Product Description:

2008 album from the Dublin-born artist. fast becoming one of the finest vocalists currently emerging out of the UK roots music scene. Inspired by such Jazz greats as Billy Holiday, Dinah Washington, and the undisputed queen of Rockabilly, Wanda Jackson, Imelda is forging a contemporary sound all of her own. With a nod to the glory days of old but with her heart and soul very much in the present, this rockin' little minx belts them out with all the musical force of a veteran Rockabilly wildcat! 12 tracks.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Fantastic, September 2, 2009
By J. Rodgers
A great American roots music offering. Her voice accompanied by jaw dropping guitar solos and a fierce thumping bass made me get up and buy it after hearing it while in a local book store. From the cover you would be forgiven to think that this was just another Rockabilly album, but that is not the case. Whats included here is a mixture of Rock, Blues,R'n'B, Jazz, R'n'R, Rockabilly etc with many tracks being more a fusion of these styles then of just one particular musical genre. It is this that makes it fresh and original and not just another retro 50's album.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Superb, torchy rockabilly: REAL MUSIC!, September 26, 2009
By Jim (NYC NY United States)
If you go to hear Imelda May perform live, she's not doing to have dancers on stage, or a head mic, and there won't be any lip synching. This is a real singer with soul, attitude, and a great band behind her. Do yourself a favor and buy this record - this is what music used to be like, back when talent, not just looks, made the difference. "Love Tattoo" is a superb record, and Imelda May deserves to be heard.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Singer! Good Band. Weak Sound Quality, October 22, 2009
By R. Julian (Platteville WI)
I love this woman and I love this music! Imelda's singing will rip your heart out, and the band cooks. So buy this CD and give these young musicians a chance. BUT also consider that I finally gave up adjusting the bass and treble on the CD player in the car because I figured out that it was unfixable. I'm no audiophile by any means, but even to my ears the mix on this thing is just awful. Half the time the vocal is lost in the bass. Imelda, you really deserve a lot better presentation than this record company is giving you here. Frankly, the sound on the YouTube videos is way better.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A New Artist Who Should Have An Interesting Career, January 19, 2011
By Mark Anderson (Victoria, BC, Canada)
I first heard Imelda May when she recently appeared as a guest on a National Public Radio program. NPR played a few tracks from this album on air and I was sufficiently impressed that I ordered the CD from Amazon later that day.

The rest of this CD is as good as the tracks NPR played on air.

This is May's debut album. It's on the Verve label, which has a long history of releasing top jazz artists. May has the talent to take her into the same league as some of Verve's other female vocalists; she's definitely a new artist to watch.

May's music is a combination of 1950s jazz and rockabilly. Judging by the album photos and her comments on NPR, she's cultivating the 1950s image. The album photos show her sporting a very 50s hairstyle, a leopard spot top and tight fitting capri pants. All very 1950s.

Although she's too young to have been around in the 1950s, she manages to pull off the 1950s style and sound really well, while adding her own twist to them. This is a new artist who should have an interesting career.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Have to see Imelda & her band live!, March 6, 2010
By TF (Allentown, PA USA)
Headed into a Jamie Cullum show, I wondered who the opening act would be. The first time I heard Imeda May & her unbelievable talented band would be the same night. Everything about her and the band was a delight. She used the work rockabilly for some of the songs and blues for the others. The best comment I could make is that one work cannot describe their style or talent. I am a causual listener of rocabilly & blues but Imelda makes it something completely her own. They were just an amazing live band to watch. Oh yeah - the CD is great too (picked it up at the concert).

2.0 out of 5 stars.  MIXING SUCKS!!!!, April 7, 2011
By mindwalker (west TN)
Imelda May has a superb voice- I've heard her in several PBS music programs, so don't go by the excreable mixing of Love Tattoo. Too bad the production did her voice such a disservice by burying her in behind the instrumets. I admit that the talent of the band is superb, but the vocalist is supposed to be out front, right???

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Bop It, June 17, 2010
By Frenchy49 (Ny, NY)
I saw Imelda May and her excellent band on Later... with Jools Holland and was really taken with them. She's a knockout and they are a totally committed band from the Teddy Boy looking guitarist on down. Watching them play and listening to this album, I got the sense that they aren't just trying to pay homage to early rock 'n roll and rockabilly, they feel it, believe it and practice it with their hearts and souls.
Starting with "Johnny Got A Boom Boom" with it's kicking beat and reverb spilling over was a real treat and the same goes for "Big Bad Handsome Man." And then on to the dark magic of "Got your Voodoo Working," this is a fine, fun album. Sorry, I mean CD. What i'm saying is it's got that vinyl feel to it.
The only tune I wasn't crazy about was "Smokers Song." A little too frenetic and the chorus...
I was very pleasantly surprised by the slow tunes they do. Torchy without being saccharine and it seems like she just believes in each word and every note. It'll be interesting to see how she follow this.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  LOVE IT!!!, June 29, 2011
By JTD (Maine)
Wild about Imelda May's rockabilly/punk sound! This is an excellent album; I can't wait for Mayhem to make it to the states. Imelda May herself is fantastic, and her band is fun and obviously talented. I've started looking them up individually to see what else is out there with these artists.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A smile on my face and my toes get to tapping!, December 30, 2010
By John F. Freund (Springfield, VA United States)
Imelda May's voice is strong, powerful and smokey! Her music is upbeat, entertaining and has style. With a mixture of Jump Blues, Swing, Rockabilly and a touch of big band, Imaleda's music is right up my alley. The musicians in her band sound top-notch and the band is tight.

Imelda's smokey, sultry voice was a breath of fresh air the first time I heard 'Johnny's Got A Boom Boom'. I wish I could find a female vocalist with this strong a voice for my band! Imelda May seems to really enjoy the music she sings and the company she keeps on stage and in the studio.

Love Tattoo has a good smattering of styles, all with a touch of vintage to them. It's a good touch too. There are some slower songs which Imelda does great credit to and the higher tempo stuff that really gets me going every time they come around on the old iPod! It's a well produced album that everyone in my family enjoys!

I'm in my early 40's and when my oldest daughter looked at my wish list for gift ideas, her first response was, "Oh. I love Imelda May" The rest of my kids know who she is and love her music too/

My only regret was not discovering her earlier.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Simply fantastic, March 19, 2010
By MM (Indianapolis, Indiana United States)
I turned on the television just as Imelda was starting to sing How High the Moon with Jeff Beck at the Grammy's. I was immediately smitten, and after hearing this CD she's my all-time favorite female vocalist. Seriously. She's a great talent, has Elvis-like charisma, has worked like crazy for a dozen years or so, and is a tireless performer. Oh, and she writes a lot of her own material, too.

She's the freshest talent to hit the entertainment industry in a long time, and has earned everything she's achieved -- the hard way.

If you have a chance to see her live, don't blow it. She's worth any distance you have to travel to get there.

It's hard to imagine someone NOT liking this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  My New Favorite CD, March 5, 2010
By Gayle F (Colorado)
I first saw Imelda May performing with Jeff Beck at the Grammys doing "How High the Moon". I was blown away and couldn't get her out of my mind until I found her on YouTube. I immediatly bought her "Love Tattoo" CD. It was my non- stop for two solid days! I hadn't enjoyed a CD so much in years! She does new original material in Rockabilly style, very nice slow ballads, and some remakes of 60's classics. Leaving me wanting more, I found she had an earlier CD called "No Turning Back" I ordered it and to my surprise, it is as good as "Love Tattoo". Give her a listen, you won't be sorry. If you look for her on YouTube, listen to Big Bad Handsome Man, Johnny got a Boom Boom, Meet You at the Moon, and Falling in Love with You Again for a good sampling. And of course, if your on YoutTube, check out her Grammy performance with Jeff Beck, incredible!

This is a great set of original music- I heard her first on an NPR interview, and I've purchased and given away 5 disc's to my friends. A very seductive voice coupled with great backup. Cuts 2,3,5,8 and 12 are my favorites, but they're all strong and instantly identifiable.

Imelda May should be a world known artist. The vocals are warm and sultry. The words to the songs are imaginative and clever. Many of the melodies are danceable. Ms. May wrote most of the songs on this CD. The CD transcends "rockabilly". The instrumentation is excellent! Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I love "Love Tattoo", April 23, 2009
By havegraditude (USA)
This original CD was a sure hit with me. Love the sound of Imelda's voice and love her jazzy, sexy delivery. I have been to Ireland and could just imagine her singing in a little pub in Temple Bar district in Dublin. If you like jazz and that old rendition of songs performed with feeling and spice this girl is for you. Favorite song on the CD "Falling In Love Again" , but they all made me smile.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great, fun music - disappointing recording quality, February 10, 2012
By tim-bobby (Austin, TX United States)
I first listened to this with headphones on
My computer at work and really enjoyed it - I listened to it over and over. I couldn't wait to get home and listen to it on my home system (a zillion times better than my crummy computer), but listening to it home it seems very bright and harsh with zero dynamic range (what were the soft passages were cranked up to be as loud as the loud passages). I was disappointed in the recording quality. I agree with a previous poster that Imelda's music deserves a better recording than this. Putting that aside, the music itself is great! Some of it is kind of rockabilly, some jazz, some torch songs. I really can't categorize this music - it doesn't really for into any one, neat, tidy category (that's one reason I like it!). Imelda has a great, sultry voice and the whole CD is just a fantastic and fun mix of styles. I highly recommend it as long as you aren't too particular about the quality of the recording and can handle the excessive brightness and harshness. If nothing else, buy it and listen to it on whatever device makes it sound best - computer, phone, iPod, etc.

I give it 4 stars even though I found the recording quality somewhat dissapointing. I love this music!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  This band COOKS!, April 12, 2010
By LanceLink (Stamford, CT)
I saw these guys on Abbey Road and immediately went and bought their album. The band's tight, driving rockabilly rhythms, and May's smokey-sexy, subtly tremulous voice and aching, behind-the-beat phrasing are irresistable. If there was ever an album that could give a guy blue balls, this is it. I dare you to listen sitting down.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Thank goodness for Imelda & crew, July 12, 2011
By M. J. Amadio (Unincorporated United States)
I just wanted to say that I haven't been this excited about a singer for quite sometime now due to the over excessive vocal gymnastics that seems to run afoul in todays market as well as the overuse of that auto tune device and then theres the over abundance of vibrato that makes it painful when done to forcefully. Imelda May & her band, quite refreshing and I can't think of anytime in a very long time where a new artist has caught my attention to where each day I have at least one of her songs running through my head. Her band is tight, tough & takes no prisoners!

That slap bass ... oh man, thats all I can really say is, oh man! The guitar slinger, this dude shouldn't be allowed to roam the alleys at night, he swings a mean axe his command of the neck just chills me! The drummer has this beat that doesn't need an excess of hardware to make his point at all. There's this swagger that demands attention, commands it, then Imelda May comes in and now it's mass destruction, my heart has been stolen and my ears no longer obey me as they are now attuned to this new outfit.

The horns & piano are wonderful spices to add to this crock pot of slow cooked wonderment. Imelda & her boys don't need massive stacks of volume to destroy your ears to capture you at all, which is fine by me as I've always stood by ... it's the quieter moments that are the loudest. I look forward to the progress and longevity of many years of musical mayhem from Imelda May & crew.

By Xagan (Hallandale, Fl. United States)
Very good rockabilly noir ala the outstanding Devil Doll's "Queen of Pain" release from a few years ago. If you like this disc you must check out the Queen of Pain cd, which does this one better IMHO. That said this a great genre that is a lot of fun. The mixture of rockabilly and a jazz noir sound with a chanteuse singer who doesn't take it all too seriously is a great diversion in these tough times.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  A Rockbilly Gal Dun Good, March 31, 2009
By Paul A. Kirwan (Ireland)
It's great to hear that rockabilly is still alive and well..This is the debut album from Irish songstress Imelda May and I can say that the 'Gal Dun Good'. Each song is a throwback to the 50's, with not a filler in sight. You get the rockin' sound of the Gretsch guitar sitting over a Slappin' Double Bass, Brush sticks on the snare drum and irresistible piano tinklings making you just want to get up there and boogie. The first single and opening track 'Johnny's Got A Boom-Boom', sets the scene for a scorcher of an album. Subtlty comes in the form of 'Knock 123' and the divine 'Fallin' in Love Again'. A definite must buy. I stumbled across her on You Tube and boy was I glad that I did. If you like Brian Setzer or 50's/60's rock'n'roll, you will love this.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Enjoy! And an alternative in Max Raabe, July 17, 2011
By coolkayaker1 (Fox Valley, Illinois USA)
For those that enjoy the warm, sultry and retro voice of Imelda May, consider a tour over to Max Raabe and the Palast Orchester. The Live at Carnegie Hall (and live in New York, DVD--check u-tube for video clips, seriously, now while you're thinking of it--just open another tab on your browser and u-tube search Max Raabe) is stupendous, retro, and a wonderful companion to the sultry May. Both deserve a spot in your CD changer or iPod, and both Rabbe and May are true pioneers of their genre. Max Raabe played at the wedding reception of Marilyn Manson. God, he's good at what he does. So stark, so expressionless. The perfect coup-contracoup to Imelda May, who is more expressive than the tattooed fat lady at the traveling carnival. But, oh, so much more comely.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  What a talent!, February 24, 2011
By opinionated, yet truthful, mu.. (COOPER CITY, FL USA)
Imelda May is an incredible talent with a great range in her voice. She can go from sultry siren to growling rockabilly.

She is backed by a talented group of musicians specifically an acrobatic upright bass player and an aggressive, chicken-picking, hollow body guitar virtuoso.

The songs are all good with there being a wide variety of style yet always hovering over the genre of rockabilly. "Johnny got a boom, boom " is the highlight. It's a scorching rocker that starts out slow and rapidly picks up pace. May begins the song by gently singing the chorus but ends the song belting it out from her gut. This is a killer song! "Knock 123" is a classic, slow burning, Billie Holiday- type jazz tune where she expresses subtle emotion. "Falling in love with you again" belnds a gospel structure with stripped down, rockabilly instrumentation.

I love this type of music and would love to see great things to come from this Irish talent. Unfortunately, this type of music only attracts a limited audience and unless you are a fanatic about music (like your or me...why else would you be reading this review?) she is (probably) only going to be a fringe artist in the U.S. What a shame!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Rhythm & Blues; Rock, January 14, 2011
By bluesman (Knoxville, TN)
Imelda May & her band is so unique that it's difficult to put them into a catagory. Her big hit "Johnny Got A Boom Boom" is on here; however, the rest of the CD has a great blend of blues and rock with a few slow balads. The old standup bass is a staple with this band which gives it a great unique sound of old and new. It's a fresh sound unlike anything I've heard. In my opinion this is not "rock-a-billy" although she can do that style with fresh energy that redefines the catagory. If you liked the old Pat Benatar CD "True Love" from 1991 I think you'll like this. Imelda has done numerous covers from jazz, blues, rock, and country but everything on this CD is her original material. You should add this and her second CD "Mayhem" to your collection.

This CD is excellent. Imelda May's got a great sound. The music is catchy, and May is able to expand out to other styles, such as a very traditional waltz in Falling in Love With You Again, with tremendous success. This CD has become my new favorite.
