 Decent Intro to the Dentist, September 12, 2012

The main reason I am giving this book 4 stars is because my 2 1/2-year-old daughter likes it and the story doesn't revolve around the character having anxiety over a loose tooth or getting a filling. We checked out all of the books at the library about going to the dentist and this was one of the best I could find. (I also liked Going to the Dentist by Anne Civardi, if you skip the part where the older brother gets a filling). My daughter is afraid of dentists and it seems most of the books out there about visiting the dentist are aimed at older children and involve getting a filling or at least having a loose tooth. I think that reading to her about drilling or losing teeth before we go will only make her more afraid. I don't give this book 5 stars because there's not much of a story to it. The first 7, as well as 5 later illustrations, simply introduce the equipment at the dentist's office, which is useful, but not particularly engaging for kids. It does mention the drill, but I call it the electric toothbrush, and the girl in it does have a loose tooth, but the dentist doesn't pull it out.
I only wish I could find a good book aimed at a toddler's first visit to the dentist to help assuage fears.

What to expect at the Dentist, July 05, 2000

Simple wording and excellent pictures make this book an excellent choice to read to preschoolers. My Dentist by Harlow Rockwell shows exactly what a young child can expect on their first trip to a dentist. It shows all the tools that dentists use and how to care for teeth at home. I would recommend reading this book to children prior to their first dentist visit.
