Less abrasive than other whitening toothpastes and seems to do the trick. Would that I could find it in most stores!

OK, but I Miss the Original Formula, January 25, 2017

I have used Tom’s of Maine toothpaste for over a decade. Tom's was a small company, employing fewer than two hundred people. It was founded in 1970 but then was purchased by Colgate in 2006. Colgate left the products alone for several years, but then made changes.
The original toothpaste formula was more gritty than smooth. The peppermint flavor was pure and sharp. Colgate has kept the peppermint, but added a mixture of “natural flavors.” They have also added sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) to the mix. SLS is the subject of debate. The formula is no longer like the original, but I have continued to use it.
The “luminous” whitening toothpaste contains no sugar, sweeteners, or artificial flavoring to its credit. However, it does contain SLS. The claim is that it is made from natural products. Does that make it natural? It is a matter of opinion. There is also fluoride added. I am ok with this since my water at home comes from a well, presumably without fluoride. There is also titanium dioxide, a whitener.
It is too soon to tell whether my teeth will be whiter as a result of using this toothpaste. At least, this version of Tom’s is much better than most of the Colgate products, which may contain artificial colors, flavors. and chemicals like propylene glycol, a form of antifreeze. I will continue to use this toothpaste and other Tom’s products, but I really miss the original formula.
