5.0 out of 5 stars.  Especially on a tour or group ride, this is the difference between a cool fix and cursing loudly, March 25, 2008
By John T. (Astoria, Queens, New York City)
First, a bit of advice: Always carry a hand pump in addition to your CO2 pump. The CO2 pump is really ideal for when hand pumping starts to get difficult as pressure builds in the tire, but not by itself. Some will try to shave grams of weight off their rides by not carrying a multitool and a hand pump amongst other necessities, but take it from a veteran of countless tours and avid rider of decades that it would be better to head out with a CamelBak or handlebar bag full of everything you might need from Clif Bars to band aids, a windbreaker, and a multitool than to be perhaps a whole pound lighter. Besides, there's a saying that is growing in popularity amongst cyclists: If you want to shave weight off your ride, start with the rider. Your ride, your comfort, and your endurance will all be far better if you're better equipped.

A cartridge pump isn't really a necessity, but it's a great item to have because flat tires most often happen in wet weather, or on a group ride or tour when your flat or your friend's flats can hold up a whole group of people or hinder your enjoyment of the day. I usually carry extra cartridges, tubes, and patches to help friends or even strangers who brought nothing. And whether for myself or another rider in need, I much rather get going quickly with the pull of a trigger than be pumping the tire by hand for at least ten minutes, tiring myself out for nothing.

But you will need the handpump to start out the tube, and should use it to quickly do a pumping until it starts to get hard to move the pump, THEN use the CO2 inflator for the hard part. By using the hand pump first, you can inflate the tire fully using only one cartridge instead of two or three.

Also note that--using a mountain bike tire as an example--while the first cartridge will bring the pressure in a mountain bike tire up to perhaps as high as 40 psi, that doesn't mean a second cartridge will give you up to 80 psi. In fact, that second cartridge might only give you another 10 psi, bringing you up to 50 psi--which is fine for a mountain bike ride, but no good for a road ride. Use another cartridge fully, and it will be exponentially less effective. Hense, the hand pump is a necessity to start out the tube and get a good bit of initial air in there, then finish off with one more cartridge.

A road tire will pump up to 100 psi on one cartridge, one shot, on a warm day.

On a cold day, below 40F, the cartridge pump could be almost useless. I've had some luck with keeping the cartridges in a pocket close to my body so that they're warm when I use them, but can't say conclusively that it works. They will, of course, ice up as soon as the gas is released, but warm gas takes up more space--remembering Science 101 from junior high.

Know also that this pump is compatible with every kind of cartridge except 12 gram threadless--which are hard to find except for the air rifle cartridges that contain silicon. But they work best with 16 gram threadless, so you can use handle and all.

The locking switch is a great improvement over my old CO2 pump which didn't have this feature, so that you can still use that bit of air that may be left in a partially used cartridge.

Good luck finding Big Air cartridges in your local bike shop.

Anyway, glad I have this item. It works and has saved me a lot of time and frustration.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Bring a penny, July 29, 2009
By J. Morris (Austin, TX United States)
Reading the bike forums, I saw many recommended using CO2 inflaters at least once at home to work out any usage errors. Seeing there are inexpensive 12oz CO2 cartridges at a local sporting goods store, I bought a 5-pack to practice plus have some spares for my rides.

At home I see the 12oz cartridges are slightly shorter than the 16oz cartridge that came with the inflater. Will they fit snugly enough? Nope! I screwed one in quickly but the CO2 emptied into the plastic sleeve. But there's a trick! If I drop a penny into the sleeve so that it blocks the 12oz cartridge from sliding in too deep, the cartridge will now fit snugly against the pump head. It screwed in fine then. Just remember to screw it in quickly!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Not enough...., May 29, 2007
By Shagui
Very good design, light and usefull, the construction in general shows a very good quality and it`s very easy and store it in your pocket or Camelback.
It accepts threaded and non threaded, 12 or 16 gr. cartidges, that's good,
but you will need at least 2 or 3 12 gr. cartidges to properly inflate a 26 x 1.95 tire.
It works with schrader or presta valves

If you plan to ride in diferent countries and arriving by plane, this is not for you, in order to use it you'll need to find a bike store in your destination to buy the cartidges (You can't travel with them, even in the checked baggage)and some times it`s complicated to find the store or takes a lot of your time.

Instead buy a normal pump, or use the nearest gas station.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works great, June 23, 2008
By Michael A. Simons
I bought this to go along with my Stop & Go tire repair kit. I bought it because it works with the 12g non threaded CO2 cartiges that are redily avaliable at sporting good stores. Seems well made and easy to use. I have tested it useing a non threaded 12g and it works good.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for Topping Off!, April 21, 2010
By ~Ex Nihilo Nihil Fit~ (Anderson, Indiana)
Like others have stated, use your hand pump first, then use the CO2 cartridge to top off what is left. Love the locking feature so there is no accidental discharge in your carry pack. Easy to use, no problems with either types of valves.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A must have, May 3, 2010
By Geoffrey A. Hill (Lake Geneva, Wi)
Had it for less than a week and needed it. Found out it will also work with the shorter co2 cartridges for pellet guns. Much cheaper. It is safe as the filling method is the same as the old Daisy co2 pistols.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent product, May 19, 2011
By Notmy Realname (Los Angeles, CA United States)
I've been using this tool for a few years now, and never had any problems with it. I like the fact that it can take both threaded and threadless cartridges, so I'm free to buy the cheapest cartridges I can find.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great little thing, September 4, 2010
By M. Paganini
This is a great little pump. If you value being able to inflate your tires on the trails quickly and effortlessly, this is the product for you. This little pump has made my life easier countless times. Put a cartridge "backwards" inside it and take another as spare. One CO2 cartridge is enough to fill in a 26" MTB tire, if you don't waste any CO2. I took one star because the threads can be tricky, specially if you're tired and wearing gloves. Other than that, I more than recommend it.

Note: If you're going on some really epic rides, I'd recommend taking a manual pump as well. If you have a buddy (you should), have your buddy take the manual pump and use it if you run out of CO2 cartridges.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Ultraflate awesomeness, March 20, 2011
By Fuzzwatkins (CA)
Had to get this as a back-up for my aging frame-mount pump. I appreciate several features on this inflator. First is the built in mini-pump to get the tube into shape and to help seat the bead on the tires. Once in place, a few shots of CO2 and I'm nearly done. I like the red lock at the rear of the head to minimize/eliminate accidental activation if the unit is in a backpack/pannier. It won't hold a fresh, unopened spare in the chamber like older models, but considering the upgrades that Innovations has made with this one, this one is a winner.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  use care!, October 10, 2011
By R. Bentivegna (Columbus, Ohio USA)
It works but you can over inflate a thin tire (700x23) and blow the tube. Use care and it's best to try this tool at home first!

MUCH MUCH MUCH better than a hand pump.

Bring extra co2 along.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works Perfect, June 23, 2011
By Callie Jones (Marysville, OH United States)
You can buy the 12g cartridges used in Co2 pistols, from any store, and they work PERFECT in this. you can carry this in your bike bag - it fits in the palm of your hand!

You don't need threaded cartridges and you don't need to buy 16 gram special cartridges online. Walmart and all the sporting goods stores sell Co2.

Other reviews say it takes several 12 gram cartridges to fill tires. Huh??? They must be talking about huge mountain bike tires because my 700x23 road tires filled to over 120 psi in a just two quick squeezes of the trigger!! A 12 gram cartridge will only fill one tire but these come in a box of like 30 or 40, so that's not a big deal, and, I am very impressed with this product. It threads onto normal shrader valves and also works directly on the Prest valves. I tried it on both and it works perfect.

I have a huge air compressor and just to save time and effort, I use this to fill my tires. Cartridges are CHEAP and I can grab this out of my bag and charge a tire in a few seconds instead of waiting for my air compressor to get to 120 psi.

You have to be careful with this type of inflater. You can easily over fill your tubes! This isn't the product's fault, it's the user. Give it a quick one or two bursts with the trigger and check the pressure before you inflate it any more. (I never read the directions, it probably tells you this).

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works great, May 4, 2010
By ChicagoCPA (Chicago)
I bike to work every day and use this with these co2 cartridges (30) 16 Gram Threaded CO2 Cartridges.

After a flat, I use the Lezyne Micro Floor Drive HV Pump PV/SV Silver 90psi until I get tired, then empty a co2 cartridge to get it up to 40 or 50 psi (with 26"x2" tires) and top it off when I get home with a full size pump Lezyne CNC Floor Drive Pump

4.0 out of 5 stars.  good and easy to use, August 11, 2011
By S. Riedisser (garland Texas)
This needs a sleeve insert to use the un-threaded 12g cartridge. I couldn't have used this if it wasn't for the old inflater I was replacing... you get one 16g threaded cartridge of CO2, it will accept un-threaded too... but.
So, with the adapter sleeve from the old leaky inflation tool and my surplus of un-threaded 12g cartridges this one worked very well and I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good CO2 Inflator, July 7, 2011
By Bobmon (Minneapolis, MN)
Now that I'm riding two different bikes I wanted to have a second inflator that I could keep stowed in my seatpost bag on the second bike. This inflator seemed like a good purchase and so far I've been happy with it. This will take both threaded and non-threaded CO2 cartridges. If you use threaded cartridges you do not need the lower portion of the inflator which means you can pack even lighter.

So far I've been happy with this inflator. Thankfully I haven't had to use it much, so I can't tell you how it holds up in the long run. But, with a couple of uses under my belt I can tell you it gets the job done. Which when you're on the trail fixing a flat is all you really care about.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works fine with standard pellet gun cartridges, December 24, 2010
By D. Hawkins (Florida)
I haven't actually tried this on a real flat tire, but I did put a pellet gun cartridge in it to see what it would do. As far as I can tell, it works just fine. Mine came with a 16g cartridge and the pellet gun cartridges are 12gms. They are the same length but the 16g is fatter. I don't think that one cartridge is enough for a full motorcycle tire, but it should be enough to get you to the next gas station. Since pellet gun cartridges are so cheap, I plan to throw a couple under the seat just in case.

Just to state the obvious, the cartridge shouldn't be inserted until just before you use it. It leaks a little so it wont last long inserted. The manufacturer could have done a little better with the seal in that respect.

This product is a complete Garbage, first the CO2 doesnt fit right inside the thing, so the cap doesnt go till the end when you twist to close, than I bought more CO2 as Amazon offer to buy together, and the co2 came with a thread on the top to twist and fix on the product, the thing is made in a plastic so weak, that thing broke when i try to twist on it and the pieces of the plastic was all around when the gas almost explode in my hand, lucky didnt go in my eye any plastic piece.. DONT WASTE YOUR TIME BUYING THIS S****!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  great product, November 4, 2011
By tomw (Belmont, CA United States)
I am in a wheelchair and using a regular pump is difficult. Plus being able to carry this around in my backpack allows me to inflate my tires anywhere. I run high pressure tires and typically inflate them to 140 psi. This is a great inflator, the cover around the CO2 cartrige keep your hands from getting burned by the cold and the shcraeder adapter is well made.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Does the job, December 27, 2011
By Ron Lunsford (Everett, WA)
This is my first CO2 inflating system so I don't have anything to compare the quality or ease of use to, but so far, it's perfect. Threaded and non-threaded cartridges seem to work great - but pay attention to screwing in the threaded ones if you go that route. The 'lock' system seems to help hold the air pressure in 'used' cartridges very well. Other than that, one handed operation and quick inflation makes this a winner. Would be nice if it had a system to attach to a frame or handle bar included, but it does fit nicely in my seat bag for now.
