Great short bike shorts!, November 24, 2010
By Kelli Hughes (Austin, Texas United States)

I love these shorts. First, the price is right. Second, they are a shorter length, which I like as far as tan lines go. ;) Third, they do have leg grippers, which I normally hate, but these aren't super tight. There are just dots of silicone around the leg cuffs instead of a band that goes around, so the fabric can still stretch like the rest of the fabric. The waist is lower cut than most other bike shorts, but it's not TOO low (I'm a mom of 3). The chamois is nice and thick, but it doesn't ride up or press in the wrong places. I can ride for many hours in these shorts without discomfort. They aren't quite as good as my Desoto 400 mile shorts, but they are less than half the price. If you are looking for a decent bike short that isn't as long for a great price, the Sugar Short is the one! I would advise sizing up one size because Pearl Izumi products all run small (consistently across the board -- jerseys, shorts, jackets, everything). I normally wear size small, but I got these in a medium, and they are perfect!

OK for shorter rides, August 1, 2011
By Sarah B

|
These shorts seem to be OK for rides of 30 miles or so, but I wore them day 3 (62 miles) of a 4 day (328 miles total) cycling event and they quickly became uncomfortable. The pad seems a little too thick for my taste and it ended up chafing even with plenty of Chamois Butter.

Great shorts for a beginner!, May 19, 2011

I am new to cycling... Researched for days on the appropriate "wardrobe." I didn't want tan lines just above my knees so I opted for the shorter shorts and I like the inseam on these. Not too short, not too long. Padding is just perfect for my rides. I haven't went further than 25 miles yet... so don't know how they will hold up after that. For me, these shorts are great!

Weird size, March 7, 2011
By Holli

This short wanted to be great really badly. The pad is thick and has nice coverage, the legs don't ride and the lower cut waist is comfy. The sizing is weird though. I have other pearl shorts in a small size and they fit wonderfully. These, however sag in all the wrong places. The butt area is loose and baggy and the pad slides forward. My problem was my receipts were thrown out before I had a chance to try them on and exchange. Order a size smaller and you should be fine.

They are very good cycling shorts
Good Fabrics, good construction, The rubber band inside the legs help to fix it but in a gentel way
The pad is awesome
One think I liked very much is they are "shorts" I mean they reach little upper the hip only, that made them very confortable

Poor fit in the legs, November 8, 2010
By annepearl

The legs were not tight enough, but the band around the legs was really tight creating a very unsightly bulge between the crotch and the band on the inter thigh. I am in extremely good shape and can usually wear anything. I ordered 2 pairs and sent them both back.

Padded Crotch Convert, August 10, 2011
By KAW (Fairfax, VA USA)

I'm no fashionista but I felt like every padded crotch short looked heinous. After several weeks of paddlessness and subsequent soreness, though, I knew I had to do something. Otherwise, my new favorite hobby (biking) would be a thing of the past. So I got these at a GREAT price on Amazon and I'm converted. They are so cute! The length is just right, the waist doesn't pinch, the leg stays put, and I feel so much more "protected." Highly recommend.

My new favorite bike shorts, July 8, 2011
By Kate Cooks the Books (My Kind of Town, Chicago)

I received these the other day and have now commuted to work twice in them and LOVE them. My only other experience with bike shorts are the Terry Bicycles brands which are well-made (as they should be for the price) but really tight around the waist (I usually wear a small but even a medium in those shorts was strangulating me). There is definitely more padding in these than my others so I look more diaper-y when I'm not on the bike. But I really like the lower waist. I was surprised to read some comments about the legs being too tight; I found them to be loose. Maybe there is some inconsistency in the manufacture of these. I will find out I guess as I'm ordering two more pairs.
Weird: I just went back to order two more pairs. Just three days ago I bought these here on Amazon for $34.09 and no shipping because there were Amazon Prime. Today they are $45 + $6.50 shipping, what's up with that?

the pad is too long, July 7, 2011
By tina

This is my first pair of bike shorts and i have mixed feelings about it. i got 2 pairs of iZUMi but different styles both small (i'm 5'4 125lbs). i like the lenght and fit on these sugar shorts. the other pair i had to return because they were too tight. i like the padding in the back but i really don't like it in the front, it seems like it goes way too much too far in front for nothing. ill keep wearing these but i don't think id buy another pair.

Great Shorts, June 26, 2011
By AnaB

I love these shorts! The padding is discrete, and although I still get sore after very long rides, I would hate to know how I would feel without the shorts. I love the shorter fit. While no bike shorts are really flattering - I don't feel funny walking around in these.

Great!, June 22, 2011
By Sally (Cairo, Egypt)

This is an excellent short. Lightweight, perfect fit, and the pad coverage is amazing. I can go cycling for hours and still feel comfortable. The leg fit is really good, but I would recommend you go a size bigger than your usual for extra comfort. I usually go for small, but I got medium.

Perfect Cycle Riding Shorts!!, June 15, 2010
By TXshortie (Houston, TX)
|
|
I'm a casual rider usually going for an hour or so to de-stress and enjoy the great outdoors. These shorts are perfect for casual rides. These shorts never "heat-up" and stay in place. They don't pinch anywhere and you can use them alone or under a pair of short or a skort. They have a breathable and very well padded liner without feeling like you are wearing a diaper. Great price for an awesome pair of cycling shorts.

Top notch review, July 30, 2011
By yesuahskidd

At first, when I saw that it would take about a month to ship my bike shorts I was upset because I thought they wouldn't arrive in time for my cycling class. But, my mood did a complete 360 when it arrived weeks in advance and in mint condition!! I also thought that the shorts would make my but look fat and lumpy because of the padding but when I tried them on everything, to my suprise, was smooth!! If it was possible to give this product ten stars I would.

Pricey shorts that fell short for a horse rider, June 14, 2011
By Elizabeth Harris (Central Florida)
|
|
I bought these shorts not as a biker but as a horse rider that needed a little extra padding in the seat to survive the ridiculously energetic trot of a new horse I started riding. A discussion posted online suggested bike shorts as having padding in the right place for this purpose. Not being a bike rider I had no clue about how these shorts tend to fit and the relative amounts of the padding and such. So I researched diligently and carefully read the product descriptions of many many women's bike shorts, not to mention compared prices too. I finally ended up with these. When I received these, I felt like the product description was misleading. These were described as having light padding--jeez, if that's the case, I'd hate to see heavy padding. The padding was about twice as much as what I wanted. I was also disappointed with the way the padding was bonded to the shorts. Its supposed to be seamless and comfortable but I found the interior ridges and edges of the padding very uncomfortable, it chaffed and irritated. I solved this problem by wearing them inside out so that the smooth outer short surface is next to my skin. Obviously, if you are wearing these as outerwear instead of underwear like I do, this is not an option. The last major issue I had is with the elastic around the leg openings--man oh man--its way too tight! I'm not heavy or overweight by any means but, as a woman, my thighs are the jiggliest part of me. I don't really appreciate my thighs looking like plump sausages and being cinched in uncomfortably at the bottom. Hey Pearl Izumi: what's up with that?? Maybe if I was a tri-athlete with 0% body fat my legs would look lean and mean in these shorts. But I'm not. and they sure don't. In the photo you can't see that at all. And why not? Because the photo was taken on a stiff mannequin, not a real live average person with jiggly thighs. I solved this problem by cutting the elastics off altogether. Which bugged me, since these were fairly pricey, but I had to make them functional. If I had been able to see these and try them on in person, I wouldn't have purchased them. I should have sent them back but I really needed some padding for an upcoming ride.
Yeah, I know, I know, I'm not using them for biking but even if I was I wouldn't want the the sausage thigh thing or the rough yucky padding. I have to admit that they do do the job of keeping me more comfortable in my nether regions while I ride, but by the time I finished modifying them, they sure ain't pretty. And they cost too damn much to boot. Two thumbs down.

great shorts; great quality, September 8, 2011
By Tiff33

I've worn these shorts a few times now and they are awesome. They are of good quality and still feel brand new after a few washes. The cushion is just right. I cycle on a road bike between 30 and 40 miles at a time. They are low cut, but I am short wasted and they fit perfect. Usually the waste comes up too far. I would recommend them. I have a couple other pairs of pearl izumi shorts and have been pleased.

2012 sugar cut is horrible, April 25, 2012
By Bryrland (Pacific NW)
|
|
For years have been buying the sugar XS for my petite wife. Went to stock up with with new shorts only to find the 2012 cut has been redesigned. It is horrible. Fabric on the legs is loose and puckery. You can see this mostly on the photos of the sugar shorts that have the charcoal design panel. The chamois is nothing special either.
Instead we changed to the Elite In-R-Cool XS. More money but a better chamois and the panels are a good (but not great) fit. Oh, we also got the "short cut" w/7" inseam. OOTB these looked so rediculously small we laughed, but they fit a 95lb 5'2" woman just fine. Look great!
Best advise: Pass on the 2012 Sugar Short.

Great fitting shorts!, April 24, 2012
By Ellen Lo (New York, NY)

DISCLAIMER: I have not yet ridden on a bike with these shorts...BUT!
I just got these shorts in the mail yesterday and they fit and look AMAZING. I've tried on a lot of different bike shorts and they all make me look like I stuffed some weird tissues in my pants at awkward spots or like my crotch is sagging far below where it's supposed to be ... basically they're horribly unattractive. I promise to update once I tackle the 5 boro bike ride (woot! 40 miles!) but they are comfy and pretty and score an A++ on the shallow prettiness scale for me!

My Bum says Thank You!, March 26, 2012
By Acey
|
|
These are the first pair of "good" cycling shorts I have purchased (cheap college student), and I love them! The waist is very comfortable, not too tight but they stay in wear they should. I love the fact that they are shorter--better tan lines! Plus, they don't ride up anywhere! There is the perfect amount of padding... I have a very, very boney butt but it wasn't an issue with these shorts...... There is one downside to these shorts though--- the seaming around the padding gets uncomfortable after about 30 miles. After washing them a couple times, it isn't so bad anymore but I definitely wouldn't just throw them on after the first wash and do a 40+ mile ride. You will get all kinds of funny looks.

Good purchase, February 27, 2012

Bought these bike shorts for spin class, and they definitely do the job. This inseam length on regular shorts is fine; however, on these tight-fitting bike shorts it's a little short!

Wonderful addition to spinning class!, November 2, 2011

My wife absolutely loves these shorts. She was very sore after a class without these shorts, and they have made a world of difference with her classes. She has no pain or soreness and is much less fatigued after class.
