Great for DIY-PERIO finishing and detail work, November 14, 2013

As a dedicated DIY-PERIO I most certainly do own the Micro-Mini Gracey 1/2 (straight curette), 11/12 (mesials) and the 13/14 (distals). Couldn't be happier with these curettes, for Graceys. In particular these curettes are very long and thin, with a small delicate blade that has a permanently sharp Everedge, that enables them to penetrate to the deepest levels of the periodontium, between tooth, gum, bone and calculus, that are virtually impossible to reach with any other curette.
In fact the Micro-Minis are the thinnest curettes on the market. So indeed they "go where no other curette will go." Which is super-important for any rehab work. Since every last piece of calculus and dead periodontal membrane has to be debrided to ever hope for the "periodontally hopeless tooth" to be able to recover its health and survive. And hopefully with an intact nerve too.
The Gracey configuration then provides great textural dexterity and manipulation around obstacles and corners and into the deep reaches. While the small size and sharpness of the Micro-Mini Everedge blade then provide the focus, articulation and grip on the target calculus to get enough force to dislodge the calculus without unnecessary slippage or skipping. The fat handle also helps provide good manual dexterity.
Technically these are finishing curettes, not to be used against large calculus constructions. Which is true. And they should never be attempted as such. Rather fatter more cumbersome curettes should be used until the finishing steps. Then engage the Micro-Minis. But where "no other curette will go" they will engage the target and will win, eventually.
In addition these curettes also make for great furcation curettes and for fine rehab type debridement, including detrenching the bone, debriding dead periodontal membrane and smoothing dead cementum. Plus they are also great for the so-called "deep plunge" to help liberate periodontal abscesses or to fish around in the vicinity of the apex of the tooth and other vital areas. In particular here the Gracey offset edge is only sharp when engaged. So there is less risk of damaging any vitals.
In short there is no better "closer" to rehab seriously damaged periodontally infected teeth than the Micro-Minis. And anyone who is serious about rehab will own a set. But will certainly also own additional stronger more durable curettes too, including both Graceys and universals. Since the Micro-Minis are only to be used for the most delicate debridement.
Oh... and also these curettes can be used instead of the cheap drugstore curettes for anyone who just wants to do light "touch up" work in between regular dental visits. Or who wants to leave any "heavy lifting" to their hygienist and only has light to moderate periodontal disease.
