on selecting the right frame version, September 30, 2008
By David Fiorino

The mount looks great and works great with the Topeak bags that are designed for it. I bought the side frames also because I got the EXP bag with panniers. The rack mounts pretty fast and easy to your seat post and the frame supports also go on pretty quick. I also put the MTX fender on, which I wasn't sure would go on with the pannier frame. It all integrates perfectly. I am going to post a picture soon. Make sure you put it on tight and realize it is really a commuter rack. If you are using it while hitting rough trails on a mountain bike expect it to shift around some if you have much loaded on it. As for frame selection I chose the A frame and it was an incorrect decision for me and so exchanged it for the V. I was afraid the V frame would sit too close to my tire with the fender on so I opted for a high set up. You should try to mount it low so as not to raise the center of gravity or battle the weight of the filled bag. The reason for the A frame is if your mounting it on a small bike with a low seat with little clearance from seat to tire. The equivalent of a BMX bike. The E frame should work for a lot to play it safe including road and mountain bikes. The V frame will work on quite a few as long as the tire isn't too big. I have a 26" mountain bike tire and it sits a few inches from the tire. Oh if you have a wedge under you seat you can probably keep it on but it is a tight fit. So far I love the look and other than one incident of it shifting have loved the performance.

Best for smooth terrain, November 12, 2008

Ummm. This is the 3rd Topeak Beam Rack that I have owned. The other 2 have broken at the weld joints. The first two probably lasted a total of 3 years and about 6000 miles. You may ask, why do they break and why do I keep buying? Well, I think that they break because, while I use this rack on my commuter bike, my riding style may be better considered urban mountain biking. Riding up steps or down sets of stairs are common occurences and, in the end, I guess this riding style puts too much stress on the welds. I keep buying new racks because the Topeak pack that goes with the rack has held up well through this whole time and cost a significant chunk of change itself. The slide mechanism that holds the pack on the rack is absolutely fabulous. So, we'll see how long this 3rd one lasts. Next time I may go to a local steel shop and see if they can make something custom.
In summary, if you are going to use this on smooth terrain it is an excellent investment. The topeak pack/rack system works really well and the different packs available are remarkably verstatile. I have had no problems with the quick release mechanism, since once I put it on I rarely ever took it off. If you are going to be bouncing around alot, then it may be worth doing a little more research and evaluating other options. Ride On.

Good for what it is, but...., September 15, 2007
By M. Myers (Homosassa Springs, FL United States)

I own a Topeak beam rack. I've used it exactly twice. I cannot fault Topeak's quality. They make quality products, and their customer service is fantastic. The problem I had with the rack is inherent to its design, in my opinion. Topeak chose to use a quick release. Good idea. Unfortunately, a QR doesn't close as tightly as a 4-bolt design---and I got really tired of my rack rotating when I took corners. I didn't overload it---I used the Topeak trunk rack and at most carried scrubs and lunch.
I now own bikes with rack eyelets. I have a traditional rack on one bike and that's ideal. But there is another option for bikes without eyelets----a saddlebag. No, not a SEATbag, but a traditional saddlebag, made by Carradice. They are not cheap, but they will last forever and can work on ANY bike, even the most flyweight of racers. If you use a Brooks saddle, attachment is easy---but there are adapters to work on any saddle. If I only had ONE bike and it had no eyelets, I'd just run a big saddlebag. Much more stable.

Not exactly what you expect, January 9, 2008
By Andrew Dunn
|
|
I bought this thing thinking I could remove it when ever I wanted. So if i wanted to go on a long ride, and I didn't want to transport anything, I would be unencumbered. However, this is not the case. If you put anything over 5 lbs on the rack then it will move around and really mess up your ride.
So to compensate for the swaying you have to screw it on so tight that you have to use tools to remove it. This works a little, but doesn't completely stop it from moving if you got more than 10 lbs on it. So now i am stuck with this thing and since I bought the bag that clips onto it I am forced to buy a stationary rack.
They system is a great idea, but I think the Topeak MTX BeamRack needs more refining. I recommend just getting a topeak stationary rack with the MTX bag system.

Great product, May 3, 2007
By S. Gale (Germany)

I use this for a Nashabr zip off backpack that mounts on side rack. It makes my commute to work easier and I don't have to worry about things bumping out. The only problem I have had is that on turns sometimes the weight will shift and push the side rack and MTX rack in towards the tire. Then I can hear it rub, and have to stop and readjust it. This is rally a problem with the MTX rack not the frame.

Great purchase!, May 12, 2007
By Nancy B. (Hilton Head Island, SC)

Purchased this rack with the MTX bag for our second bike, so now both my my husband and I both have one. We enjoy riding long distance charity road rides, and this set-up is perfect: take extra energy bars, ibuprofen, another T-shirt, or stash extra clothing. At home, my husband will make a run to the grocery store on his mountain bike, slip the bag off his rack, and pack it up in the store, slip it back on outside, and away he goes. It can be switched from bike to bike easily enough, and you looks nice enough that we've been asked where we got ours. Like I said, the fact that we're on our 2nd rack and bag should be proof enough that this is a winning combo.

Unclear, July 8, 2011

I am disappointed to realize I need to purchase the main rack as these are just the side frames that attach to the main frame that you need to purchase seperately. Not clearly stated in the description. The gray of the side frame blends with the rest of the picture misleading the purchaser to think it is one piece.

Quick and Convienent, July 8, 2009
By Thomas E. Tweedel (Austin, TX United States)

I got this rack more or less exclusively to carry one of the Topeak MTX trunks for bike commuting to work. There are several different styles of this rack with different angles.
Functionally speaking there is no difference in quality or utility between the different styles. The main difference is what angle do you need to attach to your seat post and clear your tire. The configuration of your frame, seat post and any other seat post accessories will determine which one is right for you. I got the straight post as that fit my bike the best (Cannondale Bad boy ultra).
I went for the clamp on style vs the screw on style because it gave me the flexibility to easily take it on and off. I can put it on for the commute and then when I get home take off and loose the extra weight for recreational riding. I can also easily move it to my mountain bike and use it for running errands and shopping. Keep in mind its weight limit is 30 lbs. If you are doing heavy shopping you need to get one that has struts that attach to your bike frame.
Getting it on and off is easy enough, just tighten or loosen the clamp screw. Its designed to fit thicker tubes. In order to get it on my old mountain bike I had to use a shim from an old rack of mine. It works fine, but keep that in mind if you've got a bike with a thinner seat post.
Once concern I had was if the rack was going to shift around a lot when loaded. I found that if I get it tightened right that's not an issue. It's held the weight of a watermelon and still not shifted. You do have to get it clamped down as much as possible. If you want the lever to fit flush you have to do the adjustments one full rotation at a time.
The rack has some rubber tie downs on it, haven't used them. There is also a mounting kit for putting a back light on the back that looks complicated. For me its not something I would use. When the trunk is on the rack I can clip it to the trunk, when the trunk is off you can see the light mounted on the seat post.
NOTE: If you get a trunk with the side Panniers you will need to get the side panel attachments for this rack.
Pros
Easy on, easy off
Not too heavy
Cons
Easy to steal (by function of its design)
Doesn't fit thinner seat posts

Well-designed and easy to use, January 14, 2007

I bought this rack with a Topeak trunk bag. Once adjusted, the rack is easily installed and removed from the bicycle. The rack can be used without the bag -- using the rack's bungee cords. The bag securely slides on the rack. I also bought a Topeak fender that simply attaches to the rack. It's been a good combination for road and trail riding.

MTX Panniers, November 19, 2008
By T. Smith (Sacramento, CA)
|
|
Everything fits and works great the only thing I would change on these is the middle supports are made of plastic. I have not had any problems with them as of yet and have packed in 20lbs worth of texts books in the pannier bags though I would feel more confident if these were aluminum or steel.

Great added functionality, May 27, 2008
By David Heiser (Las Vegas, NV USA)

Adding the panniers to my beam rack help my trips to and from work tremendously. They off course ensure that my panniers do not rub against my tire but also stablize the load by the tie offs at the bottom of the frames. I do own the Topeak MTX Trunk Bag EXP with panniers and this just completed the set. I am now able to ride to work, carrying food, shoes, and clothes without worry of loss. These were definitely worth the expense.

Not for heavy bags..., June 19, 2011
By Richard N. Clark (Colorado Springs, CO USA)
|
|
This is more related to the overall combination of the rack and the side-frame for beam racks. If you carry close to the 20lb limit or if you don't have both sides equally balanced, unless you are doing mild riding with no standing while climbing hills, the rack will move. I have had to shift back to my normal rack for my daily commute with laptop in tow...

Works well on my Carbon Road Bike, July 16, 2011
By Retired Michigander (Michigan)
|
|
Bought this to use on my Carbon Road bike. I do have a alloy seat post so it works well. The only issue was my post was too wide, so I could only use one of the rubber shims that came with it, but a little electrical tape on the other side did the the trick. Fits tight, doesn't sway, and no damage to the seat post. I use it with the MTX DXP Trunk bag with fold out/down Panniers along with the MTX dual side pannier frame for some "credit card" touring, and it works great. Easily holds the 12 pounds of gear I take for a 3 day trip.

Excellent construction quality. For light duty work under special conditions only. Not a good value overall., May 23, 2011
By AMZ bike
|
|
Important caveat: my review applies to any rack that only has a single mount point on the seat post. Swaying will *inevitably* occur no matter how tight you attach it if the load is moderately heavy.
I have used this rack for a year. I can't give it a good review.
This rack sways side to side under heavy load, regardless of how securely you fasten it. It is difficult to secure tightly because it is a quick release. This is a huge problem because metal parts from the pannier frame or from overhanging cargo will get caught in the spokes, and cause an accident or equipment damage. A load less than 15 pounds would not cause problems. As load weight increases, the chances of swaying will increase regardless of how tightly you attach the rack.
If your bike can accommodate a multi-point mounted rack like the Topeak Explorer, you would be much better off buying that type of rack. It is cheaper, very easy to install, and more useful in more situations.
The only reason to buy this beam rack is if you have a mountain bike with a rear shock or your bike cannot accommodate a multi-point mounted rack for some other reason. Or if you absolutely need the quick release functionality.
Among seat post mounted beam racks, I believe this is the best in class. High quality materials and craftsmanship throughout. That's why this gets 3 stars instead of 1.
Don't make the same mistake I did, buy a Topeak Explorer if at all possible.

Perfect. Just what I needed., May 13, 2011
By Bill

I actually have a larger frame road bike and had the explorer rack mounted. It worked, but I had two major problems with it. 1) I have larger feet, and with the side bags open, when I pedal, my heals would hit the bags. 2) My bike rack (on my vehicle) did not close correctly, the explorer rack was in the way. I looked at this very closely, and decided to buy the E type instead of the V type, just for the extra height, so when I have the MTX bag on the mount I have plenty of clearance.
Keep in mind I have a road bike, and will not be carrying a lot of weight in the bag. Plus, I am a larger guy (6'4"), and feel I have no need to worry about bike feeling "top heavy".
This fit the bill just perfect. It has the quick release, so I can remove it when not needed. With the MTX bag installed in the mount, the bag location is directly behind my seat, which gives me plenty of clearance to pedal, and no problems with my bike rack closing properly.
I would highly recommend it. Just know that the recommendations are: A type - Smaller bike frames, E type - Average bike frame, V type - Larger bike frame. I say this because not everyone will be trying to solve the same problems I had.

Use with a Topeak bag for a great system, April 27, 2010
By Dog Lover (Minneapolis, MN, USA)
|
|
This is my third seat post rack. Overall, when combined with a Topeak bag, it's the best. I can't speak to longevity as I have only had the rack for one month. I bought one for me and one for my wife. Both fit our bikes perfectly, because of the availability of three different shapes (E, A, or V types). The real plus is when you combine this rack with a Topeak bag that just slides on and locks into place.
This rack is rated for 20 pounds. As the rack is relatively light, I would not challenge this limitation. If you need to carry a ton, there are heavier racks out there - I own one. But if you don't need a steel girder for your luggage, this lighter weight is nice. It's enough for my needs.
Some reviews state that the rack wanders from side to side. In my experience, that would only happen if you did not secure it tight enough, or overloaded it. That being said, I wish it bolted to the seat-post to reduce the opportunity for theft. That is the primary reason for not giving it five stars. But overall, it's a great rack and rack system.

Looks nice but...., October 20, 2009
By Endarkened (Bowie, MD)

A great idea but lacks refinement. This rack is ideal if you live in a low crime area and don't hall much very often. I don't hall much but this rack screams take me. I would have loved to see a bolt on connection at least that would make the thief do some work. If you can get it tight enough to your post this rack will work well. I felt the quick release is wasted because I want the rack on most of the time. Good: functions well, and looks nice. Bad: Price a bit high for this price you could get a more sturdy 4 point connection rack, hard to get the perfect fit, easily stolen.

A nice rack, June 7, 2007
By Bike Rider (St. Clair, MO)
|
|
At first I thought this rack was a little pricey (I bought the Topeck pannier first without realizing I had to buy this particular rack), but now that I have used it, I like it. It comes on and off very easily with the quick release. The "V" shape fits over my finder just right, and I believe it would fit over most large framed bikes just right. I highly recommend this rack for anyone wanting to carry up to 20 pounds.

Mediocre at best, November 9, 2006
By James P. Phillips (Tampa, Fl United States)
|
|
While this rack looks good, and appears well constructed, it's mounting system leaves something to be desired. While attempting to lock this unit down tight enough to keep it from constantly twisting around, I managed to bend the locking lever. Now don't get me wrong, this is mounted on my wife's bike (a cruiser) and has had at most 10 lbs of groceries in the handy basket you can purchase that slides right on. But having to stop every so often to straighten this thing out is quite annoying. I suppose I will end up modifying the locking mechanism to avoid further aggravation. By the way, I have a Delta rear rack on my ATB that mounts to the seat post using a 4 bolt clamp. Much sturdier, and it was much less expensive, as well.

These work perfectly with the MTX rack, to keep the panniers in place, though I would like the plastic rods that hold it stable on the sides to be made out of the same metal as the rear stabilization piece. No problems yet, I was just concerned during install with over-tightening the side braces and braking one, or if I lay my bike down, it might rest on the rack and brake the brace.

Add on for Topeak beam rack, April 17, 2009
By perrymasonary (Miami, Florida)

This add-on for Topeak's beam bicycle racks is well made and is easily installed. I used a bike bag with panniers and the frame worked wonderful along with my Topeak beam rack.
With the frame you have more options as to the bike bag you can use on your rack. The weight is minimal and if you are using it to commute this is a useful upgrade for your Topeak beam rack.
The packaging instructions were excellent and all hardware was secure in the packaging---I give Topeak an A+ for this.

The tooless install if dropped won't be missed, July 18, 2011
By Anton Tropashko (Oakland, CA)
|
|
I've had this for a while on the wife's 29er and despite my worries that just like a motorbike tankbag this will look like trash in no time at all
the bag still looks new after half a year of use. Not leaving it outdoors in foul weather might have something to do with it :^)
As a single star reviewer pointed out you have to screw the front bolt really tight to avoid sway with heavy loads. I do not carry anything heavy BUT the large bolt and its handle does slightly
rub against the tights. Since nearly everyone has to carry an allen set with them anyway and the bag is certainly large enough to accommodate two of them I see no point in "no tools" kind of setup
esp since it results in an ugly stem attachment arrangement that rubs (very slightly) against the pedaling rider.
Lose the lever, use the allen head screws for stem attachment bracket and a lot of people will thank you.
I shaved a single star for the populist attachment setup explained above. Other than that I hard pressed to find anything no to like about the rack
(or the bag and how the two nicely clickety click together). The bag is durable and zippers are either ykk or similarly high grade as you'd expect from Topeak.

The BeamRack is secure now!, December 5, 2010
By Jovan M. Puyo (Quezon City, NCR Philippines)
|
|
I think Topeak has done their homework on this one. Reading from the reviews years ago, it seems there were problems trying to prevent the BeamRack from slipping and moving. The one that I bought, installed and tested days ago was very stable. And not only did I ride it on cemented roads but on rough trails, too. I think that says a lot.
The product comes with four rubber spacers that you put in the clamp to prevent it from slipping. Make sure that you choose the correct one for your seatpost size. Next, it helps to tighten the quick release to make it secure. I used a hex wrench to do this. When that is over, you're good to go.
Some information on my ride: I rode my bike with the rack, the MTX TrunkBag DXP on top and the side pannier frame attached. I didn't bomb the trail going down.
My specs:
Seatpost: Truvativ Team Double Clamp 27.2 aluminum seatpost
BeamRack: Topeak MTX Beamrack E-Type

My bike will not accomodate a regular rack so my options are limited. Sure, I could rig something up with stay clamps, but when I don't need the rack it would be a pain to take off.
This rack gets the job done, plus it's so easy to install/remove...quick release! The rack does have a tendancy to shift, but to alleviate this I recommend whipping off your seat post with alcohol to remove any grease/dirt to ensure a good seal, it will help cut down on lateral movement of the rack.
If you're just using the trunk bag without panniers you don't have much to worry about if the rack shifts a little to one side or the other. If you're going to use the pannier bags you'll want to get the pannier adapter kit to keep the bags out of your spokes. This is when the rack shift can cause a problem and cause the pannier adapter to rub on your back wheel.
I did a 332 mile ride in 5 days and only had to adjust the rack a few times because it shifted. I road in solid rain for two days and I think that helped the rack slide more so than it would have if I had been riding in dry conditions. I was able to nudge the rack back into position with my foot while riding so it wasn't too much of an inconvenience.
I'd give it 4 1/2 stars if it were an option just for the fact that the rack is prone to shifting when fully loaded...but it is what it is. Just keep in mind to make sure your seat post is free of dust & grease and it should minimize any sideways movement.

Very sturdy, and well built., July 26, 2009

I am very happy with my Topeak MTX Beam Rack V series. It is stout and abit on the heavy side, but that is to be expected for how sturdy it is. I have it installed on my Specialized Rockhopper comp 29er with a 23" Frame, and I have no clearance issues whatsoever. Even with the added Topeak Defender Fender, I still have about 5 inches of tire clearance.
One thing I can say though, the rack comes with several pieces that you can use to attach different light sources, though if you use the one for the Topeak Tail light, and the fender at the same time, I recommend turning the tailight bracket upside down so the fender doesn't vibrate and knock your light loose. This is no biggy, it already has holes in it to be rotated 180 degrees, probably for this reason.
Again, very happy, its beefy, and I have no worries about it coming loose with its extra heavy duty seat post quick release attachment.

Topeak Rack easy to use, February 7, 2009
By Daniel Chin (Alameda, CA)
|
|
I purchased the Topeak QR Rack to use when commuting to work. It is very easy to attach and take off. I ride two different bikes, depending on the weather, and the rack easily can be switched over in 2 minutes, since it is attached to the seat post only. The system is very clever, as the bag slides off and on with ease. No need to strap the bag down.
The only complaint I have is that the bag sits high and raises the center of gravity, making balancing more difficult. Otherwise, this rack and bag system is great and highly recommended.

Great Rack, May 12, 2012
By UcMike

I have found this to be a very useful cargo rack for all my cargo needs in combination with an MTX cargo bag. With heavy loads it does occasionally drift off center but this is very minor. A clean seat post and a tight fit make this rack stay in place without much hassle. If rack movement is your only concern I'd say get this rack. I have the V-Type rack with the pannier extension and I load them to the brim and bike around at 20+ MPH no problem. Great product!

Excellent Product, April 29, 2012
By John T. Baker

This rack works great and is very well built. The rack grips my seat stem very securely. It can be moved if, for instance you kick it while mounting the bicycle, however, it certainly grips tightly enough to hold position during ride, even when fully loaded. Removing and re-installing pack is slick and convenient. Outstanding design. Make sure you order the proper rack type...the V Type worked great for my Cannondale T-1000. Unable to use fanny pack with this, however, not needed if you have a Topeak bag with side pockets. Further, if you ride without a bag, only using the rack as a fender, then a fanny pack would work fine.

Good Beam Rack, December 15, 2011
By Ben
|
|
Great high quality construction. Light yet strong. I use it to carry a full DXP trunk bag (i don't fold out the paniers). It solved the problem of not having a place to hook up a panier rack to my road bike- no connection points. Great thing about it is that you can take it off easily for weekend rides. Although not recommended, i use it on my carbon fiber seat post with no issues. Just be careful and get the right version. The selection of a downward, straight or upward angle version depends on the size of your bike and setup. Biggest thing to watch out for is that the CLAMP MIGHT RUB THE INNER THIGHS! Check the location in relation to the saddle. If your saddle if offset quite far back off the seat post (i.e. a lower more streamlined position) the clamp will touch your inner thigh when your leg is fully extended (particularly on the right hand side).

Loved it, but it didn't fit my XS bike, October 28, 2011
By ennui23

This product is great! It doesn't move around if tightened properly. I purchased the A type because it said it is for smaller frames (mine is XS). However, when I used this item with the Trolley Folding basket folded, the handle of the basket would hit the back of my seat. If you are short like me (and your seat isn't high enough, the basket & or bag may not fit under the seat like it should and will come in contact with your seat. I switched it for the E type and that seems to clear the wheel AND sit far enough below the seat that I don't have issues with the basket handle. I have used this frame to go to the grocery store and pick up groceries and didn't have any issues with it moving around. I highly recommend.

great pannier frame, October 16, 2011
By S. Mazrolle (USA)

The frame easily slipped onto my Topeak rack. Now I have room for sweaters and more vegetables. My bike won't take a regular rack so this is great. Allows for more stuff without it hitting my backside since I have a small frame bike. lightweight too.

Solid rack, but you need to have an engineering degree to put it together. After I managed to install it (took me 1 hour!) it is very useful. Spring is strong and rack feels very solid, and the price is great!

GREAT PRODUCT, October 31, 2008
By biken4fun (Central PA)

I bought this to mount on my MTX bike rack. I have the MTX EXP dual side pannier bag. The side rails of course ensure that my panniers do not rub against my tire. This just completed the set. Now when we go Rail Trail riding I can relax knowing the side bags won't get into my tire. Thanks for such an EXELLENT Product.

Unessasary, September 10, 2008
By Paul (Iraq, Normally Hawaii)

When I bought this on-line I bout it with a pannier bag and rack. This side frame is a little too large for the bag that typically comes for the rack I got it for. The other thing is the beam rack comes with a side frame that is the perfect size for the bag. Unless you have a pannier bag with larger saddle bags, you don't need this frame.

This frame is a MUST for any Topeka Pannier bags using this rack. Size is very specific to only these types of bags. I would not waste my money if you are not going this route.

...BUT my inner thigh rubs against the seat-post-clamp part of the rack which is VERY annoying. Hard to believe no one experienced this during testing... wait, maybe they barely tested it. Lame.
