Throughout the years, dental health has often been characterized as a reflection of our overall health, where bad oral health results from issues with other parts of our body. But what if we flipped the paradigm? What if we thought about dental health as the foundation for our physical health as a whole? Dr. Steven Lin, an experienced dentist and the world’s first dental nutritionist, has analyzed our ancestral traditions, epigenetics, gut health, and the microbiome in order to develop food-based principles for a literal top-down holistic health approach. Merging dental and nutritional science, Dr. Lin lays out the dietary program that can help ensure you won’t need dental fillings or cholesterol medications—and give you the resources to raise kids who develop naturally straight teeth. With our mouth as the gatekeeper of our gut, keeping our oral microbiome balanced will create a healthy body through a healthy mouth. Dr. Lin arms you with a 40-day meal plan, complete with the Dental Diet food pyramid, exercises for the mouth, recipes, and cooking techniques to help you easily and successfully implement his techniques into your everyday life. The tools to improve overall wellness levels and reverse disease are closer than we think—in our markets, in our pantries, and, most frequently, in our mouths—if not just a well-chosen bite or two away. Author Information Dr. Steven Lin is a board-accredited dentist, speaker, and author. Frustrated by the dental profession’s limited approach to applying without addressing the cause of disease, Dr. Lin merged anthropological, physiological, and nutritional science with oral health to integrate effective prevention strategies into his dental practice. A passionate health educator, Dr. Lin engages in a wide variety of community and institutional programs to grow awareness of preventative lifestyles. He is the dental expert for I Quit Sugar, the online platform of best-selling author Sarah Wilson. Dr. Lin is based out of Sydney, Australia.

Nothing new for me, March 07, 2018

If you know anything about the Paleo diet or Weston Price or the Nourishing Traditions book, then this book is yet another book along those lines. Eat no processed foods and stay away from processed grains and sugar and drink some bone broth, plus eat plenty of vegetables with healthy fats and protein.
After 20 years of being sick, I believe the real culprit is blood sugar. So don’t eat anything that raises your blood sugar.
Dr Lin talks about getting nutrition from our diet by eating the right foods yet I feel that our stomachs are so damaged from sugar that we cannot absorb all the nutrients even if we are eating nutritious foods which is why I have started to take supplements.
My teeth should be healing but they are not even though I make my own low carb food from scratch and have for years but I have SIBO and carb intolerance or hypoglycemia, two things which cannot be cured by eating the “right” foods. I have Sjogren’s too and I supposedly get cavities by not having the right amount of saliva. He says “it’s not simply that sugar combines with bacteria to create decay but too much sugar sparks a chain reaction and leaches calcium from the enamel too quickly”. But in the end…it is still all about sugar or food that turns into sugar.
If you don’t know much about the Paleo diet, Nourishing Traditions or Weston Price, then this book will tell you about real food and might enlighten you on diet and the gut but for me there’s nothing new.

Link between diet and dental health...., March 02, 2018

the title is not perfectly fitting for the book.... but the author is a dentist, so I get it... the book is mostly a diet book...with a small section dedicated towards dental health and some key supplements to keep teeth healthy... the diet, well, its on par with where most of science is heading today... low carb, high quality fats and proteins... Interesting info on mouth pro biotics and how they can affect dental decay....

Unappetizing and inconvenient recipes, February 27, 2018
By Me

I rather wish I could un-buy this book. Part way through, and already, there is no way we will eat the recipes in this book. It would require buying too much special stuff and cooking things that sound very unappetizing. Beef liver cooked in lard? Pate? Salmon head soup? Sauerkraut? Fennel and Leek Hot Pot with lard and thyme etc? Israeli style eggs? He means shakshuka, that egg with bell pepper and tomato paste they eat in Israel. I lived in Israel once. Love Israelis, hate shakshuka! ORGAN meatballs? Definitely NOT. This is not going to happen. I don't even think these recipes are necessary. You can eat fats and meats and veggies without strange recipes. For the record, I'm 43 years old, no gum disease, never had a cavity in my life. I do eat whole-fat foods, whole butter, milk, cheeses, eggs, full grains, and meat and salmon. So, it's somewhat what the author suggests. We eat mostly organic/non-GMO. We don't eat much processed food/sugar. Maybe that's why I don't have cavities. I could completely cut out sugar as the author suggests, OK. But the recipes are too much, despite that we do cook, extensively, use herbs, grow a huge veggie garden and sprout sprouts. We make our own soups. We're not afraid to try new healthy foods but these recipes just won't fly. So, while some of his information is very interesting, I think some readers will be disappointed by the recipes. Probably some people will like them, especially if they're single and have lots of time and money to get all the odd ingredients and plan these meals, (and have no family to cook for, who might dislike them) perhaps his menu will work for them. I have healthy teeth. I just bought the book to ensure our toddler grows up to have healthy teeth. We already seriously limit sugar our toddler eats, give whole foods, fats, and still nurse, so is getting breast milk, which the author recommends for babies. Well, anyway, I'll try to finish the book and not let the impossibility of his recipes deter me. Wish he included recipes more palatable to a wider audience, or offered more alternatives. Will try to adapt some of the recipes and just substitute others entirely.

Read the whole book in four days, it's fascinating, interesting, logical, research based, non commercial book.
I found it really surprising.
Although i did know about the suger industry, health relationships, but it definitely debunked some misconceptions about some foods.
I'll update if necessary.

Fall in Love..., February 25, 2018

Every person- especially parents and dental professionals- needs this book! I have read many books on dental health and have been familiar with Weston Price for 10 years and this is the most comprehensive, fascinating, and up-to-date of any of them. You will seriously not only fall in love with this book and the passionate Dr. Lin who beautifully weaves together the complete story of how our jaws and teeth are formed and maintained as a part of our entire body- but you will also fall in love with your own teeth as you are empowered to nourish them from the inside out. This book gives you all the HOWs through breathing exercises and a great diet plan with recipes but more importantly, it gives you a straight-forward but complete WHY that will inspire you to follow through on it. This is all easily do-able and will completely change your life for the better. Personally, I have changed how I breathe after understanding all the reasons behind the headaches, TMJ disorder, low bone density and various other problems I have had since a youth. While it would have been amazing to know this a long time ago when low-fat, high grain diets were considered healthy, I am so grateful for being able to allow my body to heal and strengthen now and help my kids do the same. Following this higher fat, rich in veggies and protein diet, along with adding in the fat-soluble vitamins suggested has completely healed my gum sensitivity and my teeth are whiter and stronger than ever. Also my skin is much better and chronic migraines are all but gone. Once you get through the withdraw from sugar and carbs, you will no longer crave them and the diet becomes easy and natural- do what nourishes your body. I would also like to mention my husband, who grew up in a remote part of the Himalayas without access to sugar and modern foods, has perfect, beautiful teeth although he never brushed until he was an adult and then sporadically. This book is the real deal and helps restore my trust that the dental profession will evolve to prevent tooth problems with Dr. Lin leading the way.
