Wonderful product, May 2, 2008
By hardcover adventurer (Seattle, WA United States)

I bought an old bike rack from craigs list and my son's bike wouldn't fit on it - the bar was too thick. To top it off, I ride a "girl bike" so mine wouldn't fit either. I was about to give up when I heard about bike frame adapters. This thing is great! It's portable, easily attaches, sturdy and makes my bikes fit on my bike rack. Now I just keep it in my trunk for when I need it.

Very Cool, February 22, 2009
By Austin

This bike frame adapter is awesome & priced right. It has a spring in the body so when u pull it apart to attach to your handle bar stem & seat post it retracts for a tight fit, great feature. It also has rubber on both ends to reduce slipping & scratching of your bike.
i own a Yamika one too & this one is wayyyy better. The Yamika one has no internal body spring so as you drive over bumps or what not it slides apart & becomes loose on your bike rack.
Great deal, most in stores are $35 or more & this is a great deal for $21 !

Serious mountain bikers, be careful!, November 10, 2010
By Brett A Myers (Pordenone, Italy)
|
|
I initially bought this product after searching endlessly for a review by an owner of the same bike I had recently bought (2010 Specialized Enduro), but with no luck. There were multiple reviews by owners of bikes with unusual geometry, so I thought I was looking at the right product.
Unfortunately, no. If you have a high-dollar mountain bike, you probably have a large headset with limited or no space between it and your stem, like mine. I had to use the larger of the two ends of the adapter around the stem, and the smaller end around my remote-adjustable seatpost, and I wasn't too happy about having the adapter clamping directly on the seatpost's stanchion, either. But I was willing to accept even that.
Until I finally had the adapter on my bike, and attempted to put it on the trunk-mounted bike rack. Too bad that the lack of space between the headset and stem, also meant no space between the adapter and the forward end of my top tube! Where the top tube met the headset, there was literally aobut 3/4" between the top tube and the adapter! No bike rack I've ever seen has tubes this small, let alone the cradles that actually hold the bike's frame.
I have nothing negative to say about the adapter itself; the product is of average quality, and I assume it would fulfill its function adequately, with a bike with different geometry. I just wish they had been a little more forthcoming with its dimensions, and (in a perfect world) a list of bikes it was known to fit. Of course, I also wish I had the forethought to stare at my bike, and visualize the adapter in place before I purchased it; it might have been quite obvious that it wouldn't have worked. That sounds a little silly, but would have saved me about $35!
So, my advice to you is to actually picture where on your bike this adapter would fit, and how this will fit in with the bike rack you have or will soon have. (My bike rack is a Thule 961XT.) Just be quite sure that this will work for your situation before buying it, and don't make the same mistake I did!

My wife and I both own beach cruisers. Easily fits on the bike in seconds. A must have for mounting properly on a rack. No worries during transport on the expressway. Does the job well. This is a good, solid product for the money. Inexpensive compared to other models. Would highly recommend.

GREAT TOOL - Wish I'd Seen This One First!, June 3, 2009
By Electrologist, Master Esthetician,.. (VIRGINIA)
|
|
GREAT telescoping, adjustable length "crossbar" for the bike that doesn't have one. Women's bikes and kids bikes many times cannot be placed on a standard bike carrier if they are not equipped with a crossbar, or if the crossbar is too low or too short. This is great! The locking carabiner-type opening on BOTH ends makes this much easier AND safer than other brands.
MUCH BETTER THAN THE OTHER BRAND:
I just wish I would have seen this bike frame adapter before I bought the "other one." My first experience was poorly designed Allen Tension Bar Bicycle Cross-Bar Adaptor that has a "safety" cable attached. On the first use, the cable slipped out of its clamp and when I checked it, the main clamp holding it together would push open with little pressure. I could have lost my brand new bike on the first outing!
When I opened the box for my NEW SpareHand Bike Frame Adaptor, it only took 3 seconds to recognize the superior workmanship and design.
DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED!

Good Product, August 11, 2010
By Triplet Dad (Atlanta, GA)

The Swagman Bar Adapter Deluxe and Sparehand Bike Frame Adapter are identical products. I couldn't find any specifications for the products, thought I would try one of each and was surprised to find that they were one in the same. Only the packaging was different. If you're not sure if this will work for you, the Sparehand would be much easier to repackage since the Swagman came in a tamper-proof hard plastic package with rivets to hold it together.
The products were sturdy, but the button and small uncoated metal components are not stainless steel and therefore prone to rusting if exposed to the elements. The products are easy to disassemble, however, so you could clean or oil the components if necessary.
If you think these adapters might be a little too long for your needs, it is clear that you could disassemble one and cut the two sliding bars down using a hack saw, pipe cutter, etc. without any difficulty.

Did the trick!, August 31, 2008
By Jennifer (Maple Grove, Minnesota)

Both my children and I have bikes that do not have the straight crossbar. This made it very difficult to put all four bikes on our thule bike rack. The first time we used the bike rack it was like putting a puzzle together to get them to fit. We purchased these and it is now a breeze to get all of our bikes on. The buttons are a little hard to push at first but they got easier and you can use a pen or pencil to push them in. They held on really well and we didn't worry about them coming loose on the road. The only thing we had to do was disconnect the front brake cable because we were afraid the adapter would put to much pressure on it. We love this product and have recommended it to several of our friends.

Well built, strudy and a good value., August 1, 2009

I bought this for my 2004 Specialized Big Hit. It is basically a 40 lbs downhill bike with a frame that doesn't mount to traditional racks. Received the adapter within about 3 days of ordering it. It has an all steel construction, including the clamps. There is a spring inside so it retracts and keeps a snug fit. The clamps lock in place so they won't accidentally open. I've got a Yakima big horn 4, fits great. Would highly recommend.

Sturdy adaptor, August 3, 2008
By Cycling Mom (Horseheads, New York United States)
|
|
This adaptor is sturdy and easy to use. There is a button you press to open for installing and uninstalling. I bought it to use on a full size bike that does not have the top tube. I was able to use it on the bike and carry on my Kingpin 4 without issues. I was also able to put it on my daughter's bike which is 21 inches. I have not tried to put her bike on the carrier yet, but I am a little concerned because it does not look like there is a lot of clearance with the adaptor to mount her bike on the carrier.

Does the job., November 2, 2010
By Jeffrey Bennett (Memphis)
|
|
Used it 3 times now. I worry a little that the little button catch could break free free and let the latch open. That would be an extremely bad thing on the road. You should probably fasten the bike with some additional velcro straps or something as an added safety measure. I would not think any of the other adapters are much more sturdy so for the price this was fine.

Great Adaptor,worth more, October 20, 2010
By Hubby

My wife and I have a Toyota Prius and took up bicycle riding after my retiring. Hollywood provided a perfect fitting bike rack but to my dismay I couldn't figure out how to get my wife's "girl" bike securely on the rack. She checked different web sites and we found that adding a bar to the bike making it look like a "boy's" bike would allow it to be mounted on the rack securely. This rack is so simple to attach and remove once we're to our driven destination. Because the bikes fit so closely to the cars body I didn't want any movement which may scratch the cars paint, the bar fits so great on the bike and into the rack that it does not move at all during driving. It's a great invention and well worth the price which I paid of $34.00 S&H included, the price on AMAZON is fantastic.

Works great, August 1, 2008

Very simple to use and does the trick with a girl's bike. My seat post to handlebars distance is at the minimum, so it's loose when on, but it doesn't matter when the bike is mounted on the holder.

TJD, January 18, 2012

I purchased a new Trek Fuel 8 and needed an adaptor because the location of the rear shock interfered with my bike carrier. I was in a hurry to buy so I purchased a Lund from the bike shop. I am a mechanical engineer and immediately saw several design flaws which could have allowed the bike to come loose. The next day I went to another bike shop where I found a Thule adaptor. Again, design flaws that could result in release, only this thing actually opened with a little force (whoa!). After reviewing this Sparehand on Amazon I purchased it and was very pleased. The design of the hooks opens outward and not up or down and not at the center of the hook radius but near the neck of the adaptor instead. As a result, the weight of the bike rests on the hook radius which is solid steel and should keep it from falling if it somehow opens by accident. The button releases are actually recessed into the frame of the adaptor and not standing out, so that your bike carrier straps cannot accidentally engage and allow the hook to open. You can tell there was more thought behind this design than the two other adaptors I purchased. Be mindful of the maximum expandable length and hook dimensions others have commented about as that could be an issue for some bikes. I do like the retractable feature on this item, it makes it easy to handle when taking on an off the bike. Overall a sturdy product with a good design. I liked it so much I purchased a second one for another bike and returned the two originals to the bike shops.... As a word of caution, this is not a sub for your bike frame. Whenever you use any of these adaptors you should always secure the frame to your carrier with additional straps. I would recommend this to anyone.

Well made, except for broken elastic., July 28, 2011
By Rennie (Nampa, ID)
|
|
The elastic inside the bar snapped the first time the bar was extended - with VERY little force applied. I disassembled the bar and removed the elastic to find it was very badly frayed where it broke. Obviously it was like this when it left the vendor. I repaired it using a small bungee cord and everything seems to be OK. I have not requested a refund or replacement as it now works fine. However, the vendor should look into possible QC issues. I'm posting this here because there is no option in past orders to contact seller once an item has been delivered EXCEPT to arrange for a replacement or refund.
The bar itself seems strong and well made. I'm sure it will do the job.

It's good but..., July 25, 2011
By G. Cachero
|
|
It's a good product to have especially for those bulky frame mountain bikes when you can't just put them on a bike hitch rack. For me this works just fine. Except for one thing, I wish the bar is a little shorter since it has tension. Even for my bike it's still a bit long. I bought two, one for me and one for my daughter and it's definitely long for my daughter's bike. I think it would be a better adaptor if it has a rest for the bar that holds the bike handle.

Mounts in seconds. No more pinched fingers., May 18, 2011
By shoagie (New Jersey)
|
|
This product does exactly what it is supposed to. It is well built and easy to use. It works very well with 2 women's bikes that we have that have very large down tubes. Bikes that were previously difficult to mount on a bike rack can now be mounted in just a few minutes. The jaw release / closure mechanism works easily and closes securely. Take 5 seconds to attaché the "Sparehand Bike Frame Adaptor" and then proceed to mount bike on your bike rack with the same method you would use to mount a man's bike.
I was a little hesitant on the price, but now I am happy to have made the purchase. I will probably buy a second one for another bike. One note of caution. Not that I had a problem, but it would be wise to make sure both the seat (and seat post) and the handlebars (and handlebar post) are tightened securely. The weight of the bike suspends from these two points when the bike is mounted to a bike rack using the "Sparehand Bike Frame Adaptor."

Good concept; needs better description / measurements, March 30, 2011
By Rich Cawthron (Lewisville, TX USA)
|
|
Bought this to carry children's bicycles on our car hitch style bike rack; was just "arranging" the bikes on the rack to make them work but figured I would purchase this to add the "center" bar to make them hang and carry easier. Unfortunately, the bar does not shorten down enough to fit child's bicycles. The connectors are very easy to operate and latch down well but this is only useful for adult or large teen bike's that are missing the center bar.

Great Item For A Great Price, March 25, 2011
By Timothy S. Callahan (Jackson, NJ USA)

I highly recommend this frame adapter as opposed to the "name brand" models. It performs the functions as the higher priced name brand versions equally if not better. The spring loaded design is what sold me on this one and it helps keep the adapter snug against the neck and tube of the bike.

Great price for a must-have item. If you have a woman's bike and want to transport it on a rack you NEED this adapter. We have this rack Yakima Super Joe 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack and my wife's bike only fit with this adapter. It's well made and very sturdy. We just moved from Florida to DC and used this adapter to attach the bike to our rack for the entire journey and didn't even have to think about it. I would buy this item again.

I bought this adapter to mount my daughter's 20" bike to our Yakima rear hitch rack. I was skeptical that it would fit on such a small frame but it ended up working nicely. I really like the latches on this adapter; they are very easy to open and close. The swiveling ends are also a nice feature since they allow a multitude of attachment options. We will save time and eliminate a lot of frustration with this product.

Great Product, September 25, 2009
By G. Peters (Georgia)

|
After two times trying to transport my new step through style bike without an adapter, I knew I had to get some sort of adapter. Due to local road conditions most of my riding is at parks - and I need to get the bike there somehow. 20+ minutes fighting to attach the bike to the car was not going to work.
I picked this adapter due to the great reviews on Amazon. All the reviews are correct. This item is easy to use (only takes a few seconds to attach), sturdy, and does the job well. I can now just hang the bike on the bike rack the way the rack was designed to be used. I am so SO glad I got this. Worth every penny I paid for it (which was less than some of the other options).

Measure your bike first to ensure min distance is 22 inches.
Nice how you can extend the adapter to fit your bike - 22 inches to 32 inches.
The ends are made of vinyl so they will not scratch up your bike like some of the cheaper ones made of metal
Worth it
