ready for marathon, January 8, 2009

I purchased this product because I was looking for something to stow my running gels during the long run. Since there weren't enough pockets in my favorite shorts I purchased new shorts with lots of special pockets everywhere, for gels. But that didn't work too well for me. Then when I ran long distance those new shorts would feel like they would drag downward (when they were loaded down with my favorite gels). So I tightened the draw sting and made a knot, not too good of a solution either. I developed burns and cut like sores where the draw string cut in deep. There had to be a better solution! ..I guessed it was time for the fanny pack..
But I then happened upon this product by accident on Amazon. I wasn't really impressed with the description and thought it must be a gimmick, like so much stuff for sale. Surely most gel users would have one of these if it really worked as described, and I've never noticed any runners with them before. I had never even heard of it. But I just didn't want one of those fanny packs hanging around me while I ran the marathon, and it was coming up quickly. I splurged on several things for this race that I thought "might" actually become useful, this was one of them.
I've always been told to never try anything for the first time during a marathon, but I was desperate for something to put my gels in, and I got my box of goodies from Amazon just before traveling out to this marathon (Memphis).
My "test run" for this product was jumping up and down with the belt loaded with Power bar gels in it. They didn't fall out and the belt seemed secure. Against lingering doubts I decided to use this gadget for the first time during my full marathon. The marathon was great and the FUEL BELT worked perfect; no gels popped lose or came even close to falling out. I can't say that about stowing gels in pockets, they've popped out on me before, and during a race.
This Fuel Belt is a great product that should become FAR more popular with marathoners who use a lot of gels during their race. As a plus, the race number clips work perfectly, and the FUEL BELT logo on the front of the belt is reflective, another plus.
tip-- Its going to take you longer to put the gels into the belt than take them out since it grasps them so tightly. Pulling them free is a two handed operation: grab the top of the gel pack with one hand and the belt right besides it with the other hand, then tug it ouut it takes a second or two, but quicker than digging around in a back pocket. Also, Plan on gelling right before or after the water stop, not at the same time. Last tip, don't try anthing the first time during a marathon. It worked for me.

FuelBelt is great for triathlons!, July 25, 2010
By K. Shea (Glenville, NY USA)

I received a bib belt in my "goodie bag" at a triathlon a few years ago. I had no idea what it was and eventually misplaced it. When I observed competitors putting them on at triathlons last year, I finally realized the advantage of using one. Since I had misplaced my freebie, I bought a FuelBelt. The elastic gel holders are a bonus, although I have never used them. You can position the FuelBelt wherever it (and the bib) will be least obtrusive when cycling and/or running. The biggest advantage is during events where you are removing or adding clothing layers, due to weather and body temperature changes.
BTW: I did eventually find the freebie bib belt and found it was too small for me. I lost the FuelBelt that I purchased last year, so I purchased another. It should be in the gear bag of every bib wearing endurance athlete!

Must have for runners/triathletes, July 19, 2010
By T. Wienckowski

Ever pull your shirt just after your swim and rip your race number off your shirt so you have to re-pin the thing on... so frustrating. With this race belt you no longer have to worry about such nonsense. I used to pin on my race numbers and fool around with that garbage, but no more. This belt makes it super easy and the gel holders are a bonus. I haven't used the gel holders in a race yet, but this made my transitions much easier than before. Well worth it!

Great Item!, September 25, 2009

I bought this a few months back and have used it extensively. It is the perfect item for taking gels with you on the run. It doesn't move around, doesn't bind, and doesn't chafe. I highly recommend this belt.

By manydryriversAZ (Chandler, AZ USA)

I bought this for Mom for her 1st race. No pinning the race number on & leaving holes. It was easily adjusted. It is durable. It stayed in place without twisting around her waist. The bibb was easy to put on the belt. Worked out perfect. Quality product.

basic solution for gel junkies, August 30, 2010
By ilgazk (istanbul / turkey)

If you are running long, or a gel junky like me, you need a solution to carry your gels during the run. If you need more than 3-4 packs, than it will be a problem. So this belt is very simple, easy to wear and good to carry up to 10 packs of gels. It doesn't disturb you while running, and you d'n't even feel it around your waist.

What I expected., October 27, 2011
By JM

Belt fits well I am a size 38-40 waist. It is out all the way but fits fine. Holds gels tight! Almost too tight. A little difficult to get them in place but I think that the elastic will stretch a little over time any way. there are three reflective patches. I bought this to take on my first triathlon and didn't even notice I was wearing it. Good product I would recommend this too.

great!, October 25, 2011

i really like this belt, as it holds several gels and is adjustable. It does ride up a bit, similar to the fuel belt, but i think that has more to do with the way my body is than the belt itself. i have pinned the belt to my shorts and it stays right where i want it, so i've made it work perfectly for me

Simple and does everything you need, October 19, 2011
By Mac

It's pretty simple, and does its just well. I am satisfied with it, it holds the numbers in place well, although I haven't tried running with gels, they seem to be in a good position and would clamp them well. I am very satisfied with it so far.

Good belt with a minor issue, August 16, 2011
By K. Norton (New Jersey)
|
|
The belt has a good build quality and is comfortable. My only beef is the size of the elastic slots for gels. They're so tight, you really have to force it and work the gel around inside the package to get them in. I understand you'd rather it be tough to get them in and out than to have your nutrition fall out while you're running, but I think they were overly cautious. You'll get them set, and they'll stay put. It's just a minor pre-race annoyance that keeps it from a perfect review.

Does exactly what it's supposed to do., August 14, 2011
By Pashinator

I used this belt during the 2011 Ironman 70.3 Lake Stevens. It stayed firmly in place during both the cycling and run portions of the race while holding 6 gel shots and 2 clif blok packages (I still had place for more). This was an extremely efficient method of both carrying my nutrition supplements and holding my number. I combined this with a one piece tri suit, therefore transitions were extremely quick. Very much reccomend this belt. The race would have been impossible without it.

Fuel Belt race belt, June 4, 2011

For anyone who enters running events routinely, this is a must. No more sticking yourself with safety pins trying to attach your race number. Haven't tried the gel pouches yet, but the fit and quality of the belt is wonderful

Seriously Flawed, May 29, 2011
By J. Dueck (University Place, WA)

I purchased the FuelBelt Gel Ready Race Number Belt about a year ago in order to carry gel packs with me during longer training runs and races. It had the added benefit of being able to hold my bib number so I wouldn't have to stick pins through my jackets.
Almost immediately, I noticed the belt would not stay in one spot. It constantly spun around my waist no matter how I loaded the gel packs. The problem persisted with bib number attached.
After a few uses, the elastic on the belt started to lose it's elasticity and after a little over a year of use, is on the verge of being unusable even with the belt fully cinched.
The only thing keeping this product from one-star territory is that it does secure my gel packs without fear of falling out.
This is my second equally disappointing product from FuelBelt (FuelBelt Sahara 22-Ounce Palm Holder with Pocket) and until they improve their quality control, I will not be purchasing any more FuelBelt products.

Holds the gels tightly, just be sure to get them in all the way. It is a bit difficult to do that initially but it's easy to pull them out to use. Light weight, colorful.

Rethink this one..., April 27, 2011
By katmandu

I've have a whole different (and negative) experience with this fuel belt for gels. I used it in the Boston Marathon and it was constantly rotating around on me so that my number was riding on my hips. I also ended up using a safety pin as before the race even started, one of the elastic cords on the belt (that hold the race #) caught on my jacket zipper and tore out the perforated whole that the cord has to go through. Then during the race one of my Honey Stinger gels dropped out of a loop and onto the ground--this also happened in an earlier half-marathon where I stopped to pick it up--but no way in Boston (I would have caused a wreck on the congested course) so I came up short a gel. In examining the belt I found that the stitching on one of the loops has torn and several of the loops are stretched out. This product is good in concept, but poor in design and construction. Think twice before staking any important run on this one.

I have used these belts for years. They hold gels good, they are adjustable and don't ride all over your waist. Comfortable to wear and they hold the race number perfectly.

This product works great for keeping my hands and pockets free during my long runs! I haven't used the race# part yet (and may not since it hangs a little low). I use this for all my long runs now.

solid, November 7, 2010
By MikeH (CO)

Works well, holds gels solidly but easy to get them out when using two hand technique (hold belt with one hand and pull out gel with the other). Wore it for first in a marathon without problems. Only issue, in general, is that larger race numbers hang low. Not a problem, but I'll get more use out of this in triathlon's than just running races.

I've used this belt for triathlons, 10K, 5K and 1/2 marathons. It's comfortable, fully adjustable, fits my GU packs snugly (no slippage), and is very easy to attach my bib to. Would definitely recommend it!

This is the one to get!, October 10, 2010

I was looking for a race number belt to use during the run portion of triathlons. Works great and it holds plenty of gel packets. You have to work them into place before the race, but the belt holds them snugly and they are easy to get to when you want to use them. Excellent product!

Worked for me., October 19, 2011
By Karl Leal (Campbell, CA USA)

I bought this a week before a recent marathon. I did run with it once before the race. I found it held my PowerBar gel packs securely. I won't use the tabs that hold the race number. I prefer to pin my number to my shirt. When I ran with the belt with no shirt this last weekend it did scratch me. I used to put 8 gel packs in a baggie and do my long runs carrying that. I will use the gel belt from now on.

Not worth the storage space., October 29, 2011
By Patrick (Hollywood, USA)

I thought this would help me on a recent triathlon, but when it arrived I was disappointed. The gel holders make it easy to rip your gels just trying to load them, and the squeeze-clips for the race number are very weak. I gave an extra star for the price- admittedly I got what I paid for.
