the dedication to and love of medicine by nearly all, May 11, 2016
By Grace Tazewell

The increasingly impossible world of the non-specialist doctor is laid bare in this book, as well as some enterprising efforts by medical practices and hospitals to ease these pressure before more doctors throw in the towel...doctors desperately needed for the future. I heard Dr. Ofri speak at a local medical school, and then met with her in a group of 10....In this book she is honest about her mistakes in medicine, which every doctor has made, the fears doctors have, the dedication to and love of medicine by nearly all...a dedication and love that sometimes cannot survive the increasing and frustrating administrative demands heaped upon them by insurance companies and other regulatory mandates. A very good book that even made me become much more sympathetic to two doctors I encountered, one uneasy and fearful about a procedure (but wasn't honest about that), and the other hopelessly disconnected from the patient before him....I realized now what I was REALLY looking at: the fear of harming a patient that all doctors carry, and a doctor collapsing under the weight of too much work.

Ofri writes this excellent book about the emotions that many physicians feel that ..., March 22, 2016

Dr. Ofri writes this excellent book about the emotions that many physicians feel that affect how they practice medicine, and how the training and experiences have affected how they treat patients. Its a beautifully written book to remind us that physicians are just has human as their patients, and that its in that common humanity that beautiful relationships are developed between them. I am a physician and it was so healing for me to read about her experiences and emotions that she struggled with that I could complete connect with and know that I was not alone. In addition, it also has given me better insight into myself and how I treat patients. I have already recommended this book to my colleagues and to my non physician friends to help them better understand some of the struggles that physicians go through in their training and their career. I am thankful to her for having the courage to write this book and highly recommend it whether you are a physician or not a physician, since it will give you a new and clearer perspective on the relationships between physician and their patients.

Heathcare providers are HUMAN!, January 28, 2016

As and "old school" retired nurse, I really related to this book. I could plug in "nurse" almost everywhere "doctor" was listed. I appreciate the human focus of this book. We are all PEOPLE and despite our emotions we do the best we can each and every day. This book is very honest and easy to relate to. I appreciate the emphasis on the education process and the important role of mentors/preceptors. Nurses and doctors have been notorious for "eating our young". I appreciate the author's emphasis on turning this around and fostering the caring and compassion of all healthcare providers by being professional and CARING role models.
