Spencer has too many toys! His father trips over them, his mother falls over them, and the house is overflowing with junk. Now its time to give some of the mountain of goodies away, but Spencer finds it hard. In the end, he fills a box, but decides the one toy he can't part with is the box!

Brought me to tears. Amazing book., December 21, 2008
By Greenpalm (McKinney, Texas USA)

I found this book on a store shelf while I was doing my Christmas shopping for my kids. I stood there in the aisle, totally overwhelmed and exhausted. I didn't even want to buy them one more single item and take it home. I was actually wishing I could just skip the Christmas shopping all together. We had passed a "Toys For Tots" barrel a few days earlier and my oldest looked into it covetously and said, "What lucky kids." I whipped around and got down on his level fast enough to make his head spin, "Those kids are NOT lucky!" I realized right then that we needed to learn a thing or two at our house. Imagine my emotions when I happened upon this literary treasure. As I turned page after page, my eyes welled up and I knew I had to have a copy. It seriously made me cry. I have stepped on jacks and Legos. I have tripped on race tracks while trying to carry a load of laundry down the hall. So, given that I feel like David Shannon came to my house and peeked in my windows, not to mention, has been reading my mind, here's what happened: This morning (Sunday the 21st) There was a note from Santa and this book. What a surprise! Santa came by several days early to our place! He left this book and three empty boxes (one for each child) and in his note, Santa gave clear instructions that the boxes were to be filled with "fun stuff." He added that that Mama and Daddy would help the kids find a worthy donation location. (oh boy, would we!) I woke up this morning to giggles and grins as the oldest read this hilarious book aloud to the other two. They LOVED it! I had no trouble getting them to fill up those boxes Santa brought by, and Dad hauled it all to the homeless shelter this afternoon. A glorious Christmas book, and a perfect lesson in charity and generosity. I know the book is meant to be an exaggeration, but...aaack!! My house is really like that!! The humor of the story, just helps to make the lesson stick. My favorite part is the sad warbling egg shaped pirate. So true!! Santa is so wise, and so is David Shannon.

Too Many Toys, September 23, 2008
By Mr. B (Ogden, Utah)

David Shannon is amazing! I am a Librarian for an elementary school and his books are always among the favorites, and "Too Many Toys" is no different. He has a great way of relating to children. All children relate to this story because we all tend to hang on to things that don't even work just for the sentimentality of it. The art work is delightful (as always), and the combination of the story and the pictures just works so wonderfully. I really cannot think of any of his books that I would not fully recommend!

Fun book with a good message for kids and adults, November 30, 2008
By 5minutesforbooks (Houston, TX)

As you might imagine, this book is about a young boy who had too many toys. His family tripped over them, he hoarded even the ones that were broken, and his mom finally decided that some of them had to go!
This book is illustrated in David Shannon's typical bright and whimsical style. I think that kids are attracted to the larger-than-life characterizations of the children, parents, and even inanimate objects.
My four-year-old son Kyle enjoyed it, chuckling in all the right places, and has even asked to hear it again. As for me -- well, it's inspired me to clear out some of those toys, and to even think twice about what I buy -- for my kids and others -- this holiday season.

My Son's favorite, January 12, 2009
By Big Book Fan (Utah)

This book is my 3 year old son's favorite. He loves staring at all the toys and will even read it to himself sometimes. The illustrations are amazing, and the story teaches a good lesson I don't mind him hearing over and over and over and over again.

That's Our House, February 26, 2009

I don't know about you, but David Shannon described our son and his toys almost to a tee. We have a room just for his toys and still, they manage to appear in all different places -- in the house, car, my purse. Children think the book is funny, but adults (myself, my son's pre-school teachers, librarians) love this funny and sympathetic book.

Don't we all just have too many toys! That is exactly why we should buy more books and in particular this one this Holiday Season. The book is clever, fun & the most important thing: my kids love it. I think it is something all kids will be able to relate too :)

Too Many Toys, November 7, 2008
By TCM Reviewer (Calgary, Canada)

|
Spencer had too many toys. His parents gave him toys. His grandparents gave him toys. Even the dentist gave him toys. Toys were everywhere and there was no where to walk. Eventually, the mess became too much. Finally, Spencer's Mom said he had to clean up.
Too Many Toys is a story that will resonate with adults. We try to give our kids and grandkids all the best but sometimes we go overboard. The simple basics always win out in the end.
This adult theme is mostly lost on the little ones who read this book. Moreover, the scary faces with huge popping out eyes and teeth are somewhat scary.

So Glad We're Not the Only Ones! ~ Fabulous Book, September 21, 2009
By ReaderWriter'nMom (Bethel, CT USA)

My daughter brought this home from the school library on Friday. It's book-dedication time at school and I think this is the book we'll be dedicating to both kids this year.
I have to admit, my high opinion of "Too Many Toys" is partly because I'm so thrilled to know we aren't the only parents who are a little overwhelmed by the whole concept of toy management. An outsider who sees toys "spilling down the stairs and into the living room," as the book so aptly describes, might wonder why we're so lazy. Haven't we EVER cleaned our house or told our kids "no!"? It's all easier said than done, as this book portrays beautifully. For both parent and child.
My kids laughed out loud, insisted we read it to them several times and each read it out loud themselves a few times more. When I asked if they saw themselves in Spencer, their sheepish smiles told me they did. It helped them recognize their own silliness a bit, as well as their parents' frustration.
Be sure to look at the illustrations. Spencer's big sad eyes, the mom's expression when she's looking at the egg-shaped pirate telling her off, and the details in the ridiculous toys Spencer can't part with--are all priceless.

David Shannon really knows my kid!, January 24, 2009

This book brings parents to tears in laughter. The author seems to know my own kid all too well. Our 6 yr old son loves the book and likes how much we enjoy reading it with him. The art work is fantastic and detailed. We plan to buy this book for other kids as presents.

A lecture, not a story, December 22, 2009
By Amy Henry (Nipomo, CA United States)
|
|
We have all of David Shannon's books, and his illustrations and stories are always so funny! But this one, Too Many Toys, is disappointing. While the illustrations are fun as ever (my son loves pointing to the same toys he has), the story itself isn't really a story: it's a public service announcement from parents, a dull and boring lecture on putting toys away. It's not fun or silly at all. It's just not cute.
What we started doing was just looking at the pictures and making up our own stories to fit.
You can't go wrong with the David series that he has, such as No David!, Oops!, etc.

Too Many Toys is the perfect book for kids and moms who have a hard time organizing and saying good-bye to old toys. David Shannon is a master at getting to the heart and mind of the child.

Funny--not inspirational though!, December 5, 2010
By mom2two

I have a 4.5 year old and a 2.5 year old and every year for St. Nicholas morning they each receive a new book. I usually pick titles about the nativity story or a Christmas book with a religious message, but went a different route this year. I had chosen Yes Virginia for my oldest (very sweet and cute!). I was looking for something for my younger child when I came across this title. Reading some of the reviews I anticipated that it would have some sort of message that it's important to pass along toys for those who don't have as many blessings--not that the book would center on that but I expected maybe a line or page about it--but alas, it's more a funny book about "too many toys." SPOILER ALERT--the very last page is him turning the box with the old toys he finally parted with into a new toy airplane. It's cute, but it didn't serve the purpose that I had hoped for St. Nicholas morning! It could provide a conversation starter for parents who want children to understand that they don't need so many toys, and in my case to talk to them about the importance of donating them to other children. But if you're looking for a heartfelt book with a strong message about not being selfish and sharing with others--this is not it!

Great story and illustration!, December 1, 2010
By Jacaranda

I have read this book to my 4 year old son several times. We both enjoyed reading it. It puts a smile in our faces every time we go through the pages!
This is a great book for this time of the year(christmas) considering children get way too many toys and parents try to convince the kids that they need to get rid of the old ones.
Great lines and pictures! All david Shanon's books are great but this one is probably my favourite.

The illustrations, the elegant use of language, the rhythm of the phrases, the message, the humor -- all are top-notch in this book that is now one of my 6-year-old's favorites. It was a big hit at our school book fair. Perfect for boys or girls.

A clutter of FUN!!, November 1, 2009
By author, Coyotes in the K.. (Colorado)

This book was delightful. The exciting and captivating illustrations entice readers to follow Spencer on his tale of excessive toy clutter and their ongoing management. Mom is frazzled while her son is dazzled at the end with his most prized toy of all. A must read for families of toy hoarding folk

This is a fun story that many parents (and children) can relate to! SPENCER ..., October 9, 2009
By Dragonfly77 (Vermont)
|
|
Spencer had a lot of toys. So many in fact, they covered his room from wall to wall and even "spilled down the stairs and into the living room." In his sandbox he had trucks, a car, a pail, a rake and even a couple of blocks. In the tub it was hard to see Spencer because there were so many floating critters and tub toys he looked just like one of them. Quack, quack. He even had four rubber ducks. He played with quiet toys, loud `n crazy electronic toys, stuffies and plastic army toys. If it was manufactured, it looked like Spencer had one!
You name it, he had it because "everyone gave toys to Spencer." It's good to have lots of relatives, isn't it? He even got some neat stuff at Kidburger, toys at school using his Peace Person Points and even the dentist and the doctor parted with a few if he behaved himself. There was a problem though. Tripping over them became a problem for his mom and dad. One day she got really mad. "SPENCER, YOU HAVE TOO MANY TOYS!" She was insisting that he get rid of them, but he liked them all. What was he going to do?
This is a fun story that many parents (and children) can relate to. The generosity of friends, relatives and can really make your house look like a toy store, to say nothing of one big hazard. Spencer is adorable and the art work is detailed, colorful, busy and bright. This is one book that few parents will be able to pass up!

This is a fantastic story about a boy with too many toys, and his discovery of fun with a box. It made me giggle to read it to my own boys-with-too-many-toys. It's a great read-aloud and the pictures are hysterical.

It is appropriate for a bit older child than mine, December 6, 2008
By Working Mom (Minnesota)

I have a 21 month old who loves the "David" series written by this author. This one is great, but has a bit more mature illustrations that my son doesn't quite grasp - some are on the edge of being a bit scary. It would great for older preschoolers though.
