Wiley-Blackwell's Clinical Cases series is designed to recognize the centrality of clinical cases to the profession by providing actual cases with an academic backbone. Clinical Cases in Periodontics describes the core principles of periodontics and demonstrates their practical, every-day application through a range of representative cases building from the simple to the complex and from the common to the rare. This unique approach supports the new trend in case-based and problem-based learning, thoroughly covering topics ranging from infant oral health to complex pulp therapy. Highly illustrated in full color, Clinical Cases in Periodontics utilizes a format that fosters independent learning and prepares the reader for case-based examinations. The book presents actual clinical cases, accompanied by academic commentary, that question and educate the reader about essential topics in periodontics. The book begins with a set of cases illustrating the most common diagnoses and the key decisions and evaluations leading up to them. Subsequent chapters continue in this style, presenting exemplary cases as the basis of discussing various treatment options including surgical and non-surgical treatment, regenerative therapy, mucogingival therapy, and interdisciplinary treatments. Concluding chapters cover implant site development and general prevention of such periodontal diseases. Clinical Cases in Periodontics's case-based format is particularly useful for pre-doctoral dental students, post-graduate residents and practitioners, both as a textbook from which to learn about the challenging and absorbing nature of periodontology, and also as a reference tool to help with treatment planning when complex cases present in the dental office.

Excellent case study book for dental students, November 30, -0001

This book is written by a professor at Harvard School of dental medicine, so it is an american book. Therefore it is not part of the compulsory academic book list for british dental students, but it is an excellent book so is well worth reading and studying.
The book is geared towards pre-doctoral dental students, post-graduate residents, and practionners. It is very well written with clear photographs which illustrate each case perfectly.
It features 37 case studies, covering all aspects of dentistry: examination and diagnosis, nonsurgical periodontal therapy, resective periodontal therapy, regenerative therapy, mucogingival therapy, interdisciplinary treatment, implant site preparation, dental implants, and preventive periodontal therapy.

A good resource for Oral medicine and peridontics., November 30, -0001

I found this book very interesting and easy to read. The case based style of writing helps the reader from the begining to know the focus and aims of each chapter. The very early chapters that dealt with examination and diagnosis and non surgical therapy for Periodontal therapy I think will be useful for all medical and dental doctors while the specific chapters on the surgical management of periodontal disease would probably be most useful for dental surgeons. I found those early chapter and invaluable resource while revising for a recent medical exam. That having been said, the knowledge contained in the book as a whole is an invaluable resource for all medics. I liked the case styled chapters, the vignette styled cases is very reader friendly and allows you from the start to understand the focus and the aim of the chapters. It may be too specialised a book for the general public, however it is a well written book for the subject in question.

Good introduction to clinical aspects of a wide range of periodontal diseases, November 30, -0001

I would recommend this book as an adjunct to a more theory based periodontology text book. The theory behind periodontal disease is not included but the clinical techniques and classifications of a wide variety of periodontal diseases and conditions are explained comprehensively. Each case is described briefly, the learning goals and objectives stated and then the medical, dental, social, family histories, extraoral and intraoral findings explained. Using this information the diagnosis and treatment plan is decided; I found this useful as it is done the same way it would be done in the clinic. My only criticism would be that the cases are written by different people and so they occasionally miss out some of this information, use different classification systems and different ways of illustrating some clinical presentations. For example, different types of charts to show pocket depth: some clinicians took intraoral photos from every angle, others from only the angles they saw relevant. The "Self study questions" at the end of each case were interesting to try and answer before turning to the "Take-home points" at the end of each case. Here the answers are clarified with images, references to the case itself and published papers for further reading. In summary, I would recommend this book to anyone starting out in the clinic due to the way it tackles each individual case as it would be done in the clinic. Even if you have more experience, there is always more to learn so I would recommend this book to more experienced practitioners as well.
