This tiny foot pod is small enough to attach to your shoelaces or fit in the mid-sole pocket of compatible shoes. It's always ready to use, and a small, replaceable watch battery powers the foot pod for a year of training. Unlike simple pedometers, this foot pod uses advanced MEMS inertial-sensor technology to analyze your movements and is responsive to stride-length changes to achieve 98 percent accuracy for speed and distance. Additionally, this sensor measures running cadence to help you optimize your training.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works Well, December 18, 2009
By Lee Abraham (Cheyenne, WY)
I bought the foot pod so I could use my 405CX on an indoor track and have been pleased with the results.

Calibration was easy. On the Garmin 010-00658-30 Forerunner 405CX GPS Sport Watch with Heart Rate Monitor (Blue) you can calibrate it using the GPS or a 400m track. I chose to use the GPS and it had me run .66 of a mile. Was easy and seems to be pretty accurate. The only issue is that you need to calibrate it at the pace you usually run at. For instance I usually run at a 10 minute/mile pace but since I was only running .66 miles while calibrating it I ran at a much faster pace throwing it off a bit.

Running on a .10 mile indoor track after 3.5 miles it was off by about 50' more by the end of the run. Not perfect by any means but I could probably calibrate it more (or you can adjust it manually) to key it in.

I don't use it running while outside, but if you don't like the pace setting of the GPS you can have the watch display pace according to the foot pod instead.

Installation and removal is easy. The instructions say it will fit in an insole pocket if your shoe has one, but mine does not. To attach it to the laces you slide the mounting bracket under two X's where your shoe laces cross then snap the pod over the top. To remove you have to press a tab that unhooks it. It's very secure and takes a lot of pressure to remove it. I have no fear that it will come off while running.

I am very happy with the pod, it works very well, and is easy to use. If you want to use your GPS watch on a treadmill or indoor track during the winter months, it's a must have.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Sorry, people, there is a serious design flaw here..., June 6, 2010
By Responsive Reader (Eastern Seaboard, USA)
I've read all the reviews for this Garmin foot pod and its predecessor, and the majority of the reviews are positive and reviewer recommended. However, I'm going against the grain on this one by not giving it 5 stars. This product merits only about 3.5 stars, but since I cannot give 1/2 a star, I'll have to make it 3 by truncation. Why? Because this foot pod doesn't deserve 4 stars (to me) for two reasons.

For one, there is a serious design flaw, as I shall soon explain. Granted, Garmin makes a functionable foot pod; mines paired to my 405 right out of the box with no battery problems, and the data obtained by it is usable and very informative for my running improvement -- these are plusses. However, this foot pod was made to be used universally on footwear, virtually any type of running shoe. However, the design does not allow it to be used on any running shoe -- it slips out of the laces much too easily! Considering the price tag for this item, designing a foot pod that is meant to be used universally, but is only applicable to SPECIFIC running shoes (i.e., those shoes that can accommodate a foot pod, such as Nike+ or Addidas) means that the design does not befit its intended application. Case and point: I run with this foot pod in a pair of Nike Turbo 8 Shox, and it continually slips out of my shoe laces, totally disrupting my run and training, and putting my investment at high risk of ruin by kicking it when it pops out. To relieve this problem, I stick the foot pod deep down in the side, underneath the side flap that covers the tongue, and to keep it in place, I have to tie the shoe laces super extra tight, which is very uncomfortable, and not the way you want to run during marathon training. When I use the Nike Shox (my main running shoe during intervals, tempos, and medium-long runs), all my runs completely suck with this foot pod. However, I cannot improve without the data it gives me, therefore, its a bittersweet satisfaction.

Secondly, the battery is a pain to replace. Granted, accessing the battery is easy, but removing the battery from the cover requires a prying tool and careful hands. Everything about this foot pod is plastic, plastic, plastic, and its very easy to scar your equipment trying to remove the battery. If you are not careful, you can very easily damage your battery cover, and then you will have serious problems.

The cost for this product is too high for such a narrow potential of ruin. Garmin needs to re-design this foot pod so that it can be used according to its purpose. Either market it as a foot pod designed for a particular kind of running shoe, or re-design it so that it can be used on virtually any running shoe, as stated. As it stands, this foot pod is not designed for all running shoes.

I am not bashing Garmin, because I purchase all of my GPS equipment from Garmin. However, I will have to say that they dropped the ball terribly on this particular accessory. Many people may not agree with me. Perhaps if I had running shoes that accommodate foot pods, I'd feel likewise that this is an awesome product deserving 4-5 stars. I cannot say this for the shoes I use, and I can only rate this foot pod 3 out of 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Works well, January 24, 2010
By NOV8TR (Santa Barbara, Ca.)
I purchased this unit with the intention of using it on my elliptical trainer during those times when it was too late or too wet/windy to walk/jog outside. My Forerunner 305 already accurately records distance and speed without the Foot Pod as long as I'm outside (my preferred method of exercise), and the cadence tracking capability was not all that important to me (I'm an old man, not an athlete in training). It took several iterations to make this gizmo work with the elliptical trainer (Schwinn 430), but I did finally get it to work. I was able to get it to match the cadence, distance, speed and calories expended, to within just a few percent. Unfortunately, the cam mechanism I designed to make the foot pod think I was wearing it on my shoe while running, made enough noise to make my spouse agitated, and therefore rendered my solution impractical. I have replaced my "elliptical trainer solution" with a Garmin bicycle cadence sensor (non contact and therefore totally silent). So now that I already own it, I clip on the Foot pod for my outdoor activities (which is what it is designed for), and it does add one more set of data points for me to use, which I now admit is helpful (cadence). I have used it on a tread mill (Cardiac rehabilitation after the second heart attack), and it works quite well. If I was a hard core runner, this would be a "must have item". In my opinion this little gadget (at more than $80 after shipping) isn't worth the expense unless you are using it indoors to assist in recording data on a tread mill. It is well built and easy to clip on your shoe laces. The instruction manual that come with it is next to useless, but it is a simple enough to use without much instruction if you are not too picky about getting very precise data output (us engineer types are never satisfied with the data we are given!). I would recommend this product to an athlete in training, or to someone who spends a lot of time on a tread mill.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Pretty Amazing!, December 1, 2009
By eeagle (Melbourne, FL, United States)
I bought this foot pod to use with my Forerunner 50. The 010-11092-00 is the latest model sometimes listed as SDM4 (ANT+) and is quite small; barely bigger than the CR2032 3V Lithium battery that powers it. It easily "paired" with my Forerunner. What was most impressive was the distance recorded on my first use (w/o calibration) was exactly the distance I had recorded previously with a GPS device. From what I have read the pod accelerometers sense and compensate for stride and speed differences...pretty amazing.

Edit: Amazon swiched products. This review is for the Garmin 010-11092-00 Foot Pod Personal GPS Tracker. For some reason they switched this product page to the old Garmin foot pod. I reviewed the new model.

I bought the foot pod so I could use my 405CX on an indoor track and have been pleased with the results.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent, August 29, 2010
By Kaitlin Fleming
I bought this to go with my Garmin 405 purchased earlier this year. I love the watch w HR monitor... it has completely changed the way I plan my runs, that is I do not have to plan them out by driving a route in my car with the trip meter going, and then forget the route halfway through my run. Plus its a lot of fun to be able to come home and look at all of the data that was downloaded including the map of my run. When the temperature started to get super hot and humid this summer, I unfortunately had to switch to mainly treadmill running. After getting my 405, it seemed like more of a pain keeping track of my training manually (I know I know, I never had an issue with it before but I guess I am spoiled now). Anyways, on to the foot pod. It did not take me long after returning to treadmill running to determine that I really wanted the foot pod.

I read a ton of Amazon reviews before purchasing, and all I have to say is I love it. Its extremely accurate. I did not calibrate it before my 1st attempt because I wanted to see how it started out. After the 1st 4 miles it was off from what the treadmill readout behind 0.02. Next attempt, ahead by about 0.01 after 4 miles. Also seems accurate from the indoor track I use sometimes. Keep in mind that the treadmill might also be off this amount and the foot pod more accurate. Needless to say I will just leave it with factory setting.

I had read a couple of reviews that mentioned it coming out of laces while running. To this I say... USER ERROR. It may 1st seem that the foot pod is all one piece, but if you look at it from bottom or side you can tell that there is a clip on the bottom. The first time I tried to remove the clip, I was a little nervous I would break it, but did not. Very easy to put on laces.

Some other users also mentioned battery problems. I have been using mine for about a month now with no issues.

The first time you use it make sure you check your settings on your Garmin watch so that it doesn't search for satellite and knows to get data from the food pod. Also when you get into training mode, the watch detects your HR monitor first then about 5-10 seconds later the foot pod.

Overall great product that I would recommend to anyone who runs on a regular basis.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Works Great, October 23, 2009
By J. Call
Overall great product. Easy to use and simple connection to the Garmin 305. I use mostly for teadmill workouts. Only concern is that if you plan on running different tempos during the same run, it's accuracy is a little off. For example, if calibrate it for my slow 9:30 min pace, and then do a speed interval at 7:30, the distance will be off slightly unless stop and recalibrate to the 7:30 pace or initially calibrate it to somewhere in between. However, I love the cadence feature, which has really helped me improve my form and pace (I was running 159 steps/minute and now I run 180 after training with it for a couple of weeks). It fits securely into my shoelaces and can be removed easily when I run outside and want to use the GPS features of the watch. (The footpod will override the GPS distance if you try to use them both)

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Poor connectivity?, October 4, 2010
By dallasrpi (Troy, NY United States)
Objective:
I bought this product with the intent of tracking and improving my cadence. A lot of noise recently has been made about how having a cadence of 180 or higher is the best thing to do for efficiency and to reduce injuries. I figured instant feedback from my Garmin 305 instead of listening to a metronome would be the way to go and I can analyze throughout the whole run on Garmin Connect afterwards to see where I may be dropping lower than I want.

Performance:
Unfortunately the device drops the footpod signal randomly throughout the run. A quick look at one of my workouts from the Garmin Connect page confirms it. The length of the signal drops are more obvious on shorter runs. Naturally this will skew the average cadence and makes the data harder to read.
[...]

Setup:
When you turn on the device it asks you if you would like to use the footpod indoors. If you answer yes it will ignore your satellite signal and just use the footpod for tracking. I made this mistake a few times as it is quite misleading because I was not indoors and had a signal. Anyways this will also likely be inaccurate because of the times of dropped signal. If you answer no to the question the Garmin will use it for measuring your cadence. For the record I also reread the documentation that came with the device to ensure I was using it properly (you need to have it pointed a certain direction)

Conclusion:
Its not completely worthless for looking at your current cadence when it has signal but its disappointing considering the price. Perhaps on different versions of the Forerunner this is less of an issue or maybe there is a firmware update that will fix this. I wouldn't recommend buying it for the Garmin 305 based on my experience so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect for running cadence tracking, September 12, 2010
By CFS (Temecula CA USA)
I use it exclusively for tracking my cadence while road/street running. I do not train using treadmills so I can't comment on that application. I use a 305 Forerunner and, the GPS is still engaged for tracking distance while the pod just tracks cadence. Setup/pairing was done in 15 seconds. Great product.

Garmin Foot Pod

I am a firefighter and one of the workouts that I do 3, 4 and sometimes 5 times a week is climb stairs. I bought this product so I could use my Forerunner to keep track of my stair climbs. I also run a good bit so having the combined information from my workouts would be useful. The Foot Pod is worthless!
1. Every time I turn on my Forerunner I have to scan for the Foot Pot to get it to connect.
2. Calibration, I have tried about 7 times to calibrate the Foot Pod. 5 of the times it said calibration failed re-calibrate.
The 2 times it work the calibrations were not even close to each other.
3. Inaccurate, I tried to manually put in my pace. Half mile of steps is around 390 steps. Went to work out and was doing a pace of 89 steps a minute according to the stair stepper, Forerunner was showing that I was doing between 35 and 45 steps a minute.
I really had hoped this product would make keeping all my work out data accurate and easy to compare. Don't waste your money on the Foot Pod or the Forerunner unless all your work outs are out doors where the GPS can get a signal. If you work out indoors save the money and you can set up an account at Garmin Connect and manually add your work out data.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  So far so good, January 26, 2010
By alefone (Omaha Ne)
I got this for indoor tracks and treadmill running. I have done about a 100 miles so far. I have not calibrated it yet, but it is really close to the tread mill read out--about 4 hundredths difference over 6 miles. What I have noticed is that how you attach it changes the registered pace. Once you get it counting pace the way you want continue to attach it the same way after that.

Overall the pod is small and does not bother me. I really like being able to upload the winter workouts to the Garmin log. I recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Know what you're buying., July 18, 2010
By Heartless (United States)
This was a naive, impulsive purchase. I have a Forerunner 305 and thought I would be able to use the pod with the 305 as a pedometer. However, the current 305 firmware will not report the number of paces, only cadence. Garmin doesn't appear to be motivated to provide a pedometer feature on a aging model like the 305. The pod will permit measurement of speed and distance without the GPS once the pod is calabrated to your stride. Oh well, live and learn.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Won't Work With Elliptical or Other Non-Impact Machines, February 27, 2010
By John B. Kalla (Aurora, CO USA)
I bought the Garmin Foot Pod because I spend a lot of time indoors on an elliptical machine, since my knees are too beat-up to run anymore. Unfortunately, the foot pod is meant to measure impacting exercise machines, like a treadmill, and not the non-impact machines like an elliptical. I wish I'd known that before I paid almost $100 for it! I'm sure that little tidbit is listed somewhere on Garmin's site, but I couldn't find it.

I imagine it will probably also work well as a fail-safe for running through areas where there is spotty GPS coverage, so the unit's not completely useless for me, but it's disappointing.

Otherwise, the unit seems solid enough and has not fallen off my shoe. Of course, I'm not running with it, either. It also connects easily to my 405CX.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent Addition to Training Suite, October 4, 2010

The Garmin Footpod was a great addition to my training gear, it works well and has never had a problem. I use this product nearly everyday and it performs well and keeps pace/cadence accurately. It should be calibrated regularly using the GPS outdoors and it can become a good tool for indoor runs as well. Recommend for anyone wanting to gather more training data.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Attach to laces at your own risk, January 31, 2011

I received the Foot Pod and promptly installed it on my shoe as directed by the instructions. I got back from my very first run, bent to change out of my shoes, and...there it was...gone! The mounting clip was still sitting under the laces but no pod! So $60 is sitting on my running route somewhere. Very disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A Beautiful Companion to Forerunner for the Indoor, May 21, 2011
By Alex Tai
Got this together with my Forerunner 310XT. Compact (it is smaller than the foot-pod available for Polar watches), fast detection (within 3 secs), ease of putting it on (thanks to its quick-snap on feature without the need to unlace). A very useful gadget for goal-oriented runners who do treadmill workouts. The foot-pod will give you very accurate foot-stride turnover (cadence, speed and pace.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Useful for Treadmill Running with 305, January 24, 2011
By K. Larsen
I purchased this during the winter so that I could have the same pace, distance, and heart rate data after an indoor treadmill run as I would have for an outdoor run using my GPS watch. I considered the Nike + (Nike Plus) system, but decided to go with this because I wanted to have all my run data in one place, on the Garmin Connect site, regardless of whether it was an indoor or outdoor run. I was not particularly interested in cadence data when I purchased it but have since become interested, so it's nice to be able to use it on outdoor runs as well. It was really easy to install into my Nike + (Nike Plus) compatible shoes, and really easy to pair with my Forerunner 305 watch. It was accurate for me right out of the package without calibration. As much as I prefer to run outdoors, when I AM stuck running indoors, this helps motivate me.

The only downside to this product is the price. I think it is definitely worth the price if you will use the product, but when Nike + (Nike Plus) is so much cheaper, it's a close call. It depends on how much the convenience of having your data in one place is worth to you, and also the convenience of having instant feedback on your wrist instead of hearing it through your headphones, etc. Overall I'm very happy with this purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Should have gotten it in the first place, August 9, 2010
By John (Pennsylvania)
This foot pod works in sync with several Garmin products--for me, the FR60 watch and heart rate monitor. The foot pod provides additional information essential to training, particularly distance and steps. It took me a bit to get it sync-ed (when in doubt read the manual--really), but then was easily calibrated, using data from my GPS (would have been equally easy on a track or measured distance). I was particularly pleased to note its sturdy clip to my shoe.

I bought the pod for when I do treadmill runs and it has worked like a champ. I log all my runs on Garmin Connect and I am glad that I can now log the treadmill runs. It is hard to monitor training and how my performance is getting better if I can't log all my runs. I recommend the pod to anyone that runs indoors and out.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Does the job. Not durable., July 18, 2011
By Andrew (Brooklyn, NY)
Key uses: Measuring distance when running on a treadmill (or when you don't get satellite reception). Measures cadence per minute.

Pro's: It measures distance and cadence, and pretty accurately too. It's typically off by approx. 2-4%. It's better than Nike Plus of years past.

Con's: It's not designed for long-term use. My battery died within 1 year of use. Replacing the battery is difficult (there's no groove to slide a fingernail or screwdriver to pry the battery lid off). Once opened, there's no mechanism to release the dead battery. I had to use a pushpin. In the process, I damaged the soft plastic at the perimeter of the battery lid. (And I'm no klutz - the design is bad.) There's also a slim red o-ring around the battery lid, presumably to prevent water from entering the device - it promptly broke when I did get the lid open. From now on, I'll have to avoid running through puddles.

In short: Get the foot pod if you do a lot of running on a treadmill, and want to keep track of those workouts. The Garmin is useless for treadmill running without a foot pod.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  DISAPPOINTMENT!!!, August 27, 2010
By Cheated Customer
I am utterly disappointed with the purchase of this gadget.
The manufacturers and marketers should ensure adequate information is given at the point of purchase.
only after receipt of the item was i informed through the operating manual that it needs a "forerunner" to be operative. in other words, a cheap and dishonest means of getting potential customers to keep buying support units that should have been included as a total package.
after the purchase of the "forerunner" what other part will you inadvertently include. i am keeping the garmin foot pod as arelic and constant reminder of a fraud!
the 1 star rating is that a human being concieved the idea (and only because the review wont go ie be submitted without a rating)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Complements my Garmin Forerunner 405CX, February 26, 2012
By CDLP (Chicago, IL USA)
I bought this to start tracking my treadmill training runs over the winter training season with my Garmin Forerunner 405CX. So far it has worked great. It seems very accurate after calibration. It generally measures within about 1% of the treadmill over a 5 mile run. It's a very simple "set it up and forget about it" deal. When I turn on the Garmin it soon tells me that it detected the foot pod and asks if I want to use it indoors. (Don't say yes if you're running outdoors, else it will ignore the GPS). That's it. The Garmin foot pod will track your workout and you can analyze your cadence, pace and distance when you're done.

Pros:
Accurate
Compact Design
Easy To Use
Gives A Quick Reading
Versatile

Cons:
None

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good addition for bad weather, February 4, 2011
By Stefan_84
I got this after purchasing the forerunner 305 for indoor use. It's surprisingly accurate compared to the treadmill total miles after a 30-60min run. I am yet to try it outside due to the so far cold weather. It attached easily to your shoelace and I can't see it fall of without impact. I keep it on my running shoes though, not sure how it would hold if you would take it on and off repeatedly, it is plastic after all. The only reason I'm not giving this product 5 stars is it's price. I wish they would include this with the purchase of the watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I'm finally free from Nike+, June 11, 2010
By MyNeChimKi (Lovettsville, VA United States)
I'm a new runner and I have been using the Nike+ system for several years now. Sadly the footpod for the Nike+ system never worked well and would time out if I had periods of inactivity or too slow activity.

I am happy to have found Garmin and their awesome products!! I do a lot of treadmill running and I purchased the Garmin footpod to use with my Garmin Forerunner 405CX and my Edge 705 bike computer. i'm not sure that the footpod syncs with the 705 since I've only ever tried to use it when I was outside and the 705 was using the GPS function to track my location, but I did receive cadence info from it so it must be doing something! The footpod works beautifully with the Forerunner 405CX. It's an essential accessory to anyone who does treadmill training in addition to outdoor running.

Syncing the footpod with the Garmin devices is simple and I've never experienced the connectivity issues that I did with the Nike+ system. My footpod is always recognized within seconds of beginning and I get great feedback on my various devices.

I have also used this with the FR60, but not on a regular basis. I didn't have any problems connecting with that device either. Garmin really has their stuff together with the ANT+ technology!!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Too Far Off, March 28, 2011
By Mike (Boston)
Auto calibrated on a 400 meter track using the inside lane. Used 800 meters for distance. 305 said the calibration was successful. Then I ran a 5 mile loop I've been running for almost 20 years. I know the splits in this loop very well and have measured with my car, my bike's Cateye, and the 305's GPS. At the end of this loop, which measures just over 5.1 miles, the pod was only at 4.75 miles. That's too far off for me. Even the treadmills at my local gym aren't that bad.
One other issue is that there seems to be some crosstalk between the foot pod and my HR monitor. I bought this foot pod so I could use it on the treadmill when the weather's too bad to run outside but if you ask me this thing is not reliable at all.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Very accurate, October 12, 2010
By Ed (Wyomissing, Pa)
I've used the GPS based Garmin Forerunner 305 for years, but after moving to a new area I seem to have a hard time getting a GPS lock in my new location. I got tired of waiting for a GPS lock before starting my run so I decided to try this out. It was definitely not 98% accurate out of the box for me (more like 94%), but after calibration it's about dead on. In fact, I might trust it more than the 305. I calibrated it at a normal pace, and recently ran a 5k race (3.1miles) at a faster pace than the one I calibrated at. It reported 3.09 miles for that race. That's 99.7% accurate, which is good enough for me. I also tried running some trails along with my 305, and they were within a couple percent of each other.

I tried sprinting with it on a track, and did find the distance was off by a good amount, but for normal runs it seems very accurate. It isn't perfect, but when I upload the GPS data and look at the trace, it's obvious that GPS isn't perfect either as it shows me running through my neighbors yards and cutting some sharp corners.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Stopped working after 6 months, January 12, 2010
By Chris (USA)
I bought one of these as a kit to go with the Garmin Forerunner 50. It worked OK for about 6 months and then stopped working altogether. It turns on by shaking it (or walking) to get the sensor to wake up and the LED flashes to let you know it's on. Even after replacing the battery with a new one I could not get the sensor to turn on (no LED flashes, no data collected on the Garmin). I used it for about 500-600 miles of running, and it was not over-exposed to moisture (I typically run on a treadmill when it rains hard).

When it did work, it was difficult to calibrate my pace. I measured several areas where I run and no matter how many times I tried calibrating the unit to these known distances, it would give me results that were close but still an average of 10-15% off. The only time it worked really well was if you maintained roughly the same pace and stride pattern as was used when you calibrated it, and ran on the same types of surfaces. So for trail runs or tempo/interval/sprint days, it was always off. Different shoes threw it off also.

I would have given it 1 1/2 stars if that was possible. Two seems acceptable since I did get some use out of it and it did help me to work on maintaining a steady pace during my runs (even if the recorded pace was wrong).

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice for Indoor Workouts, September 2, 2011
By anniyan
Garmin footpod is the one i was looking for to track my Treadmill Runs and i am glad i got it.
I own Nike+ shoes so this one fits inside the shoe pocket.I paired this footpod with my wahoo fisca key and it works perfect.
I just put it in my shoe pocket and started walking. My wahoo app on the iphone automatically recognized this footpod and thats all it takes to set this up!! Gives lots of details like cadence, speed, lap speed etc.

Only disadvantage i found is, it wont be useful for elliptical workouts. It only works with running/walking.Apart from that it does what it is supposed to do.

Small, light, and secure. Works as advertised, very precise after calibration. I've also used on the stree with the GPS not only for distance but to capture cadence data. I've practicing and working on cadence, so this accessorie came in a perfect time. Seems very secure, not worried about loosing it if installed correctly on your shoe laces.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very Accurate, March 31, 2011
By SBRnut
The new Foot Pod is right on the money, as far as I can tell. I have tested it while training with a friend, who has the older model, and they were both dead on. This new model is even a little smaller than the original. Very worth the money! It is accurate for both speed work as well as long distance. Stays put on the shoe laces and can barely tell it's there! Great product!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Foot pod, February 4, 2011
By Bigski
This product is great. It can be used to get info both inside and out. The only complaint I have is periodically looking down to see if it is still on my shoe. Maybe I'm just paranoid. It is like a smart pedometer when used inside. I have a Forerunner 305 and training with that, the heart rate strap, and foot pod is the most fun you can have with your clothes on. I love the ability to keep track of my progress indoors and out. Great product.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect Pod!, August 23, 2010
By luv those high tech gadgets (Indianapolis, IN USA)
The foot pod synched right up to the watch and has worked great right out of the box. It was very easy to calibrate to my stride (I have the Garmin 405) and I expect it to come in handy this winter when I have to do treadmill runs. I continue to use it now because it apparently helps the watch fill in if I run under trees or thru an area with poor reception from the satellites.
I'll have to get back and re-review it after the winter but for now I'm very happy with the purchase.
And as usual Amazon had the best price and the fastest shipping!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect Addition to my Forerunner 405, August 2, 2010
By Craig Frooninckx (Phoenix, AZ)
Due to weather and health conditions, I've had to move my training in doors. Weather I use the track or the treadmill, this thing has helped a lot. It tracks the distance and it's easy to move from shoe to shoe. The price tag put me off on buying this for awhile, but now that I have, it's great. I still think it is pricey, but I'm getting more comfortable with the price I paid when I track my workouts. It helps keep me motivated when I can't use the GPS. Word of advise, turn off GPS when you know it won't work well (for example on the treadmill or indoor track), it will save your battery and keep from getting false reports from the GPS over-riding the foot pod.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect Companion to Garmin 405CX, April 15, 2010
By P. Abrey
I bought this to fine tune my running (cadence).

When paired with the Garmin 405CX I can now choose how I track speed (GPS or Foot Pod) and cadence data is published for my runs. Furthermore, when I have to use the treadmill, I can still track the run. I have logged over 100 miles with it so far with no issues.

The only reservation I have is regarding durability - I do a lot of trail running and am concerned it might get dislodged should it get a little rough treatment. It is much smaller than my old Polar 200SD foot pod, you don't notice it's there...

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent Accessory for Run Training, April 13, 2010
By Curtiss B. Samuel
The Garmin Foot Pod accessory works as expected. This device fits Nike+/Adidas running shoes fitted with the recess inside the shoe or it can be attached to the string of your shoe with an included clip. Foot Pods allow for indoor running or outdoor running where reduced GPS signal will compromise the accuracy of your run training. The cadence feature when coupled with the Garmin 310XT watch provide valuable information for those who want to improve their running form. With no calibration this foot pod appears to be very accurate when measured against the distance on an outdoor track. Again, this product just works as expected.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great product!, July 18, 2011
By John Doe (USA, Chicago)
I love this Garmin Foot Pod but the tech support is awful. Nothing against women but for technical products it's been my experience that males are far more knowledgeable than women. I.e., my 2008 CBR1000RR motorcycle, I called American Honda and the woman I talked to was useless. That said, at Garmin Tech Support, a tech by the name Anna was telling me flat out I should never use my Foot Pot outdoors and should only use it indoors. Well little did she understand that is certainly not true and was inaccurate because the foot pod works great outdoors. Then when I tried to explain to her how I was calibrating it by "GPS" method as opposed to "Distance" she kept talking over me saying I had to keep the GPS on. It was clear to me she had no idea what she was talking about and to make matters worse, she said her excuse for not knowing the foot pod features well is because most of the support techs never use it. Well I don't need to hear that and when I called back and spoke to another gentleman, he knew exactly what I was referring to so here is another example of many I can list where women I have spoke to were just technically inept. Don't get me wrong, I encountered some incompetent men but not nearly as much as the women who hold these positions.

Anyway this Foot pod is pretty accurate, I do recommend calibrating using a track as opposed to the GPS method of calibration. It was off maybe a hair but more or less I bought this because when I run bank of america this fall, the tall buildings I know will make my GPS way off pace.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Works perfectly but needs a different way to hold it to your shoe, January 1, 2012
By Snowmonster (West Lafayette, Indiana)
I got this for Xmas about 10 days ago (came from Amazon) to use with my new Garmin Forerunner 610 (a fantastic GPS watch, by the way). It does a great job with measuring cadence while doing a GPS run outdoors and also seems to work well on the treadmill for indoor runs. I've done several outdoor runs and about 2 or 3 treadmill runs so far with it. Just calibrated the foot pod with the GPS watch yesterday so my treadmill runs should be more accurate now. Calibration with the 610 was a piece of cake. Just put the watch in calibration mode and then run until it tells you that you're done.

The only complaint I have is about the clip that comes with it. I only fell down once last year while running outside (at 5:00 AM in the dark on a bad sidewalk, a car was coming the other way) and the foot pod went flying off my shoe. I didn't realize it had fallen off until I got home. I was more worried about the large gash on my hand at the time. Of course, I knew where it fell off because it likely happened around where I fell. You could always figure it out by looking at the Garmin Connect website and seeing where your cadence dropped off by looking at the map.

There is a solution for this. I already own a Marware Nike+ foot pod holder (available on Amazon) and that would work fine as the Garmin sensor is about the same size of the Nike+ foot pod, but I'm a bigger fan of the LaceLid holder because you can simply remove the foot pod from the holder and move it between shoes (if you have multiple LaceLids) or take it out if you want to wear that shoe later in the day without running your battery down in the Garmin foot pod. Just Google "LaceLid" and you should find a link for it. I haven't had the Garmin or Nike+ foot pods fall out of a LaceLid holder yet. I don't work for them, by the way.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Easy to Use but needs calibrating., December 31, 2011
By frank
I purchased this for my wife and I along with the 305 Forerunner. It was fairly easy to sync with the 305. You just need to make sure you activate the Footpod by shaking it. The directions were not clear as to how to sync it, but it was fairly intuitive. The biggest issues is accuracy. It definitely needs to be calibrated. I ran 7 miles on my treadmill and it told me I ran 7.93 miles. There is a setting to calibrate it, but it is not clear how to do it. It shows a calibration factor of 1000 to start, so we are assuming we just need to adjust it accordingly. In my case, 1000 x 7.0 miles/7.93 miles = 883. So, I set it to 883 and we'll see how it tracks. May have to adjust it again to zero it in. We got this because we do a lot of indoor treadmill work and we wanted to track all of our miles using the 305. I think this will work out great, but will take some time to get it where we need it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  It works!, March 15, 2012
By Vysionist (San Jose, CA USA)
This device is a must have. Garmin products are ten times better than what's out there. My only gripe with this and me deducting one star is that it could be a lot smaller. Seriously, I need all the weight reduction as much as possible and I certainly don't want anything to be that visible. When it comes to racing, ppl like myself would like things to be simple and flush mounted. I would like to concentrate on racing and not worry about other things.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice concept, won't work in Nike+ pocket., October 4, 2011
By A. Swab (Middletown, DE USA)
Purchased this pod to use with my Garmin Forerunner 305 when in the gym on the treadmill. I also really liked the design in that it would fit into my Nike+ shoes and I wouldn't have to deal with the ugly lace mount alternative. Prior to purchase, I figured Garmin really got this right in that they had a replaceable battery pod (vs. the standard Nike+ pod which is a throw away).

Upon initial reciept of the unit, I set out to calibrate it. Had issues right away with "Calibration Failed", etc. and immediately went online with Garmin tech support. They were very responsive timewise and eventually suggested that I add a drop of baby oil (?) to the battery contacts. The advise here was that there was some sort of "resistive layer" built up on the contacts cousing momentary loss of power and signal to my Forerunner. I tried this fix skeptically and it made no difference. I then requested a product exchange thinking that maybe there was something wrong with my specific foot pod. The replacement came and the same thing happened . . . momentary or long term loss of signal and my resulting pace/speed was all whacked out.

All the while in doing these experiments, if I ever put the pod on the laces - everything worked like a charm.

I did some more internet research and found that other people who had the same issue thought that there was some flex in the pod (when mounted in the shoe sole pocket) during use which caused loss of contact with the battery. I now believe that this is the case. So from now on, I'll always use it on the external lace mount. Even though I don't like this alternative, at least now I have two (for the price of one) in case one pops off and gets lost.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for a rainy day!, September 19, 2011
By Scott Taft (Southlake, TX)
The sole reason I purchased this was to be able to digitally record my runs logged on treadmills during rainy days or extremely hot weather. This has been perfect for those two.

A side benefit that I hadn't even considered was the fact that I can now use this to track my running cadence and for the first time am working to increase my running cadence to 180 steps per minute. This is definitely helping me to work on my running efficiency and as far as I am concerned is icing on the cake with regards to this purchase.

Unlike Nike shoe sensors, it has a user-replaceable battery & fits well in a mid-sole pouch of Nike Plus shoes. So expensive so small and so easily to lose.

Note:
- Haven't tried it on a shoelace pouch instead of the mid-sole pouch if it's going to throw off the stats.
- Haven't used it in the rain.

Wish all running shoes comes with the mid-sole pouch for these.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Does what its designed to do, March 31, 2011
By RevJVegas
Works great for those days when your stuck running on the treadmill inside and want to get a good idea of what your distance is...sometimes those meters on the treadmill are not really that accurate.

Plus it is really cool to get the added data/info into the Garmin Training Center.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Training Aid, March 26, 2011
By KDUB2051
The garmin foot pod is great if you are looking to improve your running cadence (turn-over). Foot pod locks tightly on shoe laces and calibration was a snap using my FR405. Works as advertised.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  So far so good, February 21, 2011
By mareena31
I bought this to use with my Garmin forerunner. Shipping was super fast. I have not calibrated it yet but have used it a numerous indoor treadmill short runs and a few longer runs outdoors with known distances. It appears to be fairly accurate without calibrating it. My garmin forerunner recognizes it right away at each time I start it up. Have not had a situation outside yet where I lost satellite coverage to see how well the foot pod pick up the missing spots for pace. Easy to install, easy to link up, and seems to be nice and snug on my laces.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Garmin Footpod, June 12, 2010
By Marshall Vaughn (Dayton, OH USA)
I really like this new addition to my Forerunner. It is small and easy to attach under the shoelaces. Even though my treadmill has a mileage counter the footpod allows me to keep track of that mileage with the Garmin Training Center. I wish I had bought it when I bought my Forerunner.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A Must Have for Forerunner 405 Users, May 21, 2010
By J.D. (Michigan)
This foot-pod works perfect for indoor workouts and also helps when you want to extend battery life of the watch. I simply turn off the GPS and use the foot-pod and it seems to use a lot less battery than the GPS work-outs.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Foot Pod works as advertised, December 17, 2009
By sam_6 (Colorado, USA)
I am using this footpod with the Forerunner 305 I purchased at the same time. Pairing the device with the 305 was easy and the 305 immediately detects the pod when I power it up in the vicinity. In the winter many of my runs are on an indoor track or treadmill. Calibration out of the box was pretty good, registering 6.08 miles for what should be a 6.0 mile track run.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Purchased as a gift, March 13, 2011
By KLP (New York, New York)
Bought this as a gift for a friend into fitness. Took a bit of fiddling to get the stride measured properly but once that was done, it has been nothing but smooth sailing. Thinking about buying the Garmin watch and this item, as well, based on my friend's feedback.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Garmin Pedometer, April 21, 2010
By Donna (Wisconsin)
Found the pedometer extremely easy to set up. The most difficult part of using it is remembering to start the Garmin lap.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Garmin foot pod, February 3, 2012
By Quentin Walls
Purchased this to use with my Garmin 305 when running. Works great, and fits in the space for the Nike + sensor. I can't speak to battery life yet, but I've been using it for 3 months so far, three times/week.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Too easy, January 24, 2012
By Jason S. C. Dart
This is a phenomenally easy foot pod to use. It rounds out the suite of devices for me, and is as simple as it gets to both connect and calibrate. Wearing it is literally a snap. I run exclusively in Vibram Five Fingers. I haven't found a method of securing it to my original Bikilas, but with the Bikila LS it's not a problem at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Track Your Steps For The Win, December 2, 2011
By programmer / photographer (Los Angeles, CA)
The Garmin Footpod is an ANT+ protocol fob that fits perfectly inside the Nike+ slot in most Nike running shoes. If you don't have a Nike+ compatible shoe, you can use the included clip to attach it to your shoe laces. It has an internal accelerometer and an ANT+ wireless chip allowing it to transmit your foot strike data to various ANT+ compatible devices. Personally I'm using it with the Digifit App on my iPhone 4S. It works great. The footpod allows me to track my speed and distance when running indoors (treadmill) or where there is no GPS coverage. It also give me information on how many strides per minute I take.

I am really impressed by how accurate it is right out of the box. I was running on the treadmill and my mileage with accurate to within a tenth of a mile. Pretty darn impressive for something I didn't even calibrate.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Light, small, and works well, November 26, 2011
By William R Midden (Bowling Green, OH, US)
I bought this to replace an older Garmin foot pod that was no longer working. This one is much smaller and lighter and works well. It connects to my Forerunner 350 quickly and once calibrated seems to give accurate results.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Former Polar watch user, May 4, 2012
By Bruno santos Oliveira (Jenkintown, PA United States)
This foot pod is excellent. I have had less problems calibrating it than my previous experiences with Polar foot pods. It is also smaller than the Polar. Must have add on if you are planning to run on a treadmill

5.0 out of 5 stars.  good device, April 30, 2012

So far, it's been working properly.
I found it very useful. It allows me to start running before the device gets the gps signal and can avoid differences in mileage when running through tunnels and all.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works fine after understanding cadence is BIKE cadence, March 3, 2012
By takatsu5 (Tokyo, Japan)
I bought the Garmin Foot Pod to use with a Garmin Forerunner 305. I tried to do the pairing inside, but it worked much better going outside to do it. I had no problems. I bought the unit to measure running cadence. I'm an outside runner so the ability to measure inside running distance (where there is no GPS signal) or treadmill distance was not necessary for me. Anyway, on the Garmin Forerunner 305, the data field to use is Cadence, and even though it shows up with an "RPM" label, it is really running cadence. I suspect the bike cadence uses the same data field. After an e-mail to Garmin support, which was promptly replied to, I figured all of this out. Before purchased I really wanted to know about running cadence and the Garmin 305. There was only cursory information about cadence, but it seemed that I should be able to do it with a Forerunner 305, and I was.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  As advertised., February 4, 2012
By C. Ralls (Ohio)
It's a foot pod. It does what a foot pod does. :-) That said, when I got it, my Garmin refused to acknowledge it. I did a search, and it seems these are often delivered with dead batteries since they turn on with movement. I replaced the battery and presto whammo the Garmin (310xt) knew it was there. I have noticed a slight problem when I have the foot pod on my shoe and the ANT+ stick in my PC. The Garmin sometimes gets stuck on the boot screen. As soon as I unplugged the ANT+ stick and did a reboot on the Garmin, everything was fine. The nice thing was the ability to confirm that my treadmill says I'm going slower than my legs say I am. Treadmill says 10 min/mile while foot pod says 9:20 min/mile. Based on feel, I'm more apt to believe the foot pod. It's also a nice to have at an indoor track. It's light so you don't even notice it on your shoe. It was also easy to calibrate.

This Garmin footpod is being returned because it did not work, it would pair, then it would unpair. All other Garman products I have work great, but not this one

1.0 out of 5 stars.  worked OK, now it's erratic, March 26, 2012
By mf6231
I bought this device to help me fine tune my cadence. I have used it almost exclusively outside and use it in conjunction with a Garmin 305. When I first got the foot pod, I was very satisfied. After about 3 months of use (roughly 300 miles) it started giving me erratic readings and strange data logs. The graph line goes from 90 to 40 and back to 90. I love the 305, but wish I'd saved my money on the footpod.
