Inertia is important, January 1, 2008
By R. Boutros
|
|
A trainer is better if it closely replicates an actual cycling experience. Hence, the graduating complexity and cost of fan, magnetic and fluid drive trainers. The more you pay, the closer the experience is to replicating the inertia of what happens in a real ride. You want the trainer to feel as if it takes more exertion to get up to speed, but also want it to "coast", when you stop pedaling. This trainer is a mag drive, and does a good overall job, but doesn't coast well. I find myself pedaling all the time, as if I were hill climbing. That's OK for getting exercise, but not good for getting in a sustained ride. Those brief periods of coasting help the muscles recover and allow longer ride time. I could stop entirely for short periods, but that's not how I want to ride. I do use the gears to vary pedaling speed, but can't use the high gear and standing to vary the working muscles enough on the trainer; the resistance doesn't go high enough for that. I haven't tried a fluid drive, so don't know if it would be much better. I suggest trying a trainer somewhere before buying. All said and done, I would probably buy this same trainer again, as it is solidly built and with a smooth tire on the bike, quiet enough. Now, if someone put a 20 lb weight on the spinner...

A great ride during the cool weather, October 18, 2006
By Scott D. Estes (LaGrange, Kentucky USA)
|
|
I just got my CycleOps Mag indoor trainer this week and got my first ride in tonight. I have only been riding for about 6 months but I am at a point where when I dont ride I just dont feel good. With the days getting shorter and cooler getting time to ride after work was becoming impossible. Add to that after school activities for the kids and there just wasnt enough time in the day. I figure this will allow me to get some ride time in during the evenings without having to rush other activities. Plus I can still ride on the weekends if the weather is bad.
Setup was easy. The bike fits well (I have a Bianchi road bike) and feels stable. The adjustable resisitance allows me to ride at a good pace and get a good ride in while watching my favorite shows on the Tivo.
All in all I am completely satisfied with the trainer and recommend it as a way to stay in shape during the cold weather months.

Good workout, February 7, 2008
By Mike (Philadelphia, PA United States)
|
|
I've owned this for about two weeks, and have used it several times already. Assembly took about 20 minutes and was very easy. In the two weeks I've had this, I agree that using it is noisy, but I believe it is due to the tread on my mountain bike tire. I'm going to try switching to a smoother road tread to see if the noise decreases. Either way, I'm very happy to have bought this as I've already lost weight and am able to ride for a longer time at a higher speed than I was with the first few uses.
I recommend buying a block for the front wheel, too. Not for balance, but to level the height of the front wheel with that of the back wheel.

Good product, November 11, 2007
By S. Kwong (Minneapolis)

I'm not a hard core cyclist but I like to bike to stay in shape. It creates a little noise but it's not bad at all. This trainer works really well and it's really nice for the price. I'd recommend getting the stabalizer for the front tire to keep everything sturdy and to lift up the front end.

Great trainer, last one you will need to buy., January 14, 2009
By Gen (Dallas, ya'll.)
|

I spent well over $200 for this item in a regular bike store, as of today, Amazon has the best price.
It's a solid build, folds up nearly flat when not in use (a big plus for me with small space!), holds the back wheel steady and doesn't produce a huge amount of noise.
The guy at the store set it up for me, it took under 5 minutes. I folded it up and brought it home. Now I use my bike indoors everyday.
Make sure you don't overadjust the tension, or it will create too much heat. Just use your gears to adjust resistance. Other than that, everything is pretty much as simple as it gets.
I really reccomend it.

Smooth but loud, and with limited resistance, August 10, 2010
By gronlandic_edit
|
|
I have owned several mag trainers over the last decade and I have no doubt that this is the best one on the market as far as sturdiness, but it is not without its limitations. Briefly, like all mag trainers, it is still loud and it doesn't generate a lot of resistance. I have never used a fluid trainer before and can't afford one, but if it actually is significantly quieter and you have the money I'd recommend it, particularly if you live in an apartment or shared dwelling.
Here are the reasons why it compares favorably with all the other mag trainers I've owned: (1) It was easy to set up. I have read some reviews to the contrary and I simply can't agree. I think it took me all of 10 minutes. I suppose if you have never used one before and seen how the resistance unit is meant to fit and function, it could be less intuitive. (2) It feels sturdy, with no noticeable rocking back and forth, even when standing and/or applying quite a bit of force. Unlike some trainers I've owned, I don't feel afraid that I'm going to go rocketing across the room if I try to stand up and sprint. (3) Many of the surfaces I use it on are slightly uneven, but by extending and/or shortening the "feet" as needed (done simply by twisting them in or out) it is quite easy to make the trainer level and stable. In these three respects it performs exactly as expected.
That said, this one didn't meet my admittedly high (by virtue of the price and the manufacturer's reputation) hopes, in two key respects. (1) Make no mistakes about it, mag trainers are loud and this one is no exception. While spinning at low resistance and high cadence the vibration and noise are tolerable, about as loud as, say, a stand mixer; but when turning the big ring at about 70 RPMs in an enclosed space -- my 1 bedroom apartment -- it throws off enough noise that I need to turn the pumping house music on my closely fitting headphones all the way up to the max to drown it out. Using it on a weeknight -- the purpose for which I bought it -- is absolutely out of the question without probably drawing complaints from my upstairs and downstairs neighbors. It's perhaps 5-10% quieter than mag trainers I owned 3-5 years ago, but still not quiet enough that I would feel comfortable using it in an apartment without concrete walls, in a single-dwelling house, or in a basement or garage. (2) It just doesn't generate very much resistance. I am not a particularly strong cyclist, but even on the highest setting, I have to put it in the fourth or third hardest gearing to generate enough resistance to get a zone 4-5 workout while spinning at 70 RPM. I'm not sure I could even get the resistance up high enough to really "grind," i.e., 50-60 RPMs. It doesn't matter so much for me right now but if I got significantly stronger I could see it really being an issue.
I don't know how much I'll end up using this. If I had the extra money and knew that a fluid trainer would be significantly quieter, I'd go that way instead.

Excellent for home-training, August 6, 2007
By C. Miller (Denver CO)
|
|
I've used this training for a triathlon during the cold winter months - or any day with bad weather - it's easy to set up and take down, and you can adjust the resistance to whatever level you need. One word of advice - find something to entertain you while you ride, because without outdoor scenery it can be a bit boring (I found headphones or movies to be most effective).

Very Smart Cycle Trainer, January 9, 2007
By Dani (Madison, WI)

I purchased this cycleops a few months back and just love it. It is perfect for winter bike riding and fits right in my bedroom. It is not heavy nor is it hard to put together. I am not a professional biker I just do it for a little exercise. This is as good as going out and buying a exercise bike but much cheaper!

Excellent, nuff said!!!!, January 15, 2008
By Jamie Biggs (Milwaukee, Wisconsin)

This has to be one of the best investments I've made, makes Wisconsin winters easier to deal with. It's smooth, quite, a snap to use and I still have plenty have resistance to grow into. Also came with a very nice training video that will challenge you. In fact I think I will order more of these training videos. 5stars from me...I'm no novice I have years of biking under my belt, road and mountain. Get it!!

CycleOps Mag Trainer, January 27, 2010
By H. Clark
|
|
I bought this and ended up returning it and buying the Fluid 2. The trainer served it's purpose. I bought the product for fitness - not training for anyting in particular. It created all the resistance I needed but I live in an apartment and the Mag trainer was entirely too loud. A workout is just not enjoyable when it sounds like you are in a wind tunnel. Definately glad I returned it and got the Fluid 2... world of difference!

Made by great company - very pleased with purchase, December 18, 2008

When I found out this trainer was made by Saris- the same company who made my bike rack I was sold. The quality of there products is great IMO and the lifetime warranty can't be beat. I did have some problems understanding some of the set up instructions but a quick call to there customer service department ( the number is at the bottom on the last page) had me up and running- so I did not take off points for this.
VERY happy to find out that I can adjust the resistance which my bicycle gears- which I was unaware of! The trainer does make a humming noise which is not bad at all even with my hybrid tires. I can still hear the television- but I do plan to purchase some slick tires since I plan to ride on this trainer all winter.

Excellent basement trainer, January 28, 2010
By C. Hollingshead (Washington, DC)
|
|
I think this product hits the right combination of price and performance. It's not road-like resistance, and it is not quiet. But it is not so loud that the sound gets through a pair of earbuds. And I can add as much or as little resistance as I like. Assembly is a snap, its not terribly heavy, it doesn't shift while in use, and a bigger guy/gal will feel comfortable balancing on it combined with the climbing/leveling block. If you want something quieter, dig $150 deeper, otherwise this should have all you need.

great product overall, December 1, 2007

assembles easy (may be difficult for some as instructions are not clear). must say that getting the riser block was definitely worth it. It is realitively quiet with a road tire but horrendous with an off road tire. Every effective and the DVD is a nice touch as well. i would recommend this easily to anyone cause i have already to much of my friends and family who were looking for an at home trainer

Impossible to set up, June 10, 2010
By Caryn Neumann (Columbus, OH United States)
|
|
Cycle Ops spent a lot of money developing the product then apparently scrimped on the instructions. Thanks a lot. After four hours of swearing and sweating, I am giving up on attaching my bike to the trainer. The instructions say: Lift up bike by the seatpost and position the left side of your bike skewer into the left cone. Pull down the quick release handle to capture the right side of your bike skewer. Adjust fixed cone by loosening the lock ring and turning cone as needed.
Sounds simple enough. But the skewer does not lock into the trainer and there is a gap on the other side. The result is that the bike falls out of the trainer. The instructions do not consider this as a possibility and there is no advice about what to do if you experience a problem. There is no phone number listed either to call for help. I would make another hole in the quick release handle if I had the tools.
Unless you are particularly mechanically inclined and have your own set of metal-working tools, find another trainer.

Solid basic trainer, April 16, 2010
By Cycles 67 (Oakland CA)
|
|
I should say first that this is my first trainer so I have no real basis of comparison to other models/makes. This is just my experience with the Cycleops Mag Trainer. I have had this trainer for about 6 months now and use it regularly (about 5 days a week). It was easy to assemble and it is easy to attach my bike to it. The trainer is solid and stable even for me at over 200 lbs. I use it in the basement of our house with my ipod so I am not as sensitive to noise as if I was in an apartment, with the ipod I can't hear the trainer. I'm sure there are quieter models out there, but I can't say I've tried them. As may be typical for mag trainers the resistance is not the smoothest getting up to speed, but once you are riding at your work-out pace its fine.
The trainer has been great for me since it rained alot in the fall and spring and I was not able to ride outside many days. It's also very convenient to be able to train at night, when I probably would'nt go to the gym or ride outside. It was an essential tool in training for my first double century in March. For the money I would definitely recommend it. I have had no issues so far.

Reliable Trainer, October 6, 2010
By theresa

|
I am so glad I purchased this trainer! As the mother of a newborn, it has allowed me to workout in view of my son; and as a former collegiate athlete who values pushing my body to its limits, it has allowed me to get back to the intensity of my workouts without biking long distances.
I purchased this particular model because it seemed like the cheapest version of the most reliable brand. Since I wasn't sure that working-out from home was really for me, I decided it best to stay on the cheaper side while still making a sound purchase. But overall I've been very impressed. It was easy to assemble, cycles smoothly, and though there was initially a bit of a squeaking sound, the sound seems to disappear the faster I ride and the more I use it; I don't even notice it any more. Those looking for a reliable indoor trainer, who don't need some of the special perks of the better and more expensive models will enjoy using this product.

I just finished my first ride on my mag trainer. This is my first trainer and it gave me a decent workout for the hour I rode it. The only negative that I have is the noise. This being my first trainer I have nothing to compare the noise to.

A wonderful product, September 18, 2009

I did a lot of research on indoor bicycle trainers and saw that this CycleOps was very popular and had all great reviews. I'm here to tell you it really is an amazing product. It is quiet and sturdy. Even with quick release tires it still holds the bike in place. My suggestion is to use tires that are not knobby and this trainer will almost be silent!

Very Good Trainer, June 7, 2010
By Louis (Kansas City, MO)
|
|
I sold my nearly 12 years old Cycleops mag trainer over the winter, and picked up this new model recently. The new one has noticably more resistance at the higher resistance setting than my old model did. Also, the price was significantly less, if I remember correctly (I think the 1998 model was in the neighborhood of $275). The extra skewer is a nice touch so I don't have to scratch up the black one that come with my road bike. The external cable shown in the above picture was not included in the box, so perhaps it is an option or generic picture. I hadn't really noticed it until now, several weeks later, anyway. The price was right, and the product works well. I also recommend the block for the front wheel to level the bike. Otherwise, you'll be riding constantly downhill. With the free Amazon shipping, this is a very good deal in my book.

Easy to use and store, March 19, 2009
By M. Emery (Oregon)
|
|
This winter has been colder than usual and I missed many days riding because of that. I decided to purchase a trainer so I wouldn't completely miss out on the physical part of my rides. I wanted to make use of my existing bicycle and not have another big thing hanging out in my garage. This trainer works well for me - not too expensive, easy to set up (the written instructions aren't great), takes little space when not in use and it does give me a way to get a bit of a workout. I do still find it extremely boring to ride inside.

Unacceptable for road bikes, December 21, 2011
By ccp
|
|
Caution, be aware this product requires you to REPLACE the skewer with their cheap supplied skewer. If you have invested in all high end components, this is not acceptable. Otherwise, you will be completely rebuilding your ride between indoor and outdoor (better not hope you get invited to a group ride the same day your bike is mounted on this piece of crap). Look for equipment that is more flexible in adjustment so that you truly have a quick in and out of the trainer.

CycleOps Bike Stand, February 16, 2011
By jimmike
|
|
The bike stand arrived a couple of days after I ordered it and was easily assembled (under 10 minutes). I was using it 5 minutes later. It is relatively quiet but if you are watching TV, the volume needs to be increased. I use it 4-5 days per week maybe 30-45 minutes at a time. The bike can be removed easily and is ready for outdoor use immediately. You have to get off the bike to adjust the tension but I set it where I want it before my workout.

Very noisy if you have a mountain bike, December 30, 2010
By cam498 (New York, NY)
|
|
I bought the CycleOps Mag trainer because it seemed like the best-quality product in the "mag" trainer category, as compared to the cheaper alternatives by Schwinn, etc. And I had read in the reviews that it would be slightly noisier with mountain bike tire tread; however, when I tried it out myself, it was extremely loud. Part of this had to do with the flooring in my NYC apartment, which seemed to act as an amplifier for the vibration the cycling caused. But because of this, the window and heating pipes began to vibrate, too, and it felt, and sounded like, I was riding a clothes dryer full of sneakers. I can't say that will happen to everyone who tries this product. In fact, I think if I had tried using it on a cement floor in the basement of a house, for example, the results would not have been as extreme. Regardless, for me it was way too loud, and the vibrations way too much for me to keep riding, so I had to return it. The return was relatively easy with Amazon, however, I had to pay for the return shipping since it wasn't technically Amazon's fault I was returning the item (it cost about $15). That said, the CycleOps unit seemed very sturdy, and well built. And I think I would have had as bad or worse results with any other brand of mag trainer. So, if you are buying any mag trainer to use with a mountain bike, think about whether this will be a problem for you, too.

Great magnetic trainer, December 29, 2010
By Andy H
|
|
This is my first cycling trainer and I love it so far. Assembly was at bit confusing at first but it came together pretty quickly. I did have to replace the axle of the real wheel with the one provided, to attach it to the trainer but that was relatively simple. Riding with the trainer is stable and comfortable. I use the gears on my bike to adjust the resistance after setting the resistance mechanism to a middle setting. As far as noise level, on a scale of one to ten (with 10 being the loudest) I would give it a 6. It definitely makes some noise but with headphones in you barely notice the noise at all. Without headphones it is still relatively easy to watch TV and hear just fine. This is a high quality well built trainer with all of the basic features one would expect. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for their first trainer or to replace an older one.

Good Entry Level Trainer, November 8, 2010
By GA Trainer

I was looking for a good entry level trainer for my bike. I looked at others that were lower cost but their reviews changed my mind. The trainer arrived as quoted. The unit is built solid and is easy to setup. The unit provides adequate resistance for most users just getting into a training program. I feel the price could be a little more competitive but overall it's a good buy. I would recommend it.

My husband and I each have a trainer and we think they are great. They do need a bit of tweaking to get them just right and you can't coast but they still make for a great work out. Some mornings are too cold and too dark to ride outside and I find the trainer to be a great safe alternative. This product is our first trainer and I doubt we will be needed another.

Decent Bike Trainer, January 30, 2010
By J. Turner
|
|
I have never owned a bike trainer before, so I don't know how this product compares with other products.
As far as the performance of this product goes, I have only used it twice and it works like a charm! An employee at a cycling shop told me that these bike trainers are louder with mountain bikes than with road bikes. I have been using my trainer with a mountain bike, and I noticed that if the gears are turned down to a lower level, it is not as loud. I have been able to use this item just fine without a block for the front wheel or a mat underneath the trainer.
As far as assembly goes, the directions were a little unclear. However, for the most part, the trainer itself is intuitive to use.
I would recommend this product to a friend or family member.

Great product for the price, January 22, 2010
By L. Barauskas (Cleveland, OH USA)
|
|
This product arrived within a few days of ordering, set up quickly and I was biking that day! The noise level is slightly lower than a motorized treadmill. A smoother back tire greatly reduces the noise level! The climbing block is absolutely necessary to balance the bike for a comfortable ride; otherwise, the rear of your bike will be several inches higher than the front. The workout is noticable but also adjustable for any fitness level. The Mag (the fewest bells and whistles) provides an effective workout. Changing my gears (3 hardest) provides enough resisitance change for my workout. Resistance can also be changed manually on the trainer by getting off the bike and making the adjustment. It has not been necessary to stop my workout to change the resistance as the gear changes are sufficient. This trainer provides a great break from the gym and it feels good to be able to bike regardless of the weather! The product also has a lifetime warranty and mine came with an workout DVD that can be customized. Great buy and no regrets!

This indoor bicycle trainer enabled me to convert a bike that I no longer used into an exercise bike that I use often. It is very well made, works smoothly, and is pretty quiet. It is very stable, and I feel comfortable getting on and off, as well as when I'm riding. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because it was difficult to assemble because the instructions were not clear. But once that was done, it has worked very well.

I love this trainer, however, my Schwinn 10 Speed was almost not wide enough to be supported by it.
This trainer offers plenty of resistance and I can easily add more by simply shifting into a higher gear on the bike.
Overall the trainer is very solid and a heavy duty piece of equipment.
(A climbing block for the front tire is a must to raise the front tire.)
I have NO NOISE using mine as my bike has smooth, road touring tires.
I would certainly tell a friend to buy this.
I am very happy with mine so far.

Great beginner->average trainer, January 24, 2010

This trainer has performed very well, having had it for around two weeks. The setup was very quick; install the provided rear spindle (if necessary), bolt the resistance unit to the trainer frame, adjust the wheel clamp, and you're off! Some of the reviews say that noise was a problem, but I've found that even having my TV at a normal volume cancels it out. There is some vibration, but that's just from how the unit provides resistance (much less than you'd find cycling down an asphalt road). This unit does actually fold-up pretty well (about 2.5 feet wide, by a foot deep, and two feet tall).
From walking up to the bike, re-mounting it on the trainer, and putting a riser block under the front tire, it takes only a minute or two until you're moving. I would recommend this to anyone looking to do some winter training or just looking to work on cardio in some low-impact exercise.

Just recieved this trai ner from Amazon and am quite impressed with the quality of this trainer, it is very well built and will last a lifetime. This arrived in record time after I order the piece of equipment. The instructions were easy to understand and connecting the bike to the trainer was a breeze. I can easily recommend this trainer and the seller without reservations.

CyclOps Mag Tranier, November 18, 2011

Product works great and provided riding time when the cold and wet weather does not allow outside riding. Even though I have a fixed rear wheel, the system was easy to install and get up and running. The noise level is a lot lower than I anticipated and is quite enough to allow for watching video or TV while biking. Was able to get an adaptor long line kit for my Tech Invinti 6i to mount to the real wheel so I can get time, distance and average speed. Amazon delivery was quicker than expected. I would recommend this unit for anyone who is looking for a solid entry level trainer.

Very Pleased., October 29, 2011

This CycleOps Mag trainer is great. I bought a smooth tire to replace my knobby mountain bike tire and went for a ride. The trainer isn't silent, but so quiet that it isn't even a factor. For those who complain of noise, I wonder if a smooth tire would help. As for resistance, plenty enough for all but the most hard core riders.

Great Trainer, May 2, 2012
By veganese

I use this trainer with my mountain bike in place of an exercise bike. It works great. The noise is not bad at all. It is not silent, but it is not bad. All of the instructions on the CycleOps website tell you to change out the skewer on your bike with the one that comes with the trainer. I couldn't figure out how to do that with my bike, so I took it to a bicycle shop where I was told that I would have to get a new wheel for my bike if I wanted to use their skewer. I then went to a second bike shop, where I was told that I don't need the skewer that came with the trainer. So my bike fits on this trainer without the included skewer.

This is the trainer I love., February 11, 2012

This indoor bicycle trainer rocks my boat (or in this case, my bike) like no other. Super easy to assemble(instructions/tools included). It's solid and is not bulky at all, it looks pretty darn good in my opinion. The package looks very cool(not important but eye-candy is always good)and a DVD-movie was included, it's about biking and the sort, not bad if you ask me. Now, let's get to the point please, OK. Some people complain about it being too loud, in my experience this is only true when I use non-flat wheels. And even so, the sound is acceptable, nothing too ear-bombing or so, just a little loud when you ride it real fast(which I use as a motivation, he he). The overall size is just great, the mechanism to adjust the wheel to the trainer is so simple your granda can do it. I also put a 20' - 24' wheel adapter on it and it matches perfectly. Well, if you don't want to spend a load of money but want a serious trainer then buying this trainer sounds like the best answer to me. Note: I've being using it non-stop since fall last year and it still works like the very first day. Tough as nails!

Reasonable to assemble and works well, January 15, 2012

The trainer was pretty easy to assemble and does a good job of allowing one to "go through the paces" on a bike in an inside environment. Well pleased so far. Seems to be very durable as well.

Not earth shattering, but it works., December 30, 2011

I have had the CycleOps Trainer for a few days now and have put in around 2 hours on it. While there is some noise, it is not as loud as I had expected. Watching T.V. or listening to music is easy while biking and I don't really notice the sound from the trainer. You are not going to get an extreme workout from this trainer, but if you are looking for a light to moderate workout to burn a few extra calories during the winter without breaking the bank, this will do the trick.
