2.0 out of 5 stars.  nice basket, bad mounting mechanism, January 21, 2006
By nice guy (Georgia, USA)
There are two considerations for front-mounting baskets like this: The quality of the basket itself and the quality of the mechanism which attaches the basket to the bike. As far as the former, the Topeak basket is great. It offers a fine mesh which is strong and will not snag the things you put in the basket.

However, the attachment is not very good. The attachment works in two ways. First it grips the handlebar. This holds the basket in place, but it does not keep it from tilting down when you put something somewhat heavy in it. To keep it from tilting down, the basket comes with a little wire that wraps around the handlebar stem. The problem is that it is JUST a little wire. It is not strong enough to secure the basket. If you're like me, you will sometimes carry books in your basket. If the bike is just stationary, the basket will hold the books. However, if you are riding, and you go over any kind of bump, the little wire won't be able to handle the jolt. The wire will break and the basket will tilt forward (which makes it unusable).

Even though the wire broke, I am still using this basket. I found a way to rig it with some nylon rope. It wasn't too hard, but it was a pain.

In short, I would not recommend this basket unless you will only carrying virtually weightless stuff or unless you want to spend some time figuring out a better way to attach the basket.

I know someone who has the "Cycle Force Quick Release" basket. It has a much stronger mechanism for attaching the basket. The basket is pretty nice, too (though not quite as nice as the Topeak one). Overall, it is probably a better bet.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Not what I had hoped, August 31, 2006
By Jim Black (Colorado)
I purchased this basket for its compatibility with my topeak explorer rack. Topeak generally has good products but this basket fell short. It is made of very thin wire mesh which dents and bends with the slightest stress. The handle is unpadded and very thin and bent the first time that I used it. It was easy enough to bend back in to shape, but the fact that it bends so easily makes it pretty much useless. The basket does transport stuff on your rack, but I wish I had just strapped a plastic crate on and saved myself $20. The quick/track idea was good, but not very well executed on this particular item.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Form meets Function, August 28, 2006
By pam632 (Buffalo, NY USA)
After extensive research in the bicycle basket area, I chose this model and I'm very happy I did! This basket is a great value for the price. I had it installed at my local bicycle shop, because my computer had to be moved and I didn't want to fiddle with it, but it seemed to be an easy enough task. The best feature is that the basket comes off if needed. It's extremely easy to just slide this off and on. There's even a lift up handle so you can carry the basket around, which I do at garage sales and markets! When I originally opened the box, I thought the basket was huge, but once it was installed and used, I've decided that it's just right! This basket has a smaller mesh design, so you don't have to worry about smaller things falling through it. I think it's also a nicer shape, more rounded, than the standard square models. This model is both stylish and functional. I'd definitely recommend this!

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Bad design, good idea, January 12, 2007
By DJR (Nicasio)
I don't know what they were thinking. The bracket attaches to the handle bars, but there is no third point of attachment, so it forms a pivot or hinge. Even if you screw it down tight it will still sag until it hits your front wheel or fender. I am going to put something between the stem and the back of the basket to keep this from happening, but you would think they could have figured this out themselves.

The basket itself is nice and the quick release is well engineered. But given the choice, I would not have bought it after watching it slowing sag away...

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for cargo but it is not without significant flaws., January 3, 2007
By T. Shih (Berkeley, CA)
I bought this basket because I have a Topeak Explorer Rack and wanted to use it for when I go shopping or need to carry more than usual on my commute to school. I needed a basket to use with my rack, and since this basket uses the MTX mounting system, it works perfectly with compatible Topeak racks.

Pros:
As a basket, the utility cannot be denied. Also, the basket is pretty sturdy. It's very easy to install and remove and there is a removable handle built into the basket.

Cons:
It's not really a one-size-fits all design and the handle is too whimpy for any significant weight. I have a 21 inch bike and the basket fits on with ease. My friend has a 14 inch bike and the top of the basket interferes with her seat. As for the handle, it begins to give under only the weight of my cable and u-lock. Another flaw is that the basket will not sit flat on the floor, since the rail mounting system sticks out. There are two little feet on the front of the basket, but that only stabilizes the front of the basket. There are no feet on the back so it has a tendancy to wobble when put on the floor. Finally, while I say the basket is pretty sturdy, it's not very rigid. After putting my locks in the basket for a semester, I've noticed significant bulging and dents.

Overall Impression:
It's not very expensive and it holds quite a bit of stuff. Also, Topeak has pretty good customer service so if the mounting area ever does break, they will replace it for free. I bought it because I needed and basket and it's a lot more elegant than using a milk crate secured with zip ties.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Handle is worthless., May 22, 2007
By Web designer (San Francisco, CA)
I used this with the Topeak Fixer 6 for MTX Rear Basket and Topeak Explorer Bicycle Rack with Disc Brake Mounts on a women's Giant mountain bike. As I stated in the review of the Explorer, if you plan on using this on a women's bike or a small frame you will have issues with the basket hitting the seat. You will have to push the rear rack back so that the basket clears the seat. The placard that comes with the basket shows a bike seat raised to a ridiculous height just to clear the basket (I'll try and scan it for you to see.)

As other have stated, the handle is useless. Put a 15 pound weight in the basket and the handle bent and came off. Not to double up, I'll just say that I totally agree with T. Shih's review below.

When mounted on the rack using the Fixer 6, I found that the basket tends to flex and bend around a bit more than I like. With a backpack full of college books you are looking at a wobbly basket. I don't think it will come off (hope not), but I think the movement will end up breaking some welds.

Could be better, but it looks better than a milk crate.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Poor design made it an expensive laundry basket, February 28, 2006
By creatively crackers (Reno, NV)
This product failed the first time I used it. It threw all my groceries out of the basket, and if I hadn't used a bungie cord, they would have gone into the street. The connection device is poorly engineered, and now it holds my bicycle laundry, gloves, hats, and helmet.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  well, it lasted a week, June 4, 2007
By Leah Peeks (shelter island, new york)
i was totally excited for the large size & small mesh of the basket, but the thing was off of my bike within a week. it lost a screw, which made the basket slide down & hit my tire.
the assembly instructions were nonsensical (pictures only) & the unit as a whole is not sturdy enough to handle it's own size.
i am now sans-basket. again.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Doesn't hold up, June 16, 2008
By B. Terry
I had one of these on my bike for about six months. During that time:
- the handle fell off and got caught in my spokes (ouch!)
- the basket got several large holes in it from regular usage

Before the holes and the missing handle, it was a nice basket

I would not recommend this to anyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Fine for a wire., December 26, 2007
By Hippoclitus (Pensacola, FL USA)
Everyone seems to have such low opinions of this basket. I think its great. Put 10 books in it and the handle sags, but thats more weight than its designed to carry. With a 12 pounds, a good shake will bend the handle so that it must be bent back. Who shakes their basket? I haven't had any bulges appear from regular loading or had a problem with the basket wobbling around. It seems very secure to me, though I am using it on a Trek 1000. A mountain bike instead of a road bike may have more shake in the basket simply because the rider is not staying on smooth surfaces. The attachment of the basket with the included mount onto the Topeak Super Tourist DX is solid. If you get this basket to get groceries you wont be disappointed. If you want to haul bricks or university text's you should invest in one or two panniers since you have the rack already.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Secure attachment is great idea, November 10, 2006
By Web designer, student (Chicago, IL)
The biggest selling point for this basket is how it easily attaches to a Topeak MTX rack and is quickly removed.

However, the handle leaves something to be desired. It is very weak and bends when you have a gallon of milk in here. Topeak could have gone a couple extra steps and make some niches/holes for bungee cord net hooks. A net can be hooked, but if there was a specific place for the net's hooks, the net could be placed over the basket faster.

The basket without the handle is a very solid structure, but DO NOT rely on the handle.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  In use for over five years and still working, June 14, 2008
By The Happy Hermit (FLA USA)
I don't drive so I use my bike for everything. I bring home up to twenty five pounds of groceries, cat litter, etc. about twice a week and have been doing this for about five years and so far nothing on the basket has broken. My routes are not even all paved, sometimes I'm carrying my load over rocky gravel and sand trails but still the basket has held up. I never use the handle so I haven't encountered any problems there but I will say that in my opinion it isn't all that easy to slide on and off my seat post mounted Topeak rack. Some WD40 sprayed on helps but still to me it's not what I'd call easy. I love the look of the basket on my bike but now I'm shopping for a different rack and some rear rack grocery back totes, the kind that hang down from a rack, because I prefer the stability of that lowered center of gravity.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I like this item, January 4, 2007
By Maggie Rice walker (LI New York)
I use this basket for many uses. When I am carring a large load or grocery shopping. I took off the handle and got a small cargo net and attached it. That way I can put anyting in the basket and not loose my stuff.
When not using this basket I use the topeak bag. This is a great system and I get more use out of my bike. I like to do general riding and shopping on my bike.
I think this system is a great idea they came up with. I just love it.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice looking basket, but structurally deficient, June 23, 2008
By David G. Wuchinich (Yonkers, NY United States)
I have owned this basket for two years. It is very stylish and has a powered epoxy finish to prevent corrosion. It attaches to the handlebars but I needed to provide additional support underneath to carry groceries without the basket wobbling precariously. Even with this additional support, the bracket containing the handlebar grips eventually separated from the basket. The metal mesh literally ripped apart from the mounting bracket. I do not use this basket for decoration or carrying light loads as I use my bike for much of my shopping. Anyone wanting a front basket for such utilitarian use should consider a basket that has, besides handlebar grips, strut supports attaching to the front wheel axle, such as some of the Wald models. Such baskets do not lift off, a feature not required in any case if you use a shopping bag, but they are much less likely to break when carrying a couple quarts of milk and a five pound bag of flour over the bumps and ruts.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Great basket, poor attachment, May 12, 2007
By Sara Hutton (Florida, USA)
The basket is great- sturdy with small holes. I like that I can throw my bike lock and keys in there without worrying about them slipping through the cracks. The main reason I got that basket was because it was removable- and it does remove easily. The problem is that the basket sags- sometimes so much that it touches my front tire. Nothing falls out, but it's just annoying. The main problem is that the screws connecting to the plastic part that secures the basket to the part attached to the bike come loose and get lost. After this happened to one, I made sure the others were as tight as possible, but still ended up losing 2 more! The basket stays on with one screw, but I'm not using this again until I can devise a better securing method. I regret my purchase- do not buy this basket!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Basket, Lousy Mount, February 23, 2009
By Thomas E. Tweedel (Austin, TX United States)
I got this basket to accessorize out the wife's bike. I looked at it vs some others and like it best because of the basket design. It was very sturdy and had the fine mesh down at the bottom with the wide wire frame up at the top. This gives the best of both worlds, you can still carry fine small items on the bottom and strap/tie things to the top.

While it was a great basket it didn't come with a great mount. The mount is ALL plastic. On a load bearing item that's your first clue it's going to be trouble. You have some rubber tape strips you attach to the plastic clips which go over your handlebars and into the mounting mechanism. To install it you put these clips in and screw them in. I was really worried about this but examined the clips and at least they had metal screw lining. So I tightened them up a bit but not too tight. The basket then slips on top of this mount. Unfortunately it doesn't slip on with a "click" so you have to push and pull to make sure your mounted and not going to come off.

I could have been ok with this except that with realistic use and not much load the basket begin to sag a little bit over the bumps. I figured I didn't have it tight enough so I took it off, positioned it just perfect and tightened it up. I didn't use a powertool or anything but it broke. The metal lining held but the screw broke through the plate that the basket hooks up to. Plastic fails again.

I'm going to take another look at the system and see if there is anyway I can rig the mount because I really like the basket. But if not its going back to the store it came from as a disappointment. I expected better. It will probably be replaced with an item that has an inferior basket but a superior mount (all metal).

Extra Touches

Also that little plastic "extension" clip that comes with it is supposed to be used as extra mounting space for lights, reflectors or bike computers. A nice touch.

There is also a metal wire your supposed to thread through the mount and around your handlebar. I guess its in case you experience catastrophic failure of the plastic mounts the basket won't completely fall off right away.

So in Summary

Pros
Great basket, best I've seen.
Nice extra touches.

Cons
Lousy mount.
Be very careful when installing.
No "click" when locked.

Summary
Heavy duty basket for light duty ONLY. Not realistic.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Convenient size and mounting, November 16, 2008
By madmatt6773
Easy slide on -slide off mounting, large enough for a bag of groceries, sturdy enough for a frozen 20 pound turkey. Don't even think about using the handle to carry groceries though, it can barely support the weight a sack lunch and sweatshirt. Can only be used with a Topeak rack. Suspension seat post or oversize saddle may interfere with fit.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good basket, September 11, 2008
By rusrus (Lakewood, IL United States)
I needed a basket to carry my backpack (laptop, lunch, couple books) from home to the train and back. This definitely fits the bill. The mesh is stronger metal than I would have thought from the pictures, but it's definitely not indestructible - but you'd have to whack it pretty hard to bend it out of shape. The "handle" is pretty thin, but I have no plans on using this as a shopping basket - though, if you did, the handle should work for all but the heaviest items. The clip fits perfectly into the Topeak rack (explorer rack w/ disc brakes) I bought as well, and it's a pretty sturdy fit. All in all, it's a good basket for the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  nice basket, November 16, 2007
By Electronics buff (San Diego, CA)
I had a Topeak rack and a matching panier (travel bag). I needed something a little larger for trips to the beach...don't buy this basket without the matching Topeak rack or you are wasting your money. Also, you need about 8 inches of clearance between the bootom of the bike seat and the top of the rack...The basket needs to fit under the bike seat...In other words, you need to be six feet tall if you want to use this basket...

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Thumbs up for a 'quick release' bicycle basket., November 6, 2007
By Lawrence Bain
I have used this basket with the Explorer rack for about 6 months now. I commute daily without a basket but put on this MTX Basket 10 or more times a week to run shopping errands. It has worked out very well for me.

The carrying handle is too weak to carry more then light loads by hand, but I tend not to use it that way. I regularly carrying 20 to 25 pounds in the basket on the bike with no stability problems. Two full grocery bags fit in it just fine. The basket is holding up well, it still looks almost new.

If you are looking for a quick-release basket for light to medium loads, this basket is worth considering.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice for small errands, August 10, 2007
By Gerard D. Fritz
This basket mounts on the Explorer bicycle rack so you will also need to purchase this Topeak Explorer Bike Rack. I did install it on a ladies' beach cruiser and just like other reviews stated, the basket wobbles a little and mounts close to the seat. However, my wife wanted a rear basket to carry a cooler to the beach and this is perfect. It won't hold alot like other reviews stated, but it will easily fit one bag of groceries. It comes off and on easily with Topeak's MTX track system so it isn't mounted permanently on the rear rack like other rear baskets and you can leave it off if you don't need it. It could be a little bigger in length, but otherwise is what my wife wanted.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  bicycle basket, May 20, 2007
By Bike Commuter (San Jose, CA USA)
I started commuting to work on my bike 4 weeks ago. Wearing my backpack was no good due to the extra weight. I got the Topeak basket and really like it a lot. I slide it on the rack and click it into place in seconds, and throw my backpack in there. Much better. I've also used the basket to run to the grocery store to pick up a few things. It's very convenient to be able to shop with the basket and slip it back on the bike rack for the trip home. Another bonus is that I don't have to waste plastic shopping bags.

I bought this item and the rear bike that it goes with 4 months ago, and it has completely fallen apart. The handle will bend, the rail it uses to lock into the rack will jam and break off, and the latch will fall off. Please save your money. As an engineer i can say this product was very poorly engineered.

Overall it looks like a nice product. I feel it was somewhat mis-represented, in that it wasn't made clear that you would have to purchase their bike rack in order to mount the basket on your bike ANOTHER 30 dollars on top of an already expensive basket. Basically had I known I'd be into this thing for OVER 60 dollars I'd never had done it...

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Pretty But Stupid, March 26, 2009
By andy_christ (New York, NY United States)
As others have posted, this is the best looking front basket on the market but the mounting brackets fail fast-- I've gone through three of these babies in as many years. The problem is that the plastic is formed way too thin in the screw plate, so that the screw heads easily pull through (as does the safety wire) especially when the weather is hot and the brackets soften. If only Topeak would fix this deficiency in their mold the mounting brackets would probably hold just fine. Currently they do sell the same bracket separately but it is outrageous that the company continues to manufacture such a defective product and charge for replacements.

Another niggling little problem is that you have to depress the release leaver not just to remove the basket from the mount, but also to put it back on. This action is quite awkward when the basket is heavily loaded.

I'd recommend anyone purchasing this unit despite the aforementioned warnings also to invest in something like the Pyramid Alloy Double Bicycle Kickstand, otherwise your bike will always be tipping over when you try to park it and the basket will just crumple.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  not perfect, but works well, August 11, 2010
By surtrsflame
If you already have an MTX rack, then I see no need to look elsewhere. The attachment mechanism works really well, especially after a bit of paraffin wax is applied to the rack to improve the sliding. that said, it's not perfect. A heavy load can be a bit cumbersome to attach, and it does rattle a bit. However, unless a very large weight is loaded I don't see it having any real effect on the welds, a concern mentioned in other reviews.

Many reviews have mentioned the badness of the handle, something I've noticed myself. However, this is easily fixed by a bungee cord going through some sort of round hollow thing (old mtn bike grip, etc) to act as a nice handle. Unfortunately this is a problem with every bike basket I've seen and used.

It also will not fit a 12pack of soda cans. It might fit the 24packs, but I wouldn't know as the only times I buy soda is when they come out with the 'special editions' made with real sugar and those only come out in 12packs. The Jones 8packs fit fine.

So it's not perfect, but I'm quite happy with it.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  A Convienent Product with Some Quirks, June 18, 2008
By Dana R. Goldstein
I've really enjoyed using this basket, but there are a few caveats. I'm 5'7", and I would caution folks shorter than me that their seat will push up against the basket -- mine does. It doesn't bother me very much, but it might if my seat were just a little bit lower.

The only other issue is that you really have to tug at the basket to remove it. Sometimes I ask someone else to hold onto the handle bars of my bike for me while I pull it off, which gives extra leverage. When I'm alone, it can take a minute.

All in all though, I like the mounting system and the way this basket looks, and it has held everything I've put in it. If I'm piling stuff high up in it, I use a net to hold everything in place.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Poor design. Holds very little weight, shakes like mad, falls apart quickly., June 5, 2010
By R. Lustig (New York, NY USA)
The previous reviewer put it best and I'm just affirming that that was also my experience. Without a third point of attachment, ie. something from UNDERNEATH, the basket simply bounces itself to pieces. Even a few grocery items, ie 3 grapefruits, is too much for this basket to handle. Once you're moving it starts bouncing madly, the joint is stressed and can break, and then basket itself begins to tear around the attachment point (the latter is what happened to me). Mine lasted only a handful of rides. It's odd to me that none of the removable basket designs I've come across have come upon the simple idea of support from UNDERNEATH, ie. bracing the basket against the front post as well as the handlebars, with some adjustable length brace to account for different handlebar types and positions.

Also, very importantly, you should know that it's not really totally removable. You have to keep this big ugly attachment clamp permanently on your handlebars (it's a pain to install and uninstall). If you're like me and you commute during the week by bike and then sometimes want to go for a longer Saturday ride, but you don't want the extra junk affixed to your bike. Why not attach the basket to the bike itself, rather then to this flimsy clamp. It would be much more solid.

The closest shot I've seen to a truly removable basket that has support from underneath is the Wald 3133 Q-R Bolt-On Front Handlebar Bike Basket and its related different sizes. But the two problems with these are that 1). the attachement point to the handlebars is a fixed size (not adjustable) and will only fit very thin handlebars. I don't know of many bikes with handlebars that thin. What were the designers thinking? Worse is 2). there is no securing mechanism at all (not even a simple velcro strap or clamp). Yes a velcro strap would make it slightly less removable--one would have to pull the strap in order to remove the basket--but most people would be happy to take the extra 1 second rather than face the basket bouncing off the bicycle while flying at full speed, ending up under your tire and nearly knocking you off your bike into fast-moving traffic, which is what happened to me! I should have thought to go to the hardware store and buy some velcro strapping. Too late now, the baskets destroyed. I'm glad I'm still alive. It's dismaying to me how poorly conceived all of the designs are. With more and more people bicycling to work and to run errands every day, I'm surprised there isn't a huge demand for a sturdy basket that you can take off easily and completely whenever you want, but that will stay on solidly when you want it to.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Doggie Bike Basket, September 13, 2008
By GJH (NH, USA)
Bought for my Yorkshire Terrier so she can now accompany us on bike rides -- she loves it! Roomy enough for her to sit or lie down. Easy to attach a short leash to her halter, although she has no intention of trying to exit the basket! It was a great find.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bicycle basket, August 23, 2007
By Barbara A. Zenkowich
I am very satisfied with the basket. I really like the small openings the mesh basket has. I can take the basket off very easily and bring it in the house. It easily can handle the weight of a gallon of milk plus other things.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent bit of kit, February 23, 2011
By hholt_portsea (Portsea)
I love this basket. It's easy to pop it on or take it off with the quick release gadget. Very light and very strong. The size is just perfect for me. I put a piece of plywood in the bottom to support some of my heavier cargo. This has made it even more sturdy. Highly recommended.

I have read people saying the handle can bend. If I have much to carry I put a shopping bag inside the basket so the handle has never really been a problem for me. Come to think of it, using the basket to hold shopping bags will stop almost all the problems some people have had.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Efficient carrier, July 24, 2010
By William Croom
I already had a Topeak carrier, which made this basket an easier choice. It was a bit more expensive than I had wanted, so my expectations were higher. At first the basket was hard to slide on the rack, but that problem resolved with time. The siding is easily bent, but the basket is large enough to carry home some groceries, and I have attached bungees to keep things inside. Overall I have been pleased.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Too cumbersome, June 28, 2010
By bookaholic (Keizer, OR USA)
I have had this basket only since April 22nd. On one of my rides, I lost the handle somehow. Now it's a pain to carry into stores with me and I am going to get something else that easier to deal with. I like the rack system but the basket is just too cumbersome!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Basket is on Bike and working (sort of), June 29, 2008
By Surviver (Brattleboro, Vermont, USA)
Nice basket idea and it fits the rack. I did not realize how it hooked on the rack. I am glad i ordered it from the same brand. However it does have a problem with the style of bike we have. Its too close to the seat but its not the makers fault. The bike is setup different. Low seat on large frame. Be nice if there was a way to adjust where the basket hooks. It's 2 inches too close to the seat. Should be a way to show types of bikes basket good for.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Topeak Rear Basket, May 16, 2008
By Birddogthecat (The Carolina Beaches)
In theory this should be the perfect solution for marketing and errands. The basket attaches and detaches with ease. There is a locking, foldable handle. If only it fit better behind the bicycle seat. My seat is too low for the basket to slide under, so it pushes back hard against the seat. Therefore, I can feel it when I ride and it is also hard to get the catch to click onto the Explorer Rack bar.

Good luck with the directions. They are all but useless.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Be Sure You Purchase the Special Rear Rack Needed for This Item, April 18, 2008
By CC (USA)
This basket is a nice one. It seems relatively sturdy, although it did arrive with one side crushed down a bit. But I was able to bend it back into shape. To use the nice clip on feature, though, you need their special rear rack to clip into. I had ordered a different rear rack, thinking it would clip in universally to any rear rack. Not the case. So now I have to go through the hassle of returning the incompatible rear rack and finding the right one. All in all, though, I do think this will be a good system for biking to the grocery store and purchasing two bags of groceries. I also purchased two of the diamond cargo nets and they appear to work nicely with this basket for securing the grocery bags for the ride home.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Topeak or not Topeak, June 8, 2007
By Kevin Colwell (Torrance, CA)
I was surprised when I got this basket that the quick-release must be mounted on a Topeak brand rack. This certainly wasn't clear when I placed my order.

I bought a budget rack and ended up attaching this basket with bungie cords. Not quite what I expected.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Poor quality, support system breaks, January 21, 2011
By Mountain Cat (New York, NY)
I have other Topeak products that are of high quality, but this went into the trash after numerous attempts to properly mount it. Followed all instructions but the flimsy little cable that is supposed to hold the basket from sliding down doesn't work. First, it slips a lot. When you tighten it, it easily frays from the holding screw. Finally, just when you think you got it positioned and tightened properly, the stub on the other end goes through the weak plastic hole in the bracket that is supposed to hold it (metal being held by a plastic retainer = bad idea).

So we called Topeak and got a new wire sent to us. Same problem within 10 minutes. I suppose the basket works great if you keep it empty. We gave up and threw this piece of garbage out.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Do Not Buy! Bad mounting design., November 18, 2009
By commercial.hf
I bought this basket after having it recommended at a local bike shop..."can it transport a gallon of milk?" I asked...."Sure." Not at all....the plastic mount is not sufficient to hold the basket without drooping. This basket is not useful for groceries or any other items with any weight at all. Do not buy.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Not sturdy enough for regular use, April 17, 2009
By jakeweed (Miami)
I agree with previous reviewer about difficulty of getting the basket firmly mounted to the handlebars so that it is secure and doesn't move. With a lot of effort, though, I was able to do that. The problem I had, and the reason why I now need to buy a new basket, is that the basket cannot handle much weight. After a year's use where I have put books and other objects that are not super heavy but not light either, the basket has become unwelded to the bracket and thus completely unusable.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  not for anything heavy, August 6, 2008
By D. Duff (Cambridge, MA United States)
the good: generally seems well made. it will probably serve you well if you want to carry small, light loads. the quick-release works well.

the bad: if you carry anything substantial or dense, the handlebar mount is not up to the task and will tend to let the basket "droop" down. if you tighten it up as hard as you can, you might get it to stay if you are lucky. so books or groceries are out of the question for this basket.

on mine after using it for a year or so, the the basket eventually gave way (metal mesh actually tore away) around the mount, probably due to metal fatigue, so once again i would NOT recommend this for serious hauling duty. for that i suspect you would be much better served by a basket that has struts going down to the front forks.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great basket for the money., August 15, 2008
By E. Jarvis
This basket is absolutely ideal for mountain bikes. I had it put on my bike for me at the bike shop which I am very thankful for because it would be a pain to set up on my own.

The basket is so strong and big that it will carry anything I could possibly want to put in it. I could even take it to the library or the grocery store because it comes off the mount to enable it to be carried.

It does tilt a couple of degrees but nothing drastic because it sits way above my front tire. I am totally satisfied with this product!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Convenient but not without flaws, July 30, 2011
By andy
The big surprise to me after installing this basket was that I had to remove my under-seat bag. This would be a problem with any rear basket but is something to consider. Overall it is a decent basket but Topeak left out a few things that would make it great.

Pro's :
+ hard to beat the convenience
+ inexpensive
+ looks better than a front basket

Con's :
+ As other reviewers have noted, the handle is pretty flimsy. It is also not secured or padded and is noisy when you go over a bump. This is a minor but aggravating issue.
+ No built-in ability to lock to bike. A spot for a small padlock would make me feel better about leaving it on the bike.
+ Can interfere with the seat. The basket has a cutout in the front that helps and this wasn't an issue on my bike, but I have my seatpost up as far as it will go and there's not much clearance.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Very functional, June 22, 2011
By Joe
This arrived in a box that had been crushed. I was able to repair the basket because the sides are not that strong. That could be a disadvantage for some. I use this to pick up heavier groceries (bottles and such). It holds these products quite well and keeps them on my bike, but the handle will not carry the weight to use it as a shopping cart.

My real advantage comes from the MTX attachement system. The basket is also used on my nephews bike to carry his school things back and forth. The attachement system allows us to share the basket as we need it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great size basket, April 29, 2010
By DayDreaming2010 (Los Cabos Mexico)
I love the basket for the utlity. However, my bike seat is positioned too close to my rear bike rack and I cannot fit the basket latch on it so I haveto use bunglee cords. Also the hndle comes out easily when it is laid down. But other than that - great basket for the price, the size is operfect for grocery shopping, carring my soccer ball to the beach, a 24-case of bear, etc. Fun times!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice Rack, January 7, 2010
By Adam Lefringhouse (Pacific Grove, WA)
Bought basket because I was looking for something that could carry my laptop into class with me without having to wear a backpack. Of all the Topeak bags (besides the laptop bag which doesn't allow me to carry any other books) this basket carries it all. When you load up the basket, it does make the bike top heavy and a little harder to control, but you can load that thing up like it is nobodies business. Have used it for books, groceries, etc. Great carrying device for the price.

Con: Rattles a little but a piece of cardboard jammed in takes care of it.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Won't fit many bikes, September 18, 2011
By EricaS (Washington, DC)
Unfortunately, this basket is designed to sit *underneath* the seat and is quite tall, so you need a significant amount of stem height in order to make it work. Because of the way the mounting mechanism is designed (to click in just below the seat) you cannot solve this problem by moving it back on the rack.

If you consider buying this basket, measure your bike first to ensure there is at least 8" of space between the rack and the underside of your saddle - otherwise it just won't fit.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good wire basket, December 8, 2011
By Cecil
This is my third basket of this type. I am fairly rough on them and the wire net around the bottom of the basket and the sides break from repeated flexing. When the basket gets bent its main wires are stiff enough so they are hard to straighten.

I like this basket because it is the right size and I can modify it like I want. I take a piece of 1 1/4 inch wood dowel and cut a kerf lengthwise in it and glue it to to front of the basket (hot glue gun). I can then mount a headlight on the front of the basket instead on the handlebar. This allows me to use a handlebar headlamp while using a basket.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Front or Rear which is it?, October 31, 2011
By BrianD
I purchased this along with a Topeak Explorer Bike Rack. I thought I was getting a rear basket but instead got a front basket. When you read the description you realize it is not clear. The pull down gives you two options but again neither is specific. I have since figured it out. Select the 975cu.in. if you want the Front, and LxWxH?40.5x33.5x24.1cm/?15.9?x13.2?x9.5? if you want the rear. It will show up in your checkout basket correctly. This is something I probably should have noted. I still don't understand why the drop down could not just simply say Front or Rear.

That said I mounted it to my wife's bike and I do like it's quick release mechanism. It is light wire but that is the trade off with a bike. How much weight do you want, or don't want??

Update:

Well I now have one of each, front and rear basket. The rear requires that you purchase the matching Topeak Explorer Bike Rack I mentioned above for it to function properly, it has a matching slotted slide attachment. Very slick if a little tricky to get lined up. It also has a locking latch that engages when you slide the basket fully forward. This unfortunately will only work if the seat is up high enough for the basket to slide under it. The basket measures 23 inches high from the center of the rear wheel axle (the approximate attachment point for the Topeak Explorer Rack). I have a short 29 inch inseam resulting in a measurement to the base of the seat to the rear axle of only 21 inches, therefore the basket will not slide fully forward because of a 2 inch interference. In general I would not recommend this basket for a woman's bike, unless you have long legs. My wife's seat base for example is even lower at 19 inches from the rear axle.

In concluding what I really think should happen is that the Topack Explorer Rack should be redesigned so that the forward bar is located 4 inches rearward. Or at the very least provide a bolt on attachment to facilitate the latch. This would eliminate any potential seat interference. I may try to come up with something on my own.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  great basket with brain dead mounting system, April 24, 2010
By David L. Presotto
I wish I'ld seen the reviews before I bought it. Mine doesn't sag but only because I noticed the incipient problems and put washers behind all the screws before they tore through. Even with that, its unbelievably bouncy. It really needs a second mount point. Engineering one now.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Little Basket, November 16, 2008
By pura vida (Houston, Texas)
This little basket is just what I was hoping it would be, and fits perfectly on my Raleigh women's comfort bike. I can snap it off to do a light run to the corner store and then snap it back on for the ride home with no need for the environmentally unfriendly plastic grocery bag. I worried that putting too much weight in the basket might throw my balance off when turning corners, but so far that has not been the case. The handle does rattle a bit when the basket is empty, but I keep it tied down with a cute little ribbon until I need to use it. All in all, it was a good choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Cool basket, September 5, 2008
By M. Whitaker
This is a great looking basket. I was a bit worried that it may not hold much, as far as weight is concerned. But, that is not a problem with my bike, as my front reflector seems to keep it stabled just fine.

If you do purchase this basket, don't forget to put the one inch strips of foam inside of the handlebar attachment, to keep it from slipping. I had to take apart to put them in, because I had forgotten to do that, (or rather, didn't know where they went until I had it all together).

By Margo Desantis (New York)
Now I can ride to the grocery store ( no petrol), take my basket in with me and keep items in basket ( no plastic) and it just attaches back to the mount in one quick button push! Fits plenty and I really dont feel like an idiot with a basket on her bike, cause i can remove when not in use and the mount stays attached to the bike :-)) Great product, very sturdy construction. Took a bit to figure out how to mount tho as it didnt come with the tool or written instructions ( only pictures) thank goodness im technically inclined!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Almost got me killed, June 13, 2011
By Katgirl
This basket actually worked very well for me for two years, UNTIL the wire mesh of the basket wore through where it is attached and the whole basket fell off while I was riding, almost causing a nasty spill. The basket always did have a lot of movement and tipping to it, but was still functional until this happened! I dont' think I'd buy another basket from this company again.
