Thank you, Feiffer, August 9, 2005

Most kids books fall into that mediocre range. Good enough to entertain children when given a decent reading by an adult, but nothing that sticks with you.
I suspect all parents have this moment when they are reading books to their kids. The point where they think, "I could write kids books." And, in fact, most of us could, and they would be no worse than most of what's out there. Look at the books churned out by celebrities, for example. They're not great, but not much off the mark of everything else out there.
But then you have the exceptions. The best kids books have an illusion of simplicity, but have a special magical quality. Jules Feiffer, with "Bark, George," has produced a book that rises above the rest. It's an effortless read which you can fly through at a rapid pace. But that simplicity is deceptive. Much in the spirit of Charles Shultz, Feiffer is able to draw crude, minimalist figures that manage to have depth, spunk, and charm.
First there is the dog saying "meow," and "oink-oink" and "moo." When the exasperated mother dog takes her son to the vet, things get more surreal, and more hilarious. The vet, bespectacled and pony-tailed, wearing the classic white coat, gloves up and begins to remove animals from the "deep down inside of George." Don't worry, he goes the upper GI route, not from below. The expressions on everyone's face, including the animals being extracted, is brilliant and hilarious. The illustration of the mother dog kissing the vet is amusing but very touching as well.
This is the most I've enjoyed Feiffer since he animated the transcripts of the Chicago Eight trial.
This book has been a huge hit in my house. I give myself partial credit as well, since I think my high energy reading really adds to the effect. But the real kudos go to the Feiffster, who taps into a child's imagination with the skills of a Schultz, Seuss, or Silverstein.

My reputation as the "uncle with the knack for picking good children's books" remains intact after I sent this book to a not-quite-two-year-old nephew. Not only did it entertain him, but it caused his older brother to laugh out loud as well. Thanks for the lead on this smart, deceptively simple, entertaining book!

Not for the 4 to 8 year old category, December 23, 1999

I purchased this book for my son. After reading the customer reviews, I thought it was a pretty safe purchase. But after receiving it, we quickly found that the story was to easy to figure out and could not keep my son focused. It is a simple story meant to be read to two year olds. I also found the animation sloppy. Others may find it entertaining, it is all a matter of personal tastes. But I do not feel this book belongs in the catagory of 4 to 8 year olds. It is to short and not challenging enough for this age group.

Silly Dog!, November 25, 2000
By J. Scharp (Michigan)
|
|
I got this book for my son, who is 2 years old. He requests it eagerly, and enjoys saying "silly DOG" each time George belts out the wrong sound. This is the type of kids book that will have your child repeating with you, and adding things on his own interactively. It is a fun book with cute illustrations and punchline. As a mom who loves to read fun books, I recommend it for all parents with young kids.

This is a must buy for any family library. If you have ever had a puppy or are wanting one, this book shows how mother and son are working to teach George to bark. What mother and son go through is absolutely hillarious. Don't be surprised if this book is read over and over again!

Listen to What George has to Say....., July 22, 2002
By Roz Levine
|
|
Mother dog is beside herself. Her puppy, George, just can't seem to bark like a dog. "Bark, George." George went: "Meow." As mother asks him to try again and again, he quacks like a duck, oinks like a pig, and moos like a cow, but just can't seem to bark like the dog he is. "George's mother took George to the vet." The vet studied the problem and this time when George meowed, the vet "reached deep down inside of George..." and to everyone's surprise, pulled out a cat, then a duck, a pig, and finally "deep, deep, deep, deep, deep, deep, deep, deep, deep, deep, deep down inside George..." a cow. Now, George can bark "arf", or can he..... Jules Feiffer's brief text doesn't waste a single word, and is complemented by his simple and bold, cartoon-like illustrations that captivate with their marvelous facial expressions. Together word and art create an engaging treasure that will charm and delight preschoolers as young as two. With a hilarious, surprise ending that's sure to tickle your funny bone, Bark, George is a timeless classic, to read and share with friends and family now, and future generations in the years to come.

I loved this book. My sister and I laughed our heads off. The detail in each illustration is wonderful (check out George's mother's reaction when the vet is working on George). Then I gave the book to my brother George, who of course thought it was great and will be reading it to his children. Maybe I'll get a copy for my father George!

My two year old son loves this book and I love reading it to him. He really gets a kick out of George's mom and all her expresions. When I read this book, my son insists that I grit my teeth and put my hand on my head and say "No George" just like George's mom. It's a wonderful book. A must for every 2-3 year old that occassionally has a frustrated mom.

great book for toddlers, October 21, 2002
By Meghan McCarthy (NY)
|
|
George's mother wants her son (a dog) to bark. Problem is, he'd rather meow, quack, or oink. Seemingly at wits end, George's mother brings him to the vet. What a surprise when the vet pulls out an array of animals--a duck, pig, and even a cow. So that's why George couldn't bark, right? The surprise ending will most certainly get kids giggling.
The text is short and repetitive, perfect for a read-aloud. Feiffer's illustrations are expressive and leap off the page with abounding energy.
The book's only flaw is that of its cover. It's far less interesting than anything found inside. I guess that old saying holds true--don't judge a book by its cover. This one's a winner!

A funny story your kids will love!, July 18, 2001
By A Customer
|
|
So there's a misuse of words in the story...big deal. I don't feel that my daughter is going to use poor English just because one (very cute) book does. It's actually a good opportunity to teach her the correct way to use the words! The illustrations are adorable and I just love the expressions on George's mom's face when he can't spit out a proper "Arf." When she takes him to the vet to find out the problem, my daughter cracks up every time he pulls a different animal out of George's tummy. There's even a twist at the end that I didn't expect. If you like to read fun books to your kids and don't take them all too seriously, then you should love this book!

Cute story but . . ., June 30, 1999
By A Customer
|
|
The story is really cute, and the illustrations are funny even of mother dog's expressions of concern. It has an ending I didn't expect and it was not predictable; a pleasant surprise. But,why would anyone write an amusing story like this one and deliberately misuse the English language? George and mother misuse the words "go" and "went" throughout the book. George "went" nine times in the book and really didn't go anywhere; he just sat there trying to bark. The usage of the word "go" by the mother is equally disturbing. For example the mother dog says: "Cats go meow" and "Dogs go arf." What ever happened to the words "said" or even better "replied"? The English language takes a beating in everyday usage. At least the written word for children should be correct. I'm sure my grandchildren will find this book funny for it is a happy story. I would not have purchased this book had I known of the English faux pas.

Not George the Monkey, but George the Puppy . . ., October 31, 2006
By shanachie_shadowfax (Discworld)
|
|
You'd think a mother dog would have no trouble teaching her pup how to bark. But in this hilarious picture book, George's mother doesn't have it so easy. She tells George, the puppy, to bark, and he meows, quacks, oinks and moos, but doesn't go "arf". Something is terribly wrong--and it makes for a delightfully funny book by Jules Feiffer.
If you're a parent and you haven't come across this gem of a book yet, I recommend you take a look at it. Jules Feiffer started his career drawing cartoons and comic strips and it shows in his work here. It might seem strange to call a book with such simply drawn pictures and hilarious text elegant, but it's true. Each page has only foreground characters, the background is a single soft color that highlights the characters and their comic expressions as George's predicament gets worse and worse. The drawings are simple line drawings, but they convey exactly what the author wants them to, coming across as finished comic art. Each scene spreads over two pages to create a complete layout of the story at that moment. Usually the mother dog is on one side telling George to bark, while George responds with a regular menagerie of sounds on the other side. Sometimes the two page spread is crossed over for one single drawing, such as when the vet pulls a cow out of little George's mouth. The images are drawn large enough that even a crowd full of children can interpret what's happening on the page. The text is simple, repetative and funny as all get-out. It's a perfect read aloud story for youngsters and will give them the opportunity to respond to the story, telling the reader that a cat goes meow, not a puppy, and so forth.
From personal experience, the humor in this book is probably best with a kindergarten age group, but preschoolers who might not get the humor in it's entirety will still enjoy the story and the animal sounds. Adults will probably get a kick out of the story too: I've had more than one parent break into chuckles while I'm reading this to their children. Feiffer has the artistry and the knowledge to create an excellent book for children and has lived up to those skills. I only hope he can continue the trend with more delightful reads. For those who enjoy Bark, George, I'd also recommend Hi Pizza Man! by Virginia Walter (it's out of print but well worth finding) as well as Ella Sarah Gets Dressed by Margaret Chodos-Irvine.
^_^ Happy Reading! Shanshad

Read it again and again!, December 24, 2002
By cliopatra (Florida)

My 6-year-old sister brought this book home from her school library at Thanksgiving and read it to me at least 20 times over the course of a week. The words are easy for her to read, like "vet" instead of "veterinarian" (she's not quite there yet). The use of "go" instead of "say" is common language among children and even adults (I even say it sometimes, and I'm over the age of 21!). This book is charming, engaging, and the perfect book for either a young child being read to by an adult, or a new reader looking for an exciting story. My sister loves to make the animal noises and express her shock and delight when the vet pulls out assorted animals. She even has her own theory about why George says "hello" in the end. I'm buying this for her for her own library.

Sitting on the floor of a dusty bookstore, my twin sons were mesmerized by the clerk reading this book. They love the various animal sounds and figuring out what animal SHOULD be making that noise. Reading it together ensures giggles and discussion . . . and a springboard into other literary activities such as pointing to various stuffed animals and figuring out "what is inside them?" It is both a must read and a learning experience all between two covers.

The worst book I have purchased for my child, June 10, 2001
By ROBERT J DUNCAN (dallas, tx)

I have a difficult time reading this to my child because the english is so poor. ex: George's mother says to him "Ducks go quack-quack. Dogs go arf. Now bark George. George went: oink". The use of "go" instead of say and "went" instead of said drives me crazy. I don't want my child to grow up thinking this is correct. The book also makes reference to George seeing a "vet" instead of a veterinarian or a doctor. I will have to put this one away before my daughter begins to read on her own!

A great read-aloud book for your toddler., September 25, 2001
By A Customer
|
|
I love reading this book aloud to my now 14 month old daughter because it's alot of fun. She's owned it since she was 9 months, and, at first, would simply listen to me read. Now she points, tries to make animal noises, and has me read it several times in a row. It is currently one of her favorites. I would put it in the same category as other predictable/cumulative books such as "Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?," "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," "If You Give a Mouse A Cookie," and "Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom." Unlike these books, however, there is more street language than the ritualized formal speech of these other books. Some other reviewers are critical of the use of "go" instead of "say" and "went" instead of "said." I'm not convinced that it is not proper to refer to animals making their respective noises in this manner. Visually, the use of color, the sharp outlines, simple backgrounds and humor (check out the vet's ponytail)are outstanding. I would recommend this as a great read-aloud story.

Spoken word(s), July 20, 2004
By Ramseelbird (Manhattan, NY)

There are books that are fun to read aloud and there are books that are REALLY fun to read aloud. Author/illustrator Jules Feiffer is nothing if not an expert on the focused yet misleadingly simple picture book. Accompanying such a text with matching focused yet misleadingly simple illustrations, "Bark, George" is just one of those books that kids love in a twisted kind of way. Similar to the works of Shel Silverstein, the story follows one pup's crazy way of expressing himself.
George's mother is patient, but only up to a point. She is attempting to get George, her puppy, to speak. But the first time she asks him he replies, "Meow". The second time he does a quick "Quack-quack" and the third time it's a simple "Oink". By the time George gets to "Moo", his mother has had it. She takes him immediately to the doctor and when George says, "Meow", the doctor reaches into George's mouth and pulls out a cat. Next, he takes out a duck, followed by a pig, and finally (the doctor needs his longest latex glove for this one) a gigantic cow. To the joy of all, George immediately says "Arf" when asked to speak (though how the doctor knew not to pull out another dog from George's mouth we'll never know). Thrilled to death, his mother kisses everyone and takes George out into the street to show him off. The place is full of people, and George's mom instructs, "Bark, George". The final picture is of a small George saying, politely, "Hello".
Now the correct reading of this book to young 'uns depends on a lot of things. First of all, you need to be able to do each voice George produces appropriately. Next, you need to be able to play up the surprise ending in a successful way. What I love about this book is that most kids will get the gag at the end. They'll realize what it means when George says, "Hello". In a way, this book teaches kids how to get jokes. Priceless information too rarely given! Finally, this book is not for squeamish adults. I can see plenty of grown-ups freakin' out over the ramifications of George's internal contents. They'll see this story as a tale of a ravenous dog that will eat anything from pigs to people. Sensible readers won't see it that way, but I have to tell you to watch out for those parents that would protect their children against potentially hungry pups (I should point out that it's never clear in the story HOW George acquires all those animals down his throat).
It's good to have a sturdy collection of reliable read-aloud picture books to reference when you need them. Definitely consider adding "Bark, George" to such recent classics as "Duck on a Bike" and "Click, Clack, Moo" for your preschool speaking engagements. It is a charming story of one small pup that is far more than he initially seems.

Simply WONDERFUL!!, March 9, 2004

I read a review of this book that intrigued me enough to buy it.... 6 years ago! I read it to my son when he was little and it quickly became his favorite. He would even tell people all about George the "goofy" dog. Eventually he moved on to other books over the years. Then, shortly after his baby sister arrived, I quietly watched unnoticed as he brought out the book and read it to her! He told me later that he had "shared" the book with his sister. He was so thrilled to be able to pass on the fun of the animal sounds. I would recommend this book to all parents! It will be a much loved book that your child won't soon forget!

At first glance, the subtle illustrations make this an easy book to overlook. But this deceptively simple tale is worth a second peek. I have read this sweet, funny story to several classes ranging from preschool to second grade with great success. In fact, the students so enjoy George's attempts to bark for his vet that they often ask me to read it again.

Cute and funny book!, July 17, 2010
By Connie (NYC)
|
|
This is a cute book about a dog, George, who won't bark. He moos, he quacks, he meows - he doesn't bark! (Sometimes when reading this book I go "Why can't his mom just let it drop? Who cares what he does!", but I'm reading too much into it then, and it's worth it to ignore this just to get to the punch line!) So he goes to the vet and... oh, I can't spoil the punchline. Let's just say your average four year old will die laughing.
Now, a special note to those people who think "go" can't ever mean "say":
You're ignorant, and I will enlighten you. Go to your bookcase and pull off your dictionary. I assume you do HAVE a dictionary. I have several... though alas, they're all out of date, forcing me to use Merriam-Webster online.
Now, open the dictionary to the entry for the word "go". If you don't want to bother pulling the book off your shelf, here's the link: merriam-webster. com/dictionary/go (take out the space, please!)
Keep reading, keep reading - wow, the word "go" has a lot of associated meanings, doesn't it! This is because of metonymy, of course - keep reading, turn the page, we're now at the transitive uses. Aha! Go, as a transitive verb, sense 7a (to cause a characteristic sound to occur) and 7b (to say).
You might not like it, but I don't like people saying "awful" to mean anything other than "full of awe" or "artificial" to mean anything other "made with artistic skill", or "amusing" to mean anything other than "astonishing". This is how Shakespeare spoke, and it's good enough for me! Why isn't it good enough for you?
(Aw, I'm being facetious. Language changes, guys! Get used to it. If your kid can't understand "go" to mean "say", they're going to be left out of a LOT of conversations!)

This book is chosen by both our 4 yr old and our almost-2 yr old *all the time* for reading (and we have 4 shelves of kids books). The 4 yr old laughs with the "No, no -- dogs don't say 'quack'" and the 2 yr old loves any book with animal sounds -- whether they are the correct ones for the animal or not. Fun reading and the twists still make us laugh each time we read it.

I love this book! If you do not have it you need it whether it is for you personally, your child or your classroom library. It is a great book about exceptance and introduces different animals throughout the book. I use it in my classroom to teach inferences and how the author shows us what the characters are feeling by illustrations. You can do alot with it. THe book was in good shape and I am so excited to add it to my collection! Happy reading!

This book is so much fun for both children and adults. Both the story and illustrations are great! Also, it is a very easy book for pre-readers to memorize, and they have so much fun with it. My 4 1/2 granddaughter and 3 1/2 year old grandson both loved it!

This book was loved by my three nephews (one is 4 and the twins are 2). I was already their favourite aunt but I think I actually moved up a few notches on the scale with this one.
On my one week stay with my sister, I read this book to my nephews at least once per day. The four year-old liked it so much that we performed a show with puppets for the whole family based on this book.

Quirky fun for the young, October 27, 2007
By knit goddess (Denver)

"Bark, George" is typical Silverstein, innocuous on the surface, somewhat subversive within the depths. The child I read it to loves it, and has it memorized, and the adults find the unexpected ending very amusing. A bit of all right...

Excellent Early Childhood Literature, June 9, 2007
By Teacher Grandma (Casper, WY United States)
|
|
Bark George is a wonderful book. It incorporates animals, their sounds, a mother's dilema and love, and mystery/humor into a child's book. It is short, but wonderful! My 20 month old grandson wants it read to him over and over again. He loves to put on the "longest latex glove" like the veterinarian does in the book. A plus for children's literature...through 2nd grade.

What a Fun Read Aloud, October 17, 2006
By Diana (Salem, Oregon)
|
|
My students love this book. It is pure fun all the way throught. It makes a great read aloud and the children love to help read the words deep on each page as the vet has to reach deeper into George to remove the unwanted animal. We always get a great laugh out of the mothers expressions and relating it to the children's mothers always brings the house down with laughter. I don't think in all the times I have read this book to my students has anyone ever guess the ending. Just a delightful book from beginning to end.

No, George...pigs go "oink"!, March 5, 2006
By metimoteo (the centennial state)
|
|
This is among my most beloved children's books and one that I eagerly share with children and parents time and again. The text and the illustrations could hardly be simpler, yet they are so well imagined and so well realized by Jules Feiffer that one may take for granted his skill in creating this masterpiece. I am partial to this book because it must be read aloud to be fully enjoyed--and not simply read but acted, as one might act out role in a play. I put my best foot forward every time I read this book to my audiences at the Children's Museum or for various schools because I know that the mannerisms and actions I employ to complement the text will always elicit laughter from the children. This is a contemporary classic and a book that deserves a treasured place in your child's library!

Funny Book..., February 7, 2006
By K. Weirich (Pennsylvania)
|
|
I borrowed this book from the library awhile ago for my daughter and think it is hilarious. My husband and I both thought it was a cute, amusing story that tells a cute story about a dog who can't quite bark. The facial expressions on the mommy dog and vet are so funny. When I borrowed the book, my daughter was young (under a year) so she didn't really understand yet, but now she's 19 months so I'm going to get it again and see how it goes over now. This book is definitely one that the whole family will enjoy.

Our toddler LOVES this book, October 10, 2004
By H. Price (Oregon)
|
|
This is a clever book that we enjoy reading. Our toddler especially loves the last page. If your child likes dogs, this one's a must. My only complaint is the word "George" is used entirely too much, so I'll substitue in "his" where appropriate.

Delightful, December 7, 2003
By Britney (USA)
|

This is the story of a puppy that can't seem to bark - instead he makes other animal noises. His smart mother takes him to the vet who knows just how to correct the problem. This book makes for a quick read if you can stop giggling. The illustrations of the vet's expressions are very funny. The ending is a delightful surprise.

When I read it to my 3 year old granddaughter, she kept asking me to reread it. It amused her and made her laugh and she had it memorized by the second day. Lots of fun, December 20, 2001
By Dave Mulligan (Santa Cruz, CA United States)

This book is great fun to read with your kids. Ours loved making the animal noises. Plus, there's enough interest in the pictures to keep adults amused. I must have read this book aloud 200 times, & I still laugh at the look on George's face when the vet gets out "his very longest latex gloves". Highly recommended.

My daughter loves this book..., November 12, 2001
By "hjshorter" (Rockville, Maryland)

and so do I! She has memorized it and giggles hysterically whenever George makes an inappropriate noise. I am a longtime admirer of Jules Fieffer and was so happy to discover that he has written children's books. I am so glad that the grammar police didn't prevent me from buying it simply because George "goes" quack instead of "says" quack. I'm not sure I would agree that an animal "says" anything, although George's mother seems to speak English correctly.

My 10-month-old son loves it!, May 27, 2000
By Beth Bryant Miller (Texas)
|
|
I love to read, so I was thrilled when my son started to show an interest in books -- tearing them and turning the pages, that is. Until we got Bark, George. He loves this book! If he sees the cover, it has to be read and it has to be read many times! I have read this book six times in one day before. He sits nicely and listens -- almost impossible for a toddler! We have bought two more copies of this book -- one to keep for him for when he gets older and one for a future sibling!

Cute book, October 1, 2009
By rebcat (Virginia)
|
|
This is a cute story, I have a two and a three-year-old and my older one thinks this book is hilarious. I agree with the other reviewers who criticized the grammar, but I simply correct the words when I read it aloud. It's not really a fantastic beginning reader book anyway, so changing "go" to "say" and "went" to "said" isn't a big deal for me.

Fun to read out loud., January 26, 2012
By Heidi Grange (Logan, UT United States)
|
|
This is delightful book, perfect for sharing with preschoolers or kindergartners. I have found that it inevitably elicits giggles. I enjoy reading this book with great emotion, shock, frustration, and a surprising twist at the end. I find that I like to pause before turning that final page. The illustrations are deceptively simple yet convey every emotion. This book reminds me of Mo Willem's Elephant and Piggie and Pigeon books. How these authors convey so much in so few words and simple lines amazes me. I highly recommend this book, it's great for read-a-loud time.

A Delightful Book That All Of My Children Love!, September 16, 2011
By kelly (United States)
|
|
This is such a fun, wonderful book to read. I have children of several different ages [3,4,6,8,10] who all love this book. The 3 year old brings it to me constantly to read and all of the other kids gather around because they love it too. As I read, you can hear the kids all making whatever noise George is making and giggling their heads off. I guess you have to haved a sense of humor to appreciate this book [as evidenced by the mystifying negative reviews!], but we think it is adorable. This is one of the most read books in our home [and we have hundreds of books here... ;) ].

My 14 month old loves this book! He already understands the humor in it and laughs when George meows, moos, etc. There is even humor added in for the parents (the long latex glove). I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with a toddler or preschool-aged child...When we read this story, we replace the "goes"'s and the "went"'s with says and said. By the time my son is old to read for himself and catch on to what we're doing, he'll have outgrown this book.

Great book. I'm 48, like dogs, and this is about what my dog is like. By the way, "go" is correct english, meaning "say", and of course, "went" is past of "go." True, it is not "sophisticated," but this is a child's book.
