1.0 out of 5 stars.  PIECE OF JUNK, August 4, 2007
By a Southern girl trapped .. (Boston, MA United States)
My bike got stolen with 2 of these locks on it. Security cameras caught a thug in a hoodie (of course, not identifiable) with bolt-cutters. Took all of 10 seconds. They were kind enough to leave one of the locks. In pieces.
If you stole my bike, I hope you get hit by a truck on it.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Good way to loose a bike, February 11, 2008
By science buff (Philadelphia, PA, USA)
My bike was locked right outside my door to a metal railing with this lock. Went out, came back 4 hrs later and bike was gone, all this in broad daylight in the middle of the day. Unlike one of the other reviewers, I dont know how the lock was broken, but if you live in an area where many bikes are stolen, buy a better lock.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  doesn't work, June 18, 2008
By D. Cheng (Chicago, IL)
i don't usually have the time or bother to write reviews, but i just thought i'd let everyone know that like several other reviewers of this lock, i too had my bike stolen using it. another bike locked to the same post as mine with a different u-lock was left untouched.

the lock doesn't work. reason enough not to purchase it i think. i'm getting a more heavy duty one this time.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  It works the way I expected, July 13, 2006
By Wenhui Dai
This lock is strong, inexpensive and easy to carry. It would be better if it was longer, but for my needs, it's OK. I should say, I am pretty happy with it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  efficient but small and heavy, January 3, 2007
By saule (Houston, TX, USA)
I like that lock. IT is very easy to use. It looks very thick and safe. However it is so small that you cannot lock both tire and metal costruction of the bike. You have to choose which one to lock: tire or metal part. Although it is very small, it is heavy. Really heavy. I cannot carry it on my backpack. I got a basket for the lock. Anyways, for this price, I guess, this lock is the best one you can buy

1.0 out of 5 stars.  incredibly weak, September 22, 2008
By Brian (Illinois)
my bike and my girlfriend's bike were next to each other, locked up, outside of my apartment. mine had a kryptonite u-lock, hers had this one (the bell hands off bike u-lock).

we went outside and he bike was gone, mangled bell u-lock left on the ground. my bike was still there, but the u-lock was slightly bent.

the thief obviously tried to get mine, couldn't do it, and went to hers and had no trouble at all. i definitely DO NOT suggest this lock at all if you live in an area that bicycle theft is a problem. FYI - i'm in chicago, so it's not like this is a rare occurrence, just keep it in mind.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  No-frills Lock, July 2, 2007
By Halcyon (Houston, TX, USA)
In a nutshell, this is really a no-frills U-Lock. I am completely satisfied with this lock, but I am aware that much more sophisticated bike security technology exists, so I wouldn't rate it as perfect.

I regularly leave my bike parked and unattended in ***Downtown Houston*** with two of these and two Bell cable locks (one for each wheel), and I have had no problems. When using bike locks, I go for quanity as opposed to quality. Multiple (4 or 5) average locks will overwhelm a thief way more than a single 'good' lock, IMHO. I'm even thinking about buying a third...

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Same complaint as others - used this lock and my bike was stolen., January 30, 2009
By The Iguana (LA, CA)
Several others have said it, but it bears repeating. This lock cannot be trusted to protect your bike.

I locked my bike just outside my door. Left for work and the bike was there. Came home from work and the bike was gone. Only had the bike for a few weeks. I learned my lesson.

I'll be getting a much tougher lock (actually locks - at least two different ones) for my next bike.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  bike stolen, April 18, 2009
By frank n. beans (portland oregon)
i suppose i should be greatful that it didn't get stolen sooner, but judging from the marks left on the only remaining part of my bike, this u-lock, it looked like it was pretty easy to pop open. next time i will spend the extra money to buy a heavier duty lock.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Terrible, September 25, 2008
By J. Hamper
I have no idea how this lock has any stars. The only thing it has to offer is that it is cheap. My bike was stolen right off my balcony in the middle of the day, while I was out doing some community service of all things. You might as well put a sign on your bike that says "steal me" if you use the bell lock. Once I get a new bike, I'm going to get a Kryptonite.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock, greater price, April 1, 2007
By Brian O. Evans
It's a perfectly usable U-Lock for about the cheapest price I could find. U-locks are targeted much less than cable locks, as the solid steel is much harder to cut than cabled steel, so while it is quite secure in its own right, it acts as more of a theft deterrent.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Do yourself a favor and buy something else, October 17, 2008
By S. Tellis
I'm on Amazon to return this product right now. The key is very fickle -- I can only get the darn thing unlocked 1 out of 20 turns of the key. There might be a trick to it, but I don't know what it is. Also, as far as I can tell from reviews (that I should have read), these things do not keep your bike safe!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  solid lock man, June 1, 2007
By Marc Lowry
Pretty sturdy and strong lock. Quickly locks bikes front wheel; when turned 180degrees around; to the bikes frame(I usually lock this wheel when attaching to the bike to the bike rack on my car to prevent the front wheel from bouncing around) or rear wheels to the bike frame and around a stationary object. Also easily unlocks and stores neatly away onto the lock mount which you attach to the bike which comes with the lock of course. Really a neat lock, not like those cable ones that can be easily cut. The metal of the lock is covered with a really durable black plastic. The locks key also has a LED which is handy at night.
A simple but effective, strong and well built bike lock.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bell Lock, June 19, 2007

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Lighted key?, June 15, 2007
By Hankin Chick (at home)
I didn't get a lighted key with mine, just 2 x normal keys.

Other than that everything else is working fine just as you'd expect a u-lock to work.

The lock size "inside to inside" is 10.5cm x 20.5cm. Of the 20.5cm, 4.5cm is the curved bit. The lock's cylinder is 19cm long.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Cheap but no durable., November 23, 2008

It rusts easily and the plastic cover is so loose that it often cover the key hole.

Recommend more expensive lock if you have more budget.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  lock core broke, July 25, 2011
By Roger (NYC)
I'm not sure if this was because someone tried to pick the lock, but this morning I unlocked my bike, then tried to pull the key out of the lock and the lock core mechanism came 1/2 way out instead. Oops. Now i can't get the key out or the core back in.

This lock is about 2 weeks old btw.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Review about ease of use, June 30, 2011
By Bobby B. Ren
As a lock this has served its purpose so far. It locks and keeps my bike and wheels together, and seems relatively sturdy.

The difficulty i keep having with this item is that when you put the key in and try to turn it, the U part falls out. There are some locks that have a slight curvature on one of the two ends that go in that hold the lock in place when you're trying to turn the key. This one doesn't, so you have to use both hands to hold the lock together and turn the key to lock it.

For a cheap lock it is fine.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  BELL bike locks are WORTHLESS!!!!, June 28, 2011
By Raymond T.
I had my TREK 4300 stolen from me, and it was literally right outside my window (18 feet away) while I was home. This worthless lock gave the thief no trouble whatsoever.

PLEASE DO NOT buy into the false sense of security that BELL provides. Their products are cheap junk and thieves know it!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Key Snapped Off in Cold Weather, February 5, 2011
By r. tucker
I bought this lock at a local walmart. I live in Southern Illinois so it is warm most of the year. This past week, (and I live on a college campus) I locked my bike up on campus using this lock. When I came back a day later, the temperature dropped and there must have been ice in the key slot. To make a long story short, as I was trying to unlock the lock, (took about 5 minutes to get the actual key in the keyslot, When I tried to twist the lock to unlock position, the key, obviously not made of the strongest alloy, snapped off. Luckily my friend came to my aid and was able to use a needle nose plyers to unlock the lock, but for about a week my bike was left for dead at this bike rack. Dissapointing. I don't recommend getting this lock unless you live in a warm climate. I think the lock was an update model. It says "20mm hardened steel." I don't know how tough it is for a crook to break it, but if theives don't ruin this lock, cold weather will.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bought this from a Wal-Mart and it rules!, February 14, 2010
By J. Ly
I rode a 20" bike so you'd look like a moron if you'd try stealing it anyways.

Laser cut key prevented common thefts with the IMPECCABLE BIC POINT PEN!

If you locked the body onto AN UNMOVEABLE surface, I'm pretty sure your bike will be safe.

But unfortunately, people will steal a bike when opportunity presents itself.

Great lock if you have a crap bike, crap lock if you have a great bike.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Not great, October 4, 2008
By David Tombs (Florida, USA)
I bought this lock at Walmart a while ago to lock up my bike on a University campus and around. I didn't get my bike stolen like some of the other unfortunate reviewers (probably because my bike just wasn't worth it), but I do still have some complaints.

First of all, I didn't want to use the bulky LED key, so I used the thinner one. This was a mistake. After about a year of use, the lock became rusted and stiff, and after a few months of having to push the key hard and jiggle it to turn the lock, the key casing just broke right off: it's not metal all the way through, and the "head" is just plastic. So, I not only had a really hard time turning the key without a head, but I had no way of securing the key to a keyring. Long story short, it's a miracle I didn't lose this stub of a key for the remaining 6 months of use, and it was a major pain besides.

If you have a cheap bike or live in a low-crime area, get a better cable lock for the same price. If you have a nice bike, buy a better lock.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bike Lock, June 13, 2011
By Bryan Allen (Pueblo, Co USA)
I bought this lock due to the fact the other lock I had like it I lost the main key that unlocks it I had another key that would unlock the lock I figured also you know it might be better to have 2 locks like this it dawned on me why not use both locks I could use one for while the bike is at home to lock it up there and then another for when I am out riding my bike if I stop somewhere I can lock the bike up and know it is safely blocked up especially after over the years of having bikes and people stealing them when I just had them chained and locked so I feel alot safer with this type of lock.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Quality Bike Lock, May 1, 2010
By R. Reid (Detroit, MI USA)
I have had other Bell U-locks before and this one has the same high quality as the others. You can tell a good quality lock from a cheap one by the way the key feels as it turns and also the resistance against pulling out/putting in the "U" from the lock (the lock being the part which the key fits). The key turns smoothly and the U is easy to remove from the lock. This is definitely worth buying.

The only small problem, and I have had this problem with every U-lock from every brand, is that the plastic caddy to attach the u-lock to the bike while not in use breaks very easily. Maybe my bike's vertical frame tube is a different size than normal? Either way it is a pain to have the U-lock dangling on your handlebars.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Mounting the lock on the bike when not in use, September 22, 2009
By Tech lover (Pittsburgh, PA)
I just got one of the u locks. I didn't open the package yet, because the way they show it mounted on the bike would be interfered with by the water bottle. Any thoughts please?

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock, good price!, September 24, 2008
By klunde (Washington, DC)
I bought this lock for my bike, and I am very happy with it. It is big enough to lock my front tire and my frame (but not the back tire). I like that it comes with an extra key as I am prone to losing things. The lock also comes with everything you need to mount the lock on your bike frame.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Get what you pay for., January 16, 2009
By LF (O-H-I-O)
This lock does the job. It is a good U-Lock so thieves can not cut through it. However it is cheap. On one night with rain and then a freeze the lock had ice in it and the key would not turn. I had to twist the key for 10 minutes to get it to work. Not good for use in cold weather but if you want a cheap U-Lock this is a great buy.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Cheap piece of junk! Same key works for most!, October 19, 2011
By SteveSwish
I bought this at walmart at the start of the college school year. Not only did the inside of the lock CALCIFY and RUST so bad that you have to hit the key in with a rock just to turn it (note: the key has bent so bad sometimes its nearly broke off in the lock), but the key works on half of the other bikes Ive seen on campus with the same lock! Bell clearly uses only a handful of different lock mechanisms so forget cutting it... PEOPLE CAN JUST UNLOCK IT WITH THEIR KEY!

Im going with a combo now instead of a key and definitely NO MORE BELL PRODUCTS!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Lock, Carrying bracket is not good as expected, October 10, 2011
By Alex
Pros: Big lock. Good steel.
Cons: The design of carrying bracket is not good. Because the lock is big, if you put the lock in the triangle area of the bike, you will have no space for water bottle holder, and it is a little hard to put the lock into the carrying bracket.
The link between the U-shape steel and the lock is not as tight as expected. It makes sound during riding, which is annoying to me.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Jams In Winter, January 29, 2012
By Jeremy Werner
I live in a low-crime area, so I'm not too worried about someone using bolt cutters to steal my bike. However, This lock doesn't work well in winter. It jams up, and it's very difficult to insert the keys. And then, once you get the keys in, It's a battle just to turn them.

It's comforting to know that if it does eventually lock up, I can remove the lock with bolt cutters. My advice: don't buy this one.
