4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Product, August 11, 2010
By Triplet Dad (Atlanta, GA)
The Swagman Bar Adapter Deluxe and Sparehand Bike Frame Adapter are identical products. I couldn't find any specifications for the products, thought I would try one of each and was surprised to find that they were one in the same. Only the packaging was different. If you're not sure if this will work for you, the Sparehand would be much easier to repackage since the Swagman came in a tamper-proof hard plastic package with rivets to hold it together.

The products were sturdy, but the button and small uncoated metal components are not stainless steel and therefore prone to rusting if exposed to the elements. The products are easy to disassemble, however, so you could clean or oil the components if necessary.

If you think these adapters might be a little too long for your needs, it is clear that you could disassemble one and cut the two sliding bars down using a hack saw, pipe cutter, etc. without any difficulty.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works great, June 15, 2010
By Mike S
One thing I didn't see in other reviews or the Amazon write-up is the fact that the two ends can rotate relative to each other (unlike some other models) - this provides more flexibility and can help with some child bikes that are too small for this to fit in the normal way. For example, I rotate one end 90 degrees to connect to a handlebar cross brace on a child bike - I hauled this way (plus a second Swagman adapter on a lady's bike) on an over-2000 mile trip with zero problems.

It would be nice if the minimum/fully-retracted length was a bit shorter, but other than that, this is a good, quality item.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Still doesn't help much with kids bikes, August 14, 2008
By delawaremom (Camden, DE)
None of our kids' bikes would fit on the swagman bike rack we got as a gift so we had to get one of these. The problem is that the bar is too long to fit the way they tell you to attach it. In fact it barely would have worked on our adult bikes, if we had needed to use the adapter. My husband had to figure out a different way to put it on. It's not a simple way but it at least allows us to take the kids' bikes.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great product - Kids bikes too, February 25, 2012
By Scott Chytil
I just ordered three of these adapters after my neighbor showed them to me. The side opening latch is a much better design than the Yakima adapter that I currently have. The Yakima one opens Up only, which hits the seat. If you have it on a kids bike with a short seat post it is very difficult to get off.

For those others with kids bikes, here's how you make it work. Put the adapter on your rack before you put the bike on the adapter. Raise the bike up into the adapter and you won't have any issues. I can't guarantee this will work for all bike racks, but if you can get a bike with the adapter onto the first bike slot, but it won't go over to the second or third spots, this might help.

These adapters will work for kids 20" bikes, but 16" would be too small. Not sure about 18" either.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I should have ordered these years ago!, June 29, 2008
By shellynnv (Rochester, MI USA)
Great product. I should have ordered them much earlier. We have been lifting and loading 3 of 4 mountain bikes on the lower bar and upside down for years. This adapter makes it so much easier! I ordered 2 different ones and we like this one best because of the locking feature on each end. I will be ordering 1 more.

I got the product in 3 days (but I didn't pay shipping).
It is easy to use, you don't need any tool or anything.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Pleasant Surprise, August 28, 2011
By The Advocate
Best Feature: Ease of Use. So simple my 7 year old daughter can attach it to her bike without any trouble. Expands to multiple lengths and spins which makes it easy to attach on both small children's bikes and larger mountain or racing bikes.

There are many companies who make bar adapters. For someone who needs to load 5 bikes to a bike rack, you can't put a price on ease of use. The beauty of this model is that you don't have to pay a significant premium to get all the features you need to destress the bike loading process.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect for my wife's hybrid., August 7, 2011
By Digman (Delaware)
I'd been struggling with putting my dear wife's hybrid onto our bike carrier. This is the best investment I have made since purchasing her bike. It works extremely well and has made loading and unloading the bike much easier - almost a pleasure. My only concern is that the retaining strap of the bike carrier crosses directly over the release buttons of the adapter's hinged ends. I'm careful to place an unused hole of the restraining strap over the release button to prevent a premature release of the adapter.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Gets the job done, July 22, 2011
By Rob
I recently used the Swagman Bar Adapter to haul 3 ladies' bikes on a 5 hour trip. The bar goes on very easily, and does not damage the bike in any way. Also it did not interfere with the bike rack. I am very pleased with my purchase. Amazon had, by far, the best price available.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  works great, July 14, 2011
By Karen (Beautiful Southern California)
not a lot to say about this product. It works, and it works well. I have had the Yakima ones before, and they work, but not any better than this one does, and about double the price. I use it on my Klein "Y" frame mountain bike, as well as my daughters beach cruiser. It makes life easier when you have to load up a bike on the bike rack, and it actually fits. No more lifting the bike into outer space to get the frame on the rack someplace.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works Great, June 29, 2011
By Joseph Tighe
This worked great for my 19.5" Trek full suspension bike. I have a really fat fork mount and it still fit over it. The spring action on it isn't that strong but the hooks lock into place so there's no way this will fall off. The only point of failure I see is if the seat fell off, but that wouldn't be a failure of this device.

I've taking it out 3 times now on all types of terrain (highway at 80mpg, dirt roads, city streets with pot holes) and its held perfect!

The only thing to note is mine didn't have red ends, they were black. A minor difference but worth noting.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for Ladies Bikes, June 26, 2011
By Teacher Momma (Lansing, IL USA)
We use this adapter bar with my bike and the Swagman 4 bike towing bike rack. If you have a Ladies bike or any bike with a bent frame you will need this adapter. One note-this does not work with 16 inch bikes. I was hoping we could tow my son's bike, rather than put it in the van, but that isn't gonna be the case.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  The Best, April 27, 2011

This is by far the easiest to use. Just push button open up and close on seat and handle bars. It retracts to a perfect fit.

This bar adapter is very well designed and it does the job perfectly fitting bikes without a conventional frame bar .

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect Product!, August 26, 2011

Works excellent. Both ends open very easy. I have used a different one which was very difficult to open. Also, has a resistance spring in it so it collapses when not in use.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Works as advertised, November 26, 2011
By Golf Nut
Bought this as a cheaper alternative to the Yakima bar. Seems to work just fine. Not sure if having the bar open to the side instead of to the top (as the Yakima does) is an advantage or disadvantage yet. This bar does have a spring inside to keep the two halves of the bar together, whereas the Yakima does not. That's kind of nice.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Problem with fit, November 28, 2011
By Russell Estes (Valley Forge, PA)
I had to return this item as it did not fit my wife's bike very well and did not fit on my bike rack. Make sure the distance between the ends of the bar fit the spacing of the bike rack support bars.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Well built and simple to use, February 10, 2012
By Red 5 (Tahoe area USA)
The title of this review says it all. We use these on kids bikes and an adult mountain bike with an unconventional frame. Couldn't be happier. Well-designed, easy to use. No pinched fingers as with other competitive products, and the price is right. While you're at it, get two just in case your buddy shows up with a new funky-framed downhill bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best Adapter Available., March 13, 2012
By Revy
Durable. Thin, makes it easier to use on hitch mounted racks. Has the ability to rotate, this a must for kids bikes. Short enough for smaller bikes. Great deal overall.
