Item Specifications
ResistanceFluid
The Kinetic Road Machine is the most popular trainer Kinetic makes and has become the company's go-to model for indoor workouts. The perfect workout partner for sprints to intervals to all-day cruising, the Road Machine is quiet, smooth, and, like every Kinetic Trainer, it's 100 percent leak-proof. The power calibration gives you true outdoor simulation while the automatic resistance adjusts as you change speeds.

When the rear wheel spins on a fluid trainer, an impeller rotates through liquid to create resistance. Since hydrodynamics and aerodynamics have similar properties, this resistance automatically increases with speed. The result is a smoother, quieter, more road-like experience. This is critical for any indoor cyclist, for the faster you pedal the harder the workload gets, just like an outdoor ride. Trainers with automatically adjusting workloads enable any rider to accurately measure their progress because the workloads are repeatable from day to day.

Why Kinetic?

  • Leak-proof Performance
Kinetic offers the smoothest, quietest, road-like resistance, and 100 percent leakproof performance. Rather than using leak prone technology, like a drive shaft that penetrates the fluid chamber and depends on O rings and traditional seals, each Kinetic Fluid Trainer features a patented magnetic drive system. By using neodymium magnets to link the drive system together, the dependence on a physical drive shaft entering the fluid chamber is entirely eliminated--which means no need for O rings or seals that will eventually wear out and leak.

  • Biggest Flywheel
Kinetic Fluid Trainers are equipped with the heaviest flywheels available, ranging from a solid 4.4 pounds to a massive 18 pounds. The result is an ultra smooth, road-like ride without altering the force curve. So every acceleration and coast down delivers the experience of riding outdoors.

  • Stability
With the trapezoidal leg design and the largest footprint of any trainer, Kinetic Fluid Trainers keep power and motion focused on the flywheel. So even during hard, out-of-the-saddle pedaling, the ride remains rock steady.

  • Works with Specialy Bikes
Kinetic is the only trainer approved for use with tandems. Kinetic Trainers are also fully compatible with wheels measuring 16 to 29 inches (outside diameter), including bikes with flip-off skewers, breezer drops-outs, and nutted axles on track and BMX styling.

  • Low Operating Temperature
According to the laws of physics, energy is never lost or gained, but simply changes form. In the case of a fluid trainer, the energy of the spinning impeller inside the fluid chamber is converted into heat. Kinetic Fluid Trainers have been designed with 80 cast aluminum cooling fins to dissipate heat and provide the lowest operating temperature of any trainer.

  • Thermodynamically Neutral
Unlike other fluid trainers that lose resistance when the fluid is heated up, Kinetic Fluid Trainers use thermodynamically neutral liquid silicon to ensure a consistent, measurable and repeatable workload at all temperatures.

Features:
  • Measurable and repeatable workload
  • Compatible with Pro Flywheel
  • Wattage calibrated resistance unit
  • Sealed fluid chamber with magnetically coupled driveshaft
  • Thermodynamically neutral silicone resistance fluid
  • Consistent resistance at multiple temperatures
  • 80 cooling fins to dissipate heat
  • Lowest operating temperature of any fluid trainer
  • Guaranteed not to leak
  • Unconditional lifetime warranty
  • Lifetime crash replacement policy
  • Alternative cone cup
  • Includes a DVD with assembly Instructions and a 60-minute workout from Coach Troy Jacobson, official coach of Ironman

Specifications:

  • Flywheel Weight: 6.25 pounds for realistic coast down
  • Coast Down Time: 15-second coast from 20 miles per hour
  • Resistance: 5 to 3,000+ watts
  • Roller: 2-1/8 inches

5.0 out of 5 stars.  When the weather is all wrong , This Baby Is Alright!, February 14, 2006
By Marc (St. Louis, Mo.)
I purchased the Kurt Kenetic two months ago, and am thrilled with its performance and quality. If you are considering purchasing a trainer, fluid trainers are the way to go. Basically, there are four major types of trainers: Magnetic,Wind, Rim Driven, and Fluid. The later is the best, hands down! Fluid resistance trainers are more quiet, smoother and more realistic than any of the others mentioned. The only drawback to the fluid trainer is that over time they can leak resistance fluid. There are three companies that have solutions to this drawback. I highly recommend that you research all three and test them out where possible. A good review page is Roadbikereview.com . The CycleOps Fluid 2 is ultra smooth and quiet. They have a limmited warranty on thier products, but are known for standing behind their trainers for life, and will fix any issues probably for life! The One Up Trainer has all the advantages of a fluid trainer, but uses no fluid in its designe, it is made in America and carries a life time warranty. The Kurt Kinetic, which I decided to purchase, is IMHO, the best because it utilizes a sealed fluid unit and therefore is guranteed not to leak. These three units are roughly the same price, around $260.00. Steep? Think of it this way, This product is going to be your companion for many winters, so don't buy a loud, crappy one with crappy customer service! You'll regret later that you didn't spend the extra $75 or $80 on a quality product. I also tested the Blackburn Fluid, $100 bucks cheaper, not bad for price, but since it is new to the market I was unsure about durabillity or how well they stand behind thier trainers after warranty expiration. I have heard amazing testimonials of how Cyclops, Kurt, and One Up, have replaced parts and even whole trainers, no questions asked! Google these three companies and see for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  The best trainer you can buy, January 9, 2007
By J Hendrick (Radcliff KY)
I have had several other trainers of this type that were used by my son and myself for training on Road, Mountain, and Recumbent. This one is the best. From the moment you heft it out of the shipping carton until you set it up you know this is quality and not like all the others. It is BUILT strong.
I am 6'3" and 215 lbs. This trainer acts like I'm not there. The greatest feature is the quietness with which it operates. You can watch the Spinerval DVD or TV and not have to be blasted off the seat. Bike mounting on the trainer is straight and very simple while being very secure. I love it and use it regularly with great results.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Kurt Kinetic has the best fluid trainer, September 11, 2006
By Shea Wilkinson
I've had my Kurt Kinetic Road Machine since 2001 and it has never leaked. I put an average of 1200 miles per winter on it and it's always been reliable, relatively quiet, and has a better feel than any non-fluid trainer. The Road Machine Pro has an even heavier flywheel so offers an even better feel, I'd say. The best thing you could do is read the reviews on other sites. Try a couple out at a local bike shop and then buy the best. After all my initial reviews and ongoing knowledge of bike trainers, Kurt was and still is the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  love my sore muscles, September 15, 2006
By spinnie (New York, NY)
I got this trainer thinking that it would be a good workout for days when I was too lazy to carry my bike downstairs or go to the gym. I've taken spinning classes for a few years, and never thought that using a trainer would produce a workout as intense as my classes. This trainer definitely does.

I've never used another one, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I LOVE this trainer. Keeping the resistance up will give you a great workout and you can use your gears modify the resistance while riding. It remains stable even when I stand up on it.

Overall, I just love it. It's quiet, easy to use, and takes up minimal space.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Favorable experience with Kurt Kinetic Trainer, January 11, 2007
By Richard Hughes
I am very happy with the trainer. Most impressively, it is much quieter than my previous mag trainer. I can easily listen to music while riding without the music being so loud it bothers the rest of the family. I ride about 30 minutes a day on it .... it is a great part of a cardiac risk factor prevention program.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good choice, August 29, 2008
By no longer California Dreamin' (Huntsville, AL USA)
I picked up the KK fluid atrainer after doing the requisite web research and after several weeks of use I am very pleased with my purchase. The trainer is compact, stable, easy to setup, well made, reasonably quiet, doesn't get too hot when riding at 19+mph for 60+ minutes and allows the bike to attach/detach quickly. The riser for the front wheel is useful for added stability, comfort, and reduced floor wear.

The experience is very similar to riding on the road (the trainer is way less fun of course) and gives a very good workout. I also have the Garmin Forerunner 305 with quick release mount which is works well with the optional wireless cadence/speed meter and wireless heart rate monitor. The Forerunner 305 is great on the road as well and is also useful for other activities such as running and cross country skiing.

Make sure to release the pressure on the rear wheel after each training interval to minimize taking the rear wheel out of true. Also apply only as much pressure as needed to the rear wheel to provide traction without slipping (no more than the manufacturer's recommended two complete turns on the tightening wheel).Garmin Forerunner 305 Wrist-Mounted GPS Fitness Computer with Heart Rate MonitorGarmin GSC 10 Speed Cadence Sensor for Edge and Forerunner Series (010-10644-00)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesome Trainer, June 28, 2009
By john (Chicago, IL USA)
I've owned this for about 4 months now and am happy to report that it has been awesome. I was debating between this one and the Cycleops Fluid 2. I chose this one over the fluid 2 based on the few reports of the fluid 2 springing a leak. While it seems like a rare complication, it would likely be an enormous pain in the neck. Also, I've never heard of the Kurt leaking so that's what made the difference for me. While the Kurt is more expensive than the Cycleops, if you check around, there are really great deals to be found on the Kurt (look up "Angry Badger"). I got mine for WAY less than amazon and even cheaper than the fluid 2.
Now on to the Kurt Kinetic itself. It's green. Very green. But I actually like it. Other positives: 1)It's very stable, even when standing on the pedals 2) it's quiet (but I have those skinny, smooth road tires). I can easily watch TV over the noise. 3) It's easy to put together out of the box (a few minutes) 4)it provides a great workout. You change the resistance by changing gears on the bike 5)it's good practice if you're new to clipless pedals (but any trainer would work for that).

I ended up having to use the skewer that came with the trainer because my fancy skewer would not fit on the bolt of the trainer. No big deal at all. I just keep their skewer on my bike now.

From what I've read, this may be the best trainer in its class. I haven't tested any other ones but I would say that this is an excellent piece of equipment. If you're serious about training, then you can't go wrong with this one. I have included some pictures. Hope they help.
John

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Wonderful!, November 9, 2006
By Soon To Teach (Gettysburg, PA United States)
I bought this for my husband to use and he LOVES it! The only thing I can say negative is that it is quite noisy and he has to have the TV turned way up in order to hear the directions above the noise of his spinning.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Fluid Trainer, February 27, 2008
By drrln621 (San Antonio, Texas USA)
I've been using my Kurt Kinetic Road Machine for about a week now and have found it very helpful in maintaining and increasing my fitness during the rainy season in the Pacific Northwest. Setup was very easy and straightforward (once I was able to free up the axle nut on the left side, which seemed to be jammed at first. I just had to be persistent in twisting hard until it loosened up). I was up and pedaling within 10 minutes of opening the box. I don't have any experience with other trainers so I was expecting a greater degree of "progressive resistance" in the fluid trainer than I am experiencing, but I have no basis for comparison since I have never used any other kind of trainer. The unit is realtively quiet and very smooth. I also appreciated the "Spinervals" DVD that came with it. Very helpful. I would definitely recommend this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice Trainer, December 20, 2008
By Rider (Bozeman, MT)
I have been using this trainer for about 2 weeks after purchasing through Amazon. It arrived very quickly, about 3 days after ordering using regular shipping. It was easy to set up. I chose this one after doing a bit of web research and based my decision on the warranty and design (wide stance and large roller). It is very stable, thanks to the front legs which swing outward to give the unit a wide stance. In use, it is indeed extremely stable. It is noisier than I expected, even with my smooth road slick tire. For example, I tried riding while listening to the radio, but could not hear it unless I was in a lower gear pedaling slowly. Now I listen to my ipod at about 3/4 volume. This is important, since riding indoors is DEAD boring! I have been managing about 20-25 minute workouts because of the boredom issue, compared to 1-2 hour rides in season. I believe that this noise issue is entirely to be expected.

By and large, the design is good. As is typical, the entire unit is constructed in China. Along with that, come some negative issues in terms of the construction quality. The fluid unit is mounted on a plastic mount that is a bit cheesy, and the unit tilts back and forth a bit, sometimes squeaks too. Need to put a bit of grease on this and perhaps tighten it a little. The tension spring does not have a correct stop on the L-bolt so it kind of wraps around it. These are relatively minor things, and typical for the kind of quality we have become used to in the USA. Probably, none of the other units are better, and most likely worse. The instructions could be better. But it is easy to put together and it is probably faster without reading them. The video has a clear assembly description and it is useful.

I also got the riser with the trainer. It is very strong and stable when riding.

Overall, this is a very good trainer with excellent stability. You can get an excellent workout with this unit and the feel is very realistic. However, I'm looking forward to warmer weather with no snow on the ground!

As an update to this review, in my second season using the trainer the threads on the L-bolt and its nut, which are used to tighten the roller against the bicycle wheel became damaged. After use, I always loosen the roller so it is not putting constant pressure on the tire and rim. The nut became very hard to tighten, and I had to use a tap and die to fix up the threads. The quality of the original threads was VERY poor. After this repair, the nut is extremely easy to tighten. Much easier than when the trainer was new. Probably, it is a good idea to lubricate the threads to help prevent them from getting damaged.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Mostly Satisfied, February 2, 2011
By S. Lary
Product shipped on time. It was extremely easy to set up. Installing bike was a bit clumsy. The mechanism for sliding the adjuster in and out could be spring loaded so it holds it's position. Balancing bike, adjusting spacing and fighting with shifter cable that runs along my skewer posed a challenge. Don't have to take the bike out very often so not a big deal. The CycleOps has an easier entry system.

One item that did disappoint is that there is no adjustment on the legs to level the unit. I use the unit in the basement and the floor slopes to a center drain. I had to use spacers to level the unit. My daughter bought the less expensive magnetic CycleOps and it had adjusters in the legs. For the price I paid for the Kurt I expected as much.

The resistance system works just fine. I do find I have to ride in higher gears for the same output as when I ride outside but those are easy adjustments to make. I don't however feel a big difference in resistance with increase speed.

It accomplishes what I need, an indoor trainer to get through winter. If I had to do it all over again I would definitely look at the CycleOps.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  The kind of service that is appreciated, January 29, 2008
By Jay (Southern California)
In this day and age with all of the different suppliers, it is nice to deal with one that sells a good product, ships the correct product and does as stated. I received the product undamaged and quickly. I had a question I needed answered through email and they responded promptly and correctly, and professionaly. I will do business with them in the future.
Thanks for this kind of service

5.0 out of 5 stars.  The Rolls Royce of trainers, July 25, 2010
By Old Codger (USA)
I have loved, rode and built bicycles all my life. Now, being 73 years old with a very bad back, I need to keep in shape but can't ride in the open anymore. Can't stand exercise bikes, so have been using trainers with my Cannondale for the last 4 years. The disappointments I have had is that I couldn't find a trainer that lasted. Magnetics never give acceptable resistance and I have gone through 3 'name brand' fluid units; 1 wore out the bearings, 2 started leaking oil; all just after the warranty period expired. In desperation, because I absolutely needed the exercise, I decided to go for broke and get the best rated trainer I could find. The Kurt Kinetic won out. Bought one and set it up and had a problem with an out of balance flywheel. Expecting, as usual, a lot of static from the manufacturer, I called Kinetic about it. Had the most courteous and helpful assistance I have ever had for this kind of service. The people I spoke to were horrified about the problem. They immediately offered to send a NEW and TESTED resistance unit and a return box and label for the old one at THEIR expense so they could discover why the unit was not right. The new one arrived within 3 days and has been a dream to use. Kicking myself now for not finding out about Kinetic sooner.
This unit is absolutely wonderful; Really good resistance, really stable and tough. With the lifetime warranty and the kind of service Kinetic offers, will use this thing 'till I die. LOVE IT! BUY ONE, you won't be sorry!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Machine, January 21, 2008
By Dennis (NW Florida, USA)
I really like this trainer. It's well made and very easy to set up. You can be exercising in just a few minutes. This is my first trainer so I can't compare this unit to any other make, however, this unit does perform as advertised. The feel is smooth, and to me the noise generated is not a problem. I listen to CD's during my exercise sessions and the music keeps me motivated and my spirits up. I enjoy interval training and getting my heart rate up to 90-95% of my max and this unit is great for that type of training. You actually have more control when exercising hard with this unit than when you're on the road. I highly recommend the Kurt Kinetic trainer. I also liked the Troy Jacobson "Spinervals" DVD that was included in the deal. He provides some very good workout routines to follow.

This trainer was super easy to set up. It literally took about 5 minutes to go from opening the box to mounting my bike. I have only put a few miles on it so far, but I can tell that I'm going to have a great time working out this winter when it is too cold to ride outside (I'm a huge wimp when it comes to cold weather). It is also really quite when in operation. I was riding it at 20mph and the noise wasn't too bad at all, most of the noise came from my bike's drive train and not the trainer. This applies to any trainer, but I recommend that you buy a high velocity fan to go with this because without any wind (even though we cyclists normally HATE the wind) it is really easy to work up a sweat in stagnate air.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great trainer, fantastic service, November 18, 2010
By Matt Libbey
I'm not one who usually posts reviews on Amazon, but after my experiences with this product, I knew I had to weigh in with my support.

First was Amazon's speed. I ordered the trainer on a Thursday night, and it was delivered the next Monday-- even though I selected the Free (e.g., slow) Shipping option for this 30lb package to save on costs.

Second was Kurt Manufacturing's service. When I opened the box and pulled out the trainer, I noticed a light, oily residue on the roller and on the frame. I figured I had a defective unit and called Kurt, expecting to have to deal with some automated system that would just tell me to go to their website. Not only did the phone ring to a real person right away, but she actually had an answer that didn't involve replacing the unit (it was likely just excess machine oil from the manufacturing process). She apologized profusely and suggested I use a de-greaser to take it off. She then recommended I use the unit for a couple of days, call her back if I noticed any problems, and promised to replace the unit at their cost if I noticed any issues. She also took my serial number with the intention to follow up with the retailers who stocked that batch to make sure they were aware of the potential issue. Smart, friendly, pro-active customer service... fantastic. And after significant, heavy daily use, I can confirm the unit is definitely not leaking.

Third is the unit itself. I bought this for off-season training and to avoid having to restart the spring at zero fitness. The frame is very stable, even in standing sprints, and the resistance curve makes it easy to map out and plan intervals. At high speeds it isn't as quiet as I had thought a fluid trainer would be, but it is still significantly quieter than a wind trainer at the same speeds. While not Kurt's top-of-line unit, this one is still relatively expensive, but as with much of life, you get what you pay for. I'm glad I spent the extra to get a high-quality machine that I won't toss with disgust.

My one gripe is that the written directions for assembly were not very clear. I had to puzzle through a few things that I felt were confusing or omitted in the directions. However, I then popped in the accompanying Spinervals DVD and found out that the first 10 minutes were detailed video instructions for assembly and use of the trainer. I'd recommend a sticker for the instructions that says "Please ignore this and watch the DVD instead." This gripe is truly minor, though, and completely irrelevant once you get the thing set up and take that first spin.

In short, I'd give the trainer five stars just for the unit itself and what it has added to my training. Adding Kurt's service and Amazon's speed, I would rate this product even higher if I could.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Get it, you won't regret it!!, November 25, 2009
By Nels (Fargo, N.D.)
This fluid trainer is excellent. This trainer is solid and sturdy with no movement or tipping. The fluid resistance is realistic and will keep giving you a good workout. If you have a road bike, the noise won't be a factor. I use mine with a mountain bike, but I have a trainer wheel to keep the noise down.

Get yourself a Speedometer, Cadence, distance bike computer to track yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very Satisfied, January 2, 2009

This is my first trainer and I was willing to pay a little more for quality. The lifetime warranty and no-leak guarantee seemed to be unique to this brand. I've ridden the trainer 3 times now and I can say that it has excellent initial quality. (That's all I can speak for since it's so new) It has a great, road-like feel and it is very quiet. It is very stable and also, since its power curve is so accurate, you can use the Kinetic power computer to estimate power when using the trainer. (Since actual power meters are really expensive) Kinetic Power Computer N/A 13 Function The parts are all well crafted, solid, machined parts. I highly recommend this trainer!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Worthy of spending my time reviewing., January 28, 2008
By Popsicledeath (Boise, ID)
I don't usually bother with writing reviews, but this trainer has really impressed me.

The packaging was impressively compact and sturdy, and the actual trainer folds up into a pretty manageable size if you need to tuck it away while not in use. It was easy to set up. I didn't even have to read the instructions and I was riding in 15 minutes of deliver.

It was also not nearly as loud as I feared. Don't get me wrong, it is loud, but it's not so loud that I can't watch tv while I ride. I've started using head phones just to be more noise concious as the tv was obviously louder than normal viewing levels.

I was concerned at the green color, but it's not nearly as bad as in the pictures; it seems a bit less neon and obnoxious in person.

The resistance and ride isn't obviously exactly that of actually road riding, but it feels more like real cycling than any excercise bike I've ever ridden.

I would highly recommend buing some sort of riser for the front wheel, as it just doesn't feel right without one.

Only time will tell whether or not this product is worth the cost in the long term, but after being stuck indoors for the better part of a week with sub freezing weather I'm very pleased.

The only con was that it was covered in dust.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Kurt Kinetic Worth the money, May 7, 2009
By Roubaixman (Springfield, OH USA)
This is the first trainer I have bought, but ater reading others reviews of some less expensive trainers, I can see why this got rave reviews. Instructions are clear, but it was really quite simple to figure out. took 10 minutes to set up and put bike on it. Only takes a minute to switch out bikes and adjustable tension lets you feel like you are riding. We use the trainer 2-4 days a week dependant on weather and switch my bike and my wifes out every day. This is built solid, and we have had no issues with machine performance.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good trainer, November 23, 2008
By I. Godfrey
Bought this for fitness versus serious bike training and to replace my old stationary bike. It does the job well and takes up a lot less space than the stationary bike. I haven't tried any other trainers out, so I can't compare, but it was noisier than expected and difficult for me to get my bike placed on the unit correctly. But as I use it more that should get easier for me. Overall, I am pleased with this unit.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Shipping problem, December 16, 2007
By M. Evans (Yukon, Ok)
I have only used the trainer enough to determine that it works but not enough to rate it. I will rate it when I have used it longer.

It arrived in a shipping box that had been badly torn and hastily re-taped. The trainer was encased in a plastic bag which had a disturbing amount of loose dirt inside. I removed the trainer, brushed the dirt away with a soft cloth and assembled it according to the enclosed instructions. I then had to pour the dirt from the plastic bag into a trash can.

I can only hope that the trainer continues to work as advertised.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good trainer for an apartment dweller., November 21, 2011
By durrango69 (Sioux Falls, SD USA)
I have had my Kurt Kinetic Road Machine for 1 month. I have about 7 hours of total ride time. I have a Cannondale Synapse 7 road bike and am a very new rider. I live in a 2nd floor apartment and I use the Kinetic rubber mat with my trainer to help reduce vibration. I noticed the vibrations are the worst while accelerating. Once you are up to speed, the trainer is very smooth and has little vibration. My neighbor below me says he cannot hear anything, but we have pretty good construction in our building.

I took the advice of others and put a cheap used tire on my bike. I was very glad I did this. In the short time I have ridden, I can already see the wear marks on the tire and anticipate having to replace it before next winter.

It took a long time to get the wheel adjusted to the point where it made the least amount of noise. There was a lot of squeaking! I found I had to inflate the tire to the maximum recommended PSI before the squeaking stopped. Though part of that could be the fact that it's a cheap used tire.

The tire still squeaks at very low speeds (<10mph), but once I am up and running, the noise in the room is a medium hum where you can still hold normal conversations with other people. You can also hear the normal noise of the bike chain running against the gears. I would call the overall noise minimal, but you would not want to train at 2AM if you are in an apartment. I have to turn the TV up a few notches to watch movies while I am riding and when I put headphones on, I cannot hear the trainer at all.

Overall, I am very happy with this trainer and expect a lot of good use from it.

---6 month update-----
The trainer is working out better than expected. I have over 400 miles on it now and its working great. The used tired has not shown any further signs of wear. The squeaking noise now only occurs for the first minute of riding then its gone. I dare say the trainer is even quieter now that it and the tire are "broken in" together.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Thats one ncie trainer!, February 27, 2011
By Opensrcguru
The Kurt Kinetic has become a somewhat permanent fixture in my living room. Although the wife thinks its misplaced, she does like the convenience it brings to her life (as do I). It feels nice, it's pretty quiet (my 7mo old and my 20mo old sleep while I'm using it 20' away), and it's Kawasaki green paint job is second to none. Install and setup were a breeze. The only recommendation I can make is be sure to buy a trainer tire unless you want to burn through your normal outdoor/road tire.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Roller mount needs better engineering, February 14, 2010
By 4rbish (Asheville, NC)
Great trainer, the resistance is good, the product is solid and the mechanics of the roller and resistance unit are superb. I have a lot of confidence in those parts holding up. The plastic mount plate for the resistance and roller unit is not well designed. The bolt and sleeve that hold it on (allows the resistance unit to be rotated up and down) is sloppy. That may be insignificant when it is tightened up against the tire, but it's one of those "feels cheap" things that you would think they would take care of after building everything else so well. Also, they offer a replacement tightening bolt for "when" it strips. Nice of them to admit that this part will eventually crap out, but again, how dumb to make such an insignificant part on the cheap when the other main components are top-of-the-line. All told, it's reliable and smooth enough that all you have to worry about is your work out, not the equipment.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Outstanding Product - Don't settle for less!, November 3, 2009
By Moonlight Groove (Buffalo, NY USA)
The Kurt Kinetic is my first trainer. I did a lot of research on trainers before purchasing, and finally settled on this one. It has a very fast setup/assembly time(less than 30 minutes). After assembly, I disassembled and broke it down to a storage state and then tried a reassembly. Although the initial setup took longer, I was able to set-up and reassemble in less than 5 minutes. It breaks down to be easily stored in a compact space. Operates relatively quiet (don't expect a whisper - it's more like a fan. You can expect some initial tire squeaking after first set-up, but that goes away after a few hours of riding. It is built solid and is very stable. Provides a great workout, and I'm very happy that I spent the extra money on a quality piece of equipment.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  No Regrets!, August 21, 2009
By J. Miller (TX)
I'm an amateur cyclist that wanted a trainer to just get extra exercise. I looked a long time and considered many less expensive models because before you have one, it is difficult to know how much you'll use it and if you'll get your money's worth. In the end though, I decided to go with the Kurt Kinetic Road Machine because of the many reviews I've read both positively for this product and negatively for many cheaper products.

Overall, I couldn't be more satisfied! It is quieter than I expected based on reviews. I have it in my living room where I can watch recorded shows on my DVR while I ride. My normal TV volume is around 17 and while riding I increase the volume to about 25, which is only a moderate increase. Since I've started using it, I've found I ride even more than I expected. I've now had the Road Machine for about 4 months and am averaging 16 miles per ride 2-4 days a week.

Pros: Fairly quiet, very sturdy, easy to setup and take down, good feel for acceleration and actual riding

Cons: Should have bought the flywheel to improve the feel of actual riding. The weights seem to help a great deal

5.0 out of 5 stars.  kurt kinetic, February 7, 2008
By Primal (Baton Rouge, LA)
Just recieved this trainer in the mail a couple days ago and am having a great time. It was easy to set up and I was riding within 15 minutes of openning the box. The resistance is smooth and feels much more realistic that other trainers that I have tried through the years, I think the weight wheel that comes with it is a great feature. I only wish now that I had bought the one with more weight to provide a "more" realistic ride. The frame is very stable and the quick release allows me to transition to an outside ride in just a minute or two. I highly recommend this trainer to anyone who can't get outside for whatever reason.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  The Best!, January 4, 2012
By Jeffrey Weigand
For twenty years I rode a mag trainer and tried other sorts thru friends...then I got the Road Machine. Quite simply, it is in a whole other league compared to other trainers...it is about as close to road riding as you are gonna get for winter training...and while it was twice the price of my old mag turbo, it is worth every penny. On the old mag turbo,I couldn't get off the bike fast enough when I hit my allotted training time...with the Road Machine, I enjoy it so much I do even more time...I find myself actually looking forward to the old dreaded winter training session. Unbelievably good trainer...get one and you won't be sorry.

A further note...they have about the best customer service I have ever experienced...had a slight problem with vibration and they sent me a new resistance unit and flywheel along with a prepaid box to return the other resistance unit...this way, I never missed a day on my trainer over winter...other companies, if they even back up their product, would have you return your unit and wait and wait until they sent you a new one...that and would most likely charge you postage...Kurt customer service really is the best!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent Trainer, March 2, 2011
By Raj
I debated for quite a while which trainer to purchase for the snowy winter, and to get more seat time during the week to increase my cycling fitness, speed and power. The Kinetic Road Machine was my final choice and I have not regrets. The set up is quick and easy. It is also easy to fold and store away when not in use. The unit is quiet, but not whisper quite, but that is okay. The quality is amazing, it's a solid unit. You definitely fell the resistance from the motor. As long as you have a heart rate monitor and a cadance monitor for you bike, you can get some great work outs on this unit. It is worth every penny.

Amazon delivery service was quick, as always, even with the free shipping.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent trainer, April 5, 2008
By A. Marshall (Seattle, WA USA)
An excellent trainer (noticeably better than the Minoura I had previously). Even after the first 45 minute ride I could see the accelerated wear from friction on my rear Krylion tire, so an essential requirement is a tire for trainers. I will be interested to see what sort of lifespan I get from one of these tires...

I was satisfied with my former trainer, a Cycleops magnetic, until I tried this thing. No more changing tension settings. The hydraulic unit varies resistance with speed. Also, it is WAY quiter than a magnetic trainer. Couldn't ask for a better unit!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Probably the best for that price, December 22, 2011
By oleksandr (Kirkland, wa usa)
Yes, it's a bit noisy (but still compatible with fluid trainers from other brands). Another disadvantage might be it eats tires and you really need special trainer tire. But that's it.
This is probably the best indoor trainer you can find for the money. If you are looking for better "real road riding" imitation look at Kurk Rock-n-Roll trainer.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Roughly 500 miles, November 28, 2011
By GrittyGoober
I have had the unit for a few weeks and it is great. It is nice and quiet, which was a big deal for me. My previous mag trainer was so loud I couldn't hear much else. I can easily watch a training DVD without cranking the volume up.

The Road Machine was easy to set up, and has been easy to use. I am still riding outdoors, so I have put the bike on and taken it off the trainer a quite a few times. I have had no issues.

The unit has been firm and stable under the bike. It provides a solid foundation even when standing hammering out part of an interval at over 120 rpm.

The trainer does seem to be just a tad harder than road riding. It seems to be about the same as riding up a mild, maybe 1% - 1.5%, grade. That could all be in my head. I don't have a DFPM to compare watts @ speed.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Trainer, November 25, 2011
By Pat's Fan
This is the only trainer that I have owned so I have to qualify this review. I researched trainers online fairly extensively before making my purchase. My research led me to this being the most appropriate trainer for me. One thing that impressed me about it was that it lived up to all the hype I read about it. I don't often find products that this can be said of. Initially I thought that was not as quiet as they claimed but found that there is some break in period for the bike tire and resistance wheel. In no time however I found it to be as quiet as it was said to be. I thoroughly enjoy the ride. No trainer will ever be the same as riding the road but when conditions don't permit this is a great substitute.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Road Machine by Kurt Kinetic, November 3, 2011
By Notasushifan (Olympia, WA USA)
The road machine is a great product for sure. Very well-made, except a few of my parts were welded wrong. It's not that my L-bolt was bent, but the part it is supposed to fit into was crooked. I had such a hard time, I asked my husband to help me and he got it to fit in just a few minutes (haha). Also, it seems when I try to change the angles of the legs, paint comes off rather easily (the area by the nuts and screws, but I suppose that is to be expected?).

Overall, the bike trainer is awesome. It really is a lot of money to spend on something such as this, but it is one of the best trainers out there. I am a casual/recreational bike rider, so I don't use it as much as professional cyclists. When I am using it, it does not wobble. I use the training mat and the riser ring and everything is great. I also really like that the road machine has the resistance and is a fluid trainer.

It's hard to think of any negative aspects about this piece of equipment than the ones listed above. I suppose it is on the heavy side, but if you sacrifice the weight, the trainer will probably wobble...

I appreciate you reading my review. I would really recommend this to people that are into cycling, casual bike riding, or even people that would like to get/keep in shape over the winter or any season. It really is a fantastic product.

P.S. I would recommend not buying it at full price. REI has great online deals, especially if you become a member! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  The best, September 5, 2011
By shmoe
This trainer is great! I have put 500 miles on it so far. I do alot of road riding and trainer riding while training for triathlons, and the resistance on this is EXTREMELY close to the road. With my heart rate at 70% my average road speed on a flat road and my average speed on the trainer are with 1/2mph of each other. The thing is extremely beefy and extremely stable. I've tried friends trainers from cyclops and bell and they just aren't as good. Cyclops doesn't have the same road feel and the el-cheapo bell feels flimsy and is pretty unstable by comparison. Watch the fins on this as they do get pretty hot and will burn you if you have been riding hard for an hour and brush a bare ankle against it. The trainer isn't as quiet as other reviews had made me believe, but its bearable. I do have to turn my tv up about 20 decibles more than I noramlly do when I'm on the trainer and want to hear the TV. All and all after trying this trainer and many others from friends and bike shops, I wouldn't hesitate to drop the money on this one again.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  real road feel, relatively quiet... if you keep your volums up, August 1, 2011
By Li
super easy to setup, easy to install and remove bikes. one previous reviewer mentioned the locking mechanism is not spring loaded quick release, this way it actually holds bike much more firm than the other quick release/spring loaded type bike trainers. Plus, take bike off and on only takes less than a min with a couple knob turns.

i would highly recommend you take your bike's original wheel quick release off and use the provided one for a much better fit to their wheel screw coupling holes.

the trainer gives a very authentic road feel, go to your local bike shop and ask for a demo to try it out.

as for noise, it is within acceptable range, but could appear to be loud to some.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A real upgrade from the CO Mag+, April 30, 2011
By Nigel Tufnel (Boston, MA)
My advice for assembling these units is to use a workbench or table. Also, it's good to have a friend when attaching the resistance unit. It's not that heavy, but a third hand really comes in handy.

The short version of the review is this: If you need to train while monitoring power and cadence, and want a strong, reliable, quiet trainer that has road like resistance, this together with the Power Computer is the only solution for under $1,200 I know of. If you are looking more for fitness, downgrade to a CO Mag+. If you are a professional and need computerized tracking of your workout, upgrade to higher end CO units or a Computrainer.

I just got the trainer, and will update this as I get more experience. My previous trainer was the significantly less expensive Cycle Ops Mag+ (CO). See my review for that in that area. Overall build quality and frame seem very similar in some ways, which is a good thing. The general shape and the way the Resistance Unit (RU) is attached to the frame make me wonder if the frames from both makers come out of the same factory in China. Here are the differences so far:

- Kurt Kinetic (KK) claims that the power curve on this RU is close to what you'd experience riding on a flat surface. That is, if you are doing 20 MPH on this unit you should expect to be producing about the same amount of power as you would on the road. Of course, this probably only applies to the skinny bastids reading this, and not people like me with the wind resistance of a topsail, but this is a huge feature for people who want to balance cadence and power output for real rides during training.

- KK offers connection to the Power Computer ($65) which offers power output. It's not fancy, has no PC connectivity but it's a great way to see real progress and the only way I know of to train with power for under $1200.

- The maximum resistance on the CO feels really light by comparison.

- The release mechanism on the CO trainer is more repeatable and precise. Once you have the screws dialed in for your bike, attaching and releasing your rear wheel takes the blink of an eye. Set it and forget it. With the KK, there is a quick release mechanism, but tightening the bike always takes attention, as you have to manually screw it in. This doesn't sound that bad when you read it until you remember you are usually using one hand to stabilize and center the bike, and the other to tighten the screw. Of course it's a small thing, and some of you may only attach it once a year, but it is noticeable.

- The roller on the KK RU is almost 3/4" larger than the CO (2 1/8" vs. 1 7/16"). This should allow for less pressure and less wear and tear on your tire.

- Both units use a large knurled knob to tighten the RU to your rear wheel. It may just be my imagination, but it feels that the screw to tighten the RU to the wheel is much easier to tighten on the KK unit. Could this be because of the larger roller? Starting at about the same price the CO Magneto and higher end models have units with much more convenient, 1 turn handles for this function.

- KK adds a spring to the L bolt that attaches the resistance unit (RU). I'm not sure it's even necessary, but it's there.

- The CO has independently adjustable feet. Handy for those of us with old wooden floors.

- KK has a pretty sweet, upgradable flywheel. The CO Mag's resistance unit IS the flywheel but it just doesn't have enough mass to feel as realistic as the RU on the KK.

- Initial rides seem to indicate the KK is quieter. Once I have it fully set up I'll do some SPL measurements and report back.

- KK includes a full color, large manual with big pictures. CO was small with black and white pics.

Overall, I give the CO Mag+ frame 10 out of ten, for it's convenience features including the quick attachment and adjustable feet, but 6 out of 10 for the Resistance Unit. I give the KK 9 out of 10 for the frame, but 9 out of 10 for the resistance unit. I'm reserving the 10 out of 10 for units with features like computer control, and power tracking/trending. And in terms of value, both units are great values in their respective price ranges ($180 vs. $300). For $180 the CO Mag+ is a great way to exercise in the off season, and do cardio work. For $320 with the realistic power curve and $65 for the power computer the KK has features that are just impossible to approach for under $1,200. You can get CO units which claim realistic power curves for around $400, but you are still going to be shelling out another $800 or so for the power monitoring functions. For these reasons, this KK trainer is my top pic in this price category.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  High quality product, March 3, 2010
By Danarone (Cincinnati, OH)
After years riding MTB, I am new to road biking and indoor training. Did my research and ended up purchasing this trainer because it uses fluid, but has a unique magnetic coupling to prevent future problems with leakage. So far, I am extremely pleased. The unit was easy to set-up, it is very smooth and quiet, and the resistance is very realistic. I highly recommend this product.

bought this as a 'refurbished' item. would never have known that if i hadn't been told. arrived packaged as new with all the accessories. full warranty in place. GREAT price! and we really USE it! excellent piece for winter workouts. we use a dirt bike instead of a road bike, so is noiser than advertised, but is still FAR less noisy than an indoor trainer we borrowed from a friend using a road-style bike. Husband didn't believe it could be until he heard it himself. Would definitely buy from this company again.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great indoor exercise!, January 21, 2010

This is a great indoor bicycle trainer. I got this for my husband for Christmas and he loves it! It is good quality construction. It takes up just a little space when not in use. This is his first bicycle trainer, so we have nothing to compare this to, but rate this 5 Star. The price was $319, the quality is there. The Super Saver Shipping sure helps.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very Solid and very quiet, January 8, 2010
By alanrock (Tucson, AZ)
Just got this a few days ago and have been very impressed with its stability and ease of setup. I've used other trainers before, and this one is amazingly quiet and stable. I also love the quick release feature, so swapping out bikes takes literally 30 seconds (important because my son and I both use it).
It's very quiet and does NOT get hot. Used it for 2 hours and it was just warm to the touch, but certainly not hot.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Kurt makes a great product, January 6, 2009
By Markie (Flushing, NY United States)
I've owned this thing for a few months. I am not an avid rider, I just like to break up my runs with some cycling, and hope to maybe get into a triathalon sometime this year. I'll go on this thing anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, and it is pretty great. Smooth as heck, easy to adjust. Gives great resistance, as much or as little as you want by just changing your gears. should last a long time. I bought the donut thing to put my front tire on so I would be riding on a level surface and i suggest you do the same or just craft something that will lift the front tire up. Be sure to follow the directions when fitting your back tire on the device, as i just dove right in and didn't do it right and nearly sent myself pedaling 20mph into my back door. Customer service is great, i asked them a few questions re:the warranty and they emailed me right back.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Noisier than expected, March 4, 2009
By Unhandled Exception (Washington)
Good: easy to assemble and operate. Okay: variable resistance - for hill and interval training, the silicone takes a little while to heat up for real increased resistance. Bad: I didn't expect it to be so loud (this is my first trainer). To hear music/tv, I have to turn up my stereo by 10-15 Watts. I think the noise is continual squeeking coming from the tire contacting with the cylinder (maybe it should be matte for more friction at a lower contact pressure like a real road surface)?

2.0 out of 5 stars.  A trainer is a trainer is a trainer, November 2, 2010
By Edwin Fichtner (IN USA)
I expected more from the descriptions and reviews. Basically it is just another trainer. I found it does not imitate the feel of riding on the road. A low gear is ok, but larger gears and you run into the same old problem of increasing resistance that does not mimic the feel of the road. On a side note, I was very disappointed wit hthe wireless computer. Turns out it is not truely wireless as you have the cadence wire. display is small for an indoor trainer. All in all I would recomend on of the more advanced trainers with the PC interaction etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I love it., February 2, 2012
By Johnny C
I bought this for my wife for $323 USD. Had it for 3 months so far and I find myself using it more than her. Switching between our two bikes is pretty quick and easy. I find myself very motivated with it staying set up in the living room. Stick with the fluid version and you'll be satisfied. I tighten the fly-wheel against my back tire more than the recommended 3-5 turns so I get hardly any slippage. Good durable product. Reasonable price considering the compitition and you'll find this much pricier at your local bike shop (mine wanted $416).

4.0 out of 5 stars.  nice trainer. instructions don't cover it all though, January 8, 2012
By ronald s chong (va)
i just got this trainer and have put about 50 miles on it so far. very nice. great feel. the instructions makes this a 4 star rating. it does a good job explaining/showing how to put it together. what then threw me for a loop was what i was to do with the included skewer and the cup with the skewer adapter. there is zero explanation of what to do, why i should change the skewer, how to change the cup, etc. thankfully, all the explanation i needed for what, why, how was on youtube.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Feels and looks great!, November 15, 2011
By Tyler Pittman (Athens, GA)
If I am going to have to ride indoors it may as well be on my Kurt Kinetic! This is a really good, sturdy trainer. If you are looking for a quality product that is well built then look no further. You will be the envy of your training class if you bring this thing in and folks will know you are serious if you bring this out before a race.. Not only does it feel great but it looks great too. People say that trainers can't feel like the road but this thing is pretty darn close.

Recently I went to a spin/training class and a friend had the jet fluid pro by cycleops (more expensive product) and we both agreed that the kinetic felt better hands down.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great customer service to replace defective product, October 29, 2011
By Tokyo Talisman (Tokyo)
The frame sleeve for the l-bolt is not welded properly. Assembly is impossible because of the poor workmanship. I do not see any similar issues in other reviews so maybe this is a one off and not a sign of larger problems with manufacturing.

However the customer service response was great. I sent a mail on Saturday evening describing the problem. By Saturday night, Erin in customer service had promised to send out a new frame.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  You'll discover how uncomfortable your seat is, April 6, 2011
By Edward
This is a great product.

It is very stable and does not vibrate when you're riding on it. And it is quiet. Just as advertised. I recommend using the included skewer for your rear wheel, as it fits the trainer the best.

Easy to put together, easy to mount your bike. This trainer will help you discover how uncomfortable your bike seat is.

The day I received mine I had it set up within 30 minutes and was cycling indoors that night.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Are you sit-bruise prone?, November 28, 2011
By CJ
My profile: 20-something male who rides mostly for exercise and enjoyment and somewhat for athleticism.

Putting the kinetic together isn't very hard. There's only one step I think I got a little confused on, but I am also not very good at putting things together : There are very few steps as well. The unit itself is sturdy and you can tell it's well-made. Unfortunately, I found the provided skewer very difficult to install on my bike. My roommate (who also bought one) had the same difficulty on her bike. There is, however, an attachment provided that allows you to use the skewer you normally use on your bike (but, I don't know why, but I'm scared using it will cause damage to my bike or the training unit, so I stick to the provided skewer). The instructions do not explain how to use the special attachment, but if you go to the KurtKinetic.com website, they have videos that show you how to install it.

When I first started riding, I had a terrible time with sit bruises. It's been years, and they barely affect my ride now, but when I got on this Kinetic trainer I felt pain in my sit bruise "area" within 10 minutes. This really ruined the experience of riding on this trainer for me.

I returned it and got the rock-and-roll model, also by Kurt. I have yet to sit on it for a long period of time, but I am optimistic that this model allows more movement lateral movement of your bike as you're pedaling. Maybe I will come back and update this review after riding on the rock-and-roll more...

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Kinetic Road Machine Trainer, August 8, 2011
By maw
I purchased the Road Machine so I can ride my bike inside. I selected a Kinetic product based on the reviews I read from prior users. I am extremely happy with the purchase. If you are looking for a bike trainer, I would seriously consider the Road Machine. The purchasing experience with Amazon was worry free.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Just what I wanted, July 25, 2011
By Michael Scott (Scranton)
I got this to use during the winter and on rainy days. It is great.
I wanted a trainer that I could change the resistance of without getting off the bike or rigging up any wires. And as I'm sure that any fluid trainer would meet this requirement, I also wanted to make sure that my unit wouldn't leak. After reading other reviews, and talking to co-workers with leaky fluid trainers by other companies, I decided that the Road Machine was the trainer I wanted. The Road Machine website was enough to convince me that this trainer won't leak, and the warrenty put my mind at ease.

I love my trainer, and I now have quite a few friends that put the Road Machine on the top of their lists when they need to replace their current trainer.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great trainer, June 2, 2011
By TTcyclist
I've put a lot of miles on this trainer now and have never had a problem. The resistance is as close to real riding I have found while being stuck inside. It is easy to set up, quieter than most (though not silent either), smooth, it doesn't "walk" and is well built. I am confident that this trainer will last as long as I do (and the lifetime warranty helps with that). It's expensive, but also much better than the cheap alternative. I would recommend and climbing block, a fan and a mat with this.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Bicycle trainer, April 4, 2011
By JoeBroke
This product is great regarding the use of magnetic coupling. My only comment is the mechanism to engage the trainer to the back wheel. It uses the screw in method to engage/disengage the back wheel to the trainer. I think CycleOps has the better design on it which just uses a lever to close the trainer to the wheel. Other than that the design and feel is superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Cold snowy winters on a trainer, January 31, 2011
By Mark Reisinger
I am avid cyclist living in Upsate New York where the winters are cold and snowy. I spend more time than I like riding indoors on a trainer. I have used two other trainers for the past several years before purchasing the Road Machine. There is a world of difference. The Road Machine has a much truer road feel and I can actually get a great work out on it. It has quality construction and is easy to assemble. If you are looking for a trainer, I highly recommend the Road Machine. It may be a bit costlier than some other brands, but it is clearly worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  An Excellent Trainer for the Money, January 19, 2011
By T. Robinson (Perry, MI United States)
I've had this about a month. Setup is very easy. I like the adjustable height feature so I can run the rear wheel as close to the ground as possible, eliminating the need to raise the front wheel with blocks to keep it level. It is very sturdy and very stable. Also it is very quite and with the nice heavy flywheel it is closer to riding a bike on the road than most trainers I have used. I installed a rear wheel pickup computer (wired) and so can record my miles, avg speed, distance etc. I think that is probably a cheaper way to go than buying the trainer with the computer built in. This is a very nice quality piece of equipment.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  This is the perfect one!, January 19, 2011
By R. Pichardo (Miami, Florida United States)
I'm a road and mountain biker and when I knew I was pregnant I decided to continue with my bike but stationary for safety. I have balance problems so I used to be on the ground very often :-). So I started searching information about all type of bike trainers and after two weeks I decided to buy this one. I can say that it's excellent!, smooth and you really feel you are working out. I took the best decision. Worth extra money paid, if you compare with others brands. It's easy to install and very steady and tough, you really feel you are on ground moving. I found no necessary to buy the front wheel support; it works with any no slippery object. I expected to be more quite but nothing that music couldn't help.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Trainer, December 22, 2010
By blovely
I wasn't sure which trainer to buy between the Road Machine and Fluid 2 by Cycle Ops. I chose this one so I can hopefully avoid the notorious failing O ring (although I understand Cycle Ops may have fixed this problem with newer models).
I've used this trainer for about a month now. I love it! It is very quiet. It is also very realistic feeling. I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Far too frustrating to mount the bike, April 6, 2011
By Michele Vaughan (Colorado Springs, CO USA)
I live in Colorado so training indoors in the winter is a fact of life here. My husband and I both use this trainer, so we switch bikes daily. I have found mounting the bike on the trainer so frustrating and difficult I often spend up to 10 minutes fighting to get the bike in the trainer. The legs often collapse when trying to get the bike in the trainer. Once in the trainer it works ok, but I'm so frustrated by that point. The positive thing is I'm so frustrated by the time I jump on my bike I get a good workout! If it weren't so expensive, I'd have taken it to Goodwill and bought a Cycleops trainer.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A true great machine!, May 16, 2012
By maklan
I have been an avid cyclist for a good many year now, but much of that changed after the arrival of our first child. Needless to say the long rides ceased because there was so much more to take care of at home. My solution? The Road Machine! I have had it now for a little over a month, riding 4 out of every five days on it or so, at about an hour each time, and I will say I am completely satisfied. Its very well build, sturdy, easy to set up and break down, and give a good soild workout with a realiastic road riding feel. I'm main reason for choosing it over others was reviews I read as to how quiet it is - and the reviews did not lie - it is very quiet - which works well when you have a newborn in the house. Truth be told its not silent, but at 20 mph, its a soft whine, as opposed to an ear deafening squeal, like other trainers I've tried. Paired with running say the washing machine or dishwasher, this thing is not nearly as loud. I listen to music off an ipod while I ride, and cant even hear the trainer. Two words of advice -you will sweat ALOT on this thing - so either postion a fan in front of you when riding, or purchase a floor mat and have a workout towel available at all times. (you will drip all over the place) I would suggest some good music wide you ride. I usually will do sprints, jumps (sitting up and down repeatedly), or full out pedal stands during choruses or interludes to keep workout variety up. Second piece of advice -get a rear wheel mounted cyclocomputer that can read cadence - it will help immensely with keeping workouts steady and help ou track your progress. Cheers!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Solid trainer, April 25, 2012
By kes
I've had this product for almost a year and have put 1500 miles on the unit. This thing is very consistent in increasing resistance with speed. I would recommend applying some grease to the large aluminum threads that you screw into to hold the axle. I change bikes for me and the wife about every other day and its holding up nicely. You will definitely need a sweat "thong" for your bike and a towel or mat on the floor. A large fan with a remote(can purchase remote power strip at Home improvement store).

I have tried using Spin videos, doing my own thing, watching TV but have found only one program that I can use with an indoor trainer that keeps me motivated, that is TrainerRoad.com software. If you plan on doing ANY indoor training on the bike check out that software, its by far the best thing I've done for my training and it works perfectly with this trainer. All you need is the cadence/speed senor plus HR monitor strap and they can determine what your power output is based on those values. What a deal for $10 month!

So, buy this trainer, get the Garmin GSC10 sensor, Ant+ HR monitor strap, and subscribe to TrainerRoad. You be well on your way to training with Power!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Very good trainer, January 30, 2012
By AA (Ottawa, ON)
I needed a trainer in Ottawa, Canada for the snowy cold winter days. I did some research after I decided to buy one. I did not want to go for expensive rock and roll. but other options were kinectic buy kurt (fluid) or cycleops fluid 2. Finally bought this Kinetic by Kurt and enjoying its ride. Had to replace the bike skewer with the one that came with Kinetic package.

1. It is quiet.
2. Does not get hot.
3. Gives me very close to ride on the road.
4. Solid well built.

I would not recommend buying thong or riser block/ring or mat. like other people mentioned, can use any objects/book to raise the front wheel.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice piece of gear, December 31, 2011
By Rod R
I have about 15 hours on my new Kurt Kinetic Road Machine and I couldn't be happier. It is real quality piece of gear and it deserves to take up a prominent position in my basement rec room. Coupled with a Vittoria Zaffiro tire makes it much quieter than I expected. Mixed with my black bike, the red trainer tire, and this bright green machine really is a sight for sore eyes... so homely its beautiful.

By William Ernzen
This was consistent with the other reivews I read. It was easy to install and very solidly constructed. I've used it the last couple of mornings and have been very pleased with the stability and low-noise of the unit. I have been able to use it early in the morning without waking up the family, which is a huge bonus for me. I forsee a great winter of riding indoors while watching the snow out the window.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Newbie Biker, October 15, 2011
By E. Z.
After doing alot of research, I chose to purchase this trainer for "rehab" reasons. I have not been a regular rider, but felt this would be a great way to get to know my cannondale road bike without embarrassing myself in the great big outdoors. I love the way the trainer purrs, I feel very stable on it and get a great workout. It was very easy to set up, and I am glad to have something I can stash when not in use. Like some other users, rather than buying the fancy riser, I just stuck a towel underneath the front wheel to level the bike, and it doesn't slide around. I have the trainer height on the #2 setting, which has my tire 3/4" from the floor. Works great!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Fantastic Purchase, October 13, 2011
By M
The Kinetic by Kurt Road Machine was a fantastic purchase. It is very quiet, it doesn't wake anyone else up in my house when riding at ~250W. I can have a comfortable conversation when riding with someone sitting next to me. It is built solid and the resistance unit doesn't get hot even after an hour, just warm to the touch for me (when riding in ambient temp of ~78F). I have had no problems with the spindles staying tight in the holders.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  excelent, October 6, 2011
By TheLoneWolf
this is a great unit. takes away all my excuses to not exercise. i do highly suggest tho that if you are gonna use this with a mountain bike that you change your treaded tire and get a trainer tire made for bike trainers or a smooth tire of some sort because the tread on a mountain bike tire makes it sound like a chainsaw. if your in the market for a trainer, fluid trainers are the best for a real world simulation, and the Kurt kinetic is a leak proof design so you won't have the headaches that come with some of the other shaft driving o ring sealed units.

You don't believe me ? Try it !

With my powercranks, this my best investment for many years.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Incredible Indoor Trainer, January 16, 2012
By Voice of Reason (Utah)
I did some research online and finally decided on this trainer. All I can say is it is awesome! I've been using it through the winter months and I can't believe how nice it is. It was easy to set up. Took only a few minutes to have the trainer set up and the bike attached. The stability is really nice. I never feel like the bike has any potential to fall or become unbalanced. It is extremely easy to adjust the resistance. I can set it so that as I use my gears it feels anywhere from pretty easy to simulating a very nice climb without changing the resistance on the trainer. I get a serious burn just like on the road and can get a great workout. I've never used any other trainer so I can't compare, but it would be hard to imagine anything working better. It is also surprisingly quiet. I can listen to music or watch TV with the volume at normal levels without a problem. I would highly recommend this trainer ro anyone.
