When I first purchased this lens I hadn't heard much about it for macro shooting. Most of the popularity goes to the old 200mm f/4 and the 105mm. This 60mm often goes unnoticed, and I have no idea why, because it's a spectacular lens. I don't do all that much macro shooting, but I've done more than I planned only due to needing an excuse to use this lens more often. It's 1:1 ratio and close focusing range makes it a perfect suitor for copying images or documents, which is why I bought it to begin with: to photograph documents.

Even wide open it's quite useable...albeit a bit soft, especially along the edges...with some vignetting. But, a stop down rids these minor encumbrances from the field of view completely...and you're left with a very crisp, clear, beautifully rendered image. Color distribution is very life-like...not overly contrasty, or undersaturated. It strikes a nice balance of color and contrast, which is why I find it so useable as a "copier" of documents: It simply renders a scene crystal clear. It's sweet spot is f/5.6 to f/8. Tack sharp corner to corner.

It's a relatively light lens, so hand carrying wherever you need shouldn't ever be a problem. And, it's light weight makes it perfect for getting up close, when a steady hand is needed. Given its light weight, I assume its made mostly of composite plastics...so I wouldn't be open to dropping it or carelessly using it in poor weather...I doubt it's as durable as some of Nikon's heavier, all-metal lenses.

It uses 62mm filter sizes...I use a step-up ring so that I can fit my 77mm filters on it. Auto focus, while not lightning quick, isn't so slow as to make close-up photography painful. The 200mm's auto focus is awfully slow...and it has a nasty tendency to hunt around a good bit, especially in low light. The 60mm doesn't hunt nearly as much in my experience, even in low light.

This lens could be priced at twice it's current rate and I wouldn't bat an eye. It's that good. I've had it about a year now, and I have yet to be disappointed by its performance.
