Buy Bell, Get Gel, March 31, 2009
By Sounddude™ (Florida)
|
|
I have just recently had my classic Schwinn Continental English racer (today referred to as a road bike) repaired and fixed up and have been braving the roads for about three weeks as of this writing.
So the first things I set off to buy were a new saddle, a saddle bag, a bike helmet and cycling gloves.
After reading the reviews on other sites, I decided to purchase the Bell Pro Gel Cycling Gloves.
All I can tell you is that my hands no longer hurt. The gloves are marvelous and do exactly what they are made to do, cushion your hands from the handle bars especially when you take some serious bumps or when digging in for speed and stamina training.
There are certainly higher priced gloves on the market but I'm on a budget. So after trying on a pair at a local brick and mortar store, I knew they were just what I was looking for. Here's what you'll get with the Bell Pro Gels:
1) Gloves are half finger style with a suede "leather" palm,
2) The backing fabric is 92% polyester and 8% nylon. It's broken up into two sections, a smooth, breathable section that stretches over the back of the hand, and an area that feels like terry cloth over the thumb and index finger, made for wiping the condensation from your nose on a cool day,
3) All trimming is 100% rubber which includes the straps that Velcro over the wrist to tighten the glove.
The palm is double stitched for durability. There are three gel pads and each pad is sectioned and stitched. This is a nice feature as long sections of gel over a period of time and use tend to ball up, becoming ineffective or uncomfortable. Indeed a nice feature to find in an inexpensive pair of cycling gloves. The finger ends are also stitched so they should not start to unravel right away.
Cleaning instructions are as follows:
"Hand wash in cold water, line dry, do not iron, do not dry clean."
Since the palm is not leather, washing in water won't kill the suede palm material and will help keep your gloves smelling nice, especially after a few wipes of the nose.
The Bell Pro Gel Cycling Gloves also feature a small jut out, or tongue, at the wrists that help with putting them on. Sewed to the tongue is a handy loop for hanging your gloves up to dry after a ride.
So, how do they feel? The Pro Gel Gloves are easy to put on, and feel great. The gel pads are in just the right spots to take the pressure of your hands on the handle bars. Many cyclists will cover their bars with a spongy tape or padding but I personally don't like that. I like having the bar exposed with a single wrap of standard bar tape. So the gloves pad the handle bar but still let me have that feeling of control you need for quick moves.
Will they hold up? Time will tell. And they might not last as long as an expensive pair of gloves, but for the price, I think they are a great bargain.
One note on price. If you order online, beware of stores that will try to gouge you on shipping. These gloves are very light and take up no room for shipping. I've seen online shipping prices for these gloves that basically double the price of the gloves. Buyer beware!
And be sure to see my reviews on the Giro Transfer Sport Bike Helmet, the Bell Mountain Bicycle Seat, and the Bell StowAway Bicycle Seat Bag.

Ver comfy, feel great, August 4, 2009
By AdamDZ (New York City)

Probably the best gloves I had in years. Compared to my old $45 Pearl Izumi these are winners: soft, feel really nice, easy to put on and take off, gel pads in the exactly right spots, nice finish, seams appear to be very well done, the little tongue and loop are very handy as the other reviewers mentioned: for pulling them on or hanging to dry. They wash nice, no weird smells. I bought two pairs and use them for commuting as well as weekend rides. My experience with Bell products has been positive so far: basic functionality without frills and good quality for reasonable price. All my bell gloves outlived more expensive ones.

Great glove, October 3, 2009
By sale maven (Maine)

My husband needed some new gloves. He loves riding his bicycle back and forth to work. He said the gloves have been great and the padded section are in the right section for comfort. They are also easy to get on and off and the sale price was a bonus.

Less numbness is a really, really good thing!, June 15, 2010
By Chick Lit and Chick Flick junky! (Denver, CO)
|
|
So I got it in my head I needed to get back on a bike. It had been twenty years, more than that, and it was something I needed to do for me. Plus I really, really, need to lose a bunch of weight. Riding made the most sense in terms of calories burned and how it would all feel. I love riding my bike, I always have, and this was the way to what I wanted.
First couple of miles I was so jazzed I didn't think about the numbness in my arm. Over the course of several days of pulling miles of riding I noticed the numbness kept coming back after the first few miles. So I asked some friends, did some reading, including all the reviews here and bought the Bell PRO-GEL gloves.
What a difference! Now instead of having to stop every couple of miles and shake out one hand or the other I just keep on riding! I love these gloves so much I'm going to order another pair or two. They make a bike difference in terms of comfort when riding and when you get used to them, you're not going to want to ride without them.

Great Basic Gloves for the Causual Rider, July 2, 2010
By E. Noyer (Elk Grove, CA United States)
|
|
I purchased these gloves becasuse of the mostly positive reviews. There was a negative review or two that talked about these gloves wearing out after a ride or two, but that is not my experience with them at all.
If you are a professional or avid cyclist then these gloves are probably not for you and you should really be purchaing a brand like Peral Izumi or similar. However, if you are just starting out and aren't mountain biking and more of a beginer these are excellent gloves at a very reasonable price, and I would recommend them.

Cushioning degrades fast, September 10, 2010
By sol322

I'm a cyclist that does 150+ miles per week and have hand numbness issues.
At first were pretty good but after riding time increased the padding gave up and ended up with a non comfortable glove. Good for occasional riding but not for serious. Concur with Mr. Clavel impression on them.

Only advantage... it's cheap!, August 16, 2010

Gloves are OK. Gel padding gets beaten up pretty quickly. After 60miles or so, part of it is already gone. At least they were cheap.

Cheap gel padding. Its ok!, December 7, 2009
By P. Nguyen (Houston, TX USA)
|
|
After 50+ miles and cold, warm and wet weather rides. This is an ok glove. Fits a little bigger than I like after a couple of uses (it expands). Its super cheap and works as advertised. I'll probably get a more expensive pair in the future though. Something that will not loosen after the breakin period. Can't beat Amazon's price anywhere though.

Decent gel padding,, July 2, 2010
By student_fast_shipper (Chicago, IL)
|
|
I've been wearing these gloves for 40+ mi road bike rides for a few weeks now 3-4x per week. So far so good, no signs of wear or deterioration, where the fingers meet the palm, which is where the deterioration happens fastest on this kind of glove. They are very comfortable and do a decent job of reducing hand fatigue on long rides. The sizing of the gloves is perfect. I have big hands, and the L/XL size fits very well. Overall, pretty good product.

Ok but seem big, June 23, 2010
By N. Walter (United States)
|
|
These are comfortable enough and seem to be well designed, though as others mentioned the materials do feel cheap but overall function and comfort are there and that's all that counts in this price range. My only problem is that they seem to be a little big, I got the S/M and I am a pretty average built guy at 6'1" and certainly don't consider myself as having small hands. Typically medium/large gloves fit me just fine, these I'm kind of wishing were made in an XS or something.

Bad material around thumbs, May 5, 2011
By Chris S. Barnes
|
|
I was excited to try these gloves. They felt great and fit perfectly. They were great to ride with. On about ride #10 I noticed the problem. The soft material around the thumbs (both sides) began to separate. The stitches held, the material split away from the seam. One or two more rides and these gloves will be trash. Don't waste your $$.

no more numbness!!, January 28, 2011
By D. A. Walker (Trinidad)
|
|
I used to suffer from regular hand numbness and tingling on both my road and mountain bikes. Since using these gloves, the numbness and tingling has all but become a memory. On long rides I still get a little, but nothing any where ner likie the intensity or early onset that I would get with my regular gloves which have just a suede palm. Buy this and ride in comfort!!

Clearly sized for men, January 18, 2011
By LYMBGC419 (CA USA)
|
|
I was looking for inexpensive gloves specifically for palm padding and the soft forefinger and thumb for wiping sweat. These gloves seem to be nice, but they are WAY too big for my hands. I am a young woman, petite, with smallish hands. I purchased the S/M and I can put them on and take them off without undoing the velcro. If I tug on the palm hem, I can pull the gloves open a good inch or two. Because they are too large, the padding doesn't cover the correct parts of my hands. I'm assuming since I opened the package and used them I can't return them, but I only used them once and unfortunately, I won't be using them again.

Please Check Size before buying, September 7, 2010
By Helen K (Boston, MA USA)
|
|
Recently purchased Bell PRO-Gel Cycling Gloves, in size S/M. My hands are always been Small size in Gloves, but not XS. Apparently, size S/M is so huge - I tried to tighten up clasp and even that did not work as velcro snap is too short. I has to give it to my husband ( his hand size L and it fit him nicely for his bike rides). With high pricing point I think buyers should receive more information on the sizing. Apart of the fact that gloves were spinning around my hand I liked gel cushion and breathable top.

Cheap, Cheap, Cheap!, February 1, 2010
By Critical Al (San Francisco,CA USA)
|
|
Admittedly, I have not used these gloves very much.
I can say this though; padding is spotty and not very effective, stitching is poor, materials seem cheap, thin and flimsy.
Sizing and fit are good (a very subjective issue).
I don't expect these gloves to last very long even under light use (as in my case).
About the only benefit from them is sweat absorption which keeps your hands from slipping...
In short, this is a $5 product sold for $15, somebody is making good money out there.
Not a good purchase!

Ok for the money, I guess, June 25, 2011
By Eight Hour Lunch (Salt Lake City, Utah)
|
|
I was expecting a little more when it said they were gel. A few things:
--The padding is pretty thin.
--The Small-Medium is actually small.
--I reaally hate loop/flap on the underside. I'm not sure why they designed it that way, because it tickles your wrist. Tucking it in doesn't help. I'll probably end up taking pair of scissors to it eventually.

Great product, Great price, June 21, 2011

I purchased 2 pair for me and my daughter. We are training for a 75 mile charity ride. She complained about her hands tingling after our rides. I didn't have tingling, but more hand fatigue. Well, I will say that these gloves work very well and for the price point unbeatable. My hands dont't get that sticky feeling and I like the "mini" sweat strip on back of the thumb area. Makes it effortless to wipe sweat from your brow.

Just what I needed, June 12, 2011
By Paul A

I ride a Trek hybrid and am just starting to take longer rides. Didnt want to spend alot of money on gloves until I tried them out. The Pro-gel gloves work great, protect the heel of my hands and make how long I ride depend on my legs not my hands. Great value compared to the other gloves I looked at.

OK Gloves, June 3, 2011
By M. Peter Wesly (Hawaii)
|
|
I've been riding road, mountain, and hybrid bikes - in myriad countries and climates - for over 50 years. For most of that time I've typically always used classical 'leather-palm / crochet-backs' cycling gloves, which typically cost between $7 and $15. I bought these Bell PRO-GEL cycling gloves because I'm sick of the others falling apart so quickly (they're now all made with cheap leather in Pakistan or Bangladesh, etc...), and surely the gel would be comfortable on my palms... Unfortunately there is no padding directly in the middle of the palm on these gloves, and in general the gel material doesn't seem particularly shock-absorbing. Frankly, I haven't found them to be any better regarding vibration or my fingers tingling or going to sleep than any of my previous gloves. It seems these gloves are made pretty well and with sturdy materials, although I find them hot and sweaty on my hands and, because they fit fairly tightly, quite difficult and time consuming to pull off of each finger. It seems that these gloves will perhaps last longer than my previous gloves, but I'm not sure the "gel" padding is any better than other gloves with more full-palm padding. I guess these gloves are worth $15 because they seem sturdy and reasonably comfortable, but to me they certainly don't stand out as being extra comfortable - either by design or because of "gel".

Works Great!!!, May 31, 2011
By D. Brown (Clermont, FL)
|
|
Bought 2 pair of these gloves. 1 Pair for me and the other for my wife. The Gel padding does exactly what we needed. Keeps pressure off your hands during a ride. This pressure would cause tingling in the fingers which has been stopped about 95% now. Not 100%, but surely a lot better than what it was. The only complaint is the gloves are larger than what is indicated but they work fantastic and would buy another pair if I had to.
I highly recommend these for any cyclist.

Very comfortable and stylish gloves, May 4, 2011
By jschristian44

These will do a great job at helping with my hand pain. I tend to grip the bars way too tightly, and hopefully this will stop all the rash marks and black wearing off on my hand. They are incredibly comfortable.
Update: I just rode 10 miles with these gloves and my hands were painless. I highly recommend them. Much better than having black stuff and hurting hands. I would have gotten grip tape, but I feel like my hands would still wear off the black from it.

Nice gloves, April 26, 2011
By Dale Kerrigan (Monterey, CA)

These are nice gloves. The gel has a space in the center across the heel of your hand. It turns out I lean on that space when on my aero-bars in the upright body position. So I wish the gel ran across the whole way. Otherwise they are very comfortable.

Underwhelmed, April 7, 2011
By NoBruno

The idea of gel gloves sounded, well, luxurious. But in practice the little gel pads don't really line up where you need them and the gloves felt a bit flimsy. Not sure if this is an indictment of all gel gloves or just this model, but I would not recommend this item.

Pretty decent gloves, February 19, 2011
By Ryan H (Mississippi, USA)
|
|
I enjoyed wearing this gloves when I first got them--they do look pretty nice in addition to being comfortable.
I will say that the fit is a bit off, but that's my fault for ordering a size larger "just to be safe". You can find out your size by either trying out cycling gloves at a bike shop first, or you can use whatever size you use for disposable latex gloves. I am most comfortable with a Medium sized latex glove (I know, I have small hands for a guy), and that's what my size should've been for these gloves. They still perform well though. I was in a minor crash and these gloves padded the impact so I didn't have any fractures or torn ligaments, and they definitely saved my palms from certain doom. And the gloves only got minor scratches from it.
I do recommend these, especially considering the cheap price compared to some gloves I've seen.

It works but lasts just couple of rides, December 25, 2010
By Brata
|
|
Well the overall comfort level wearing this glove is good compared to its price but the serious drawback is its longevity. After first 100km the Micro Fleece thumb got separated from the leather palm. It seems that the sewing of the Micro Fleece and the leather is bad. There is no interlocking stitches in the sewing. So the fibers slipped out and the part got separated from the leather. I had to do some patch work myself to get it fixed. After the interlocking stitches and patchwork the glove is lot better. I have done 1500km so far wearing it with 7 days back to back riding and the glove absorbs road vibration pretty well and due to the spandex back, it provides comfort over long distances. But due to its poor sewing quality I would suggest one to give it a though before buying it...

Needs attention to detail, October 29, 2010
By Saunieh
|
|
I ordered these gloves to use with a wheelchair. I'm not permanently in a chair but will be for a few months due to an auto accident. I had picked up a cheaper pair made by Bell in my local grocery store and they started to fall apart pretty quickly. I wasn't too concerned because they were just a cheap pair of gloves. I went online to check for something a little more sturdy and selected these because I already knew what to expect as far as sizing, etc. I figured for the cost of these the things I saw as a weakness in the cheaper ones would be eliminated. But, sadly the finish work on these is not good either. The manufacturing process doesn't seem to pay too much attention to finishing off the seams, etc. I'm disappointed that seams are only halfway sewn down and they have left "tales" all over them. The gel pads are great on my palms, size is good, and they do look nice. I just don't think the quality is that great. I'm one month into the three months I'll probably need these and I don't have much confidence that they're going to last the two months I've got left. Amazon is great, but these gloves...not so much.

Simple, Well Made, Awesome Gloves, September 2, 2010
By spg (Boston)

I go for a bike ride pretty much every day after work, and earlier this summer I had a bit of a scare when my sweaty hand (after a long ride) slipped off my handle and I almost wiped out big time. I decided to buy some cycling gloves so that this doesn't happen again, and I really wish I had purchased a pair sooner. These gloves are comfortable, well made, and have significant padding in all of the right spots. I use them for every ride I go on now, and I've ordered a pair for my fiancee. Highly recommended!

Bell Pro-Gel Cycling Gloves, September 1, 2010

I purchased gel gloves about 1 month ago.Gloves are of good quality, gel is comfortable and placed in the right places for maximum comfort. Gloves are light and well ventilated for warm weather use.I bought medium size, they fit well, (I usually take large). I have 2 other pairs of gloves which are different brands which are large sizes and fit slightly better when riding in warm weather- 75 degrees and up. Gloves are a little too snug in medium size when warm out. A better fit would be large for me.

These gloves deliver a decent product for the price. The gels do take stress off your hands and the sweat-absorbing material on the back side is great!

Fat fingers only, October 21, 2010
By msw (Raleigh, NC)

I wear half-finger gloves in medium size and full-finger in small (Giro and Pearl, at least, I can wear medium Novara FF). For me, it's my relatively short fingers that force me to small size in FF... my hands aren't small necessarily so medium half-fingers are more comfortable as they're not as tight.
I picked these up about 3 months ago in S/M sze when it was still hot as h3ll. The gel is nice, better than some more expensive glove, but I'm getting ready to pitch them b/c the fabric at the end of the fingers keeps riding up. This is especially the case in the thumb, where it bunches up and is distracting and uncomfortable even on short rides.
If you have even small-ish fingers, I wouldn't recommend this glove. Assume there is no Small size and S/M = Medium. Even those who wear Large size gloves would probably find the S/M size of this one a better fit.
Disappointed b/c a great price, but I just got one Giro full-fingers.

So-so, September 22, 2011

For the price, I'm not complaining, but these gloves are only so-so. I have somewhat tiny hands, but by no means baby hands, and these things don't mold well. They are loose and move around while I'm riding.
I also didn't get much cushion support from them; my palms still felt sore. Maybe I'm an amateur rider and doing something wrong, but they didn't work so well for me.

They Don't Last, December 26, 2011
By Gali

I use gloves for my manual wheelchair, so obviously they get a lot of wear. But I keep having to replace the Bells, which is frustrating and gets expensive. Also, they only come in black. I want more color options. I hope to find a brand that lasts longer but still fits well, as these do (the fingerless ones, not the fingered)

Solid gloves, December 9, 2011
By J. Gorman (Arlington Heights, IL)

I've been using these on most rides. I like the style and the fit. I have short fingers and small hands, and I find that I can slide these on and off without having to undo the velcro clasp. Despite that, they fit solidly and I have no fear of them being too lose or falling off.

Bell cycling glove review, November 25, 2011
By Leroy

I've had this product for a year now. I wore them for awhile under mitts to commute in winter, but then I got a full-fingered glove/mitt combo that fit more snugly and kept me warm. Over the summer I used them to commute, and they worked fine. I've actually mostly been using it as a pair of gym gloves. They've held up pretty well.

Great for the money., September 23, 2010

These are good basic biking gloves that are cheap. They are just as good as some of the bike shop gloves that are sold for five times as much. If you are into really high-priced biking gear, maybe you can use electrical tape or something to cover the label.

The gloves work great so far. They are a little big though but I guess that's what happens with only 2 sizes...

Good glove for long rides, September 19, 2010
By mayhem321

The gel in these gloves is great for long rides. I have another pair of Bell S/M gloves without the gel that fit great, but this pair is big. The gel is worth the bigger size though. I have these gloves for two years and they are still in good shape.

Simple, Well Made, Awesome Gloves, September 2, 2010
By Steve (HOLDEN, MA, United States)

I go for a bike ride pretty much every day after work, and earlier this summer I had a bit of a scare when my sweaty hand (after a long ride) slipped off my handle and I almost wiped out big time. I decided to buy some cycling gloves so that this doesn't happen again, and I really wish I had purchased a pair sooner. These gloves are comfortable, well made, and have significant padding in all of the right spots. I use them for every ride I go on now, and I've ordered a pair for my fiancee. Highly recommended!
