Shimano's recessed cleat and clipless pedal technology, called SPD, revolutionized the cycling shoe/pedal interface. Shimano's PD-M324 clipless/clip pedals continue the SPD tradition but with a twist. One side of the pedal features a fully featured SPD-specific clip interface that provides extra efficiency and security for intense riding. The other side of the pedal, however, features a standard platform for use with street shoes--perfect for impromptu trips to the grocery store and other informal joyrides. The dual-side design makes the PD-M324 pedals ideal for people who use their bike for errands and training alike. The pedals come with one pair of two-bolt SPD cleats.

About Shimano
In 1961, a three-speed bicycle hub was displayed at the New York Toy Show. The hub--an affordable and reliable version of the multi-speed hubs growing in popularity at the time--caught the attention of the industry. So much so that by 1965, Yoshizo Shimano--the youngest son of the company founder in Japan--opened an office in New York. Shimano's goal was to get quicker product feedback and to provide technical and warranty assistance to retailers selling bikes equipped with Shimano parts. Though Shimano American has grown from that first modest office staffed by only three people to a full distribution center with sales and marketing offices, its goals are the same: listen to customers and meet their needs for both bicycle and fishing products.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  intermediate pedal, November 3, 2006
By Larry Kwate (Inglewood, CA)
If you're like me, and don't just ride your bike on dirt trails, but take your chances in the concrete jungle, you need a pedal like this one. Everyone who rides in the city knows, that you don't always get to pick and choose where and when you're going to stop. Cars pull out in front of you. Doors open etc. That sickening feeling you get, when you come to an abrupt stop, feet locked into clips, and the lovely helpless fall to the ground as you try to twist your feet out in a split second. Sure, some of us have amazing reflexes, and can get out of any predicament, but mere mortals rely on a pedal with reversable surfaces. That's the compromise with this pedal. It's more difficult to clip in, but helps reduce those ugly falls on pavement.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Versatile pedal, not perfect., October 21, 2008
By G. Tillinghast (New York, NY)
This is a great entry level pedal for those who want the efficiency of SPD with the convenience of a platform. There are two flaws worth noting though: 1) they are much heavier than any other pedal I've used (not as much of an issue for mtb though) and 2) it is somewhat annoying to have to consciously flip the pedal with your toe before clipping in (unlike a normal SPD with symmetric sides). Overall, a great quality product.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great pedal for a serious commuter, September 12, 2009
By rosco (Chicago, IL)
I ride 15 miles each way to work in Chicago almost daily on a fast commuter bike. I finally broke down and bought these clip pedals after riding on regular flat pedals without cages or clips for a few years.

The good:
Being clipped in makes a BIG difference. More power, feels great.
You can get out of these really easily. I haven't fallen over or had any major scares. The tension was set right already when the pedals arrived.
The versatility of being able to ride either clipped or clipless is great. I rarely ride without being clipped in anymore, but when I need to, it's great to be able to do so comfortably.

The not so good:
A very few times, I've grounded out these pedals while riding fast around a hard corner while pedaling. They do have a little less clearance than a pure clip pedal. Not like it's a huge common problem, but it's happened a few times. Only happens when I'm really pushing hard. Now that I'm used to it, I can easily avoid. But if I was a super-serious rider, this could be a problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Cheaper than the local bike store, May 3, 2010
By online shopaholic (Virginia)
I saved $45 by buying these online through Amazon.com. I received them in 5 days and they took about 5min to install. Just remember that righty tighty, lefty loosey doesn't apply to the left pedal, it's the opposite.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect for touring/hybrid bike, August 17, 2009
By Pete (Toledo Ohio)
I use these on my Trek 7000, they are great for hybrids and mountain bikes. They are pretty simple to get in and out of, and are perfect if you want a set of pedals that you can flip over when you don't want to go all out with the cycling shoes (casual rides to the grocery store and what not).

I've had mine for a month, they were ready to go straight out of the box.

If you want some casual clipless pedals that will make your work-out riding a bit more effective, these are what you're looking for.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works great! Matches with LX. Made to Last., July 30, 2009
By Daniel Haden
They're not as light as the cheaper pedals of this type; however, the spd attachment is top quality and doesn't break.
The outer area of the pedal is a very strong steel. The pedal's alloy core is colored exactly like the LX group, and as that is a trekking / touring group with the strongest materials and this is a trekking / touring pedal that has the same coloring and theme, then I believe that these are LX trekking pedals. As such, that means they work perfectly, all the time, and they're designed to last at least as long as a bike or two.

Worthy of note is that these are a bit easier to access the platform side, albeit the methodology isn't typical. Instead of flipping it or "scuffing" with your toe, you can just pedal "around" and set your foot right down on it when it's up. This is a bit faster than typical, so its possibly less distracting in city traffic. Also, the SPD attachment is quite strong, so if you happen to mash down with a sneaker, there won't be any damage to the pedal. This is the only "combo pedal" that I've been able to flip while going up a steep hill.

As for the weight, this might be the one SPD pedal that makes your knees feel better instead of worse. The somewhat extra weight adds a beneficial flywheel effect to the pedals which can make it easier to spin a faster cadence. That's quite good for training yourself to do well. It also matches up with the intent of the trekking / touring group in facilitating an easier, lasting, approach to a long distance ride.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent Pedals, June 13, 2008
By Jeffrey A. Lee (Carlsbad, CA USA)
I use these on my trike. The best part is the platform on one side, so you can pedal if you're not wearing your riding shoes.

I have about 800 miles on them so far, and no problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  excellent pedal and cleat combo, May 17, 2009
By DesertSenior (Tucson, AZ)
This is second set of M324 pedals. They have excellent adjustment, ease of entry and exit..... The SH-56 cleats are supposed to be an improvement because of smoother edges..... They work very well....

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great--If you know what you're buying, January 7, 2011
By Brian
These clipless/clip pedals are perfect for what use I've been looking for--I can use my racing shoes for when I'm feeling in more of a workout mood and use regular shoes without having to worry about falling over from forgetting to unclip. As other posters have said, they are a bit heavy but the upshot is that they're very solidly built, pure shimano quality. They even come with cleats too! If you're on the fence, get them, they will last you a lifetime or two!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good design, June 20, 2011
By tjsummerhays
I threw these pedals on my Cannondale CAAD 8 road bike primarily because I've never used clipless pedals and I'm new to cycling. While these pedals work fantastic, for the type of riding I have been doing I'm sad to say that I'm already looking for a more road specific pedal. I find that sometimes under the pressure of being at a busy intersection, I have a difficult time getting clipped in sometimes because the pedal has a lot of metal on it and I simply find it difficult to locate the clip. I do nearly everything in my power to not stop on a climb, pedaling uphill with one leg is difficult and I find that I have to keep rotating the pedals to the clip side and then it goes back to the issue of trying to get locked in.

Once you're clipped in, they do their job nicely. I've pedaled pretty hard uphill and I've never slipped out of these pedals. I don't know how the "float" works on them but I've never experienced pain or discomfort because of the pedals. I've only fallen once on the bike since putting these on and it was because the cleat was loose on my shoe and I failed to clip out in time with the other foot so aside from that little mishap they are really easy to get out of.

I prefer to be clipped into the pedal and I find that I use the platform side seldom. If you use a platform pedal a lot a but want to clip in occasionally, I'd highly recommend these. But if you prefer to be clipped in more so then using a platform pedal then I would look at a road specific pedal.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Platform or SPD? Have your cake and eat (most of) it., December 13, 2008
By Dr. Gonzo (Lubbock, TX)
Essentially, this is a good, versatile pedal for those who ride mostly with regular shoes with occasional SPD use. It is a bit inconvenient (with regular shoes) that when you step off on from one foot and said foot is welcomed unceremoniously by the SPD side as your second foot grabs the crank. But if you briefly stop the crank and lift the foot, the SPD side rotates via gravity to the bottom and you simply replace that foot on the now-up facing platform side. The SPD access of the M324 won't be confused with that of a set of Crank Bros. Eggbeaters, it's actually not too difficult to use. I rarely ride with SPD cleats, but am perfectly willing to live with the aforementioned slight compromise in spite of this. Quality is nice.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  great product, January 8, 2011
By localkineguy (Newark, Delaware)
I used to have SPD pedals and just put platforms on one side. The problem with that was that the platform would naturally weigh more than the other side (which had nothing) and therefore whenever I wanted to use the platform, I'd have to use my toe to flip the pedal right side up and then start pedaling. The nice thing about this product is that the pedal doesn't swing much and therefore the right side can always stay up whether its the clip side or the plain pedal side.

These pedals are great! I tried the A530 model, but my feet slipped every time I used the non clip side. I got these instead and they are perfect. FYI, these pedals come with cleats. For some reasons it is not in the item description.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  The product description is missleading, June 9, 2011
By David Simpson (San Jose CA)
These pedals are excellent. The double side is perfect for long rides with bike shoes or short rides to the store with regular shoes. The release spring tension is easily adjustable from tight to loose. It comes adjusted midway and I found loosening it a bit was perfect for riding in the city with intersections,
The product description implies that you have to buy the cleats. I did and now I have an extra set. They come with the cleats.
BTW, make sure you SECURELY fasten the cleats to your shoes and adjust the release spring tension before you jump on the bike and take off. Excitement is no excuse for lack of thoroughness on installation.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for beginners, January 19, 2010
By Joel H. (NYC)
When I upgraded from a hybrid to my first road bike, I purchased these pedals to help me adjust. These pedals are great. I road on the flat side when in heavy people/vehicle traffic, then clipped into the pedals when I felt comfortable. It's not difficult to learn, but takes time to clip in and out naturally. These pedals probably saved me a couple minor embarrassing falls. Another benefit is being able to take casual rides with regular sneakers.

The only downside is the additional weight. The larger platform adds to the overall weight. However, unless you plan on racing, the positive strongly outweigh the negative.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Grippy but not very big, November 2, 2009
By Robert Davidson (Helotes, TX)
For commuting use, the pedals are good smooth spinning pedals and the side last used stays up, making it easy to clip in or stomp away. The pedal is not as long as Shimano SPD PD-A530 pedal set, but that pedal is very slippery. If the Shimano SPD PD-A530 pedal set had some pegs to keep shoes on the pedals it would be a better choice for commuting. Since this is $20+ less, and neither have reflectors, this set wins.
I don't think this would be a good MTB pedal - the platform isn't big enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  simple, quick, time to ride, May 12, 2012
By Andy
i was just getting into riding to help rehab a knee surgery and was riding for a while with just the stock pedals from my GMC Denali Road Bike (also purchased from Amazon) but was highly encouraged from some of my friends to get some clip pedals. i ride around the neighborhood (quick trips to the store, and sometimes to work - only about a 6 mile ride but on some busy streets) so i wanted to have a dual platform giving me the freedom to not have to ride clipped in.

PROS:
quality materials - solid construction, feels like it'll last forever
simple installation - simple instructions, simple installation, quality components
evenly balance - weight difference between flat versus clipped side is minimal so the pedal does NOT rotate (forcing clipped side to always be down)...makes a big difference so that you're not always flipping pedal and then clipping in - can be the difference between that awkward fall, or not being able to get off the line fast enough. HUGE BONUS compared to some other dual platform shoes.
ease of clip in/out - i had never used clip in pedals before so i have no comparison, but i was able to get the hang of it within 2 minutes. stock tension seemed to work just fine for me...to date i haven't had any falls ;)

CONS:
fairly heavy - should not be an issue as the only people i can imagine looking to cut weight on their bikes are very competetive riders who wouldn't even be considering a dual platform pedal to begin with - so not really a negative in my mind.

OVERAL VERY HAPPY WITH THE PEDALS AND LOOK FORWARD TO REHAB EACH AFTERNOON 25 MILES AT A TIME!
BEING CLIPPED IN REALLY HELPS - CHANGES RIDING FROM STRICTLY A PUSH MOTION TO A PUSH AND PULL TO REALLY WORK ALL OF YOUR LEG - REALLY CAN NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE IN LOW GEARS WHEN GOING UP A STEEP INCLINE WORKING YOUR HAMSTRING.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  very functional, October 28, 2011
By Joe Stalin (New Mexico)
These pedals can be used with or without cleated bicycle shoes. I like to clip out at intersections so the two way pedal is very handy. The springs are very tight and you might want to loosen them a bit to make release easier. Instruction for spring adjustment included. You will need a pedal wrench to install and a 5 mm allen wrench to adjust.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good pedals - Bring your own tools, July 22, 2010
By Jonathan Bundy (Indiana, USA)
What's in the box?

Cleats (SH-56) and the pedals. Yes, cleats are included. They're the multi-directional release cleats so if you're wanting cleats that only release one way, you'll have to purchase them separately.

You'll need a 15mm wrench to install the pedals, a 3mm allen wrench to adjust the clip tension, and another sized allen wrench to install the cleats (maybe 5mm, not sure).

Regardless, these are good clipless pedals. Would not hesitate to buy another pair.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Replacement Pedal, July 3, 2011
By Timber Merchant
I have an old touring bike. The original pedals have toe clips. I already had a set of SPDs on my mountain bike, so I decided to purchase these so I could wear the same shoes on my touring bike while eliminating the toe clips. These pedals look very similar to the set replaced. They function as they should and are a cost effective replacement for the original equipment.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Solid, quality pedals, April 19, 2011
By Peter T Bense (Brooklyn, NY USA)
As other reviewers have noted; these pedals are highly effective for all-around use. They give you a grippy surface for use with regular shoes, or a SPD interface for a clipless riding experience. So far I have purchased 3 pairs of these pedals and have them on two bikes.

They are made of steal and a heavy alloy metal -- they feel like they have some heft and quality to their construction. So far I put about 2000 miles on one pair without any concerns.

The slight annoyance about having to turn the pedal over to clip in (or ride with street shoes) is pretty inconsequential. You get used to flipping the pedal, after some use it will become second nature so I find it to be far less of a detraction than what some have cited.

I've been using these since I got them - timely shipping and a quality product. Five stars when they complete a long life, which I have every indication that they will. Four stars for now. As a new recreational bicyclist I highly recommend these as a way to get more out of your bicycle experience, while retaining everyday "ride-ability".

5.0 out of 5 stars.  My Review, August 29, 2009
By Noodj (Saint Petersburg, Fl)
I bought a set of these at my local bike shop because it was my first pair of clipless pedals and I am glad I bought them, even if I did pay a lot more as the mechanic gave me a lot of information about using them and set them up. I have them on my Trek 1.2 and I started using them by clipping in my left foot and using the flat side on the right and practiced stopping and clipping and unclipping my left foot, once I could do that I clipped in my right foot and used the flat side on the left side and practiced clipping and unclipping and stopping with my right foot. When I realised how it was so easy to use them then I clipped in both sides. When you come to a stop just unclip either side to put your foot down. I haven't fallen yet, knock on wood. They clip and unclip without problems. I ordered a pair of Shimano PD-M520 SPD Pedals to put on the Trek 1.2 and will put the Shimano M324 Combination Pedals on the Trek 7.2FX as I use that with different shoes such as sandals and tennis shoes now and then. I also use these pedals(M324)with a pair of Shimano SH-M122B shoes with SH56-PDS cleats designed to work with all open design pedals which allow your shoe to be disengaged by rolling or twisting the foot in any direction instead of just out. I am glad that I bought these and would buy another pair if I need them and would highly recommend them to others..Happy cycling.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great pedals, July 16, 2010
By Jeanne Henderson (El Paso, TX USA)
This is my first set of clipless pedals. I had no trouble installing them and with only minor adjustments to the tension and position of cleat on my shoes, I was off and running. Construction seems bullit proof. True they may be a little heavier than others by a few ounces but when you are considering a 20+ pound bike and weight of a rider, it is meaningless.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I can't slam this pedal for me picking dual sided pedal., August 14, 2007
By Joshua Daniel Martin (Parkland, WA)
I use these on my bike and I can clip in quite easily now. Once I clip my first foot in, I normally spin the pedal and then clip before I start, then if the second foot doesn't snap in I just lift my foot up for half a revolution and I am on my way.

I like the versatility of the pedal and my wife is now going to get them after we went on vacation and I was able to ride down the pool at the resort and she needed to put her shoes on and clip in to ride.

I would recommend these if you want something versatile on one bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very Nice Pedals, May 17, 2012
By DB BluBlock Productions (Maryland, US)
First off, I am pretty rough on my MTB and I'm a big guy, so I put a lot of stress on these pedals. So far they have performed flawlessly. I get down in the mud pretty good, and was thrilled at how well the mud clears from the SBD side of the pedals. The bearings feel great and you can easily pull out of the SBD side and flip the pedals as you approach the steep descents. I purchased these pedals along with Shimano SH-MT23 Mountain Bike Shoes... and you can tell they were designed to function together!

Of course these were easy to install and all you need is an ordinary 15mm wrench. They are a little on the heavy side, but not heavy enough for me to complain. I suppose if you are knocking off each ounce of weight possible you may want to keep looking. They are incredibly strong and I keep a great footing on the flat side of the pedals while wearing sneakers during freestyle and mountain runs.

Really I can't find any reason NOT to purchase these except for the weight issue. Like others said, the weight can help with your cadence due to the flywheel effect they tend to create. I noticed some weren't happy with the fact that you have to feel around with your foot to make sure you are on the right side of the pedal while clipping in... but it isn't a big deal. You can clip in quick enough that you don't lose significant momentum or time even if you have to flip the pedal with your toe. Also, you can feel whether or not its the smooth side.. very noticeable.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love these pedals...Ultimate flexibility, December 2, 2011
By NB
These pedals are awesome. I've been using them to commute in the morning (using the platform side), and on the weekends with the clips for more serious rides.

Pros:
-really nice solid material
-large platform
-super easy to clip into (or at least I found that that was the case)
-looks good on any bike thanks to the great design

Cons:
-a bit heavy
-no reflectors on the pedals

I love these, and would recommend them to anyone thinking about getting platform pedals. Also Amazon had a way better deal than anywhere else I looked, so this is definitely the place to get these.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Super pedals for my hybrid, May 11, 2012
By Eriocaulon (United States)
I bought Pearl iZUMi Men's All-Road Cycling Shoe recently and wanted a set of dual platform/spd clip pedals. I tried a XLC Alloy MTB / Trekking Pedal, Black that were cheap and peformed poorly so the Shimano is my 2nd go-around. These are much higher quality despite being relatively low cost. Certainly they feel a little heavy but for my bike, a Trek Valencia hybrid, it suits me just fine--I am not out to win any races and bike for recreation and fitness. I am new to spd clips so i adjusted the clip side for low clamping. That makes these easy to engage and easy to disengage. In fact, I went to stop one time and forgot to disengage... As I went to put my foot down, it was obviously still clipped so the bike started to tip--but was able to unclamp at the last second to avoid a fall. The pedal itself is rather compact which I like. The platform side has good teeth on the outside for grip. The clip side does not have teeth so did not interfere with the soles of my shoes with recessed cleat.

Performance: Very easy to clip in. Just put my feet roughly over the area of the clips and start pedaling--they pretty much clip in and give you some feedback that you are in. When set for loose clamping, there is some wiggle room for the shoes but it has never accidently released and when needed, is easy to disengage. Going clipped has really upped my pedalling to another level. Particularly with undulating tracks--it really helps to have a solid connection to the pedals when trying to pick up speed on the downhill or pedalling hard uphill (including standing pedalling). Huge difference. Still it is nice to have the option of not wearing your bike shoes. The tradeoff is that I do have to look down and sometimes spin the pedal around so the clip faces up when going clipped--worth it!!!

Overall, I would not recommend anything cheaper than this pedal for starters. It is not worth the cost savings. Unless you are a racer or have a high-end bike that you paid $$$ for lightweight contruction, the weight of these pedals is a non-issue and the quality is very good for the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good alternative pedal, July 26, 2011
By Frank J. Hahn II
I take my mountain bike camping and don't like to have to put on clip on shoes to hop on the bike with the kids. I also like having the clips for riding on the street to power up hills. It is a different work out being clipped in. I am still getting used to being clipped in while riding on dirt, so these pedals are a great alternative.

I have been riding with them a few times now and have them adjusted fairly loose until I get used to the feeling of being locked in. The pedal does not spin feely which makes it easier to chose the side you want. I have now just purchased a second set for my girlfriend.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  ABSOLUTELY THE BEST PEDALS I'VE OWNED, July 20, 2011
By AA
Love these pedals...Love how you can use normal shoes on one side and use SPD shoes on the other side. People complain about it's hard to click on when you click off, but to me it actually seems turns to the SPD side automatically. These pedals actually adds a nice look to any bike with it's chrome look....

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Reliable workhorse of a pedal, June 28, 2011
By SK (Corvallis, OR United States)
Purchased these as a third set to put on our new tandem. I have them on my road bike and my mountain bike, and that lets me hop on anything with any footwear and have fun. I've tried copies of this pedal from a reputable online retailer, but the clip, although it looked very similar, just would not let go no matter how loose I made the tension, and at that point I was afraid to really pull on it on a hill. Also, the range of angle was nothing like the Shimano. The difference in quality was easily worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Just what I wanted, June 24, 2011
By West Cochran (NAPA, CALIFORNIA, US)
These pedals are great for the casual rider and first time for clipless riders. Once I got em' at a local bike shop and they had come recommended from the shop owner.
the clipless is easy to get in and out and given how there designed fairly light weight (500g a pair) I would definately recommend these pedal to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Exactly like the clipless spinner/cycle bikes at the gym, February 14, 2011
By SugarBug
My husband recently purchased a Multisport 360 indoor cycle bike for me that came with regular cage pedals, very similar to the cages used in the gyms for people that do not have cycle shoes. I bought this on Amazon for half the price you would pay in Sun and Ski or Bike Barn. And they're exactly as the ones that the spinner bikes at the gym have. I did, however, take the cages off of the original pedals and placed them on these pedals for my husband, who does not have cycle shoes. Highly recommend!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Question: Do these pedals come with cleats?, July 10, 2010
By Renaissance Man (Varies)
At my bike shop the Shimano PD-M324 Clipless/Clip Pedal set includes the required Shimano Cleats. The description for this item on Amazon does not state whether or not they are included. For those of you who have purchased the pedals - do they include cleats?

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Wrong choice for me, April 27, 2011
By justjoan
I was new to clipless pedals and selected these not realizing that the cleats were not multi-release. I never could get my left foot to release to the outside. After decorating myself with lots of black and blue marks, I learned that I needed different cleats. The new ones release much more easily to the inside and outside. No new black and blue marks.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Shimano PD-M324 Pedels, May 8, 2012
By Turk
These are my first set of clip on peddles. I have a couple hundred miles on them now and have had no issues. They seem to be well built and have taken a couple hits on the curb. I cycle about an hour a day during the week and about 4 to 8 hours over the weekend for fun. I like that the tension can be adjusted for easy release but still hold my foot during the up stroke going up hills.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice Pedal, May 5, 2012
By jdd1361
A little heavy yes. For the type of pedal that is to be expected. Bought a Shimano shoe SH-MT33L. Comfortable shoes by the way. This is my first time for clip less pedals. Used the factory setting. Had no trouble clipping in. I like this pedal because I can ride it to work in my work shoes. I don't think I could ever go back to regular pedals. I do like them.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I love them!, April 17, 2012
By Kelsey (McMinnville, Oregon, US)
I am new to road bikes, so this is perfect nor beginners. You got the best of both worlds: when you're riding with kids or friends you can use tennis shoes on the platforms, and when you're wanting a long fitness ride, you use the clip side. They are easy to snap in, and again, I'm new with this. THey aren't the lightest, but unless you're trying to win a race, the functionality trumps all. Also, I like it at intersections because you don't have to get clipped in before traffic starts. Your cycling shoe will balance perfectly on the platform and you can get clipped in as soon as you clear the intersection!!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  For aggressive bikers on a budget, April 11, 2012
By houstonbiker
The pedels are a little small for many casual commuters or riders. They are dual use and will accept sneakers on the opposite side of the clips, but once you install the pedals you will mostly want to wear your bike shoes for comfort.

I know there are some wider pedals out there from shimano- casual dual use riders may want to seek them out.

But the price was right, and they definatly work as advertised.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great pedals for commuting, December 6, 2011
By RMc
I have had a set of these pedals for 3 months and just purchased another pair for my spare bike. I like having clips on one side and standard on the other since there are times that I prefer not to ride with bike shoes. I am a daily commuter covering about 23 miles each day. These pedals and shoes have helped increase my speed. I have had times where I drug a pedal on a turn while pedaling but they seem be very sturdy and have not had any problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very Pleased, November 25, 2011
By Doyle Hill (Independence, MO)
With me being new to biking, I wanted something that I could use either way. After having these pedals for a couple of months, I am very happy with them. I was concerned that the clips would be hard to get use to and the first time I used them, I was worried I wouldn't be able to get out once I clipped in. That thought quickly passed after a few quick minutes of riding. They clipped in easily and released at the twist of my foot. Would I make the same choice again, absolutely!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good to go!, August 30, 2011
By JeffB (GROSSE POINTE PARK, MI, US)
I ride 30 to 40 miles daily early in the morning. I was finding the puddles and road water made my foot slip off the pedal under force. I replaced my standard pedals with these and they are perfect. I have noticed an increase in speed and stability and overall confidence. Easy in, easy out. No issues when needing a sudden stop and need to put my foot down. And I can still go for a leisurely ride with my wife in tennis shoes. If you ride a lot and are the least bit serious about it, grab a pair - and a pedal wrench.

I recommend this product, cause they are well made and have the ability of being used with tennis shoes as well as bike shoes.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Shimano PD-M324 pedals on a Life Fitness exercise bike, August 20, 2011
By JustBlue
I purchased these pedals to replace the standard pedals on a Life Fitness R3 recumbent exercise bicycle. They installed easily using a 15mm wrench. They are easy to use although it takes a bit of practice to learn how to clip onto them quickly. I use them with Pearl Izumi bike shoes.

They make the workout more efficient because I can get muscle involvement on the back and lifting part of the rotation. I am able to stay in my target heart rate zone with less resistance and I believe it also gives more balanced muscle toning.

To do the same thing with the standard pedals required adjusting the standard pedal straps tightly which was difficult to do and uncomfortable.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Pedal away..., August 19, 2011
By Youth Leader (Pasadena, CA United States)
These pedals are the first time I have ordered and used this type of pedal. They are easy to use with or without cycling shoes. I choose these pedals because initially I was not sure how I would do with cleats and well now I can jump on my bike on a moments notice or plan a long ride with cleats for an endurance ride. I love the pedals either way. I highly recommend them as a first-timer.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Like going from a 4 cyl to a V8!!, August 17, 2011
By Dan
All I can say is, WOW! First time using clipless pedals, and man, what a difference it makes. It takes a little getting used to initially getting your feet locked in the pedals, but once you get past that, it makes for a much better experience.

I really can't compare these with others so I don't know how helpful this review is, but they are definitely a great starter pedal.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect for your city bike or all-purpose bike, August 12, 2011
By Doug Thacker (San Francisco, CA United States)
If you own a bike that you use for multiple activities - running errands, commuting, and maybe the occasional fast ride for fun - these pedals are perfect, or as close to perfect as you're likely to find. I have such a bike and these pedals have been on it for about nine years now.

For an all-purpose bike, it's a good idea to ensure you can get out of the pedals in a hurry if you're clipped into them. For this reason I recommend the Shimano SH56 Multi-Release SPD cleats. Unlike other SPD cleats, which require you to turn your heel outward in order to release, the SH56 cleats allow you to release by turning your heel out, in, or up. (The engagement of cleat with pedal is still secure, and can be made tighter if need be.) These are especially useful if you're just getting used to clipless pedals, but work well for everyone who frequently finds themselves in lots of stop and go traffic (as you would on an all-purpose bike).

I've seen some reviewers say that you have to flip the pedal around in order to clip into it, but in fact the brilliant thing about these pedals is that if you just lift your foot for a moment, the pedal will present its clip-in side to you and you can clip right in. They are designed to do that. And on days when you're in flip-flops or trainers, flipping the pedal over to its flat side is quick and easy.

You can put these Shimano pedals on your bike and forget about them. They are what an all-purpose bike pedal should be.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Exactly what I wanted, August 12, 2011
By Leighton
Platform side works great when I just want to throw on a pair of sneakers and pedal around the city or ride somewhere in town.

Clipless side works great when I want to hit a trail and want to clip in for a stronger more serious ride.

It takes a tiny bit more coordination to flip the pedals to the right side up while riding, but that's part of the design, and really isn't too difficult once you get the hang of it.

I have a trike and need the clips but to go to the store the other side works just fine. It is the solution I had hoped for. Now when I go to the hardware I can wear my street shoes and not my day glow bike shoes, the stares I used to get from the people there. A good choice for all.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Half clip/half platform, May 31, 2011
By N. Young (Boston, MA)
I bought these last year and it was my first experience with clipless pedals. It really is nice for more passive riders to have these as a quick option if you just want to jump on your bike for a quick ride with regular tennis shoes, while giving you the option to clip in with SPD cleats. It takes some getting used to for us newbies, but overall it's been a great experience. Sometimes they can be a bit tough to clip in, so when I am riding in heavy city traffic in Boston, I sometimes leave my left shoe unclipped.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Gives You Options!, May 31, 2011
By Yellerlab
These pedals are just what we needed. I bought them for the whole family. If we are just going to ride around the neighborhood or up to the store, one side of the pedal accomodates whatever shoes we are wearing. If we are going to go on a long ride and want to wear our cycling shoes and clip in, the other side of the pedal works for that. They are very versatile. If you are worried about weight, aerodynamics, what they are made of etc... you probably aren't looking for this kind of pedal anyways. If you want options these definitely give you that.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Shimano PD-M324 clipless/clip pedals, May 28, 2011
By swiftylaz
These are great clipless pedals for someone like me who is new to clipless bicycling. Great platform and easy to get in and out of. One side for your "clipless" bicycling shoes and one side for ordinary shoes. I was pleasantly surprised how fast I got used to clipping in and out at stops. If you are on the fence about going with clipless pedals and shoes this is a great way to go.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesome Pedals, May 20, 2011
By Donovan386
Great pedals. Very easy to install and very easy to use. I came from using standard black plastic pedals to these and it was night and day difference. The grip is superior even when not clipped in and clipped in, these pedals are amazing. They're sometimes a little difficult because you have the clip on only one side but once you get used to that, they're great.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Leap of Faith, April 19, 2011
By John (Illinois, USA)
Shimano PD-M324 Clipless/Clip Pedals
I am a senior and have been road biking for a little over a year. I decided to make a leap of faith and go to clipless pedals. "Friends" lent encouragment by saying everyone falls. I finally decided on the M324 pedals. I liked the idea that after a stop I could start up by pedaling on either side with a firm stroke. After getting through an intersection the pedal easily flips over and clipping in is almost effortless. The trick is to adjust the pedal so that you are not clipped in real tight. I have now gone over 100 miles and not fallen once. Just remember to unclip the same foot each time when slowing down. Great product for beginners who want to go "clipless"

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Half clipless/half platform, April 5, 2011
By Vankas
I got these as a "training wheel" for my entry into the clip-less riding world. As with most pedals, these are easily installed with just a wrench. These take a little more thought (read: some) at the beginning of a ride to get the desired side-up but once oriented I almost never have to re-orient the pedals during a ride even while clipping and unclipping. If they're let rest my pedals will tilt so that the back of the cleat-bracket is down. I can't speak to durability since I've only ridden them about 50 miles but they seem solid and don't show any wear so far.

TLDR: These are heavy, well-built, easily installed and work well.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  First Pair clip pedals.., January 27, 2011
By tk414
This was my first pair of clipless pedals, I liked the idea I could use with or without the clips. This pedal was suggested as a good first clip style pedal by several local bike shops, however they were double the price in store.

They arrived and I couldnt be more pleased. Easing the tension made it very easy to get in and out of the clips, which has help on the learning curve. Great Pedals.

They do come with the cleats, this wasn't clear when I ordered mine. Ready for a second pair for my other bike..

(I did have to buy a bike pedal wrench to get the orig. pedals off my other bike, regular pliers wouldnt do the job)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  City ride best choice, September 29, 2010
By David Jeswald (Pittsburgh, Pa)
I recently purchased a set of Shimano PD-M324 pedals, with multidirectional clips, for stop and go road bike rides in the city. They've been much easier to clip in and out than my Look Keo classics and still provide the hold I need for full power. For city rides, I'd recommend them as the best choice and well worth the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good first pedals, September 11, 2010
By tsco
These are my first "clipless" pedals and I'm very happy with them. I have them set almost to the easiest/weakest tension and they are very easy to clip out (no falls yet!). They are generally easy to clip in but I occasionally have trouble finding the right spot, especially with the first side (left for me). The pedal doesn't always fall "clip in" side up so I occasionally have to flip it over as I start. On the other hand I really like having the option of a flat pedal. I am using them on my only bike, which is a road bike. They are a little heavy but I'm mostly commuting not racing. There is definitely some float. If I set them to the weakest tension the float makes it feel like they could clip out unintentionally. Setting them slightly tighter fixed the problem without making it hard to get out. Aside from these minor cons these have been great first time clipless pedals. I am very comfortable with the SPD system. Now I can do longer rides without tiring so much.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Shimano PD-M324 Pedals, August 29, 2010
By Jenny (Massachusetts)
I decided to make the switch from regular pedals, to those that I could clip into, but still wanted the flexibility to wear regular shoes if I wanted to. These pedals seem to be the perfect solution. They are definitely a step up in quality from the plastic pedals that came on my bike. I had them installed for $5 at my local bike shop, so I cannot speak for the ease of installation. However, I did adjust the spring tension for clipping in, and found it to be quite easy with the directions. You can adjust them so that they are either very easy to clip in and out of, or harder. I adjusted them on the "loose" side since I am a beginner and may tighten them up just a bit. I find they are easy to clip into, my cleats literally fall right in to place, and they are easy to get out of, and yet don't release when you don't want them to, say going up a steep hill. Knock on wood, I didn't have any beginners fall not being able to release from them in time for an unexpected stop because they're so easy to get out of. Highly recommended for those who want a versatile, high quality pedal you can use either with cleated bike shoes or regular shoes for a casual ride. Great price on Amazon too!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Enthusiastic Commuter Pedal, July 11, 2010
By D. Pennington (Sherwood, OR USA)
-Solid, polished, quality Shimano product. Both the clip side and the flat side have a great feel. The flat has good grip but not grabby, you can easily reposition your foot. The clip-in is respectively solid and the float (side to side) movement is like other Shimano SPD pedals, enough to not feel locked in.

I have these pedals on my daily commuter bike. On the quick jaunt to work I use the flat side, but when I want to go for longer ride, maybe with some hills or fast stretches I'll use SPD shoes and clip in.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Pedal for an Urban Ride, June 13, 2010
By ColoradoSkier (Denver, CO)
This pedal is great for an Urban Bike ride where you have to stop frequently. Even while wearing the SPD shoes, you can flip the pedal over and use the platform side in areas where you will need to stop frequently, and not need to clip in and out. Great for the urban commute.

The down side is that it is heavier than a road pedal SPD-SL, but I just swap the pedals out when I am going on a long distance ride.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect for fitness equipment!, May 31, 2010
By R. Smith (Michigan)
The perfect pedal for fitness bikes. Really.

Supports the 'wanna bees' and their clipless shoes and the 'utilitarian crankers' that just want to get it done.

Smooth, light, beautiful, capable... A nice pedal. Sure there are lighter pedals (but you aren't road racing a spinner bike). There are prettier pedals out there too but for a spinner bike, this allows two people with different needs or likes in equipment to use the same bike. Like my wife loves clip pedals and I hate them. Problem solved and these were about half the cost of the OEM pedals from the manufacturer. SCORE!!!

By foyleman
Excellent product. Just what I needed.
I can wear sneakers when going out for a leisure ride or strap on more serious shoes for a great workout.

I will mention that after a few hundred miles of trail riding it feels that a bearing in one of the pedals has a burr... but I am going to blame that on my rougher riding than on the product itself. I would still recommend these pedals.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great replacement pedal, September 11, 2011
By Terrence
I decided that it was time to get back into riding but wanted to make sure to upgrade some of the components on my Trek 7.5 FX bike, including my pedals, saddle and grips. I opted for the dual platform pedal because eventually I would like to learn to ride using the clipless feature, but I also wanted the security of having a platform feature in the meantime. After doing a lot of research and reading the reviews on Amazon, I decided to purchase the Shimano PD-M324 Clipless/Clip Pedals. Although I have not tried the clipless feature I can say the platform side is excellent. There is a noticeable difference between the pedals that came with the bike (which were pretty flimsy) and these. The platform side is wider than my old pedals which is an improvement. The pedals are slightly heavier but for me this is not an issue but a plus as my feet feel more secure. I am looking forward to purchasing a pair of clipless shoes to try out the clipless feature. In the meantime, I am very pleased with my purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good pedals, for the money, September 5, 2011
By Benfica pr'a sempre! (Cincinnati, OH)
I bought these to replace a set of pedals with bad bearings (they went out after almost 10 years of service), and I figured I'd get myself halfway into the clipless pedals club, so these appeared to be a decent compromise. They're a little bit heavy, which in my world just means that they're really sturdy and solidly built, but I suppose there might be people out there who are trying to keep their bike weight down for those races, and these wouldn't be a great bet for that. Installation was easy, and I used these for about a month before getting shoes that would allow me to clip in, experiencing very little annoyance at having to occasionally flip the pedals to get onto the platform side. Now that I have installed the included clips on my new shoes, I noticed that one of the little brackets included with the hardware doesn't allow the screw heads to sit flush, meaning that they would scrape pretty heavily on the ground if I were to walk around a lot. I'm trying to track down a replacement set of those things, but I do find it curious that one bracket is fine and the other isn't. Maybe this is how they keep the price down. Getting the clip side up has been a little bit more challenging than it was to get the platform side up, so I'm glad I can ride more-or-less comfortably with either side up, at least for short distances. I haven't taken the clipless setup on a long ride yet, but I'm hoping this will cure some foot numbness that I'd been experiencing on 20 mile rides. If not, I suppose I'll be hunting down a new seat next month!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very Useful Pedals!, May 8, 2012
By bill
I ordered these as an alternative to using my clip-in pedals all the time.

I like to quickly transition from road bike to running and running to road bike. These give me the option of just riding in my running shoes vs having to put on or take off my clip-in cycle shoes. Also nice for spur of the moment rides! (I have already started logging more miles by simply being able to hop on and go!)

They are heavier than my clip-ins 1 lb total vs a few ounces) but frankly if I am worried about extra weight for a long ride I can simply put the other ones back on! And the extra weight is good for day to day training anyway!

I was very pleased to find the clip pieces to attached to my shoes included!

I did hit/scape a pedal while making a fast and too tight turn and am happy to report that other than a little scrape there was no other damage to the pedal (or rider!)

No complaints at all about the value, usefulness or ease of installation!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Solid. Safe. Success, April 28, 2012
By 22
Simply put. I made an attempt at riding clip less crank bro. 8 years ago and got into a few dangerous jams. I gave up the idea until a recent investment of a new salsa fargo mtb touring bike with a street set up. I'm more a commuter but like the feel of long days on a mtb frame. With that said, I Purchased these pedals hoping to regain confidence. At the price. Why not. My cranks were 100 bucks and useless. These pedals Are perfect.

Easy in easy out. Dual side is efficient. My confidence is restored by how easy it is to adjust them. I dont think I'll ever ride without these pedals again.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love these Pedals!, April 27, 2012
By GunnyL (Savannah, TX)
I have been using SPD Pedals for over 10 years.
I just swapped out to this set so that I can use regular shoes when I need to and they have performed better than predicted! My other SPD Pedals were straight clipin pedals on both sides. I like that I now have the option of using either my bike shoes or regular shoes when I want to tool around with the kids and head to the park for some ball.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  great 3 season pedal, February 14, 2012
By jwcutler
I bought these to use while I am getting used to going clipless on my new MTB. They work well but I needed to switch back to platform pedals until warmer weather as they fill up with snow and slush which turns to ice resulting in the clip side being impossible to get into. When the ice is gone this will obviously not be an issue.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for commuting, January 15, 2012
By Fern
I just got this and have been on one short ride so far. I'm replacing my shimano spd road pedals as I have only one bike that is both for commuting and for longer rides. The versatility of this pedal is something I'm appreciating (i.e. no shoes with cleats necessary on commuting days). However, it weighs about three times as much as the road pedals I'm replacing. Also, I felt clipping in and out of the pedal requires a lot more effort than my previous pedals (I haven't adjusted the spring tension on any of the pedals, including the new one). I'm using the single release cleats (black) than the multiple release cleats (silver) that came with the pedals and would probably be a bit easier to use. Since this is a shimano, I assume it comes with at least a year's warranty, but having a hard time finding it on the manual provided.

Update (after a month of use): Still to adjust clip spring tension, but am really enjoying the comfort of the wider surface of the pedal when not using bike shoes. This little bit of extra comfort is much appreciated since my legs are very tired from increased running mileage. I haven't noticed the extra weight of these pedals compared to the small SPD pedals since the first ride!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice hybrid pedals., November 5, 2011
By N. Luchsinger (Seattle, Washington)
If you want to use your pedals without clipless shoes on occasion while still having great traction, these are what you want. Both sides of the pedal are pretty usable without clipless shoes. I'm no expert on quality and performance, but these seem more than adequate for anyone who doesn't do lots of super-competitive rides, and they're very practical for actual commuting.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love 'em!, October 25, 2011

These pedals are great with your regular athletic shoes and your bike shoes. Love how they were with the regular shoes with no slip. Easy to connect foot to either side of pedal as needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great pedals, October 9, 2011
By Robert Giddens
Purchased these pedals as a transition from regular pedals. The thought was that if I get in a tight spot could just ride on out... Works great so far.. Going clipless was much eaiser than I expected. Great pedals. Box description indicates multi release cleats so you don't need to purchase those separately...

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Does a good job at both, just not great, October 4, 2011
By Justin Winokur
This pedal is a compromise between a fully clipless set and flat platform pedals. As such, you do compromise a bit for both functions. When riding on the platform, I have to consciously flip it when I start and even then, sometimes I miss and I have to press on the wrong side to get moving. Certainly not a big deal but a new issue because they are dual.

Similarly, I will sometimes try to clip in on the wrong side and have to flip. I am not a racer so those extra 5 second are not critical.

Another comment is that the clipin mechanism has loosened more on the side I usually unclip from at lights. They are adjustable so I'll fix that at some point but it does seem like one spring will wear before the other. I guess that is common if you usually unclip one side more than the other.

I still gave them 5 stars because they do what I wanted. The trade-off is inherent in a dual pedal.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  GREAT PEDALS!!!!!, September 23, 2011

Great pedals! I have these on three different bikes and they work well with clipless MTB/Urban style shoes. Easy to adjust tension and good float. These pedals are much nicer than all of the lesser priced imitations out there!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Shimano Clip/clipless pedals, May 5, 2012
By CycleGuy
I haven't had a chance to use these particular pedals, but using similar pedals is very satisfactory, however, I have to take issue with the fact that Amazon does not tell the buyer that these pedals COME WITH Shimano SH 56 SPD clips INCLUDED. Amazon doesnt publish this because they show you an ad to buy them as a combo, but DON'T. they multi release clips ARE INCLUDED...Shame on Amazon. I bought the multi release clips after thinking that the pedals came with the uni release clips...I will keep them as spares, but don't make the mistake of thinking these pedals come with the SH 55 clips..

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Versatile Pedals, May 1, 2012
By MKE Buyer (Milwaukee, WI)
These are perfect because I use clips to get into the city for my commute. Then when I shower at my club and change to my street clothes I can ride my bike the short distance to my office and use the non-clip side. Great invention.
