What's the best diet for good health and athletic performance? Nancy Clark, M.S., R.D., describes the dietary balance and specific foods shown to be optimal for athletes from recreational exercisers to Olympic hopefuls, citing supporting studies. Refreshingly free of high-protein hype, Clark emphasizes a varied, wholesome, moderate diet high in complex carbohydrates ("without question, wholesome carbohydrates are the best choices for fueling your muscles and promoting good health"), especially whole grains and starches; adequate but not excessive protein; and 20 to 35 percent fat. Learn the components and variables of your ideal diet, with tables of nutritional information and marvelous tidbits, such as calorie/fat counts of various fast foods. Did you realize that an Au Bon Pain pecan roll has 800 calories and 45 grams of fat--double the calories/fat in a serving of KFC's Crispy Strips? Did you know that a Dunkin' Donuts 16-ounce Coffee Coolatta with cream has 410 calories and 22 grams of fat--about equivalent to a McDonald's Quarter-Pounder? Clark, a well-known sports nutrition expert, also covers weight loss, weight gain, eating disorders, and includes 72 recipes. Highly recommended for athletes, exercisers, and average folk who want to understand how to design a personalized diet. --Joan Price

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Entirely Dissappointed By This Book, August 29, 2005
By Recyclist (Vancouver Island)
I purchased Nancy Clark's "Sports Nutrition Guidebook 3rd Ed." due to the great reviews it received from other users on Amazon. Needless to say, judging by the title of this review, I'm regretting my purchase.

Simply put, this book seems to focus on people who are exercising to loose weight. It is rife with sections on weight loss, dieting and body image. I was under the impression that this was a guidebook for athletes, not a guide for someone wanting to loose weight at the gym.

I will save the reader much effort by listing Nancy Clark's main points:

1.Your diet should be 65% carbohydrates, 25% fat and 10% protein.

2.Eat before and after exercise to provide fuel and enhance recovery.

3.Start the day with a balanced breakfast

That's about the extent of the information presented. Of course there is some useful information about vitamin/nutritional/glycemic values of certain foods, but this information can easily be found through an internet search. Furthermore, the recipies just aren't that good. I've tried enough of them to start looking elsewhere for meal ideas.

Finally, dietary supplements are given very little attention. No mention of glutamine, creatine, HMB, Medium-Chain Triglycerides etc. This is intolerable for a book on sports nutrition.

In my opinion this book should be called "Fitness Nutrition Guidebook". It is a sports guidebook only in the most limited sense. If you are looking for a book to help you get in shape then I think this will fit the bill. If you are an athlete looking to take your training to the next level then I would look elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nutrition Made Easy, November 11, 2000
By Michael Merlino
As a personal fitness trainer, I am always looking for common sense ways to explain proper nutrition to my clients. At first I bought this book for myself to help improve my running and get the most out of my workouts. What I found was a book that will not only help an athlete improve performance but has common sense nutritional information for almost anyone. Nancy is a Registered Dietitian who cuts through the nutrition myths and lays out a coming sense eating plan that works for almost anyone. If you are looking for a new fad diet you won't find it here although she has added a couple of chapters on sensible weight management in the latest edition. Sports specific chapters include how to carbo load before an event and what it really takes to add muscle mass. The book has over 200 quick and easy recipes that help round out your nutrition plan. After you read it you will wonder why you didn't take this common sense approach to nutrition years ago. Even if you buy it and don't read it from cover to cover, you can still pick up invaluable tips just browsing through and reading her informative tables and charts. A great way to jumpstart your nutrition plan by eating sensibly, keeping your body fueled and keeping your energy up.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  A good addition to your nutrition library, but..., February 12, 2003
By marty2008 (Washington DC)
This book is great for endurance athletes. I run about 15-20 miles per week and it was helpful for me to learn about the importance of carbo loading and glycogen stores. The book also has many useful tables and facts. Nancy Clark addresses all the major topics on sports nutrition.

Having said that, she sticks a bit too closely to the FDA food pyramid, suggesting that just 15% of your daily calories come from protein. This seems awfully low to me (perhaps I've been tainted by the Adkins Diet craze?).

She also cites many "studies" but most of them were done on just seven male athletes. It was hard for me to buy into all the results. I do appreciate supporting evidence, but such a small group of test subjects made me question her assertions.

She talks about vitamins and minerals as the "spark plugs" of a good diet, but suggests sticking crackers in your gym bag, which have absolutely no nutritional value. She also doesn't recommend taking vitamin supplements. As a woman, I can't see the harm in making sure I have enough calcium, iron and folic acid in my diet (most women don't).

Most of the recipes are great, like the banana bread. However, she shot herself in the foot by supplying the percentages of carbs, protein and fat in each dish. In the rest of the book, she suggests getting 60-70% of your calories from carbohydrates, but very few of her recipes have such a high percentage of carbs - even the pasta dishes. One other surprise: the recipe for the pasta with spinach and pine nuts suggests adding "3-4 tablespoons" of oil! Sounds more like oil loading.

I am glad I read the book, but I think I will be looking for another book with other points of view to balance Nancy's suggestions.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Helpful and Pracitcal Guide for Good Nutrition, September 15, 2005
By J. Arnez (California)
I am currently training for my first marathon. I needed a book that would teach me how to eat for the long runs, help me to lose weight and have the energy I need.

Nancy Clark's book is practical, easy to understand and it works for me. The recipes in the back of the book are great - even my kids are eating them! This is not the kind of book that you just read once through. The book is packed with information. It is a reference tool. I refer back to it often as I have questions and am working to fine tune my eating.

I heartily recommend Nancy Clark's Sports Nutrition Guidebook!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great book if you want to improve your performance, April 10, 2003
By rigor mortis is my only hope for.. (Norman, OK USA)
I just read my title and probably should clarify that I am talking about your sports performance!!! I am currently training for a marathon and have used the information in this book to improve my nutrition to optimal levels for the extended running levels of marathon training. It has gotten me through well. I have been able to keep my weight stable and my energy levels up. Highly readable, it provides accurate and useable information on sports nutrition. I also recommend the "Food Guide for Marathoners" from the same author, which is more specific to the marathon runner.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  An excellent analysis of the needs of part time athletes!, February 24, 1999
By John Taylor (Beverly, Massachusetts)
I liked Nancy Clark's book for two reasons. First, I appreciated her clear and concise presentation of the information. Second, the way she used scientific studies, etc. to back up her conclusions appealed to me. As a part time triathlete, I refer to this book by her and others by Covert Bailey as my primary reference tools on nutrition.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Informative AND a good read, September 20, 2000
By A Customer
I actually read this book cover to cover! The only nutrition book an athletic person really needs. Her examples are interesting (and common), and the book is well written. Overall, she is good at reminding the athletic reader of how simple good nutrition can be. My only complaint is there isn't really enough information for vegetarian and vegan athletes.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  A good source for the general public, but not good for bodybuilding, December 30, 2010
By Ron
The book is a good source for the general public. Nancy being a dietitian, the book is written from a dietitian's point of view not an exercise scientist. If you are interested in bodybuilding and reducing your body fat this is a terrible book. It is good for common weight lose not for obtaining a low percentage of body fat. In certain areas the information in this book might work well for some performance athletes. I am a personal trainer and it is a good source for general people trying to lose weight, but sucks for my clients already in shape. The chapter on bucking can actually be beneficial at least in my opinion. My advice for any one looking for a good sports nutrition book, do not get it if the author is a R.D.(Registered Dietitian). Most R.D.s are not very good when it come to sports nutrition unless they also have an exercise and fitness background. I am speaking from experience, I have a B.S. in nutrition and dietetics and 90% of my knowledge in the area of sports nutrition came from my own self study.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Very Basic, August 17, 2010
By Marcus A. Hawkins (Petaluma CA)
Didn't like the book, very basic for someone who has no idea how to eat right. The book based on the "Pyramid", it gives general ideas about the right food but does not specify how the same food affects if eaten at different times. Also the metabolic types described very primitive and vague. I wish there would be more useful information instead of just short articles that jump from topic to topic.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  an outstanding guide, January 31, 2008
By Jason A. Greer (the Carolinas)
The Sports Nutrition Guidebook is a useful resource for the average, healthy individual to have at hand as a nutritional resource. This book is more of a healthy living guide, than a sport specific guide, Individuals who are engaging in sports that require a lot of anaerobic activity, like football or baseball will not find this book as useful, but they will still find some great instruction. For endurance sports such as running or cycling, or for the general weekend warrior looking to have nutrition be a part of a healthy lifestyle, that is not concerned with larger than normal weight loss, this book is a good esource.

While basic advice is well-written here, that shouldn't be really new to anyone who is familiar with good nutrition: a balance of proteins, carbohydrates, fiber, and dairy; and the importance of regular meals, some care is taken to readjust thinking about fad diets and dietary myths, especially in preparation for physical activity. Unbalanced approaches to carbohydrates, fluid, protein, etc. and their dangers are detailed in an easy to understand format. The chapter on misusing a healthy lifestyle for rapid weight loss or other eating disorders is tactfully written.

The last third of the book is a useful recipe guide that applies principles taught in the book into practical meal planning steps that are neither arduous nor difficult for active individuals to adapt to. Creating a healthy approach to the body, especially in view of a fat obssessed society calls for balance and patience. There is nothing sudden or radical about the advice in this book, as it is above all, caling for a lifestyle that is healthy and active and is designed to provide nutrional advice for helping individuals achieve those goals. This book is a great resource for active people, who want sound, scientific advice that meets the needs of individuals in today's fast paced society.

I teach sports nutrition to college students. This book has been great because it helped me relate general nutrition to the athlete. The information is accurate and the examples are very helfpul. Nancy Clark also adds informative tables that relate to sports nutrition. I recommend this book to athletes and nonathletes alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Sound nutrition education, March 11, 2010
By Uncle Gonzo (Texas)
I was looking for a book that would teach me well grounded, scientific nutrition. The kind of book where I could learn what a nutritionist might learn in school. This book does just that. No fad stuff in here. She actually has a small section where she talks about the most common fad diets today, and points out their short comings(and even their strengths if they have any). I love how the book was organized to teach how to eat daily, before an event, during events, and after events. Some info on eating to lose weight, but this is not really a "diet" book, though I think even those looking to lose weight could benefit from this book. There is also info on how to gain weight if that is what you are looking for.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  My Nutrition Bible, December 11, 2004
By galitsharon (New York, NY, USA)
I've had this book for years. The pages are dog-eared and the recipe pages have flour spashed on them. I've read it cover-to-cover about ten times, and I still refer to it for the details I overlooked. The true test? My friends and co-workers marvel at my lunches and jealously comment on how healthy and delicious my lunches look. And they are healthy and delicious - thanks to The Sports Nutrition Guidebook. This book taught me how to eat healthfully, exercise and lose weight. It will get you through any nutritional stage you're in and bring you to a healthier place.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Yes! A Simple and Complete Book for All Your Nutrition Needs., November 23, 2008
By Andrew Chang: 7-Hour School Week and Health, ... (Bay Area)
"Boost your energy, reduce stress, lose body fat, build muscle, and improve your performance with the all-time best-selling sports nutrition guide."

This is the ONLY book on nutrition you need (besides In Defense of Health and my program). I honor and thank Nancy for writing the most complete, simple, and profound books on nutrition.

Don't waste your time, energy, and money with all the new fad diets that promise quick-fixes and instant-results with "super food", "magic pill", or "secret supplement."

Eat 5-7 times small, balanced, natural meals a day; drink plenty of water; and eat in accordance to activity level.

Being healthy isn't hard once you know the right information. This book has it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  The only book on nutrition you will ever need., January 28, 2005
By Rob W. McWhirter (Pittsburgh, PA USA)
This will be the only book on nutrition that that average person will ever need. In a time of fad diets and "loose weight quick pills" this book is truly a diamond in the ruff. I didn't realize how little I knew about nutrition until I read this book. The advice in this book is simple and effective. After just a few months I notice a big difference in my health and quality of life.

So while your friends on the Atkins Diet are having heart attacks and trying to muster up enough energy to get out of bed in the morning, you can be reading this book and forever changing your life for the better. Perhaps you should also recommend this book to our friends. ;-)

This is a common sense approach to weight loss and just feeling better. The only way I've ever lost weight is to eat low fat. You need not be an athlete or exercise regularly to benefit from Miss Clark's advice. It also helps those who might have problems concerning their heart, blood sugar, blood pressure et al. I've lost my craving for sugar and salt.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  absolutely wonderful, May 10, 2008
By Maria Paula Camargo (Bogota, Colombia)
I recommend this book to everyone. Although Nancy Clark calls it a Sport's Nutrition Guidebook, this is really a guide on the way everybody should eat in order to be healthy. She begins by giving general guidelines on what eating every day should be like. She explains why everything is important: carbs, protein, fat, sugar, dairy. Then she goes on to explain what it is each of these types of food does in the body and how and why we should eat them. She also explains how to eat and when to eat. It is an extremely detailed book where you get a whole new outlook on food. There's also some great chapters with recipes.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A marvelous educational tool for coaches and athletes., August 24, 1998

As a coach and athlete, it is important for me to master the many aspects of a sport. Swimming is a sport like many that requires much physical, mental, and emotionally training, but the real edge in training and competition performance comes from the mastery of the proper nutritional diet. Nancy Clark provides steps for coaches and athletes to obtain a mastery of nutrition. She proves the statement that practice is perfect, even for nutrition.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Info For Everyone, February 24, 2009
By Shelly
The book is well written with easy to understand concepts. You do not have to be a dietician to understand what Ms. Clark is talking about. The ideas apply to everyone, not just athletes. Granted, there is some in depth information for athletes regarding breakdown of food groups and timing of meals and snacks. No gimmicks here or selling of the latest and greatest "diet". Just solid nutrition!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Everything everyone needs to know, September 30, 2008
By M. Tangney (Wollaston, MA United States)
I am very happy with this book. This book is very complete and really well organized. It was recommended to me by both my personal trainer and my Cycle class instructor (also a personal trainer). I am not an athlete but I do an hour or two of fitness work nearly every day at the gym. I was glad to see lots of information for my level of fitness and as well as my fitness program. Book discusses not just what to eat but how much, and ratios, and the whys of each. I think this book is useful and helpful no matter how little or how great your level of sports and fitness activity.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  More energy and stamina, October 30, 2008
By PKaye (Phoenix, AZ)
We gave this book to our daughter who is training for a marathon. She was complaining about being tired all the time. After reading and following the information in the book, she reports increased energy and stamina and over-all feeling much better. She reports she is eating more of the right foods and still lost weight. A winner - the book and the daughter!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesome information!, August 12, 2010
By dmtspaces (Los Angeles, CA USA)
This is a great book with loads of information...you read it and feel like you should know all this already but for some reason, you don't. This book is good if you are looking to lose weight, gain muscle, or just eat properly. You will greatly benefit if you are exercising and not seeing the results that you are expecting. As an extra, you get some recipes in the back of the book. I have this book with me in my car all the time so I can look up something really quick if I need to. Before this book, I read alot of books that basically catered to some supplement or some diet fad...this is the real deal. This book will not tell you not to eat sweets, it will tell you to have alot less of them...and increase your veggies and fruits and whole grains...stuff you should already know but stated in a concise, efficient way. If you are working out and feel you need the right dietary information, get this book. This book has got me looking into becoming a registered dietician, you know, those people you pay alot of money to tell you the same thing as this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great overview of nutrition principles, July 13, 2009
By Knud A. Hermansen
This is a great book for introducing you to overall nutrition concepts - even for those who are not focused on sports nutrition. One of my goals is to get a better understanding of how to eat right for my running and I used this book to get started.

Clark sites study after study to support her overall thesis and presents a very well support thesis. The major points that I got from this book were: (1) eat the right combination of nutrients by aiming for 3 of the 5 food groups at each meal and (2) the key to loosing or controlling weights in calories - not carb-protein ratios.

Clark first goes through each of the food groups and goes over what quantities and types we should be aiming for in each. Throughout the book she debunks various fad diets. She also spends a lot of time looking at eating disorders, which I did not find quite a useful. The final section of the book goes over numerous recipes.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Buy this one: Clear, to the Point, Covers all Bases, March 29, 2009
By Gabriel Black (New York, NY)
I've read about ten books on nutrition in the last several years, and Nancy Clark's "Sports Nutrition Guidebook" is without a doubt the best. It is clear, scientific, cuts straight through the fluff, entertaining, and has a wealth of information.

Also, if you want to lose weight, skip the fad diet books and read this one. This book has the most sensible advice on weight loss of any book I've read, unlike the numerous diet books that are written more to motivate the reader than to provide real information.

The guide is an excellent one which I can quote directly from for my clients without having to paraphrase. The terms are easy to understand and scientifically accurate/backed. My favorite part are the recipes - the perfect practical addition to help support the information provided.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Came highly recommended, March 11, 2012
By Angie
This book came came highly recommended to me by my girlfriend who is a dietitian. She said it covered basic nutrition not just for athletes. I bought this for my husband who has recently had 3 stents fitted and wanted to better understand his new diet. I have not read this book. Based on my girlfriend raving about it, I gave it 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Very Informative, August 16, 2005
By violencejack (NY)
Common sense with facts to back up the nutritional guidelines. There are numerous examples of how nutrition has a positive and negatvie effect for the active as well as non-active person. Realistic guidelines with realistic goals make this book easy to understand. There is plenty of information for all athletes of varying sports to assist them in achieving balanced eating habits that will benefit them throughout all their lives activities.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Sports nutrition guidebook versus other sports nutrition titles, May 17, 2012
By Emmanuel Cedillo V.
Hello, I am a racquet sports competitive athlete with daily training and games. I hold a B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in biosciences.
As I implied in the title, I am reviewing the book against other more modern titles such as the new title around there called "Advanced Sports Nutririon". Compared to these new titles Nancy Clark's work seems old and rather informal. The book can be qualified as a giant pamphlet instead of a serious sports nutrition book. The book has very very few references, this give me the idea that the book is almost completely the inspiration of Nancy Clark with the obvious risk of skewness of only one source of information. The frontal competitor of this book (Adv.Sports.Nut) has a bunch of serious, robust references of prestigious journals; new and robust knowledge is the product of a knowledge-compilation of several authors and not the opinions of only one author.
Another flaw of this book relies in the fact that the book is always very general, it never focuses in a particular segment of sport enthusiasts. You never now if the author is referring to occasional gym visitors, serious players or elite athletes, so confusing!
If you are serious about your healthy nutrition go and look elsewhere...
