Park Tool Failure, September 14, 2008
By Cramps (Georgia)
|
|
I've owned three of these cleaners. They do a real nice job of cleaning the chain. The biggest problem I had with all three of the units is that they start to fall apart after only a few uses. Two of the units either the hinge point or latch point or both for the two metal clips break away leaving you unable to lock the top to the body. I only use the Park brand of chain cleaner. The third cleaner the actual cleaning brushes fell apart.
I've ordered the Finish Line chain cleaner. I'll post a review of that product after I have used it for a period of time.

Works great for the right price!, January 25, 2008
By Joe (Gettysburg, PA United States)

I am a bike novice, but still want to keep my bike clean. Even using "dry" lube, the chain still accumulates dirt and gunk. Although your chain will only be 90% clean, this scrubber will keep your hands clean. Because it gets so much gunk off your chain, you will need to change the fluid 1-2 times before the chain looks clean. The unit also disassembles well for cleaning (every part can come apart so keep track). Bottom line: it works quickly and cleanly and it's inexpensive!

Works Great, March 11, 2008
By D-Town (Dallas, TX USA)

Very effective chain cleaner. Probably not as good as taking your chain off but it does a hell of a job while keeping your chain on the bike. The biggest problem I had was trying to balance my bike while I used the chain cleaner. If you have someone hold the bike you can clean your chain in a flash. A little messy but what do you expect. I've seen some people complain about it being easy to break but it seems pretty sturdy to me. All in all great product and great price.

It's okay, February 10, 2011
By phil (Arlington, TX)

Like others said, this product works well but it is just a pain to use. I've used it about three times now and it's still holding up well. I have been very careful because it seems like it's very easy to break.
Use: 3 stars. It's not easy to pour the cleaning solution, place the chain in the proper positions, clamp the case shut, and then roll chain. It almost seem like you need a third hand to do things. The chain sometimes snags, then the whole case gets pulled one direction or another, then you may need to set up again. It would be cool if they can design the cleaner to be attached to the bike, so then you wouldn't have to hold it.
I think the main question is whether this tool *really* clean the chains... my verdict is no. Yes, I do see little dirt and bits at the bottom of the cleaner when I've run the chains through many many times. But, when I look at the chain itself, it's still not so clean that I'm happy with. After using this tool, I still need to wipe and brush the chain until it's spotless.
Overall, I think it's an okay tool to use. But since it really doesn't do what it's suppose to, I don't recommend it to anyone.

Not as sturdy as it should be, May 8, 2009
By johnsrinx (Vergennes, Vermont United States)

This does a good job cleaning your chain for the most part. If you use the brushes along with this you can do a good job. This is the second one that I have owned and my only complaint is that is does not hold up to normal wear and tear. My first one the plastic cracked after only a few uses so it wouldn't hold the cleaner. I am trying to be more cautious with this second one.

Probably the best chain scrubber I've used, June 18, 2008
By konaboy (Burnsville, MN United States)

As usual, this Park product has delivered. The Cyclone is well built and has stood up to many chain cleanings. This is my second one but I pretty much abused the first one as much as someone could and it took it well. It's very solid, it does a good job of cleaning and it's easy to get replacement parts for it.

bike chain cleaner, June 6, 2010
By Dan (Wisconsin)
|
|
It works so so, but you could obtain the same results just by spraying on a solvent and using a $2.00 parts cleaning brush. I also found that just spraying the chain with an autmotive brake cleaner works just as well. This item is a waste of money.

Did a great job with Rubbing (Isopropyl) Alcohol" as cleaning fluid, April 22, 2011
By Jim
|
|
I didn't like the idea of using water to "rinse" my chain after using the supplied cleaner so I elected to use "Rubbing Alcohol" (Isopropyl) instead of the supplied cleaner. I couldn't be more pleased with the reults. The chain is clean, the brushes and sponge in the Scrubber cleaned up easily with soapy water. I use "White Lightning" chain lubricant now, but graphite in the past so the chain was black and waxy before cleaning. Now is is "White Glove" clean. The tool itself is very satifactory, I haven't dropped it and am careful to open the clips gently so I am pleased with it. I also removed the cassette and cleaned it using 15" craft stems (long fat pipe cleaners) that fit between the cogs perfectly to get all the dirt out. I wiped the chain wheels off also so everything is clean.

Broke on first use..., April 24, 2010
By Charles Glendening (Pittsburgh, PA USA)
|
|
I've used chain cleaners before, so I was very disappointed when it broke during its first use. It does thoroughly clean the chain, but the clips that hold the lid in place are 'WAY too tight. If you buy one, you may want to relax the wire clips before use. I will replace it with Nashbar's chain cleaner.[...]

Here is Alternative Liquid You Can Use, August 10, 2009
By Carter Hargrave (Tulsa, OK USA)

This chain cleaner is great. Seems very strudy as there is nothing loose moving around insdie that would indicate shoddy design or manufacture. All brushes roate smoothly. I am using Simple Green bio cleaner in this unit as it is half the price at least of the park chain cleaner and it works great. I just cleaned my wifes mountain bike (8 yrs old) never had the chain cleaned and it was gross. Took two cleanings but it is all clean now. My year old trek hybrid was no challenge at all for the Cyclone. I can also see where there would be no problem using another cleaner like 409 as well. Anything that will cut grease and doesnt eat plastic like a pertoleum solvent will be fine. Be sure and clean the Cclone after each use and it should last a long time. Great time saver and I hope this review helps.

Ran it through a dirty chain...works wonders...Well built. The little details help. It is definitely high quality. The price isn't super cheap, but it's reasonable, and worth every penny! I have no fear of its breaking down or malfunctioning any time soon. Easy to use. Very robust.

great chain cleaner, August 3, 2010

This is the only chain cleaner I have ever used and its not perfect after a while the hinges get a little tricky but over all it cleans really well and I'm a real big nerd about having a clean chain. I am on my second one and this one the bristles seem to be dislodging a little too quickly but I just pull them out its no big deal. I have even got a couple of friends to buy it becasue their dirty chains really made me sad.

Save your money, July 21, 2011
By Jimmy Tu
|
|
I bought this item in hopes of an easier/faster cleaning experience but it proved to be not the case. There is still plenty of grim between my chain links although the outer parts of my chain are quite clean. This chain cleaner cleans only slightly better than using a rag to grip your chain only because the brushes would occasionally scrub off some grime so I cannot recommend this to anyone who has to clean their chain regularly. Stick to quick daily rag wipes/lube or take the chain off and use a cheap stiff brush after some soaking in your cleaning solution.

Excellent!, June 24, 2011
By JBG (Earth)

Works really really well! I inherited an older bike for my son and I used this to clean the chain and it works really well, it removed probably years of gunk from the chain and left it almost like new. I also use it for when my chain gets very dirty, as when after riding over mud and at the end of the season when I want to store my bikes with clean chains.
Like one reviewer said, it does get messy, so get plenty of old rags to clean the mess up and old newspaper under the bike. You'll also need a stand to hold up the bike while you're cleaning it. After the chain is clean, I lube it to protect it until next season.
It's easy to use and cleans well, I highly recommend it.

Good Tool, April 27, 2011
By Jonathan T. Cowgill
|
|
This chain cleaner is definitely very efficient when it comes to cleaning your chain, and it seems very durable. Some reviewers noted that it breaks when dropped. I can't imagine it doing so, but I'm careful with it nonetheless. After use this tool leaves your chain looking brand new. All you need to do at that point is very thoroughly remove the cleaner residue with a dry rag and lubricate the chain. At that point you may as well clean your cassette and crank. I've used this tool on five bikes and I haven't noticed any wear on the removable bristles inside. However, when wear does occur, every moving part in this tool can be replace. This is a plus for me, as I would rather not buy the whole tool again.
The only downside is the cleaning solution itself. This first time around I purchased my cleaner from park tools. However, even though it works fine I'd like to find a cheaper alternative.
All in all this tool beets using old rags or tooth brushes when cleaning your chain, and I would definitely recommend it.

Great product, April 13, 2011

I am a four season bicycle commuter. I ride through all sorts of weather, so a clean drive train is something I have to work at maintaining. This chain scrubber makes that task MUCH easier! I have owned this unit for over two years and it is still working fine. The brushes do need to be replaced after repeated use, which is no big deal. Any mechanical device will have parts wear out, and the brushes are cheap and easy to replace. Park Tool makes a lot of good products and the cyclone is at the top of my list of favorites.

Essential tool for anybody who rides a bike, October 13, 2010
By Jdacyclist
|
|
I'm a year round commuting cyclist and I've never really enjoyed cleaning my bike. Until I got this thing. I've never left a review for anything but I really felt compelled to tell other people about how great this is. I've done the whole taking the chain off cleaning process. I thought that it would be way more thorough then one of these devices but I believe this thing cleans it way better. It could be the cleaner I'm using is helping strip away the stuff but wow does it clean it up like brand new. The magnet actually had a whole bunch of crap stuck to it. Also it was incredibly easy to take it apart and rinse and clean it. I recommend that if you dread having to clean your bike this thing will help somewhat.

Cleans pretty well, May 23, 2010
By lagunahillsbuyer (Laguna Hills, CA)
|

I used it to clean the chains on 2 lightly used mtn bikes for the first time in over 8 years. I used mineral spirits as the cleaning solvent (much cheaper than the "recommended" cleaning solution) and 2 fluid changes per bike. It got the job done. The brushes look like the took a pretty good beating even with just 2 uses, so they may need to be replaced fairly frequently. Good thing they sell the replacement brush kit separately. I've seen some knockoffs being sold for less, but with the amount of friction and vibration that a bike chain puts on this, I'm glad I got the name brand.

Works fast, works well, August 30, 2009
By Phil (San Jose, CA)
|
|
I bought this after too many years of brushes and other messy approaches to cleaning my chains. Half the time I wondered if it would be better to just buy a cheap new chain! But this gadget really works and I can say that unless Park Tool comes up with something better, I'll never use another cleaning method again. You just fill it full of whatever cleaning fluid you're using, spin the chain for something like 20-30 complete cycles, and you're done. Also, the magnet at the bottom picks up quite a bit of fine (power-like) metal gunk that you don't really see until you dump the cleaning fluid and wipe the inside clean. The "Chain Brite" fluid that comes with it works well; way better than dishwasher soap or some of the other suggestions I've seen as alternate cleaning fluids.

Works like a champ!, May 23, 2009
By Bruce Erikson (Cincinnati, OH)
|
|
I purchased this unit in a bigger kit for about $35 and have used it six times so far. It works great. There's a bit of technique to getting to run the chain through and holding the device, but after your first time using its a joke. I clean my chain about every 4 rides- about 200 miles or so. This makes it real convenient by keeping the cleaner right on the chain as opposed to spraying onto your bike. The cleaner works really well too. Using a dry lube, it just comes right off. The majority of garbage on my chain is small pieces of trail: leaves, dirt, etc. nothing substantial, but I clean the chain much more often now that I own this. Though this is the only chain cleaning device I've owned I highly recommend it.

Cleanest Chain In Years, January 24, 2009
By Adjusting Fine (Tustin, CA)
|
|
I used a waxed base lube for years, and found that after a while, it the chain will not come clean because wax simply won't clean off with most bio-cleaners. I never cleaned the chain except with a rag because wax cleaners were supposed to "shed dirt."
That was then, before I knew how clean a chain could be. This unit is well made, holds the chain steady with a stout handle, and has little mess compared to using a brush and rag.
See my photos and you can see that the chain is shiny clean after running the chain through. You do one two cycles - the first to get the grime off, the second for a "rinse cycle."
Great tool, great (as always) Park Quality. If you have a lot of bikes to maintain, this is a great way to go.

Buy a Pedro's Chain Machine, May 2, 2011
By nerd-up (Hollywood, FL USA)
|
|
I like Park Tool; most of their tools are top quality. I had a much older model Park Tool chain cleaner back in the early 90's. It was messy and the retaining spring broke after a few uses.
I had a Pedro's Chain Machine: accidentally stepped on it, so I thought I'd give Park Tool a try again.
The Park Tool Cyclone will clean your chain but it uses an enormous amount of solvent and creates an enormous mess -- I hate this thing.
Save yourself the hassle, buy a Pedro's Chain Machine instead:
* It's compact.
* It hooks on the rear derailleur and vibrates dirt off the pulleys.
* If you take your hand off it, it doesn't dump solvent all over your floor.
* It doesn't leak.
* You can use it with one hand, while you are cleaning the front chain rings.
* Is easy to clean, point a hose at it and spin the dirt off the gears.
* Uses less solvent, you control the amount and flow.
* Only clean solvent hits the first stage.
A clean chain makes a happy cyclist. A mess after every chain cleaning makes a lazy bike owner.

I have owned two. They work well, but if you drop them from ~3 feet(the height at which you will use it on a bike stand) they break. Each broke on the first drop. This would be a good product if they simply made it out of a less brittle plastic. It is a tool and tools get dropped.

Adds bristles to your chain, March 7, 2011
By gregapan

|
I don't know, maybe having nylon bristles sticking out of your chain will help with traction on gnarly inclines... personally, I don't need it.
Yes, this thing cleans chains nicely--it leaves them nice and bristling, rather than glistening.
After enough uses, I wonder whether there will be enough bristles left on the cleaning wheels to do the job.
Caveat emptor, big time.

staying hydrated, August 29, 2008
By R. Kruse (Grand Rapids, MI)

These bottles are great to keep on hand at home, at work, on the road, and while out playing. I just ordered two more so I can have one with me everywhere. They are a great way to remind yourself to keep hydrated. The no leak top is nice. And being dishwasher safe is nice alternative to the bottle scrubber that can never quite reach the bottom of some bottles. I now own 4 of these and would buy more as soon as I figure out where else to stash one.

Really works., September 29, 2011
By lm

Excellent in cleaning chains. I use this on my Roubaix Expert and my Trek 7.5FX. I find it easier to use on the road bike maybe because I can lean the cleaner on the side of the rear tire for support and help steady the cleaner. The key is to have a steady hand to keep the chain in alligment while cranking. I use industrial grade degreaser diluted in hot tap water and it works nicely (roughly a tablespoon degreaser per batch). I then give it a couple of rinse cycles of hot water, let it dry and then apply oil to the chain. No Mess.

Essential Cleaning Tool, April 29, 2012
By VladislavTaranov
|
|
I use this on my Hyperglyde narrow 10 speed chain and it works like a charm. Fill to the marked like and use as directed. The brushes come out nicely and clean easily so you can always have a good mechanism to clean your chain. Well worth the money. And about the quality... I had used it the other day and was trying to 'shake' the water out of the inside of the bottom half, and i was holding it by the (removable) handle and swung downward which sent the peice flying handle still in hand... Luckily it is made of quality plastic and did not shatter. I used it again today. (I ridde in the rain a lot)
Long story short, this is a very good product and it does its job very well. I highly recommend. :)

Park Tool Chain Cleaner, March 5, 2012
By John 117
|
|
This item is very good at cleaning bicycle chains as part of routine maintenance. You put your bike on a stand (so you can turn the crank without the bike moving), attach the chain cleaner, pour some liquid cleaner in through the opening in the top (I recommend simple green, but others will recommend other products), then hold the chain cleaner in place with the handle and turn the bike crank about fifty turns or so. You may have to replenish the liquid inside the cleaner if it gets dirty during the process. This tool will then remove almost all dirt and grease from the chain leaving it looking new. Remember to rinse the bike with water after you are done cleaning the chain so that you don't get residue building up on it. If you clean your chain routinely it will extend the life time of the chain. Be advised that you should still replace the chain every 4000 miles or so. Also, note that the first time you use this chain cleaner, it may lose a couple of brush hairs that were not perfectly secured; this should not happen after a short while, though. Compared with other cleaning tools, this is a good one for the price.

Effective once you get the hang of it!, February 28, 2012
By amytee (Washington, DC)
|
|
I tried this for the first time today. Instead of the expensive Park Tool citrus cleaner I used an undiluted citrus floor cleaner by Mr. Clean (such as for mopping), it works great and is a lot cheaper. I learned after several tries that the trick to this is making sure the chain is far enough down into the device so I can more easily pass through the rotating brush on the left of the handle. If it's sort of just resting on top of it, it will keep getting caught up and you won't be able to turn the peddles. Also, I found it much easier to use the chain cleaner with the bike turned upside down; I don't own one of those fancy bike stands. In this position I could use one hand to hold the cleaner by the handle and the other to turn the peddle. My bike was really filthy so I had to refill the liquid and repeat the cleaning process three times to get all the grime off, but in the end it came out great. I highly recommend this product, just have patience with it and be prepared to do a little trial and error to get it to work smoothly for you.

must have for any cyclist, February 15, 2012
By jeff

My riding has increased 10 fold in the last few years and one thing I always hated doing is cleaning the chain. As my mileage increased so did the need for cleaning. I did some research and found the CM-5 chain cleaner, this thing rocks!! I had a chain on my cross bike for only 200 miles and ran it through the Cyclone and I was amazed. The amount of grime and small metal shavings that came off the chain was eye opening. I'm a firm believer in chain cleaners now and I'm not going back to rag and WD40 wipe downs. If you ride more then once a week....buy this.
