Quality fender with one minor issue, March 18, 2008
By A. Thomas (Washington DC)
|
|
I got this and the M1 (front) fender to keep the skunk stripe off my back in wet weather. I only use this for commuting -- not for offroad rock/dirt protection -- so keep that in mind.
Overall, this fender is great quality, and is very versatile. The quick-release clamp actually fits over the seat tube on my '05 Dakar FS. I mention this only because it is designed to fit on the seat post, but the mechanism can be "unscrewed" to fit a lager diameter. The main (black) plastic is rigid, but the tip (gray part) is soft/flexible. This is great for when you -- or someone else -- accidentally bumps into it. The design allows you to set not only the height, but the slope as well.
The vertical adjustments lock down with Allen head screws, which is where my *minor* issue comes into play. Even fully screwed-in, the fender can be moved up and down -and- side to side fairly easily. Perhaps this is engineered to keep the rigid nylon pieces from snapping?
Although somewhat irrelevant to this item, I *did* encounter an issue with the M1. It broke at the mount on the first day I had it. The customer service at Topeak is awesome though, and I got a replacement part in 2 days!

Be gentle with it!, April 7, 2010
By Jesse Glaves (Alaska)

I should have known to avoid this item by reading the reviews, but the price seemed right, and it is an attractive fender. So, I installed the fender yesterday afternoon, and to my dismay, it was broken early this morning. I only got to ride the bike twice yesterday with the fender on it. During the usual motion of lifting my leg over the back of the bike to get on, I barely caught the fender on my jeans, and snap...it was laying on the floor. The arm that sits in-between the fender and the locking mechanism is attached to the locking mechanism by a thin piece of brittle plastic. It's a really bad design. On the bright side, I just called Topeak customer service and they are going to send me a new arm, no questions asked. I give this product two stars, because it looks nice, it works well when it is attached to the bike, and Topeak knows that this is a problem and seems willing to replace the broken parts without making it a huge ordeal.

Topeak DeFender M2 Rear fender, April 11, 2009
By Matthew Wilson
|
|
I can't believe that Topeak would produce such a piece of junk! I installed the M2 on my bike and accidentally hit the fender with my foot while mounting the bike and the plastic piece that connects the fender to the seat post snapped off! The fender itself isn't bad (that's the only reason why it got 2 stars)but Topeak needs to retool the connection point on this. I found it odd that a company that manufactures such wonderful tools would produce something so trashy!

This is a great DeFender, April 18, 2008
By Jeffrey Jones II (MARYLAND)
|
|
I have no complaints about this product. I bought it because i use my bike nearly everyday. Inevetably it's going to rain and I still need to use my bike. With this product I can ride in the reain and not think twice about getting wet from tire spray. It fits on the seat post easily and comes off just as easily, without needing to remove the post. In addition, it looks pretty cool. Great product, I definately recommend it.

Rigid and light!, November 21, 2010
By Matos's

Altough the quick release is not so "quick" and you still need to screw it to put it on or take it off, the M2 still much easier to setup than the "defender RX", not only easier to setup but much more rigid, light and better built. Is made of plastic, and if you put much weight or much strees on it, it will break...

I like it, July 19, 2009
By CD (Japan)
|

I ride in the rainy season in Japan. I need something that keeps the bike from throwing water up my back. And when it isn't raining, I don't want to have anything extra on my bike... which means I need something that is easy to install and remove.
The DeFender is pretty easy to put on and take off. Probably less than a minute. And the system that allows you to adjust the slope of the fender is a nice touch. Once the slope adjustment is locked in place, it stays in place. I've not had any trouble with the parts breaking. Had mine for a bit less than a year now.
My only complaint is that the clamp that attaches to the seatpost doesn't clamp tightly enough to allow the fender to always remain in proper alignment with the tire. Even if I use a rubber strip to wrap the seatpost prior to installing the fender clamp, I can't seem to get the clamp tight enough to avoid allowing the fender to occasionally move a bit to the right or left and be out of alignment with the tire. When that happens, it is easy to turn around and realign the fender, but I wish the attachment clamp/mechanism didn't allow this to happen.
Still... the good far outweighs the bad. It keeps the water spray off my back and attaches/detaches easily.

Horrible.., November 8, 2008

Looks great and all, and a cinch to install. But as I was getting onto the bike, I accidentally kicked it and it snapped at the arm, which is deceptively thin and unsupported.

a nice item, June 18, 2008
By James W. Tweeddale

Quick shipping, easy to put the fender on, you have to remove the rear reflector from the bike. The fender will not work for short legged people as it attaches to the seat downrod.

Poor performance, April 10, 2011
By A Reader (CA)
|
|
As noted, the plastic is somewhat flimsy and is not especially durable. However, this product suffers more in that it from normal biking it slips on the seatpost when the bike hits bumps, and no longer covers the tire leaving a ton of spray on the back. Moreover, even when the fender is actually covering the wheel, it is (at least on my Schwinn Frontier) too far away vertically from the wheel (after trying to get it as close as possible and covers too little of the tire to actually be effective in preventing water spray at any reasonable road speed. For an effective fender, look for one that bolts onto eyelets and has maximal tire coverage (Planet Bike has some good options).

Nice look, poor performance and quality, March 10, 2011
By PurdueTony60

I purchased this fender to combat the winter rains of Indiana. I use my GIANT ATX to ride to classes on the campus of Purdue University. On the second day after installation, I was riding to class in the sleet/rain where the fender appeared to be performing its job well, stopping the slush from getting on my back. Unfortunately after about 5 minutes it built up with ice and slush where the fender was weighted down and the bracket between the fender and seat post clamp broke off, and the fender laying in the middle of the street. The attaching bracket also cracked where it attaches to the fender. I was very disappointed and would have thought this "high end" fender would have been better designed to handle this type of thing, especially if being used in muddy situations that are far worse (heavy) than the sleet. I will concede that it was very cold which probably contributed to the failure, but still... I contacted the company under warrenty and they didnt give me too much of a hassle in getting a replacement bracket (the did make me prove the purchase with the receipt which Amazon was very helpful with). It has been three weeks since the failure and i am still waiting for the replacement part, but I am assurred it is on its way from Topeak. (Im sure it will arrive after the rainy season is over. LOL) I would purchase this again, but with lower expectations, such as a rain barrier at best- No mud or ice! Overall great for stopping rain off the tires and it looks killer on my bike with the matching front fender! just be aware it is not very robust in design.

Flimsy build, January 26, 2011
By Dawkinsian

I used this for about a month untill it finally snapped. The stalk that hold the fender is fragile and wouldn't last really long unless you never use your bike. But, it did its job well in keeping the water and slush off my clothes while it was on.

Strong arm, July 6, 2010
By Andrew G. Whitelaw (Baltimore, MD)
|
|
I had to get this as a replacement to another rear that had a seat post clamp with plastic parts (broke after about 4 months). If you do a quick clamp on a rainy morning commute (8mi./day) like I do; ride hard and may jump a curb or two, you need a solid clamp. This is not a technological breakthrough, but a tried-and-true design nonetheless.

BIG and BAD, May 20, 2010
By JBM-V.O. (Reading, PA)

This rear fender is a LOT longer than the cheap one i had before it. This is my third attempt to keep my somewhat dry. IT WORKED! it hooks to the seatpost in seconds, holds tight; coveres the back 2.35" tires with ease. Make room for the suspension give, and go offroad!

Topeak DeFender M2, December 28, 2009
By Rob
|
|
The Topeak DeFender is well worth anybody's money if they do any biking through mud, snow, or rain. It is very easy to install. The grip that clamps on to your bike easily adjusts to fit small and medium diameter bike frames, and with the two pivoting joints, the perfect angle for the DeFender can be obtained. The only tool needed, an allen wrench, is included in the purchase. I am a college student who bikes to campus everyday, regardless of rain, snow, or cold, and the DeFender keeps everything from flipping up and making my backpack and my pants soaking wet. In fact, it keeps them perfectly dry. I would recommend this product to any of my friends.

Cheaply made but does it's job well, June 7, 2009
By Trollnor
|
|
Just about every piece of this guy is plastic. It would have been nice if they had used a few pieces of sturdy metal on the joints for durability.
In the end though, it does what it says. It clips on to the seat post with a quick release bolt which is nice if you have days when you don't need to use it. It's simple to adjust it to the correct angle. For the price, I don't think I could have done better.
I have used it for two 18 mile trips and so far, I have had no issues with the fender slipping on the seat post (or on the adjustable joints).
It's lighter than I thought it would be and performed just fine.
The only thing it loses points on is it's sturdiness of design.
Overall good purchase.

One of the defender you sould choose., February 9, 2009
By Chang Shing-Shen (Seattle, WA USA)

Made by Topeak, this one is tougher then the Air Defender because this Defender won't "flat" itself, but it's a little bit big and heavy for a mountain bike though...
Still, if you need a defender, this won't make you disappointed.

Topeak Defender M2 MTB, January 11, 2009
By Day_Rider (Bay Area)

I was excited about the purchase as the design of this was superb over all other fenders seen on the market, However I was unable to use the product more than once as the material for joints and adjustments are rigid and fragile, and when my leg hit the fender, the joint was shader to pieces.

The mounting arm is the missing link, November 16, 2008
By worldblee (Chico, CA)
|
|
My DeFender worked perfectly well for 2.5 years of light use. Then the plastic mounting arm that connects the fender with the seatpost snapped off when I was making a slight adjustment (I was not applying much pressure; the plastic must have weakened over time). I contacted Topeak's customer support department and was told that it was not covered because it was out of warranty (fair enough) and that I could purchase a replacement part in their store. Unfortunately, the mounting arm is not listed in their replacement parts store, leaving me with a useless fender unless I fabricate my own mounting arm.
As other users attest, the mounting arm is the weak link and that Topeak continues to sell them with no changes and doesn't offer the part separately means they want me to part with another $20 for a product that should last longer than a couple years. I will not purchase another product and will have to look for another fender manufacturer--this spoiled my opinion of Topeak, which had been quite good up to this point. If they made the arm out of aluminum, for instance, you'd have a higher quality product.

TOPEAK M2 REAR FENDER, August 11, 2008
By N. MONTIJO (BOSTON, MA)
|
|
THIS FENDER IS GREAT AND WORKS AS WELL AS THE FRONT M1 FENDER. SAME STYLING AND COOL LOOK. YOU CAN ADJUST IT COUNTLESS WAYS. IT STOPS DEBRIS FROM KICKING UP ON YOUR BACK SIDE AND GREAT ON A RAINY DAY. IF YOU USE A REAR FENDER YOU NEED TO HAVE SOMETHING HOLDING THE BIKE UP WHEN YOUR NOT RIDING LIKE A DISPLAY STAND OR KICK STAND. MOST PEOPLE WHO USE THIS PRODUCT WILL HAVE A HIGH END MOUNTAIN BIKE WHICH USUALLY DOESN'T HAVE A KICK STAND AND THATS WHERE THE FENDER BECOMES A PROBLEM. IF YOU LEAN IT ON SOMETHING THE FENDER WILL USUALLY BE THE FIRST THING LEANING ON THE OBJECT BECAUSE IT STICKS OUT WHICH MAY CAUSE IT TO WARP A LITTLE OR STRESS IT DO TO THE BIKES WEIGHT. YOU COULD LEAN THE BIKE BY THE HANDLE BARS THEN YOUR FINE UNLESS YOU GET HOOKED ON THE BARS AND THE BIKE FALLS (ARGGG). IT'S DEF A GOOD FENDER, YOU JUST NEED TO PLAN THE BIKES STORAGE. I ORDERED THE DISPLAY STANDS AND THE BIKE STANDS FREE AND NO MORE LEANING ON ANY THING. I DIDN'T USE THE REAR FENDER UNTIL I GOT THE STANDS TO SAVE HEADACHES. YOU CAN USE THE FRONT FENDERS WITH OUT ISSUE. THEY ALWAYS STAY OUT OF THE WAY. IF YOU WANT TO USE THE REAR FENDER RIGHT AWAY IT COMES OFF EASILY AND YOU COULD TAKE IT OFF AFTER YOUR RIDE IS DONE SO AS NOT TO SNAG IT ON SOMETHING. I THINK THE STAND IS A BETTER OPTION PLUS YOU CAN WORK ON YOUR BIKE IF NEEDED. VERY DURABLE MATERIALS - GREAT PRICE - GREAT BUY. BIKE SHOPS TRY TO SELL THE CHEAPER VERSION FOR 2WICE AS MUCH.

Too Fragile, Handle Me With Care, February 4, 2012
By bigeugene (East Coast, USA)

Should have read the reviews on this. I bought one for my bike a few weeks ago, installed fine and has held up. Then one for my wife's bike. As with others, hers was bumped on mounting and the connection rod snapped between the mounting bracket and the fender. Returned it and guess I'll just be hoping the other one doesn't break It's too bad because but for the brittle plastic used, it is a good design. I have a Topeak bike pump and bottle mount, and they both are great products, so I am surprised by this. Topeak, use better quality plastic on this fender!

Do not buy if you ride in the winter, or any cold place 40 degrees or under, January 24, 2012
By Myles A. Voigt (Minneapolis, MN)
|
|
I have had many topeak products, and I will never buy anything made from them that has plastic on it ever again. Let me start with the good part. If you don't break it, it works great for a 2.5 inch rear tire. It is fully adjustable, and the clamp has a "groove" so that you can run your seat post security cable through it. The bad part is that topeak uses a very brittle plastic with many of their products, and when it gets cold out they break incredibly easily. I, like many other people, barely brushed my pant leg against it when getting on my bike(so little I didn't even feel it pull on my pant leg) and it snapped off at the arm (It was around 20 degrees Fahrenheit). My girlfriend had this one as well, and for the same reason doesn't own it anymore (It was 40 degrees Fahrenheit out). I have contacted customer support for another item with a broken plastic part and they are good about sending you a new one, but what good is it if it will just break on you again? I am going to buy the SKS Grand M.O.M. because it has a metal arm on it, and I will be posting a review on it after I have tried it out.
