5.0 out of 5 stars.  Lightweight, Reliable and Safe, May 28, 2008
By Bug Eater (Portland, OR)
I've used this lock for a year and have had no problems at all with it. It's so convenient to not worry about keys, and if my friends need to borrow my bike I can just tell them the combo over the phone, so they're happy too. Just make sure it is long enough before you buy, because mine works on my commuter bike but is too short to accommodate both the front wheel and frame on my mountain bike. Oh, and DO remember to close the weather guard so if it rains the numbers don't get wet and slippery...that can be a minor annoyance.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Failed to work even once., June 21, 2007
By C. Chesser (New York, NY)
This lock comes with a factory `0005' combination that the user is supposed to reset before using. After following the instruction to reset it, once I reattached the `U' portion to the base I was never able to reopen it. The seller, Seasonal Outfitters, was of no assistance. Kryptonite said it would replace the lock, but while waiting for that I can't park my bike, and once I get the replacement I will always be fearful that I will lock my bike with it and be unable to reopen the lock. How sad that such a simple device (at a premium price) fails right out of the box.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Didn't work for me, September 1, 2009
By slevin (New York, NY USA)
I set the combo per instructions. Tested it 3 or 4 times to make sure it worked like I got it. Then a little later just before a ride I tried it one more time and it wouldn't open. One of the dials is really hard to turn, so maybe that's the cause. For some people it works fine, others it doesn't, so just know that you are taking a chance. I'm returning mine and going for a key lock.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Lock!, June 22, 2009
By QN
The worst thing about having a heavy duty U-lock is having to carry it around. This Kryptonite lock with the addition of the mounting bracket solves that inconvenience. I have a Trek 7.3 FX 17.5" and it mounts on the bicycle perfectly. It goes on my bicycle next to the rear wheel by angling the bracket 90 degrees. It doesn't interfere with my cycling motion and has about an inch of clearance next to the rear wheel. The lock does chatter a little bit when it's mounted, but I solved that problem by using wall insulation and duct tape. Now the mounting bracket holds the lock securely and quietly. Another annoyance with the lock is the difficulty of rotating the numbers sometimes. The best way to get around this is by only changing one number when you lock your bicycle. This makes it very easy to open it quickly. Overall, this item still deserves five stars!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Didn't last, June 7, 2009
By Stephen Fowlkes (Philadelphia)
After about three (3) weeks of use the plastic latch knob fell off (while I was riding) leaving me stranded and unable to use the lock. Maybe I got a bad one, but beware.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Usable but not recommended, June 7, 2007
By Kat (NC, USA)
I found that the numbers are hard to change, they are not very smooth. Also it really is not long enough, I would recommend one that is longer, this one hardly fits around the frame and post at the same time.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Do not buy this lock, June 8, 2010
By Jonathan Levine (Allentown, PA USA)
This lock broke and became effectively useless after two weeks of moderate use, averaging about two locks/unlocks a day.

I had the same problem a few other reviewers had: the plastic knob to open the lock broke off, which renders the whole thing a rather ugly paper weight. I'm now living 300 miles from where I bought it (I just moved), so I can't return it there. And I'd send it in under warranty, but I urgently need to buy a new lock. Thanks, Kryptonite.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Years of Service, April 24, 2011
By R. Miller (San Francsico, CA United States)
I purchased this lock in 2008. I've used it on my bike, outside, in Alameda, CA (plenty of rain). I've had to oil it occationally to keep the tumblers moving. The one sign of wear is the rubber gaskets at the top of each end of the "U"; they've weathered and cracked, but it doesn't seem to have affected the lock.

I think that as long as I oil the mechanism every now and then this lock will last another 5 years.

It's soooo great to never have to worry about a key.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works for me, August 6, 2010
By Laurel
Looks like people either love or hate this product. I've had mine for over 5 years since the whole bic pen controversy was widely televised on the news media as a `how to' in popping ULocks for thieves. I appreciate that I don't have to carry a key for it. I bike commute, and ride regularly for errands and fun, so I can vouch that this one can last when not abused and maintained just like anything else.

The black plastic cover for the dial lock slipped off years ago, and it went right back on, but I noticed it's removal in no way altered the locks performance so I just tossed the unnecessary component/dial cover.

I'm able to lock my rear wheel and frame to a post and then run my cable through the front tire, so I don't see the big deal about it being smaller than a traditional Kryptonite lock for which you also need a cable, but hey, if you want to carry the extra weight that's a personal decision.

I've never had a problem with the dial sticking on a number, and if you do I would recommend some WD40 before you return it and go through that hassle.

I wonder if they changed their manufacturer since I purchased mine because many are complaining of a shoddy product. I was just checking Amazon for a friend and after seeing these reviews I probably won't recommend this lock because so many people are complaining about it. Kryptonite should listen up and make this product more reliable or offer at home-based solutions to these people's concerns. It's unreasonable for someone who uses their bike daily to be expected to be lockless while Kryptonite processes the exchange.

That being said, I think this product is worth a try if you lose keys, forget to bring keys or if you've ever asked others if they have seen your keys while their actually in your hand. Happy riding everybody!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Six months of hard city use; no problems out of this full-featured u-lock, October 3, 2010
By Mitchell
U-lock security.
Handy combination.
Manageable size.

Seriously guys, could you ask for more? This basically just as secure as any other $40 u-lock out there, but DOESN'T require any keys. Furthermore, this model is plagued by an inordinate amount of plastic (unlike the cumbersome OnGuard Bulldog Combo) and is quite easy to carry.

Personally, the little plastic frame attacher didn't work out on my bike, but I just slip it into my belt and I'm ready to ride.

Speaking of which, I've used this lock for over half a year locking my bike up in Seattle. The numbers are still spinning just as they always have, no sign of the black "unlock lever" failing, and in general the lock is going strong. I'm not sure what hell the other reviewers are putting their locks through to make them break (perhaps Kryptonite had a bad batch or something).

Bottom line: Ultimate U-Lock.

I received this lock in two days after placing my order. It seems quite sturdy and the combination feature is really good. No need to carry another key for this. I have been using it for more than a month now and would highly recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Not bad for the money, February 10, 2010
By rat bat blue (Greensboro, NC United States)
I paid less than $[...] for this lock on sale and for that kind of money a Kryptonite lock is a great deal. That said, this lock has a couple of shortcomings in my estimation that have to do with the combination wheels. First off, they are generally difficult to turn. They just do not have sufficient knurling to facilitate good thumb/finger traction. Second, the combination wheels are chromed and the indented numbers are filled with black paint. This makes the numbers almost impossible to read under the glare of a street light due to the reflectivity of the chromed surface. Other than those two complaints, I am very happy with this lock, it's solid, compact and yet large enough (barely) to allow me to secure the frame and front wheel to every rack I have encountered without removal of the wheel. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000LPHO2Q/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_title

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good lock, September 28, 2008

Although it's a little shorter than the standard Kryptonite, it is lightweight and works well. I have had no problems locking or unlocking it, as opposed to my last U-lock which stopped functioning and had to be sawed off.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  You get what you pay for..., October 25, 2009
By Steph M (San Francisco, CA USA)
Received this lock a couple weeks after I bought it. Worked fine for six days until the black plastic end came loose, leaving the rotating dust guard free to fall off, and then a day later, the sliding release button fell off and was lost while I was riding. Needless to say, I would NOT recommend this lock.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent performance and design., March 21, 2011
By CHug Munechow (New Haven, CT USA)
I have been beating on this lock for years now. Works perfectly every time. Perfect weight and size to sit in the font pouch of my messenger bag. Setting the four digit combination was simple. Not having to find keys is a HUGE advantage for those of us jumping from post to post. Very snug against a meter would make it hard to pry upon if placed correctly. Was NOT thrilled with the mounting options, but the lock is laid out well so other modes of carry are easy to devise. Rubberized "U" and bar have not worn and protect the bike from dings, etc... The only part that has aged poorly is the grommets on the "U" that meets the combo bar to keep water out. They are getting a bit worn and will need replacing soon.

A+ product. I'm amazed that others have had issues.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  I was sold a used AND broken product, September 26, 2010
By Robert Dodde (Ann Arbor, MI United States)
The bicycle lock I purchased (Kryptonite Kryptolok Combo Standard Bicycle U-Lock) was delivered not in a package, but loose. The button on the lock next to the Kryptonite name wasn't even on it, it was already locked, and the combination was not given to me nor instructions for how to change the combination. After FINALLY finding the instructions to reset the lock on Kryptonite's website, I found out that the factory setting for the combination is 0005. I set it to that combination, but it didn't open, so somebody already changed the combination on the lock. Even if it did work, though, the reset pin key wasn't mailed with the lock, either, so I couldn't even reset it if I wanted/needed to.

I can't believe these people (Warehouse Deals) are allowed to sell an opened, obviously used product on Amazon. Horrible company.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Stay Away from this one, September 16, 2011
By a creature of the wheel (Walnut Creek, CA USA)
Worked for a week, then my daughter called me from the store, could not unlock her bike. An hour later, after driving to meet her and banging on the lock for 20 minutes, it finally opened. Next step would've been to cut it off. It's reckless to sell a lock this bad, if she'd been on her own the bike would've been left overnight "locked up" by this junky lock. Totally different than the one I've used successfully for years so Kryptonite must've outsourced the manufacture. Bad idea. I returned it and switched to a key version, different manfacturer.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  ineffective mount=lost bike lock, August 31, 2011
By Eric Jensen (San Jose, CA, US)
Please note that I am writing about the lock mount, not the actual lock. The lock worked fine and I liked it.

However, the accompanying lock mount did not please me. Although I carefully followed the installing instructions, the mount was unable to securely fasten the lock to my bike. The fastener for the mount is a flimsy piece of black metal that resembles that of a quick release for a bike wheel, but is of much lower quality. As a result, the lock would often fall off while riding.

On a 40-mile bike ride through Sacramento yesterday, I stopped at the Amtrak station to check train schedules. Upon going to lock up my bike, I looked down and noticed that my lock had fallen off! Even after retracing my path for several miles, I could not find the lock.

I purchased this lock on July 27th 2011, and only a month later, it is gone and my money is wasted. I am frustrated and don't understand why Kryptonite, maker of quality locks, would include a mount that does not work!

My main point for anyone reading this is to be wary of the mount--if I decide to order a replacement, I am definitely carrying the lock in my backpack from now on.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love the Combo Lock, August 29, 2011
By JMM (Washington, DC)
It is so much more convenient to have a combo lock than a key lock. I lost the key to my last lock, and this was a much better idea for me. My friend and I go bike riding together and it always takes her forever to lock and unlock her bike with her key. The combo is a cinch. And the U-lock is very secure. I pair it with a cable to get both wheels locked up.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Get it., August 29, 2011
By Bradley D. Hendrickson (Minneapolis, MN)
The biggest selling point for me on this was it being a combo lock -- hard to pick, hard to forget a key. The combination is user-(re)settable, so just use something memorable -- e.g., the last four of your SS number, or PIN, or phone number, etc. -- and you're good to go. You can, as one reviewer mentioned, loan it out easily. Or somebody can pick your bike up for you if need be. The advantages to a key-less lock are myriad, and overall I am quite pleased.

Kryptonite ranks this lock's Security Rating as an 8 on a 1-12 scale. That...seems about right. Don't leave it overnight in a high-crime area it as the only thing between your fancy-pants $3k carbon fiber road bike and an aspiring acquisitionist, but as a decidedly reliable, that-ain't-goin'-anywhere lock, it's long enough to secure your frame and front tire(!) to something solid, and it strikes me as strong enough to deter a would-be thief into finding easier prey (and, let's be honest: that's really what this is about).

Aside from the underwhelming mounting instructions, the one rather small downside is that when locked, the U still has enough play to wiggle and rattle a small bit whilst riding -- nothing huge, but not airtight like I'd expected from Kryptonite. Oh well: I'm still glad I got it and would indeed recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Reliable lock, works well, August 10, 2011
By Kdizzle
I needed a lock for my new bike, so I turned to Amazon after discovering over a 50% savings on here in comparison to my local bike store, where they wanted $80-$90 for this lock!! Got a great deal, free shipping and the lock works great. It's super handy not having to pull out my keys just to lock/unlock my bike. There is even a dust cover over the combination code portion, to keep it clean and dry. The only drawback, like most u-locks, is that it's hard to lock to some posts/trees/etc as the lock itself isn't very long. Overall, definitely worth the $$ and happy with this product!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  keyless U lock: less is more, May 14, 2011
By Chicago bike rider
a U lock without a key is a great idea. In the summer I commute by bike to work. The lock is so reasonably priced by Amazon that I can permanently leave the lock at the bike rack in front of my work. This allows two things: 1.It allows me to not have to carry the lock in my bag. 2. It also allows me to not have to dig thru my bag looking for a lock key hidden in the folds of my work cloths. Maybe these steps sound like little annoyances but if you enjoy trying to find ways to make your urban commute more efficient and simple this might be a good place to start. Thanks Amazon and Kryptonite.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best combination U-lock, April 19, 2011
By J. Seder (California)
I've used my Kryptonite combination U-lock daily for a full year. I used another brand of combination U-lock for two years before this. The Kryptonite lock is superior.

Even after a year of daily use the combination wheels and latch button are reasonably easy to operate. I had trouble with the competing brand from the start... The competing brand since improved their design, but the Kryptonite is still easier to operate.

The Kryptonite frame mount is easily installed and removed (unlike the competition) and securely holds the lock in place.

The plastic material used by Kryptonite holds up quite well. The competitor's rubberized coating turned to sticky goo when activated by sap from trees hanging over a public bike rack.

A beefier shackle would be comforting, but this lock properly used will discourage all but serious thieves. (See "Sheldon Brown Lock Strategy" for instructions - lock the rear wheel through the rear triangle to a rack.)

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Doesn't lock properly, June 22, 2011
By J. M. Palacios (Coral Springs, FL United States)
The first time I put this lock on my bicycle and went for a ride, I didn't have the combination set and trusted the button to hold it together while I rode. Big mistake, as the U came off and bent the rear derailleur on my new bicycle. OK, that was mostly user error, so I won't blame them. After that I made sure that I scrambled the combination every time I put the lock back on my bicycle. Turns out that's not good enough. I had it locked and stored on my bicycle, and the U fell off again a few months later. I never found it again, and I know you cannot trust a lock that unlocks solely with vibrations. Thieves would have no problem getting it open! If you get this, buy the anti-theft protection, because you will probably need it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love the Combo Lock, August 29, 2011
By JM (Washington, DC)
It is so much more convenient to have a combo lock than a key lock. I lost the key to my last lock, and this was a much better idea for me. My friend and I go bike riding together and it always takes her forever to lock and unlock her bike with her key. The combo is a cinch. And the U-lock is very secure. I pair it with a cable to get both wheels locked up.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  The review I wish I had seen, May 25, 2012
By Snake Doctor
I spent a long time researching bike locks. I was trying to balance price, weight, size, stowing method, and of course, security/strength. Every lock seems to have its faults and you certainly can't have it all. A couple of words of wisdom:

- Unless your bike is particularly attractive, you just need to be more secure/harder to steal than the other bikes on the rack. And there will almost always be people with worse locks than this one (or locks that are used incorrectly).

- I highly recommend using the "Sheldon Brown Lock Technique" (Google it) with any U-Lock you buy.

- Having any lock is better than no lock. In the time I spent researching, I could have been taking my bike out!

I love that this is a combo lock so that I don't have to carry a key with me. I bought the Kryptonite Kryptoflex 1007 Bicycle Security Cable (10mm x 7-Foot) to go with it, thinking it would be useful to lock the front wheel as well, but honestly that's more pain than it's worth.

I for one like the mounting bracket that comes with this lock. Make sure though that you will have enough room on your frame with the lock in the bracket to put a water bottle, pedal (and not hit it), etc. The bracket has a joint in it so that you can turn it to a different angle if that works better for your bike. I turned my bracket so that when the lock is in it, the combination side is closer to the front of the bike and "U" part of the lock is nearly parallel with the bike aiming towards the back. I did have to buy a new nut for the bracket's bolt at Home Depot though (just take it with you). For some reason, I couldn't tighten the bracket enough around my bike frame with the nut it came with. This fix made it work perfectly. One word of caution, I did have the lock fall out of the bracket once when riding down over a curb when crossing a street. It's only happened once and I'm now more aware of that when I go over bumps just in case.

I can't really speak to the security of the lock. My bike hasn't been stolen :) It seems pretty sturdy and the numbers turn smoothly. I had read a lot about keys getting stuck in locks, so that's another problem avoided with the combo. I keep the bike and lock indoors for storage, so I also cannot speak to its durability.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  POS, May 19, 2012
By sparky (Santa Cruz, CA USA)
What a royal pain in my arse. NEVER AGAIN, EVER, will I buy this lock. Biked downtown. tested the lock twice before I left. Locked it. Cam back to ride home. The darn thing would not work, even after trying everything for 30 minutes. I had to take a cab home, get my truck and pick up my bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good lock, April 7, 2012
By Kyle
I've only used this a few times but it has been great so far. It seems a lot more secure than the cable lock I was using. It was easy to set the combination. I haven't used the frame mount yet, I just carry the lock on my handlebars while riding and that works okay for now.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Found a lock in my garage and figured out the combo easy ..., April 1, 2012
By stjohnr
So I moved into my house and there was this lock left behind. I have the Kryptonite evolution lock (with a key) so never bothered to try and use this one. So earlier today I figured why not try and open it just to see if I could. Turns out it wasn't very hard. Once you push the little plastic knob the dials will wiggle, well it turns out they only wiggle if it's the wrong number. So after about half an hour of playing with it I figured out the combo and it popped open. So if your using this in a high traffic area where people will walk by often I wouldn't see this as a problem, but if it's going to be locked away somewhere where people could sit and spend some time with it (even a couple minutes a day) then I'd go with a keyed lock instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good service for four years and counting, January 30, 2012
By sonnojoi (Minneapolis, MN USA)
I'm pleased to see this model is still available, I've been using it happily since June 2007. I've had a lot of bikes stolen with various other locks but as far as I know no one has even tried to break this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Should have listened to the other bad reviews..., January 2, 2012
By ibkund
I had read several bad reviews about the dials not turning/being difficult to turn, etc., but thought I would give Kryptonite a chance since I had used the brand in the past with good results. I should have listened. The dials are not only difficult to turn, they get stuck easily rendering the piece of crap unusable. I am returning it and buying the bulldog which my girlfriend has and uses with no problems.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Poorly manufactured and unreliable!, December 22, 2011
By Jennifer R (Santa Monica, CA)
I had this lock for a few weeks and then it worked fine. Then, one day, the combo (that I've used for weeks) wouldn't work. Somehow, when fussing it a bit when the lock mechanism seized up, the combination had reset itself! Luckily, it was only two numbers away, so I was able to GUESS the correct combo -- otherwise I would have been left stranded without a working bike lock.

Unfortunately, thinking this was a fluke, I continued to use the bike lock under the new combo. Sure enough -- it happened again. This time, the lock was ON my bike and therefore, I was stuck for two hours on a street corner trying to guess which number(s) was off. Needless to say, I'm never using this lock again. It's obviously VERY poorly manufactured.

Also, on numerous occasions, the lock fell out of it's holder while I was riding. I'm just regretful that I ever wasted time going back to find it...

4.0 out of 5 stars.  rough locking mechanism, December 6, 2011
By john sciarra (Miami, FL)
The lock works, but the mechanism is rough. The dials are hard to turn and it requires a bit of force to move the latch release. I think it is just a symptom of low quality manufacturing. I use it for communting, and yes I have lubed it up, but it has not helped much. Nice to not have to carry a key.

Update. I have used it regularly for months now. The mechanism is much easier to use. It has really eased up. The dials turn easily and the latch is smooth. It must not be well finished at the developing world machine shop. I moved it up to 4 stars. Would buy it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  convenient, December 4, 2011
By Vanessa B
After my old cable lock was nearly stolen (luckily my neighbor scared them off), I decided it was time for a U lock. I never wanted a U lock because it meant I would need a key, and they're big so I didn't know how I would carry it to and from. I like this lock because you can set the combination yourself, so no key. And it has a little plastic part that rotates over your combination, so somebody walking by wouldn't even know it's a combo lock. It comes with an attachment that I used so it clips onto by bike, below the seat in the triangle area the frame makes. It's sturdy there, I go up and down curbs and it stays on. So this U lock is convenient because it travels well, and I don't need a key.

One disadvantage of a U lock vs. a cable lock is that I can't lock it up to a tree, it only works on standardized bike racks or street/parking signs. I have successfully locked two bikes to a bike rack using my U lock, but it's not easy to do.

I've been using it for a few months now, pretty much daily, and it's held up. I don't have a problem with the numbers being hard to turn.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Simple and Effective, November 29, 2011
By Ian
I bought this for my girlfriend, who never seemed to have her key when we wanted to go for a bike ride. The combination was easy to set, and the lock works great! The weather cover for the dials is a nice touch, along with the carrying attachment's ability to rotate 90 degrees. The lock seems very tough, and, probably more importantly, it looks tough as well. Factor in the great Amazon price, and this is a good buy.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Not reliable, October 14, 2011
By Philip H Newman, MD
This lock was a disaster. I only had it 3 months before it "seized" up and couldn't be opened. Luckily, I noticed that it had become stiff and resisted opening so I tested it off the bike. Once locked it could not be opened. You could feel the mechanism release part way but not enough to undo. If this had happened on the bike, I'd had had to saw it off somehow. The company replaced promptly with a keyed lock and I'm content but would warn against buying this combination lock despite theoretical advantage of not having to track the key. I did have to pay shipping to return the defective lock!

so far so good, its small enough I haven't had to attach the lock holder I just lock it between the frame while riding and it doesn't get in my way. I still have my bike!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  the zero effect, October 7, 2011
By R. G. Brown
over the past 3 years have purchased two of these combo locks. these locks are primarly used for locking big metal fenced gateways on our property. provide contractors with the combo and they can access the property when we arent home (then change it after work is done). decided to get a 3rd combo lock and the set-up code combo provided didnt work. was told to return the combo lock but it just didnt seem worth the time. so decided to just figure out what the setup code was. wife & son thought i was crazy but after several weeks of off and on attempts the setup code was 9191 which leads me to believe this lock was returned and resold without zeroing out the previous code. other than that the combo locks work well despite getting constantly rained on. keep the little revolving door closed and occasionally wd40 them and they have worked effectively in all weather conditions. what i like about this combo lock is, it is easy to change or reset the code to something else which is done from time to time. would highly recommend and will repurchase again when needed. giving it 5 stars because the product works with no problem. dont think it was necessary to downgrade my rating because the setup code wasnt correct. no problem with seller and it arrived as promised. just dont forget you new code after setup.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Do not buy, August 31, 2011
By Eric Jensen (San Jose, CA, US)
I am very unsatisfied with this lock. After about three months of use, the lock "broke", or became ineffective. It began to open when the combination was set to any number making it useless. I sent it in to get a new one per the lifetime warranty, and just received the replacement in the mail. This one does not work well, either. The digit in the thousandths place (the first of four number dials) is very difficult to turn. More importantly, I cannot even get the lock open after setting it the factory setting of 0005. So, both locks of this model have not worked.

I had originally started buying Kryptonite in college, and thought they were a high quality brand. My opinion of their products has changed, and will no longer purchase their products in the future.
