Orthodontic treatment routinely is provided for adult patients, an age group with unique problems and concerns. Adults not only manifest a greatly diminished growth potential, but they also may have malocclusions that are significantly compromised by dental diseases and loss of teeth. This book first provides authoritative background information about our aging society and the aging process itself. Second, current information concerning the changes that take place in the adult craniofacial region is described. Third, treatment strategies for older orthodontic patients are presented, including the management of adult patients with compromised dentitions and temporomandibular disorders. Contributors include orthodontists, gerontologists and a physical anthropologist.
