  • Many derailleur chains use a ?master link? that allows the chain to be installed and removed by hand.
  • MLP-1 Master Link Pliers make removal and replacement of these masterlinks quick and effortless.
Product Description:
Many derailleur chains use a ?master link? that allows the chain to be installed and removed by hand. While this type of masterlink doesn't require a traditional chain tool, over time, dirt and corrosion can make it difficult to separate by hand. MLP-1 Master Link Pliers make removal and replacement of these masterlinks quick and effortless. Simply insert the specially sized jaws into the masterlink and squeeze the handles.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Works Well, January 30, 2010
By jayb (Seattle)
I needed this tool for quite a while. I can often get apart Wippermann Connex link apart with bare hands after much effort, but I find an SRAM link nearly impossible to get apart. With this tool they come apart easily. Note the fine print on the package where they tell you that you should pinch the sides of an SRAM link together with your fingers as you use this tool to avoid damage to the link. FWIW, I never used master links before preferring to take apart or put together a chain by pushing out or pushing in a pin with a chain tool. From what I've read that isn't the best idea with the narrower modern chains where the pins are peened over after they've been inserted. The thought of 2.5 chains worth of recumbent chain breaking apart under pressure converted me to use master links. This tool makes it much, much easier.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  You can get by without one..., February 29, 2012
By Erik Rudd
...but why would you? Yes, these are purpose built tools, no, you're not likely to find legal alternative uses but really, these make life easier. They work equally well on SRAM, KMC and Whipperman repair links.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect Tool for the Job, June 15, 2010
By W. Mitchell (Virginia)
I just switched to SRAM Powerlinks last year after having several chains break using the Shimano HG replacement pins on XTR chains. I like the master links much better and the fact that you generally don't need a tool to remove the chain is a big plus. That said, sometimes it can be difficult to open the master link when it's been used a while and/or grit and grime work their way in. I've successfully used needle nosed pliers to make it much easier but sometimes they slip and I've always been concerned about potential damage to the rollers. These pliers are made for this specific job and work great. They are well made so they should last for as long as I'm able to ride so I think they are well worth the money. Like one reviewer already stated, if you're using SRAM Powerlinks, be sure to squeeze on the sides of the link to prevent damage as per instructions from both SRAM and Park.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Seriously, November 20, 2011
By Marty (Pocatello, ID)
This tool doesn't need to be precision or solidly built for what it accomplishes. It works great, but so would a five dollar cheapy. Come on China, you could copy this for practically nothing.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Handy tool, February 10, 2011
By Dirty Duck
I remove and clean my bike chain weekly so this is a great, handy tool to have. I used to have to fight the master link but no more!!! Master link comes right off.If you remove your chain often then this is the tool to have. Stop fighting your chain and buy this tool. Note: buy park tools since most are MADE IN USA!!! Support American workers- not the Chinese.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Does the job well, February 3, 2011
By G. Powell (Seattle, WA USA)
This is a single purpose tool and bring from Park Tools, is of the same high quality as their other tools. I used it on several SRAM, and a wipperman chain with no trouble at all. I'm a commuter and I'm hard on chains, so when I go to open these master links, I needed a tool like this to get them off the bike. Before I bought this, I was using shop pin tool to just open the chain up. But of course you can't reuse the chain if you do that.

So highly recommended for the home and shop bicycle mechanic.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nearly Indespensible, August 14, 2011
By Matthew Pearson (Omaha, Nebraska United States)
At first, I hated buying a tool like this. I had a chain breaker, I had pliers, needle nose Vice Grips, all sorts of stuff. I told myself "No! You can open those by hand!" And mostly, I could. Master Links, however, can be stubborn. I had to do a lot of pre-cleaning to a chain that i wanted to remove so that i could clean it just to get the master link to open. Then, finally, I put on a new 9 speed chain and had to take it back off to remove some links. I tried almost every tool I had and wound up cutting myself before just springing for a set of these master link pliers. I don't regret it. It makes opening these chains so easy that I'm thinking of starting to use SRAM chains or at least master links on all of my chains. It sure beats spending a couple bucks on a rivet every time I want to open one of my Shimano chains... Yeah, it's possible to open most master links with your hands or your hands and some rags or some other ad hoc tool... but just buy the thing. The frustration it can save you from is priceless.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Park Tool MLP-1 Master Link Pliers, April 7, 2012
By jay Alan
The pliers work great. Without them, it is difficult to disconnect the master link on the SRAM chains. With this tool it can be done instantaneously. However, be careful not to pinch your fingers while squeezing the master link when applying pressure. With that caution in mind, the procedure is almost effortless. another great idea from Park Tools. Shipping went without a hitch.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Does what its supposed to, March 15, 2012
By DCwom
The tool does what its supposed to, of course you could also fuss with a pair of needle nose pliers to open a quick link if you need to. The downside of this tool is its weight/size, while its great for the bench its too heavy to consider carrying as part of an on-bike tool kit.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Worthy Tool, March 12, 2012
By Golden Tamaraw (Thorndale, PA)
Unlike the trusted pliers which can serve a lot of uses, this tool was only made specifically for one so it better be good at it. Good thing it does! If only my 9-speed chain could talk, it would thank me for finally getting rid of it with grime and sand only a thorough off-the-bike cleaning can do. Very solid material, this would definitely last a long, long time. Recommended for all you DIYers.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  master link pliers, March 2, 2012

These pliers feel sturdy and very well made. I was concerned that it was constructed cheaply and would break after a short time, but this if definitely not the case. It works perfectly and should last a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Where have you been all my life?, February 9, 2012
By Lost My Mind (California, United States)
The Park Tool Master Link Pliers is one of a dozen super-specialized tools that I consider an indispensable part of any toolkit. Hands, needle nose pliers, or even various tricks with wires/zip ties/cables all work fine to open a Master Link until the chain is clogged with dirt and grime. Or the chain is just worn.

These are incredibly easy to use. Pinch the link together (as you would do normally), then use the pliers to squeeze the rollers and voila! Job done in 5 seconds, every time.

By Metalhead Mt. Biker (Greenville, SC USA)
Definitely worth the price, no more filthy greasy hands trying to pry the quick link apart when it's dirty. 10 seconds and it's apart now. Can't verify 10 speed compatibility, but works great on my 9 speeds.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Another tool to add to my Home Mechanic Bike station., November 25, 2011
By RiderLooney (San Diego, CA)
If you are your own bike mechanic; changing over to new chains without the proper tool, such as the one I purchased, Park Tool MLP-1 Master Link Pliers, can be a big pain in the A... Depending on what type of chain you use on your bike, for example, I prefer Sram Chains. These chains have the type of master link that snaps on and off compared to shimano's which use a pin system. However, it is more difficult in accomplishing through the process of removal and putting on the chain without a tool such as "Park Tools" makes for various tasks in doing maintenance on your bike. Chain comes off in seconds which also cuts down the time consumption of putting on the new chain and having the master link properly snap into correct fitting. Thank you Park Tool for making my home bike Mechanic experience that much more less complicated. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works perfect on SRAM chains, September 16, 2011
By C. Truong
I used to fiddle on my SRAM powerlinks for minutes if not hours after a season's worth of XC rides. But in the off season when it's time to clean... sucker won't come off without a fight. This tool is like bringing not a gun to a fist fight, but rather a nuclear bomb. Saved me time and frustration which is in itself priceless.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Another great Park Tool, August 8, 2011
By phillyhouse (Moosup, CT)
As with most of the Park Tools I buy, after using this tool for the first time I was mostly irate with myself for not buying the tool sooner. Makes parting chains so much easier - the chain simply pops apart. Bravo Park Tool!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Must-have tool, June 21, 2011
By Opheliasbterfly (Florida, USA)
This thing is a real life saver--especially if you do a lot of mountain biking. Dirt and pressure over time lock in master links super tight and they are usually pretty difficult to pry off, but this tool makes it super easy because they are specially made to fit in the links so you can squeeze and unlock the link with ease. Just be sure to read the usage warnings on the back of the package before tossing it so you don't damage your link or chain.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Much better than bare hands, May 17, 2011
By Ben Abney
An experienced user can detach Powerlinks and similar chain master links by hand (excluding the newer 10 speed "permanent" type) but it is a difficult and messy job, especially on a dirty, greasy chain. I'm partial to the Wipperman Connex connectors and this tool works very well on them, as well as the SRAM links. I have not yet tried it on the new SRAM 10 speed black links, but suspect it will work on them as well. They are impossible to open by hand.

All in all, a good addition to my bicycling tool box.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Another Quality Park Tool, April 20, 2011
By Timazon (Hauppauge, NY USA)
This tool pays for itself the first time you use it. Remove master links in seconds instead of fumbling with a dirty chain.

Trying to squeeze and pull master links apart is a pain, this tool makes it painless.

Another great quality tool from Park.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Review PARK MLP-1 MASTER CHAIN LINK REMOVER pliers, November 2, 2010
By Gene D (North Carolina)
The Park MLP-1 MASTER CHAIN LINK PLIERS makes removing the master chain link much easier especially if the chain has been on your bike for a while. I think it is too big to carry on rides but great for you vehicle or at home. The price is high but worth it if you link happens to be very difficult to remove.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Useful tool, August 17, 2011
By Robert Sanges (Massachusetts, USA)
I was sceptical of this tool, but decided to get it for use with my new Sram 10 speed chain. I've never needed a tool for the 9 speed powerlinks, but the 10 speed version is harder to remove. This tool makes it a snap. Alton Brown would not like it (it is a "unitasker"), but I am happy to add it to my tool box.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Wish I'd had these years ago, August 29, 2011
By TrikeTrek
I resisted buying these for some time after knowing about them b/c I'm just an individual and not a shop. How often would I need to break my chain, even with 2 or 3 bikes in the stable? But now I'm kicking myself for not having bought them long ago. I struggled for hours and hours on those rare occasions when I needed to break a chain, tearing up the skin on my fingers and doing a lot of sweating and cursing and, the last time I tried it, still not getting the MasterLink open! I had to break the chain the old-fashioned way, with a chain tool and pushing out the rivet, etc. Breaking the MasterLink with these pliers is like cutting warm butter--they make life so much easier. I had thought I could simulate their action by using my own pliers or some other home--made idea: that was a stupid fantasy. The space between the inner plates on a chain, esp a 9-speed chain, is much too small to fit anything useful in there. These pliers fit perfectly and do the job effortlessly. And for the 12 bucks or whatever they cost here, they're absolutely worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Must have quick link pliers, May 3, 2012
By M. Parr (USA)
I really appreciate these pliers, off times the quick links aren't so quick, they get a little gummed up with waxy chain lube and you struggle to unlink the rwo halves. I clean my chain often and now I can do it in half the time because I am not struggling to get the chain off the bike.
