1.0 out of 5 stars.  works great.......... for 2 months! Then it is DONE!, April 17, 2006
By Annie (Myrtle Beach, SC United States)
Although it appears to be a great product for the first couple of months... when it's done.. it's done! It simply STOPPED working after 2 months. If you purchase this item, be certain you purchase the small appliance replacement warranty from Amazon.. because the manufacturer certainly will not replace it!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  OK, March 8, 2006
By JB
I was looking for a double burner to replace a single coil burner. I went with this one because the the cast-iron heaters are 6-1/2" and 71/2" to accommodate both large and small pans, which make it safer. We like it OK, but it is slow to heat up.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  the thing about user reviews.., December 14, 2008
By MOOD
people dont usually write these reviews unless they have a problem with the product and want to warn other potential buyers.

i've been using this thing for well over a year now and it hasnt let me down one bit. its durable and requires no special care, just turn it on and set it to the level you want and let it do its thing. its reliable, quick, effortless and i use it nearly every day.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Solid performer that does what I need it to do, October 27, 2008
By CandaceVan (Connecticut, USA)
I don't usually write reviews of products, but when I saw the overwhelmingly negative reviews this product has received, I had to speak up. I've had one of these for several years, and it's been working -- and still works -- flawlessly. I use it mostly for keeping a pot of tea at the temperature I like throughout the day, and I'm quite pleased with how well I can control the temperature of the hot plate.

The heating plate is cast -- something, and it holds heat well. It does everything I want it to do exactly as I want it to do it, and the price is pleasantly modest. What more could I want? I don't know what planet these other folks are on, but the reason I returned to this product page is to buy a second one for my office!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  i like it, March 15, 2010
By Oldiesgirl47 (California, USA)
I ordered several different hot plate single burner cookers to see which one I liked best, and this one won. It's sturdy and heavy.. and unlike all the others, it can be CLEANED....which greatly prolongs its life..Impossible to clean the others... so they get tossed after a few months. Some of the cheaper models didn't heat properly after a while, and even became an electrical hazard so had to be discarded. This one seems to be a better made unit.
The control settings are accurate, and nice to have 3 cook settings, plus a 4th 'warm' setting.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Never gets hot, February 28, 2008
By CustomerCritique (New York)
This never gets hot enough to cook anything. You have to let it warm up for 10 minutes just to use it. The warm feature doesn't keep things warm either. I am sorry I chose this one, and I will have to buy another one and stick this one in the trash where it belongs.

Stayed warm when turned off.
Suddenly stopped working after 4 months (even though I hardly ever used it).

Need to buy another electric burner, but don't know what company to go with.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Defective On Arrival, January 18, 2007
By MysticTraveler (New York, USA)
I hate to rate something so low, but my experience warrants a low score.

The larger burner was defective from the onset - the knob turned but the burner remained on, and at full it seemed, regardless of the knob's setting. I had to unplug and plug in the unit to turn it off and on. The smaller burner worked!

Amazon was nice enough to refund me in full and even paid for the return shipping as well. Packing seemed fine too, guess it was a manufacturing defect. Hopefully this doesn't happen to many others.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Very poor quality !!, October 16, 2009
By Samir Vyas
I bought this about 3 weeks back - 9/21/09.
It seemed like good deal and it seemed sufficient for my needs

First week or two, it seemed to work fine. Heat was less then I would have wanted, but that could be more because of the hot plate rather then exposed "coil" itself.

But to my great surprise, this product stopped working completely in JUST TWO WEEKS
In two weeks, the markings on the knob ( which says "Low" and "Hi" ) are also erased !
Very POOR quality overall.

I am going to return this and stay away from Aroma brand !

The Aroma AHP-303 single hot plate that I ordered on October 3, 2009 does not work. Unfortunately I did not plug it in to try to use it until after the 30 day return period had expired. I rate this product at zero stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  heavy bottom, decent but only had it about a month, November 5, 2007
By Grace Guia (ny)
the one by toastmaster with similar heating element on top only lasts one year so i had to buy this one since both of mine clunked out.

this takes a while to start heating up but after initial heating it's just fine. I've only used it for minor cooking like eggs or beans (for rice and beans) so I can't say much else right now.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  I took it apart to examine the internals., February 18, 2012
By P Cheng
For all the users who have had this fail. There is a minor "flaw" with this product, but failure can be avoided easily.

There is a thermal fuse in the product located near the side of the device. You should maintain 6 inches of clearance around all sides (no towels, etc.) to prevent the thermal fuse from overheating causes the device to "fail". This fuse is intentionally sensitive to avoid the product from causing a fire.

(Ideal design would have been a resettable PTC fuse, but this would increase cost).

The temperature control is from a bimetallic switch whose tension is controlled by a screw connected to the knob. Internals are well built and mounted, albeit simple. Appropriate heat shielding is used.

Otherwise - don't expect magic. I purchased this for a sous vide and intentionally chose a simple cheap product. However caveats for users expecting fast temperature response: while it heats very quickly, it cools very slowly. (I did not rely on the thermostat to control the temperature, the included thermostat only very roughly controls the temperature and allows it to fluctuate wildly.)

3.0 out of 5 stars.  2 Years So Far, December 17, 2007
By Otto
I've had this hotplate for about 2 years, and I finally broke it. My pros and cons list:

Pro
- It gets hot enough for light frying, searing steak, keeping a pot of water at a boil, etc...
- Lights clearly indicate when the hotplate is heating.
- Black body of the hotplate is easily cleaned.
- Has served me faithfully for two years under heavy use.
- Pretty good power cord length. (Compared w/ a microwave I purchased recently that gave me 1ft of cord. wth?)

Con
- It feels a little slow at shifting temperatures compared to a conventional stove.
- When you first use each plate, they do give off an unpleasant aroma. This goes away. It is also reduced depending on how much you wash the plate ahead of time. Not a big deal.
- The larger plate died on me after 2 years. I'd be careful about buying this product if you want both plates to last longer. The other plate is working fine.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  "Aroma" is toxic, February 7, 2010
By P. Zimmerman (Philadelphia, PA United States)
All I wanted was a simple looking single burner to boil water for tea. It states in the manual that you should turn it on to the High setting for a few minutes before using. When I did this, a burning plastic sort of smell-toxic-fume filled the room. I turned it off and waited for it to cool down, then took it to my kitchen, placed it under the vent hood and turned it on High again, this time for 3 hours!!!. It still stinks up the room as soon as I turn it on. This thing is horrible.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  So far I love it, March 24, 2010
By BCP (USA)
Picked this up at Target today ...

I got rid of my microwave in my bedroom, because really do you honestly need a microwave in your bedroom? NO ... I mainly bought this for making tea in my bedroom without the noise of a microwave, it boiled water just as fast as my stovetop. I'm guessing if I really wanted to I could fry up some chicken with this bad boy, I might try that sometime while camping or something.

Even though I read this thing has crapped out for some I still went ahead and bought it, but I mean come on people that's the risk you take with any appliance//electronic//anything else for that matter especially nowadays things aren't made like they once were ...

If it craps out on me within 3 months definitely getting 2 stars ... but for now 5 stars ... cheers

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Two dead within a month each ..., March 3, 2010
By Gadget Lover (Northern Virginia)
I bought this model at a "brick and mortar" retailer and the large heating element died within a month. They replaced it and the same exact failure occurred again within a month. I'm on my way back for a refund. Something is definitely wrong with the design. It does a pretty good job when it works, but I have no faith in the manufacturer's quality control. Unless this is all you can afford, I recommend something with a better track record.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Save your money!!! - buy something else, May 14, 2007
By N. Williams (Abilene, TX United States)
This is probably the worst piece of kitchen electrics that I have ever used.

After 4 months of intermittent use one burner is completely burnt out and now the other takes 35 minutes to heat up to the point where it can boil a quart of water.

When it WAS working turning on one burner would cause the other to heat up, as well, which could be a bit dangerous.

Spend a little more and buy something else.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I love this product!, June 29, 2010
By Bonzie
This is an excellent piece of cooking equipment! I love it!!

I purchased this for my travel to India... I rented a room at a place in India and wanted to be able to prepare quick meals in the comfort of my room, including tea... well this electric burner heats up quickly and safely ... just like my stove at home. It is small enough to easily store away.

Now that I am back in the US form India travel I sometimes use it when other stove elements at home are in use.. so the burner helps things move along faster and the best part is that it works so wonderfully and just like a stove element... Its a must have tool... especially for single folks :-) .. or if you move around a lot on travels away from home..

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Not very powerful, July 19, 2010

I would not recommend this hotplate if you need something to cook on. It would be fine for melting, reheating, or keeping warm. Besides the small cooking surface it takes a long time for the element to heat up.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Great product, but mine died too, October 14, 2009
By G. McDougal (Los Angeles, CA United States)
I have to concur with the majority of other reviewers. I have one as well, and I really liked it but for some reason it doesn't respond any longer. It's built nicely, and I like the surface of the burner, but it no longer heats up. I've had mine for a few months and used it moderately (some weeks heavy, some weeks lighter) during that time.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  A Bit Slow, July 4, 2010
By Lou OBLOCK (Cleveland, Ohio)
The unit lives up to it's advertisement. The heating element is enclosed in what seems to be molded ceramic. So although it may be easier to clean (no drip pan), it is a little slow to reach operating temperature and a little slower to react to control changes. Minus one star for that. It is a better looking unit than most hotplates.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very pleased, April 12, 2012
By Chicago Mom (Chicago)
I bought 2 of these burners to replace my stovetop for a full week when I couldn't use the stovetop - it was Passover, and I had guests staying by me for the entire holiday. I cooked everything on these guys: soups, eggs, fried onions, matzoh balls, candied nuts - the works! Overall, I was very happy with them.

Some notes:

A pot of water will take some time to boil (especially if the pot bottom is wider than the hot plate), but that's to be expected.

The hot place does take a while to cool down - again, not a big deal.

If you plan on using it for serious, full-time cooking, then I would recommend getting 2 singles rather than a double burner. Then you'll have 2 full strength burners rather than a full and a half strength on the double burner - also, it is often difficult/impractical to fit 2 pots on the double burner at the same time anyway.

If you are looking for something that takes a half hour to boil water, then this is the range for you. The only positive thing about it is that you will never burn anything as it never gets that hot. There are much better choices than this one so save your money and get a different brand.

I purchased this item for my mother-in-law who is an Alzheimers patient in the final stages. We needed something to keep her food warm while feeding her since it takes such a long time to accomplish this. It has worked excellent since it has a warm setting and doesn't let her food get too hot. Thank you very much.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  It did not last long, January 30, 2011
By Carlo
I bought this burner two years ago for my office. I used it in average twice a (working) day to boil water for tea or make Italian coffee. So, not exactly an intense service. Yet, it just died last week, without apparent reason. The light turns on, but there is no heat. It was easy to clean, but its in-function light is too dim. You need to turn the ambient light off, in order to see it. This means it is easy to leave it on accidentally.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Stopped working after 12 uses., June 12, 2010
By E. Christina Dabis (Near Lake Tahoe, CA)
True, this little hotplate is not very expensive, but still, it's lost money when the bloody thing stops working!!

It was not dropped, it was not dunked into water, it wasn't left ON by accident. It just ceased to work while I was frying bacon.

I wish the sellers on Amazon.com would show the country where the item is made. The one I received has a tag on the bottom: Made in China.

I don't have anything against those workers, but I'm not buying "Made in China" products any longer. Why? Because they break or fall apart. I'm looking for a MADE IN USA hotplate now.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great!, December 1, 2011
By BB
I bought this hot plate so that I could use my old fashioned espresso maker at work. It's has good if not better than the electric range stove top I have at home. It gets hot, really hot, really quickly. And the temperature settings are accurate--once my espresso is done, if I want to leave the pot warm, I can leave it warming and it won't scorch the pot, so I can enjoy warm beverages all day. It's also really easy to clean. I would say the only downside is the indicator light isn't very bright, and it doesn't really add much. If you want to be able to tell that the thing is on, just turn it on--you'll feel it! Lastly, just wait a little while before you store it because it stays warm long after you've unplugged it!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  FANTASTIC CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!, April 6, 2012
By degobahjunk
3 STARS: I ordered this from another website (rhymes with Fall-Mart) on April 28th of 2011 and here it is.... almost a year later & I'm buying a new one. I had used this exclusively to keep my coffee warm throughout the day. I had it set at the "W" on the word WARM on the dial, which kept my coffee at the perfect temperature all day. I usually drink 1 to 1.5 pots of half-caff coffee per day. I have it on a timer so that I never have to worry about forgetting to turn it off at the end of the day (because that happened once before I got the timer.) So it was probably "on" for 15 hours a day, every day. But..... a couple of days ago, I noticed an odd sound coming from the kitchen and found my coffee boiling away on the hot plate, which I can only assume means that the timing mechanism in the hot plate is broken and it can no longer maintain a temperature other than fully on/high. I did think that while it was working properly, it was great, and honestly, the price is low enough that buying another is not that big of a deal. I spend that amount on coffee-shop coffee every few months! For such a low price I didn't really expect 20 years of use, anyway. So, in summary, it's good while it lasts & inexpensive enough to replace when it fails. At least I got almost a year out of it! :)

4/23/2012 EDIT: 5 STARS: So I ordered a new one here on Amazon & when it arrived I pulled out the booklet that came with it & there at the back of the English section, toward the middle of the booklet, there was a one year warranty.... So I called Aroma, talked with a VERY nice & polite Customer Service Rep, Venus, who took my info & asked me to fax a copy of my sales receipt, which I did... and a new hot plate was on my doorstep about 10 days later!!! I didn't have to mail my old one back, no hassle, no fuss, & no charge!!! Amazing! I LOVE customer service like that! I did have to hunt down their phone # on their website since the 800 number in the brochure has been disconnected. But now I have 2 hot plates, & no complaints. :) A compromise star rating of 4 stars.

I tried other brands and they did not work but this one is hot enough to fry, boil, and cook lightly its a great item.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  So far, product is excellent, September 22, 2010
By piesek
I have tried and tried to obtain a hot plate in my home town and none were available.
Having ordered from dentalBookshop in the past, I knew they would have what I wanted.
The product, so far, has been great. I use it almost every day to make ""cowbow-coffee""
I don't know if it was last past the warrenty as most items don't these days, but so
far, it is what I wanted.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Stopped working after 12 uses., June 13, 2010

I wish the sellers on dentalBookshop.com would show the country where the item is made. The one I received has a tag on the bottom: Made in China.

I don't have anything against those workers, but I'm not buying ""Made in China"" products any longer. Why? Because they break or fall apart. I'm looking for a MADE IN USA hotplate now.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect for light use, no good for heavy use, June 24, 2011
By Scott Eldridge (Pinole, CA USA)
We use our hot plate to keep a pot of coffee warm. We drink a *lot* of coffee, so our hot plate is on for about 14 hours out of every 24. We've now purchased (via our local Target) four of these Aroma hot plates, and each of them has died after no less than 6 months but no more than a year. The failure mode, though, is a bit frightening. The gizmo that turns the warmer back off when it reaches the right temperature simply stops detecting the right temperature, and we come back to find the coffee pot at a lovely boil. Not good for the coffee, and frightening in its potential for fires.

So... it works great, right up until it doesn't work well at all. If you're going to use yours a lot less frequently, buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works fine after a month of daily use, June 15, 2011
By Ajanta (Nashville, TN)
We've been using it regularly and every day for a month now. Got it as a replacement burner since our stove only has one working burner. We cook 2 meals about 5 days a week, and we have had no issues so far. It heats up a little slower than a regular stove, but sometimes that's a good thing. We use cast iron and ceramic cookware, so this burner makes it easier to cook nicely without burning stuff.
We don't usually use it to boil water. But we do use a coffee percolator on it, and 4 cups of water boils in about 10 min. So this isn't bad at all. We desperately needed a second burner until we can move out, and this one is doing a great job so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Hot Stuff!, January 4, 2011
By Hub bub
Arrived quickly and in good shape. Follow instructions and let it burn (smoke) off the oil? Anyway, smokes for several minutes the first use. This I understand is normal. Takes a while to boil water but gets frying hot quick. Analog variable control and can be set so low you can put your hand on it but DON'T! And the knob has to be turned quite a bit to come on so reduces chances of accidentally turning the unit on if left plugged in when not in use and NEVER do that. On HI the metal body get hot enough you would not want to try to touch it and you should never touch a hot plate. Enough warnings. Its a good little hot plate.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  My cook stove, September 24, 2011
By Auld Phart (near Chickasawhatchee Ga USA)
For anyody with a very small apartment and very limited space, this hot plate is proving to be the perfect cooking heat source. I have tried 2 other hot plates but this one is proving itself to be the best because it heats fast, maintains set temperatures, cools fast when finished and cleans up easily.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Hot Plate!, September 21, 2011
By Candice K Tuttle (CAMPBELL, CA, US)
I love this hot plate. It fits compactly in my small area, heats up quickly, boils water fast (I have to reduce it to medium once boiling starts) and...it looks smart and clean sitting out in site. I like having the indicator light to quickly tell me if it is on or not. Very well built. It arrived very quickly!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Hot Plate! Opps - stopped working, September 21, 2011
By Candice K Tuttle (CAMPBELL, CA, US)
Amended: After using this hot plate daily for about 1 1/2 months, it has suddenly stopped heating. I love it for how quick it heats, compact and clean looking. I will order another and cross my fingers. If it keeps working, I will return my rating to 5 stars.

Worked great. I bought two for a chilli cook off. It didn't have enough watts to cook fast what needed to be cooked. However, it did keep it hot enough for the entire day. Will buy this brand again

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Serves Its Purpose, February 10, 2012
By LCRay
This hot plate is exactly what I need for a short term purpose. My regular stove died, but I'm not ready to get a new one, so I bought this to boil water, saute, etc. You can't use a big pan on it and it takes a little longer than a regular stove, but it gets the job done. I've had it for a couple of months and haven't had any problems so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent, February 7, 2012
By Joel B
I'm not sure what the complaints are about, this unit works perfectly for me. I use it every day.

Heats up very quickly, just as quickly as an electric range would.

I use it with a stainless steel 11 inch pan, no problems at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Mine lasted three years, April 12, 2010
By Reader (Michigan)
I think this is a good little plate. It heats up reasonably quickly and is relatively easy to clean. I am surprised by the reviews that it suddenly quit working. Mine worked for three years before it suddenly wouldn't heat. I think that I got my money's worth out of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Superb quality, low price, May 25, 2012
By Jack Attack (Columbus, OH)
I am extremely impressed with this purchase. I am a student living away from home for the summer, and needed something to supplement the poor kitchen at the place I am staying for a few months. This hot plate has been essential to my cooking so far. It boils water quickly for me to make hard boiled eggs or pasta, and heats whatever I cook in a skillet quickly as well. I have had no problems with the hot plate retaining heat for a long time after being shut off, or getting too hot underneath while cooking. This hot plate works better than the electric stove top at my old apartment! Highly recommend. After using it, I checked back on Amazon thinking that I had purchased the $50 hot plate that I had considered as an alternative to this. I am so glad that I saved my money and went with this great model!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great little Hot Plate, May 10, 2012
By Denyse
I really like the Aroma AHP-303 Single Hot Plate. It is so compact and easy to clean. I purchased it so I could run it off my solar system. It warms up fairly quickly and stays hot for quite some time even after turning it off.
I also received it a few days earlier than I expected which was a bonus. I didn't realize how easy it was to deal with Amazon.com until my daughter told me how reliable they are.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect for tailgating, August 19, 2011
By jfooch33
I was very impressed how fast this product shipped to my house (less than 48 hrs with free shipping). The product itself does exactly what it is supposed to do and I am excited to use if for tailgates. I love the warm setting that will allow me to keep food hot with out me having to regulate a flame. I am very happy with my experience and recommend this item to other people looking for a great tailgating tool. (Must have cigarette lighter outlet converter sold separately)

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Don't plan on using more than once!, July 19, 2010
By Chili
Bought this to use under a Cameron's stovetop smoker (which shouldn't be placed directly on a glass cooktop because of the corrugated bottom). I only needed a burner for medium heat. I got medium heat out of it the first time I used it, but the second time I used it, the best it could do was MAYBE keep a cup of coffee warm. The third time it didn't work at all. Total junk!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  A better hot plate than the ones of the past, January 8, 2009
By R. Eliz (New York, NY)
I bought this double hot plate because it actually has plated tops (one large, one small) rather than the old style same-sized spiral ones. The new model keeps water and other liquids from spilling into the electrical openings and short-circuiting the system. That's what happened to an older model I had. However, it seems that it takes longer for the large plate to get hot or the pot/pan does not get as hot unless the bottom is actually centered on the plate. I wish the white labels on the knobs did not rub off after only a few times of turning it on and off. Now I have to guess if it is on HIGH or MEDIUM, etc. I only have the light to go by which comes on when a knob is turned up toward MEDIUM and HIGH. Other than that this Aroma hot plate serves its purpose well.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  don't buy from amazon!!!!! only worked 2 months - it's better to buy this item from a store with a good return policy!!, May 5, 2012
By bklyn ruby
We loved this little hot plate, which was perfect while our kitchen is being renovated. I ordered this item in February, it worked perfectly until ten minutes ago. It made a click noise and a small poof of smoke came off of the hot plate. The "on" light will not come on and the burner doesn't heat up!!! I just checked the return policy on this item, and it expired March 17. I would have exchanged it for a new one, in hopes that it lasted longer than two months. The $16 price tag was worth it - as it saved us from ordering take out many times. However, I hate to add more garbage to our landfills with this machine. Perhaps Amazon will be able to replace it? I hope? or the manufacturer? Right now I give it the lowest stars - as it should definitely have lasted longer!!!!! Too bad I didn't buy at Bed, Bath, and Beyond - they have an awesome return policy. If I buy another one, it will not be from amazon.com!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Durable, slow, doesn't turn off completely, November 5, 2010
By Verbatim (New England)
I've used this for a long time--years--and it still works.

It takes a long time to heat up. It can get hot enough to burn butter, but that takes a long time.

The light on it doesn't seem to mean anything useful. It would be more helpful if it meant the unit is turned on. I have covered the light with black tape since it only confuses people.

There seems to be no way to turn the unit off. When it is plugged in and the dial is turned all the way counter-clockwise, it stays warm.

When I have forgetten to unplug it, it has not started a fire; if turned up, it seems to cool down after a while.
