Great, 1/2" diameter cable, May 11, 2010
By Mark in Tempe (Tempe, AZ USA)

|
At 1/2" diameter, this cable is thicker than Kryptonite's 3/8 (10mm) x 7' cable. And, less expensive. Obviously, a little heavier to carry. But, perhaps a bit more of a deterrent.
I see people rate cables low because their bike was stolen. Everyone needs to realize that a cable is not adequate security except in low-theft areas. And even then: only for a quick trip inside a convenience store (to prevent the bike from being picked up and carried away). For everything else, you should use a U-lock. (Use that to lock the rear wheel through the chainstay/seatstay tubes to a bike rack). The cable is handy to loop through the front wheel, seat and rear rack. Most thieves won't go to the trouble of cutting a cable just for a seat or front wheel. (For more expensive front wheels, they probably have quick release axles and you're better off putting the front tire next to the rear tire and through the U Lock.).
Riding around, I'm amazed at how many bikes I see that are secured incorrectly. Bikes left at bus stops, locked with a cable. Or, U Locks through a front wheel. Those people increase my security because thieves will target those bikes because mine would be too much more difficult.
When you use the right tool for the right job, and use the tool correctly, it can be effective. The Avenir cable is very effective when used appropriately.
BTW: The only negative of this cable is that it doesn't come with a velcro strap to keep the cable wound up.

Slightly short dimensions but still thick cable, looks super stong, and should deter thieves, September 3, 2010

I just received this cable and am going to use it to lock my bikes in my pick up truck rack. The one i received looks different from the pictures as the loops are not as big but still enough to make a noose and pass one loop through the other. The one pictured here is definitely a thinner cable, the one i received looks much thicker. I was debating between a 7ft and 15ft to lock my stuff on the truck but this one seemed long enough to go through my two bikes and some wheels.
One disappointment is the specs on this. Measuring the diameter of the cable WITH the insulation comes to about 11.1mm; not sure how other companies measure but i would have thought 12mm cable and then insulation on top of that. The effective length is also short 6'8". i suppose cable does have 7 feet total cable length if you include the return sides of each loop. In other words if you broke the loop clamps you would get 7 feet of straight cable. Not really going to make much difference but if it says 7ft x 12mm on the packaging and site, i'd sure like to expect it is.

GREAT SUPPLEMENTAL CABLE, February 19, 2009
By A. CARLOS (Chicago, IL)

This is the thickest security cable you can buy, but PLEASE use in conjunction with a U-Lock. I only bought it so I can also secure the wife's bike. AGAIN, don't use just by itself unless you want to buy a new bike to replace your stolen one.

Looks strong, and that's the point, November 10, 2009

I got this cable to replace the dinky one that comes with all the laptop computer locks. I gotta believe thieves laugh at those and reach for the nearest scissors. I use it in conjunction with Belden's "security key" lock that fits in the Kensington slot and works with a padlock. This cable looks really substantial, in fact bigger than most other bike locks. Now they see this moosey cable and serious padlock and realize they're dealing with something else (at least until they see the cheap "security key" and reach for the nearest tweezers).

Nice Cable but I think the description is a bit deceptive, July 12, 2011
By srijr

I ordered this cable in addition to the 7mm I already own. I purchased this because it was a 12mm cable opposed to the 7mm. When I received the cable it appeared that the cable was thicker, but after inspecting the cable more closely it looks like the steel is about the same size. The rubber surround on the Avenir is definitely thicker. I don't think the rubber is going to really offer any more protection than the other cable that I own. Nice cable for the price.

Great Cable, May 24, 2011
By Amazon Addict

This cable is AWESOME> It is thick, and long which means it easily reaches around both tires. But most of all it is super soft and flexible. Making it easy to ride with wrapped around your shoulders or the handle bars with no issues. I love it.

long and strong, October 15, 2010

Long and strong, its not just my nickname... cheesy I know.
I used this on a recent bike trip with friends. I was able to use with my ulock and easily lock two bikes together and anchor to various things. It is not the lightest thing to carry around in a backpack while riding, but that is what makes it so robust and able to protect my biked. A++

I use this in tandem with a NY Fogettaboutit (sp)...This is just for locking the front wheels of our bikes to the frame. As a stand-alone bike lock? Hell no.

Thick, October 26, 2009

This might be the thickest most durable cable I've seen. The price is great. Just buy a decent lock to pair, not some cheesy padlock.

Like everyone else's saying, it's very thick., July 29, 2010

One word of caution, the loops to place the lock are no thinner than the rope it's self. You'll need a big lock.

Great product, but ignore recommended accessories, June 22, 2010
By MH (Bloomington, MN)

I bought the tightrope (7 ft), and given the recommended purchase add-ons, I also bought Master Lock 121T to use as a lock for it. This Master Lock (that amazon recommends) is too small for the tightrope, and you can't even get the lock around the cable. I ended up getting another keyed lock from our local big box store. Do not buy Master Lock 121T w/ this cable, the lock does not fit.
The tightrope itself is a solid cable however.

Too Thick, Don't Fit Padlock, June 30, 2011

It looks like a sturdy cable. Due to its additional thickness, it did not fit the padlock that I have. I had to return it. Check it before you buy it.

Thick, durable, cable, June 15, 2011
By C. Tran (California)

This cable is reasonably priced given how thick it is. I realize that a determined thief could bypass any cable (or lock for that matter), but when given the choice between this one coupled with a u-lock and your neighbor's bike, they'll probably move on.

Tough Stuff, May 17, 2011
By Potatoe

This cable is tough. It works great with a mini u lock. I feel safe leaving it out. I just wish it had a strap/mounting rack that goes with it. It's a bit of a hassle to roll it up, but otherwise a great buy.

Nice addition to a standard lock., April 28, 2011
By CT/RAD DUDE (PFLUGERVILLE,TEXAS)

This is a high quality cable, intended for "average" security needs. Keep in mind this is for theft-deterrance, not guaranteed crime prevention. With that said, the cable is thicker and better constructed than most others in this price range. I have mine coupled with a great U-Lock, and I try to attach both to a thick post when parking my bike. Although you may not be able to completely eliminate the potential for theft, this can be a great tool for slowing the would-be thieves down, or having them look elsewhere. Afterall, many bike riders don't even use a lock. GJM

Its a thick cable. Very reliable., January 12, 2011
By C. Joo Kee (Singapore)

This is the thickest cable lock that I can find currently. I use it together with my kryptonite Newyork U-lock to ensure robust security. While cable lock alone is not a good lock to prevent thief, I use it to secure my wheels and seat to the U-lock which secure the frame.
This is a combi that I trust which has not failed me thus far (For at least the last nine months). So if you're looking for a good cable lock, get this. But just mind that owing to the thickness, it may not be very efficient in transporting it. Its just a tradeoff between security and portability.

I recently bought myself a fixie bike and if you are familiar w/ fixie bikes you know that its all the rave right now meaning thieves will likely steal it. This absolutely made me not worry anymore, the thickness of the cable on this is absolutely hard to cut. GREAT BUY for me YAY!

Heavy Duty Rope, October 31, 2010
By KCTRI

This rope is a beast. I ordered it with my u-lock and I am glad I did. This rope on it's own looks impressive, couple it with a giant lock and most people will not even think about it. It is great. A bit large and heavy, but that is what you need to keep theives away.

Nice and thick, September 6, 2010
By didirider

This is a nice thick cable that I use with an OnGuard Brute STD 5001 Bike U-Lock. No point in getting a thick cable like this and whacking a padlock at the end!
There's only a couple of things you have to put up with because of the thickness:
- hard to wind up into a compact size
- weight
Those two trade offs are worth it for the extra piece of mind.

While not thick as I thought it would be this cable is heavy and should be a deterrent for those who think my trike should be their trike. It's easy to use, just wished it was a little longer.

Good quality, great price. Glad I bought the 7ft version, it's just long enough to be useful.
Using in combination with my Evolution series 4 U-Lock. It's just the right size for my iZip Zuma.

Thick cable, good length for a couple bikes, September 2, 2011
By Cyooties

This is a nice cable. The soft coating means it wont scratch your stuff. It's long enough to lock up 2-3 bikes at once. The only issue is that it is very thick, so you need a lock that can handle that.

Nice, August 31, 2011
By Kristin (TN)

I got 2 of these to wrap around my bikes on the bike racks to make it a little harder for a thief.. hoping to deter them as well. I looked into some others at the store so i knew i wanted something around 6-7 ft and over 10mm. The picture shows a really thin one. This one I received is definitely not thin..i attached a picture of it. Like another reviewer mentioned, this cable is actually 80 inches, not 7 foot. But it is close enough for me.
