About Recumbent Exercise Bikes
Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, exercise bikes continue to be popular options for home exercise. They offer the same aerobic benefits of riding a bicycle at any time, in any weather, without leaving the comfort and safety of home. Exercise bikes don't take up much space, require little or no balance or coordination, and can provide an effective workout for all levels of users, from beginners to serious competitors. While the same could be said for a number of other types of home fitness equipment, the exercise bike is one of the few that allows you to watch television or read a magazine while you work out.

The term recumbent literally means "lying down." Exercising in a recumbent or reclining position allows the user to have full ergonomic back support, without causing strain on the arms, neck and shoulders, all of which can be common effects of using an upright bicycle. For many people, having convenient access to quality exercise equipment is critical to sticking with a long-term exercise program.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  This bike was a steal!, January 19, 2008
By momof3 (Knoxville, TN USA)
The bike shipped promptly, was easily assembled by my husband in about 30 minutes, and is everything the other reviewers says it is. It is SILENT, even when I'm biking fast (well - fast for me is 20 miles an hour). It is built well and seems very solid, although you can move it around a room pretty easily. It does not wiggle or bounce you, which makes it nice for reading. It is also nice that the controls do not block your view to the television. The calorie counter is not accurate. It shows the same number burned in my first 30 minutes at 20 miles per hour, as it does for my second 30 minutes at 15 miles per hour. I still gave it 5 stars though, because without knowing your weight and body fat percentage, no machine will accurately tell you the calories burned. I got rid of an elliptical trainer to buy this, because in order to go fast enough to get a good cardio workout on the elliptical I had lots of hip joint and knee pain - not so initially, but my body adjusted and I just couldn't work up a sweat even on the highest tension without the joint pain. I am getting a great workout on this bike, set at a level 2 difficulty, with no joint pain. Because there are 8 levels, I will have no problem continuing to challenge myself without having to just go faster.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for casual exerciser, September 6, 2008
By John E. Peck (Sodus, NY United States)
Overall the product is well built and can easily handle the advertised 250lbs. However, if you are on the high end of the weight scale and in some form of reasonable fitness the maximum resistance will not be enough for you.

After having a few upright bikes I can say that this reclining model is much easier on your back and wrists. The padding on the seat does leave a little to desire, but it's easily bearable for 1hr rides.

All needed parts were included and it went together in about 30 minutes.

Like everything else in the world you get what you pay for. The computer frequently will not turn itself off even after hours of non-use. The dial to adjust the tension broke after the first day (springs back to max resistance when you set it). You can get around this with a little bit of tape to stick it where you want it. Realistically though, you won't be using this bike on anything but the hardest setting - so it's not that much of an impact for me.

In summary, this is a great bike to buy if you don't have very strong legs, or are a casual exerciser. I'm not in fantastic shape but the hardest resistance is really a little too easy. It is made in China but does seem reasonably well engineered. The faults with it can easily be overlooked (unlike other bikes the resistance is set mechanically, the computer could completely die on this bike and you wouldn't miss out on anything). It seems like it will be fairly durable, when/if it does break mechanically I will probably try a different model in the same price range.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Makes life a little bit easier, November 26, 2007
By Joy Nakahara (USA)
This bike isn't noisy, nor does it take up a lot of space. I actually use it without the handle bars, which makes it even more compact. I also end up moving this bike around a lot (I'll move it near my computer to watch a movie, or closer to a light to read), and have had no issues- it's not as heavy as one might expect from an exercise machine.

I've had no problems with the time/distance attachment on the bike; it's very accurate. Just be careful, because the little box will fall if one knocks it by accident. Also, it's helpful to have two people when adjusting the length of the bike, I found it difficult to push together on my own. My final comment and reason for the 4 stars (not 5): Don't expect to spend more than a half-hour at a time on this bike, the seat isn't really cushioned for long usage... and it's really not super-comfortable in general- however, it is easy to add some pillows here and there.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesome Bike, January 2, 2008
By G. Kinsey (Brookland, AR)
I love this bike, it is so quiet. It was so easy to put together. I can watch TV or play video games and still get my exercise done. I bike for 90 minutes and burn 1000 calories. I can burn more calories on this than with walking or jogging. With this bike and the proper diet, I've lost 70 pounds, and I'm still losing. The price is now $50 lower than when I bought it.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good value -- not for shorter people, November 22, 2008
By Jay (Berkeley, CA, United States)
--Not too hard to assemble if you follow the instructions.
--VERY quiet, nice for watching TV while riding.
--Eight settings that provide enough of a range for most people.
--Would appreciate a more padded seat.
--Unfortunately this bike does not work well for a short person. Even my 5foot-7inch wife has to put a pillow behind her to be comfortable. We added another setting by drilling another hole, but that shouldn't be necessary.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  solid bike + Schwinn Active 20 comparison, August 5, 2009
By Keyser P. Soze (?)
First off, these recumbent exercise bikes are freaking genius -- you mean I can get in some good cardio while I sit on my ass in an air conditioned room and watch TV, read, play video games??? Deal.

I've had this bike for two weeks and am very pleased with my purchase. It's well-manufactured (all pieces fit together well during assembly), sturdy, and very quiet. I am fairly athletic and I am getting good resistance from the middle settings. My only complaints are that the assembly instructions sucked often (but it's a relatively simple assembly, so you will be able to figure it out, eventually) -- and yes, the seat is not terribly comfortable.

So basically, other than the seat (which is only sufficient) -- awesome bike.

BONUS review notes -- Comparison to Schwinn Active 20:
I did check out the Active 20 in a sports store, so I can give these comparison notes to anyone else who is struggling to pick a bike between the two. The big upsides of the Active 20 are comfort -- much more comfortable seat and a sweet cup holder -- and brand name. Another upside of the Active 20 is a more advanced computer (looked like you could do resistance programs and stuff) -- HOWEVER, I also feel like this is a big downside, because you change resistance using the computer, whereas it's a mechanical dial on the Phoenix. The computers on both bikes seem pretty cheap, so I like that if something goes wrong with the computer on the Phoenix, I really don't even need it, I can still adjust resistance and pedal away. Knowing what I know now, with a [...] difference I would still re-buy the Phoenix magnetic bike, but if the difference was [...] Much tougher call; I could probably go either way at that point, which speaks to the excellence of both bikes. Just depends on whether you want a very bare-bones but very usable bike (Phoenix) or something a little more luxurious (Schwinn).

5.0 out of 5 stars.  never give up!, August 30, 2008
By Janet F. Kiegel
I love my new exercycle! I am 79 yrs old and needed to exercise. I had another bike, but could no longer lift my legs high enough to get over the middle bar. (I have artificial hips and knees) With this new cycle. I can just sit and slide my leg across and onto the peddle. I have facing the TV and try to do it 3x a day for about 10 min. each time. In three weeks I have lost 10 lbs! Yippee! There's hope for me yet. It is so quiet and comfortable too; I love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  as advertised, December 1, 2007
By Val Morisi (NYC)
This is a bare bones system that works well. I use it as part of a varied workout routine. It's simple workout display gives me all the information I need....speed, time, calories and distance. Without the big console many higher end bikes have, it's easy to watch tv and knockout a half hour ride seemlessly. The ride is smooth and quiet and easily adjustable. It's simple enough to use that you might just stick to the program.....if not how much did you lose?

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great bike, great price., December 22, 2007
By Rogue (UT)
This was easy to put together, one person can do it. It's very quiet, and fits in my small room. It came quickly and was brought directly to my door even though I live on the second floor and the box weighed about 65 pounds. I love the fact that I can lift toning weights or read while riding it. It makes the exercising so much more enjoyable. I gave it 4 stars because the grips on the handle bars were impossible to put on, even though I followed the directions perfectly. I had to cut them in order to fit them on. But other than that, if anyone is looking for a simple recumbent bike that's quiet and will get the job done, this one is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great product for home use, December 29, 2007
By Randall C. Atkinson (Allentown, PA, USA)
Compared to other non-commercial exercise bikes, the Phoenix 99608 is an excellent buy. It was easy to assemble, well constructed, and operates very quietly. It was exactly as advertised. I expect it will provide many hours of hassle-free use. Don't expect to use the bike for hours at a time - the seat padding is not thick enough for that. My only other concern is that the seat may not be able to be adjusted appropriately for a person with short legs. Those observations not withstanding, I would recommend it to anyone who wants an inexpensive home exercise bike.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Easy work, August 23, 2007

Assembly was not difficult even for an old codger like me. Operation is smooth and appears to be equal to the very expensive units at the local Spa. Both my wife and I are pleased with the unit which is performing exactly as we expected.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Very good cost to performance ratio, February 11, 2009
By L. A. Woodall (Detroit, MI)
The bike shipped quickly. The shipping box was covered in saran wrap (likely to keep water out and make the cardboard weak - the box is pretty heavy for 1 person to move around). Unpacking the bike needs to be done carefully, as the parts are sort of intermixed in the box and do not lift out easily - in trying to pull out the heaviest item, I dropped it and cracked off a piece of the front cover. Pulling things out from a box laid sideways would have probably been more effective.

Bike setup is easy enough, just follow the directions. In all, it took me about an hour. There is a piece of black plastic used to make adjusting the leg length easier that is a bit difficult to get exactly in place - I hammered that part down to get it to sit right.

The bike itself is very nice. When they say silent, they mean it. You can peddle and watch TV (or whatever) without having to turn up the volume or annoying other people nearby like a treadmill would. The adjustable resistance will do for anyone looking for a basic workout. The reader works well enough, although I'm a little doubtful about how they count calories burned. At 5'6", the bike leg length was perfect, but it might be a bit of a reach for someone shorter than me. Once assembled, it drags around easy enough for me to be able to move it between my tv and my computer. If you are going to try and use a laptop while peddling, i recommend getting one of those adjustable 'laptop stands/desks' so your neck doesn't have to stay craned in one direction for the duration of your peddling.

4/5 stars because I was annoyed the front panel cracked open when I dropped it due to bad packaging technique. The bike maker could have also figured out a way to make the peddling motion capture energy to power the display instead of requiring batteries. No other complaints. Great for people who don't want the knee/foot pressure of running, want to stay indoors, want a recumbent bike for multi-tasking, or have the requirement to not be plugged into an outlet to operate.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Product, February 8, 2008
By J. Murphy
The bike is great. It was very easy for my husband and I to assemble. It's very quiet. I read while pedaling. The only drawback is if you are shorter than 5'2", I don't think you would be able to reach the pedals very comfortably. I'm 5"2" and I just make it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best value you're going to find, hands down, February 10, 2009
By cock-eyed optimist (New Castle, DE)
Is this the highest quality exercise bike you're going to find on Amazon? Heavens no. Is it the best one you're going to find for under $200? Heck yes!
Assembly was time-consuming, although in my case it was complicated by the fact that my 2-year-old was "helping." Took about an hour to get everything together. Other customers have noticed that the bikes come damaged, and have blamed it on FedEx or UPS; I think the problem is actually inadequate packaging. A slightly larger box and a few foam inserts would do the job. My bike came with a small piece of the plastic cracked off, but it has no effect on the operation of the bike so I'm not concerned. Also one of the plugs that go in the end of the handlebars is damaged, and won't stay in.
One customer complained that, despite his being in only "decent" shape, the bike doesn't offer enough resistance; he either is in FAR better shape than he thinks, or has a damaged bike. My bike offers enough resistance at level 2 (of 8) to get my heart going nicely, and I can simulate hills by clicking to level 3 or 4 and really get puffing. Obviously a high-end professional model would offer programs to automatically adjust the resistance, but those bikes cost $800. This bike costs less than a quarter of that.
The seat padding is, as other customers have noted, just a tad thin; after an hour of riding, I have to spend a few minutes walking around, trying to get blood flowing back to my hindquarters. I may get some kind of foam to stick on the seat and see if that helps.
The bike is indeed quiet, although my particular model has developed a disconcerting noise at certain points of the pedal revolution. There's no grinding or change in resistance; just an odd hushed hum that happens for a split second. Something may be brushing against the internal components. That doesn't really speak well of the fit and assembly of the product, but in case you haven't been paying attention: this bike cost me $170, about $500 cheaper than any high-reviewed alternative.
Final analysis:
Cons: Shoddy workmanship and packaging, which have no bearing on operation; a less than ideal seat.
Pros: Quiet, smooth, good resistance, and above all, CHEAP AS FREE.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Not bad, but you get what you pay for., November 11, 2009
By Esquire (Oklahoma City, USA)
Most reviews have already detailed the positive aspects of this bike. For the most part, they are correct. So....I'll point out the drawbacks.

Initially, I really liked this bike. After owning it for 6 months, it has become a towel rack. Here is why:

1) It is EXTREMELY basic. The 'computer' features one button (RESET). I don't think the calorie counter is accurate at all. The 'computer' clips into place and comes off if you bump your knee on it.

2) The pedal movement isn't as fluid as the movement of a more expensive bike. It feels cheap.

3) I don't get a good workout on this bike. It's hard to explain, but I can spend 30 minutes on this bike and not break a sweat. I get a better workout on the recumbent bikes at the gym. Perhaps it is because it is magnet-driven?

4) The bike was really quiet for a month. Now it squeaks when pedaling, like the magnets or pedals are catching on something inside the bike. I'm sure I could take it apart and fix it, but you shouldn't have to do that to an almost-new product.

Overall, it is a DECENT product. However, I personally do not recommend it. If you plan to use this bike every day, skip this product and keep shopping around.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  If you want a basic, high quality recumbent bike, this is the one., February 8, 2008
By badger1 (Colorado)
The Phoenix recumbent bike is a basic bike for those of us who are not training for a triatholon :) The digital display shows elapsed time, speed, distance and calories. I use only the time feature and take pulse readings (on a handy gizmo bought on-line) to get a good workout. It is small enough to 'hide' behind the couch that separates the living area and the dining room. I am 5'6" and my husband is 6'4". The bike is relatively easy to adjust even for these extremes in height. I would recomment this bike for all but the serious athlete.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  great exercise bike, great price, July 7, 2009
By C. Roehm
I have had this bike for about a month and I love it. I use it daily. I wanted to write a review because there were questions about smaller people being able to use the bike. I am 5'1" and am able to reach the pedals without difficulty. My daughter is 4'10". I adjust the bike for her by pushing the seat in close. The bike has adjustment holes, but they don't go far enough for someone my daughter's size. You can drill an extra hole, or you can just do what I do- push the seat up. It's stable enough and doesn't make any noise.
There was someone who mentioned difficulty putting the rubber on the handles during assembly. I used a little cooking spray and they slid right on (wd 40 would work as well).
I had no trouble putting the bike together by myself. Very easy.
The seat is hard, so I bought a little pad to go over it for long workouts.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect for Beginners, April 8, 2008
By J. B. Houston (Calhoun, TN USA)
I am a beginner when it comes to any exercise machine. I've looked at tons of different bikes, but this one was great for the money. It took a little time to put together, but the instructions were very easy to follow. It works great! The calorie counter and such are not accurate but the timer and miles are right on the nose. It is very quiet and easy to use while watching tv or reading a book. I have found this bike to be the perfect purchase for beginners for the price. If I could change anything about this bike it would be the digital output. It is a little small and very basic. If you are just looking for a cycle to ride instead of trying to keep track of calories, this would be perfect for you!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Do Not Believe What You Read, November 20, 2008
By Mahatma (West Palm Beach, FL)
I always tell my wife before I buy something on Amazon.com, "I read the critques of others who bought the same item. They were positive. Do not worry because I know what I am doing when I buy these things on-line."

Except with this exercise bike. It arrived damaged and the bike was a challenge to assemble. I considered it to be a geniune piece of junk, but that is just my opinion. Amazon gave me a refund, but what a pain.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very good basic recumbent bike, October 26, 2009
By Alan (New Orleans, LA United States)
I have enjoyed using this product and it has all the basics down. It is well worth the low price. I disagree with some reviewers that say its resistance is too low for quality exercising. Either I am way more out of shape than they are, or they have a unit where the resistance has slipped and gotten loose, but in any event I find that even on just 2 the resistance is strong. And this is compared to a ProForm upright where I have to set it to 7 to get that same resistance. So I don't think it is just me and my weak legs; I actually think the resistance is fine. It compares favorably to a commercial bike I have used at a club, though without the bells and whistles of a digital monitor. This one just gives basic info.

I found the bike largely straightforward to build, but strongly agree with the reviewer who said to use a 14mm wrench instead of the spanner they provide. (I used a 14mm rachet wrench with extender for most steps, but don't use it for the domed screws or you will break off the caps--just use a regular 14mm wrench for that step.) I could not have built it to a tight, strong level with just their multi-tool. Also have a hammer on hand to tap the black plastic sleeve on the lower bar into place before screwing it tighter. The instructions seem to skip that step and do not explain that the black sleeve is inserted and tapped into the opposite bar before adjusting the length. The black square piece becomes a protective receptacle for the male bar (as a sleeve, flush with the female length-bar) rather than staying on the male bar as it is shipped. It is a pocket, conceptually. Then you use the two very short screws to hold it into place, not the longer screws which are already in those side holes when it is shipped (and I could find no use for the longer screws after, since those holes are filled with the short screws now, just deep enough to hold the black sleeve into place but still allowing the male bar to be slid to adjust for length). So remove the longer screws and, after tapping the black sleeve into place, replace them with the short screws they also ship.

The picture in the instructions mislead in showing the seatback to be of a certain shape. The upper part is actually wider, not narrowing as shown. Someone here on Amazon posted their own photos of an assembled bike, and I appreciate that, but note that they have fixed the seatback into an upside-down position by mistake (likely following the instructions' drawing too literally). This is wrong and causes the seat back to sit too low and not give enough support higher up the back. I would think that a tall person would find it uncomfortable if they have the seatback set upside down as shown in the private photos on this site. Instead, just assemble the seat back into the more intuitive position which makes it go higher up the frame, and you will be right. Other than these hiccups, the assembly instructions were quite good. Hope this helps.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Phoenix 99608 Magnetic Recumbent Exercise Bike BEST!, December 8, 2008
By J. Wysocki
I have went through 2 different exercise bikes before finally purchasing the Phoenix Recumbent Bike. This is by far the best exercise bike I have ever used! The package came to my front door very fast and the box was in perfect condition. Set up was a breeze compared to all the other bikes. It took me only about 45 minutes to put together. The bike is extremely quiet because it has magnetic resistance. It is sturdy and looks good too. Doesn't take up much space and is very very comfortable. Recommend this product to anyone who wants to enjoy a healthy, comfortable workout from a well-built, quiet, great value recumbent exercise bike.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Recumbent Bike, December 14, 2008

I did receive this item in a timely manner, but when I took it out of the box, one of the plastic sides was broken and cracked. (Pieces were broken out of the side.) I put the bike together to see if it would work. It worked, but made noises and it didn't shift to a higher resistence. VERY dissapointed!!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great buy, February 1, 2006

I was skeptical in buying a piece of cardio equipment for fewer than two hundred bucks, but this bike really is worth it. It has been durable and was easy to assemble. Big LCD screen to clearly see your progress and the adjustable magnetic resistance system is quick and easy to use. You can go from low to high intensity with a quick twist of the knob. The seat is comfortable to sit in and your hind side does not fall asleep and go numb like with a traditional bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Cheap and Effective, September 28, 2010
By Scott (Orlando, FL USA)
I bought this a while back and I've had a year to use it and it's held up just fine. I use it every day. I love the fact that the design isn't bulky and gives you a clear view of the TV. It doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles it's just an exercise bike and it has a manual turn knob resistance modifier which is great as I've owned 700 dollar bikes before that are useless when the digital display goes out. Having a manual turn knob prevents you from being stuck with a 700 dollar stationary bike with no resistance! The simplicity of the design allows for years of use. It has a small digital display that I never use or pay attention to, but even after 1 year of use the battery still works in it. The seat isn't that comfortable so it's best to get 2 cushions to make it more comfortable. This bike gets the job done for a cheap price. If the manufacturer is taking notice please remake this product with a wider more comfortable seat cushion with better handlebars.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Pedal fell off, threading is stripped. Anyone have a # for Customer Service?, April 20, 2010
By jaybesq (Brooklyn, NY USA)
I bought this late 2008 - and the whole family has used it extensively.
WARNING: if the pedal is slipping out of place, tighten it securely with a vise grip IMMEDIATELY. Delaying will cause the threading to strip on the arm, and since that was part of the pre-assembled chassis, it couldn't be easy to replace.
If anyone can post the customer service number from their manual, I would be mighty obliged. Can't find it online. Any ideas how to keep the pedal on after the threading is stripped is also appreciated. Otherwise, I gotta re-purchase the bike. Yes, I would buy it again, with all of its foibles (adjustment knob falling off and getting in the way, speedometer falling off, foot straps on the pedals periodically coming off) it was a great bike.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great deal, March 30, 2008
By L. Fulmer
I ride my bike about 5 days a week for 30-45 minutes each time. It was a great deal for the low cost! Time goes quickly! It's so quiet you can watch tv or read while you ride. The pedals clicked at first but when I set the seat back one spot, it stopped. I would definitely recommend this bike. It's great!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great quality, Great price, August 18, 2008
By siscaleo (Central Coast, CA)
I needed a basic, high quality recumbent bike after spraining my ankle per my physical therapist as I couldn't do my normal workout. I also live in a studio apartment and don't have a lot of space. This bike is perfect: high quality, low price, doesn't take up a lot of space, quiet, stable, & sturdy. Easy to assemble. It arrived quickly and in good condition. I couldn't find this bike at a store, so Thank You Amazon.com!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent cure for exercise boredom!, November 15, 2009
By Sylvia Wadlington (San Jose, CA)
If I'm not reading a book, I'm writing one. It's a great life, but unfortunately requires too much sitting. Everything above the waist gets plenty of exercise; everything below the waist occasionally walks to the bathroom or kitchen. I have tried T.V. exercise programs, joining a gym or just walking, but the problem is my short attention span; I just get so bored I can't keep it up. Tired of dealing with the guilt of failing to be responsible for my own health, I looked around on the net and discovered the Phoenix magnetic recumbent exercise bike, (where I live you have to be fearless or suicidal to ride a real bike and I am neither). The best price for the bike was at Amazon, so I didn't even have to fight traffic to get it, (another one of those fearless, suicidal things). Putting the bike together was easy and almost fun. They even provided a little multipurpose tool so I didn't have to ransack the kitchen drawers for a facsimile. The bike weighs over sixty pounds and is really sturdy, it can carry 250 lbs, so if my latest diet fails miserably I can still use it. It doesn't take up much floor space, about the same as a recliner and the leg length is easily adjustable so anyone in the family can use it. The most important thing about the Phoenix is that you can sit comfortably and read a book or watch T.V. while you peddle your way through whatever time you have allotted for exercise. Above all else, this is why I selected the Phoenix. I don't have to think about exercise or bounce around, I just peddle at a comfortable speed while I `m doing something that interests me. The bike has a digital readout that tells you how many miles you've ridden, how many calories you've burned and how long you've been at it. I can always find time to read a book and if it's a good book I have set a bell timer or I find myself doing seven and eight miles instead of the five I decided to start with. Physically I could feel the difference by the second day and after a week I found I wasn't making up excuses to walk beyond the kitchen or bathroom. By the second week I was becoming so disgustingly exuberant that my daughter and her husband were discussing the possibility of a joint adventure into exercise land via the Phoenix magnetic recumbent excise bike. The bottom line is did I get what I paid for? The answer is, I got a lot more than I expected for the money.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  ANNOYING, June 5, 2008
By LA REINA
BIKE CAME SHIPPED THROUGH AMAZON. JUST AS THE OTHER REVIEWS I HAD READ AND DISREGARDED, THE BIKE HAD BEEN DAMAGED IN SHIPPING. THE BOX WAS MUTILATED. I OPENED IT ANYWAY, HOPING IT WOULD BE FINE. THE BOX WAS SOAKED LIKE IT HAD BEEN DROPPED IN A PUDDLE AND IT CLEARLY STATED ON THE INSTRUCTIONS NOT TO GET WET. HAD A BIG HOLE THROUGH THE SIDE OF THE BOX. ANYWAY, OPENED BOX, TOOK EVERYTHING APART AND THE MAIN FRAME OF THE BIKE HAD A GIANT HOLE THROUGH IT. SO I HAD TO SHOVE EVERYTHING BACK IN THE BOX. THE ONLY GOOD THING ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE? I DIDN'T HAVE TO DRAG THE 60LB+ PACKAGE TO UPS, THEY PICKED IT UP FOR ME. DON'T REALLY KNOW IF THE BIKE IS ANY GOOD, I GOT A REFUND. I CAN TELL YOU THAT I WON'T BE SHOPPING THROUGH AMAZON AGAIN ANY TIME SOON.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  recumbent bikes STILL makes you sweat!!!, May 6, 2010
By july (california)
it was delivered on time. my boyfriend put it together & the tools were provided for him so it was quick & painless - only thing is that i'm only 5' 2" and it doesn't have a hole to snap on for short people like me. it still works, nevertheless. @ first my boyfriend thought that riding the recumbent bike was NOT going to make him sweat & boy! was he wrong. he said it was pretty good & not bad for what i paid for. my daughter & i enjoy it. we watch our dvr'd shows while riding which is basically multi-tasking, right? i even suggested this to my sister who's got 3 kids - that way she can have a bit of exercise while watching the kids play in the back yard. it's not heavy you can move it around. in short, buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  MUST BUY!!!, April 20, 2009
By M. Weeks
After a bit of reviewing several bikes and treadmills, I decided to go with a bike for a nice low-impact workout (back problems). I chose a recumbent bike for back support. Let me tell you I am glad I bought this bike. I have had it for about a month and I am still totally satisfied. I like to exercise while watching tv and this bike is silent...so I can hear. It is also very sturdy ~ I am over the weight limit and it holds me up just fine. I would recommend this bike to ANYONE looking for nice bike.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good deal, May 2, 2008
By KMG (Kaukauna, WI)
Very pleased. I use it whenever weather prevents me from walking outdoors. I am not a person who enjoys indoor exercise and have tried treadmill and eliptical machine but hated it and eventually stopped using them. This bike is quiet, can sit and watch TV or videos on my computer while I bike. I just put my laptop on a little table next to me. The foot straps are a good idea. If it folded up for storage it would be perfect, but it is not too difficult to push it to the side of the room.

unless your a superior biker and you want lots of bells and whistles this is how you should spend your money. this bike is just what the doctors told me to do to strenghten my knees without hurting my back. there is more than enough tension settings.i would never be able to do #8 for twenty minutes. it is very quiet and very simple to assemble. great value.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great bike for the price, June 6, 2009
By Franki (Tampa, FL)
This bike is a great deal for the price. It is very sturdy and seems well built. Only two (minor) problems I have with it. First, you need 2 people to adjust the length as one person alone can't do it. So if more than one person uses it and you're different sizes it could be a pain to adjust. I'm 5'0" and my boyfriend is 5'9". We keep it on the shortest distance all the time and because it's such an effort to adjust it when I use it I have to use two big fluffy pillows behind my back :) Not a really big deal I suppose. Second, the least resistance is quite tight. It feels like I'm getting more of a leg workout than a cardio workout but that's just my own personal gripe.

On average I do cardio 6 times a week between the gym, running and biking outdoors or using this exercise bike. I like to use this bike on days that for whatever reason I can't make it into the gym or if it's too hot outside, so this is great for that purpose! I think for the price it is a great bike and serves it's purpose...as long as you use it!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great value and awesome workout!, January 20, 2009
By Zippy Keyes (New England)
The bike is SUPER easy to assemble, fun to use, and surprisingly quiet! I love that it's so compact and lightweight -- it'll be easy to move onto the deck once warmer weather arrives. I was a little skeptical about the quality of the ride at first, but a 7 mile 'ride' quickly put any doubts to rest: the resistance and overall feel mirrored that of a traditional bicycle (minus the potholes, speeding cars, and being chased by the neighbor's dogs). ;D

Great product for the price -- It's ALL good!

A note about assembly: if anyone's having problems putting the foam handles on, I found that pouring a little Windex into and through the foam tubing worked wonders.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great investment, January 7, 2009
By S. Taves (NW Iowa)
This exercise bike is just what I needed. Easy assembly, quiet operation and provides a good workout for an amateur cyclist.

The reason I got the recumbent versus a traditional exercise bike is that the basement of my older home has a ceiling height of 5'11" while I stand 6'2". A traditional exercise bike would have left my head hitting the ceiling. Also, I do not like the traditional seat of a bicycle and really enjoy the full seat of the recumbent.

It really is whisper quiet. My breathing ends up being louder than the operation of the bike. My roommate and I were able to assemble the bike in less than 30 minutes. The tool that is included with the bike is a bit of hindrance in that it takes too long, so I ended up using a wrench, that greatly increased the speed of assembly.

It wasn't very hard to assemble, is very quiet and very comfortable to ride for long periods of time. Everything works as advertised, no surprises here. The electronics are not as sophisticated as the bikes at the gym, but they work well enough. Excellent value for the price.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  buy something with higher comfort & build quality, November 5, 2010
By JW
1 star for cost
1 star for silent operation
-1 star for range of difficulty
-1 star for comfort
-1 star for frame wiggle

The setup went well with easy to follow directions and detailed diagrams. The bike is quiet when pedaling. I get motion sick after riding this bike because the frame is moving with every pedal rotation. The seat is uncomfortably hard. There's not a large enough difference between the resistance settings. If I did it again, I would buy something with more comfort and a higher quality build - it would be worth it for the amount of time spent getting fit.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Very Happy, July 23, 2010
By MrsWombat
I ordered this item on 7/21/10, used the Free Shipping option, and it was at my doorstep the very next day. Obviously, I was amazed at how quickly the order was processed and delivered.

Assembly was very easy, as long as you follow the instructions as previous reviewers have also stated. It took us about 45 minutes to get it assembled. Unfortunately, the spring loaded knob was defective. Fortunately, getting the part replaced was also very easy as the item is covered by warranty. It was just a matter of calling the manufacturer directly, giving them the part number from the manual, my shipping information and the date I ordered it from Amazon. The replacement knob will be arriving within a week.

As stated by other reviewers, the foam grips for the handle bars were a little difficult, but really all you need to do is rub something on the handle bars to aid slipping them into place. I've read that some people used WD40 or Windex. We just used a little dish soap and with a little finagling, it went on just fine.

The little computer is good enough for us---don't expect a lot of bells and whistles. It has several different modes that you can scroll through with the push of one button. Perfect for what we need.

The bike itself when in use is so quiet!! Love the recumbent position. Love the size of the bike. Perfect for our little 750 sq. foot home. I read several reviews about the seat being uncomfortable. It's slightly padded so it's not that bad, but I can see that it could start to become uncomfortable after an hour plus on the bike.

Only four stars because of the defective knob, otherwise I would have given it five. Four and a half would be more accurate due to the ease of getting the part replaced.

Definitely recommend this for the casual workout. I feel I really got a great deal on this bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  low impact riding, February 4, 2009
By Ellen J. Janetka (clermont, florida)
I am very please with this purchase. It is sturdy yet moveable. The cmputer gives a good account of one's workout and there are many tension choices. This replaced a more expensive bike and proved to be quite comperable in function and result. It was fairly easy to put together. It is quiet and compact.
There was a problem with computer function but I called customer service and received the replacement part I needed. They were courteous and quick. My husband has even started to ride for his health.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Little old lady, June 4, 2008
By little old lady (Plumas County, CA USA)
I purchased the Phoenix 99608 to rehab my knee injured a few months ago. It's great! I couldn't ask for more features - they're easy to read and easy to set up. However, setting up the machine itself wasn't so easy. The holes on the seat back weren't aligned properly so it was a real task to install the back. The machine is quite heavy too, so if you can't lift a lot I'll be glad to send my 15 year old grandson over to set up your bike too! Operation was a bit noisy a first but some 409 strategically placed as directed in the instruction manual took care of that.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Bike arrived promptly. Just tested it ..., July 24, 2009
By KG (MD)
My bike just arrived within 4 days after placing order, and as mentioned by most of the previous reviews, it is pretty sturdy for its price, and very quiet. My downstairs neighbor must appreciate that. First test was an 11 mile ride -- I used my dumbbells for an upper body workout, and watched TV thru it. I weigh 210.4 lbs according to my bathroom scale, and I noticed that the seat creaks/squeaks if I don't sit "properly" on it.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because I am a female living on my own, and had to put this together all by myself, and I am not very handy. It was heavy, difficult to put both big pieces together, and thank heaven for the other reviewer who mentioned using a hammer to fit in the black plastic piece. Since I don't have any hammers lying around, I used my 5-pound dumbbell. Also thanks to the reviewer who mentioned pouring a little Windex through the foam handlebar tubings. I had to come back and go through reviews to figure out how to twist and turn it on. After the windex trick, it was a breeze.
I kept telling myself after all this huffing, puffing and callused fingers to assemble this bike - which was a workout on its own - I had better use it, and use it for a while. Overall, it is a good piece of equipment, and I was sweating after my workout. Now I need to gear my mind up to the thought of assembling the Gazelle Edge I bought on here as well ... Whew! God help me!
Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Exercise and watch TV!!, January 31, 2008
By Beth (Bennington, VT United States)
I bought this for two reasons: 1. I wanted a way I could exercise in the comfort of my own home, and 2. I read a review that said it was easy to put together. Upon arrival, I did find a crack in part of hard plastic, but it is only a cosmetic imperfection. The bike did prove to be relatively easy to put together. I would like to say I have been using it faithfully, but time is an issue. I do like the fact that I can either watch TV or even catch up on some reading while I am using this machine. Don't get me wrong, I can't stay on this thing for long. It does seem to provide a good workout and I look forward to making a greater effort to use it in the near future. After all, summer will be here before we know it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Not bad at all., January 25, 2010
By Xanatose (New York, NY)
I purchased the bike for my parent, who has a knee problem. She loves it. Though there are few quirks and need for improvement. For the price, it is definitely good household exercise machine. I live in apartment and the machine is quite enough to ride it without causing tenant below to rush up and complaint (however it does vibrate enough to not to use during wee hours).

As long as you are not trying to ride at 35+ m/h, ^_^ the machine is perfect for any novice or elderly person.

Another info - machine is made for someone who is taller than 5'6" (I think...). My parent is apprx. 5'4" and she have to put cushion behind her back to ride comfortably without over extending to reach the pedal, because height(or seat adjuster) is one hole too long.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for the price, January 18, 2010
By Marksan (Chicago)
Got this for my wife who cannot use an upright bike. She loves it.
It was easy to assemble and set up, although it could have been packaged a little better. A small piece of the plastic shroud broke off in shipping, but in no way impacted on function. It was small enough that I just glued it back on. The electronic display is handy with it's timer, distance and other functions. I like the scan mode, where it cycles through each function continuously.
The only improvement I would suggest is another adjustment hole or two to move the seat closer to the pedals. My wife is 5'2". The closest setting just makes it for her. Someone shorter may find it uncomfortable having to stretch for the pedals.
The seat and seating angle are quite comfortable. My wife can easily read or watch TV while riding. On the whole, we are quite happy with the bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A perfect cabin fever bike, December 10, 2009
By P. Cioe (Rock Island, IL)
I wanted something to use as a backup on winter days when I can't walk or bike outside. This suits my needs perfectly. It's quiet, so I can watch a Sopranos episode while I ride. As promised, it's easy to assemble. Speed, time, and calorie indicators are easy to read. And, best of all, you just turn a knob to increase the tension! If you're a low-tech walker or casual jogger/cyclist, this one's for you. Oh yeah...The price is right, too. It's a deal you can't refuse!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good quality for the price..., November 2, 2009
By judylynnsbooks (jamestown, ky United States)
I love this bike. I almost got a higher priced one because the price of this one seemed too good to be true! Plus it's free shipping if you get from amazon. Well, it is well worth the price. It's very silent which I find amazing. It doesn't take up as much room as I thought it would. The controls on mine work fine and it was easy to assemble.

The seat is not as comfortable as I like...most aren't on these bikes...but a cushion fixed that problem. It came in just a few days and I've already put a 100 miles on it. I could have put more miles on it if I had thought of the cushion earlier! I was afraid that I might have some back pain from this because of the shape of the seat and because I'm so short, but no back pain. It would be hard for anyone shorter than 5 feet to reach pedals though. If you get one and you are shorter, you would probably have to drill an extra hole in framework.

Overall this is a great bike and it's a great price!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Product for the price., September 13, 2009
By Justin Carroll (Washington State)
Purchased this bike to continue my exercise while I'm healing up from a running injury. The resistance levels on the bike leave nothing to be desired, I set it to 4 and exercise for nearly 2 hours a day on it and have been more then happy with the levels available. Haven't had any reason to raise it above that yet other then if I was only going to do a short work out. The construction of the bike is fairly well made, it's small enough to be stored away without taking up much room, but isn't very easy to move. The seat padding is pretty bad to say the least, but I just snagged a couch pillow for the back and the bottom of the seat and that easily fixed the problem. The computer doesn't have an off switch, but seems to turn itself off after a set amount of idle time. Was fairly easy to assemble under less then half an hour, at times it was difficult positioning the heavy components so that the other pieces could be added but it just took some ingenuity. So far after having this bike for a week and using it nearly 2 hours a day I couldn't ask for too much more, it's been quite good especially for the price while I heal up so I can get back to distance running. Also a huge plus is having your hands free so I've been able to play video games while exercising which just makes the time fly by.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Not bad for the money, September 10, 2008
By simple is good (Ames IA)
THe price is very reasonable for the bike. Putting it together wasn't so bad until trying to put both halves together. It's heavy, so it may require 2 person to easily put it together.

The seat is not easily adjusted once you set it up. The seat is comfortable, and the little monitor is perfect if you just need some basic readings like calories burned, milage, and etc.

All in all, the only thing I would wish for is that the seat could be more easily adjusted. Also, the little switch for the resistance doesn't seem to want to stay on. But other than that, it's not a bad bike for the money.

The exercise bike is excellent in design and seems to be of good workmanship, but unfortunately has already developed a noise when peddled that sounds like "something slipping" for lack of a better term. I have been to busy to call the company and ask about this. Dr. Sam Fadala over and out....

I purchased this "reconditioned" from Amazon. It was missing the 'computer'(display)In it's place there was only a cut wire. Did anyone even look at this before calling it 'reconditioned'?

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good bike, December 22, 2011
By jlc1082 (WESTPORT MA)
It was SO easy to put together, I did it all on my own in about 30 minutes. It is very lightweight to move if you want it somewhere else too. I was able to pick it up and carry it upstairs to the bedroom myself also. 29/yo female here. It does what I want it to do. Keeps track of time, mileage, speed and all that good stuff. The only problem I have with it is my own problem which is me actually using it. Even on the second resistance my legs start to burn after 5 minutes lol. I have now taken to a personal trainer but can see myself more motivated in using this much more when I strengthen myself through him. It is a great bike and a great price!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great little bike, March 29, 2011
By A. Schneider
I have an elliptical that I really like, however it is in my unfinished basement and rather noisy. I really wanted a smaller exercise bike that I could have upstairs so that I could use it while watching tv or even reading a book. I also wanted the ability to move it from the guest room (for storage) into the living room to use. I purchased a set of the furniature sliders and tada! It works beautifully. I've been using it a couple weeks now, it is nice and quiet, very stable and will fit tall people. I am 5'10'' (female) and I have longer legs vs torso. There still is a lot of length that can be extended. My 6'3" boyfriend can also use this bike with enough leg room as well. Great product for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Happy camper!, November 5, 2010
By bikerchick
I have never assembled anything in the house before but I decided I would try to put this bike together. It took me about an hour. I went really slow so that I wouldn't have to undo anything I'd started. The only thing I wasn't able to do was put the foam on the handle bars (I'll go out and get some WD-4o tomorrow). I'm 5'1 so the first thing I wanted to do was make sure that I'd be able to pedal on the first setting. Success. I'm very happy with this bike. My physical therapist has been after me to get an exercise bike for about six months now after a knee injury. Can't wait to get started!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Recumbent Exercise Bike, May 26, 2010
By Tenefox (Oregon, USA)
This is a great little bike that doesn't take up too much space and is easily maneuvered. It has seven adjustable settings and is very comfortable to sit in, especially while watching T.V. I received my bike a day earlier then it stated, which was great, and it came, unscratched, with all needed parts and instructions. I am extremely happy with this purchase and highly recommend this to anyone looking to workout indoors while relaxing in front of a T.V., staring out your window, or reading a good book.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  low profile, easy assembly, quiet, April 17, 2010
By rich rupp (spring hill,fl.)
It was easy to put together ,low profile, but while using it there was a noise comming from inside the right side cover, which is already assembled from the factory,I loosend the screws that secure the covers and placed a small piece of foam at the top of the right cover where it rests against the post, then tightend the screws. This moved the right cover out just enough to keep the belt from rubbing on it. Since then it has been just fine. For those comments about being too easy to pedal, they must have improved that feature because ours is on the lowest setting and not that easy .When first using ,could only go 4 to 5 min.It took about 7 to 10 days to work up to 10 to 12 min,and it's still on the lowest setting.Outside of that rubbing belt problem everything has been fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Value!! Just what I wanted for a great price, March 10, 2010
By Nick (Philadelphia, PA)
This is one of the best buys I have made in a while. This bike works great! It is very quiet, the resistance levels go from non-existent to challenging, and it is very compact and fits in my bedroom for when I want to ride it in the morning and watch morning sports news. I love the computer settings so I know how long I've been riding, how far and how many calories I've burned. Overall, great value and I would recommend this to anyone who wants an easy way to get a cardio workout in their home for a great price.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Bargain, December 14, 2009
By Army Aviation 1 (Illinois)
I was hesitent to purchase a recumbent bike at this low a price since the models I had seen at my local bike shop started at 4 times this price. I was however pleasantly surprised that this model turned out to be comparable in many ways to the more expensive models. It is well constructed with a sturdy frame and feels solid when being used at any friction level. The flywheel cover was cracked during shipment but a quick call to the toll free number had a replacement on its way. The friction settings, that are accomplished magnetically, are easily adjusted while riding and are very quiet allowing the user to listen to music or watch TV without boosting the volume. My only negative comment here would be that the highest setting is not as much resistance as I would like. The other item in the negative column would be the digital device that shows time, miles, calories, etc. It is difficult to read when in use and has no backlight. Mine occasionally will not shut off after the 4 minutes advertised in the user manual. Overall this is a great bike for the dollars and with Amazon the shipping was free!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great beginner exercise bike, November 7, 2009
By David J. Kirk
It works great and doesn't take up too much space. My wife and I are both able to use it, she's 5'6" and I'm 6'4". She's able to adjust it by herself.

Putting it together was pretty simple, took me about 1.5 hours.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Gets the job done. Great value., October 6, 2009
By Andrew J. Snyder
The product was easy to put together. I wasn't able to get the padded grips on the handlebars but I also didn't try very hard because they work just fine without them. I'm 230 lbs and it feels sturdy under my weight.

The electronic display is about as basic as can be: shows time, speed, calories, or distance. I would have liked to see RPM's on the display as well.

The max resistance isn't all that tough but its plenty sufficient for someone like me that isn't a fitness nut.

The dial for resistance seems to be sturdy but the jury is still out on how it will hold up. I've been trying interval training so I'm switching back and forth from maximum resistance to minimum resistance every minute. I feel like it might wear out or break eventually but its holding up just fine so far (~1 month).

Ultimately, this bike was a GREAT value. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a casual workout at a reasonable price.

By J.J. (usa)
I am so incredibly impressed with this bike. For the price, I expected it to be adequate, at best... but it is EXCELLENT. Quiet, smooth ride. Sturdy, comfortable, easily adjusted, and doesn't take up a lot of space. It's light enough to move without too much hassle. Digital readout is simple, easy to use, and thorough. This is one GREAT exercise bike, and for this price, it's a real bargain. Highly, highly, highly recommended.

I bought this bike a month ago and it is great. I like the low profile so that I'm not bumping my knees into anything. It's quiet and my thighs are shaping up rather nicely. I cannot believe the price. I came back and ordered one for my mother as well. My husband had no trouble assebling them and even he was impressed with the quality at that price point.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  It was a great buy for me, August 7, 2011
By Amazing Buyer Seller (Walnut Creek, CA)
After I bought this bike I decided not to review it until it has fully proven its worth. One year and several lost pounds later I can say that it was a great purchase. It is a very basic bike. It has no fancy stuff but does what you need it to do. It will tell you the number of calories that you consumed, it will run without much noise at all, it is reasonably comfortable to sit on, and it has been running for us for the last one year or more(hundreds of hours of use).

I will recommend this bike.

Received the exercise bike intact. Assembly instructions were easy to follow, with one exception regarding installing the two frames together. The bike hardware didn't look like the book. But it went together. Everything worked fine. Been using it daily for weeks and am quite satisfied. Comfortable to sit on and pedal.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Pretty good bike, May 1, 2010
By pandalee (Arizona)
It's been a couple of months now, and so far so good! The bike goes from being silent to making a very very low noise (certainly nothing to be upset over). It works perfectly, and I'm overall very happy with it.

I'm only 5ft tall, so I need to put a pillow on the seat (which is not comfortable anyway, so the pillow serves two purposes).

My ONLY complaint was about shipping. The first bike came crushed beyond use. The box was crushed, everything in it was crushed and bent, and I was forced to get a replacement. The second box was only marginally better than the first. The outside looked as though it had been tossed around and beat up pretty bad, but the contents were in good condition.

Had I purchased this as a gift, I would have been embarassed to present it in it's original box, but as it was for me, I was able to look past the horiffic packaging. For photos, see the Member Photo section up top.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent Macine at a Very Good Price, February 14, 2010
By Peter B. Degroot (Ashland, OR USA)
This machine is well-designed and well-made of quality materials. It is sturdy, compact, quiet and functions exactly as it is supposed to. Assembly was straightforward and everything fit properly. It took me about 50 minutes to assemble working at a leisurely pace. The levels of resistance are appropriate for me, but for someone who is young, fit and strong, the maximum may not be enough. Adjustment for different users of different sizes is not as easy as on some more expensive models I looked at locally, but it still can be done in less than a minute. The price is right and you can get free shipping from Amazon (regular shipping would be about $40).

4.0 out of 5 stars.  My New Recumbent Bike, November 11, 2009
By yakivegasman (Yakima, WA)
I was excited to replace my lazy chair with a recumbent bike as my first step to making TV time productive weight loss time. This machine is very quiet so I don't have that old wind whine that the older machines had. Assembly was smart enough for someone who hates "some assembly required" that I had it going in no time. It is as advertised! Perhaps my only beef is that the digital screen showing you how much you are burning and how far you've gone is that typical Black on Gray background which, as you know, makes it hard to read sometimes but that's just being picky. Really this is a great machine, just don't forget to turn up the tension once in a while or its just movement. :)

Was very easy to assemble. Bike is solid and quiet and allows me to read or watch tv while exercising because it doesn't jiggle all over the place and the counter isn't in the way of your vision (tv). Definately worth the money. Would highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best exercise bike ever!, October 16, 2009
By TX Aggie (Texas)
First off, I did the free Super Saver shipping and got it within four business days. It is very easy and simple to assemble; my dog could have figured it out. And when other reviews said this bike was quiet, they weren't kidding! It barely makes any noise at all. And the knob to change resistance works easily. I would recommend this to any family member that is looking for an exercise bike. Personally, I think I got a very good product at a really good price.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Bike Great Price Poor Packaging, May 3, 2012
By Consumer Reviewer
Don't let the poor packaging steer you away from this bike. I will ding the product for packaging but positives first:
Resistance on the bike is very adequate. Challenging for me. The seat isn't the best but a sofa pillow behind my butt makes it very comfy. Bam! The computer is simple and not sexy but does its job keeping cumulative data as you get on and off the bike all day long. Assembly was fun and may have taken me 2 hours solo. You'll need a wrench or even a drill-powered socket will make quick work of some of the nut turning. I needed a helper to thread the bar that connects the front of the unit with the rear of the unit. No biggie. The black plastic sleeve does live inside the front end of the bar. Provides support for the spring loaded adjuster. It is as quiet as all say. You can't hear it all while the tv is on (won't bother any tv viewers) but a dead quiet house and you will know somebody is on the bike. Agreed, a very acceptable level of hum. The profile of the entire unit is low and the appearance is very nicely designed. It is super easy to grab an end and drag across the room. No issue at all with weight or ability to transport. Read the manual. It taught me about the middle bar supporter wheel that screws in and why its there.

Negatives: The product box gets wrapped in cellophane, label slapped on, and shipped off. It really should be placed in an outer carton with styrofoam snug protection. My bike had a large crack on one cowl and outright chipped off damage to the front end. it was unsightly so I removed the pedals, and cowls, and got busy with super-glue and duct tape on the inside. Looks ok now. Took a while to repair though. Also, the inside wheel can rub against the inside cowl. I loosened a couple of the cowl screws and gently pushed the whole plastic unit over so that the wheel didn't rub anymore. I suspect that the size of the product box (relatively compact) coupled with the weight (64 lbs) must piss off some handlers in the delivery chain of this product. It was handled at least 8 times from my Amazon purchase to delivery to my house and who know how many times before that from China, to a container ship, etc etc, to Calif. The seller or manufacturer should look into who is damaging their products. Again, perhaps the protective carton re-packaging might help this problem.

Great product! Very satisfied! I love exercising on the Phoenix as does every family member. Would buy again or as a gift.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Plastic housing broken and seat is very uncomfortable, March 31, 2012
By rawraws (Colorado)
The plastic pedal housing was broken and cracked upon arrival. Due to this there is a large hole in the front of the bike and a crack that goes partially down the side. It doesn't affect performance though I'd prefer it not to be there as I have a dog and I'm worried the dog hair will eventually affect the internal workings.

Most importantly the seat is VERY uncomfortable. I am 29 years old and don't have any special seating requirements to be comfortable in my daily life. But after 10 minutes on this thing my butt was hurting! I had to keep readjusting just to not be miserable. A cushion is a must.

Finally the support bolt in the center of the bike is not long enough to provide proper support. When I use it on my hardwood floor the bike sometimes has a bouncing effect as it flexes up and down on the support bolt. If it was slightly longer it would make full contact with the floor and it wouldn't be a problem. But it's just a touch too short.

This bike is VERY basic. Which I expected. For the price you can't expect much fancier. But retrospectively I would have spent $25 more for the Stamina brand model that has a molded cushion seat and heart rate monitor built in.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Would Have been a 5 Star, December 30, 2011
By Tamara M. Naleid (Park Falls, WI United States)
I purchased the Phoenix 99608 after reading customer reviews that mainly gave the product high marks. I was not disappointed as the shipping was timely, assembly simple, and the bike itself is of solid construction.

My only complaint is with the resistance level adjustment as the level of resistance going from the lowest level to the next highest is a thigh buster. The resistance gradients going beyond the second level are not as extreme but there is no way that I could presently sustain an extended session in the second level. What I discovered is that I can twist the adjustment knob slightly up from the lowest level and find an acceptable resistance level before clicking in to the second level. With that intermediate adjustment I'm getting the increased resistance that is comfortable and hopefully I'll build up to the point that I can just click in to the second level. I'm hesitant to take the front cover off to expose the magnetic resistance set-up and determine if an internal adjustment could be made to the bike.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Recumbent bike, November 5, 2011
By K. Mitchell (Milford, NH United States)
This bike has worked really well for me - it is quiet and rides smoothly. the only thing that gave me trouble was when putting together, I was never able to get one of the bolts into the underneath part of the seat - there are four and I could only get three in - the hole was a little off.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great product for those unable to use a traditional upright bike., August 20, 2011
By Swimchick
This exercise bike was easy to assemble -- it took an hour and I was able to do it by myself. It's quiet and comfortable to use. The recumbent seat does not aggravate my chronic back injury, unlike traditional bike seats. Also, I am recovering from a broken ankle and the recumbent seat allows me to work my legs without putting too much pressure on my injured foot. I'm very satisfied with this product.

One more thing, tracking information wasn't included in my order and when I inquired about it through email, Amazon responded quickly and assured me it would arrive on time which it did.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  fun, durable, easy to use, August 15, 2011
By S. L. Dowell (Durham, NC)
I expected a sub-par product at such a low price, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that this bike is very attractive, durable, and comfortable to sit on. The provided computer looks a little flimsy, but it tells you your speed, time, distance traveled, and calories burned. (If you're worried, assembly is straightforward and takes about 20 minutes.) The 8 levels of resistance will be more than enough for most folks. I get a good workout on level 1 using a decent speed.

Slap this thing in front of the television or get an exercise desk for your laptop, and the time will fly by while you pedal. You won't even realize you're working out. Everybody in my house loves it.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Broken!, September 30, 2011
By Leah Quezada (Sacramento, CA)
First, let me say that I know it's stupid to not have opened the box right away and instead had it sitting around for months. Mea culpa.

However, I finally did open it to set it up, and it's incredibly broken in the front. Whoever boxed it was aware of this, because some parts are held together by rubber bands and tape! I really wish I had opened it when it arrived so I could return this broken piece of crap.

Edit: I contacted the company and they were able to send me the replacement parts necessary, but the bike still isn't great. The computer part already broke which I've read is common as it's very cheap, the seat wobbles and some parts were difficult to put together.
