked out. I think now that I'll just keep this one and save the money!

I would not recommend using this rack if you are going long distances at high speeds but for what I intend to use it for, it's just fine.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Lost 0ver $600 in bikes, August 7, 2009
By Roy E. Frady (Lakewood, WA United States)
I would give this rack negative numbers if possible. I mounted the rack on my car and attached it to my RV. We went 40 miles down the road and when we stopped for gas, the bikes and rack were gone. It had fallen off in traffic on the interstate. I lost over $600 inbikes plus the rack. DO NOT TRUST THIS RACK!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Waste of Your $$$$, November 29, 2010
By Alex (Brooklyn, NY)
We decided to buy it because it was the most affordable bike carrier on this site but it is not worth the money or the effort setting it up.
First of all the so call "instruction manual" was simply a few fuzzy pictures along with some short captions instead of detail steps.
Second the structure lacks stability and it is out of cheap parts such as: Flimsy plastic straps meant to secure a 50 pound bike, nylon straps that can not prevent a bike from moving out of the holder, plastic holder that will move at sudden movements.
And sadly after all this effort of configuring the 2 bike carrier we came to the conclusion that only ONE of our bikes can fit.
Despite what the "instruction manual" told us the carrier can NOT hold women's bikes or ones that are over the speed bike's category (more than 25 pounds).

It is obvious to say that we will be returning this product tomorrow.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Didn't fit my car despite fitting guide saying it should, April 21, 2009
By J. Wirrell (Sacramento, CA USA)
I bought this rack at Target after checking the vehicle compatability guide, which said that it would fit my 1999 Buick Regal (special instructions to attach straps under the plastic bumper to the frame). When I tried to install the rack, the straps were not long enough to attach to the frame. Luckily I was able to return it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Not too shabby, August 25, 2008
By clovercat (Eugene, OR United States)
This rack was $40 from Target, so I can't complain. The directions were terrible, but I figured it out on my own. I had to stop after 10 minutes because my bike was bouncing around. I adjusted the bike and put it in a different position, as the rack is made for a man's bike and mine is a woman's. After that, it worked great! It didn' sway or bounce around, didn't damage my car, and lasted for 4 hours on a windy coast road to and from.
Felt safe with it on. You may have to ajust it for your own bike, but it works fine. I couldn't complain since it was $40 dollars and worked fine.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Do not buy, May 21, 2007
By M. Frantz
I wouldn't give this one star if I had that choice. We bought this carrier when we bought new bikes. We installed it correctly and after driving only a few miles the straps holding one of the bikes detached and dropped my brand new $1200 bike to the ground. Buy this only if you do not care if your bikes fly off.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Lousy product, April 7, 2007
By R. Jeudi (TX, USA)
Pros: Quick Setup (less than 5 minutes)
Cons: Bike sways widely even at low speeds. I took the highway with it once and had to drive with my hazard lights on to minimize the chance of killing someone if the bike did fly off. As if that was not bad enough, the bottom straps tend to come completely loose when driving on bumpy roads (there's no way to tighten and secure the bloody things).

This bike rack is OK.... It was one of the cheapest ones I could find so can't complain that it is only OK, but it is unquestionably only OK... Not great.... Just OK. If I had to do it over again, I might spend a bit more and get something a bit less clunkly and cheap... but, it works and the price was right.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  So-so, July 17, 2011
By Elaise
I bought this rack from Target without doing any research on it, primarily because this was the only 2-bike trunk rack Target had in stock and it was more convenient to go there than to Wal-Mart, who seems to only stock Bell brand racks. I will also say that I have 3 challenges in finding a bike rack: my car is (1)a hatchback with (2)a spoiler and (3)my bike is a mountain bike and therefore relatively heavy.

Setting up was fairly straightforward, though the included instructions do leave a bit to be desired. My car was listed as compatible, though it was suggested I get longer (I think it was) S-straps, presumably so the rack could hook onto my car at the seam near the roof where the hatchback opens. It was when I came online to look for these straps that I found all the poor reviews here on Amazon. As the main reason I was getting a bike rack in the first place was so I could transport my bike for a cross-country move, I was discouraged by the number of reviews that didn't have optimism for its stability on long-distance, high-speed trips... nervous enough that I've now returned the rack to Target.

I only used this Schwinn rack once for a very short trip up the interstate to a park. My bike stayed on the rack, and indeed seemed fairly stable on the return trip when I switched which direction my bike was pointing. However, like many others here, I noticed the bottom straps that clip under the bottom edge of the trunk (towards the license plate) to not be very stable. When pulling out from a gas station, I hit a bump in the pavement at a low speed that was still enough to shift them. When I would be putting the rack on the car, even, they'd come easily unhooked, no matter how much I tugged at them. (And yes, I did loop the strap back through the third slot in the clasp as depicted in the manual after tightening.)

Perhaps it would have been fine; perhaps not. However, waiting to see if my bike goes flying off on an interstate, miles away from home, into traffic is not a test I wanted to put the rack through.

I haven't tested the Bell rack I purchased yet, but I used a borrowed one to transport my bike the first time and it made the trip from Texas to New York just fine (save for a little paint rubbed off my spoiler). The two frames have similar construction, but the Bell rack has velcro straps to wrap onto the bike frame whereas the Schwinn has weird plastic straps whose holes clip onto 4 pegs. Disclaimer: For both racks, when I used them, I had the rear straps hooked to the sides of my trunk, which I'm sure is less stable than if I'd been able to attach them near the hatchback hinge. Like I said, I had no big problems with either, BUT in light of the reviews here, I have decided to stick with the brand I've already successfully tested.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for ONE Bike, July 14, 2011
By JJB (Grand Rapids, MI)
I purchased this rack for my Mazda3 hoping to transport 2 bikes at a time. Problem 1, my car has a spoiler. As I travel with it, the rack shifts a little and ends up rubbing against the spoiler, which obviously isn't good for the paint. Problem 2, two adult bikes will NOT fit on this rack. 1 adult bike and 1 kids bike might work, but definitely not 2 adult size bikes. Total fail with this purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  2 Bike Trunk Rack, September 28, 2010

I ride my back bike home from work every night because I work second shift and my fiancee works first. After days of shoving my bike in the trunk of the car and watching bang up and down even after tieing it down I decided to price a trunk rack for my sunfire. I bought this one and for what it is, it works great and the price was fair.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Very disappointed in Schwinn bike rack, July 29, 2010
By eliz
I am very disappointed in the Schwinn trunk bike rack. I bought it at Target for $40 and thought it was a brand name I could trust. The straps do not stay tight at all...and they are thin and flimsy (not something you would want to rely on holding your bikes on the car with). Our 2002 Subaru Forester was listed in the vehicle compatibility chart - but should be removed. The rack does not fit securely on a hatchback - the bars press onto the back window. When my husband tried to get the straps to tighten properly, our rear window shattered from the pressure of the rack. Overall, this product is a piece of crap.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Decent Product for the Price, May 20, 2009
By Simon
Issues:

-The plastic clamps used to lock the bike in place don't really seem to hold as well as they should. I used the extra give from the nylon straps of the hooks to tie my bike(s) to the rack. At least this means that the bike is attached in 4 places (for me) instead of 2.

-The metal hooks could be shaped a little better. There's a tendency for them to come unhooked (yikes!) during the drive, especially the lower hooks. In order to fix for the lower hooks, I latched them to an opening inside of my trunk and just closed the trunk on the straps.

With those fixes, it seems to work fairly well. I've even taken it on the freeway like this and haven't had to worry about it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  One Satisfied Customer..., April 4, 2007

I got this to lug my bike around Danville, VA and it worked just fine. But the acid test came when I used it to move my bicycle 500 miles from Danville to central Jersey. Though the 'grips' jostled around a bit when I hit some bridge seams on my way through 'Pennsyltucky' along I-78, the bike stayed secured the entire trip. Well worth the meager investment!

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Flimsy, April 4, 2012
By craig
I picked this rack up at Target for $50. Setup is easy enough. But the buckles to tighten the strap are flimsy and don't seem to stay tight for very long. Also the plastic straps that hold the bike are poorly designed. I'm taking it back to Target when I'm done writing this. Don't waste your money. Spend a little more and get something you won't need to worry about.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Keep looking!!!, April 1, 2012
By rhondalivingston@hotmail.com (West Virginia)
Please save yourself the time and money and look elsewhere. Setup was quite easy though there were no instrutions in the box. The rack attatched easily enough to the car however, that is where the downside started. The wraps to go around the frame to hold it in place would not stay snapped. I ended up using a couple small bungee cords to strap it down.

The next downside was that the buckles did NOT hold the straps taunt. The buckles did not have any teeth to prevent the tension from backing off. With this, I ended up knotting the straps so there was minimal play in them. With that said, I still ended up stopping frequently to tighten the straps.

Being the Swhwinn name, I believed I would have a better product.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Last Minute Purchase, January 23, 2012
By Felicia M McBride (Dolton, IL United States)
We picked up this rack at the last minute when my son decided he wanted to take his bike on vacation with us.I ran around to several stores and could only find this rack for mounting on the trunk/back hatch of a car. We bought this at Target for about $40. After going over the instructions we mounted it to our 2008 Jeep Compass. You have to make sure that you tighten is down well and follow the directions for tying off the straps (My hubby tightened it down as best he could and then I tied an extra knot in each strap because it made me feel like it was more secure). We were a little nervous about the straps that actually hold the bike since they are just plastic that loops around and sort of snaps into itself, but the bike stayed really secure (and my son's bike is one of those newer style frames, the frame is much thicker then the bikes I had as a kid). Now the instructions tell you to check the rack after a few miles, to make sure it's still tight and doesn't shift around, then you're supposed to check it every 200 miles or so as needed) We drove from IL to NJ and back again with it (the speed limit was 65-70 mph most of the way) We checked the rack and bike each time we stopped for gas after the initial check (the one after a few miles)and the rack and bike never budge. I watched it like a hawk in the rear view and side mirrors. We haven't tried putting two bikes on it yet but it did really well with the one, and for the cost of the rack I'd say it was a pretty good buy. We plan to try it out with 2 bikes this summer, I'll try to remember to update this with how that works out.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Enough, December 30, 2011

I've had this a little over a year now and I use it for trails and parks in my state. It is really easy to put together and on the car, the only problem I have encountered would be the straps that you mount the rack onto the car with, I have had them come loose multiple times! I have even had other people tie them just in case I was doing it wrong, but they still come loose which can be a bit nerve racking if you take the highway.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  One of the best, October 14, 2011

I have a Mazda 3 year 2006, my car wasn't on the list of cars that the rack is design for, but it works better than I expected. The only problem that I have with it is that here in Puerto Rico the roads suck, and it makes me paranoid every time I hit a hole, my eyes quickly look to the rack so I know it hasn't fallen. I guess that's puerto Rico's problem, not the mount rack, lol. Now, don't leave it on the car after you have taken the bike, put the rack inside the trunk, this mount rack has stripes that can be easily cut. Other than this is perfect and for a good price. By the way, after I bought it here I saw it on Kmart and for less bucks, so go check it out there first if you plan on buying it.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Schwinn bike rack, October 11, 2011
By Shannon Piner
This product is sufficient for the cost. Nothing too fancy, nothing too terrible. Would recommend locking the frame in, instead of relying on the plastic straps to hold tight.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  PIECE OF JUNK, August 4, 2011
By Gregory B. Stevens (Townsend, MA USA)
Bought this for my husband's birthday. He took it on vacation with two bikes. It took the paint of the trunk of the car and the straps would not hold the bikes in place. At the end of the week, he had to throw the rack away because it was falling apart. I thought with the Schwinn name it would be well made, but I was wrong.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Decent Product for the Price, May 20, 2009
