4.0 out of 5 stars.  Pretty Good for the price, January 15, 2008
By digitalzen (USA)
I have had one of these for about a year now, riding with and using it at least three times a week. The battery life is looooooooooong. Really economical. It was probably a good 6 months before I changed out the batteries, and that was only because I was paranoid. The center of the beam is small, and there is not a lot of radial light outside of it, but it does go out far enough ahead of you to see what's in front of you with plenty of reaction time. In city streets this thing is perfect. If you have to go in pitch darkness it probably won't be enough. However, for the price and the quality, it's worth getting two. They are small enough that they don't take up much room on your handle bars; I have two of them on mine. I will warn you though, the clip where it locks into the frame broke on one of mine from taking it on and off too much. I was able to rig with no problem.
Pros: Long battery life. Definitely visible to other drivers.
Cons: Locking mechanism broke on one, not bright enough for pitch dark.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  release clip easy to break, April 5, 2008
By Paxxy
I purchased this light from a bike shop. I liked how clean and simple it looked. Was happy at first- installation was easy. It was not intuitive how to quick-release the light to remove it and eventually I popped it off and popped it back. What I didn't realize was that in doing so, I broke a very delicate tiny plastic tab that prevents the light from sliding off of the bracket. (another reviewer did the same -so its not just me)

I went on my first test-ride. Went over a bump and the light flew off the bracket and onto the street, breaking into 4 pieces plus 2 batteries. Spent 15 minutes under the streetlights searching for the parts- eventually found them and somehow was able to put the thing back together. One of the batteries was a bit crushed. Wedged a piece of aluminum foil into the bracket to get the thing to stay in place. Used the light a few times on my commute. Performance was not so good- pretty dim-even for riding under city lights.

A month later the light wouldn't work and I realized that the crushed battery had leaked acid all over the inside of the product, corroding it and destroying it.

Well, that was the end of my story- a bad experienced cause by an unintuitive and delicate quick-release tab.

I wouldn't recommend this light.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  good for cars to see + strong mounting, November 16, 2008
By David Diez (Boston, MA)
This light is to be seen, not for you to see. For that purpose, it is excellent. When it is on flash mode I can see the light strongly reflecting off of signs about 100m away. The OPTiCUBE really works quite well, being easily seen from many directions (at least 180 degrees).

I found the mounting to be very good long term but confusing initially. Now that I know how it works, it is quick on/off as needed. I can see how users broke the "docking snap" when first figuring out how to take off the light. However, I think if one is patient and careful not to force the light off the mount -- it slides off easily when done right -- this should not break easily and should become second nature quickly. The mounting mechanism (which screws on) has been very secure and doesn't budge during riding.

I've had the light for >4 months. I recently got the Planet Bike Beamer 3 LED Light for a second light since I've taken to more trafficked roads in LA. The Cateye is better all around but especially for being seen. I use it in flash mode and leave the Beamer as always on so cars can gauge my speed better.

For a rear light, I use three lights, two of which are Cateye TL-LD130 LED Bicycle Tail and Safety Light (Red) and Planet Bike Blinky Super Flash Blaze LED. The Super Flash is superior in every way.

Update: I've now mounted this light on my helmet since the mount is slim enough to strap through the holes of my helmet. I've found this to be a preferable way to use the light since I can easily flash cars that are approaching so they see (and don't breeze through a stop sign into me). I'm in the market for another one of these and also reflective tape. The light has held up well and it is certainly preferable to my Planet Bike light.

If I had to buy all my bike lights over again, I would get two of these and two Super Flashes.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great commuting light, great price, and works as a flashligh too!, September 17, 2008
By Josh L. (SLC, UT)
Bought this for my girlfriends new city bike, and I am a little jealous because it is a far better (and half the price) then my stylish Knog (the price you pay for style)... I'll probably get one for myself and shelf the Knog.

Bright and compact, super easy to install, great battery life, easy to use, and the clip works very well. Some complain it is too easy to remove, but that is just silly. The light stays on when you want it to, and comes off when you need it too... I have used it as a flashlight a few time around the house and once while out on a ride when repairing a fender support on her bike!

If you are worried about getting it swiped when you have your bike locked up, just unclip it, it is tiny small enough to fit in a pocket or a small bag... plus at the price, while a bummer if it was stolen, the cost to replace wouldn't make you cry.

All in all, this is by far my favourite light for riding around the city.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good product, October 13, 2007
By Cameron
This is the first light I have owned for a bike so I cannot compare it to other products. I have owned it for about a month and use it for my daily two and a half mile commute through the city to school.
It performs as I expected, bright light, solid construction and has a farily sturdy, but adapatable, mounting system.
When shopping for this I was not looking for a super bright headlight; just something that would help me see in the dark and would catch drivers attentions. I does help you see in the dark, but will only give you the sense that you have a decent flashlight lighting the way, not a headlight.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  This is a great light, November 14, 2007
By L. Frost
This light is VERY visible from way off. You can either use it blinking or constant. It is easy to install, and quite size adjustable for different size handlebars. It's easy to operate, and easily removed to slip into your pocket, when you park your bike and leave it somewhere. This is our 3rd light. (one for each bike). The batteries in the first one are still good after 5 months of almost daily use.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Completely incompatible with water, December 5, 2008
By greg alexander
I bought one of these from a bike shop. Indeed, the batteries last a very long time and it is "bright enough", but frankly I cannot understand the positive reviews here. Almost since I bought it, sometimes the light would not turn on (or would be very dim), and it would not respond to the push button. When this happened, the only way to turn it on or off would be to bang on it. Finally, I banged on it so hard that it broke, and upon seeing the insides, I understood the cause of the problem: it was full of water. I store this thing in my garage and I do not ride in the rain very often. Upon examining the design of the thing, it has many seams (without gaskets) in the top of the case, and none in the bottom, so it is only natural that it would take on water and stay wet long enough to mess up the circuit board, as has happened to me. The design is such that it is 100% inevitable that it will take on water in even a light rain.

So I am confused, do all of the other reviewers studiously avoid biking in the rain? If it starts raining while you are at work, do you sleep at work overnight instead of riding your bicycle home?

At any rate, if you don't live in the desert, I would avoid this and all other CatEye products like the plague. I have also owned CatEye Tomo and Strada computers, and they have also succombed to rain early on.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Better (brighter) than expected, June 9, 2010
By E. Cimino (Hagerstown, MD USA)
It took me a long time to decide on a bike headlight. Will it be bright enough? Will it be too big or too small? Will it mount securely?

Well, I'm glad I got this one. It's about as bright a three-LED light is going to be and it's very compact. It fits together very tightly, and the mount is very secure. There are rubber inserts for fitting different diameter bars and the thumb wheel design makes it very easy to get a nice tight fit.

Unclipping the light from the mount is no problem. You have to push up on a button on the underside of the unit and then slide it forward. Once you get it, it's very easy to do and sturdy enough.

My only possible complaint is that the unit is so tight, that it's actually difficult to open it up in order to change the batteries - But too tight is better than too loose!

Keep in mind that this is a "be seen" light and not really a full-fledged night driving light.

I find this product to be fairly elegant in both form and function. I've been very happy with my choice.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Worthy of 4 stars!, April 24, 2008
By J. Edmondson (Minnesota)
This is an excellent, LONG BATTERY life light. I have owned this for a few months and still haven't needed to swap the batteries. The flashing mode is working as I see cars that have let me by to pass. I feel safe with this light on lighted pathways.

Regarding unlit trails...I don't think this light can do the job on steady mode for complete comfort. If you are going slow its okay but if you want to cruise > 15 mph this may be dangerous cause you'll overdrive your headlight and not be able to swerve.

BTW, 4 stars instead of 5 due to the installation of the mount...it was bad. But its on, and thats THAT!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good light in a small package, January 30, 2008
By G. Lawrence
Pros:
small light
regular batteries (AA)
removable light
easy to install mount
flashing mode, good for being seen on the bike

Cons:
could be a little brighter in non-blinking mode. I think I was expecting just a bit more light from 3 LEDs, but it gets the job done.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Why you should buy two, June 19, 2009
By barnesfoto (Detroit, MI)
If you live in one of America's large cities, where Reagan-era cuts in mental health care sent hoards of people unable to care for themselves to live on our streets, you will be unable to leave this product on your unattended bicycle. Those who live on park benches, in cardboard boxes and under bridges will find your Cateye a great accessory to urban homelessness. Sooner or later, you will bike to your favorite hangout, and in a rush to see your friends inside, you will forget to remove and pocket your cateye, and when you return, your Cateye will be gone. Therefore, you will need to buy two. The good news is that it's a fine product. But please, write your lawmakers and demand a sane public policy regarding the dumping of the mentally ill on our nation's downtowns. Reopening of public mental health institutions would be a great start.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Works fine, June 25, 2008

No complaints so far, except that it's very easy to take off, so someone could steal it easily if I didn't take it off the bike when parked in a public place. May not be as bright as some people would like.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Cateye LED light, February 8, 2008
By jazz aficionado (Cleveland, OH)
This works well for what I needed--a flashing light to increase my visibility to traffic. It is light, easy to remove, and sleek. I would not suggest using it to light the road in front of you; it is not that powerful.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Worth the money, May 8, 2011
By Chuzzler
This headlight represents great value for money - the light beam is strong and the battery life is excellent.
The band that secures the light is easy to fit but when I tried to move the light to another bike the locking system failed.
It's essentially a disposable lamp - use it 'till it dies then buy another. Don't plan on switching it between bikes and you'll be fine.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Price, March 15, 2011
By S. Zilla
Free shipping from the vendor was a nice touch. Took a bit longer than I would have liked, but hey, its free!

I purchased this light to replace a Blackburn Quadrant that burned out on me after a year, and while this light doesn't have quite the same output as the quadrent, it works nicely for my needs.

This light is absolutely TINY! It won't add much weight to the bike at all, and puts out a nice beam. The only problem is it is a very narrow beam so you may not want this if it will be your sole source of illumination, but if you need to light up a dark bike path, 2 of them should suffice. If you're just trying to be seen in the city or light up a side street then this shouldn't give you any problems at all.

Just be sure you pay attention to how the lamp connects to the mounting device, as I can see how some of the other reviewers might have broken it. There is a small tab on the bottom of the light that you need to depress before it will slide off of the mount, and I can see it breaking if you force it. If you have a key or something handy that might make it easier.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good light at a good price, September 12, 2010
By Jake
Looks nice

I don't use it that often but the battery has yet to die on me.

Mounting system is easy to use and secure.

The clip to release the light from the mounting system seems a bit flimsy but hasn't broken on me.

Pretty bright, its a bit dim for riding on unlit trails at night but if being visible to cars is your main concern this will do the trick.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Flimsy construction, September 4, 2010
By Kyle
I was disappointed with this light. I used it for six months on a daily five mile round trip commute. The light beam, battery life and handlebar mount were all very good but the construction of the light itself is very flimsy. The top cover over the batteries does not seal tightly allowing water to seep in and it is easily lost. The clear front part containing the bulbs and circuit board eventually broke off just by normal handling. I could not reattach it since the very thin wires also broke away from their solder joints. The switch on the back of the light does not have a positive "click" and can be easily activated unintentionally.

This light is good for only occasional use in a dry environment. I bought a Planet Bike Beamer 3 for a couple dollars more and it seems like it is much better made and water resistant.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Destroyed by rain, August 9, 2010
By Sequoia Hughes (Santa Cruz, CA)
The price is nice, but this light didn't hold up as well as older Cateyes. My old Cateye could go through any weather, but this one shorted out after riding through rain. They don't make 'em like they used to...

3.0 out of 5 stars.  not great, June 5, 2010
By dana
Over-all this light isn't horrible, but i was still a bit disappointed with it. I guess i shouldn't have been given the price range, but somehow i expected more. But let's start at the beginning:

The mounting mechanism is irritating, flimsy, and too big. The strap seems very easily broken and the little spinny plastic locking thing is not as secure as it could be (although this might be a feature for some -- it is easy to get on and off). But more important than that, the strap is too big -- it BARELY gets tight enough to grab on to my handle bars. The thing is too easily movable, and if it were even a millimetre or two bigger in diameter it would be flopping around all over as i'm riding. The strap seems big enough to wrap around impossibly thick handle bars, but it will NOT work as well (if at all) with thinner ones.

As far as brightness, it's mediocre. I would say that it's bright enough for a car to see you from within running-over distance, assuming it's not foggy or anything, and it will illuminate signs and reflectors, but it is NOT really bright enough to see things in front of you (like pot holes and glass) very clearly. If you ride around on poorly maintained roads a lot at night, or if you ride in the rain/snow/fog, you'll want something much stronger.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice light, March 12, 2010
By Play the Dead (Williamstown, KY USA)
Nice little light, bright, and at a reasonable weight. The light either flashes or has a steady beam. The instructions aren't great, and it took a while to figure out that you have to hold the button in for about three seconds to turn the light off (if you press it quickly, it just switches between steady and flashing mode). The handlebar clamp attaches quickly and easily, and the light comes off if you know you won't need it for your ride. I also purchased the companion tail light. I highly recommend both products.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great, great product for its intended purpose., February 1, 2010
By Dave
Its main purpose is to make you seen at night. Its second purpose is to give you SOME light to see where you are going. This light is purfect for urban riding. I bought it for riding at night in Washington, DC. This gives me a little added light and makes me highly visable to traffic around me.

Unlike those small frog led lights and others like it, this light has enough power to help me see, not just be seen. In my opinion, the the single led lights (frog) are a waste of money. Buy this and make yourself much more visable and therefore safer.

At the same time, please note that if you want a light so you can go riding at night, you should updgrade to something of NiteRider (which is purpose built to see, not be seen) quality. I would also not recommend this product to someone offroading as there is not enough light to see every branch and rut in front of you.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  A "To Be Seen" light, not so much a "To See" light, November 12, 2009
By psteimel (Germantown, MD USA)
Bike lights generally fall in to two categories: "to see" or "to be seen". This light does illuminate a bit in front of you but not enough to go fast in the dark without worrying about hitting something. The light is surprisingly small (about the size of two fingers).

The switch is very well designed in that you hit it once and the light turns on solid, hit it again and the light blinks, hit it a third time and the light goes back to solid. This is nice if your ride takes you alternately through well lit high-traffic areas (blinking mode) and dark low-traffic areas. To turn the light off you hold the switch down for a couple of seconds. This way you never accidentally turn the light off when changing modes.

Light is not very water-proof. I left the light on when I washed my bike and the insides were soaked. Worked just fine after it dried.

Mount could be studier...but it is OK.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Wife loves it, September 20, 2009
By John K. Wollam (Chico, Ca.)
I bought this light for my wife, to replace a POS Bell xenon light.
I was shocked at how small it was, but it really throws the light out there!
the light can be steady on, and also will flash if you so desire.
installation is a snap with no tools required.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bright light, convenient to attach/detach., September 8, 2009
By K. Matokhin
I use it almost every day riding bicycle to/from downtown Chicago.
It still runs on original batteries and produces bright flashes - which I think necessary to be noticed by drivers and pedestrians (I use it any time, day or night).
Takes a second to attach/detach it to the handle.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good price for entry level LED light, February 28, 2009
By Ace (San Jose, CA)
The Cat Eye HL-EL135 is a good basic bicycle LED light for the price. The body and design of the light is cool, it looks great. The flashing function works well for riding at night and I use it the most. However, I found the steady function to be only marginally adequate for my needs, not bright enough for my taste. I will buy another Cat Eye Halogen light to go with it. Otherwise, I am happy with this light for most daily commutes.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Complete Garbage, November 22, 2011
By ajgabriele (Florida)
Bought one last night during a ride because my rechargeable was drained and I wanted at least to be seen.

Directs so much light upward, into the eyes (like looking right into an LED flashlight), that night vision is spoiled and does not throw nearly enough light forward to see anything useful about the road. The pivot on the bracket is a non-locked Philips screw that allows the light to rotate at the slightest bump. This lamp is so badly designed that I will avoid any Cateye products in the future because they obviously have no respect for their customers or regard for their safety.

It might be a temptation to put this on a child's bike because it is cheap but only if you want to get rid of the child.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Not What I Hoped For, September 29, 2011
By Chestoozo (Ashburn, VA)
This light works perfectly well under fading light conditions or at any time you want oncoming traffic to see you. The mistake I made was assuming that it projected sufficient light to enable me to see a reasonable distance ahead in total darkness. The LED light is certainly bright enough, particularly in flashing mode, for others to see you but does not extend much beyond two or three feet.

If you're looking for an affordable and functional bike light to be noticed, then this one fits the bill. If you want a light that lights up the night, go with something with at least 250 lumens or more.
