this author knows her stuff. this is a good, very up-to-date handbook for the serious endurance athlete (and for the serious weekend warrior!). as a former pro triathlete, and still a hack marathoner, i had not read a sports nutrition book in several years. for me, this book was a great refresher, and also a reminder of the importance of proper diet in a high performance lifestyle. highly recommended for people who are active and either already performing at a high level, or training to improve their performance. runners, skiers, hikers, cyclists, triathletes, etc. will find relevant, sport-specific info, too.

I thought this book would be too technical for me, the non-elite endurance runner, but I was wrong. Not to say there isn't information that would help the elite athlete - there is - but I was bowled over by the easy-to-read, no-nonsense, useful suggestions on how to go the distance. (In fact, I learned as much from the "other" endurance sports as I did from the running sections. Want to run a marathon? Check out the information from the RAM cycling section...the info there applies perfectly! ) Also, GREAT athlete interviews and case studies. This is a must-read for the budding or elite athlete or any coach or advisor. You'll find yourself going back to it over and over again.

I am in my mid-40s and have toyed with the idea of doing a triathlon for quite some time. Somehow, when I would begin to really get the training ramped up, I would run in to a problem. I believe that I was probably bringing on the problems with less than ideal nutrition. So, though I harbor no aspirations of being a serious athlete, I have found that nutrition is an important--and often overlooked--aspect for even recreational athletes like me. Using the information in this book is allowing me to push my training farther than I ever have before and will get me across the finish line for my first triathlon sometime this summer.

An awesome resource for any endurance athlete, April 5, 2007

I'm an aging triathlete, who still enjoys competing but now has to balance my obsession with family, kids, job etc. As I can no longer log huge training hours, I've had to look for other (smarter?) ways to maintain/improve my performance. Awhile back I borrowed a copy of this book from a friend, and found it massively valuable. It has truly changed the way I train and compete, and has had a huge impact on my performance. When the new edition came out I returned my borrowed (and now excessively dog-eared) copy and bought the latest version. It's actually much improved from the original version. Most of the content is still the same (and just as valuable), but the organization is much improved and I've found it's easier to get sport-specific info without wading through the extra stuff. I'd strongly recommend this book to any athlete (serious or casual) who wants to better enjoy their sport and/or improve their performance.

I practice & teach yoga. Sometimes I take nice long hikes. I'm also a dietitian. But until I read Suzanne Eberle's 2nd edition of Endurance Sports Nutrition, I never fully appreciated just how different life is, nutritionally, for endurance athletes. And who could better tell us about it and how to eat to maximize training, racing, recovery and good health than an elite runner and sports dietitian?
If you are a long distance runner, biker, triathelete or participate in another seemingly impossible endurance challenge, please do your loved ones a favor and pick up this book. It is highly detailed and filled with personal stories from elite athletes on how they balance the body-punishing aspects of their sports with conscious nutrition to refuel, rebuild and sustain.
Any athlete will find something here that will bolster their success.

This is a serious sports nutrition book for serious athletes. It is packed with information for the endurance athlete or those coaching endurance/elite athletes. In addition to providing a complete nutritional overview for the elite athlete, Endurance Sports touches on other related subjects such as hydration, the effectiveness of supplements, food intolerances, eating disorders and even optimal eating for the vegetarian athlete. As a nutrition writer, this book is an integral part of my reference library.

I've been running since I was in high school and continued during and after graduationg college. It wasn't until recently that I decided to run my first half marathon. I have read lots of material on training and nutrition, but none have been as complete and informative. The first eight chapters are devoted to all endurance athletes. The last few chapters are each devoted to a particular endurance sport. This book has taught me how to fully prepare and train to successfully reach my goal. I would suggest this book for anyone interested in endurance sports.

Suzanne knows her stuff. I've been an ultrarunner and endurance athlete for nearly 25 years and I find Suzanne's wisdom and advice both on target and incredibly helpful. In fact, as I get older, which I am, her advice is seemingly even more relevant. Following her advice on everything from hydration to nutrition to stretching has been vital to me being able to keep doing what I love to do. The bottom line is that proper nutrition is key to optimal performance and the information in this book can ensure you're geting both.

If you think the Standard American Diet is fine, you'll like this book, November 30, 2010

I was disappointed to run into the FDA Food Pyramid in the first couple of pages, and unquestioned sugggestions of canned vegetables as a way to meet your FDA food group requirements. Sorry, but you don't have to be a radical to know that the Standard American Diet is an unfulfilled promise full of nutritionally empty fake food, and that the FDA is in charge of promoting ag products (meat, cheese, frankenfoods (Round--Up Ready everything for starters) and 3,000 colors, shapes and textures of corn starches and corn sugars) way before promoting dietary common sense. I tossed this book out pretty early into it. I fear that few people will win races on any version of the Standard American Diet, except to the drug store for supplements, statins, & 25 other remedies for a polluted, inflamed and malnourished body!
Eat green, eat clean, lose the cans, cartons & jars, avoid sugar & the ubiquitous, over-processed crap and you'll be happy, healthy and strong! Meanwhile, I'm still looking for an endurance athlete's nutritional guide that's a little more nutritionally nuanced.

Everything you need to know and more, April 8, 2010

Being an endurance athlete, nutrition is as important as training itself. That is why, every athlete has the responsability to take charge of their own health and safety, meaning every athlete must know enough about nutrition to understand your body. You can have help from specialists, but the responsability is always yours in the end. When I bought this book, I also bought two other books on Endurance Sports Nutrition. Although the other books where good, this one excells! This is one of those books that are, in one word, COMPLETE. Like the "The Lore of Running" is the definitive book for running, this is the definitive book for endurance nutrition. I figure the author decided she didn't want to write more books on the subject, so this one has everything. There is knowledge for Ultramarathons, Multiday events and even for dealing with altitude. After reading it, I feel like my previous experience in sport was like a blind chase. Excelent. Bravo.

I found this book to be well written and factual. I like the care Eberle has taken to cover the pros and cons, risks and rewards, of various common methods and dietary recommendations. In the section on dietary supplements Eberle says "When it comes to deciphering health claims, a healthy dose of skepticism and a bit of common sense can help steer you through the maze." that sort of good judgment is typical here. I think a lot of crap (correction, I should say pseudoscience) has been written on the subject of sports nutrition. Eberle helps you sort out what is based on the evidence and what is not. I like that and recommend this book. The title says it all.

I haven't had a chance to read the whole book however what I have read has been helpful and informative. The book itself was shipped in excellent condition and, like many of the books I've bought through dentalBookshop, I think I purchased it used and it looks new. And, I don't plan on just using it to balance out my washing machine ;-).

Big Difference in Performance, April 12, 2011

I've totally transformed my level of performance. I might be stronger and faster than when I was even in high school. I credit part of this sucess to healthier eating and better eating stategies before during and after workouts. I'm realizing that much of what I thought was muscle fatigue in the past, was primarily the lack of muscle glycogen. using a different diet protocol I did lose 30lbs in 2 months. But it left me without strenght and limited my exercie. Good for fast results, but expensive and only useful in the off season for a one time BIG weight loss.
It amazing that whe nyou pay attention ot what you wat and increase you ratio of whole grains fruits and veggies how much more volume you can eat, how full and satisfied you are and how mush energy and quickly you recover. Eat just 1 couple fatty cookies and you see how quick you caories go up and how unsatisfied you are a short time later.
The book itself is a little long winded. I get repetitive in the 2nd half, and could use more specific examples, sample menus that include eating up to 5000 calorie diets and examples of how to manage a day of overeating or a big meal on a special occassion.
Overall, a great read and worth the money!

I bought this when I was first getting into the iron man. A lot of it I already knew, but I do quite a bit of reading in the area. It did, however, expand my knowledge on what i knew about nutrition from a bodybuilding perspective to include knowledge on endurance training. You'll definitely learn something reading this book!
