Great price for a decent bike helmet, November 8, 2005
By Jesse D. Walker (Logan, UT)
|
|
I needed a bike helmet. This one was hard to pass up for this price. It's made by Bell, a well-known manufacturer. The helmet is rather simple. What you would get by spending more money on a different helmet would be one that was slightly lighter, with more air vents and a fancier strap adjusting mechanism. This helmet came with the visor (not yet attached, so you can put it on or not), three pieces of extra padding (thicker than the padding that comes installed in case you want to switch), and a generic instruction manual (written for all Bell helmets, not just this one). Anyway, it looks decent, and will protect its wearer in case of a crash as well as any other helmet.

GREAT PRODUCT FOR THE MONEY., February 9, 2006
By C. Cain Jr.

I don't like to wear a helmet. If you are smart you will. The Bell Radar is light, comfortable, stylish and inexpensive. I don't plan on seeing how it will hold up under a crash, but based upon the design, it should. If I were riding in the mountains, or needed extra protection, I would upgrade to one of Bells more expensive products. This one will be fine for me.

cheap in price and in make, June 5, 2007
By quackhead (New York, NY USA)
|
|
While shopping for a helmet, I noticed that this helmet had decent reviews and the price was good. However, after a couple of weeks of use the cheap plastic that attaches the strap to the helmet broke off. Looking at it and the design, I can see why it broke off. Without this attachment, the helmet is useless. Tried taping it, but the design makes it difficult for it to stay on.
I had purchased another product from Bell (the headlight and taillight combo) that also had incredibly poor quality parts and design flaws. This product was so poorly made, when I tried to insert the battery, the thing literally crumbled. Five different parts broke off in a snap.
It seems the company has been doing a lot of cost cutting and it really does show in its products.

saved my head, March 10, 2007
By billw (Sugar Land, TX USA)

I had a wreck 3 weeks ago and the helmet did its job. My head hit the pavement on a fall during a training ride. The foam cracked instead of my skull. Many thanks to Bell for making a reasonably priced and effective product.

I have a big head..., November 11, 2006
By Ron R. Santua
|
|
...and could never find a decent helmet. All the others pinched the side of my skull as if they expected me to have a peanut shaped noggin. Then, one day as I was admiring the gray hairs starting to sprout on my sides I realized my head was not spherical but that I had a natural bump on the right side. I'm no phrenologist (i.e., head bump reading fortune teller) but I could tell this helmet was in my future, snug, light, unobtrusive and stylish. Moral: knobby, big headed cyclist stop here.

Helmet doesn't adjust properly!, December 19, 2007
By morning cappuccinos (Philadelphia, PA)
|
|
Although this item is indicated to a range of sizes (and I picked a size with a similar range to my current bike helmet), this helmet just could not adjust to fit properly. There is no "band" around the head to adjust fit. So, although one could adjust the neckstrap to make the helmet more snug-seeming, it will never fit around your head properly (unless your head is the EXACT size).
With the fit of this helmet, frankly it isn't safe! This helmet I'm promptly returning.

Dumb fit, August 19, 2007
By James P. Ansbro (Richmond, Va.)
|
|
The "smart system" didn't work for me so I must be dumb. I normally wear a large helmet. I fiddled for over an hour trying to get a tight fit and could not.The Bell instructions did not indicate how to tighten up the fit. The back strap is non adjustable. I am returning it.

Doesn't sit on head well, September 28, 2006
By gelie
|
|
This helmite does not sit on my head very well. The strap that makes the perimiter shorter is attached to teh strap that holds it verticly in place. Therefore you can't make on part smaller without making the other smaller as well.

Cheap but effective, February 12, 2007
By Joecompute (Buffalo Grove, Il United States)
|
|
This helmet has an outer shell much like the plastic packaging of, say, a self serve MP-Player or such. The action is all in the foam lining - the color shel is a thin hard film of plastic. Not terribly elegant, but for the price I paid (under $10) quite a novelty

Do I have to wear this?, May 5, 2008
By Michele Christmas (Jacksonville, FL)
|
|
That is what I said when I was told that I should get a bike helmet when I decided that I wanted to get a bike. But I am so happy that I followed my friends advice and ordered it, it came to me quicker than my bike did, I put it on and the fit is great and I even fell off my bike and my head hit the ground and it was well protected. I happen to be in the store to get a bag for my bike and I saw a Bell helmet and it was way more expensive than what I paid from Amazon. Thanks for the savings.

Not so attractive, April 26, 2008
By Ataber (New York, NY United States)
|
|
I know bike helmets aren't meant to be flattering, but the cheaper Bell helmets, like this one, tend to make one look like a mushroom-head. After much careful study and input from friends, it appears the the problem lies in the extra swath of visible grayish styrofoam along the hairline, giving the whlle thing a less-than-sleek look. That said, it keeps my head unsmushed, so I'll wear it anyway.

Average helmet, January 25, 2008
By rage_wrx (NY,USA)

I bought this helmet and a Kent USA Aero helmet ,and comparatively its not all that good. You can get the Kent for just $2-3 more. The fastening system on this one isnt what I would call original. The Kent has a snugger fit. Also there is very little extra padding(just a small piece for the forehead whereas Kent gives you the whole thing),but for $15 what more could you ask for.My wife says she's not going to wear it anyway .So i guess this is for those who buy a helmet just because the law binds you to wear one!!!

Good Solid Helmet, September 17, 2007
By Mike H. (Brooklyn, NY)
|
|
If you are looking for a good helmet that fits well, look no further. The web inside sits on the head pretty well and the chin strap has "anti-pinch" which is a relief. I always hated getting skin caught when trying to close it. Also doesn't catch facial hair (for guys and some ladies...haha)
Seriously though, the helmet is good for the price. There is one little thing I would change though. The sweat pads inside get soaked way to quick and maybe should have been made from different material, like microfiber. Instead it is made from a spongy material that gets super wet. All in all, good buy.

good everyday helmet, August 14, 2007
By K. Levise (Utah, United States)
|
|
I ordered this helmet to replace the basic one that I use when riding around town or to use as a backup helmet in case something happens to my more expensive one. The biggest difference between this one and a better helmet is mainly in the fit adjustment and in the ventilation. They are all pretty much made of styrofoam and plastic. If you are looking for a good value on a bike helmet, this one sure fits the bill.

too big, June 14, 2007
By Internet Shopper Extraordinaire (Philadelphia, PA)

I ordered the small/medium and it is still too large for my head and slides around. I guess I will have to go for the kiddie size next time. Other than that it is a typical bike helmet. Not as sleek as a giro, but it will work.

good helmet, doesn't vent terribly well, May 23, 2007
By mr rwn (east nashvegas, tn)
|
|
I use this helmet for my morning and afternoon commutes.. 16mi roundtrip through city and greenway conditions. I have a big head, literally and figuratively, so the medium/large rides a little high on my noggin. It's still reasonably comfortable.
I've added some $5 Nathans reflective stickers to increase visibilty. (I won't hesitate to suggest that anyone who rides with traffic should light themselves up light a christmas tree.)
My only complaint would be that now that we're getting into the upper 80's, it does not vent very well. I suppose that is what you pay for in the more expensive helmets.

Cheap Quality, October 15, 2009
By Rob (Philadelphia, PA)
|
|
The product claims it is "the best in it's league" which essentially means that this is what you get for what you pay. When looking at the product before I bought it, I though this was a decent buy for the price. Now I realize I should have invested a little more money and gotten myself a better helmet.
Day 2 after buying it, the strap came off but I was able to fix it. On day 10, the helmet fell on to the floor (I was not wearing it when it fell) and the side cushioning broke off. Now that was beyond repair and made me realize that cheap quality is what you get when you try to save money. If you are a regular city biker like I am, I would advise you to stay away from this product. Go to a local EMS store or something and get a much better helmet for about 20 bucks more.

Cheap, but it does the job!, June 17, 2009
By C. Padovan (Boston, MA USA)
|
|
It arrived sooner than it was predicted and I'm using it for the last month. I could adjust for my head and my husband's since the size is Medium/Large, using the extra foam that came together with the helmet. I have to confess that the appearance is a little bit "cheap" despite the fact that it has "2 stars" (of 3 maximum) related to security and comfort. I hope never need it in an accident but the price totally worth it!

You get what you pay for, April 16, 2008
By Skruffy (Boston)

This is a decent helmet, though a bit clunky and awkward. It also does not fit as comfortably as a better helmet does. It's not uncomfortable, just not as good.
You'd be better of shopping around for a better helmet left over from a previous model year at a discounted price. You'll pay a little bit more and get a helmet that feels much better on your head.

Won't know until I really need it, wearing it is fine, but it feels as if landing on it could still be painful as it doesn't quite catch the contour of my skull... May just be the shape of mine though. Airy and non restrictive which is good.

Decent cheap helmet, August 14, 2007
By newB roadie (cincinnati OH)
|
|
For the money this helmet can't be beat. It fits well. I only give it three stars because it is pretty heavy compared to the pricier models, and it doesn't vent as well as the pricier models, which is what you pay for in the more expensive helmets...That being said, I hope I never have to find out the hard way how effective this brain bucket is, but it seems like it will do the trick...

On the fence, August 8, 2007
By R. Missaghi (Minneapolis, MN USA)

do you really need a helmet? Motorist give 3-8inches less clearance to cyclist wearing one. At 30mph it simply shatters anyway. It only covers the top of your head, if your gonna wear one you may as well wear a full face helmet. That said I wear this anyways, it's nice, messes up my hair, doesn't "breathe" as much as i'd hope, but i've never tried another one.

good but not great, September 2, 2010
By great shopper (dallas, TX)

I bought this Bell Radar (small size) for myself and a Schwinn Thrasher Adult Micro Bicycle Helmet for my husband. I really love my husband Trasher more than my Radar. This helmet has elastic band at the back but it is not really an adjustable like schwinn Trasher has. so even though Bell Radar is smaller in size, still Schwinn Trasher fit me better because of the adjustable system.

Not bad at all, but one major issue, August 19, 2010
By C. Veresh (Taylor, MI)
|
|
It's worked, though I haven't tested the it's melon protecting abilities fortunately. I had one, potentially major issue with it when the clamps thread did not extend long enough to go under my chin and snap in place by my ear. I never thought I had a long face, and I still don't, but if your head is shaped more like an egg than a basketball like mine than you might want to watch out. To rectify the problem I extended the clamp to the very edge and sowed it to stay there and now it fits fine, though barely. Other than that, it's comfortable, keeps my head cool, and the cap-like front end is nice. And you can't be the price (though if the melon breaks, think less positively of that).

Fairly attractive, reasonably priced helmet. Ordered small/medium based on head-size (cm.) designations on display page. If you are looking for a cost effective helmet, this is as good as any. The construction quality is not the best, but it does provide adequate protection for your head in case of a fall. It's not the most comfortable helmet, but it sits on my head snugly. If you are a biking enthusiast, this helmet is not for you. If you are like me and go for an occasional ride, then the price of this cannot be beat.

Not very adjustable; neck strap position a poor fit for me, September 6, 2009
By kaivamei (USA)
|
|
I got this for the simplicity of adjustment, and it is simple! But there is a tradeoff in that adjustment is limited.
The neck strap position is a poor fit for me -- it is too far back, annoyingly pressing up against the top of my neck -- but there is nothing I can do about it. So in the end, this turns out to be a very uncomfortable helmet.
In short: you're fine if it happens to fit you; but if not, tough luck.

Sturdy, lightweight, and comfortable, May 15, 2009
By Frank J. Perricone (People's Republic of Vermont)

About the only thing I don't like about this helmet is the color: my wife's helmet is a nice red that matches her bike, but for my size my choices were bland silver and bland grey.
But the helmet feels solid and is light and comfortable, with good ventilation. The straps are easy to adjust and the fit is good; the helmet comes with stick-on pads to improve the fit but I didn't need to use them.
I haven't given it the test of actually falling while wearing it, thankfully!
