4.0 out of 5 stars.  wide range of materials, February 21, 2008
By W Boudville (Terra, Sol 3)
Bhat gives a comprehensive description of the different types of materials that are surgically inserted into the body. Starting with the basics; namely the biological tolerance of the body to various implanted metals. These metals might form part or most of prostheses. Then there are numerous ceramics. Most important of which could be alumina, which can be inert even after years [decades] inside the body. It is highly corrosion and wear resistant, and strong. Hence its use in hip implants, as a load bearing structure.

The book also devotes extensive space to polymers, both synthetic and biopolymers. Another class of "natural" implants are tissue grafts. Here, issues of rejection by the immune system figure prominently.

Readers who need implants might consult this book as good background. As a broad second opinion on what their surgeons propose.

There is no discussion of nanostructure materials. These still lie in the future.
