Product Description:

Asleep at the Wheel has been reviving western swing music for almost forty years and Willie Nelson has been playing, well, just about every type of music (except maybe rap) for well over forty. The two acts come together on February 3 to salute the western swing sound on Willie and the Wheel .

Ray Benson told the 9513 - Willie s our lead singer, and we do all the Western swing stuff and I mean the old stuff. Milton Brown, Cliff Bruner, Spade Cooley, Bob Wills. It s got Willie, the Wheel, and some horns. It s gonna be pretty cool.-

In a separate interview with Live Daily, Benson explained the origins of the album - Jerry Wexler originally came up with this concept back when Willie was on the Atlantic label but before the record could be made, Willie left Atlantic for CBS Records and so the idea was shelved.-

Jump ahead to 2007 when the Wheel went out on the Last of the Breed tour with Nelson, Ray Price and Merle Haggard. Wexler went to one of the shows and started pushing to do the album again.

- Jerry wanted us to do this album and I'm glad we got to do it for him, and that he heard it before he passed on,- Nelson said in a statement.

Benson says they are also planning a tour together starting February 11 in Red Bank, New Jersey. - Willie and I are cooking up quite a concert. Not only will we be playing songs from the new album, we'll also perform Willie's classics together with Asleep at the Wheel and a full horn section. There will be a few surprises too!-

5.0 out of 5 stars.  This one HAD to happen!, February 5, 2009
By Real Country Fan (Austin)
Good things come to those who wait. This album has been decades in the making, and if you're a fan of western swing, Willie, and/or Asleep At The Wheel, you're gonna love this one. Western swing is just one of the genres Willie Nelson's explored over the years, and he's darned good at it. Asleep At The Wheel has remained true to their western swing roots since the early seventies...both Willie and the Wheel are legends in and out of Austin. Willie sounds like he's channeling Tommy Duncan on the Bob Wills standards "Bring It On Down To My House", "Right Or Wrong", and "Corrine Corrine". I also especially like "Oh, You Pretty Woman", "I Ain't Gonna Give Nobody None 'O This Jelly Roll", and "Won't You Ride In My Little Red Wagon". On the whole, the whole album brings back some very fond memories for me of some well-spent nights listening to the likes of Bob Wills, Ernest Tubb, Hank Thompson, and other western swingers. If this is roots music, it's obvious that Willie and the Wheel didn't get far from the roots of their raisin'!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bring It On Down, Wille and The Wheel, February 10, 2009
By pris, (New England USA)
Willie Nelson has once again found his forte. Willie has combined with the best Western swing band, Asleep At The Wheel, for a joyous romp through 12 tracks of classic American swing. You will find yourself smiling', stompin' your feet, clappin' your hands and singing along with the group.

Willie and his friends sound like they are having such a good time that we can't help but enjoy ourselves. This is one of the best CD's of the year. It is said that Jerry Wexler the rock n roll impresario tried to bring Willie and the Wheel together many years ago and finally realized his dream just before Wexler's death last year.

Willie and the Wheel start out with 'Hesitation Blies' and right away we know this is sumthin' great. The fiddling is the best there is, along with Willie's voice.

'Right or Wrong' Willie sings along with Ray Benson of the Wheel- this is the old time western dance hall songs from the 1940's.

'You gotta 'Fan It', cool it, fan it till the cows come home'- how often do hear this kind of lyrics that give you the picture of life down home.

'Bring It On Down To My House' is one of those tunes that lighten our steps and brings joy to the old bones.

'Corrine, Corrina' the old time song we all know is one of the better renditions around.

'Im Sitting On Top Of The World' sung with the Wheel's Elizabeth McQueen is a honky tonk send up that could be my favorite.

Vince Gill and Paul Schaffer introduce 'South' but it is Eddie Rivers that brings the song on home.

'Won't You Ride In My Little Red Wagon' brings us the sense of joy and fun to be had on this CD- a mix of jazz, blues and swing, it has it all.

Asleep At The Wheel has helped Willie connect with his inner Bob Wills, and the best of Willie's sounds. The fiddles, piano, and steel guitar bring this CD to life. Willie has never sounded better, and the Wheel has added the vibrance that brings this CD the feisty, swing sounds. Can't you see the couples whirling around the dance floor? Willie and the Wheel have brought us all down to the heart of Americana. My best friend found this CD-he was correct as always, this CD rocks!

Highly Recommended. prisrob 02-10-09

5.0 out of 5 stars.  One of the Best Country Recordings in Years, February 8, 2009
By Art and Music
This is one of the best country recordings in years. Congratulations to everyone who worked on the recording for doing an outstanding job.

Asleep at the Wheel are masters of the Western Swing repertoire, but they can also play standard Big-Band songs, rockabilly, honky-tonk country, blues, hot fiddle tunes, and more. And of course Willie Nelson is similarly versatile. This is a great matchup of talent.

There is a lot of energy here with expressive, joyful singing, dynamite arrangements, great songs, and red-hot musicianship throughout.

When I studied guitar with Eldon Shamblin many years ago, he told me that it is not possible to play Western Swing without knowing music theory. I think that's true, because of the arranging factor. Western Swing music features a good mix of arranging and improvising.

Most of the songs here are classics-and are good evidence that contemporary music often sounds thin and forced compared to the great songs of yesteryear.

If you like Bob Wills, Milton Brown, Hank Penny, Adolph Hofner, and similar musicians, you'll love this recording. And if you like good music but are new to Western Swing, please give this CD a try. There aren't many musicians who can play hillbilly jazz, and it is a real treat to hear it played right. Great stuff and every song is a gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Willie and the Wheel--spirited, joyous AND A FULL FIVE STARS !!!, February 5, 2009
By Matthew G. Sherwin (last seen screaming at Amazon customer service)
Willie And The Wheel is a great new CD release from ten time Grammy Award winning Willie Nelson and Asleep At The Wheel. Asleep At The Wheel has won nine (count `em, nine) of their own Grammy Awards; and they all deserved every last trophy. The quality of the sound is excellent and that artwork is awesome! This is terrific music with catchy melodies and lyrics that are well written and performed. It's a BUY!

The CD begins with a wonderful tune called "Hesitation Blues." "Hesitation Blues" sounds terrific and I've never heard Willie Nelson singing better. Asleep At The Wheel also makes good and the music that goes with the vocals fits in perfectly for this opening tune. There's a great piano arrangement on "Hesitation Blues," too. "Sweet Jennie Lee" is a cute little number that has lots of pep and they deliver this with much enthusiasm. "Sweet Jennie Lee" has that country swing flavor to it that is infectiously catchy and "Sweet Jennie Lee" is a number I won't regret hearing over and over again! There's also "I Ain't Gonna Give Nobody None...;" this is a fun tune and they perform this with panache! "I Ain't Gonna Give Nobody None..." has some great guitar which works so well for this ballad. Willie Nelson and Asleep At The Wheel complement each other's vocals to perfection--and beyond!

"Oh! You Pretty Woman" has a fast tempo but these pros never miss a beat--they handle the complicated tempo and key changes without a flaw. "Oh! You Pretty Woman" puts these artists squarely front and center--right where they belong. "Oh! You Pretty Woman" is easily a major highlight of this CD.

"Right or Wrong" even highlights Ray Benson from Asleep At The Wheel; and what a number this is! Country swing never sounded so good. You can tell these guys really know what they're doing; and I really like "Corrine Corrina." I believe I've heard "Corrine Corrina" before but I just can't place where I heard it--but it's no matter, they put their stamp on this ballad with their excellent diction and their wonderful sense of timing. "I'm Sittin' on Top of the World" features Willie singing with the magnificent Elizabeth McQueen of Asleep At The Wheel; Elizabeth has a voice as clear as a bell and that's grand. I also like the guitar arrangement for "I'm Sitting On Top Of The World."

"South" also features Vince Gill and Paul Shaffer for a rousing melody; and the album ends very well with Willie Nelson and Asleep At The Wheel performing "Won't You Ride in My Little Red Wagon." "Won't You Ride in My Little Red Wagon" swings with a country flavor that makes it quite pretty and I love it!

Overall, Willie Nelson joins forces with other artists on this CD including Asleep At The Wheel to make this one of their best releases yet. It's exciting that Willie and Asleep At The Wheel all sound so strong despite the passage of time; and I sincerely believe that they will be around for a long time to come, sharing their talents with us!

Thank you for these incredible songs, everyone!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  A Little disappointed, February 3, 2009
By R. Christ (Nebraska)
Exceptional from the standpoint of sound and artistry. Nothing less than what one would expect from Willie. My disappointment comes from the remakes. Too great a talent spent on songs that have been done too many times. Still worth the money with some awesome instrumentals.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Wille, the car just stays on the road..., March 20, 2009
By Joetimeclock (Tampa, Florida)
I love Willie Nelson and all that he stands for, but this album is not Vintage Willie. Then again, it makes no such promises. It's a good listen once, maybe twice, then it will be buried in with the old albums that I may, someday, replay. but not too soon. The musicians are all pro's, it's just not as good as listening to Asleep At the Wheel, and it's not as good as listening to a 1980's Willie Nelson album. The sum of the total is less than the two individuals.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A lifetime in the making, February 8, 2009
By Robert Busko (North Carolina)
Willie and the Wheel is the type of music country fans used to listen to. I can hear Bob Wills and Ernest Tubb's influence throughout the CD.
Willie is at his best on every track.

Particular favorites for me are "I Ain't Gonna Give Nobody None O' This Jellyroll", Oh! You Pretty Woman", "Corrine Corrina", and "Won't You Ride in My Little Red Wagon", though to be honest, there's not a bad track on the CD.

I'm fairly new to Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel but I'm rapidly becoming a huge fan. I'm hoping the tour comes anywhere near Asheville, NC. I'll be there.

If you're a country swing fan, then Willie and the Wheel is music you'll treasure.

I fully recommend.

By Jim McCall (Idaho, U.S.A.)
I've seen both of these...Nelson, when he had Shiny Auburn Hair and tailored Western Suits! Handsome to a fault! This, in Bakersfield! Benson and Company in Grants Pass, Oregon...where the audience danced in the aisles! Keep that Texas Swing Alive, Folks! How much do either of these cost? 5.0 out of 5 stars.  Magic, April 26, 2009
By James Morris (Jackson Heights, NY United States)
Asleep at the Wheel has long been the most successful in a large number of bands concerned with keeping Western Swing music alive and fresh. Willie Nelson's connection to Western Swing is a little more elusive, and many people would be surprised to learn that his second Liberty album, "Here's Willie Nelson" (1963) was produced by Tommy Allsup, a veteran of the late Bob Wills Texas Playboys. That album not only contained covers of two Bob Wills classics, Right or Wrong and Roly Poly, it also boasted liner notes by Bob Wills himself. Thus the idea of pairing Nelson with the Asleep at the Wheel sound is one that is long overdue. Better late than never, as they say, and I dare posture that these wonderful tracks come closer to emulating the sound of early classic Western Swing than anything that either Willie Nelson or Ray Benson and his band have yet managed on their own. From the opening of the first track, right up to the end, Willie and the Wheel capture the magic sound that has kept fans of this music swinging for over 75 years.

In particular, Won't You Ride in My Little Red Wagon, which Willie Nelson recorded years ago on his Over the Rainbow album (which in turn was a follow-up to his mega-selling Stardust record) is a Western Swing jam-session that, like the name Western Swing implies, blurs the lines between country and Jazz. This track may easily confuse the uninitiated listener to the point where they will be scratching their heads trying to classify it, even as they try to keep their toes from tapping. The blend of jazz and country western (emphasis on western) is an aspect of this particular brand of music that has satisfied my craving for good music for a very long time.

These 12 tracks represent the dream and brainchild of the legendary producer Jerry Wexler, who wanted to record an album of Willie Nelson doing classic Western Swing for Atlantic records, but Willie left the label for Columbia before the idea came to fruition. In the past (I don't want to admit how many years) I have acquired a lot of records of both Willie and, later, Asleep at the Wheel, but I suspect this one will stay on the top of my play list for both artists for a long time to come. Pure magic - scoop it up!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Willie & The Wheel - Buy It Now! YeeeeeHawwwwww, February 20, 2009
By Adam Dean's Closet
Bringing Willie Nelson and Western Swing revivalists Asleep at the Wheel together for an album of Western Swing classics was a dream project for legendary producer Jerry Wexler, who had wanted to do it back in the 1970s, when Willie was still with Atlantic.

Better late than never, Nelson and the band finally teamed up for WILLIE AND THE WHEEL. The Wheel had recently backed Willie up on tour, so they knew just how to make their sound work for the singer, and sure enough, Nelson's vocals fit the band's tight-but-swinging sound like the proverbial glove. Tackling tunes made famous by Bob Wills and others, they keep it traditional, staying within the stylistic template established some six decades earlier, but still stamping the project with plenty of their own distinctive personalities.

I was fortunate to see this tour last week and let me tell you, it was a foot stompin', dancin' in the aisles kind of night! Ray Benson and his "large band" (the line-up augmented by the addition of a two-piece horn section and the incredible 14-year-old Ruby Jane Smith on second fiddle) played their own style of Western Swing and then Willie joined in for over 90 minutes of what can only be termed "Willie Style" down-home music. It was really a treat to see these musicians.

If you are a fan of Western Swing - GET THIS CD!! An early contender for Album Of The Year (yes, it's that good)!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Sleepwalkin The Album Over You...., September 6, 2009
By callzemasiseezem (NH)
I'm a big fan of Willie, even more so for The Wheel, but this album just left me cold. Willie seems to be sleepwalking over his vocals, almost to the point where he seems bored! I KNOW the man's pushing 80, but his vocals, although still strong, seemed somewhat forced. Asleep At The Wheel, just seem along for the ride, functioning mainly as Willie's backup band! Their instrumentals are tight, and superb as ever, but can't we just have maybe 1 or 2 songs with The Wheel cooking on it's own? ....without Willie?? Where's the band jammin' on it's own?? How about a number with Ray Benson's superb vocal...without Willie?? Maybe a 2 CD set would've made this the event what it was meant to be- Willie by himself, the Wheel by themselves, a cookin instrumental or two, and THEN, together, Willie & The Wheel! Good album, certainly NOT a disappointment, but it left me shaking my head! Could've been a better album, by far!!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Willie and the Wheel, April 23, 2011
By Ole Hoss
Ol' Willie sounds the same as he did when I first heard him more than forty years ago. That's saying something because there are quite a few voices out there that have not stood up to the years. It don't matter who's in Austin, Bob Wills is Still the King, but Ray Benson sure gotta be the Crown Prince, Archduke, or vice King, or something. Asleep At the Wheel deserves to be credited as one of the all time great Big Bands. We're lucky to have Big Ray around to make good music in a world where it is increasingly hard to find. This recording really works and Willy fits right in without over dominating as he sometimes does.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  definitely worth having, but ....., September 11, 2010
By Jones fan (So. Vermont USA)
Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel only keep getting better and better and somehow they have captured a very subtle essence of western swing that to me seems totally authentic -- the timing, the swing, the looseness, the fun in the music is all right there. Willie Nelson of course has this same sense of timing and looseness right down to the marrow of his bones, and he is a country icon, but if you listen closely you can really hear the manner in which he has to force his voice at times these days, it's audible and detectable for sure, OK, not really bad yet, I suppose, for a guy approaching his late-70's, but it's clearly there none the less. Willie's vocal is less than adequate especially on "Bring it on Down to My House" where he mines the same vocal riff over and over, ignores the melody (you would like to hear it just once), making you think Willie has either forgotten or never knew the actual melody to the song. Also ... Ray needs to get Ruby Jane Smith on an AATW recording, and soon! Jason Roberts is an outstanding fiddler (and vocalist), but I'd rather hear Jason and Ruby Jane for twin fiddles than Jason over-dubbing himself, which is what you have on this CD. For a small sample of how good this ensemble can be (live) go to youtube and watch, especially listen, to them doing "Oh You Pretty Woman" on Austin City Limits. The fiddling especially is outrageously good.

Saw Asleep at the Wheel for the first time at Austin City Limit Music Festival 2009. Wish I had heard of these guys years ago! I am not a huge 'country music' fan, but these guys are fun to watch and listen to - classic country swing with a hip and happenin' vibe. Great musicians all around and the addition of Wille to the Wheel makes for a even better listen. You won't be disappointed.

Asleep at the Wheel and Willie aren't pushing to create an effect - this is relaxed country swing. Pros making what they do look easy. If you are looking for a high-concept, over-produced set, this isn't it. This album is as relaxed as sitting on the porch with a frosty glass.

Track 3 gives you a perfect sample of the attitude of the entire CD. If you like that one, you're going to like all of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Texas sized swing, April 2, 2009
By R. Kyle (USA)
If you ever are lucky enough to go to Austin, TX, you're going to hear a lot of two acts: Willie Nelson and Ray Benson/Asleep at the Wheel. Since a lot of the Austin people do a lot of cross-pollinating, the two acts getting together was pretty much a done deal. They just had to wait until Willie was with a label that'd approve.

This is all old tried and true songs, "Won't you ride in my little red wagon," "Corrinna, Corrinna", "South." They've got Willie and as an added bonus, a horn section.

It's impossible to listen to this CD without tapping your feet and finding the smile you've been looking for. Well done effort.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Texas Swing Meets Rockola, April 1, 2009
By Robert L. Norton (Long Island, New York)
This CD is one that will either set your feet dancing to the music immediately as well as bring a smile to your face at the wry humor within, or leave you thinking that your in Texas listening to a hip Bob Wills album.
Asleep at the Wheel is a tight band, the music is fresh, and Willie Nelson is in great jazzy vocal form, both with voice and guitar.
However, after sharing this CD with other people who decidedly are NOT fans of Willie, country music or Texas swing, and having them listen to it a second or third time, this CD's enthusiasm and verve grew on them. They came away happy, amused and liking the music on this CD.
Give it a try; it's worth the price of admission.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  (4.5 stars) WILLIE AND THE WHEEL... DEFINITELY DELIGHTFUL !, March 19, 2009
By ol' nuff n' den sum (the Virginia coast, USA)
Willie and the Wheel (2009) brings Willie Nelson together with Western swing veterans Asleep At The Wheel, and the pairing is as natural as a bowl of hot Texas-style chile and an ice-cold Lone Star beer. Good stuff!

Originally the brainchild of legendary Atlantic Records producer Jerry Wexler back in the 1970s, the project was put on hold until 2007 and finally completed just after Wexler died on September 18, 2008. Jerry Wexler is listed as the album's executive producer.

Simplified, Western swing is Dixieland jazz played by singing cowboys with fiddles, horns and pedal-steel guitars. Of course, it's a little more complex than that, but for the purpose of this review that's a pretty good description of the comfortable music that you'll find on Willie and the Wheel.

Willie Nelson sings the lead vocal along with AATW's Ray Benson and Elizabeth McQueen, who at times trade vocal phrases with him. Most of the songs here are Western swing standards made famous years ago by legends such as Bob Wills And The Texas Playboys. Willie and Elizabeth duet on the bluesy I'm Sitting On Top Of The World, an album highlight and probably my favorite here.

But now she's gone, I don't worry
I'm sitting on top of the world

There doesn't seem to be a lot of worry anywhere on this album; but while the atmosphere is relaxed and sunny, the production is mindfully professional. Asleep At The Wheel know their way around when it comes to Western swing, and Willie sounds like he's right at home, too. Vince Gill and Late Night's Paul Schaffer join AATW for the album's instrumental, South.

Willie and the Wheel is an easy-going, tuneful and modern journey back to the classic days of Western swing with Willie Nelson leading the way. And as usual with Willie, it's an enjoyable ride.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Fall in love with Western Swing for the first time......or all over again!!, March 3, 2009
By The real world is so much more.. (Cranston, RI USA)
In 1982, CBS records released a series of five 2 LP sets featuring the music of the legendary Okeh records. Okeh began life as an independent record label in 1918 and became a subsidiary of Columbia records in the late 1920's. Each one of the five releases in this series featured a different genre of music including Blues, Country, Soul, Rhythm & Blues and Western Swing. I purchased three of these sets and was most impressed by the album devoted to "Western Swing". I had never heard of this genre before but I was duly impressed. It was unlike any music I had ever heard before. Western swing can be best described as the fusion of sounds including cowboy, folk, Dixieland jazz and even polka. I found the music to be upbeat and incredibly entertaining. What I heard way back then made me long to hear more. Over the years I purchased a number of albums by such Western Swing artists as the legendary Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys, Hank Thompson and Tex Williams. Recently, I became aware of a brand new western swing album entitled "Willie & The
Wheel" featuring Willie Nelson and Asleep At The Wheel. I ordered it immediately.
"Willie and the Wheel" was conceived over 30 years ago by the fabled Atlantic records producer Jerry Wexler. According to the liner notes "Wexler got the idea to record Willie Nelson doing classic Western Swing songs on an album. Willie had been on Jerry's label, Atlantic, and it was not a hard stretch to see why Jerry wanted to do this. Although Jerry was known as "Mr.R & B" he was a closet fan of the great Western Swing bands. But before the record could be made WIllie left Atlantic for CBS records and so the idea was put to rest.".
In 2003, 86 year old Jerry Wexler resurrected the idea for this project. It would become a labor of love for everyone involved. Jerry enlisted Asleep At The Wheel to backup Willie Nelson. This was a marriage made in heaven. "Willie and The Wheel" features a dozen tunes hand picked by Jerry Wexler more than 30 years ago. The man obviously knew what he was doing. The result is an album that can be relished by life-long Western Swing afficianados and enjoyed by those sampling the genre for the very first time. You'll hear traditional favorites like "Hesitation Blues", "Corrine, Corrina" and "Oh, You Pretty Woman". My personal favorite was a tune penned by Western Swing legend Spade Cooley called "Shame On You". I also thoroughly enjoyed "Sweet Jennie Lee" and a terrific number entitled "I Ain't Gonna Give Nobody None O' This Jellyroll". The fact of the matter is that there is not a bad track on the entire album. Perhaps the most intriguing tune on "Willie and The Wheel" is the album's only instrumental "South". "Late Night With David Lettermen" bandleader joins in on the fun as does country music fave Vince Gill.
What really adds to the enjoyment of "Willie & The Wheel" is the fact that the lead vocals are shared by Willie Nelson and Asleep At The Wheel's Ray Benson and Elizabeth McQueen. And as you might expect the musicianship on this disc is absolutely incredible. At Jerry Wexler's insistence horns were added to a number of these tracks and the results are nothing short of spectacular. If you have never heard Western Swing before I suggest that you do yourself a favor and grab a copy of this disc. In their promotion for this album the record company is referring to "Willie & The Wheel" as an "instant classic". In my view that is a pretty fair assessment. Highly recommended listening for all!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Willie and The Wheel Keeps Me Dancing in My Cubical, February 3, 2009
By Living The Dream (Austin, TX)
What a fun record! Willie's voice is perfectly fitting for The Wheel's master musicianship on these cover songs which were big hits back in their day. The three-part harmonies are so fun to listen to and the horns on the album are a blast! This is Willie's best work in years and The Wheel has yet another Western Swing gem in their discography. The version of "I'm Sittin' On Top of The World" is probably the best version I have ever heard. You can tell Willie and Ray Benson did their homework on this one. Not to mention Jerry Wexler (Aretha Franklin) produced the album! He's a legend. I can't wait to go see Willie and The Wheel live! Everybody's going to be dancing in the aisles!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Willie Mixed, February 28, 2009
By Leadville Lover (The Endless Mountains of PA)
I like Willie Nelson and I like Asleep at the Wheel. When the two got together I expected Texas Swing. Some of the songs are that, but others sound more like Ragtime. The oldies Right or Wrong, Shame on You, and Little Red Wagon made the tape worthwhile, though.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Willie needs more help from the Wheel, March 22, 2009
By S. Lindsey (Pacific Northwest)
The strong voice of Ray Benson could have been used more on this CD. The band was nothing more than back up for Willie. Somewhat disappointed in this CD, the songs are really old, I didn't recognize them. My folks may have enjoyed this more than me, but she's 80 and he's gone.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  willie and the wheel is a good listen, October 26, 2009
By Howard R. Gentry
Willie and the wheel is a good listen..Asleep At The Wheel is a natural backup for the vocal phrasing and guitar licks that Willie is known for..There is a seamless quality to the pedal steel and Willies vocal work..Early on in the listen it becomes obivious that Willie can work with this group as if he had been with them from the beginning. It made me smile.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Go Willie!, September 11, 2009
By Phyllis K. Fleming
This is one of the most fun CD's I have listened to in a long time - I was not at all familiar with most of the songs but putting Willie Nelson together with the Asleep at the Wheel group was genius. It makes you smile and want to stop and dance.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  The Wheel Kieeps Rolling, May 23, 2009
By Monroe Cameron (Big Sky, Montana)
My wife heard this for the first time and ordered more western swing. Willie does a wonderful job with Asleep at the Wheel behind him. If you buy this and like it, go find some Bob Wills and see where it started or try some Hank Thompson and see where it went.

Good listening.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Now, for something completely different., April 20, 2009
By Chris (Maryland, USA)
Willie Nelson never ceases re-inventing himself. This CD is really County and Western, not folk, not bluegrass. If you buy it without thinking that Willie Nelson needs to be a certain style, you will love it. The group that backs him up is excellent, even though usually, I am not a C&W fan. Great CD, I love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A match made in heaven! One for the ages!, March 23, 2009
By Doctor of Rock (Brooksville FL)
As a western swing fan, this is one release that aroused my interest. My buddy brought it over this weekend and it just floored me so I ran out and bought it. Willie is in excellent "old leather" voice form and Asleep At The Wheel is slicker than ever in this salute to western swing classics. Some of these songs date as far back as 1929's "Hesitation Blues", Milton Brown's Sweet Jennie Lee from 1932 along with Brown's Oh, You Pretty Woman (1934), Shame On You, originally from Spade Cooley (1944), I'm Sitting On Top Of the World, originally done by the Mississippi Sheiks (1930) and later by Bob Wills and many other classic gems. These 12 cuts should be put in a time capsule to show what real top quality western swing sounded like, so 100 years from now someone will listen and say.."Man..that stuff was really good!" This is one disc for the ages. It's a match made in heaven..but its here now! Should be a Grammy winner..if life was fair.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A Match Made in Western Swing Heaven, March 12, 2009
By LA Reader (Los Angeles, CA USA)
Any new release by Asleep At the Wheel is a cause for celebration. After a solo CD by Ray Benson, it's great to hear the old band back together. Their newest teams them with Willie Nelson, who seems to be drinking from the same fountain of youth as Clint Eastwood. While I can't say Willie & the Wheel breaks any new ground, it's a pleasure to listen to again and again. This CD's takes on "Little Red Wagon" and "Come On Over to My House" are the best of a strong set. Worth getting for fans of either Willie or the Wheel.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Willie goes on and on, March 7, 2009
By jocko-from-durango (Alexandria, VA USA)
Linking Willie Nelson with the great group, Asleep at the Wheel, was a genius stroke. They release their inner Bob Wills and provide a CD that is tops from beginning to end. My favorite: Sitting on top of the world with a duet between Willie and Elizabeth, the Wheel's talented female vocalist.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Willie And The Wheel, March 4, 2009
By Rick V. Beckner (REDMOND,OR)
This is over the top good,if you are a lover of country type swing.
Very well produced and the Band is in top form.
In some ways . . this is what I have been wanting . . . and it delivers the mood people seek.
My big thing now is AMERICANNA.Levon Helm does it best on DIRT FARMER.The re-release of Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Ponies(Evergreen) has stole my heart and is the premire americanna cd on the planet,by far.
The new Jefferson Starship TREE OF LIBERTY has some excellent americanna music on it.Alot of the big country stars usually have some type of americanna song .Reba,George,Trace all have "it" but ol Willie has been there all this time.Hope we get a couple more from him before he retires.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Quintessential Western Swing, December 9, 2009
By L. Smith (Topeka, KS)
This album is absolutely the best western swing album in a very long time. The combination of Willie Nelson and Asleep at the Wheel is an incredible combination.

The musicianship of Asleep at the Wheel is, without a doubt, some of the best in the world. What a talented group of people Ray Benson has assembled.

I have yet to tire of listening to this great bit of Americana.
