4.0 out of 5 stars.  A great surprise!, May 14, 2007
By Ella (From All Over the Place)
I bought this item almost as a joke because it was so cheep and so lightweight that I thought it would be junk. I figured that even if it was useless I wouldn't feel bad about throwing it out because of the price. What I found was that this little set actually works very well. I was impressed with the weight and it cooks a great steak and cleans easily. It packs up pretty small too.

My only two concerns with this product was that

1. Because the frying pan is two pieces and aluminum the handle tends to bend with too much weight. Long term I think bending will greatly weaken the handle.

2. The handle of the frying pan can get a little hot if left on the heat for more than a few minutes. Still easily handled with a towel or shirt sleeve.

These are the prices you pay for the very light weight and cheep price. All in all though, a great bargain that really works.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Complete rubbish. 'Mess' kit is the right name for it..., September 13, 2007
By Robin Miller (Manhattan, NYC)
Quite simply, this kit is rubbish. And dangerous too.

It is so crude and flimsy that you will have an ordeal trying to boil a cup of water for tea, let alone cook anything, and will quite likely burn yourself in the process.

Say you try to boil a cup of water. You use the included tiny, tiny pot with handle. First of all, the handle hangs down at just the right angle to get red hot in the stove's flame. Next, when you lift the pot (using tongs... the red hot handle will burn through gloves), it tips right over and dumps the boiling water everywhere. It just hangs freely from that wire handle and since it's so crudely made, is unbalanced and tips its contents out as soon as its lifted.

After you've burned yourself and lost all your boiled water, you might try to cook something in the frying pan. First you try to assemble the handle, with the screw and wingnut.. problem is that the metal of the handle and mounting tab is so thin that you can't even tighten the bolt fully, so the pan flops about from side to side. Good luck tipping anything out of the pan without a mess. Next, if you put anything in the pan that weighs more than an ounce or two, the handle simply bends. Even a 1/2" of water is enough to bend the handle.

The whole kit is absolute rubbish. Oh, and the handle of the mug gets too hot to handle if you succeed in sloshing any hot water into it.

Don't waste your time or money.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Aluminum Mess Kit, August 8, 2007
By Jeddak (Carrollton, TX)
I wanted a very light, easy to carry frying pan. Anything that came with it was extra. This unit fit that bill. All 4 pieces weigh less than half a pound, but feel quite sturdy. NOT non-stick, but I didn't expect that. Just fry the bacon first! ;-)

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Have owned one for 30 years, March 12, 2011
By Richard Collette (Connecticut USA)
I have to laugh at some of these reviews. I have owned one of these since I started in boy scouts 30 years ago and I take it backpacking and camping several times a year to this day. It bends, it dings, but it also bends back. It's still here and that's more than anyone can say of their plastic kit. It weighs next to nothing. It's not non-stick, but so what. I can take gravel/sand, scrub it around with my hand, rinse it with water and it's good. I have yet to see a light weight non-stick pan that doesn't get scratched and flaked in two years. It cooks on a camp stove just fine. I have not used it on a fire that I recall, so I can't speak to that use. I have a feeling people try it on a fire that's way hotter than it needs to be. You only need some mild coals to do any kind of pan cooking. I still get a kick out of seeing the initials I scratched into it when I was 10, and I still have the original butterfly nut too. The plastic cup that came with mine is only useful for measuring and that's the only negative I have for it.

For $9 I don't think you can go wrong, and you might just go right.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  The best starter kit, October 11, 2008
By Michael A. Rogers (Fort Campbell, KY)
If you're just starting out backpacking then this is the mess kit for you. It's practically identical to the kits Boy Scouts of America have been using for decades. There are a hundred different kits that you can find that will be made of stronger, lighter, non-stick material, but if you're only using if a few times a year, who needs all that?

1.0 out of 5 stars.  POS, October 28, 2008
By G. Risner (Scottsdale, AZ)
Flimsy like a coke can. Bends in your pack. To small to cook the 2 cups of water required for most freeze-dried nasty dinners. Seven bucks down the drain, what was I thinking? I bet it would melt on a higher BTU stove, or with 3 matches lit at the same time. I will recycle this kit when I return my coke cans.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Not as bad as people make it seem., April 27, 2010
By Designer of your Web (Eastern Ohio USA)
I received one of these kits from a family member who outgrew it. I have cooked with the pot and fry pan quite a few times and have yet to be disappointed. Of course it will ding dent and bend if you're clumsy. But seriously if your this clumsy you should not be around fire and definitely should not be camping.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  It is what it is., December 20, 2007
By EnglishUnicorn (Winchester, MA, USA and Swindon, Wiltshire UK)
This is a cheap mess kit for one.
It is lightweight. Not for a hardcore camper, but good for the person who goes 1 to 2 times a year. Compact. I agree with what others said about the pot that boils, but if you make the right contraption out in the wild, you can make ANYTHING work for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  perfect, March 17, 2011
By JV
I have had no problem at all with mine. Any of the problems I've read about this have been human errors. I have used these just the same as pot and pans in home. i've cooked fresh rice and simmered in the cover pot as you would in a home, fried, cooked, grilled and boiled with the frying pan. The plate is the perfect size needed. The only thing wrong with these are the people using them! If you are paying attention to what and how your cooking they wont "melt" or turn "redhot" you dont put this sitting directly on a burning log. This set is extremely light weight, easy to clean, and compacts to be very small, everything you want in a mess kit!!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Poor Quality, June 12, 2008
By Marty From SF (San Francisco, CA. (Hercules)
Coleman products are almost always great, but this is not one of them. Made out of cheap aluminum, it is not sturdy and has no non-stick treatment, so cleaning is a pain. It basically can be used for one person for cooking a meal, but at a little more than a pound, it's not worth it. I wouldn't even buy it as a beginner set for the new camper. I recommend the "Open Country Sierra 5-Piece Nonstick Backpacker Cooking Set". It is treated with a non-stick coating on all sides and is lightweight. You really don't need more than two pots for cooking a meal for one to four people. Always remember - you get what you pay for.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Junk, May 8, 2008
By David M. Tucker
Despite being very light weight, this is not worth the money. The handle for the pan gets very hot, and isn't strong enough. The pot, when filled with water and lifted from the handle, will tilt over sideways and spill water everywhere.

I did not expect much when I bought it, but I had hoped it would at least be functional.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Light, Cheap and can take a beating, January 16, 2012
By K.O (MA)
This was my first backpacking / camping cook set. It was light weight and cheap. Over the last 5 or 6 years I have gotten dozens and dozens of uses out of it. I used this on everything from a 4 week long cross country road trip (my wife and I camped and cooked every night) to a 10 night backpacking trip on the AT.

Over the years I have invested in fairly expensive GSI Cook sets from REI. Although they did exactly what they were suppose to do, I found them to be bulky and to heavy for my backpacking kit. This little kit has never let me down.

There are some cons, but for $7 I won't mark it down. As a few others have pointed out the frying pan handle can get very hot over an open flame. If you put to much weight in it, the aluminum frying pan handle will bend (but can be easily bent back). You can't really boil large amounts of water at once, but the little pot is PERFECT for making soup of pasta for one person on the trail. Mine is pretty gross looking after years of use over an open fire and with backpacking stoves. I have read that their are ways to prevent this, but I doesn't bother me. The GSI Cookset never got gross but it's 6x's the price and less convenient to carry.

Don't expect a Rachael Ray cookware set. This is small, cheap, lightweight, and can take a beating on the trails.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Poor Quality, January 25, 2008
By D Roberts (Upstate New York)
This little kit looks good and the price is right, but the quality leaves a lot to be desired. You might be better off carrying a roll of heavy duty aluminum foil! It is light weight, which is good, but I want something in my backpack I'm not afraid to bang around. Spend a few extra dollars and get something with more quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  This Lightweight Kit Is Supposed To Be Thin, April 18, 2012
By Fred Anonymous Smith (Huntsville. AL)
This is an ultra lightweight, individual, field mess kit for backpackers and similar. The design been around for decades (have used a few over several of those decades), popular because it offers more than the traditional Army individual mess kit. Despite it's apparent "thin & flimsy" construction, it will last for years with only moderate care and maintenance. Dents, small scratches, and scorch marks can be tapped or buffed out. Bent handles can simply be forced back into place (notice none here have said the handles fall or break off). In the end, this kit supposed to be basic & functional, not comprehensive & pretty.

Cooking in the field requires experience and skill. It's not the same as cooking on the stove at home. Temperatures should be lower (coals, not flames). With this kit, each camper cooks their own meals (with their own kit), with individual portions instead of group portions. Heavy foods should be cooked with spits or skewers, not these lightweight containers. The pots & pans should be supported on something when force is applied. Most just eat directly from the pots & pans after cooking. Tote an aluminum coffee pot if that, cocoa, or hot tea is desired. Millions over the years (including me) have done all this and it works.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  For the price..., April 23, 2008
By Colin Jones (Blountville, TN)
Really, for the price, this product is a great buy. If you're looking for something reliable and functional for long periods of time... look elsewhere. This is your standard "boy scout" standard issue mess kit. Coleman has never let me down over the years, and I still stand by that statement. Coleman offers a good backup-quality mess kit for a price not ever worth haggling over. [buy it]

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Cheap Kit, August 25, 2007
By L. A. Beier (Ca)
For the price you can't get any better. it will get the job done yes. When I use it though I find that the pot and skillet is too small, food sticks easily (which can be a pain to wash if camping), it is a loud addition to a backpack and the handles are no good. It isn't a good mess kit, but if you need something cheap.... this one will work.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  You get what you pay for, March 3, 2008
By A. York (ATL, GA)
The only thing this kit is useful for is cooking something in another pot or pan and then merely using this kit as a container on which to hold / eat your food. Sure, it's light, but it is also horribly made. It bends under little pressure, and it got warped after the first use, so it packs loose and falls apart at the slightest nudge.

Coleman makes many great products... This is just not one of them.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Make sure you're alone, August 20, 2007
By mEmond (New York, NY USA)
I didn't pay much attention to the dimensions of the items in this kit, I should have broke out the measuring tape. This stuff is tiny! It might be good for very small meals for one person or child but for two adults its just too small. The largest piece may be able to cook 4 eggs at best, and the pan might be able to cook a can of something as long as its a normal can not one of the jumbo cans of beef stew or something.

I gave it three stars, for three reasons, it's dirt cheap, it probably would be perfect for one person who doesn't eat much, and it all fits into itself in a great little compact item which would be perfect if you're trying to save space.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Mess Kit, January 13, 2012
By goody99
I love this mess kit! Provides all you need to cook a meal. All the pieces nest together making it compact. It is made of thin gauge aluminum, consequently it is very lightweight. More importantly the thin gauge aluminum transfers heat very efficiently to contents that will heat up quickly. Very important when you have a limited heat source. Saves fuel, be it butane, propane, wood, whatever.
One big improvement/addition I suggest to this mess kit is a "pot gripper" handle. The included pot handle/mess kit stay only fits one pan and is somewhat flimsy.
REI sells a universal "pot gripper" that will work with all the containers in this mess kit and only costs $4. Well worth it.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Absolute Rubbish, September 23, 2010
By Crazy Joe
I bought this as I went through a backpacking phase and spent a lot of time perfecting alcohol stoves. I got this at walmart for about $11, which seemed like a deal. The problem is they don't stand up to any kind of use. The plastic lid on the pan lid would get soft enough every time I used it to cover boiling water that it would deform to the touch. Everything bent. If you put food in a pan, it would bend. If you set a pot of water boiling on an alcohol stove, the outer edges will lower and bend down. After a couple uses the lid didn't fit anything, and I didn't trust anything to hold food without causing an accident.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Be Smart, June 23, 2011
By WB
It's worth it's weight in aluminum foil, lol. For less than $10 I think it's a great buy. I have used mine for about three years and it's still holding up well.

Most of the reviews i've read say that it heats up too fast. Well if i'm backpacking i don't want to waste a ton of fuel so heating up faster than most kits sounds like a good idea. Aluminum also cools down rather fast, so when you take your "Steak" off the stove/pocketrocket, the handle will cool down in less than a minute. So what do you do wtih that first minute, right? I mean if i try to pick it up its going to burn me... When i'm at home, i don't just pull the baking pan out of the oven, i use a huge red lobster claw. And thats when the over is only 400 degrees and not over a direct fire.

When it comes to cleaning the equipment alot of people say that food usually sticks on it. Well I agree, food stickes rather well, and most campers don't bring Pam with them on camping trips. However, nature has it's own Pam --> Sand. Sand is a great abrasive device that helps remove debree, and water removes the sand. Both are Readily avaiable when camping.

Nothing in life is perfect. Everything has to be augmented to perform better. This product has served me well, and yes i would recommend this set to anyone who is able to use a bit of logic, and overcome the "Oh-So- Strenuous" problems that might occur in life.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Barely Functional, January 14, 2011
By CFH (Blue Ridge Summit, PA USA)
While the Amazon price is great, this lightweight aluminum mess kit is just not good enough for heavy camping use. We also bought the more expensive Texsport Stainless Steel Mess Kit and are much happier with that kit.

Here are my observations on this disappointing Coleman Kit:

Pros -
+ Folds up nicely for easy transporting
+ Mug is actually kinda nice

Cons -
- Frying Pan handle is secured in place with a "wingnut" and is so thin that it bends with any weight in the pan
- Pot Lid is flimsy and poorly fitting

Not Recommended!

Its a decent kit. A little flimsy and dents from pressure. It cleans pretty easily with water. It's very light and small. The handle of the whole thing is held together with a butterfly nut and screw... My biggest problem is that the nut MELTED when put in the fire. Now I needa go out and get a real nut to replace it. By melted, I mean a puddle of metal where it should have been.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Aluminum is BAD!, January 2, 2011
By Nathaniel Horn (Northern California, USA)
Never cook with or eat out of aluminum pots & pans! Google Aluminum poisoning or Aluminum toxicity and you will see why. It will make you sick and stupid and maybe sick of being stupid too! People who make aluminum food pots or put aluminum in their edible products should be shot.

Stainless is much better! It is more expensive and heavier but it won't poison you! Some choices have severe unintended concequences!

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Way to thin !, April 30, 2012
By Andy (Ortonville, Michigan United States)
I had a boy scout mess kit back in the 70's and it was made in USA, strong enough to hold up to the task it was designed for. This Coleman mess kit is a $10 toy not to be used for real. OK, thats kinda harsh, but Im telling it like it is. This trully is way underbuilt (way to thin). When I ordered it I was hoping it was a great "value", was I wrong !! If it seams to good to be true, it probably is. They will be sent back (sorry Coleman, sorry China ).

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Best you can buy for the price, March 26, 2012
By Ikeadan
So I went camping over the weekend and I bought this before I left as more of a "disposable" mess kit than anything. Turns out this product is great for the average camper. I was able to use every implement to its full use. I fried burgers up in the fry pan, made soup in the pot with no problems at all. The only thing I will say is that when you put hot coffee or liquid in the cup, the whole thing gets ridiculously hot and will burn your hand. Other than that I would sugguest buying this if you need a cheap mess kit to eat with.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Just as it should be, but.., November 16, 2011
By texaspete
The package came right on time. I had a few problems with ups because the package was designated to need a signature for some reason. I live in an apartment and am usually out or in class. Other than that everything went smoothly as delivery goes. The packaging itself was solid and the coleman box it came in seems to protect the set very well. My only complaint is that when i made some tea over my pop-can stove for the first time to test it, the little cup i used to drink out of had a crack in it! about a third of the bottom of the cup has a hairline crack that leaks significantly. This was obviously a production flaw and not the sellers fault. I would like to get a replacement, but it was so cheap i can live. Ill probably try and epoxy the crack. Its not a heat bearing component, as it's only used to drink out of. The rest of the set is as expected, about the perfect size to backpack with. It's not non-stick, but use some sand and water and it'll all come out the same. Decent product minus the defect. But still, Coleman, c'mon.

You'd be better off making a pan from tin foil - which might actually be thicker.

When I removed this kit from the box, it was already bent. All it took was a little hand pressure to bend it even more. It's been a long time since I've been this disappointed in a product.

UPDATE: Amazon shipped two new mess kits but warned me to return the two defective mess kits withing a deadline or they would charge me. They gave me NO SHIPPING LABELS so I was stuck having to pay out of pocket to return their defective products, or they would charge me for the new ones replacing the defective ones. There is no way to contact them besides here. I feel pretty discouraged I want my &9 shipping please...Two of the three kits I bought for my family came without the screw and nut to keep the handle on the kit. I guess my biggest complaint is that there is no way to contact the seller to get those parts except here in the review.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Decent mess kit, June 29, 2010
By M. Deschaine
Ordered this for my sons boy scout outings. I did not expect much when ordering it, thought it would just last a year or so and I was right. Dented in his Teton Sports pack even though it was on top of everything but easily pushed back into place. Everything compacts together nicely though. Maybe in a few years will get a real nice one for him.

I suppose it will work for backpacking trips for one maybe two if they are light eaters, it is compact and ultralight which was why I originally purchased it. Coffee cup is a joke maybe if u only want a sip it will suffice. Id honestly pay a little more to get a more suitable set. This one is a skip, search elsewhere as I am going.g to do.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect for SHTF scenarios, July 5, 2011
By William Blakes
I purchased this set at Walmart for about five dollars. Since that first purchase I have brought four more. This is not for the hardcore camper/hiker. It is perfect for the average SHTF prepper. It's light weight does what it is suspose to do (cook food). It's perfect for an alchol stove or a wood gas stove. I have used on an open jet stove (no pot stand) and cook a package of raman noodles. Like I said before, perfect for SHTF scenarios.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Disposable product., June 28, 2011

The material is extremely thin, wrinkled and scratches easily, makes it very light but easily damaged and the size is a bit small. Not recommended.

Some people may be put off by the cheap construction, for the price this is a very very light mess kit, and in that respect it is perfect! Just handle it with care and you should get years of use out of it....

3.0 out of 5 stars.  ok mess kit, June 15, 2011
By kersed1 (texas)
on the low quality side of the fence but u do get what u pay for. on another review i read someone said it was like aluminum foil i think and thats pretty much right. but this mess kit is usable. u can pretty much only cook small quantities and the handle of the pan seems really weak. if ur looking for a mess kit to last then ur better off paying the extra money cuz this mess kit aint the one. i dont think id recomend this to anyone except if it was for a child or mayBe a Boyscout. if ur not careful this messkit will Break or Bend or proBly get a hole in it in a hurry.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good for my purposes., May 3, 2011
By Atlantic Trails
I'm not sure where other people are finding their complaints. This is exactly what I was looking for, and fits my need of a lightweight mess set. While the material is thin, it isn't overly so or 'like a coke can' as I read in one review. Yeah, it scratches, yeah the handle can bend if you overload the pan, yeah it's not non-stick. I wasn't looking for a set for heavy use at home, just a light set to take hiking and backpacking. I'm using these over a home made alcohol stove and they work fine. No issues.

If you're expecting something of amazing quality, this isn't it. This is okay quality cookware meant to be used and used hard. It should last me a couple of years. This is a cheap set that can be beat to hell. It will be, and it should be. I don't want equipment that I'm afraid to use or stuff in my pack.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Don't pay attention to the pics!, April 23, 2011
By Heath C.
I expected to receive a carrying case with the mess kit, but when it arrived, it was simply the mess kit. THIS DOES NOT COME WITH THE CASE!

Had I known this, it may have affected my buying decision. The mess kit is exactly what it says it is....an aluminum mess kit that nests together. Coleman is a trusted U.S. company, so I will continue to buy their products. However, I will now probably buy it straight from them since we can't seem to get the correct description with a correct picture of the product on Amazon. Disappointing...

2.0 out of 5 stars.  One Time Use, April 11, 2011
By <(o.O)> (Missouri, US)
I bought this product a local gun/outdoor store. It was only $4 and I thought it would be decent to cook a few meals.

They are cheaply made and bend/dent easy.
Once you burn something, the thing is trash.

I suppose you can use it for an emergency in your car.

This was great and shipping was on time. The set is light and very compact. everything is made to fit in the pan. put everything in the pan, fold the handle back and use a screw given to make a very compact carrying kit. the one thing is the pot is a little small but can complain.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Not Bad/Not Great, February 22, 2011
By JadeKiss23
My boyfriend and I got this to take with us this summer on our camping trips. I like that fact that it's small and compact. The whole set will fit nicely in with our gear without taking up a lot of room. Haven't use it yet, but don't see any problems with the set. It's not something to make a huge family dinner with, we plan on using it for things like hot-dog sauce. Also, the storage bag in the picture does not come with kit. All in all its fine with us. If you want something to last for a long time than invest in a higher dollar kit, this should last us the summer and for the price, that works just fine for us!

I knew the price was low but, I was expecting the set to be more substantial. Especially because of the Coleman brand. It is ity bity small and flimsy but, it does work. Just don't get your hopes up that you can prepare an entire meal in these.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Cheap, Ultralight, functional BUT will Dent, November 3, 2009
By A. Disch
This is a great set for UL backpacking at less then 8oz. When i go solo I just take the pot with lid which is less then 3 oz. Make sure to get a pot grabber (3$, 1oz) to pull the put off the fire b/c otherwise you'll tip it over or get burned. It dented in my pack, and the detachable handle isn't sturdy enough to remove the pan when full of water/food (bends) but hey, its 7 bucks! Still haven't found anything as light for a reasonable price so i'm sticking with this. Very pleased.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I love this kit, February 9, 2009
By Camper
I like this product allot. It has every thing you need to have a nice meal in the wilderness. The plate is great because I dump my rehydrated meals onto it so I don't get my hands dirty digging the food out of the bag. Also the cup is nice because If I want Hot cocoa during the day I can put it right onto my Esbit stove. I use a piece of aluminum foil as a lid, it works well. Some may complain that the cup will burn you but that a warning that your drink is too hot all in all it is a great kit That I always have with me in the woods.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Cheap, Light, However..., January 18, 2009
By Clint Malton (Oregon)
I've used this set on 10+ multi-day backpacking trips. It is extremely light weight, compact, and very inexpensive.

I once took a tumble and the set's frying pan got pretty dented up. I was able to push out the dents and mold it back into shape with ease.

However, the set has a few key design flaws that really make it a "leave at home" set. The frying pan's handle is made of thin aluminum and when lifting, the handle bends and will likely spill whatever you're cooking.
Secondly, the swinging handle on the middle sized pot /w lid has no way to lock in place, so when you pick it up from the handle it swings back in forth spilling any liquid contents. The shallow pans and angled sides make it even more difficult to keep contents inside. Lastly, the small mug's handle absorbs heat from the mug very quickly, and then retains that heat longer then the beverage (basically by the time the handle has cooled enough to grab, the drink is cold.) Now, after you have experienced all the flaws, and learn to work around them its just too much effort.

Overall, even with all the faults, its not too bad of a set. If the manufacturer were to make a few minor adjustments to the design, it would be a much better.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Not for heavy use, November 9, 2007
By Charleen Merced (Stamford, CT and sometimes in Puerto Rico)
This is a very light and easy to carry aluminum kit. In fact, it is so light, that it got bent a little in my backpack when I went camping. The kit IS very flimsy, and there is no protection from the heat included. I did not dare put it directly on the flame for fear of getting burned, so I heated up water on something else. If you are going to get this, I recommend that you buy some protective gear: things, gloves, etc.

All in all, it served its purpose, I just needed hot water. But if you need a mess kit to last a while, this is not the item for you. This one does not seem very durable.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Just junk, April 24, 2011
By David
There isn't much to say about this set. Its super light. It doesn't heat evenly, its flimsy, the lid doesn't sit well, the bowl is odd shape, and the cup handle is not ergonomic at all. The one time I cooked it in there was the slightly aluminum taste in the food. It just doesn't really work. Your hard earned cash is better spent on a nice cast iron frying pan, and if needed larger pot for boiling water for your camping needs.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Stupid. It melts!, February 6, 2011
By Niamiah (NY)
I found this mess kit very obsolete to other mess kits I've had in the past. I mean, I didn't expect much for the price, but you would be much better off spending 10 more dollars on a mess kit that really works. This kit MAY work for the young Boy Scout who will only use it once or twice, however the hardcore camper will be very dissipointed.

Pros - lightweight, cheap, kids will accept it

Cons - pot too small, cup too small, too lightweight (it'll melt), very flimsy, scraches far to easly, pot will flip over on itself if you try to pour liquid from it, handle will bend from weight of food when connected to the frying pan

I highly reccomend spending a little more money on a real mess kit than saving a few bucks getting this one. It doesn't work in the real world.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Too easy to lose handle screw, October 11, 2010
By jackjack5 (PACIFIC PALISADES, CA United States)
This looked like a good buy for a camp mess kit. Unfortunately, it is hard to open and close because the handle that holds every thing in, is held by a screw. I found it hard to open and I overloosened the screw which then dropped out of the handle and I could not find it. The kit was hard to put back together anyway as the pot handle didn't fold right. Not a good buy. I recommend that if one purchases a mess kit, that they get one which the handle folds rather than screws together. The handle makes it easy to use and a folding handle is easy to open and there are no parts that can be lost.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Only made for people who know what they are doing., August 24, 2011
By Sharky
This is a very light minimalist mess kit. You can prepare drinking water and cook food with this If you have a controlled heat source like coals from a camp fire or a SMALL camp stove. It is ideal to use in combination with an Esbit stove. If you have a long hike, the light weight of this kit is a blessing. I wouldn't use this to prepare food for a big group of people but it is perfect for one or two people. It is perfect for boiling water. The little pot and frying pan are shallow and it makes boiling cups of water faster. Everything you need to heat water for MREs, Ramen, Oatmeal, Rice, and canned goods. You can also fry bacon, eggs, fish, squirrels, bunnies, and birds. I have a couple of magnets (not included, but I thought up)that i use on the aluminum plate that I stick together through the plate that I make a lid for the frying pan. It helps heat up what I am cooking faster, and I just remove the magnets to use it as a plate again. I use the little covered pot as a container to keep my side dishes warm after I have cooked it in the frying pan. The little cup is good for drinks and sharing a little brandy.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Meh, August 23, 2011
By Caitlin Stewart
It was a lot smaller than I thought and way too flimsy. When I tried washing it at home it started to bend. It's pretty much only good for 1 person. It's definitely not for everyday camping on a long trip. It's definitely cool that it all folds up into one, but I'm a pretty hard core camper and this definitely isn't what you want if you're looking for something to last more than a year.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  GREAT DEAL!!, August 21, 2011
By Trng Officer
I bought 150 of these to use at a 10-day training. They were used 3 times a day and reduced the cost, storage/transport and waste volume of paper plates, etc. I estimate I saved around $1000 by using these instead of paper/plastic goods and will have them for future training venues. They are light weight to transport and stack nicely within each other (the skillet handle is designed to hold the "kit" together). They were washed 3 times a day and showed no signs of rust or other problem.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Little Set, August 16, 2011
By Muspelheim
Bought my set at Wal-Mart a few years back and have been using it every camping/hunting trip I take. This isn't a heavy duty cast iron cooking set, so don't expect it to act like one. Its great for cooking chili, beans, small steaks, links and other assorted "camping" food. The only real drawbacks are that the handle on the pan bends easily and the handle on the pot in useless (if you try lifting it by the handle with soup or other liquid in it, it will flip over). Mine has been beat to hell, I know its limitations, and it never lets me down. On my last trip I was even able to cook using a single mantel lantern and this little set.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  The basic mess kit, May 20, 2012
By allan brill
This mess kit is truly the basic kit. It includes the cup, a tiny pot with anti-tip tabs, the fry pan, & cover / dish. Light weight, compact. I like the way it fits together and latches securely. The ony delta is that it is made of very light grade aluminum. The pan handle is very soft and bends easily. My son uses this kit for scouting.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect, Perfect, Perfect!!, May 10, 2012
By iPasties (Lake Havasu, AZ.)
I bought these for our survival bags. NcStar Tactical Back Pack It's lightweight, it has everything you need to cook for yourself
and its going to last a long time.

If you drop it and dent it, who cares, dent it back.

It's a backpacking kit and it's perfect for the job. If you want a pretty teflon coated set, then head over
to the mall and buy yourself a nice heavy set.

The only downfalls are that food will stick to the uncoated aluminum, so use some butter or animal fat to keep those eggs from sticking.
Also, well this isn't really a downfall but the set rattles alot if you pack it empty. So, fill'er up with tissue paper to start a fire, matches,
lighter, fishing line, whatever you want. It's a good hidden compartment and can hold a lot of survival stuff.

Also, clean-up is a breeze. When you have food burnt to the bottom just fill it up with water and boil it off.

Get yourself a small cooking utensil set too, like a spatula.Alpine Spatula

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Would not take backpacking, May 3, 2012
By Joe C
I bought these because I needed some cheap aluminum cookingware. I thought Coleman made pretty good stuff but this stuff is a joke. The aluminum handle on the frying pan is held with a single wing nut. If you do not tighten it enough, the pan will turn and spill. The rivets that hold the pan on are way too weak, I feel the whole handle assembly sag with no weight on it! The rest of the kit is just as poorly made, I would not trust it backpacking or even on a camping trip. I couldn't recommend this in either of those situations.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Not a total waste, May 1, 2012
By The Honey Badger
I just went on a camping trip and used this product during that trip. I would not use the frying pan or any of the items over a fire. My brother-in-law had a skillet with much thicker metal and a wooden handle that worked better. The problem is that the frying pan handle gets too hot to handle without a glove and the metal warped after one use. I am still going to use this product as a mess kit, the frying pan will make a nice plate and the pot can be used as another bowl. I like the fact that the whole kit is so light and fits together before and after use, and when its dirty the whole set fits into a large zip-lock bag. However, I will be getting another product for the job of skillet for future camping trips.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  One of the Best Personal Mess Kits, December 18, 2011
By Sam
I got one of these in the early 70s when I started camping and there simply weren't a lot of choices. It's been used plenty and I still have it today, except for the cloth carry case which died long ago.

When my oldest child was ready to start backpacking, I went looking for another just like it, but I found the same model was available in stainless steel. As Alzheimer's has been linked to ingesting aluminum, I opted for the stainless steel and I bought two (one for myself.) My aluminum one is still good to go and I have used it some since I have more children coming along.

I'm back now looking for three more and I can't find this model in steel so here I am. As for cooking on an open fire, that's all I have ever done. I didn't buy a little packpacker's stove until about 8 years ago when my oldest took it up. I find them amusing and functional, but unnecessary where I camp. I keep one in the truck for emergencies, but only carry it on day hikes. The big problem is that so many people are using them, real mess kits are hard to find. Everything is so thin, it will melt down on an open fire.

This is a good kit which has stood the test of time. It's also the cheapest kit on the market. You can't beat it for a personal kit. -Sam

I found it "Educational". I now know Coleman moved to China (even though I suspected as much). I will NEVER KNOWINGLY buy anything made in China or any other COMMUNIST Nation. I would never use this product for cooking or eating however I DID find other "uses" for this stuff. As for Coleman Products? Never again.
