Awesome Product, October 24, 2009
By Jimmybeth (Michigan)

|
Great product, would buy again. Easy to function hard to pick this lock. I usually can open these kind of locks but this one gives you false positives and the lock does not open unless you have the combination. It is great protection and strong. (UPDATE) I have now had it for about a year. The kids lock their bikes up at school and there bike was not stolen but the bike without a lock was. It is a good lock for the money. If you want solid steel this is not the product for you. It is designed to be light and easy to use. It is a solid Medium security lock.

My bike was stolen the first time I used this lock!, April 21, 2010
By Adina
|
|
Don't believe the earlier reviews that say its a strong bike lock and not easy to pick. My bike was locked up in front of a subway station in Manhattan. Hundreds of people passed it every minute. Whoever stole my bike surely had a very easy time breaking into this lock because otherwise they would have arouse the suspicion of the people walking by.
I called mongoose to take this junk off the market and they were completely indifferent.

Great product, considering the price of course!, May 9, 2010
By Ibn Ar-Rashid (New York)

The lock is great, considering the price. At less than $10.00 (when I bought it), it was a bargain. Of course, it's not the best lock in the world, but you will probably have to pay a much higher relative price for anything better. It's a lock and it works, that's what matters.
In the end locks can be broken, no matter how good it is, someday someone will come around and be able to breat it somehow. I wasn't about to spend any more on locks for this reason. As long as I can reduce the ease of my bike being stolen by a small margin I am fine with it.
This one is only 5' long and that's one of the reasons I like it as that makes it easier to carry when you aren't using it to lock your bike. It's also easy to use to set your combination and reset it if you need to. It's only for show though, I live in Brooklyn, out here people will steal your car while you go to the store for 2 minutes; a bike lock, no matter how expensive, is an easy job for thieves here.

You Definitely Get What You Pay For..., August 12, 2010
By Evil Genius (Kansas City, MO)

I admit that I purchased this bike lock because it was so cheap. And in this case, you definitely get what you pay for. Before I even used it the first time, I already had an issue during the set up. For some reason, after I set my 4-digit pin, the first digit became disengaged and now just spins freely. What I mean is that no matter what number you have the first digit on, as long as the last three are right, then the lock will open. So I guess I have a 3-digit lock now lol. Other than that however, the construction of the lock seems to be pretty solid. The cable is not very thick but is still very strong. This lock will definitely not stop any thief motivated enough to steal your bike but it is a pretty good theft-deterrent (which is all I need for my bike rides to the gym) plus is small and light so I can just leave it attached to my bike at all times and its not in the way while I'm actually riding it. (Pretty) Good and Cheap!

wasted my money on this one, October 14, 2010
By Lindsay
|
|
I bought this lock last week to lock up my bike.
Got it in the mail, set the new combination to match my PIN and every other 4 number code I have ever set up... made sure it worked with the new combination and went ahead and threw it in my backpack.
Headed home (where my bike was) and when I went to unlock the lock and lock up my bike the stupid thing wouldn't open.
I have tried everything I can possibly think of and I have not been successful at getting it open. I thought maybe I imagined the arrows were in a different spot, maybe I had one number off, maybe I had two numbers off (trying both above and below on these last two options)... no luck.
Going to throw it away and get a key lock like I have in the past. Thought the combination would save me the hassle of carrying my keys around, but really it just helped me throw 10 bucks down the drain.

Code changes randomly, August 29, 2010
By T. Gavankar
|
|
It's easy to set the code and it looks hefty enough to protect my bike (since these locks are more a deterrent than actual thief-stoppers anyway), but it had one major issue where the code randomly changed. I had set the code to what I wanted and then the next time I tried to open it it wouldn't open - turns out the code had changed where the first tumbler was one digit lower than what I had set it to. I'm not sure if this was due to faulty manufacturing or if I accidentally changed it when unlocking/locking it (which i highly doubt), but either way - that was problematic for me.

Nice strong lock for bicycle!, February 20, 2010
By H. Sawada (Los Angeles, CA USA)

This is very reasonable, strong bike lock. I love the combination lock, I don't like to carry the little key for bike lock and lose it. The cable is long enough to go around the bike parking bar and my bicycle 2 times. Glad I got this lock for my bicycle!

Do NOT buy it, January 14, 2011
By Ken

Do NOT buy it! The password changes randomly!! It is not the same with the number you set. I set the password as 3578, but finally, it turned out to be 0978. I was very very carefull when I set my password. I wrote the password down, and double checked it. Yes. I was mad when i cannot unlock it. it took me a day to try to find the password it "randomly" set. Do NOT buy it!!

Commuter lock, September 3, 2010
By Erwitt (LA CROSSE, WI, US)
|
|
I am a commuter who parks in a garage at work and bring my bike into my apartment at night. This is the perfect lock or running errands, locking it up outside the co-op or the post office it's super light and small. Would I use this lock to leave my bike outside overnight? Absolutely Not. Buy a U lock for that purpose..... try riding 10 miles to work everyday with an extra 4lbs and the rattle of a bigger lock! no thanks. Leave the Ulock on the rack at home and use this one to run errands around town. That's what it is designed for

After having hard time opening it up first time I could never set new code. Gone over manual/instructions, asked my friends but no luck. I never had this much trouble with similar types of locks before.
Probably it's not built for me. Don't recommend this at all.

Teeth not strong enough., July 5, 2011
By RunandDance (Middle GA)

This lock will open when it is not on the combination you set. The teeth are not substantial enough on the bar that goes into the combination dial. A good yank will open the lock no matter what the combination dial is set on.

Seemed great, but the bike is gone, June 16, 2011
By salsainchi

Well, this lock seemed like a terrific idea: harder to get undone than my old U-lock, longer cable so I could lock my bike up in non-traditional spot.
However, and unfortunately, my bike was stolen today, locked up to a sidewalk bike rack, so I'm thinking that this lock wasn't the most theft-proof lock. :(

Got this bike lock as a gift, set the 4 digit code and tested it, seemed to be working but after locking my bike up the code randomly changed. Cannot get the lock open with the code I set nor am I able to reset the code. Terrible and poorly made, do not buy unless you want to be utterly frustrated.

Do Not Buy, October 10, 2010
By JayBee
|
|
I will not be buying this product again. I did a little research before buying and heard a few things about the numbers on the lock malfunctioning, and customers not being able to open it. I recieved the item, opened it up, changed the combination as per the instructions, wrote down the number (which was the last 4 digits of a very important phone number so it is unforgettable) and when I went to open the lock....DONE! It wouldn't open, not for the preset manufacturer's combination, not for the combo I set....I was looking online a bit for a way to hack the lock and found that it is pretty simple to break the combo for a 4 digit lock...working on that before I decide to return it.
Really, it feels like the second tumbler doesn't change as I turn the dial...so it could be any number. Be Warned.

I purchased two of these bike locks several weeks ago. On the second day one of the locks would no longer close all the way. It does still lock however i feel with a bit of force you could pull it apart. The other is still in perfect condition. Luckily we live in a relatively low crime area.

This is junk!, June 16, 2011
By David P. Keys (Las Cruces, New Mexico)
|
|
The Mongoose Cable Combo Bicycle Lock is junk. Inside one week of normal use the lock tumblers jammed and would not open. I had to cut the connecting cable, which was surprisingly easy to do with a pair of wire cutters than any 10-year old could effectively operate. Don't throw your money away or risk marooning yourself without transport. This is junk, pure and simple.

I bought 2 for my kids and they both broke within 4 months. The locks won't unlock or the dials are too hard to turn. The combination is not the problem, if I force it I can get it open. My kids aren't abusing the locks, they just aren't very reliable.

Serious problems with the Mongoose Cable Combo Bicycle Lock (5-Feet), September 11, 2010
By Steve Taylor
|
|
I definitely not recommend this product! It might work out for someone else however for me it was the first and last time when I purchased a Mongoose Cable Lock. Next time I might go with a key lock...and pay more for a quality lock... :)
Here's my story:
I have purchased the Mongoose Cable Combo Bicycle Lock (5-Feet) two weeks ago because I wanted to secure my daughter's bicycle while we do some errands in grocery stores, pharmacy...etc. Luckily, I did not use it on her bike.
After receiving the product I read the instructions and set a 4 digit code. It was very easy! I have tried several times the new code in order to make myself sure that it was working correctly without any malfunction. The primary tests at home went well several times and subsequently I wrote down my 4 digit code on the back of the product's packaging paper in case I would forget it. Yesterday, I decided to go to Upstate New York to hike on a mountain with my family. I needed some security lock to keep secure our stroller at a secluded area. Obviously, I did not want to carry the stroller to the top of the mountain. So I decided to take this Mongoose Lock. I locked the stroller and we left for hiking. When we returned I was so happy that the lock was still there with our stroller.
The problem started when I wanted to unlock it. For some reason this lock did not want to open for me. It mysteriously changed the code by itself! I could not believe it! We were in a hurry to catch the last train back to NYC and this lock just did not want to open! I was mad as hell! At first I doubted my memory. Luckily, I secured the stroller with this junk to a strong looking wooden fence. In that heated moment I literally ripped apart the fence in minutes then I quickly left to catch the train. As soon as we got home I checked my note where I wrote down the code earlier and...it matched with the memorized 4 digit number! This lock simply changed the code by itself! I can't even return it because the Amazon would not refund me more than 50% of the product's price and I already threw out most of the packaging material. This lock has never seen dust, rain or hot sun! It was new -only 2 weeks old and it seriously failed me. Well, today evening I'm gonna have a little fun: I have to find a way to cut it off because it is still connected to the stroller! :)
UPDATE:
I could cut off this cable lock in 5 minutes with a simple hand saw blade. I thought this info might come handy for some unlucky people... :)

the lock is great but the mechanism used to reset the combination doesn't work. Cant change the combo at all. I hope nobody guesses the very simple combo this item was sent with. Its a bike lock, which makes it heavy enough that sending it back would be pointless. I'm pretty angry about this but I guess I'm stuck.

We live in a safe neighborhood, but bought it just in case anyway. The only times we use this are when we put the bike on the trunk mounted bike rack and go to places. That's when we lock the bike using this Mongoose lock. It is easy to use, no keys, and it seems very solid. The lock works well.

Very Shoddy Construction - Broke first day, August 30, 2011

These are very cheaply made. First Attempt to set the lock saw two small parts fall out of the lock, with results being a lock that doesn't work. Because return policy was after 30 days, shipping the lock back for refund wasn't worth it. Advise seeking alternative lock.

failed design, August 24, 2011
By Rohan Bhatt (Campbell, CA United States)

Followed the instruction on setting the combination to the letter - (have done this successfully with many other types of combination locks without problems) - In this case the lock closed up, never to open again, despite trying many combinations similar to the one entered. This is similar to comments by other reviewers - seems to be a fatally flawed design--Look elsewhere.

DO NOT WASTE your money!, December 21, 2011

Bought it for my daughter to lock her bike at school. On the 2nd day she use the lock, I receive a call from her at school saying that she cannot open the lock ... jammed up! I told her to get help from the custodian. Custodian ended up cutting the lock into 2 piece to unlock. Just cheap piece of lock that is not worth a cent.
But it was very nice of Amazon to still refund me the money. So I am good and looking for a non-Mongoose lock!
STAY AWAY from this lock!

This lock is a decent budget lock that works pretty dang well. Not a big fan of the L design of the lock part, but it's not terrible either. I had an issue setting the combination the first time, but it worked fine the second time. The lock's nothing special, but it's not cheap quality either. I'm happy with it.
