Perfect Fit, June 20, 2010
By Benedictine Oblate (Wichita KS)

I will write another review after appx 3-4 months of use. For me, however, this is a perfect. I am a 64 year old man with serious heart disease. I need regular exercise, but have to stop if I feel my heart stressing too much. The X-Treme Electric Bicycle XB-502 allows me that flexibility. I can pedal or turn on the electric drive and cruise. A perfect fit also was the low price which allowed me to buy it for cash. Also perfect is I need no drivers license, do not have to register it, or insure it. I can ride it on bicycle paths just like a regular bike, or on the street where allowed.

ridden every day for two years, August 22, 2010
By Becannette
|
|
I have ridden this extreme e-bike for 2 years everyday. I love it. It is made in China. It is not perfect, but I have not had much problem with it. I had a flat tire on the back, but I fixed it with never leak or fix-a-flat. I never let the charge get totally dead, so it has always charged. The instructions are about useless, but I did manage to put the rest together by myself and I was a 53 year old 5' tall woman with determination. I really like the storage in the seat and trunk, because I even rode it in the winter(I could not ride it on ice, that would be stupid.) I could load $200.00 worth of groceries on it using recycle bags sat in front of me.

xb-500, July 11, 2010
By azbiker
|
|
we owned an xb-500 for two years. While I loved the power, style and range of it, we had many problems. We had three flats which we had to pay a scooter shop to repair at $50 each. This shop said that a cable ran too close the wheel on the front tire and that it was dangerous to drive. The headlights quit working after a month. I was able fix them by reconnecting a wire, but I had to pull off the dash cover. Then the charger quit working after about 10 months. I'm not sure why, but the blinkers never worked. Please, consider the cost and how you will maintain this bike if you buy one.

Couldn't ask for better, July 10, 2010
By A. Taylor (Phx, Arizona USA)

I am about 5'11 230 pounds, and had some qualms about the potential power in these bikes. I happened to find one that was for sale "Like new/barely used" locally for much less than a new one cost, and jumped on it. I am so happy that I did.
The motor on the bike is easily able to propel me up to its top speed of 20 mph. Granted, with my extra weight (It uses 170 lb rider as its guideline) I lose a few miles on the charge, but thats ok.
2 things to note. 1) The speedometer on mine was saying I was going 40. I had someone pace me and found that it was displaying roughly double the actual speed, so 40=20. 2) THIS IS SO MUCH FUN!

X-treme: worst company I have ever dealt with, April 22, 2011
By Techdude (New Orleans, LA)
|
|
I owned an electric scooter/bicycle shop in California for three years. The web site is still up under the name "Enviro-bike". During this time, I repaired many types of electric scooters and electric bicycles. I closed my shop in 2009, due to a tough economy and the fact that people in southern California only want vehicles that can travel on the freeway. Now I only sell the replacement batteries for electric scooters, electric bicycles and mobility scooters. These are my credentials for writing this review about X-treme scooters and this particular product.
By far, the worst products I ever had the displeasure of trying to repair for customers were from X-Treme. My overall impression of the quality of their products, was that they were built to be thrown away when broken instead of repaired. A few times, I tried to order parts from this company. They were impossible to contact by phone. Messages left were never returned. Once, I ordered a part from their website and received a message that the part was on backorder. After not receiving the part for three weeks, I wrote them about it. I received no reply. I called several times about it and finally contacted a parts person. He told me they never had the part and never would be getting it into stock. Folks, this is an indication to me that most or all of the listings of replacement parts on their website are bogus.
Recently, I got a call from a man in Connecticut who bought the X-treme XB-502 through the Amazon website. Amazon does not sell this product directly. It is sold through X-treme's Amazon store.
The customer in question bought the 502 for his wife, a small woman who weighs just over one hundred pounds. The bike travels less than 16 miles on a full charge over mostly level ground. The top speed is 15 mph, not 20.
He phoned me about replacement batteries for this brand new unit. After many tries, he was unable to contact customer service at the vendors website. He told me he needed 12 volt 10ah batteries, since those are what is specified here in the Amazon product listing. My research on the X-treme site showed me that this bike required 12 ah batteries instead of 10ah. I asked him to open the battery box and inside, he found 12 ah batteries. To Amazon's credit, they will be the ones paying for his replacement batteries, not X-treme.
Additionally, the XB-502 seems to ship with a single-stage 12 volt charger. The user is warned not to charge the batteries for more than eight hours at a time. Every electric vehicle I have ever encountered, regardless of country of manufacture, has shipped with a two or three stage charger. An inexpensive two stage charger charges the batteries to about 90% of their full capacity and then goes into "trickle charge" mode. This means that the charger may be left attached to the batteries overnight or even longer. In this way, a two stage charger protects the battery from overcharging. If you own one of these scooters, I would highly recommend replacing the charger with one from TNC scooters. I have dealt with TNC many times in the past and they are a reputable company.
For those of you who are enjoying your Xtreme-502, I wish you every success and happiness with your purchase. However, I shudder to think of what may happen if you ever need support, replacement parts or repairs for this product.

XB-502 Great so far...(Grand Rapids, MI), September 8, 2010
By gen-x
|
|
I have only had my XB-502 for two weeks now, but it runs great. I would have given it 5 stars but after receiving it (requires assembly) I discovered that the holes drilled in the front headlight plate were drilled too large for the screws provided and that 4 of the holes for the floor mat were not drilled at all. Otherwise, I would have had it assembled in an hour. These things were fairly easily remedied with a drill and buying some larger screws from the hardware store but this worried me as to the craftsmanship of the bike. Two weeks so far and I haven't had any problems, it runs great. I will update this review if anything changes.

electric riding is the future, November 5, 2010
By ryder

great little scooter; runs great on level ground; has to work hard on hills, but will do if not too steep and not too long; two or three hills in a row don't work! but again: level ground, 28 mph for 19 miles per charge; great riding; lights and blinkers are excellent; drivers see you and wait and keep distance - quite different than with a regular bike;

Worst product ever, February 26, 2011
By VP
|
|
After just a few hours of use (30 days of purchase) the rear wheel just broke. The quality of materials is terrible. The product states it comes with 90 days warranty but my attempts to contact the manufacturer have been in vain. No response so far and local dealers don't want to process warranty either. I need Amazon to respond to this as this product was sold by Amazon Store. I need a full refund and trust me, don't buy this product.

Great little scooter to learn on, November 10, 2010
By L. Knight (DC Metro area)
|
|
After months of research, I settled on this scooter for my first scooter experience and my first electric vehicle experience. I expected this to have some limitations, but was willing to put up with these for the price since it was going to be a learning curve to determine what I like/don't like and would want next time when I'm more experienced and ready to spend a little more on a vehicle of this time. This is a sharp looking scooter that is FUN to ride, inexpensive to operate, and its better for the environment than fossil fuel vehicles. People are fascinated by it and ask questions every time I ride it somewhere.
Limitations:
* It does slow down going up steep hills
* When ridden at night with the lights on the battery goes pretty fast
* The mirrors are not a good design. They aren't tall enough and are very hard to adjust, but I did manage to get 1 adjusted well enough to use.
* The turn signal is difficult to turn off without accidently setting it off in the other direction.
* The included charger has to be watched carefully so you don't overcharge it. A smart charger would be a good investment.
Problems with assembly:
* The instructions were limited, but still it wasn't too difficult to figure out.
* The floor mat I received was rubber, not carpet, and that was fine because I didn't want carpet anyway. As others noted, the pegs on the mat didn't line up with the pre-drilled holes on the scooter, so some minor modifcations had to be made.
In the state where I live this scooter does not have to be registered or insured, so that saves a lot of money. I was spending $80 a month on public transit to run short errands and go to the gym. With this scooter, I have cut that down to about $20 on public transit and I save time not having to wait on bus or train so much.
This is a great little scooter for short errands. Love the storage under the seat and didn't end up using the trunk. I do think the price on it should be a little lower as its not of great quality, but it does the job, is fun to ride and is great to learn on.

XB-502 Scooter/e-bike Review, April 13, 2011
By S. Tolle (Colorado, USA)
|
|
So this is a great product for the price. Amazon picked up the shipping for me saving me over one hundred and thirty dollars! Gotta love that. So here's my review broken down into categories:
Build Quality: This product is made in China so you have to expect that it will be cheap in some ways. The plastic is easy to scratch. Some of my parts didn't quite line up during assembly, and the mat on the floor covering the battery pack was obviously designed for a previous version as the tabs that are supposed to pop into holes on the bike that don't line up or the holes are just plain not there. I simply cut off the tabs that didn't have holes and used some industrial Velcro from the local hardware store.
Shipping/Packaging: This is a heavy item, I believe it was like 230lbs. in it's container. UPS isn't going to be dropping this off. A freight carrier has to bring it to you so you'll likely have a different experience then I did. Mine came from ABF initially and then to RAC Transport for the final leg. It arrived 2 days earlier then originally quoted and in great shape. The bike comes sitting in a steal cage surrounded in heavy cardboard. The frame and various other pieces are tin twisted to the cage so they won't move during shipping. All in all I was quite impressed with the packaging. My biggest pet peeve... all of the lights/reflectors/display panels are covered in cellophane to prevent scratching during transport, which is fine, but they placed the cellophane on the lights before mounting them into the various panels and pieces thus preventing you from ever removing all of it as some get's stuck around the edges. Annoying but nothing too major.
Assembly: Okay so the instructions aren't the best piece of writing that I've ever seen but if you read it carefully you shouldn't have a problem. The pedals, mirrors, headlight panel, rear storage box, and front tire ship off the bike and need to be assembled. The handle bars are attached but not mounted. This requires setting them up onto the control shaft and inserting a bolt/washer/nut combo. All in all assembly is basically inserting screws here and there. The pedals just snap on and off. You can put them on or leave them off. You have to take out the battery pack and locate the cable to plug it into the bike with. It was easy enough to find but kinda hard to get out. I did the assembly by myself but you'll find it easier to do with two people, especially for things like setting up the front wheel. Both the front and rear brakes are not really adjusted so you'll need to do that before using the bike. The front brake is a screw in adjustment, like most bike brakes, and the rear is a cable/nut adjustment. FYI, almost all of the parts except the frame are available from X-treme Scooters website.
Use: I bought the XB-502 for use in my small town with a speed limit of 20 MPH. It's perfect for that as it does about 17 or 18 MPH with me on it. I assume that people around the 170 lbs. rating will be closer to 20-21 MPH, I'm around 250 lbs. and it still get's up and going. The speedometer is in KPH with a smaller MPH listing. At least with my bike the speedometer is off by 5-7 MPH, it'll say I'm going 25 MPH when according to GPS I'm doing 17-18. This is the 500 watt version and it could have more torque and get up to 20 faster, but all in all it's quite good. I've tested it on it's stand with the rear wheel in the air and the speedometer only hits the fastest speed that I do while going down a slight grade so I assume that all of the models are governed at the 20 MPH limit and the 700 watt version would just get you up and running faster. The mirrors are kinda small and don't have a huge reach so you'll have to find the right position and then lock them down tight. I'm a large guy so pretty much the left mirror is the only useful one for me, and only when I pull my left arm across my body. Otherwise I just see my shoulders in the mirrors. On a flat surface or a slight grade the XB-502 does a great job. Performance drops significantly on a hill or incline. If you live in an area like San Fran you'll likely want the 600 or 700 watt version. It has storage in the rear box, great for a helmet, and under the seat. I've comfortably placed two full bags of groceries on the bike. It also has a small 'glove box' which you'd be lucky to get a pair of gloves into. It's awesome that this bike has turn signals, but unlike a car, they don't shut off automatically and it's easy to turn on the opposite turn signal when trying to them off.
Battery: I've got quite a few stop signs in my little town so I'm generally riding for a block or two then stopping. Getting up to speed is obviously the most tasking on the motor and battery so the more you have to do that the less life you're likely to get. With lots of stops and starts and being a heavy rider I get around 10-15 miles before the performance drops enough that I want to charge it. A lighter individual that rides for longer stretches with out stopping will likely get closer to the 20-25 miles per charge rating. The battery takes approx. 6-8 hours for a full charge. The charger seems smart and appears to shut off when the charging cycle is done, though the manual does say that you should unplug the bike to avoid overcharging. The manual says to charge it after riding but I tend to ride it until the performance drops enough for me to want to charge it. Never let this battery go fully drained! In order to judge the real charge of your battery take a look at the meter when you first take off from a stop. I've found that it will show a full charge while riding at speed but will show a half charge while taking off from a stop...I'd say that's the real measure. I generally charge when it hits the yellow section under load.
This is a great product for the price. While no motorcycle, this doesn't feel like a bike...especially when you get up to speed. I love the brake lights and turn signals. So far most vehicles have treated me with respect and given me a good amount of space but make sure you're always vigilant as some people will not pay attention and won't see you. Ride defensively! With gas reaching $4/gallon I couldn't be happier with my purchase of the X-treme Scooters XB-502! Have a great ride!!

Great Electric Bike, October 18, 2010
By David
|
|
I Just got my first XB-502, and must say it performs better than spec. I am getting 35-45 miles per charge, and having zero troubles at all. I live in a fairly hilly town in southern OR, most electric bikes get about half there rated speed and distance here, the opposite is true for this one.
My only complaint is that upon receiving this one (ordered from Amazon.com) there were two large fork-lift holes in the box (Thankfully these did not damage the bike) and a large gouge in the rack that the trunk mounts to (this one apears to be caused from rubbing on the steel packing cage).

You get what you pay for, February 27, 2011
By Parrot

|
First of all, its 800 bucks, made in China. Don't expect a Vespa. I got it, and the instructions are 3 sentences for installing the front wheel. Got it for my son, because he drives himself to school. Mind you, he's twelve, but in 9th grade. Amazing kid. Anyway, while I was fixing the seat (which had broken off) the whole front light assembly just went kaput and fell off. Otherwise, it's good. The range is amazing, speed is good too. You'd thing it would go faster, but hey, its so-so overall.

Very happy so far, October 15, 2010
By J

This scooter is as smart as it looks in all the photographs. The first shipment got lost somewhere between Amazon and the shipper, and required a lot of my time to sort out the issue - which resulted in Amazon replacing the item and shipping with another company whose service was excellent. The scooter arrived fully protected in a crate, and took several hours to unpack. This was not so bad though as it was fully protected and in mint condition - just allow some more time for putting it together. Some of the handbook instructions were not very clear - either in the typeface used (small font, smudgy pages - so I went online and printed off new copy) and also in the grammar and clarity of language used (the left brake description suddenly becomes the right brake description which made it all a little confusing). The scooter runs like a charm, although there is a distinctive chain movement sound when it first starts off. This sound seems to diminish as the scooter picks up speed. We are very happy with the purtchase so far.

Great for short distances, May 11, 2011
By arabjakd (Phoenix, Az)

I bought this for commuting to work but I work 15 miles away from home and it is just not convenient for long trips like that. However, it is perfect to take my daughter to the babysitter and school. Also a great way to run to the store for those few items you need. I would recommend this bike to anyone. I have had no problems with it. I did run into an issue where a pothole popped up out of nowhere and the brakes are AMAZING lol. If you live within 5 miles of your work it is great. Now I work from home but it still comes in handy and it beats taking the bus when it is 115 degrees outside. Well worth the money and will be buying a blue one for the hubby as he has an issue with pink and won't ride mine.

I love the scooter, it arived a day early. Then I learned that the "smart charger" one of the most essential parts of USING this scooter was not included in the crate it came in. I called the customer service and got an order put in to have one sent to me only to wait a week and a half for a comfirmation email that my order was put in and that it wouldnt be able to ship untill middle of June....My scooter arived April 25th but I have to wait till what looks like 3rd week in June before I can use it?? Great product, Terrible business ethics and service :(

Save your money!, April 21, 2011

I purchased this bike a month ago from Amazon. Man, am I smart! There was no return address from where it came, though I know it was from in state! I tried contacting the X-treme people, but they have no phone number, and are useless! I spoke with a battery salesman in California yesterday, (Yes, it comes with old, stale batteries!) and will have to buy new batteries! (Many !!!) It is gutless, and there is a reason it comes with pedals! Quality is so poor, the floor mat looks as if it is for another bike, and won't fit! Ok, enough. You have been warned!

Hauls 287 Pound Woman Up Steep Hills Daily!, August 14, 2011
By Dawn L Drangle (Santa Barbara, CA, US)
|
|
I bought this E-Bike from Amazon.com back in November of 2010. I ride it to and from work 5-days a week and on the weekends down to the beach and back both days. I first saw this little gem on craigs list. I fell in love with the bike but the dude was trying to sell a used item for full price! I tried to reason that the warranty was half used so he needed to chop some money off the price but he refused. I waved my cash in his face and walked away. (moron)
So I ordered a brand new one from Amazon.com in PINK! Love it! At the time I purchased this baby it was only $799! I am shocked to see it for sale at the current price of over $1100! But not really surprised at that as I know I got a super deal. Other peddle assist electrics retail for over $2000 and they don't have ANY cargo space!
I put it together myself - I am mechanically inclined - and charged it up. I did expect it to go 25 miles on a charge as advertised but did not take the hills and weight of the rider into account with the first charge so it pooped out on me unexpectedly. Once I got used to the distance it would go and the type of hills it would climb - NO PROBLEM!!! With me on it, and climbing uphill (these are BIG HILLS - in fact it is ALL uphill to my house for 3-5 miles) 7-days a week - it will go a distance of 12 miles on a single charge. I charge it every other day and if I go a little farther on it - there are plenty of places to plug in while I am out paddling on the ocean, have dinner, see a movie, shop!
Speaking of shopping! I have fashioned saddle bags out of two Trader Joe's insulated grocery carriers (the squarish blue ones with the zipper) - I use small caribbeaners to clip the two inside handles together, open the seat trunk, and place the bags on either side with the clipped handles inside the trunk, load the bags, zip them, use another caribbeaner to clip the two outside handles and then close the seat down on them - VOILA! And the little bike hauls my big butt AND both big bags full of groceries up the hill to my house without a single problem! (I'm SURE I look rediculous!)
However, everywhere I go on my little electric gem with my pink helmet, I get smiles and waves and the occassional surprised jump as it makes no noise and I have been accused of sneaking up on people! Folks stop and ask about it, people at work are jealous because I have so much extra money that I am not spending on registration, insurance, gas, upkeep, as well as the extra cash incentive I get from my employer for using alternative transportation. (yes, I am getting PAID to ride this e-bike) People occassionally accuse me of riding illegally in the bike lane as they pass me on thier bicycle - lol! I don't care, I know that we legally go wherever the bicycles can go! I always have a smile on my face when I ride!
Why did I not give it 5 stars you ask? There are several reasons - The tail light burned out and I found that it was nearly impossible to find a replacement anywhere in town - in fact trying to figure out what kind of shop to take it to was a mystery - it's part bike and part scooter! It takes a "56V/10/5W BLT" tail light - which is a dual filiment bulb to work both the tail light and the brake light. I contacted the manufacturer and got a bit of a run around - customer service is NOT GOOD! So I plugged these numbers into the computer and came up with a number of sites in China! Wow! But finally found them on EBAY and bought 5 of them and it's a good thing I did! I have used two of them already!
I got really lucky when I tried to find someone to adjust my brakes - one bike shop owner told me that there is a bike shop in town that handles some really odd bicycles from all over the world. These young lads embraced the idea of taking care of me and it. They are really eco-conscious and willing to help - do a great job and don't charge an arm and a leg!
These are the reasons why it only got 4 stars! I admit that it would be much easier if manufactures would better support their products and I will do a better job of checking out the customer service aspect the next time I purchase ANYTHING.
There seems to be a mentality regarding many foreign based electronic manufacturing companies and that is "if it's broken, buy a new one!" I learned this when I worked for such a company in the customer service/repair department fielding phone calls and speaking with people who's electronic items where kept for MONTHS without ever being repaired. It started out as an American company (Fisher Corp) and was bought by a foreign company. Once that happened, the customer service went into the dumper and we were left without any reasonable explanation for it.
I also know that these manufacturers need to change their ways! The world view of electronic waste is changing and they need to become more responsible for it. One of the best ways to do that is to support the products they make by supplying parts and to provide adequate, friendly, accessible customer service.
I LOVE my e-bike and will ride it until it will no longer move - then I will find a more reliable company and purchase another. (or have my inventer-brother take it apart and fit it with better electronics!)
All in all - I think I have already gotten my money's worth out of it!
Happy Trails!

Great Ride, July 21, 2011

We purchased this from Amazon in May for my wife to commute to and from work 6 miles each way. Fit and finish on the scooter is actually very good considering all the bashing china made scooters are getting on the net (Don't believe all you read some big name scooters from other locations are manufactured in China). Back to this review, my wife loves it it operates just as it should with plenty of power from a 500watt motor, she needs to go over a fairly steep grade on a bridge over a river and has no problems at all. I have ridden it to run to the store and it's a blast to drive. Overall I give it 10 stars excellent rating!

I enjoy this scooter. I use it to go to work and back. Once in awhile I go to the store with it just to pick up few items. I also enjoy going on short drives with it on nice days. This scooter is great and I highly recommend it for anyone.

X-Treme Scooters XB-502 Electric Bicycle, April 22, 2011

So far so good..time will be the telling factor as far as this bike is concerned. Thanks to everyone that has posted their reviews and comments here! I think it's also important we post follow-up reviews at a later date. I've only ridden mine a few miles so far, and pretty much everything I've read in previous reviews was helpful and true. The battery was fully charged in about six hours (I removed from bike while charging)I have one question concering charging battery..Why doe it state in instruction to never charge battery inside your home? I've a few ideas but what wondering what others thought. As far as assembly is concerned..patience is the key..(it takes at least 30 minutes alone just to free the bike from the steel cage it's shipped in)..the manual included isn't as detailed as it could've been,(the pictures are a bit blurry) but it does include 8 steps that should be followed. I'll follow-up later with more details...all I know now is everything works! It will go 25mph, and no more with 170lb. rider. Good luck all!
Followup...April 30, 2011
Everything still working great after five charges, charger goes from red to green when fully charged.
It takes about 6 hours to attain a full charge.
Have used scooter a few times to commute to my workplace which is 14 miles round trip.
With a full charge on the first leg, scooter will go 25-26mph and will go 24-25mph on the way back with some juice still remaining.
So far so good.

Scooter Time!, April 14, 2011

I can't say anything with regard to the packaging and shipment as I did not purchase from Amazon. However, I did use the site for reviews and product information and want others to know my experience.
I live in Cleveland in a rather hilly area the scooter goes pretty quick up to 20 mph. Currently, I have ridden 20 miles on a single charge. Probably could do more, but I don't want to walk it back as the pedals are worthless. Overall, I am satisfied with the performance.
The build of the scooter is solid. It comes from China so don't expect a metal parts like a vespa. The body is made of plastic but has a solid metal frame underneath. The frame seems sturdy enough to carry and lift in and out of a truck. It weights 180 lbs, so you don't want to do any lifting on the plastic.
Bottom line, if you want an inexpensive scooter to zip around this is for you. By regulation, it does not go over 20 mph. I take some steep hills (rt 82 on the south westside) and it drops to about 10, but you would crawl up these hills if you were running. So, if you expect a basic ride that will let you get around town this is it. If you are looking to travel 15+ miles in each direction, get something else or be able to charge it at your destination.

Great as long has it works, October 28, 2011

The product is a good electric Bike. I used it for about a month going six miles back and forth to work. Then the battery no longer held its charge. I then needed to get a replacement battery under warranty replacement. This process was horrendous. They asked the customer to trouble shoot the voltage output of the battery and the charger. I then shipped in the battery pack and charger as instructed. The manufacture then lost my original claim made online as well as several follow up tickets. Being forced to call in I learned the part was on back-order. Several weeks later after another call they stated they missed the shipment.... This caused another delay in my replacement part. After another month they shipped the battery. I then needed to call back to have them ship the Battery connection cable. Over all speaking with the customer service was rather pleasant however the lack of available parts and overall poor shipping I was without a working scooter for several months.

all electric moped companies raised prices about 30 to 50 percent in the last few months , it was a strech at $500 bucks for something made in china like this, they are crazy if they think they will sell for $1000.
You wont have my business until your pricing comes back down . THese ARE NOT FLYING Off the shelves and they have pleanty of supply.
(THere made in china come on.they can import THOUSANDS per month.)
