The Giro Skyla Sport Bike Helmetfor women is constructed with in-mold technology that fuses a tough outer microshell to the helmet's EPS foam liner. The fusion process reinforces areas around vents and ribs, making the helmet lighter, cooler and tougher. The Skyla utilizes Giro's Acu Dial system, which combines single-handed adjustment with a full-fit band for a quick, sure fit. This Giro helmet features a snap-fit visor, and 20 vents that allow cool, fresh air in and stale, warm air out. The Skyla sport helmet comes in Giro's Universal Fit Women UW size (50-57cm), carefully sculpted and size-specific to simplify the fitting process. Giro's Skyla helmet is a lightweight 270 grams, and complies with U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's safety standards for bicycle helmets. Helmet Tips--You Should Always... - Wear a helmet when you ride
- Wear your helmet low in the front to protect the forehead
- Fasten your buckle and tighten your chin strap
- Check your adjustments every time you wear your helmet
- Inspect your helmet regularly for signs of wear or damage
- Wear a helmet designed for your activity
About Giro Working late nights in his garage, designer/bike racer Jim Gentes created the first lightweight adult cycling helmet in 1985. Friends at NASA helped tune the final helmet shape and vent placement, and the result was the Giro Prolight, a helmet that was better looking than traditional designs while offering a superior fit and still met the industry's toughest safety standards. Plus, it was half the weight of traditional helmets. Since then, Giro has advanced its helmets, many of which have set the standards for styling, function, and innovation for progressive, performance-oriented riders on dirt, pavement, and snow. Giro helmets are worn by millions of riders, cyclists, skiers, and snowboarders around the world. Young-bloods and old-timers; hard-cores, heshers, and hipsters; rookies, experts, and a few regular Joes too--in fact, pretty much anyone that appreciates superior fit and function, cutting edge styling, and the very best ideas you get in a helmet.

Great entry helmet, but its small so check sizing carefully, July 23, 2008
By Steven (United States)

Having owned many Giro helmets, and currently having a high end model, this is an excellent Giro for the price. The expensive models really give you huge vent openings, but this one is pretty good. The styling is excellent and the dial fit adjustment is comparable to the RocLoc system of the higher models. If you need a nice bike helmet at a good price, this is certainly a great choice.
However, make sure you measure your head! This is listed as a universal fit Womens model, which is a total joke. I bought this for my 3 year old daughter, who has a head that measures more than mid-way in the fit range, and it fits her great. On the other hand, my wife who wears a medium Giro Monza, a not-uncommon size for many women, could never fit into this helmet and it almost looks like she's trying to fit a kids helmet on her head. Obviously this will fit many women, but don't read "universal sizing" and order without measuring your head. The Skyla fit range is 50 to 57 cm. In comparison, a medium Giro helmet is 55-59cm (Roc-loc limits) because it also has a larger shell. By the way, the Giro Flume children's specific model has the same fit range of the Skyla of 50-57cm, and the Giro Rodeo toddler helmet is 50-55 cm. When a Womens helmet has almost the same range as a toddler helmet, you know Giro is trying to limit the number of women who will fit into this helmet, forcing many to move up to the more expensive models that come in sizes; and there are some good reasons to buy the expensive models like fit, Roc-Loc system quick adjustability, and increased air flow.
But if your head fits, its a great helmet at a good budget-friendly price.

Lightweight and comfy, October 22, 2006
By Buena Onda (Israel)

I bought this helmet in white gold. It's a great helmet, very comfortable and light-weight. I was excited to find a women's helmet that fit me perfectly (many unisex helmets are too big and require adding lots of extra padding).
The flowers are barely visible on the white gold version, but it still looks nice. My only complaint is that when I tried to remove the snap-on visor the shell felt like it was going to break so I just left the visor on.
It's a great value for the price, I really don't even notice when I'm wearing it and I use my bike almost every day.

I bought this helment primarily because I needed something and it was inexpensive. I was really surprised that it fit so well and it is so sturdy. In fact it is so comfortable that I often forget I have it on. I highly recommend this helmet

Rider Recommendations, April 16, 2008
By Photo Jo (Barksdale AFB, LA)

I went to the 2007 RAGBRAI (Register's Annual Bike Ride Across Iowa) as a support crew member, meaning I did the cyclists grocery shopping, set up their tents, that kind of thing. I was just starting to get into the cycling scene, and wanted to observe the different brands of cycling gear the team was using. Most of the guys owned Giro helmets, I was actually overwhelmed by how many of them had them. I had a conversation about the brand with one of the riders over the campfire and he sung its praises. I was skeptical, until the next day one of my teammates wrecked, pretty badly, and he was covered with scrapes and scratches, his helmet was wrecked, but he didn't sustain any head injuries, thank god. He walked away with not even a headache. The next day he went out and bought the same exact helmet again.
When mine came in, I was excited to try it out. The female designs are really cute, and are incredibly adjustable. I have a pretty big head for a female, and I was skeptical that it would fit my melon, but sure enough, if you crank that dial in the back long enough, it will fit. The numerous air slits are awesome too, as it lets your body heat out through your scalp. The only downside to that is you should probably wear a light bandana to avoid tan lines in your scalp. Even if you have long hair. As far as I can tell, the visor isn't removable, which wasn't a selling point for me at first, but it's about the perfect size, it doesn't get in your line of vision, and its just long enough to shade your eyes from the harsh sun. The helmet itself is also incredibly light, it doesn't weigh your head down, and half the time I feel like I'm not wearing anything on my head. I can't wait to road test it at this year's ride. Til then I'll be training with it.

Snug but secure, October 6, 2008
By Momma on a quest (Salem, OR)
|

I've got a small head, so finding a bike helmet that doesn't fit like a five gallon bucket is a bit of a challenge, but this fit fine for the most part.
My only complaints are that it's a real pia to get the straps adjusted right (although the back circumference type adjustment is a snap), it was really irritating the top of my head (solved by using all three of the extra pads on the crown of the helmet to keep it from rubbing my apparently non-aerodynamic head raw) and the cheek straps lay a little weird.
Overall... I didn't notice it beyond the first few moments on my bike, which is saying a lot, because I hate helmets, so it does the job, and really, for the price, it's hard to be picky. The graphics are nice, it catches attention on the road, and after getting it fitted right its fairly easy to snap on and off without losing skin.
I'd give it a 3 stars for comfort and 4 stars for overall value. If you've got a small head that's mostly round, this would absolutely be the helmet for you. For us egg heads... it'd be nice if Giro threw in a couple more sticky pads.

good helmet, good price, May 24, 2008

I chose this helmet for the price. It fits well and is easy to see out of. The back of the helmet allows for a ponytail to come out the back. I haven't had to put it to the test yet and hopefully won't, but so far it's working great.

Fits Great, February 1, 2010
By Phillips Family (Texas)
|
|
My head (measured around where my eyebrows are) is 21 inches. This helmet is too snug on the smallest setting but too big on the largest settings, so it fits me right in the mid-range. It looks pretty well made. It is not a top of the line helmet by any means but is a great buy for the price. I would not try to skimp on a helmet and I feel comfortable with the quality. Plus, it matches my bike.

Such a nice helmet, but too snug on my head. I think my head is just an average size (?), however, on the largest adjustment, it was too tight, so I had to return it.

Saved my head, August 19, 2009
By Mary C. Bogdan (Harrisburg, PA)

I just wanted to let everyone know that this Giro Skyla helmet possibly saved my life. I was in a bad bike accident a little over a month ago where I flew over my handlebars and got pretty banged up. My head hit pretty hard but luckily because I was wearing a helmet, I had no major head injury. I did have a broken arm, a sore neck, and was covered with cuts and bruises but thanks to this Skyla helmet, my head was OK. It stayed right in place during impact, thank the Lord above. I just wanted to highly recommend this helmet for safety. Please don't forget to wear your helmet if you are out on your bike.

Not as comfortable as I'd like, March 24, 2011
By Teena
|
|
Three stars for looks and value. I wanted to like this helmet, and if I weren't as into my cycling, I'm sure it would get a 5-star rating from me. As I find with all the sports I'm into, the high end equipment costs more for a reason - my ski gear, my kayak gear, my bikes and accessories... all the good stuff is worth the high price in terms of comfort and performance and enjoyment of the sport! I used to go for the inexpensive option first, but I am heading out tomorrow to test the expensive helmets to find one made for comfort and for road biking - this helmet is not for a road biker because of the visor (which I removed) and the thickness of the helmet across the forehead - on a road bike you will be tilting your head back to see ahead of you, and it can cause neck and shoulder pain. The dial adjuster in the back is not my favorite - it's a hassle to adjust when it's on your head and with gloves on. Also I REALLY don't like the chin strap clasp that gets caught up in the collar of my cycling rain jacket - it is almost dangerous the way it hinders head movement.

Snug but love the color and price, February 2, 2009

I was Leary to buy a helmet on line with one size fits all sizing. I found this to be a little on the snug side but not so much that I'd bother returning it. I do have "helmet head" for a good 30 min. after wearing. I love the color and pattern. so nice to have something girlie without it being barbie pink! price was lower than anything i found in sports / bike stores.

Giro Skyla Sport Helmet -- Met all my requirements, July 27, 2008
By nievki (minnesota)
|
|
I bought this helment for a silly reason. I recently purchased a brand new expensive bicycle. I decided I wanted helmet that matched the bicycle colors which are teal and dark grey (no red). This is the only helmet I could find anywhere that was teal! I figured I would buy the helmet because of the color and hope the rest worked out.
I was very excited about the price and that Amazon shipped it free.
When the helmet was delivered, I was really excited to see that it was the EXACT color of the bicycle. Well, now that I had the right color, I figured I better find out how it fit!
The fit is fantastic. There is an easily adjustable band inside the helmet that you tighten or loosen until you feel you have a comfortable fit. The straps that come down over your ears and then clip under your chin is somewhat difficult to use. I had to shorten it quite a bit and it took some effort. This could possibly be a safety feature to make sure the helmet does not become loose.
The helmet is very lightweight and I don't even feel like I have it on. It also keeps my head cool. I used last weekend which was incrediby hot and although my forehead was sweaty, my head wasn't. I also wore it today after I took a shower and washed my hair. I put a bandana scarf on my head because I didn't want my wet hair in direct contact with the inside of the helmet. I didn't have any problem doing this and my head still stayed cool. It was 90 with 80% humidity.
The visor does keep the sun off my face somewhat, but I still wore sunglasses. As for quality or longevity, I don't know enough to comment on that.
Well, even you don't need to buy this for the color, if you want a comfortable priced-right helmet I suggest this one.

Pretty flowers, July 14, 2008
By Tina Taylor
|
|
I bought this helmet upon getting back into biking and, after fiddling with the settings, find that it's light, comfortable and responsible. My first choice would be no helmet but, since I want my brains inside my skill, I wear the one with the teal and red flowers.
One thing-I don't have a huge head (hat size 7 1/8") and on the very largest setting the helmet makes a mark on my forehead on longer rides. If you have a larger head than that...look for another helmet.

Great Fit, July 2, 2008
By redcat72 (Laurel, MD)
|
|
I purchased the purple version of this helmet. It's a very attractive color. As the other reviews have said, this helmet has a great fit. It is very lightweight, but feels sturdy enough to protect you in a fall. I think it is great price for the quality. It keeps your head cool enough, and prevents the sweat from getting into your eyes too. The front lip doesn't really block the sun, which I thought it might do. Only suggestion would be to make the straps a little more streamline and flat. Otherwise, very pleased with this purchase!

Very nice helmet, March 22, 2008
By Midwest birdwatcher (SW Missouri)

Sized for women with a dial adjustment at the back to insure a perfect fit. So light weight you quickly forget you're wearing it, cool and comfortable. Nice colors and designs available. The one design change I'd make is in the chin strap - the clip can painfully pinch your skin if the straps aren't loose enough.

second helmet, March 25, 2007
By Suzanne (CA)
|
|
I bought my first one about 2 years ago, and the piece that your head fits in broke recently. I liked it because it's super light. I wear on average 2-4 times a week. I'm not sure if this piece of plastic breaking has to do with me and how I "treated it" or what. It's actually very thin.
What is the lifespan of these things? It'd be nice to know. I'm buying another one, but frankly I'd rather buy something with a little more quality and lifespan. If such things exist. I'm willing to pay more as well and just don't know if you get what you pay for or not. Inferior products are frustrating!

Life saver, October 7, 2010
By Rina Ikubura

This helmet performed perfectly during a recent bike accident. I went over the handlebars due to a front tire lockup. This happened so quickly I did not have time to react (ie. attempt to break my fall). Luckily I had my Giro Indicator on when I landed on my head! The shell was scuffed up however it was not cracked. The styrofoam absorbed the impact and did break up as you would expect. Even though I suffered multiple injuries (fractured clavicle, road rash, bruising, etc) I did not even have a headache after the crash. This helmet works. Thank you Giro.

I got this helmet in and I love it! I ordered the ice blue/white Eleanor birds (what a name for a color!) and it is really cute! Very light weight and fits snuggly to your head. Definitely designed for a woman sized head! I like that it can adjust in the back (with a little crank/turn thingy) to make it a perfect fit.

looks good, lightweight, but weird fit, July 26, 2011
By maya (Botson MA)
|
|
My head measures 21.75 inches, and at the largest setting the skyla did fit me. However, it did feel a bit too snug. Specifically, the front part was constricting my temples such that there was mild constant pressure which increased when I grit my teeth. Additionally, the helmet was too snug such that it sits too low on my head and prevents airflow. Thus, after wearing it for about 15-20mins, I had a slight headache and a sweaty head/forehead.
I really wanted to like this helmet, since it is so sleek, compact and lightweight. Significant difference from my old one. Great value for the price! However, the fit was way too small. I ended up buying a universal fit Giro rift - which is very comfortable! The skyla is definitely for smaller heads than mine - it can even fit a toddler at the smallest setting (I tried it on my 15-month old and it fit him!)

Comfortable and stylish, July 5, 2011

I was looking at new helmets since the one that I had I bought when I was a kid and the sparkly red was not a subtle helmet! This helmet is so comfortable and you can change the size of the helmet in an instant! I tried one on at EMS and then looked on Amazon. It wasn't cheaper but I was able to get the black with gold paisley that they didn't offer. It was much better than plain black or white with flowers! Definitely worth the $40!

An OK helmet, costs 1/4 of the helmet that I really like, July 4, 2011
By Verona (Portland, OR USA)
|
|
I had a Skyla for 5+ years and have been very happy with it. It lasted through 3 bikes in 3 different states. (Right now I ride a hybrid for commuting and a road bike for long rides.)
Even though I never had a spill in my Skyla, it was well beyond the recommended time period for replacement, and the more I shopped around, the more I appreciated my Skyla. I looked pretty seriously at the more road-oriented helmets and I just can't convince myself it's worth paying 3-4x more, although I really liked the Garneau X-Lite. Maybe I'd notice an increase in ventilation, but I've never felt overheated in the Skyla (this might be of more concern to those who live in warmer climates) so it really just came down to aesthetics, and really, I'm never going to look at myself in the helmet again after I step away from the mirror in the store.
The only thing that kept me from getting a Skyla again (I ended up getting the Bell Vela) is the currently available patterns. The Skyla's this year are just plain black, plain white, or some awful, busy pattern. The Giro Flume (Youth helmet, same size range & price) didn't have anything more inspiring, either.
I saw a lot of complaints that the sizing was too small on this, and perhaps they are sized more towards petite women (I'm 5'2" and I have plenty of extra room) I'm personally very glad the sizing on this is so small, since the "universal adult" fit looks huge on me, as do the S/M sizes. It's not until the true Small sizes (which are only on the pricey models) that the helmets start to look right on me. The "universal women's" size (like the Skyla) doesn't look as great as the true small, but it's a close second.

I love this helmet!, June 22, 2011
By Cate Rowan, fantasy romance author (USA)
|
|
I have a small head--I wear 6 5/8 - 6 7/8. My petite noggin is also a long oval shape, so I've had a hard time getting helmets to fit, including horseback riding and ski helmets. This Giro fit like a dream.
I had to rethread the straps (someone messed up at the factory and left one twisted), but that took all of two minutes. Once I had everything adjusted (instructions given in the manual), the dial at the back snugged the helmet nicely against my head. When I tested the fit by moving the visor gently, my forehead skin moved with it, and when I undid the buckle and leaned over and shook my head, the helmet didn't immediately fall off. I do wish the straps were a little more comfortable--the straps don't lay perfectly flat against my ears and the side of my face--but that's a minor complaint.
Does my head look like a white mushroom with it on? Yep. Welcome to safety helmets. But the fit is excellent and I'm very pleased with this purchase.

This helmet saved my life!, June 6, 2011
By ellasmom

I bought this helmet about a month ago to replace the Bell helmet that I had been wearing mountain biking. As most of the reviewers said, it did run a bit small, but it fit my head just fine. I've been wearing it for the past month, and it is much more breathable than my last helmet and nice and light on my head. Yesterday, we rode a more technical trail and I wiped out and hit the back of my head on a large rock on the side of the trail. If I didn't have this helmet on, I may not be here typing this review! After the crash, I took off the helmet and inspected it. Other than a few indentations on the back, it held up and saved my head from serious injury. I'm buying a replacement one today.

Excellent helmet., June 5, 2011

I have a small head, and this helmet actually fits. The adjustment dial is very easy to use. Like others have said, the straps are the hardest to adjust. They take a little time and patience, but once done, they are comfortable.
Once adjusted, this helmet is very comfortable and light. I actually am not aware of it while riding.

Light, Easy to adjust, and Comfortable, May 10, 2011
By JTS (Madison, WI)

Just got this bike helmet and I love it. I think that it fits perfectly. I probably have an average sized head, it's easy to adjust in the back by turning the small knob in the back of the helmet. I appreciate that it feels light on top of my head, so you just sort of forget that you are wearing it (especially because I don't really like wearing a helmet, but know that I should).

Very Cute and Pretty Comfortable...At first I thought it was too small, May 1, 2011
By Angela

I just got this helmet. When I first put it on I thought it was way too small. So I tried adjusting the wheel in the back. I loosened it as far as I thought it would go. It felt a bit better but still felt too small. I tired to adjust the wheel more but it would not turn. I was very disappointed since my head measurement was just under 22 inches and it should have fit. I had already decided that I would have to return it and started to research other helmets. While I was putting it back into the box I turned the wheel some more and realized that I could still adjust it to a much larger size. I guess that with it on my head it would not adjust as large as it could go. Not only was it larger it was too large! I fiddled with it some more and got it too a very comfortable fit. The straps do sit at an awkward angle. I adjusted the strap using the adjusters near the ear and managed to get the straps to lay correctly around my face. Overall I would say it is a very good helmet for the price. I barely notice that it is on my head now that I have adjusted it properly. You just have to do a lot of adjusting to get the right fit.

Giro Skyla helmet, November 19, 2010
By dm
|

I bought this helmet for my girlfriend, she loves the graphics. It's well built, very good strap adjustment system, and has a decent amount of vents. Be sure & take the time to adjust the straps so they're not pinching your ears or it'll be uncomfortable, easy to do just take the time to set it up right. As others have mentioned it does seem a little small, luckily she's got an average sized head I guess and despite having thick long hair the helmet just fits. If you think you've got a slightly larger than average sized melon or a very round vs. oval shape it probably won't fit right. Only gave it 4 stars because the 'Universal Size' description isn't really true. Amazon had the best price.

Good helmet, May 12, 2010
By basset luver (New Jersey)

I've never worn a helmet in my life, but this seems to be a very good one. I chose it based on the well-known manufacturer and price. they usually make high-end helmets of superior quality, so I bought the one I could afford. It works well, alittle hard to fit at first, you have to play with it until it fits just right. but I feel much safer now and don't worry about a head injury if I fall off. I think everyone should wear a helmet just to be safe.

Fits Great and So Cool, January 15, 2010
By J. Rodney Clements (Ansonville, NC)

I was nervous to buy this because of the reviews that said it was so small. I couldn't resist, because of the graphics, and bought it anyway. I bought the white with pink flowers, there's red on it too.. which matches great with my bike. It's not small. I had to dial it in a little. It is really, REALLY comfy! Would buy another one tomorrow if I had a wreck and trashed it. Oh, the straps are a nice light brown with a pink stripe too. Adorable helmet. - Danielle (just starting to bike and loving it.)

High quality, cost-effective, and looks good, October 27, 2009
By Grad student (Boston, MA)

I recently started commuting by bike and needed a new helmet. This one has been perfect as a commuting and recreational biking helmet:
-Good quality, light construction
-Well-ventilated, better than most helmets at this price point
-Visor blocks glare
-Comfortable and adjustable
-Design that I picked on the basis of price (it was discounted) actually turned out to be cute in person

and it was within rage.
Good looking helmet at a great price.

Great product. It was recommended by the bike shop I went to. They ordered it for me and after 6 weeks with still no helmet, I canceled the order and ordered it through Amazon. I got it in three days. Have been very pleased with it.

Very nice helmet for my 8 year old daughter, May 10, 2009
By book reader (Los Angeles, CA USA)
|
|
I read the reviews that this fit snuggly... thinking I had a smallish head, I got it anyway but unfortunately it was too small for me. I was very pleased to find that it has a dial to expand or reduce the helmet size. I tightened it and it fits my 8 year old daughter better than any other helmet ever has. It doesn't tilt to the side like so many others we've tried. As she grows, I can just move the expander wheel. It's pretty and she loves it. So this was a good purchase for us.

Fantastic helmet!, September 7, 2008
By Sara L. Blacklock (Whiteman AFB, MO)

Not only is this helmet beautiful to look at, it is very functional. Thanks to the easy to adjust straps and one-touch tightening system it fits perfectly. It is also light and maintains good airflow. Although the visor doesn't do much in the way of keeping the sun out of your eyes it does help a bit when you're riding in the rain. I LOVE this helmet!

The Giro Skyla Bike Helmet is a light comfortable helmet. I have never worn a helmet before and was hesitant since I am not fond of wearing hats. This helmet truly fits the bill. I barely know that I am wearing it, yet it is sturdy and well-cushioned.

great helmet, not onesize fitsall, November 5, 2011
By z

|
I think Giro makes a fantastic helmet. I bought this one thinking it would fit with a ponytail, etc., because of the "onesize fits all" description. Just not the case--the helmet is an uncomfortably tight squeeze. So, I gave it to a friend and she loves it.
Again, great helmet, just watch it if you've got a lot of hair or a large-ish head.

I had the giro transfer helmet for many years (and a cross country move) before it cracked. I decided to try a new helmet this go around and chose the skyla. After side by side comparison with the transfer I can't really say there is a difference between the two. That's not a horrible thing, I really liked the transfer - both helmets are a great deal and I feel comfortable both commuting and training in my skyla. Its nothing fancy, but looks fairly stylish and is comfortable.

Great helmet, May 4, 2012
By Danielle
|
|
I read a lot of the reviews saying the helmet is too small for most heads. I measured my head & it's the largest cm circumference listed for this, so I hesitantly ordered the helmet. I had to adjust the back plastic piece a little looser, but after that it fits perfectly. I've used it a handful of times now, and it's very comfortable and secure. I think it's a great helmet.

Mom's Bicycle Helmet, April 3, 2012
By Clare
|
|
I like the look of this helmet but it's a bit too tight, and (pardon the humor) I don't have a fat head (hah!). I have to remove some of the padding to make it work, so maybe it should be manufactured a bit larger than it is now. In any event, I love the color scheme of black with gold and gold chin strap!

The best part about this helmet is the visor. It really helps to keep the sun out of my eyes. This is a very comfortable helmet. I have a very small head and this fits me perfectly. I bought the white/lime paisley and it is just girly enough without being over the top. It is easy to clean and the straps are very easy to use. Love this helmet!

I like the helmet, however, I ran into the same problem just like many previous buyers- Too small. Maybe the product manufacture should sized it to S, M, L, XL, that could prevent the same issue.

By ahsa

Love the color and style! Read a bunch of reviews online looking for the best moderately-priced women's helmet and chose this one. The only reason that I did not give it 5 stars is due to the difficulty in adjusting the straps and the Acu-Dial...though this may be because the helmet is relatively new. It's really not a big deal though, I'm very pleased with the helmet otherwise. It fits my head perfectly!

Satisfied, July 2, 2010
By Dr. E (Brooklyn NY)

Good fit. Light on the head. Would of given it a 5 but it is hard to adjust the straps once you adjust them initially. I had it on when I fell, first time in 30 years of riding. Problem was that I hit the pavement with my face not my head. The good thing is that the helmet stayed on perfectly, during the impact. It would of protected me well if I fell the other way and that is what it is all about.
